And when she hearde the tydynges of the taking of the arcke of God, & that her father in law, & her husband were dead, she bowed her self & trauayled, for her paynes came vpon her. ²⁰ And about the time of her death, the wemen that stode about her, said vnto her: feare not, for thou hast borne a sonne. But she aunswered not nor regarded it ²¹ And she named the child Ichabod, saiyng: honoure is departed from Israel. O God, the Heathen are fallen into thyne heritage: the holy temple haue they defiled, and made Ierusalem an heape of stones. ² The deade bodye of thy seruauntes haue they geuen vnto the foules of the ayre to be deuoured, and the flesh of thy saintes vnto the beastes of the lande. ³ Their bloude haue they shed lyke water on euery syde of Ierusalem, and ther was no man to bury them. ⁴ We are become an open shame vnto oure enemyes, a verye scorne and derysyon vnto them that are rounde aboute vs. ⁵ Lorde, howe longe wylt thou be angrye? shall thy ielousy burne lyke fyre for euer? ⁶ Poure oute thyne indignacyon vpon the Heathen that knowe the not, and vpon the Kyngdomes that call not vpon thy name. ⁷ For they haue deuoured Iacob, and laied wast his dwellynge place. ⁸ O remembre not oure olde synnes, but haue mercye vpon vs, and that soone, for we are come to greate mysery.

¹ To the chaunter, vpon Sosanim, a Psalme of Asaph. Heare O thou shepeherde of Israel, thou that leadest Iacob lyke a flocke of shepe: shew thy self, thou that sittest vppon the Cherubyns.

¹⁰ The dayes of oure age are .iij. score yeares and ten: and though men be so strong that they come to foure score yeares, yet is their strength then but laboure, & sorowe: so soone passeth it awaye, and we are gone.

¹ The Lorde is kynge, be the people neuer so vnpaciente: he sytteth vpon the Cherubyns, be the earth neuer so vnquiete.

²⁰ Thus they turned their glorye into the similitude of a calfe, that eateth hay.

⁴⁰ Therfore was the wrath of the Lord kindled agaynst hys people, in so much that he abhorred his owne enheritaunce. ⁴¹ And gaue them ouer into the hand of the Heathen, and they that hated them, were lordes ouer them.

⁴ How shall we synge the Lordes songe in a straunge land? ⁵ If I forget the, O Ierusalem, let my right hande be forgotten. ⁶ If I do not remember the, lette my tonge cleue to the rofe of my mouth: yea, if I preferre not Ierusalem in my myrth.

¹¹ Why offre ye so manye sacrifyces vnto me? I am discontent for the brentofferinges of wethers and with the fatnesse of fedbeastes. I haue no pleasure in the bloude of bullockes, lambes & gootes. ¹² When ye appeare before me, who requyreth you to treade wythin my porches? ¹³ Offre me no mo oblacions, for it is but loste laboure. I abhorre youre incense. I maye not awaye with youre new moones, youre Sabbathes and solempne dayes. Youre fastinges are also in vayne. ¹⁴ I hate youre newe holye dayes and fastynges, euen from my very hert. They make me weerye, I can not abyde them. ¹⁵ Though ye holde oute your handes, yet turne I myne eyes from you. And though ye make manye prayers, yet heare I nothynge at all, for youre handes are full of bloude.

¹¹ But wo be to the vngodlye & vnryghtuous for they shall be rewarded after theyr worckes.

³ What wyll ye do in tyme of the visitacion and destruccyon, that shall come from farre? Tho whome wyll ye runne for helpe? or to whome will ye geue your honour that ye maye kepe it? ⁴ that ye come not among the presonners, or lye amonge the deade? After all this shall not the wrath of the Lord cease, but yet shall hys hande be stretched out styll. ⁵ Wo be also vnto Assur, whiche is a staffe of my wrathe, in whose hande is the roade of my punishement. ⁶ For I shall send him among those ypocrytish people, amonge the people that haue deserued my disfauour shall I send him: that he maye vtterly robbe them, spoyle them, and tread them doune lyke the myre in the strete.

² They shall take the people, and cary them home with them. And the house of Israell shall haue them in possession for seruauntes and maydens in the lande of the Lorde. They shall take those presonners, whose captyues they had bene afore, and rule those that had oppressed them.

¹ Therfore wo be vnto the (O robber) shalte not thou be robbed also? and vnto the that layeste wayte, as who say: there shuld no waite be layde for the: Wo vnto the whiche doest hurte, euen so shalte thou be hurte also. And as thou layest wayte, so shall waite be layde for the also.

¹ Thus sayeth the Lorde: Where is the byll of your mothers deuorcement, that I sente vnto her or who is the vsurer, to whome I solde you? Beholde, for youre owne offences are ye solde: & because of youre transgression, is youre mother forsaken.

³ Wherfore fast we (saye they) and thou seist it not? we put oure lyues to straytnesse, & thou regardest it not?

¹¹ whether the Gentiles them selues deale so fastly and vntruly with their goddes (whiche yet are no Goddes in dede.) But my people hath geuen ouer their hye honoure, for a thinge that maye not helpe them.

¹⁶ Moreouer, when ye be increased and multyplied in the land, then (sayeth the Lorde) there shall no more boost be made of the arcke of the Lordes Testament: No man shal thincke vpon it, neyther shall any man make mencion of it: for from thence forth it shall neyther be visited, nor honoured with gyftes.

⁴ Truste not in false lyenge wordes, sayenge: here is the temple of the Lorde, here is the temple of the Lorde, here is the temple of the Lorde.

⁸ But take hede, yea trust in councels, that begyle you & do you no good. ⁹ For when ye haue stolen, murthered, committed aduoutrye, and periury: When ye haue offred vnto Baal, folowyng straunge & vnknowne Goddes. ¹⁰ Then come ye, and stande before me in thys house, whiche hath my name geuen vnto it and say: Tush, we are absolued quite, though we haue done all these abhominacions. ¹¹ What? thincke you thys house that beareth my name, is a denne of theues? And these thinges are not done priuelye, but before myne eyes sayeth the Lorde. ¹² Go to my place in Silah, wherevnto I gaue my name afore tyme, & loke wel what I did to the same place for the wyckednes of my people of Israell. ¹³ And now, thoughe ye haue done all these dedes (sayth the Lorde) & I my selfe rose vp euer by tymes to warne you & to comen wyth you yet wolde ye not heare me: I called, ye wolde not aunswere. ¹⁴ And therfore euen as I haue done vnto Siloh, so wil I do to thys house, that my name is geuen vnto (and that ye put your trust in) ye vnto the place that I haue geuen to you & youre fathers. ¹⁵ And I shal thrust you of my syght, as I haue cast out all youre brethren the whole sede of Ephraim.

¹⁵ Samech. All they that go by the, clappe their handes at the: hissynge and waggynge their heades vpon the daughter Ierusalem, and saye: is this the cytie that man call so fayre, wherin the whole lande reioyseth? ¹⁶ Ain. All thyne enemyes gape vpon the, whisperynge and bytynge their teth, sayinge: let vs deuoure, for the tyme that we loked for, is come: we haue founde and sene it. ¹⁷ Phe The Lord hath fullfylled the thynge, that he was purposed to do: and perfourmed that he had dewysed longe a go: he hath destroyed and not spared. He hath caused thyne aduersary to triumphe ouer the, & set vp the horne of thyne enemye. ¹⁸ Zade. Let thyne hert crye vnto the Lorde, O thou cytie of the daughter Sion: let thy teares runne downe lyke a ryuer daye & night: rest not, & let not the aple of thine eye leaue of. ¹⁹ Koph. Stande vp and make thy prayer in the first watch of the nyght, poure oute thyne herte lyke water before the Lord: lyft vp thyne handes, for the lyues of thy yonge chyldren, that dye of honger in the stretes.

⁴⁰ Nun. Let vs loke well vpon oure owne wayes, and remembre oure selues, and turne agayne to the Lorde.

¹² And though they bring vp any yet wyll I make them chyldelesse among men. Yea, wo shall come to them, when I departe from them.

²¹ I hate and abhorre youre holye dayes, & where as ye cense me when ye come together I wyll not accepte it: ²² And though ye offre me brentofferynges, and meateofferynges, yet haue I no pleasure therein. As for youre fat thanckeofferinges, I wil not loke vpon them.

³ Ye are taken out for the euyll daye, euen ye that syt in the stole of wilfulnesse:

¹¹ If I were a fleshlye felowe, & a preacher of lyes, & tolde them that they myght syt bebbynge & bollyng, and be droncken: O that were a Prophete for this people.

⁹ And now make your prayer before God, that he may haue mercy vpon vs: for suche thinges haue ye done. Shal he regarde your personnes, thyncke ye, sayeth the Lorde of hostes?

⁹ And se that ye once thinke not to saye in your selues, we haue Abraham to our father. For I say vnto you, that God is able of these stones rayse vp children vnto Abraham. ¹⁰ Euen now is the axe put vnto the rote of the trees: so that euerye tre which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewen doun & cast into the fire.

²⁵ Wo be to you Scribes and Pharises hypocrites, which make cleane the vtter side of the cuppe, & of the platter: but within they are ful of bribery and excesse. ²⁶ Thou blynd Pharisei, clense first the ynneside of the cup & platter, that the outside of them may be clene also. ²⁷ Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrytes, for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes, whiche appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead bones and of all filthines. ²⁸ So are ye, for outwarde ye apeare righteouse vnto men, when within, ye are full of hypocresie and iniquitie.

¹⁷ And his dyscyples remembred how that it was written: the zele of thyne house hath euen eaten me.

²¹ A woman when she trauayleth, hathe sorowe, because her houre is come: but assone as she is deliuered of the child she remembreth no more the anguish, for ioye that a man is borne into the worlde.

¹⁵ And the euyl spirite answered and said: Iesus I know and Paull I know: but who are ye? ¹⁶ And that man in whom the euyll spyryte was ranne on them and ouercame them, and preuayled agaynste them, so that they fledde out of that house naked and wounded.

²⁸ For he is not a Iewe, whiche is a Iewe outwarde. Neyther is that thynge circumcysyon, whiche is outewarde in the fleshe: ²⁹ but he is a Iewe, which is hyd within, and the circumcisyon of the herte is the true circumcisyon, whiche is in the spirite & not in the letter, whose prayse is not of men, but of God.

¹ Brethren I would not that ye should be ignoraunte of this, howe that oure fathers were all vnder a cloude, and al passed thorowe the sea, ² and were all baptysed vnder Moyses, in the cloude, and in the sea: ³ and dyd al eate of one spyrytual meate, ⁴ and dyd al drincke of one maner of spyrytual drincke. And they drancke of that spyrytuall rocke that folowed them, which rocke was Christe. ⁵ But in manie of them had God no delite. For they were ouerthrowen in the wyldernes.

³⁰ For this cause manye are weake and sycke amonge you, and manye slepe. ³¹ Yf we had truely iudged our selues, we should not haue ben iudged. ³² But when we are iudged of the Lorde, we are chastened, because we shoulde not be dampued wyth the worlde.

¹³ Watche ye, stande faste in the fayth, quyte you lyke men and be stronge,

¹⁰ Finally my brethren, be stronge in the Lord and in the power of his myghte. ¹¹ Put on the armoure of God, that ye maye stande stedfaste agaynste the crafty assautes of the deuyll.

⁵ hauynge a simylytude of Godly lyuynge, but haue denyed the power thereof: and suche abhorre.

⁴ whiche had the golden senser, and the arcke of the testament ouerlayde roundabout wyth gold, wherein was the golden pot with manna, and Aarons rodde that sprong, and the tables of the testament.

²¹ which signifyeth baptisme that nowe saueth vs, not the puttinge awaye of the fylth of the fleshe, but in that a good conscience consenteth to God, by the resurreccion of Iesus Christe,

¹⁷ For the time is come that iudgemente must beginne at the house of God. Yf it fyrst begynne at vs, what shal the ende be of them, whiche beleue not the Gospel of God? ¹⁸ And yf the rightuous scasly be saued, where shal the vngodly and the sinner appere?

⁵ My mynd is therfore to put you in remembraunce, for as muche as ye ones knowe this, how that the Lord (after that he had deliuered the people out of Egypt) destroyed them which afterwarde beleued not.
