¹ In the fyrst yeare of Darius the sonne of Ahasuerus, whyche was the sede of the Medes, & was made king ouer the realm of the Caldees: ² yea euen in the fyrst yeare of his raygne, I Daniel desyred to knowe the yearly nombre oute of the bokes, whereof the Lorde spake vnto Ieremye the Prophete: that Ierusalem shoulde lye waste .lxx. yeares: ³ and I turned me vnto god the Lorde, for to praye and make myne intercession, with fastinge, sackcloth & ashes, ⁴ I prayed before the Lorde my God, and knowledged, sayinge: O Lorde, thou greate and fearfull God, thou that kepest couenaunt and mercye wyth them, whiche loue the, and do thy commaundementes. ⁵ We haue synned, we haue offended, we haue ben disobedient and gone back: yea we haue departed from all thy preceptes and iudgementes. ⁶ We woulde neuer folowe thy seruauntes the Prophetes, that spake in thy name to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers, and to all the people of the lande. ⁷ O Lorde, ryghteousnesse belongeth vnto the, vnto vs pertayneth nothynge but open shame, as it is come to passe this day vnto euery man of Iuda and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Yea, vnto all Israell, whether they be farre or nye thorow out all landes: wherin thou haste strowed them, because of the offences that they had done agaynst the. ⁸ Yea O Lorde, vnto vs, to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers: euen to vs all, that haue offended the, belongeth open shame. ⁹ But vnto the, O Lorde oure God, pertayneth mercye and forgeuenesse. As for vs, we are gone backe from him, ¹⁰ and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lorde oure God, to walke in his lawes, which he layed before vs by his seruauntes the prophetes: ¹¹ yea all Israel haue transgressed, & gone back from thy law, so that they haue not herckened vnto thy voyce. Wherfore the cursse & othe, that is written in the lawe of Moses the seruaunte of God (agaynst whom we haue offended) is poured vpon vs. ¹² And he hath perfourmed his wordes, whiche he spake against vs, and against oure iudges that iudged vs: to brynge vpon vs suche a greate plage, as neuer was vnder heauen, lyke as it is now come to passe in Ierusalem. ¹³ Yea all this plage, as it is wrytten in the lawe of Moses, is come vpon vs. Yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turne agayne from our wickednesse, and to be learned in thy verite. ¹⁴ Therefore hathe the Lorde made haste, to brynge this plage vpon vs, for the Lorde our God is ryghteous, in all his worckes which he doeth: for why, we woulde not herken vnto his voyce. ¹⁵ And now, O Lorde oure God, thou that with a myghty hande haste brought thy people oute of Egipte, to get thy selfe a name, whiche remayneth this day: we haue synned ¹⁶ O Lorde, and done wyckedly agaynste all thy ryghteousnes: yet let thy wrothfull displeasure be turned awaye (I beseche the) from thy cytye Ierusalem thy holy hill. And why? for oure synnes sake, and for the wickednesse of oure forefathers is Ierusalem and thy people abhorred, of all them that are aboute vs. ¹⁷ Now therefore, O oure God, heare the prayer of thy seruaunte, and his intercession. O let not thy face shyne ouer thy Sanctuary that lyeth waste. ¹⁸ O my God, enclyne thine eare, and herken (at the leaste for thine owne sake) open thyne eyes: beholde, how we be desolated, yea and the cytye also, whiche is called after thy name: for we do not cast oure prayers before the in oure owne righteousnesse, no: but onely in thy greate mercyes. ¹⁹ O Lorde, heare. O forgeue Lorde. O Lorde consydre, tarye not ouer longe: but for thyne owne sake do it. O my God: for the citie and thy people is called after thy name. ²⁰ As I was yet speakinge at my prayers, knoweledginge myne owne sinnes, and the synnes of my people, makinge so mine intercession before the Lorde my God, for the holye hils sake of my God: ²¹ yea, whyle I was yet speakinge in my prayer, beholde the man Gabrel (whome I had sene afore in the vision) came flying to me, and touched me about the offeringe time in the eueninge. ²² He infourmed me, and spake vnto me: O Daniel sayde he, I am now come to make the vnderstande it: ²³ For as sone as thou begannest to make thy prayer, it was so diuised, and therfore am I come to shewe the. And why? For thou arte a man greatly beloued. Wherfore, pondre the matter well, that thou mayest learne, to vnderstande the vision. ²⁴ .Lxx. weakes are determed ouer thy people, and ouer the holy citie: that the wickednesse maye be consumed, that the sinne maye haue an ende, that the offence may be reconcyled, and to bringe in euerlastinge righteousnesse, to fulfill the visions and the Prophetes, and to annoynte the most holy one. ²⁵ Vnderstande this then, and marcke it well, that from the tyme it shalbe concluded, to go and repayre Ierusalem againe, vnto Christ (or the annointed) prince: there shalbe seuen weakes. Then shal the stretes and walles be buylded again .lxij. weakes, but wyth harde troublous time. ²⁶ After these .lxii. weakes shall Christ be slaine and they shall haue no pleasure in hym. Then shall there come a people with the Prince, and destroye the cytie and the Sanctuarye: & his ende shall come as the water floude. But the desolacion shall continue till the ende of the battell. ²⁷ He shall make a stronge bonde with many, for the space of a weke: and when the weke is halfe gone, he shall put doune the slayne and meateofferinge. And in the temple there shalbe an abhominable desolacion, till it haue destroyed all. And it is concluded, that thys wasting shall continue vnto the ende.

²¹ And Daniel abode styl, vnto the fyrste yeare of kynge Cyrus.

³¹ and Darius out of Medea toke in the kyngedome, beyng .lxij. yeare of age.

²⁸ This Daniell prospered in the raigne of Darius and Cirus of Persia.

¹ And in the first yeare of Darius of Medea, I stode by him, to comforte him, & to strength him,

²¹ to fullfyll the worde of the Lorde by the mouthe of Ieremiah, vntyll the lande had her pleasure of her Sabothes: for as longe as she laye desolate, she kepte Saboth vntyll she had fullfylled .lxx. yeres.

¹ In the fyrste yeare of Cyrus king of Persia (that the word of the lord spoken by the mouth of Ieremy mighte be fulfylled) the Lord stered vp the sprete of Cyrus kynge of Persia, that he caused it be proclamed thorowout al his empyre, ye and by wrytinge also, saying:

³ Treade vpon them with thy fete, and cast them doune to the grounde, for the enemye hath destroyed altogether in the Sanctuary. ⁴ Thyne aduersaries roare in thy houses, & set vp their banners for tokens. ⁵ Men may se the axes glyster aboue, lyke as those that hewe in the wood. ⁶ They cut doune all the syelyng worke of the Sanctuary with bylles and axes. ⁷ They haue set fyre vpon the Sanctuary, they haue defyled the dwellyng place of thy name, euen vnto the grounde.

¹ A Psalme of Asaph. O God, the Heathen are fallen into thyne heritage: the holy temple haue they defiled, and made Ierusalem an heape of stones. ² The deade bodye of thy seruauntes haue they geuen vnto the foules of the ayre to be deuoured, and the flesh of thy saintes vnto the beastes of the lande.

²⁴ In thy testomonyes is my delite, they are my councelers.

⁹⁹ I haue more vnderstandyng then all my teachers, for thy testimonies are my studye. ¹⁰⁰ Yea, I am wyser then the aged, for I kepe thy commaundementes.

¹¹ Then spake I: Lorde, howe longe? he aunswered: vntyll the cytyes be vtterlye without inhabytours, and the houses wythoute men, tyll the lande be also desolate, & lye vnbuylded. ¹² For the Lorde shall take the men farre awaye, so that the lande shall lye waste.

¹⁰ the wicked cytyes shalbe broken donne, al houses shalbe shut, that no man maye come in. ¹¹ In the stretes shall there be lyft vp a crye because of wine, al mens chere shall vanyshe awaye & al ioye of the earth shal passe. ¹² Desolacion shal remayne in the cytyes, and the gates shalbe smytten wyth wastnesse.

¹⁰ The cytyes of thy Sanctuary lye waste, Sion is a wildernesse, and Ierusalem a deserte.

³⁴ And as for the voyce of myrth and gladnesse of the cytyes of Iuda, and Ierusalem the voyce of the brydegrome & of the bryde: I wil make them ceasse, for the lande shall be desolate.

¹¹ and this whole lande shall become a wyldernes, & they shall serue the sayde people & the kynge of Babylon, thre score yeares and ten. ¹² When the .lxx. yeares eare expyred, I wyll vyset also the wickednesse of the kynge of Babylon & hys people sayeth the Lorde: ye and the land of the Caldees, and wyll make it a perpetuall wyldernes,

¹⁸ But fyrst the cytie of Ierusalem, and all the cytyes of Iuda, theyr kinges and princes to make them desolate, waste, despised & cursed according as it is come to passe this day.

⁶ then wyll I do to this house, as I dyd vnto Siloh, and wil make this cytie to be abhorred of all the people of the earth.

¹⁸ Micheah the Morasthite, which was a Prophet vnder Ezekiah kynge of Iuda, spake to all the people of Iuda: Thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: Syon shalbe plowed lyke a felde, Ierusalem shalbe an heape of stones, and the hyll of the Lordes house shalbe turned to an hye wood.

⁷ And all people shall serue hym, and hys sonne, and hys chyldes chyldren, vntyll the tyme of the same lande become also: yea many people & greate Kynges shall serue hym.

¹⁰ But thus sayeth the Lorde: When ye haue fulfylled .lxx. yeares at Babylon, I wil bring you home, & of myne owne goodnes I wyll carye you hyther agayne vnto this place.

¹ Aleph. Alas, how sytteth the citie so desolate, that some tyme was full of people? How is she become lyke a wedowe, whiche was the ladye of all nacyons? How is she brought vnder trybute, that ruled all landes.

¹⁵ Now when I Daniel had sene this vision, and sought for the vnderstandinge of it: beholde, there stode before me a thynge like vnto a man, ¹⁶ and I hearde a mans voyce in the ryuer of Vlai, which cryed and sayd: O Gabriel, make this man vnderstande the vysion.

¹² Therfore shall Syon (for youre sakes) be plowed lyke a felde: Ierusalem shalbe come an heape of stones, and the hyll of the temple shalbe turned to an hye wodde.

⁵ Speake vnto all the people of the land, & to the priestes, and saye: when ye fasted and mourneth in the .v. & .vij. moneth (now this .lxx. yeares) dyd ye fast vnto me?

¹⁵ When ye therfore shall se the abhomination that betokeneth desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophete, stande in the holye place (let hym that readeth it, vnderstande it)

¹⁴ Moreouer, when ye se the abhomynacyon that betokeneth desolacion, whereof is spoken by Daniel the Prophet, stande where it oughte not, let hym that readeth vnderstand, then let them that be in Iurye, fle to the mountaynes.

³⁴ The chamberlayne aunswered Phylippe, and sayed: I pray the of whom speaketh the Prophete this? of him selfe, or of some other man?

¹³ Tyll I come, geue attendaunce to reading to exhortacyon and to doctryne.

¹⁵ and for as muche also as thou haste knowen holy scrypture of a chyld, whiche is able to make the wyse vnto saluacion thorowe the fayth which is in Christ Iesu. ¹⁶ For al scripture geuen by inspyracion of God, is profytable to teache, to improue, to amende and to instruct in ryghtuousnes, ¹⁷ that the man of God maye be perfecte and prepared vnto all good workes.

¹⁰ Of whiche saluacyon haue the Prophetes enquyred and searched, whiche prophesyed of the grace that shoulde come vnto you, ¹¹ searchynge when or at what tyme of the spyryte of Christe whiche was in them, shoulde signifye, whiche spyryte testyfyed before, the passyons that shoulde come vnto Christe, and the glorye that shoulde folowe after: ¹² vnto which Prophetes it was declared, that not vnto them selues, but vnto vs, they shoulde mynyster the thynges whiche are nowe shewed vnto you of them whiche by the holye ghoste sent doune from heauen, haue preached vnto you the thynges whiche the aungels desyre to beholde.

¹⁹ We haue also a ryght sure worde of prophesye, whervnto yf ye take hede, as vnto a light, that shineth in a darcke place, ye do wel vntyll the daye dawne, and the daye starre aryse in youre hertes. ²⁰ So that ye fyrste knowe this, that no prophesye in the scripture hath any priuate interpretacion. ²¹ For the scrypture came neuer by the wyl of man, but holye men of God spake as they were moued by the holy ghoste.

³ Happye is he that readeth, and they that heare the wordes of the prophecye, and kepe those thynges which are wrytten therein. For the tyme is at hande.

²¹ And euen there at the water besyde Ahaua, caused I a fastynge to be proclamed, that we myghte humble oure selues before oure God, to seke of him a ryght waye for vs, and oure chyldren and all oure substaunce.

⁵ And aboute the euenynge sacryfyce I rose vp from my heauynes, & rente my clothes & my rayment, and fel vpon my knees, and spred out my handes vnto the Lorde my God,

⁶ And Esdras stode vp before the house of God, and wente into the chamber of Iohanan the sonne of Elialib. And when he came thyther, he ate no bread, nor drancke water: for he mourned because of the transgressyon of them that had bene in captiuite.

⁴ When I hearde these wordes, I sat me doune and wepte, and mourned two dayes, & fasted and prayed before the God of heauen ⁵ & sayde: O Lorde God of heauen, thou greate & terryble God, thou that kepest couenaunt and mercy for them that loue the, and obserue thy commaundementes: ⁶ let thyne eares herken & thyne eyes be open, that thou mayeste heare the prayer of thy seruaunte, whiche I praye nowe before the daye and nyghte for the chyldren of Israel thy seruauntes, and knowledge the synnes of the chyldren of Israel, which we haue commytted agaynst the. And I and my fathers house haue synned also. ⁷ We haue bene corrupt vnto the, in that we haue not kepte the commaundementes, statutes and lawes, which thou commaundedst thy seruaunt Moyses. ⁸ Yet call to remembraunce the word that thou commaundest thy seruaunt Moses, and saydeste: Yf ye transgresse, then wyll I scater you abroade among the nacyons. ⁹ But yf ye turne vnto me, and kepe my commaundementes and do them: though ye were caste oute vnto the vttermost parte of heauen yet wyll I gather you from thence, and wyll brynge you from thence, euen vnto the place, that I haue chosen for my name to dwel ther ¹⁰ They are thy seruauntes, & thy people whom thou haste delyuered thorowe thy greate power and myghtye hande. ¹¹ O Lorde, let thyne eares herken to the prayer of thy seruaunte, & the prayer of thy seruauntes, whose desyre is to feare thy name, and let thy seruaunte prospere thys daye, and graunte hym mercye in the syght of thys man: for I was the kynges buttelar.

¹ In the foure & twentye daye of thys moneth came the children of Israell together wyth fastynge sack clothes, and earthe vpon them,

¹ When Mardocheus perceiued al that was done, he rente his clothes, and put on sacke clothe, & asshes, and went out into the middes of the citie & cried loud and lamentably, ² and came before the kinges gate: for there myghte no man entre wythyn the kynges gate, that hath sacke clothe on. ³ And in all landes and places, as farre as the kynges worde and commaundement extended there was greate lamentacyon among the Iewes, and many fasted, wepte, mourned, & laye in sacke clothes & in ashes.

¹⁶ Go thou thy waye then, and gather together all the Iewes that are founde at Susan, and fast ye for me, that ye eat not & drinke not in thre dayes, nether day nor nyght. I & my Damosels wil fast lykewise, and so wil I go into the kynge contrary to the commaundement: yf I perish I peryshe.

¹³ Neuerthelesse, when they were sycke, I put on a sacke cloth: I humbled my soule with fastyng, and my prayer turned into myne owne bosome.

¹⁰ I wepte and chastened my selfe with fastyng, and that was turned to my reprofe. ¹¹ I put on a sacke cloth, and therefore they iested vpon me.

¹³ Aryse therfore & haue mercy vpon Sion, for it is time to haue mercy vpon her, yea, the tyme is come. ¹⁴ And why? thy seruauntes haue a loue too her stones, and it pitieth them to se her in the dust. ¹⁵ The Heathen shal feare thy name, O Lord, and all the kynges of the earth thy maiesty. ¹⁶ For the Lorde shall buylde vp Sion, and shall apeare in hys glory. ¹⁷ He turneth him vnto the prayer of the poore destitute, & despiseth not their desyre.

¹² And at the same tyme shall the Lorde of Hostes call men to wepinge, mourninge, to baldnesse & puttynge on of sacke clothe.

¹⁰ But thus sayeth the Lorde: When ye haue fulfylled .lxx. yeares at Babylon, I wil bring you home, & of myne owne goodnes I wyll carye you hyther agayne vnto this place. ¹¹ For I knowe what I haue deuysed for you sayeth the Lorde. My thoughtes are to geue you peace, and not trouble (whiche I geue you all redye) & that ye might haue hope agayn. ¹² Ye shal crye vnto me, ye shall go & call vpon me, & I shall heare you. ¹³ Ye shall seke me & fynde me, Yea, yf so be that ye seke me with your whole herte,

³ thou hast cryed vnto me, and I haue hearde the: I haue shewed greate and hye thinges, whiche were vnknowen vnto you.

³⁷ Thus sayeth the Lorde God: I wyll yet ones be found agayne of the house of Israel & do this for them: I shall increase them as a flocke of men.

¹⁰ Now when Daniel vnderstode that the writtinge was made, he wente into hys house: and the windowes of hys hall toward Ierusalem stode open. There kneled he doune vpon his knees, thre tymes a daye: there he made his peticion, and praysed his God, like as hys maner was to do afore tyme.

² At the same time I Daniel mourned for the space of thre weakes, ³ so that I had no lust to eate bread: as for fleshe and wine there came none within my mouth: No, I dyd not ones annoynte my selfe, till the whole thre weakes were oute.

¹³ Gyrde you, & make youre mone, O ye prestes: mourne ye mynysters of the aulter: go youre way in, and slepe in sackcloth, O ye offycers of my God: for the meate and drinckofferynge shall be taken awaye from the house of youre God.

¹² Now therfore sayeth the Lorde: Turne you vnto me wyth all youre hertes, wyth fastynge, wepynge and mournynge,

⁶ And the tydinges came vnto the kynge of Niniue, whyche arose out of hys seate, and dyd hys apparell of, and put on sack cloth, & sate hym downe in asshes. ⁷ And it was cryed and commaunded in Niniue, by the auctorite of the king and hys lordes, sayenge: se that nether man or beast, oxe or shepe taste ought at all: and that they nether fede ner drinke water: ⁸ but put on sack cloth both man and beast, and crye myghtely vnto God: yee se that euery man turne from hys euell waye, and from the wyckednesse, that he hath in hande. ⁹ Who can tell? God maye turne, & repente & cease from his fearce wrath, that we perish not.

³⁷ And she had bene a weddowe aboute .iiij. score and .iiij. yeares, which went neuer out of the temple, but serued God with fastinge and prayer night & daye.

³⁰ And Cornelius sayde: Thys daye nowe .iiij. dayes I fasted and at the nynthe houre I prayde in my house: and beholde, a man stode before me in brighte clothinge,

⁸ Drawe nye to God, and he wyll drawe nye to you. Clense youre handes ye synners, and purge youre hertes ye wauerynge mynded. ⁹ Suffer afflictyons: sorowe ye and wepe. Let youre laughter be turned to mornynge and youre ioye to heauynes. ¹⁰ Cast doune your selues before the Lorde, and he shal lyfte you vp.

¹⁶ Knoweledge youre fautes one to another; and praye one for another, that ye maye be healed. The prayer of a ryghtuous man auayleth muche yf it be feruente. ¹⁷ Helias was a man mortall, euen as we are, and he prayed in hys prayer, that it might not rayne: and it rayned not on the earth by the space of thre yeares & sixe monethes. ¹⁸ And he prayed againe, and the heauen gaue rayne, and the earthe broughte forth her frute.

⁶ and yet shew mercy vnto thousandes among them that loue me and kepe my commaundementes.

⁶ And when the Lord walked before him, he cried: Lord Lord God full of compassion and mercy, which are not lightly angry but abundaunt in mercy and truth, ⁷ and kepest mercye in store for thousandes, & forgeueste wyckednes, trespace, and synne (for there is no man innocent before the) and vysitest the wyckednes of the father vpon the chyldren and vpon chyldrens chyldren, euen vnto the thyrd and fourth generation.

⁴⁰ And they shall confesse theyr misdeades and the mysdeades of theyr fathers in theyr trespaces, which they haue trespaced agaynst me, & for that also that they haue walked contrary to me. ⁴¹ Therfore I also wyl walke contrarye vnto them, and wyl brynge theym into the lande of theyr enemies. And then at the least waye theyr vncircumcised hertes shalbe tamed, & then they shall make an atonement for theyr mysdeades. ⁴² And I wyl remembre my bond with Iacob, and my testament wyth Isaac, and my testament wyth Abraham, and wyll thynke on the lande.

¹⁸ the Lord is longe year he be angrye, and ful of mercy, and suffereth synne and trespace, and leaueth no man innocent, and vysyteth the vnrighteousnesse of the fathers vpon the chyldren, euen vpon the thyrd and fourth generacion, ¹⁹ be mercyfull I beseche the therfore vnto the synne of thys people according vnto thy greate mercy, and accordyng as thou hast forgeuen thys people from Egypt euen vnto thys place.

¹⁰ and shewe mercye vpon thousandes amonge them that loue me and kepe my commaundementes.

⁹ Vnderstande therefore, that the Lord thy God he is god & that a true god, which kepeth pointment and mercy vnto them that loue him and kepe hys commaundementes, euen thorowe oute a thousande generations

²¹ Se thou feare them not for the Lord thy God is among you a mighty God and a terrible.

²³ & sayde: Lorde God of Israel, there is no God lyke the in heauen aboue or in the earthe benethe, that kepest appoyntment & mercye wyth thy seruauntes that walcke before the wyth all theyr hertes:

⁴⁷ yet yf they turne agayne vnto their hertes in the lande where they be in captiuite, and returne and praye vnto the in the lande of them that holde them captiue, sayinge: we haue synned & haue done wyckedlye & haue trespaced, ⁴⁸ & so turne agayne vnto the with all their hertes and all their soules in the land of their enemyes which holde them captyue, and praye vnto the, towarde the land which thou gauest vnto their fathers, & towarde the cytie which thou hast chosen, and house which I haue buylt for thy name: ⁴⁹ then heare thou their prayer & supplicacion vp to heauen thy dwellyng place, & iudge their causes,

¹⁴ yet yf my people that are named after my name, shall humble themselues & make intercessyon & seke my presence, & turne from their wicked wayes, then wyll I heare from heauen and be mercyfull to theyr synnes, & wyl heale theyr lande.

⁵ & sayde: O Lorde God of heauen, thou greate & terryble God, thou that kepest couenaunt and mercy for them that loue the, and obserue thy commaundementes:

² & separated the sede of Israell from all the straunge chyldren, and stode & knowleged theyr synnes, and the wyckednesses of theyr fathers ³ & stode vp in theyr place, & red in the boke of the lawe of the Lord theyr God foure tymes on the day, and they knowleged & worshypped the Lorde theyr God foure tymes on the daye.

³² Nowe oure God, thou great God, mightye and terryble, that thou kepest couenaunte and mercy, regarde not a lytle of the trauaile that hath happened vnto vs, and our kynges prynces, priestes, prophetes, fathers and all thy people, sence the tyme of the kynges of Assur vnto thys daye.

⁵ Therfore I confessed my sinne vnto the & hyd not myne vnryghtuousnes. I sayde: I wyll knowledge myne offence and accuse my selfe vnto the Lord, & so thou forgauest me the wickednesse of my synne Selah.

¹³ but on this condicion, that thou knowe thy greate blasphemy: Namely, that thou haste vnfaithful forsaken the Lorde thy God, and hast made thy selfe partaker of straung goddes vnder all grene trees, but hast had no wil to heare my voyce, sayeth the Lorde.

¹⁷ O Lorde God, it is thou that hast made heauen and earthe wyth thy greate power, and hye arme, and there is nothinge to harde for the. ¹⁸ Thou shewest mercy vpon thousandes, thou recompencest the wickednes of the fathers, into the bosume of the children, that come after them. ¹⁹ Thou art the greate and myghtie God, whose name is the Lorde of Hostes, greate in counsel, and infinite in thought. Thine eyes loke vpon all the wayes of mens chyldren, to rewarde euery one after his waye, and according to the frutes of his inuencyons.

⁵ We haue synned, we haue offended, we haue ben disobedient and gone back: yea we haue departed from all thy preceptes and iudgementes. ⁶ We woulde neuer folowe thy seruauntes the Prophetes, that spake in thy name to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers, and to all the people of the lande. ⁷ O Lorde, ryghteousnesse belongeth vnto the, vnto vs pertayneth nothynge but open shame, as it is come to passe this day vnto euery man of Iuda and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Yea, vnto all Israell, whether they be farre or nye thorow out all landes: wherin thou haste strowed them, because of the offences that they had done agaynst the. ⁸ Yea O Lorde, vnto vs, to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers: euen to vs all, that haue offended the, belongeth open shame. ⁹ But vnto the, O Lorde oure God, pertayneth mercye and forgeuenesse. As for vs, we are gone backe from him, ¹⁰ and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lorde oure God, to walke in his lawes, which he layed before vs by his seruauntes the prophetes: ¹¹ yea all Israel haue transgressed, & gone back from thy law, so that they haue not herckened vnto thy voyce. Wherfore the cursse & othe, that is written in the lawe of Moses the seruaunte of God (agaynst whom we haue offended) is poured vpon vs. ¹² And he hath perfourmed his wordes, whiche he spake against vs, and against oure iudges that iudged vs: to brynge vpon vs suche a greate plage, as neuer was vnder heauen, lyke as it is now come to passe in Ierusalem.

¹⁸ Where is there such a God as thou? that pardonest wickednes, and forgeuest the offences of the remnaunte of thyne herytage? He kepeth not hys wrath for euer. And why? his delyte is to haue compassyon: ¹⁹ he shal turne agayne, and be mercyfull to vs: he shall put doune oure wyckednesses, and caste all oure synnes into the botome of the sea. ²⁰ Thou shalt kepe thy truste wyth Iacob, and thy mercye for Abraham, lyke as thou haste sworne vnto oure fathers longe agoo.

² The Lorde is a gelous God, & a taker of vengeaunce: yee a taker of vengeaunce is the Lorde, and wrathfull. The Lord taketh vengeaunce of hys enemyes, and reserueth dyspleasure for his aduersaries. ³ The Lorde suffreth longe, he is of greate power, & so innocent that he leaueth no man fautlesse before hym. The Lorde goeth forth in tempest and stormy wether, the cloudes are the dust of his fete. ⁴ When he reproueth the sea, he drieth it vp, and turneth all the floudes to drye lande. Basan is desolate, Charmel & the pleasure of Lybanus wasteth awaye. ⁵ The mountaynes tremble for him, the hylles consume. At the syght of hym, the earth quaketh: yee the whole world, and all that dwell therin. ⁶ Who maye endure before his wrath? Or who is able to abyde hys gryme displeasure? His anger taketh on lyke fyre, and the harde rockes burst in sunder before hym. ⁷ Full gracious is the Lorde, and a stronge holde in the tyme of trouble, he knoweth them that put their truste in hym:

⁷² To fulfyll the mercy promysed to oure fathers, and to remember his holye couenaunt.

²⁸ For we knowe that all thynges worke for the beste vnto them that loue God, whyche also are called of purpose.

¹² Happy is the man that endureth in temptacyon, for when he is tryed, he shal receyue the croune of lyfe, which the Lorde hath promised to them that loue hym.

⁵ Harken my deare beloued brethren. Hath not God chosen the pore of thys world, which are ryche in faythe, and heyres of the kyngedome whiche he promysed to them that loue hym?

⁸ If we saye that we haue no sinne, we deceiue oure selues, and trueth is not in vs. ⁹ If we knowledge oure sinnes, he is faythfull and iust, to forgeue vs our sinnes, and to clense vs from al vnrightuousnes. ¹⁰ If we say we haue not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in vs.

² In thys we know, that we loue the children of God, when we loue God and kepe his commaundementes. ³ This is the loue of God, that we kepe his commaundementes, and his commaundementes are not greuous.

⁴⁷ yet yf they turne agayne vnto their hertes in the lande where they be in captiuite, and returne and praye vnto the in the lande of them that holde them captiue, sayinge: we haue synned & haue done wyckedlye & haue trespaced, ⁴⁸ & so turne agayne vnto the with all their hertes and all their soules in the land of their enemyes which holde them captyue, and praye vnto the, towarde the land which thou gauest vnto their fathers, & towarde the cytie which thou hast chosen, and house which I haue buylt for thy name: ⁴⁹ then heare thou their prayer & supplicacion vp to heauen thy dwellyng place, & iudge their causes, ⁵⁰ and be mercyfull vnto thy people that haue synned agaynst the, and vnto all their trespace that they haue trespaced agaynst the, and get the fauoure in the syght of them that hold them captyue that they may haue compassyon on them.

³⁷ yet yf theyr hertes come to them agayne in the lande where they be in captiuite, and turne and praye vnto the in the land where they be in captiuite, saying: we haue synned & haue done euyl & wickedly ³⁸ & turne agayne to the, wyth all theyr hertes & all theyr soules, in the lande of theyr captyuite where they be kepte in bondage, and so praye towarde theyr lande which thou gauest vnto theyr fathers, and cytye which thou hast chosen, and to thys house whiche I haue built for thy name: ³⁹ Then heare from heauen thy dwellyng place, their supplicacyon & prayers & iudge theyr cause, and be mercifull vnto thy people, though they haue synned against the.

⁶ and sayde. My God I am ashamed, and darre not lyfte vp myne eyes vnto the my God: for our wyckednesses are growne ouer our heade, & oure trespaces are waxen greate vnto the heauen.

⁶ let thyne eares herken & thyne eyes be open, that thou mayeste heare the prayer of thy seruaunte, whiche I praye nowe before the daye and nyghte for the chyldren of Israel thy seruauntes, and knowledge the synnes of the chyldren of Israel, which we haue commytted agaynst the. And I and my fathers house haue synned also. ⁷ We haue bene corrupt vnto the, in that we haue not kepte the commaundementes, statutes and lawes, which thou commaundedst thy seruaunt Moyses. ⁸ Yet call to remembraunce the word that thou commaundest thy seruaunt Moses, and saydeste: Yf ye transgresse, then wyll I scater you abroade among the nacyons.

³³ Thou arte ryghteous in all that thou haste broughte vpon vs, for thou haste done ryghte. ³⁴ As for vs, we haue bene vngodly, and oure kynges, princes priestes and fathers haue not done after thy lawe, nor regarded thy commaundementes, & thy earnest exhortacyons wherewith thou hast exhorted them,

²¹ For I haue kepte the wayes of the Lord: and haue not behaued my selfe wickedly agaynst my God.

⁶ We haue synned wyth oure fathers, we haue done amysse, we haue dealt wyckedlye.

¹⁰² I shrynke not from thy iudgementes, for thou teachest me.

⁶ As for vs, we go all astraye (lyke shepe) euery one turneth hys owne waye. But thorow hym, the Lorde pardoneth all oure synnes.

¹³ Namely transgresse and dissemble agaynst the Lorde, and fall awaye from oure God: vsinge presumptuous and trayterous ymaginacions, and castynge false matters in oure hertes.

⁵ Thou helpest him that doeth ryght with cherefulnesse, and them that thyncke vpon thy wayes. But lo, thou art angry, for we offend and haue euer be in sinne, there is not one whole. ⁶ We are al as vncleane thinge, and all oure ryghteousnesses are as the clothes defyled with the floures of a woman: we fall euerychone as the leafe, for oure synnes carye vs awaie like the winde. ⁷ There is no man that calleth vpon thy name, that standeth vp to take hold by the. Therfore hydest thou thy face from vs, and consumest vs, because of oure synnes.

²⁵ So do we also slepe in oure confusyon, and shame couereth vs: for we and oure fathers from oure youth vp vnto thys daye haue sinned agaynste the Lorde oure God, and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lord oure God.

⁷ Doutles oure owne wickednesse rewarde vs: But Lorde do thou accordinge to thy name, though oure transgressyons and synnes be many.

²⁰ Res. Consydre (O Lorde) how I am troubled, my wombe is dysquyeted, my herte turneth about in me, and I am full of heuynes. The swearde hurteth me without, and within I am lyke vnto death.

⁹ And they that escape from you, shall thyncke vpon me amonge the Heathen, where they shalbe in captiuyte. As for that whorysh & vnfaythfull herte of theirs, wherwyth they runne awaye fro me, I wyll breake it: yee and put oute those eyes of theirs, that commytte fornicacyon with their Idols. Then shall they be ashamed, and displeased wyth their selues, for the wyckednesses & abhomynacions, which they haue done:

² First when the Lorde spake vnto Oseas, he sayde vnto him: Go thy waye, take an harlot to thy wyfe, and get chyldren by her: for the lande hath committed greate whordome agaynst the Lorde.

⁷ ye are gone away from myne ordinaunces, and sens the time of your forefathers haue ye not kepte them. Turne you now vnto me, and I will turne me vnto you, sayeth the Lorde of hostes: ye saye: wherin shall we turne?

¹² Take hede brethren, that there be in none of you an euyll herte in vnbeleue, that he shoulde departe from the lyuinge God:

¹³ And the Lorde testifyed to Israel & to Iuda, by all the Prophetes & by al the sears sayinge: Turne from youre wicked wayes & kepe my commaundementes & myne ordinaunces accordynge to all the lawes which I commaunded youre fathers, & as I sente to you by my seruauntes the prophetes. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding they wolde not heare, but hardened their neckes, lyke to the neckes of their fathers that dyd not beleue the Lorde theyr God.

¹⁰ And when the Lorde speake to Manasseh and to hys people, they attended not to hym.

¹⁵ And the Lord God of theyr fathers sent to them by his messengers, sendynge them be tymes: for he had compassyon on hys people & on his dwellynge place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God & despised theyr wordes & mysse vsed his prophetes, vntyll the wrath of the Lord so arose agaynst hys people that it was past remeadie.

⁷ Sence the tyme of oure fathers haue we bene in greate trespace vnto this day, and because of oure wyckednesses haue we and oure kinges ben delyuered into the hand of the kynges of the nacyons, into the swerde, into captyuite, into spoyle, and into confusion of face as it is come to passe thys daye.

³⁴ As for vs, we haue bene vngodly, and oure kynges, princes priestes and fathers haue not done after thy lawe, nor regarded thy commaundementes, & thy earnest exhortacyons wherewith thou hast exhorted them,

¹⁰ They darre saye to the Prophetes: Intromytte youre selues with nothynge, and vnto the Sothsayers: tell vs of nothynge for to come, but speake frendlye wordes vnto vs, & preache vs false thinges. ¹¹ Treade oute of the waye, go out of the path, turne the holye one of Israel from vs.

¹⁶ Thus sayth the Lorde: go into the streates considre and make inquisicion for the old way and yf it be the good and right waye, then go therein, that ye maye fynde rest for your soules. But they saye: we wyll not walcke therin ¹⁷ and I wil set watchemen ouer you, & therfore take hede vnto the voyce of the trompet. But they saye: we wyll not take hede.

¹³ And now, thoughe ye haue done all these dedes (sayth the Lorde) & I my selfe rose vp euer by tymes to warne you & to comen wyth you yet wolde ye not heare me: I called, ye wolde not aunswere.

²⁵ And thys haue they done, from the tyme that youre fathers came oute of Egypte, vnto thys daye. Neuertheles, I sente vnto them my seruauntes all the Prophetes. I rose vp earlye & sente them worde, ²⁶ yet wolde they not herken, nor offre me theyr eares, but were obstynate and worse then theyr fathers.

³ From the .xiij. yeare of Iosiah the sonne of Amon kynge of Iuda, vnto this present daye (that is euen .xxiij. yeare) the worde of the Lorde hath bene commytted vnto me. And so I haue spoken to you, I haue rysen vp early I haue geuen you warnyng in season, but ye wolde not heare me. ⁴ Though the Lorde hath sent his seruauntes, all the prophetes vnto you in season: Yet wolde ye not obeye, ye wolde not enclyne youre eares to heare. ⁵ He sayde: turne agayne euery man from hys euell waye, & from your wicked ymaginacions, and so shall ye dwell for euer in the lande, that the Lorde promesed you & youre forefathers: ⁶ And go not after straunge goddes serue them not, worshipe them not, and angre me not wyth the worckes of youre handes: then wyll not I punish you. ⁷ Neuertheles, ye wolde not heare me (sayeth the Lorde) but haue defyed me with the worckes of youre handes, to youre owne greate harme.

⁵ and to heare the wordes of my seruauntes the Prophetes, whome I sente vnto you, rysynge vp tymelye, and styl sendyng: If ye wyll not folowe them (I saye)

¹⁹ and that because they haue not bene obedyent vnto my commaundementes (sayeth the Lorde) whiche I sente vnto them by my seruauntes the prophetes. I stode vp earlye, and sent vnto them, but they wolde not heare, sayeth the Lorde.

³² because of the great blasphemies of the chyldren of Israell, and Iuda, whiche they haue done to prouoke me: yea, they, their kynges, their princes, their priestes their prophetes, whole Iuda, and al the cytesins of Ierusalem. ³³ When I stode vp earlye, and taught them and instructe them, they turned their backes to me, and not their faces.

⁴ How be it, I sent vnto them my seruauntes al the prophetes: I rose vp earlye, I sent vnto them, and gaue them warninge: O do no such abhominable thinges, & thinges that I hate. ⁵ But they woulde not folow nor herken, to turne from their wyckednes, and to do no more sacrifice vnto straung Goddes.

¹⁶ As for the wordes that thou hast spoken vnto vs in the name of the Lorde, we will in no wyse heare them:

¹⁰ and haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lorde oure God, to walke in his lawes, which he layed before vs by his seruauntes the prophetes:

⁴ Be not ye lyke youre forefathers, vnto whom the Prophetes cryed afore tyme, sayinge: Thus sayeth the Lord God of hostes. Turne you from youre euyll wayes, & from your wicked ymaginacyons. But thei wolde not heare, nor regarde me, sayeth the Lorde. ⁵ What is nowe become of your forefathers & the prophetes? are they yet styll aliue? ⁶ But dyd not my wordes and statutes (which I commaunded by my seruauntes the prophetes) touche your forefathers? Vpon this, they gaue aunswere and sayde: lyke as the Lord of hostes deuysed to do vnto vs, accordynge to oure owne wayes & ymagynacyons, euen so hath he dealte wyth vs.

⁸ And the worde of the Lorde came vnto Zachary, saying: ⁹ Thus sayeth the Lord of Hostes: Execute true iudgement: shew mercy & louinge kindnesse, euery man to his brother. ¹⁰ Do the widdow, the fatherlesse, the straunger, and poore no wronge: and let no man ymagen euil against his brother in his hert. ¹¹ Neuertheles they would not take hede, but turned their backes, & stopped their eares, that they should not heare: ¹² yea, they made their hertes as an Adamant stone, least they should hear the law & wordes, whiche the Lorde of hostes sent in his holy spirite by the Prophetes afore tyme. Wherfore the Lorde of hostes was verye wroth at them.

³⁴ And when the tyme of the frute drewe neare, he sente hys seruauntes to the husbandmen to receyue the fruytes of it. ³⁵ And the husbandmen caughte hys seruauntes and bet one, kylled another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Agayne he sent other seruauntes, mo then the fyrste, and they serued them lykewyse. ³⁷ But last of all, he sent vnto them hys owne sonne, sayinge: they wyll feare my sonne. ³⁸ But when the husbandmen sawe the sonne, they sayde amonge them selues. Thys is the heyre: come let vs kyll hym, and let vs take hys enheritaunce to oure selues. ³⁹ And they caughte hym and thruste him out of the vyneyard, and slewe hym. ⁴⁰ When the Lorde of the vyneyard cometh, what wyll he do with those husbandmen?

³⁷ Ierusalem, Ierusalem which killest prophetes, and stone them which are sent to the: howe often would I haue gathered thy children together: as the henne gathered her chikens vnder her winges, but ye would not.

¹⁰ And when the tyme was come, he sente a seruaunt to hys tenauntes that they shoulde geue hym of the fruytes of the vyneyarde. And the tenauntes dyd beate hym, & sent him awaye empty. ¹¹ And agayne he sent yet another seruaunt. And they dyd beate him, & foule entreated hym also, & sent hym awaye emptye. ¹² Moreouer, he sent the third to, & hym they wounded, and cast out.

⁵¹ Ye styfe necked, and of vncyrcumcysed hertes and eares, ye haue al wayes resisted the holye ghoste as your fathers dyd, so do ye. ⁵² Whyche of the prophetes haue not your fathers persecuted? And they haue slayne them, which shewed before of the comminge of the iuste whom ye haue nowe betrayed and mordred.

²⁷ The inhabiters of Ierusalem & theyr rulers, because they knowe him not, nor yet the voices of the prophetes which are reade euerye Saboth daye, they haue fulfylled them in condempnyng hym.

¹⁵ Which as they kylled the Lorde Iesus and theyr owne prophetes, euen so haue they persecuted vs, and God they please not, and are contrarye to all men, ¹⁶ and forbid vs to preache vnto the Gentyls, that they might be saued to fulfyll theyr synnes alwaye. For the wrathe of God is come on them, euen to the vtmost.

³³ And I wyl strawe you among the Heathen, and wyl draw out a swerde after you, and youre land shal be waste, and your cityes desolate. ³⁴ Then the Lande shall reioyce in hyr Sabbothes, as longe as it lyeth voyde and ye in youre enemyes lande: euen then shal the Lande kepe holy day and reioyce in hir Sabbothes.

²⁷ And the Lorde shal scatter you among nations, & ye shalbe left fewe in numbre among the people whyther the lord shal bryng you,

⁴ He is a rocke and perfect are his dedes for al hys wayes are with descrecion. God is faythful, & without wyckednes, both ryghtuouse and iust is he.

⁶ And in the nynthe yeare of Hosea, the kynge of Assyrya toke Samaria & caryed Israel away vnto Assyrya, & put them in Hala, in Habor on the riuer of Gozan, & in the cytyes of the Medes. ⁷ For the chyldren of Israel had synned agaynst the Lorde theyr God whiche brought them oute of the lande of Egypt, from vnder the hande of Pharao kyng of Egypt, and feared other Goddes.

⁶ and sayde. My God I am ashamed, and darre not lyfte vp myne eyes vnto the my God: for our wyckednesses are growne ouer our heade, & oure trespaces are waxen greate vnto the heauen. ⁷ Sence the tyme of oure fathers haue we bene in greate trespace vnto this day, and because of oure wyckednesses haue we and oure kinges ben delyuered into the hand of the kynges of the nacyons, into the swerde, into captyuite, into spoyle, and into confusion of face as it is come to passe thys daye.

¹³ And after all thys that is come vpon vs (because of oure euyll deades & greate trespace) thou oure God hast spared oure wyckednesse, and hast geuen vs a delyueraunce as it is come to passe thys daye.

³³ Thou arte ryghteous in all that thou haste broughte vpon vs, for thou haste done ryghte.

¹⁵ My confusion is dayly before me, and the shame of my face couereth me.

⁴ Agaynst the only, agaynst the haue I sinned, & done euel in thy sight: that thou mightest be iustified in thy saynges, and shouldest ouercome when thou art iudged.

¹⁴ Deliuer me from bloude giltinesse, O God, thou that art the God of my health, that my tonge may prayse thy righteousnesse.

¹³⁷ Zade. Ryghteous art thou, O Lorde, and true is thy judgement.

¹¹ At the same tyme shal the Lord take in hande agayne, to conquere the remnaunt of hys people (whiche are left alyue.) From the Assirians, Egypcians, Arabians, Morians, Elamites, Ealdeyes, Antiochiaus, and Ilandes of the sea.

¹⁶ Confounded be ye, and put to dishonour: go hence together with shame, all ye that be worckmaysters of erroure: (that is worshippers of Idols)

²⁶ Lyke as a thefe that is taken with the dede commeth to shame, euen so is the house of Israell come to confusyon, the comen people their kynges and rulers, their priestes & prophetes. ²⁷ For they saye to a stocke: thou art my father, and to a stone: thou hast be gotten me, yea they haue turned their backe vpon me, & not their face. But in the tyme of their trouble, when they saye: stande vp, and helpe vs,

¹ O Lorde, thou art more rightuous then that I shulde dyspute with the: Neuertheles, lett me talke wyth the in thynges resonable. How happeneth it, that the waye of the vngodlye is so prosperous: and that it goeth so well with them, which (without eny shame) offende and lyue in wyckednesse?

⁹ And wyll make them to be a reprofe, a comen by worde, a laughinge stocke and shame, in all the places, where I shall scatre them.

⁶³ that thou mayest thyncke vpon it, be ashamed, and excuse thine owne confusyon no more: when I haue forgeuen the, all that thou hast done, sayeth the Lorde God.

³¹ Then shall ye remembre your, owne wicked wayes, & youre ymagynacyons, whiche were not good: so that ye shall take displeasure at youre owne selues, by reason of youre synnes & abhominacyons.

⁸ Yea O Lorde, vnto vs, to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers: euen to vs all, that haue offended the, belongeth open shame.

¹⁴ Therefore hathe the Lorde made haste, to brynge this plage vpon vs, for the Lorde our God is ryghteous, in all his worckes which he doeth: for why, we woulde not herken vnto his voyce.

⁹ For lo thys I promyse: though I syfte the house of Israell amonge all nacyons (like as they vse to lyfte in a syue) yet shall not the smallest grauell stone fall vpon the earth:

⁴⁰ The other aunswered and rebuked him saiyng. Neither fearest thou God, because thou art in the same damnacion? ⁴¹ We are ryghtuously punished, for we receyued accordinge to our dedes. But this man hath done nothinge amisse.

⁵ And there were dwelling at Hierusalem Iewes, deuout men, whyche were of all nations vnder heauen. ⁶ When thys was noysed aboute, the multitude came together & were astonied, because that euery man hearde them speake hys owne toung. ⁷ They wondred all & merueyled sayinge among them selues: Behold are not al these which speake of Galile? ⁸ And how heare we euery man his own tounge wherin we were borne? ⁹ Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, and the inhabiters of Mesopotamia, of Iewry, and of Cappadocia, and of Ponthus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrysia, Pamphilia, and of Egypte, and of the parties of Libia, which is besyde Syren, and straungers of Rome, Iewes, and conuertes, ¹¹ Grekes, and Arabians: we haue heard them speake: wyth our owne tounges the great workes of God.

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those thynges, where of ye are nowe ashamed. For the ende of those thynges is deathe.

²⁰ We knowlege (O Lorde) all oure mysdedes, & the synnes of oure fathers, that we haue offended the.

⁷ Zain. Now doth Ierusalem remembre the tyme of her misery & dysobedience, yee the ioye and pleasure that she hath had in tymes past: seynge her people is brought downe thorow the power of their enemie, & there is no man for to helpe her: her enemies stande lokinge at her & laugh her Sabbath dayes to scorne. ⁸ Heth. Ierusalem synned euer more & more, therfore is she come in decaye. All they that had her in honour, despyse her: for they haue sene her fylthynesse. Yee she sygheth, and is a shamed of her selfe.

¹⁸ Zade. The Lorde is ryghtuous, for I haue prouoked his contenaunce vnto anger. O take hede all ye people, and consydre my heuynes: My maydens and my younge men are led awaye into captyuytye.

⁴² We haue bene dyssemblers, and haue offended, wylt thou therfore not be intreated?

¹⁶ The garlande of oure head is fallen: alas, that euer we synned so sore.

¹⁷ and refused to heare, and were not myndefull of the wonders that thou dyddeste for them: but became obstynate & heady in so muche that they turned backe to theyr bondage in theyr disobedience. But thou my God forgauest, and wast gracyous, mercyfull, pacyente, and of greate goodnesse, and forsokest them not. ¹⁸ And thoughe they made a moulten calfe (and sayde: Thys is thy God, that brought the oute of the lande of Egypte) & dyd greate blasphemyes, ¹⁹ yet forsokeste thou them not in the wyldernes, accordynge to thy great mercye. And the cloudye pyler departed not from them on the daye tyme to leade them the way neyther the pyler of fyre in the nyght season, to shewe them lyghte in the waye that they wente.

²⁶ Neuerthelesse they were disobedient, & rebelled against the, and caste thy lawe behynde their backes, and slewe thy Prophetes (which exhorted them so earnestlye, that they shulde conuerte vnto the) and dyd greate blasphemyes. ²⁷ Therfore gauest thou them ouer into the hande of theyr enemyes that vexed them. And in the tyme of theyr trouble they cried vnto the, and thou hardest them from heauen and thorowe thy greate mercye thou gaueste them sauyours, which helped them oute of the hande of theyr enemyes. ²⁸ But when they came to reste, they turned backe agayne to do euyll before the: therefore lefteste thou them in the hande of theyr ennemyes, so that they had the domynyon ouer them. So they conuerted, and cryed vnto the, and thou heardeste them from heauen, and manye tymes haste thou delyuered them accordynge to thy greate mercye,

³¹ But for thy greate mercyes sake thou haste not vtterlye consumed them, nether forsaken them: for thou arte a gracyous and mercyfull God.

¹² That thou Lorde arte mercyfull, and that thou rewardeste euerye man accordynge to his worckes.

⁵ For thou Lorde arte good and gracyous, and of greate mercye vnto all them that call vpon the.

¹⁵ But thou, O Lord God, art ful of compassion, and mercy, long suffring, great in goodnes and truth.

⁴³ Many a tyme did he delyuer them but they prouoked him wyth theyr owne inuencyons and were broughte downe for theyr wyckednesse. ⁴⁴ Neuertheles when he saw their aduersitie he herd their complaynt. ⁴⁵ He thought vpon hys couenaunt, and pytyed them, accordyng vnto the multytude of hys mercyes.

⁴ But ther is mercy wyth the, that thou maiest be feared.

⁷ Let Israel trust in the Lord, for wyth the Lorde there is mercy and plenteouse redempcyon.

⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful, longe sufferyng, and of great goodnesse. ⁹ The Lorde is louynge vnto euery man, & hys mercy is ouer all hys workes.

⁷ Let the vngodly man forsake his wayes & the vnrighteous his ymaginacions, & turne agayne vnto the Lorde: so shall he be mercyfull vnto him: & to oure God, for he is redy to forgeue.

⁷ I wyl declare the goodnesse of the Lorde, yea and the prayse of the Lorde for all that he hath geuen vs, for the great good that he hath done for Israel: whyche he hath geuen them of hys owne fauoure, and accordynge to the multytude of hys louynge kyndnesses.

²² Heth. Namely, that the mercyes of the Lord are not cleane gone, and that hys louynge kyndnesse ceasseth not. ²³ His faythfulnes is greate, and renueth it selfe as the mournynge.

⁸ But they rebelled agaynst me, and would not folowe me, to cast awaye euery man the abhominacions of his eyes, & to forsake the Idoles of Egipte. Then I made to poure my indignacion ouer them, and to satisfye my wrath vpon them, yea euen in the myddest of the lande of Egipte. ⁹ But I woulde not do it, for my names sake, that it shoulde not be vnhalowed before the Heathen, amonge whom they dwelt, and among whom I shewed my selfe vnto them, that it woulde brynge them out of the lande of Egipte.

¹³ And yet the house of Israel rebelled agaynste me in the wildernesse, they woulde not walcke in my commaundementes, they haue cast awaye my lawes (whiche whoso kepeth, shoulde lyue in them) and my Sabboth dayes haue thy greatly vnhalowed. Then I made me to poure oute my indignacion vpon them, and to consume them in the wyldernesse.

⁵ We haue synned, we haue offended, we haue ben disobedient and gone back: yea we haue departed from all thy preceptes and iudgementes.

⁷ O Lorde, ryghteousnesse belongeth vnto the, vnto vs pertayneth nothynge but open shame, as it is come to passe this day vnto euery man of Iuda and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Yea, vnto all Israell, whether they be farre or nye thorow out all landes: wherin thou haste strowed them, because of the offences that they had done agaynst the.

² And he prayed vnto the Lord, & sayde: O Lord was not thys my sayinge (I praye the) when I was yet in my countre? therfore I hasted rather to fle vnto Tharsis, for I know well ynough that thou art a mercyfull God, full of compassion, long sufferyng, & of a great kyndnesse, & repentest when thou shuldest take punishment.

¹⁸ Where is there such a God as thou? that pardonest wickednes, and forgeuest the offences of the remnaunte of thyne herytage? He kepeth not hys wrath for euer. And why? his delyte is to haue compassyon: ¹⁹ he shal turne agayne, and be mercyfull to vs: he shall put doune oure wyckednesses, and caste all oure synnes into the botome of the sea.

⁶ to the prayse of the glory of hys grace, wherewith he hath made vs accepted in the beloued. ⁷ By whome we haue redemption thorowe hys bloude, euen the forgeuenes of synnes accordyng to the ryches of hys grace ⁸ he shedde on vs aboundauntlye in all wysdome & perseueraunce.

⁴ But God whiche is ryche in mercye thorow his great loue wherewith he loued vs, ⁵ euen when we were dead by synne, hath quickened vs together in Christ (for by grace are ye saued) ⁶ and hath rayseth vs vp together, & made vs sitte together in heauenly thynges thorowe Christ Iesu, ⁷ for to shewe in tymes to come the excedinge riches of hys grace in kyndnes to vswarde in Christe Iesus.

¹³ And the Lorde testifyed to Israel & to Iuda, by all the Prophetes & by al the sears sayinge: Turne from youre wicked wayes & kepe my commaundementes & myne ordinaunces accordynge to all the lawes which I commaunded youre fathers, & as I sente to you by my seruauntes the prophetes. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding they wolde not heare, but hardened their neckes, lyke to the neckes of their fathers that dyd not beleue the Lorde theyr God. ¹⁵ And they refused his ordinaunce & his appoyntemente that he had made wyth theyr fathers, and the wytnesse which he had witnessed to them, and folowed vanitie and became vayne, lyke to the hethen that were rounde aboute them, of whiche the Lorde had charged them, that they shuld not do lyke them.

¹² because they wolde not herken vnto the voyce of the Lorde theyr God. But transgressed hys appoyntemente, and all that Moses the seruaunt of the Lord commaunded, and wolde neyther heare nor do.

¹⁰ And now O our God, what shall we say after thys? for we haue forsaken thy commaundementes, ¹¹ whiche thou hast commaunded by thy seruauntes the Prophetes, and sayde: The lande vnto whiche ye go to possesse, it is an vncleane land thorow the fylthynes of the people of the landes, in their abhominacyons, wherwyth they haue made it ful of vnclennes on euery syde.

¹³ Thou camest doune also vpon mount Sinai, and spakest vnto them from heauen, and gaueste them ryght iudgementes, true lawes good commaundementes and statutes, ¹⁴ and declaredeste vnto them thy holye Sabboth, & commaundedst them preceptes, ordinaunces, and lawes, by Moses thy seruaunte: ¹⁵ and gaueste them breade from heauen when they were hongrye, and broughtest forthe water for them out of the rock when they were thyrstye: and promysedest them, that they shulde go in, and take possessyon of the lande, ouer whiche thou haddest lyfte vp thyne hande for to geue them. ¹⁶ But oure fathers were proude and hardnecked, so that they folowed not the commaundementes, ¹⁷ and refused to heare, and were not myndefull of the wonders that thou dyddeste for them: but became obstynate & heady in so muche that they turned backe to theyr bondage in theyr disobedience. ⁶ We woulde neuer folowe thy seruauntes the Prophetes, that spake in thy name to our kinges and princes, to oure forefathers, and to all the people of the lande.

¹ God in tyme paste diuerselye and manye wayes, spake vnto the fathers by Prophetes,

¹⁴ But and if ye will not herken vnto me, nor wyll do all these my commaundementes, ¹⁵ or if ye shal despise myne ordinaunces either if youre Soule refuse my lawes, so that ye wyl not do al my commaundementes, but shal breake myne appoyntmente: ¹⁶ then I wyll do this agayne vnto you: I wyl viset you with vexacions, swellinge & feuers, that shall make your eyes dasel, & wt sorowes of herte. And ye shall sowe your seede in vayne, for youre enemyes shall eate it. ¹⁷ And I wyll sette my face agaynst you & ye shall fal before youre enemyes, & they that hate you shall raygne ouer you, and ye shall flee when no man foloweth you. ¹⁸ And if ye wyl not yet for all thys herken vnto me, then wil I punyshe you seuen times more for youre synnes, ¹⁹ and wyll breake the pride of your strength. For I wyll make the heauen ouer you as harde as yron, & youre lande as harde as brasse. ²⁰ And so youre labour shall be spent in vayne. For your land shal not gyue hyr encrease, neyther the trees of the land shal gyue their fruites. ²¹ And if ye walke contrarye vnto me and wyll not herken vnto me, I wyll brynge seuen tymes mo plages vpon you accordyng to your synnes. ²² I wyl send in wyld beastes vpon you, whyche shall robbe you of your chyldren & destroy your cattell, & make you so fewe in numbre that your hye wayes shal grow vnto a wyldernes. ²³ And if ye wyll not be learned yet for all thys but shall walke contrary vnto me, ²⁴ then wyll I also walke contrarye vnto you and wyll punyshe you yet seuen times for your synnes. ²⁵ I wyl send a swerd vpon you, that shall auenge my testament wyth you. And when ye are fledde vnto your cityes, I wyll sende the pestilence amonge you, ye shal be deliuered into the handes of your enemies. ²⁶ And when I haue broken the staffe of your bread: that .x. wyues shall bake your breade in one ouen and men shall deliuer you youre bread agayne by wayght, then shall ye eate and not be satisfied. ²⁷ And if ye wyll not yet for all thys herken vnto me, but shal walke contrary vnto me, ²⁸ then I wyll walke contrarye vnto you also wrathfullye and wyll also chastyce you seuen tymes for youre synnes: ²⁹ so that ye shall eate the flesh of your sonnes & the fleshe of youre daughters. ³⁰ And I wyll destroy your alters bylt vpon hye hylles, and ouerthrow youre images and caste youre carkasses vpon the bodyes of your idolles, and my soule shall abhorre you. ³¹ And I wyl make your cityes desolate, and brynge your sanctuaries vnto nought, and wyll not smel the sauoures of your swete odoures. ³² And I wyl brynge the lande vnto a wyldernesse: so that your enemies whych dwell therin shal wonder at it. ³³ And I wyl strawe you among the Heathen, and wyl draw out a swerde after you, and youre land shal be waste, and your cityes desolate. ³⁴ Then the Lande shall reioyce in hyr Sabbothes, as longe as it lyeth voyde and ye in youre enemyes lande: euen then shal the Lande kepe holy day and reioyce in hir Sabbothes. ³⁵ And as longe as it lyeth voyde it shall rest, for that it could not rest in your Sabothes, when ye dwelt therin. ³⁶ And vpon them that are left a liue of you I wyl sende a fayntnes into theyr hertes, in all the land of their enemies: so that the sound of a leaf that falleth, shall chase them & they shall flee as though they fled a swerde, and shall fal, no man folowyng them. ³⁷ And they shal fal, one vpon another, as it were before a swerde, euen no man folowyng them, and ye shal haue no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ And ye shall peryshe amonge the Heathen, and the land of your enemies shal eate you vp. ³⁹ And they that are lefte of you, shall pyne away in theyr vnryghtuousnes, euen in their enymyes lande, and also in the misdedes of their fathers shall they consume. ⁴⁰ And they shall confesse theyr misdeades and the mysdeades of theyr fathers in theyr trespaces, which they haue trespaced agaynst me, & for that also that they haue walked contrary to me. ⁴¹ Therfore I also wyl walke contrarye vnto them, and wyl brynge theym into the lande of theyr enemies. And then at the least waye theyr vncircumcised hertes shalbe tamed, & then they shall make an atonement for theyr mysdeades. ⁴² And I wyl remembre my bond with Iacob, and my testament wyth Isaac, and my testament wyth Abraham, and wyll thynke on the lande. ⁴³ For the Lande shall be lefte of them and shall haue pleasure in hyr Sabbothes, whyle she lyeth wast wythout them, & they shall make on atonement for theyr misdeades, bicause they despised my lawes and theyr soules refused mine ordinaunces. ⁴⁴ And yet for all that when they be in the Lande of their enemy, I wyll not so cast them away nor my soule shal not so abhorre them, that I wyll vtterlye destroye theym and breake myne appoyntment with them: for I am the Lord theyr God. ⁴⁵ I wyl therfore remembre vnto them the fyrst couenaunte made, when I brought them out of the Lande of Egypte in the syght of the Heathen to be their God: for I am the Lorde. ⁴⁶ These are the ordinaunces, iudgmentes, & lawes whych the Lord made betwene hym and the chyldren of Israell in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

¹⁵ Cursed be he that maketh anye carued ymage or ymage of metall (an abhominacion vnto the Lord, the worke of the hands of the craftesman) and putteth it in a secret place: and all the people shall answere & saye Amen. ¹⁶ Cursed be he that curseth hys father or his mother, and all the people shall saye Amen. ¹⁷ Cursed be he that remoueth his neighbours marcke and all the people shall saye Amen. ¹⁸ Cursed be he that maketh the blynd go out of his waye, & all the people shall saye Amen. ¹⁹ Cursed be he that hyndreth the right of the straunger, fatherlesse and wydowe, and all the people shall saye Amen. ²⁰ Cursed be he that lyeth wyth hys fathers wyfe because he hath opened hys fathers couerynge, and all the people shal saye Amen. ²¹ Cursed be he that lyeth wyth anye maner beast, and all the people shall saye Amen. ²² Cursed be he that lieth wt his syster whether shee be the daughter of hys father or of hys mother, and all the people shall saye Amen. ²³ Cursed be that lyeth wyth hys mother in lawe, and all the people shall saye Amen. ²⁴ Cursed be he that smiteth his neyghbour secretly, and all the people shall saye Amen. ²⁵ Cursed be he that taketh a rewarde to sle innocent bloude, & all the people shal saye Amen. ²⁶ Cursed be he that mayntayneth not the wordes of thys lawe to do them, and all the people shal say Amen.

¹⁵ But and yf thou wilt not herken vnto the voice of the Lord thy God to kepe and to do al his commaundementes and ordinaunces which I commaunde the thys day: then all these curses shall come vpon the & ouertake the: ¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the towne, & cursed in the felde, ¹⁷ cursed shall thyne aulmery be & thy store. ¹⁸ Cursed shal the frute of thy body & the frute of thy lande be & the frute of thyne oxen & the flockes of thy shepe. ¹⁹ And cursed shalt thou be when thou goest in, & when thou goest out. ²⁰ And the Lorde shall sende vpon the cursynge, goyinge to nought & complanynge in all that thou settest thyne hande to whatsoeuer thou doest: vntyl thou be destroyed & brought to nought quyckely, because of the wickednesse of thyne inuencions in that thou hast forsaken the Lorde. ²¹ And the Lorde shall make the pestilence cleaue vnto the, vntyll he haue consumed the from the land whether thou goest to enioye it. ²² And the Lord shall smyte the with swellynge, with feuers, heet, bunrynge, wetherynge, with smytynge and blastynge. And they shall folowe the vntyll thou peryshe. ²³ And the heauen that is ouer thy head shalbe brasse, & the erthe that is vnder the, yeron. ²⁴ And the Lorde shall turne the rayne of the land vnto powder & dust: euen from heauen they shall come doune vpon the, vntyll thou be brought to nought. ²⁵ And the Lorde shall plage the before thyne enmyes: Thou shalt come out one waye agaynste them, and flee seuen wayes before them, & shalt be scatered amonge al the kingdomes of the erth. ²⁶ And thy carkesse shalbe meate vnto all maner foules of the apre and vnto the beastes of the erth, and no man shall fraye them awaye. ²⁷ And the Lorde wyll smyte the wyth the botches of Egypt and the emoroydes, scalle & maungynesse, that thou shalt not be healed therof. ²⁸ And the Lorde shall smyte the wyth madnesse, blyndnesse & dasyng of herte. ²⁹ And thou shalt grope at none dayes as the blynd gropeth in darknesse, and shalt not come to the ryght waye. And thou shalt suffer wronge only & be polled euermore, and no man shall sucker the, ³⁰ thou shalt be betrawthed vnto a wyfe, and another shal lye with her. Thou shalt buylde and house & another shal dwell therin. Thou shalt plante a vyneard, & shalt not make it comen. ³¹ Thyne oxe shalbe slayne before thyne eyes, and thou shalt not eate therof. Thyne asse shalbe vyolentlye taken awaye euen bofore thy face, and shall not be restored the agayne. Thy shepe shalbe geuen vnto thyne enemyes, and no man shall helpe the. ³² Thy sonnes and thy daughters shall be geuen vnto another nacion, and thyne eyes shall se and dase vpon them all daye longe, but shalt haue no myght in thyne hande. ³³ The frute of thy lande and all thy laboures shall a nacion which thou knowest not, eate, and thou shalt but suffre vyolence only & be oppressed alwaye: ³⁴ that thou shalt be cleane besyde thy selfe for the syghte of thyne eyes which thou shalt se. ³⁵ The Lord shal smyte the wyth a myscheuous botche in the knees and legges, so that thou canst not be healed: euen from the sole of the fote vnto the toppe of the head. ³⁶ The Lord shall brynge both the and thy kynge whych thou hast sett ouer the, vnto a nacyon whych nether thou nor thy fathers haue knowne, and there thou shalt serue straunge Goddes: euen wod & stone, ³⁷ And thou shalt go to waste & be made an ensample, & a iestynge stocke vnto all nacyons whether the Lord shall carye the. ³⁸ Thou shalt carie moch seed out in the felde & shalt gather but lytle in: for the greshopers shall destroye it. ³⁹ Thou shalt plante a veynearde & dresse it, but shalt nether drynke of the wyne neither gather of the grapes, for the wormes shall eate it. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt haue olyuetrees in al thy coastes, but shalt not be anoynted with the oyle, for thyne olyue trees shalbe roted out. ⁴¹ Thou shalt get sonnes and daughters, but shalt not haue them: for they shalbe caryed awaye captiue. ⁴² All thy trees and frute of thy lande shalbe marred with blastynge. ⁴³ The straungers that are a monge you shall clyme aboue the vp on hye, and thou shalt come doune beneth alowe. ⁴⁴ He shal lende the & thou shalt not lende him, he shalbe before and thou behynde. ⁴⁵ Moreouer all these curses shall come vpon the & shall folowe the and ouertake the, tyll thou be destroyed: because thou herkenedest not vnto the voyce of the Lorde thy God, to kepe his commandementes and ordynaunces whych he commaunded the, ⁴⁶ and they shalbe vpon the as miracles and wonders & vpon thy seed for euer. ⁴⁷ And because thou seruedest not the Lord thy God wyth ioyfulnesse and with a good herte for the abundaunce of all thinges, ⁴⁸ therfore thou shalt serue thyne enemye which the Lord shall sende vpon the: in hunger and thrust, in nakednesse and in nede of all thynge: & he shall put a yocke of yeron vpon thyne necke, vntyll he haue broughte the to nought. ⁴⁹ And the Lord shal brynge a nacyon vpon the from a farre, euen from the ende of the world, as swyfte as an egle flyeth: a nacyon whose tonge thou shalt not vnderstande: ⁵⁰ a harde fauoured nacyon whiche shall not regarde the person of the olde nor haue compassion on the yonge. ⁵¹ And he shall eate the frute of thy lande and the frute of thy catell vntill he haue destroyed the: so that he shall leaue the nether corne, wyne, nor oyle, nether the encrease of thyne oxen nor the flockes of thy shepe: vntyll he haue brought the to nought. ⁵² And he shall kepe the in, in all thy cities, vntyll the hye & stronge walles be come doune wherin thou trustedest, thorow al the lande. And he shal besyege the in al thy cytyes thorow out all thy land which the Lord thy god hath geuen the. ⁵³ And thou shalt eate the frute of thyne owne body: the flesh of thi sonnes and of thy daughters whych the Lorde thy God hath geuen the, in that straytenesse & seyge wherwith thine enemye shal besyege the, ⁵⁴ so that it shal greue the man that is tender and exceadynge delycate amonge you, to loke on hys brother and vpon his wyfe that lyeth in hys bosome, & on the remnaunte of his chyldren which he hath yet lefte, ⁵⁵ for feare of geuynge vnto any of them of the flesh of his children, which he eateth, because he hath noughte lefte him in that straytenes and seyge wherwyth thyne enemyes shall besyege the in all thy cyties. ⁵⁶ Yea, and the woman that is so tender & delycate among you that she dare not aduenture to sett the sole of her foote vpon the grounde for softnesse and tendernesse, shalbe greued to loke on the husbande that lyeth in her bosome and on her sonne & on her daughter: ⁵⁷ euen because of the after byrthe, that is come out from betwene her legges, & because of her chyldren which she hath borne, because she wolde eate them for nede of all thynges secretly, in the straytenes & seyge wherwyth thyne enemye shal besyege the in thy cyties. ⁵⁸ If thou wilt not be dyligent to do all the wordes of this law that are wrytten in thys boke, for to feare this glorious and fearfull name of the Lorde thy God: ⁵⁹ the Lorde wyll smyte both the and thy sead with wonderful plages and with greate plages and of longe continuaunce, ⁶⁰ and with euell sekenesses and of longe duraunce. Moreouer he wyll brynge vpon the al the diseases of Egypt which thou wast afrayed of, and they shall cleaue vnto the. ⁶¹ Therto al maner sickenesses and all maner plages which are not wrytten in the boke of this lawe, wyll the Lord brynge vpon the vntyll thou be come to noughte. ⁶² And ye shalbe lefte fewe in nombre, where before ye were as the starres of heauen in multitude: because thou woldest not herken vnto the voyce of the Lord thy God. ⁶³ And as the Lord reioysed ouer you to do you good & to multyplye you: euen so he wil reioyse ouer you, to destroy you and to bring you to nought. And ye shalbe wasted from of the lande whether thou goest to enioye it. ⁶⁴ And the Lord shall scater the amonge all nacions from the one ende of the world vnto the other and there thou shalt serue straunge goddes, whyche nether thou nor thy fathers haue knowne: euen wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And amonge these nacyons thou shalt be no small ceason, and yet shalt haue no reste to the sole of thy foote. For the Lorde shall geue the there a tremblynge herte & dasynge eyes & sorowe of mynde. ⁶⁶ And thy lyfe shall hange before the, & thou shalt feare both day and nyght & shalt haue no trust in thy lyfe. ⁶⁷ In the mornyng thou shalt saye, wold God it were nyght. And at nyght thou shalt saye, wolde God it were mornynge: for feare of thyne herte which thou shalt feare, and for the syght of thyne eyes which thou shalt se. ⁶⁸ And the Lord shal brynge the into Egypt agayne with shyppes, by the way whych I bade the that thou shouldest se it no moare. And there ye shalbe solde vnto youre enemies, for bondmen and bondwemen: and yet no man shal bye you.

²⁰ And so the Lorde wyll not be mercyfull vnto hym, but then the wrath of the lord & his gelousye, smoke agaynst that man, & al the curses that are written in thys boke lyght vpon hym, and the Lorde do out hys name from vnder heauen, ²¹ and separate hym vnto euell out of all the trybes of Israell accordyng vnto al the curses of the appoyntement that is written in the boke of this lawe. ²² So that the generacion to come of youre chyldren that shall ryse vp after you and the straunger that shal come from a ferre land, say when they se the plages of that lande, & the diseases wherwith the Lord hath smytten it ²³ how all the land is burnt vp wyth bremstone & salt, & that it is nether sowne nor beareth, nor any grasse groweth therin, after the ouerthrowing of Sodome, Gomor, Adama and Zeboim: which the Lord ouerthrewe in his wrath and angre. ²⁴ And then shal al nacions also say: wherfore hath the Lorde done of this facion vnto this lande? O how fearse is this great wrath? ²⁵ And men shal saye: because they lefte the testament of the Lorde God of their fathers which he made with them, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went & serued straunge goddes & worshipped them: goddes which they knew not and which had geuen them nought. ²⁷ And therfore the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote vpon that lande to bryng vpon it all the curses that are written in this boke. ²⁸ And the Lorde cast them out of their lande in angre, wrath and greate furyousnesse, and cast them in to a straunge land, as it is come to passe this day. ²⁹ The secrettes of the Lord oure God are opened vnto vs and our children for euer, that we do all the wordes of this lawe.

¹⁷ But and if thyne hert turne away, so that thou wylte not heare: but shalt go astraye & worshyp straunge Goddes and serue them, ¹⁸ I pronounce vnto you thys daye, that ye shall surely perysh, and that ye shal not prolonge your daies vpon the land whither thou passest ouer Iordan to go and possesse it. ¹⁹ I cal to recorde thys daye vnto you, heauen and earth, that I haue set before you life and death, blessynge & cursinge: but chose lyfe, that thou, and thy sede may liue,

¹⁷ And then my wrath wyl waxe whot against them, and I wil forsake them, and wyl hide my face from them, & they shalbe consumed And when much aduersitie and tribulation is come vpon them, then they wyll saye: bycause our God is not among vs, these tribulations are come vpon vs. ¹⁸ But I wil hide my face that same time for all the euyls sake whych they shal haue wrought, in that they are turned vnto straunge Gods.

¹⁹ And when the Lord sawe it, he was angry bicause of the prouokyng of hys sonnes and daughters. ²⁰ And he sayd: I wyl hyde my face frome them & wyll se what their ende shall be. For they are a frowarde generation & chyldren in whom is no faith. ²¹ They haue angred me wt that which is no God, & prouoked me wyth theyr vanities. And I agayne wyll anger them wyth them whiche are no people, and wyl prouoke them wyth a folysh nation. ²² For fyre is kindeled in my wrath, and shal burne vnto the bottome of hell. And shall consume the earth wyth hyr encrease, & set a fyre the bottomes of the mountaines. ²³ I wyll heape mischeues vpon them & wyl spend al myne arrowes at them. ²⁴ Burnt with hongre & consumed with heat and wt bytter pestelence. I wyll also sende the teeth of beastes vppon them and poyson serpentes. ²⁵ Withoute forthe, the swerde shal robbe them of theyr chyldren: and wythin in the chamber, feare: both younge menne and yong womenne & the suckelynges wyth the men of gray heades. ²⁶ I haue determined to skatter them thorowoute the worlde, and to make awaye the remembraunce of theym from amonge men. ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the raylynge of theyr enemies, lest theyr aduersaries woulde be proude and saye: our hye hande hathe done all these worckes and not the Lorde. ²⁸ For it is a nation that hath an vnhappye forcast, and hath no vnderstanding in them: ²⁹ I would they were wyse and vnderstode thys & woulde consider their later ende. ³⁰ How it cometh that one shal chace a thousande, and two putt ten thousande of theym to flyght, excepte theyr rocke had solde them, and bicause the Lord had deliuered them. ³¹ For oure rocke is not as theyr rocke, no thoughe oure enemies be iudge. ³² But theyr vynes are of the vynes of Sodome, & of the feldes of Gomorra. Theyr grapes are grapes of gall, and theyr clusters be bitter. ³³ Theyr wyne is the poyson of dragons, and the cruel gall of aspes. ³⁴ Are not such thynges layed in store wyth me, and sealed vp among my treasures? ³⁵ Vengeaunce is mine, and I wyll reward: theyr fete shall slyde, when the tyme cometh. For the tyme of theyr destruccion is at hand, & the tyme that shal come vpon them maketh hast. ³⁶ For the Lorde wyll do iustice vnto hys people, & haue compassion on hys seruauntes For it shalbe sene that theyr power shall fayle, & at the last they shalbe prisoned & forsaken. ³⁷ And it shal be sayd, wher are their Gods and theyr rocke wherin they trusted? ³⁸ The fatt of whose sacrifices they ate and dranke the wyne of theyr drynkeofferinges, let them ryse vp and helpe you and be youre protection. ³⁹ Se nowe howe that I, I am he, and that there is no God but I. I can kyll and make a lyue, and what I haue smytten that I can heale: neyther is there that can deliuer anye man out of my hande. ⁴⁰ For I wyll lyfte vp myne hand to heauen, and wyl say: I lyue euer. ⁴¹ If I whett the edge of my swerd, & mine hand take in hand to do iustice, I wil shewe vengeaunce on myne enemyes & wyl reward them that hate me. ⁴² I wyl make myne arowes dronken with bloud, and my swerde shal eate fleshe of the bloude of the slayne & of the captyue and of the bare head of the enemy.

¹⁸ Wherfore the Lorde was excedyng wrothe with Israel & put them oute of hys sighte, that there was lefte but the trybe of Iuda onelye, ¹⁹ and therto Iuda kept not the commaundementes of the Lorde theyr God, but walked in the ordinaunces of Israel whiche they had made. ²⁰ Therfore the Lorde caste vp all the seed of Israell, and vexed them and delyuered them into the handes of spoylers, vntyll he had cast them oute of his syght. ²¹ And Israel deuyded them selues from the house of Dauid, and made Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat kynge. Which Ieroboam thruste Israel awaye from the Lorde, and made them synne a great synne. ²² And so the children of Israel walcked in al the synne of Ieroboam which he had set vp, and departed not therefrom, ²³ vntyll the Lorde had put Israel awaye oute of hys sighte, as he sayde by al his seruauntes the prophetes. And so he translated Israel oute of theyr lande to Assyrya, euen vnto this daye.

⁴ Alas for thys synfull people, whiche are ouerladen with blasphemyes, a frowarde generacyon, wicked chyldren. They haue forsaken the Lorde, they haue prouoked the holy one of Israell vnto anger, and are gone backwarde. ⁵ Wherfore shulde ye be plaged any more? For ye are euer fallyng away. The whole head is sick, & the herte is very heauy. ⁶ From the sole of the fote vnto the head, there is no whol parte in all youre bodye: but all are woundes, botches, sores, and stripes, whiche can nether be helped, bound vp, molifyed, nor eased with any oyntment.

⁵ Wherfore then is this people and Ierusalem gone to farre backe, that they turne not agayne. They are euer the longer the more obstynate, & wyl not be conuerted. ⁶ For I haue loked, & consydered: but there is no man that speaketh a good worde: there is no man that taketh repentaunce for hys synne, that wyll so muche as saye: wherfore haue I done thys? But euerye man (as sone as he is turned backe) runneth forth styl, lyke a wylde horse in a battayle. ⁷ The Storke knoweth hys appoynted tyme, the Turtledoue, the Swalowe & the Crane consydre the tyme of theyr trauayle: but my people wyll not know the tyme of the punyshmente of the Lorde. ⁸ Howe darre ye saye then: we are wyse, we haue the lawe of the Lorde amonge vs. Beholde, the disceytfull penne of the scrybes, setteth forth lyes: ⁹ therfore shall the wyse be confounded, they shalbe afrayed and taken: for lo, they haue caste oute the worde of the Lorde: what wysdom can then be among them? ¹⁰ Wherfore I will geue their wyues vnto aleauntes, and their feldes to destroyers. For from the loweste vnto the hyeste, they folowe all fylthy lucre: & from the Prophete vnto the prieste, they deale al with lyes.

²⁶ The Egypcians, the Iewes, the Edomytes, the Ammonytes, the Moabites, and the shauen Madyanites, that dwell in the wildernes. For all the Gentyles are vncyrcumcysed in the fleshe, but all the house of Israell are vncyrcumcysed in the herte.

²⁶ Thy priestes breake my lawe, and defyle my Sanctuarye. They put no dyfference betwene the holy and vnholy, nether discerne betwene the cleane and vncleane: they turne their eyes from my Sabbothes, & I am vnhalowed among them. ²⁷ Thy rulers in the ate like rauishing wolues, to shed bloude, and to destroye soules, for their owne couetous lucre. ²⁸ As for thy Prophetes, they dawbe wyth vntempered claye, they se vanytyes, and prophecye lyes vnto them, sayinge: the Lorde God sayeth so, where as the Lorde hathe not spoken. ²⁹ The people in the lande vseth wicked extorcyon and robbery. They vexe the poore and nedye and oppresse the straunger agaynste ryghte. ³⁰ And I soughte in the lande for a man, that woulde make vp the hedge, and set him selfe in the gappe before me in the landes behalfe, that I shoulde not vtterlye destroy it: but I coulde fynde none. ³¹ Therfore will I pour out my cruel displeasure vpon them, and burne them in the fyre in my wrath: their owne wayes will I recompence vpon their heades sayeth the Lorde God.

⁹ Geue therfore vnto thy seruaunt an vnderstandynge herte to iudge thy people, & to decerne betwene good, and bad. For who is able to iudge thys thy so waightye a people.

¹⁷ He caryeth awaye the wyse men, as it were a spoyle, and bringeth the iudges out of their wyttes.

¹⁰ Be wyse nowe therfore, O ye Kinges, be warned, ye that are iudges of the earthe.

² How long will ye geue wrong iudgement, and accept the personnes of the vngodly? Selah. ³ Defende the poore and fatherlesse, se that suche as be in nede & necessitie haue right.

¹¹ Kynges of the earth and all people, Prynces and iudges of the worlde.

¹⁶ Thorow me, lordes beare rule, and all iudges of the earth execute iudgement.

²⁶ But I set vp the purpose of my seruauntes, and fulfill the councell of my messaungers. I saye to Ierusalem: turne agayne: And to the cyties of Iuda, be ye buylded agayne: and I repayre their decayed places.

² Thus saieth the Lorde of Hostes the God of Israel: ye haue sene al the mysery that I haue brought vpon Ierusalem, and vpon al the cities of Iuda, so that this day they are desolate, & no man dwellinge therin: ³ and that because of the great blasphemyes, which they committed, to prouoke me vnto anger. In that they wente backe to do sacrifyce, and worshippe vnto straunge Goddes: whome neyther they, nor ye, nor youre fathers haue knowne. ⁴ How be it, I sent vnto them my seruauntes al the prophetes: I rose vp earlye, I sent vnto them, and gaue them warninge: O do no such abhominable thinges, & thinges that I hate. ⁵ But they woulde not folow nor herken, to turne from their wyckednes, and to do no more sacrifice vnto straung Goddes. ⁶ Wherfore myne indignacion and wrathe was kyndled, and it brente vp the cytyes of Iuda, the feldes with the stretes of Ierusalem, so that they were made waste and desolate as it is come to passe thys day.

¹² Lamed. O ye all that go fore by, beholde and se, yf there be eny sorow like vnto myne, wherwith the Lord hath troubled me, in the daye of his fearefull wrath.

¹³ Mem. What shall I saye of the, O thou daughter Ierusalem, to whom shall I lycken the? To whom shall I compare the, O thou daughter Sion, to conforte the with all? Thy hurte is lyke a many see, who maye heale the?

¹⁷ Phe The Lord hath fullfylled the thynge, that he was purposed to do: and perfourmed that he had dewysed longe a go: he hath destroyed and not spared. He hath caused thyne aduersary to triumphe ouer the, & set vp the horne of thyne enemye.

⁶ Dau. The synne of the daughter of my people is be come greater then the wyckednesse of Sodome, that sodenly was destroyed, & not taken with handes.

⁹ and wyll handle the of soch a fashion, as I neuer dyd before, and as I neuer will do from that tyme forth, and that because of all thyne abhominacyons.

⁶ Vayne thinges they se, & tel lyes, to maintayne their preachynges with al. The Lorde (saye they) hath spoken it, when in very dede the Lorde hath not sent them.

² a darcke daye, a gloomynge daye, a cloudye daye, yea & a stormy daye, lyke as the mornynge spredeth oute vpon the hylles: Namely, a great and myghtye people; suche as haue not bene sence the begynnynge, neither shal be after them for euer more.

² you only haue I accepted from all the generacyons of the earthe: therfore wyl I vyset you in all youre wickednesses.

⁶ But dyd not my wordes and statutes (which I commaunded by my seruauntes the prophetes) touche your forefathers? Vpon this, they gaue aunswere and sayde: lyke as the Lord of hostes deuysed to do vnto vs, accordynge to oure owne wayes & ymagynacyons, euen so hath he dealte wyth vs.

⁸ I sawe by nyght, and lo, there sate one vpon a read horse & stode styll amonge the Myrte trees, that were beneth vpon the grounde: and behynde hym were there reade, spekled, and whyt horses.

¹⁸ For truly I say vnto you, til heauen & earth perish, one iote or one title of the lawe shal not escape, til al be fulfilled

²¹ For then shalbe great trybulacion such as was not from the beginninge of the worlde to this tyme, nor shalbe:

¹⁹ For there shalbe in those dayes such trybulacyon, as was not from the beginning of creatures whiche God created, vnto thys time, neyther shalbe.

²² For these be the dayes of vengeaunce, to fulfil all that are written.

⁸ And I saye that Iesu Christ was a mynyster of the circumcysyon for the trueth of God is to confyrme the promyses made vnto the fathers.

⁴ & yet the Lord hath not geuen you an herte to perceyue, nor eyes to se, nor eares to heere vnto thys daye.

¹³ As for suche as be fayned, dissemblers and ypocrytes, they heape vp wrath for them selues: for they call not vpon him, though they be hys presoners.

⁴ Turne vs then. O God oure Sauyoure, and let thyne anger ceasse from vs.

¹⁸ Open thou myne eyes, and so shall I spy out wonderous thynges in thy lawe.

²⁷ Make me to vnderstand the waye of thy commaundementes, and so shall I talcke of thy wonderous workes.

⁷³ Iod. Thy hands haue made me and fashyoned me, O geue me vnderstandyng, that I may learne thy commaundementes.

¹³ For the people turneth not vnto hym, that chastyseth them, nether do they seke the Lorde of Hostes.

⁹ shewe yow these newe tydynges, and tell you them or they come, for olde thynges also are come to passe.

⁷ There is no man that calleth vpon thy name, that standeth vp to take hold by the. Therfore hydest thou thy face from vs, and consumest vs, because of oure synnes.

³⁰ It is but lost laboure, that I smyte youre children, for they receyue not my correccyon. Youre owne swearde destroyeth youre Prophetes, lyke a deuourynge lyon.

³ Where as thou (O Lorde) lokest only vpon faythe and truthe. Thou hast scourged them, but they toke no repentaunce: thou hast correcte them for amendement, but they refused thy correccion. They made their faces harder then a stone, and woulde not amende.

¹⁸ Moreouer I hearde Ephraim, that was led awaye captyue, complayne on thys maner: O Lorde, thou haste correcte me, and thy chastening haue I receyued, as an vntamed calfe. Conuerte thou me, and I shalbe conuerted, for thou arte my Lorde God:

²⁷ for I wil watch, to plage them, and not for their wealth. And al the men of Iuda that be in the lande of Egipte, shal perysh with the swerde and with honger, vntil they be vtterly destroyed.

¹⁵ Samech. All they that go by the, clappe their handes at the: hissynge and waggynge their heades vpon the daughter Ierusalem, and saye: is this the cytie that man call so fayre, wherin the whole lande reioyseth? ¹⁶ Ain. All thyne enemyes gape vpon the, whisperynge and bytynge their teth, sayinge: let vs deuoure, for the tyme that we loked for, is come: we haue founde and sene it. ¹⁷ Phe The Lord hath fullfylled the thynge, that he was purposed to do: and perfourmed that he had dewysed longe a go: he hath destroyed and not spared. He hath caused thyne aduersary to triumphe ouer the, & set vp the horne of thyne enemye.

²¹ O Lord, turne thou vs vnto the, and so shall we be turned. Renne our dayes as in olde tymes,

⁷ they are altogether as hote as an ouen. They haue deuoured their owne iudges, all their kinges are fallen: yet is there none of them that calleth vpon me.

¹⁰ and the pryd of Israell is caste doune before their fare, yet wil they not turne to the Lord their God, nor seke him for all this.

¹⁴ They call not vpon me with their hertes, but lye houlinge vpon their beddes. Where as they come together; it is but for meate and drincke, and me wil they not obeye.

⁴⁵ Then opened he their wittes, that they myght vnderstande the scriptures,

⁴⁵ It is written in the prophetes: that they shalbe al taught of God. Euery man therfore thath hath heard and hath learned of the father commeth vnto me.

³² and shal know the truth, and the truthe shall make you free.

³⁵ Yf he called them Goddes vnto whom the worde of God was spoken (& the scripture can not be broken)

¹⁷ that the God of oure Lord Iesus Christ, and the father of glorye myghte geue vnto you the spyryte of wysdome, and open to you the knoweledge of hym selfe, ¹⁸ and lyghten the eyes of youre myndes that ye myght knowe what that hope is, where vnto he hath called you, and what the ryches of hys gloryous inheritaunce is vpon the saynctes,

²¹ yf so be ye haue heard of hym, and are taughte of hym, euen as the trueth is in Iesu.

⁵ Yf anye of you lacke wysedome, let hym axe of God whiche geueth to all men indyfferentlye, and casteth no man in the teath: and it shal be geuen hym.

²⁸ Yea it shall come therto, that lyke as I haue gone about in tymes paste to rote them out, to scatre them, to breake them doune, to destroye them and chasten them: Euen so wyll I also go dylygentlye aboute, to buylde them vp agayne and to plante them, sayeth the Lorde.

¹ Then the Lord sayed vnto Moyses: Nowe shalte thou se what I wyll do vnto Pharao for wyth a myghtye hande shall he let them go, and wyth a myghty hande shal he dryue them out of his land.

⁶ Wherfore say vnto the chyldren of Israel I am the Lord, & wyll bryng you out frome vnder the burdens of the Egyptians, & wyl ryd you out of theyr bondage, and wil delyuer you with a stretched out arme and with great iudgements.

¹⁶ Yet in verye dede for this cause haue I sterred the vp, for to shewe my power in the and to declare my name thorow out al the worlde.

¹ Than the Lorde spake vnto Moses sayinge: ² byd the chyldren of Israel that they turne and pitch their tentes before the entrynge of Hiroth betwene Mygdole & the sea toward Baalzephon: euen before that shal ye pitch vpon the sea. ³ For Pharao wyll say of the children of Israel: they are tangled in the lande, the wyldernesse hath shut them in. ⁴ And I wyl harden his harte, that he shall folow after them, that I may get me honour vpon Pharao & vpon all his hoste, that the Egypcyans may knowe that I am the Lorde. And they dyd euen so. ⁵ And when it was tolde the kynge of Egypt that the people fled, than Pharaos harte and all hys seruauntes turned vnto the people & sayde: why haue we thys done that we haue let Israel goo out of oure seruice? ⁶ & he made ready hys charettes and toke hys people wt hym ⁷ and toke .vi. hundred chosen charettes & all the charettes of Egypte and captaynes vpon al hys people. ⁸ For the Lord hardened the harte of Pharao kynge of Egypt, that he folowed after the chyldren of Israel whyche for al that went oute thorow and hye hande ⁹ and the Egypcians folowed after them and ouertoke them where they pytched by the sea, wt all the horsses & charettes of Pharao & wt his horssemen & his hoste, euen fast by the entryng of Hiroth before Baall Zephon. ¹⁰ And Pharao drewe nye, & when the chyldren of Israel lyft vp their eyes & sawe howe the Egyptians folowed after them, they were sore a frayde & cryed out vnto the Lord. ¹¹ Than sayde they vnto Moses? were there no graues for vs in Egypte, but thou muste brynge vs awaye for to dye in the wyldernesse? wherfore hast thou serued vs thus, for to carye vs out of Egypte? ¹² Dyd not we tell the thys in Egypte sayinge, let vs be in rest & serue the Egypcians? For it had bene better for vs to haue serued the Egyptians, than for to dye in the wyldernesse. ¹³ And Moses sayde vnto the people: feare ye not but stonde styll and beholde howe the Lorde shall saue you thys daye: For as ye se the Egyptians thys daye, shall ye se them nomore for euer tyl the worldes ende. ¹⁴ The Lord shal fyghte for you and ye shal holde your peace. ¹⁵ The Lorde sayde vnto Moses: wherfore cryest thou vnto me? speake vnto the chyldren of Israel that they goo forwarde.

¹⁸ And the Egyptians shal know that I am the Lord whan I haue gotten me honour vpon Pharao vpon his charettes and vpon his horssemen.

¹¹ Then Moyses besoughte the Lorde hys God and sayde: O Lorde, why shoulde thy wrath waxe hote vpon thy people whiche thou hast brought out of the Lande of Egipt wt great power and with a mighty hande?

⁵¹ For they be thy people and thyne enherytaunce whiche thou broughtest oute of Egypte, from the fornace of yron.

¹⁰ They are thy seruauntes, & thy people whom thou haste delyuered thorowe thy greate power and myghtye hande.

¹⁰ & shewed tokens and wonders vpon Pharao, & on all hys seruauntes, and on al the people of his land: for thou knewest that they were presumptuous & cruell agaynst them, & so madest thou the a name as it is this daye.

⁸ Neuertheles, he helped them for hys names sake, that he myghte make hys power to be knowne.

¹³ For thornes, there shall growe. Fyrre trees, & the Myrre tre in the steade of breres. And thys shall be done to the prayse of the Lorde, and for an euerlasting token, that shall not be taken awaye.

¹⁰ I caused him also to make me a writtinge and to seale it, and called recorde therby, and weyed him there the money vpon the waightes.

²⁰ Thou hast done greate tokens and wonders in the lande of Egipt (as we se this daye) vpon the people of Israel, and vpon those men: to make thy name greate, as it is come to passe this daye. ²¹ Thou hast brought thy people Israell out of the land of Egipt, with tokens, wt wondres, with a mightye hande, with a stretched out arme, and with greate terriblenes: ²² & hast geuen them this lande, lyke as thou hast promysed vnto their fathers: Namely, that thou wouldest geue them a land, that floweth with mylcke and honye. ²³ Now when they came therin, and possessed it, they folowed not thy voyce, and walcked not in thy law: but all that thou commaundedest them to do, that haue they not done, & therfore come al these plages vpon them.

¹⁸ I wyll aryse, and go to my father, and will say vnto hym: father I haue synned agaynst heauen and before the, ¹⁹ and am no more worthye to be called thy sonne, make me as one of thy hyred seruauntes.

²¹ And the sonne sayed vnto him: father, I haue synned agaynst heauen in thy syghte, & am no more worthy to be called thy sonne.

¹³ And the Publicane stode a farre of, and woulde not lyft vp his eyes to heauen, but smote his brest, saiynge: God be mercifull to me a synner.

¹⁰ & which delyuered vs from so greate a death, and doth delyuer. On whom we truste that yet here after he will delyuer,

⁵ Se that thou neither bowe thy self vnto them neither serue them: for I the Lord thy God, am a gelouse God, & viset the synne of the fathers vppon the chyldren vnto the thyrd and fourth generacion of them that hate me:

³⁹ And they that are lefte of you, shall pyne away in theyr vnryghtuousnes, euen in their enymyes lande, and also in the misdedes of their fathers shall they consume. ⁴⁰ And they shall confesse theyr misdeades and the mysdeades of theyr fathers in theyr trespaces, which they haue trespaced agaynst me, & for that also that they haue walked contrary to me.

⁷ The Lorde maketh pore, and maketh ryche, bryngeth lowe, and heueth vp on hye.

⁷ then I wyll weede Israel oute of the lande whiche I haue geuen them. And this house which I haue halowed for my name, I wyll put out of my syghte, And Israell shall be a prouerbe and a fable vnto all nacyons. ⁸ And hys house which is so hye, al that passeth by it, shalbe astonyed, & shall hysse, & saye: why hath the Lord dealt on hys maner with this land & wyth thys house? ⁹ And it shalbe aunswered them, because they forsoke the Lord theyr God which broughte theyr fathers out of the lande of Egipt, & haue taken holde vpon other Goddes and haue stouped vnto hym, & serued them: therfore hath the Lord brought vpon them al thys euil.

⁸ & foundest hys herte faythfull before the, & madest a couenaunte wyth hym to geue vnto hys sede the lande of the Cananites, Hethites, Amorites, Pheresites, Iebusytes & Gergesytes, and haste made good thy wordes: for thou arte ryghteous,

¹ To the chaunter a Psalme of Dauyd. In the O lord, is my trust: let me neuer be put to confusyon, but delyuer me in thy rightuousnesse.

¹³ O blessed be the Lorde God of Israel, from hence forth and for euermore. Amen. Amen.

² but rydde me, and delyuer me thorow thy ryghtuousnesse: enclyne thyne eare vnto me, and helpe me.

⁴ We are become an open shame vnto oure enemyes, a verye scorne and derysyon vnto them that are rounde aboute vs.

¹ A Psalme and songe of the sonnes of Corah Her foundatyons are vpon the holye hylles: ² the Lorde loueth the gates of Syon more then all the dwellynges, of Iacob. ³ Very excellent thynges are spoken of the thou cyty of God. Selah.

⁶ We haue synned wyth oure fathers, we haue done amysse, we haue dealt wyckedlye. ⁷ Oure fathers regarded not thy wonders in Egypte, they kepte not thy great goodnes in remembraunce: but were dysobedyent at the sea, euen at the reed sea. ⁸ Neuertheles, he helped them for hys names sake, that he myghte make hys power to be knowne. ⁹ He rebuked the read sea, and it was dryed vp: so he led them thorowe the depe as in a wyldernes. ¹⁰ Thus he saued them from the hand of the hater, and delyuered them from the hande of the enemye. ¹¹ As for those that troubled them the waters ouerwhelmed them, ther was not one of them left. ¹² Then beleued they in his worde, and sang prayse vnto hym. ¹³ But within a whyle they forgat his workes, and wold not abyde his councel. ¹⁴ A lust came vpon them in the wildernesse, so that they tempted God in the deserte. ¹⁵ Yet he gaue them their desire, and sent them ynough at their wylles. ¹⁶ They angred Moyses in the tentes, & Aaron the saynct of the Lord. ¹⁷ So the earth opened & swalowed vp Dathan, & couered the congregatyon of Abyram. ¹⁸ The fyre was kyndled in their companie, the flamme brent vp the vngodly. ¹⁹ They made a calfe in Horeb, and worshipped the molten ymage. ²⁰ Thus they turned their glorye into the similitude of a calfe, that eateth hay. ²¹ They forgat God their Sauiour, whyche had done so greate thynges in Egypte. ²² Wonderous workes in the land of Ham and fearful thynges in the read sea. ²³ So he sayde he wuld haue destroyed them had not Moses hys chosen stand before him in that gappe: to turne awaye his wrathfull indignatyon, lest he should destroy them. ²⁴ Yea, they thought scorne of that pleasaunt lande, and gaue no credence vnto hys worde ²⁵ But murmured in their tentes, and herkened not vnto the voyce of the Lord. ²⁶ Then lyft he vp his hand against them to ouerthrowe them in the wildernes. ²⁷ To cast out their sede among the nacions. and to scatter them in the landes. ²⁸ They ioyned them selues vnto Baal Peor and eate the offeringes of the dead. ²⁹ Thus they prouoked him vnto anger with their owne inuencyons, and the plage was great among them. ³⁰ Then stode vp Phynehes and executed iustice, and so the plage ceased. ³¹ And that was counted vnto him for ryghtuousnesse, amonge all posterityes for euermore. ³² They angeryd hym also at the waters of strife, so that Moyses was punished for ther sakes. ³³ Because they prouoked his spirite, and he told them plainly with his lippes. ³⁴ Nether destroied they the Heathen, as the Lorde commaunded them. ³⁵ But were mingled among the Heathen, and lerned their workes. ³⁶ In so much that they worshipped their images, which turned to their owne decay. ³⁷ Yea they offred their sons and their daughters vnto deuels. ³⁸ And shed the innocent bloud of their sonnes and of their daughters, whom they offered vnto the ymages of Canaan, so that the land was defiled with bloud. ³⁹ Thus were they stayned with their owne workes, and went a whoring with their owne inuencyons. ⁴⁰ Therfore was the wrath of the Lord kindled agaynst hys people, in so much that he abhorred his owne enheritaunce. ⁴¹ And gaue them ouer into the hand of the Heathen, and they that hated them, were lordes ouer them. ⁴² Their enemyes oppressed them, and had them in subieccion. ⁴³ Many a tyme did he delyuer them but they prouoked him wyth theyr owne inuencyons and were broughte downe for theyr wyckednesse. ⁴⁴ Neuertheles when he saw their aduersitie he herd their complaynt. ⁴⁵ He thought vpon hys couenaunt, and pytyed them, accordyng vnto the multytude of hys mercyes. ⁴⁶ Yea he made all those that had led them awaye captyue, to pitiye them. ⁴⁷ Delyuer vs, O Lorde oure God, and gather vs from amonge the Heathen: that we maye geue thanckes to thy holye name, and make our boast of thy prayse. ⁴⁸ Blessed be the Lorde God of Israel from euerlastyng and world without ende, and let all people saye: Amen, Amen. Prayse the euerlastynge.

⁹ Be not to sore displeased (O Lorde) and kepe not our offences to longe in thy remembraunce, but considre that we are all thy people. ¹⁰ The cytyes of thy Sanctuary lye waste, Sion is a wildernesse, and Ierusalem a deserte. ¹¹ Oure holy house whiche is oure bewty, where oure fathers praysed the, is brent vp: yea all oure commodities & pleasures are wasted awaye.

¹⁸ And I wyll persecute them wyth the swearde, with honger and death. I wyll delyuer them vp to be vexed of all Kyngedomes, to be cursed, abhorred, laughed to scorne, and put to confusyon of all the people, amonge whome I haue scatred them:

³² because of the great blasphemies of the chyldren of Israell, and Iuda, whiche they haue done to prouoke me: yea, they, their kynges, their princes, their priestes their prophetes, whole Iuda, and al the cytesins of Ierusalem.

⁸ Heth. Ierusalem synned euer more & more, therfore is she come in decaye. All they that had her in honour, despyse her: for they haue sene her fylthynesse. Yee she sygheth, and is a shamed of her selfe. ⁹ Teth. Her skyrtes are defyled, she remembred not what wolde folowe: therfore is her fall so greate, and there is no man to comforte her. O Lord, consydre my trouble, for myne enemye hath the vpperhande.

¹⁵ Samech. All they that go by the, clappe their handes at the: hissynge and waggynge their heades vpon the daughter Ierusalem, and saye: is this the cytie that man call so fayre, wherin the whole lande reioyseth? ¹⁶ Ain. All thyne enemyes gape vpon the, whisperynge and bytynge their teth, sayinge: let vs deuoure, for the tyme that we loked for, is come: we haue founde and sene it.

¹⁴ Moreouer I wyll make the waste and abhorred, befor all the Heathen that dwell aboute the, & in the syght of all them, that go by the:

²⁰ As I was yet speakinge at my prayers, knoweledginge myne owne sinnes, and the synnes of my people, makinge so mine intercession before the Lorde my God, for the holye hils sake of my God:

¹⁷ Thus shall ye knowe, that I the Lorde youre God dwell vpon my holy mounte of Syon. Then shall Ierusalem be holy, and there shall no straungers go thorowe her any more.

⁴ Because I brought the from the lande of Egypte, and delyuered the out of the house of bondage? Because I made Moses, Aaron and Miriam to lede the? ⁵ Remembre (O my people) what Balach the kyng of Moab had Imagyned agaynst the, and what answeree that Balaam the sonne of Beor gaue hym, from Sethim vnto Galgal, that ye maye know the louyng kyndnesses of the Lorde.

³ thus sayeth the Lord of hostes: I wil turne me agayne vnto Syon & wil dwell in the middest of Ierusalem: so that Ierusalem shalbe called a faythfull, and true cytie, the hyll of the Lorde of hostes, yea an holy hill.

³¹ So then ye be witnesses to your selues, that ye are the chyldren of them whyche kylled the Prophetes. ³² Fulfil ye likewyse the measure of your fathers.

⁴⁷ Wo be to you: ye buylde the sepulchres of of the Prophetes, and youre fathers kylled them, ⁴⁸ truelye ye beare witnes, that ye alowe the deedes of youre fathers: for they kylled them, and ye buylde theyr sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therfore sayde the wysdome of God: I wyll send them Prophetes and Apostles, and of them they shall slea and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the bloude of all Prophetes which was shede from the beginnynge of the worlde, maye be requyred of thys generacion ⁵¹ from the bloude of Abell vnto the bloude of Zacharye, whiche peryshed betwene the aulter and the temple. Verelye I saye vnto you, it shalbe requyred of thys nacyon.

⁶ It is verely a ryghteous thing with God to recompence trybulacyon to them that trouble you:

⁹ If we knowledge oure sinnes, he is faythfull and iust, to forgeue vs our sinnes, and to clense vs from al vnrightuousnes.

²³ speake vnto Aaron and hys sonnes sayinge: of thys wyse ye shal blesse the chyldren of Israel saying vnto them: ²⁴ The Lord blesse the and kepe the. ²⁵ The Lord make his face shyne vpon the and be mercyfull vnto the. ²⁶ The Lord lyfte vp his countenaunce vpon the, and geue the peace.

⁶ There be many that saye: who wyll do vs any good? Lord lift vp vpon vs the lyghte of thy countenaunce.

¹³⁵ Shewe the light of thy countenaunce vnto thy seruaunt, and learne me thy statutes.

¹⁸ because of the hyll of Syon that is destroyed. In so moch, that the foxes runne vpon it.

¹⁹ O Lorde, heare. O forgeue Lorde. O Lorde consydre, tarye not ouer longe: but for thyne owne sake do it. O my God: for the citie and thy people is called after thy name.

²⁴ Hytherto haue ye axed nothyng in my name. Axe and ye shall receyue it, that your ioye maye be full.

²⁰ For all the promyses of God, in him are yea, and are in him Amen, vnto the lande of God thorow vs.

²³ & the cytye hath no nede of the sunne neyther of the mone to lyghten it. For the bryghtnes of God dyd lyght it, & the lambe was the lyght of it.

⁷ Then the Lorde sayed: I haue surelye sene the trouble of mi people which ar in Egipt, and haue heard their cry whyche they haue of their taskemasters. For I know theyr sorow,

²⁹ that thine eyes maye be open vpon thys house nyght & daye, & vpon the place, of whiche thou haste sayde, my name shalbe there: that thou herken vnto the prayer which thy seruaunt shal pray in thys place.

¹⁶ Lord bowe thine eares and heare: Open Lorde thyne eyes and se: and heare the wordes of Sennaherib, which had sent to raile on the lyuynge God.

⁶ For vnto the I crie: heare me O God: encline thine eares to me: & herken vnto my woordes. ⁷ Shewe thy maruelous louing kindnesse, thou that sauest them whiche put their trust in the, from suche as resist thy right hande.

¹⁴ Turne the agayne, thou God of hoostes, loke doune from heauen, beholde and vyset this vyneyarde. ¹⁵ Maynteyne it, that thy rightehande hath planted, and the sonne whom thou madest so muche of for thy self. ¹⁶ For why? it is brent with fyre, and lyeth waste: O let them peryshe at the rebuke of thy wrath. ¹⁷ Let thy hande be vpon the man of thy right hande, and vpon the man whome thou madest so much of for thyne owne selfe. ¹⁸ And so will not we go back from the: Oh let vs lyue, & we shall call vpon thy name. ¹⁹ Turne vs agayne, O Lorde God of hoostes, shewe the light of thy countenaunce, & we shalbe whole.

¹⁷ Enclyne thyne eare Lord & consydre, open thyne eyes, O Lorde, & se, & pondre all the wordes of Sennaherib, whiche hath sent hys embage to blaspheme the lyuynge God.

¹⁵ Loke doune then from heauen, and beholde the dwellinge place of thy sanctuary and thy glory: how is it, that they gelousy, thy strength the multitude of thy mercyes, & thy louynge kindnesse, will not be entreated of vs. ¹⁶ Yet art thou oure father: For Abraham knoweth vs not, neither is Israel acquainted with vs. But thou Lorde art oure father and redemer and thy name is euerlastinge. ¹⁷ O Lord wherfore hast thou led vs out of thy waye? wherfore hast thou hardened our hertes, that we feare the not? Be at one with vs agayne, for thy seruauntes sake that are of the generacion of thine heretage. ¹⁸ Thy people hath had but litle of thy Sanctuarye in possession, for oure enemies haue taken it in. ¹⁹ And we are become euen as we were from the beginninge: but thou art not their Lorde, for they haue not called vpon thy name.

⁶ We are al as vncleane thinge, and all oure ryghteousnesses are as the clothes defyled with the floures of a woman: we fall euerychone as the leafe, for oure synnes carye vs awaie like the winde.

¹² Wylt thou not be intreated (Lorde) for all this? Wylt thou holde thy peace, and scourge vs so sore?

¹⁰ Then come ye, and stande before me in thys house, whiche hath my name geuen vnto it and say: Tush, we are absolued quite, though we haue done all these abhominacions. ¹¹ What? thincke you thys house that beareth my name, is a denne of theues? And these thinges are not done priuelye, but before myne eyes sayeth the Lorde. ¹² Go to my place in Silah, wherevnto I gaue my name afore tyme, & loke wel what I did to the same place for the wyckednes of my people of Israell.

⁹ Why wilt thou make thy self a cowarde, and as it were a gyaunte that yet maye not helpe? For thou art ours (O Lorde) and we beare thy name, therfore forsake vs not.

¹⁶ When I had found thy wordes, I ate them vp gredely: they haue made my herte ioyfull & glad. For I call vpon thy name, O Lorde God of Hostes.

²⁹ For lo, I begynne to plage the cyty, that my name is geuen vnto: thynke ye then, that I will leaue you vnpunyshed? Ye shal not go quyte. For why, I call for a swearde vpon al the inhabitours of the earth, sayeth the Lord of Hostes.

⁷ Peraduenture they will praye mekely before the face of the Lord, and turne euery one from his wicked waie. For greate is the wrath and displeasure, that the Lorde hath taken agaynst this people.

²⁰ And therfore heare now, O my Lord the Kinge: let my prayer be accepte before the and sende me no more into the house of Ionathas the Scrybe, that I dye not there.

³² But I wyll not do this for youre sakes (sayeth the Lorde God) be ye sure of it. Therfore, O ye house of Israell, be ashamed of your synnes.

² Vnto the congregacyon of GOD whiche is at Corinthum. To them that are sanctifyed in Christ Iesu, saynctes by callyng with al that call on the name of oure Lorde Iesus Christe in euerye place, bothe of theyrs and of oures.

¹⁹ be mercyfull I beseche the therfore vnto the synne of thys people according vnto thy greate mercy, and accordyng as thou hast forgeuen thys people from Egypt euen vnto thys place.

³⁰ And herken vnto the supplicacyon of thy seruaunte and of thy people Israel whiche they shall praye in thys place. And heare thou vp vnto heauen thy dwellynge place, and when thou heareste, haue mercye. ³¹ And yf any man trespace agaynst hys neyghboure, and hys neyghboure take an adiuracyon to adiure hym with all, and the adiuarcyon come before thyne aultare at thys house, ³² then herken thou vp to heauen, & worke and iudge thy seruauntes, that thou condempne the wicked to brynge hys waye vpon hys heade, & iustifye the ryghteous to geue hym accordynge to hys ryghteousnesse. ³³ When thy people Israel be put to the worsse before theyr enemyes, because they haue synned agaynste the & afterwarde turne agayne to the, & prayse thy name, & praye, and make supplicacion vnto the in thys house: ³⁴ then heare thou vp to heauen, and be mercyfull vnto the synne of thy people Israel, and brynge them agayne vnto the lande whiche thou gauest vnto theyr fathers. ³⁵ Yf heauen be shut vp, that there be no rayne, because they haue synned against the: yet yf they praye in thys place, and prayse thy name, and turne from theyr synnes, thorowe thy skourgynge of them: ³⁶ then heare thou vp to heauen, and be mercyfull vnto the synne of thy seruauntes & of thy people Israel, that thou shewe them a good waye to walke in, & geue raygne vpon thy lande that thou haste geuen vnto thy people to enheret. ³⁷ If there chaunce death in the lande, pestylence, blastynge, or wytheryng of corne, or that the frutes be deuoured of Grashoppers or Caterpyllers, or yf theyr enemyes besege them in the lande & in theyr owne cytyes, or whatsoeuer plage or sycknesse chaunce: ³⁸ then heare thou vp to heauen thy dwelling place, all the prayers and supplicacyons that shalbe made of all men thorowout all thy people Israel, which shal knoweledge euery man the plage of hys owne herte, and stretche forth hys handes vnto thys house, ³⁹ and be mercyfull, and worcke, and geue euery man according to his wayes (euen as thou onelye knowest euerye mannes herte, for thou knowest the hertes of all the children of Adam)

²¹ herken therfore vnto the prayers of thy seruaunt & of thy peole Israel, whiche they praye in thys place. But heare thou it oute of thy dwellyng place heauen: & when thou hearest it be mercyfull.

²⁵ then heare thou from heauen and be mercyful vnto the synne of thy people Israel, and brynge them agayne vnto the lande which thou gauest to them and to theyr fathers. ²⁶ If heauen be shut vp, that there be no raine, because they haue synned agaynste the: yet yf they praye at thys place, and confesse thy name and turne from theyr synnes at thy scourgynge: ²⁷ then heare thou from heauen, and be mercyfull vnto the synne of thy seruauntes, & of thy people Israel, that thou shewe them a good waye to walke in, and sende rayne vpon thy lande whiche thou haste geuen vnto thy people, for an enherytaunce. ²⁸ If there chaunce darthe in the lande, pestilence, burnynge or smytynge of corne, grashoppers or caterpyllers, or that theyr enemies besege them in the cytyes of theyr owne land, or what soeuer plage or syckenesse it be. ²⁹ Then all the supplicacyons and prayers that shalbe made of all men amonge all thy people Israell, whiche shall knowe euery man his owne sore and hys owne greffe, & shal stretche oute theyr handes towarde thys house: ³⁰ thou shalte heare from heauen thy dwellyng place and shalte be mercyfull, and geue euery man accordynge vnto all hys waye, euen as thou shalte knowe euery mannes herte: for thou onelye knoweste the hertes of the chyldren of Adam:

³⁹ Then heare from heauen thy dwellyng place, their supplicacyon & prayers & iudge theyr cause, and be mercifull vnto thy people, though they haue synned against the.

²³ Vp Lorde, why slepest thou? wake, and cast vs not of for euer. ²⁴ Wherfore hydest thy face? wylte thou cleane forget oure mysery and oppression ²⁵ For oure soule is brought low euen vnto the dust, and our bely cleueth vnto the ground ²⁶ Arise O Lord, helpe vs and delyuer vs for thy mercy sake.

⁹ We se oure tokens no more, there is not one Prophet more, no not one that vnderstandeth any more. ¹⁰ O God, how long shall the aduersary do this dishonoure? how longe shall the enemy blaspheme thy name? for euer? ¹¹ Why withdrawest thou thine hand? why pluckest thou not thy right hande out of thy bosome, to consume thyne enemyes?

⁵ Lorde, howe longe wylt thou be angrye? shall thy ielousy burne lyke fyre for euer? ⁶ Poure oute thyne indignacyon vpon the Heathen that knowe the not, and vpon the Kyngdomes that call not vpon thy name.

⁸ O remembre not oure olde synnes, but haue mercye vpon vs, and that soone, for we are come to greate mysery. ⁹ Helpe, vs, O God oure sauyoure, for the glory of thy name: O deliuer vs, and forgeue vs oure synnes for thy names sake. ¹⁰ Wherfore shall the Heathen say: wher is now their God? O lette the vengeaunce of thy seruauntes bloude that is shed, be openly shewed vpon the Heathen in our syght.

⁵ Wylt thou be dyspleased at vs for euer? wylt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generacyon to another? ⁶ Wylt thou not turne agayne and quycken vs, that thy people maye reioyse in the?

¹³ Aryse therfore & haue mercy vpon Sion, for it is time to haue mercy vpon her, yea, the tyme is come. ¹⁴ And why? thy seruauntes haue a loue too her stones, and it pitieth them to se her in the dust. ¹⁵ The Heathen shal feare thy name, O Lord, and all the kynges of the earth thy maiesty. ¹⁶ For the Lorde shall buylde vp Sion, and shall apeare in hys glory.

¹ Not vnto vs, O Lorde not vnto vs. but vnto thy name geue the praise for thy louing mercye & faythfulnesse. ² Wherfore shal the Heathen say wher is now their God?

⁹ But I woulde not do it, for my names sake, that it shoulde not be vnhalowed before the Heathen, amonge whom they dwelt, and among whom I shewed my selfe vnto them, that it woulde brynge them out of the lande of Egipte.

¹⁴ Yet I would not do it, for my names sake: lest it shoulde be dishonoured before the Heathen, from the which I had caried them away.

²² Neuerthelesse I wythdrewe my hande for my names sake, least it shoulde be vnhalowed amonge the Heathen, before whome I had brought them forth.

²² Therfore tell the house of Israell: Thus sayeth the Lord God: I do not this for youre sakes (O house of Israell) but for my holye names sake, whyche ye dyshonoured amonge the Heathen, when ye came to them.

²⁵ Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde God: Now wyll I brynge agayne the captiues of Iacob and haue mercy vpon the whole house of Israell, and be gelous for my holy names sake.

¹⁸ O my God, enclyne thine eare, and herken (at the leaste for thine owne sake) open thyne eyes: beholde, how we be desolated, yea and the cytye also, whiche is called after thy name: for we do not cast oure prayers before the in oure owne righteousnesse, no: but onely in thy greate mercyes.

² Nowe when they vndertoke to eat vp all the greue thynges in the lande, I sayd: O Lorde God, be mercyfull, I beseche the: who shuld els help vp Iacob, that is brought so lowe?

⁸ I saye vnto you, thoughe he woulde not arise and geue him, because he is hys frende: yet because of hys importunitie he wold ryse, and geue him as many as he neded.

⁶ to the prayse of the glory of hys grace, wherewith he hath made vs accepted in the beloued.

¹² that we whiche before beleued in Christ shoulde be vnto the prayse of hys glorye.

¹⁰ to the entente, that nowe vnto the rulers & powers in heauen myght be knowen (by the congregation) the manifolde wysedome of God,

⁵ If I forget the, O Ierusalem, let my right hande be forgotten. ⁶ If I do not remember the, lette my tonge cleue to the rofe of my mouth: yea, if I preferre not Ierusalem in my myrth.

¹⁸ The Lord is nye vnto them that call vpon him, yea, al such as call vpon hym faithfully.

²⁰ for there is not one iuste vpon earth, that doth good, and synneth not.

⁵ Then I sayde: O wo is me. For I was astonished: that I (which am a man of vncleane lippes and dwell amonge people that hath vncleane lyppes also) shulde se the kynge and the Lorde of hostes wyth myne eyes.

⁷ Then wyll I brynge to my holye mountayne, and make them ioyfull in my house of prayer. Their burnt offeringes & sacryfyces shalbe accepted vpon mine aulter, for my house shalbe an house of prayer for all people.

⁹ Then yf thou callest, the Lorde shall answere the: yf thou cryest, he shall saye: here I am. Yea, yf thou layest awaie thy burthens, and holdest thy fingers, and ceasest from blasphemous talkinge,

⁶ I wyll set watchmen vpon thy walles (O Ierusalem) whiche shall neyther ceasse daye nor night to preache the Lorde. And ye also shal not kepe him close, ⁷ nor leaue to speake of him, vntill Ierusalem be set vp, & made the prayse of the worlde.

²⁴ And it shalbe, that or euer they call, I shall answere them. While they are yet but thinckinge howe to speake. I shal heare them.

³ and I turned me vnto god the Lorde, for to praye and make myne intercession, with fastinge, sackcloth & ashes, ⁴ I prayed before the Lorde my God, and knowledged, sayinge: O Lorde, thou greate and fearfull God, thou that kepest couenaunt and mercye wyth them, whiche loue the, and do thy commaundementes.

¹⁶ O Lorde, and done wyckedly agaynste all thy ryghteousnes: yet let thy wrothfull displeasure be turned awaye (I beseche the) from thy cytye Ierusalem thy holy hill. And why? for oure synnes sake, and for the wickednesse of oure forefathers is Ierusalem and thy people abhorred, of all them that are aboute vs.

² At the same time I Daniel mourned for the space of thre weakes,

³¹ And assone as they had prayed, the place moued where they were assembled together, and they were all filled with the holy ghoste, and they spake the worde of God boldlye.

³⁰ And Cornelius sayde: Thys daye nowe .iiij. dayes I fasted and at the nynthe houre I prayde in my house: and beholde, a man stode before me in brighte clothinge, ³¹ and sayd: Cornelius, thy prayer is hearde, and thine almes deades are had in remembraunce in the sight of God.

²³ for al haue sinned, and lacke the prayse that is of valoure before God,

² for in many thinges we synne all. Yf a man synne not in worde, the same is a perfect man and able to tame al the bodye.

² And I Iohn saw that holye cyty new Ierusalem come doune from God out of heauen prepared as a bryd garnyshed for her husband

¹⁰ And he caryed me away in the spirite to a great & hygh mountayne, & he shewed me the great citie, holy Ierusalem, descendyng out of heauen from God,

³⁹ the one thou shalte offer in the mornynge and the other at euen.

³⁶ And when offeringe time was come, Eliah the prophete went to and sayde: Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and of Israel, let it be knowen thys daye, that thou art the God in Israel, and that I am thy seruaunt, and that I do al these thinges at thy commaundement.

⁴ And there resorted vnto me all such as feared the worde of the Lorde God of Israell because of the greate transgression. And I sate mournynge vntyll the euenynge sacryfyce. ⁵ And aboute the euenynge sacryfyce I rose vp from my heauynes, & rente my clothes & my rayment, and fel vpon my knees, and spred out my handes vnto the Lorde my God,

²⁰ O prayse the Lorde ye aungels of his, ye that be myghty in strength fulfyllynge hys commaundement that men may here the voice of hys wordes.

⁴ Thou makest thyne aungels sprites, and thy ministers flammes of fyre.

² From aboue flakred the Seraphins, whereof euery one had sixe wynges. With twayne eche couered his face, with twayne his fete, & with twayne dyd he flye.

⁶ Then flue one of the Seraphins vnto me, hauynge a hote cole in hys hande, whiche he had taken from the aulter wyth the tounges, ⁷ and touched my mouthe, and sayde: lo, thys hath touched my mouth, and thyne vnryghtuousnes is taken awaye, and thy synne forgeuen.

¹¹ Their faces also and their wynges were spred out aboue: so that two winges of one touched euer two wynges of of another, and wyth the other they couered their body.

¹⁴ When the beastes wente forwarde and backwarde, one wolde haue thought it had lyghtened.

¹⁶ and I hearde a mans voyce in the ryuer of Vlai, which cryed and sayd: O Gabriel, make this man vnderstande the vysion.

¹⁸ Nowe as he was speakynge vnto me, I waxed faynte, so that I suncke doune to the ground. But he toke hold vpon me, and set me vp agayne,

¹⁰ And beholde, an hande touched me, whyche set me vpon my knees, and vpon the palmes of my handes,

¹⁶ Beholde, there touched my lippes one very lyke vnto a man. Then opened I my mouthe, & sayde vnto him, that stode before me: O my Lorde, my pointes are lowsed in the vision, and there is no more strength within me:

¹⁸ Vpon this there touched me agayne, one muche lyke a man, and comforted me,

⁴⁶ And aboute the ninthe houre Iesus cryed with a loude voice sayinge: Eli Eli lama sabathani. That is to saye, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

¹⁹ And the aungell aunswered and sayed vnto hym. I am Gabryel that stande in the presence of God, and am sente to speake to the: & shewe the these glad tidinges.

¹ Peter and Iohn wente vp together into the temple at the nynth houre of prayer.

³ The same man saw in a vision euydently aboute the ninth houre of the daye, an aungel of God commyng in to hym, and saiyng vnto him: Cornelius.

⁹ On the morow as they wente on theyr iourneye, and drewe nye vnto the cytie, Peter wente vp into the toppe of the house to praye about the .vi. houre.

⁷ And beholde the aungell of the lorde was there presente, and a light shyned in the lodge. And he smote Peter on the syde, and stered hym vp, saiyng: aryse vp quickly. And hys chaynes fell of from hys handes.

⁷ And of the Angels he sayth: He maketh his Angels spyrytes, and hys mynysters flammes of fyre.

¹⁴ Are they not al ministringe spirites, sent to minister for their sakes, whiche shal be heyres of saluation?

²⁴ .Lxx. weakes are determed ouer thy people, and ouer the holy citie: that the wickednesse maye be consumed, that the sinne maye haue an ende, that the offence may be reconcyled, and to bringe in euerlastinge righteousnesse, to fulfill the visions and the Prophetes, and to annoynte the most holy one. ²⁵ Vnderstande this then, and marcke it well, that from the tyme it shalbe concluded, to go and repayre Ierusalem againe, vnto Christ (or the annointed) prince: there shalbe seuen weakes. Then shal the stretes and walles be buylded again .lxij. weakes, but wyth harde troublous time. ²⁶ After these .lxii. weakes shall Christ be slaine and they shall haue no pleasure in hym. Then shall there come a people with the Prince, and destroye the cytie and the Sanctuarye: & his ende shall come as the water floude. But the desolacion shall continue till the ende of the battell. ²⁷ He shall make a stronge bonde with many, for the space of a weke: and when the weke is halfe gone, he shall put doune the slayne and meateofferinge. And in the temple there shalbe an abhominable desolacion, till it haue destroyed all. And it is concluded, that thys wasting shall continue vnto the ende.

²¹ Neuertheles I will shew the the thinge, that is fast noted in the scripture of truethe. And as for all yonder matters, there is none that helpeth me in them, but Michael youre prynce.

⁹ Then sayde I: O my Lorde, what are these? And the aungell that talcked with me, sayde vnto me: I wyll shewe the, what these be.

¹⁴ And the aungel that commoned with me, sayde vnto me: Crye thou, and speake: Thus sayeth the Lorde of hostes: I am exceadynge gelous ouer Ierusalem and Syon,

⁴ Then spake I, and sayde vnto the angel that talcked with me: O Lorde, what are these? ⁵ The Aungell aunswered, and sayde vnto me: These are the .iiij. wyndes of the heauen, whiche be come forthe to stand before the ruler of al the earth.

¹ After thys I loked, and beholde a dore was open in heauen, and the fyrst voyce which I hearde, was as it were of a trompete, talkynge wyth me which sayd: come vp hether, and I wyll shewe the thynges, whyche must be fulfylled herafter.

¹⁰ There wyll I turne me vnto my loue, and he shall turne hym vnto me.

¹⁶ Thou sonne of man, beholde I wil take awaye the pleasure of thyne eyes with a plage: yet shalt thou neyther mourne, nor wepe, nor water thy chekes therfore:

¹² They shal wast awaye thy riches, and spoile thy marchaundyse. Thy walles shall they breake doune, and destroy thy houses of pleasure. Thy stones, thy timbre and foundacions shal they cast in the water.

¹¹ sayinge vnto me: O Daniel, thou well beloued man: take good hede of the wordes, that I shal say vnto the, and stande ryght, for vnto the am I now sent. And when he had sayde these wordes, I stode vp tremblinge. ¹² Then he sayd vnto me: feare not Daniel: for why sence the fyrst day that thou set thyne herte to vnderstande, and diddest chasten thy selfe before thy God: thy wordes haue bene hearde. And I had come vnto the, when thou begannest to speake

¹⁹ saying: O thou man so well beloued feare not: be content, take a good herte vnto the, & be strong. So when he had spoken vnto me, I recouered and sayd: Speake on my Lorde, for thou haste refreshed me.

²⁸ And the aungel wente in vnto her, & sayde Hayle full of grace, the Lorde is with the: blessed art thou amonge women.

¹⁵ And when it was slaine, Moses toke of the bloude and put it vpon the hornes of the alter round aboute wt hys finger, & purified it, & poured the bloud vnto the botome of the alter, & sanctified it & reconciled it.

⁸ Then numbre seuen wekes of yeres, that is, seuen tymes seuen yere: and the space of the seuen wekes of yeres, wil be vnto the .xlix. yere.

³⁴ after the nombre of the daies in which ye serched out the land .xl. daies, & euery daye a yere: so that they shall beare your vnryghteousnes .xl. yere, & ye shal fele my vengeaunce

²⁴ And the preastes slue them & offered the bloude of them vpon the aulter, to make satisfacion for all Israel: for the kynge sayde: that the burntofferynge & the synneoffryng shoulde serue for al Israel.

⁶ Yet haue I sette my kyng vpon my holy hyll of syon.

⁷ Thou hast loued righteousnesse, & hated iniquitie: wherfore God (which is thy God) hath anoynted the with the oyle of gladnes aboue thy felowes.

⁶ Lyfte vp youre eyes towarde heauen, & loke vpon the earthe beneth. For the heauens shall vanyshe awaye lyke smoke, & the earthe shall teare lyke a clothe, & they that dwell therein, shall peryshe in lyke maner. But my healthe endureth for euer, & my ryghtuousnes shall not cease.

⁸ for wormes and mothes shal eate them vp lyke cloth and wol. But my ryghtuousnesse shall endure for euer, & my sauinge health from generacion to generacyon,

¹⁰ Yet hath it pleased the Lorde to smyte him with infirmite, that when he had made hys soule an offerynge for synne, he myght se longe lasting sede. And this deuyce of the Lord shall prospere in hys hande. ¹¹ Wyth trauayle and laboure of hys soule, shall he obtayne great ryches. My ryghtuous seruaunte shall wyth hys wysdome iustifye & delyuer the multitude, for he shal beare away theyr synnes,

¹ Thus sayth the Lord Kepe equite, and do ryght, for my sauing health shal come shortly, & my righteousnes shalbe opened.

¹ The spirite of the Lorde God is with me, for the Lorde hath annointed me, & sent me, to preache good tydinges vnto the poore, that I myght binde vp the wounded hertes, that I myght preach delyueraunce to the captyue, and open the preson to them that are bounde:

⁵ Beholde, the tyme commeth, sayeth the Lorde, that I will rayse vp the ryghtuous braunche of Dauid, which shall beare rule, and discusse matters wyth wysdome, & shall sett vp equyte & rightuousnes agayne in the earth. ⁶ In hys tyme shall Iuda be saued and Israell shall dwell without feare. And thys is the name that they shall call hym: euen the Lorde oure ryghtuous maker.

²² Thau. Thy sinne is well punished (O thou daughter Sion) he shall not suffre the to be caryed awaye eny more. But thy wyckednesse (O daughter Edom) shall he vyset, and for thy synnes sake, he shall lede the in to captiuite.

⁶ When thou hast fulfylled these dayes lye downe agayne, and slepe vpon thy right syde .xl. dayes, and beare the synnes of the house of Iuda. A daye for a yeare, a daye (I saye) for a yeare, wyll I euer laye vpon the.

¹² Thou sonne of man, make a lamentable complaynte ouer the kynge of Tyre, and tell hym: Thus sayth the Lorde God: Thou arte a seale of a lykenesse, full of wysdome & excellente beutye.

²¹ She shall bryngforth a sonne, & thou shalt cal his name Iesus. For he shal saue his people from their sins.

¹³ For all the prophetes and the lawe prophecyed vnto the tyme of Iohn.

²⁴ saiyng: let be: what haue we to do with the thou Iesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy vs, I knowe the what thou arte, euen the holye of God.

³⁵ And the aungell aunswered and sayd vnto her: The holye ghoste shall come vnto the, and the power of the hyest shall ouer shadowe the. Therfore also that holye thynge whiche shall be borne shalbe called the sonne of God.

¹⁸ The spyryte of the Lorde vpon me, because he hath anointed me: to preache the gospell to the poore he hath sent me, and to heale the broken herted, to preache deliueraunce to the captiue, and syght to the blynde, and frely to set at lyberte them that are brused, ¹⁹ and to preache the acceptable yeare of the Lorde. ²⁰ And he closed the boke, and gaue it againe to the mynister, and sate doune. And the eyes of all that were in the synagoge were fastened on him. ²¹ And he began to saye vnto them. This daye is this scripture fulfylled in youre eares.

²⁵ And he sayed vnto them: O fooles and slowe of hert to beleue all that the Prophetes haue spoken. ²⁶ Ought not Christ to haue suffred these thinges and to enter into his glorye? ²⁷ And he began at Moyses, and at all the Prophetes, & interpreted vnto them in all scryptures, which were written of hym.

⁴⁴ And he sayde vnto them: These are the wordes which I spake vnto you, whyle I was yet with you: that al muste be fulfilled which was written of me in lawe of Moyses and in the prophetes and in the Psalmes. ⁴⁵ Then opened he their wittes, that they myght vnderstande the scriptures,

⁴¹ The same founde his brother Simon fyrst, and sayde vnto him: we haue founde Messias, which is by interpretation, anointed:

³⁴ For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the wordes of God: For God geueth not the spirite by measure.

²⁸ After that when Iesus perceyued that all thynges were perfourmed, that the scrypture myght be fulfylled, he sayed: I thyrst. ²⁹ There stode a vessell full of vyneger by. And they fylled a sponge with vyneger, and wounde it aboute with ysope, and put it to hys mouthe. ³⁰ Assone as Iesus had receyued of the vyneger he sayed: It is finyshed: and bowed hys head, and gaue vp the ghoste.

¹⁴ But ye denyed the holye and iuste: and desyred a mortherer to be geuen you

²² For Moyses sayd vnto the fathers: A Prophete shall the Lorde youre God raise vp vnto you, euen of youre brethren lyke vnto me: hym shall ye heare in all thynges, whatsoeuer he shall saye vnto you.

²¹ Nowe verelye is the ryghteousnes that commeth of God, declared withoute the fulfyllynge of lawe, hauynge wytnes yet of the lawe and of the Prophetes. ²² The ryghteousnes no doubte whiche is good before God commeth by the fayth of Christe, vnto all and vpon all that beleue. There is no difference:

¹⁰ For yf when we were enemyes, we were reconciled to God by the death of hys sonne muche more, seynge we are reconciled, we shall be preserued by his lyfe.

³⁰ And vnto him partaine ye in Christe Iesus, whiche of God is made to vs wysdome, and also rightuousnes, and sanctifiynge and redemption.

¹⁸ Neuerthelesse all thynges are of God, whiche hath reconcyled vs vnto hym selfe by Iesus Christe, and hath geuen vnto vs the offyce to preache the attonement. ¹⁹ For God was in Christe, and made agrement betwene the worlde and hym selfe, and imputed not theyr synnes vnto them, & hathe committed to vs the preachynge of the atonnement. ²⁰ Nowe then are we messengers in the roume of Christ: euen as thoughe God dyd beseche you thorowe vs: So praye we you in Christes stede, that ye be atone with God, ²¹ for he hath made hym to be synne for vs, whiche knewe no synne, that we by hys meanes should be that ryghtuousnes whiche before God is allowed.

⁹ and might be founde in hym, not hauinge mine owne rightuousnes, which is of the lawe, but that whyche spryngeth of the fayth, is in CHRISTE. I meane the rightuousnes, whiche commeth of God thorowe fait

²⁰ and by hym to reconcile all thinge vnto him selfe, and to set at peace by him thorowe the bloude of his crosse, both thinges in heauen, and thinges in earth.

¹⁴ And hath put out the hande wryttinge that was againste vs, contayned in the lawe wrytten, and that hath he taken out of the waye, and hath fastened it to his crosse,

⁸ But vnto the sonne he sayeth: God thy seate shall be for euer and euer. The cepter of thy kyngdome is a ryghte ceptre. ⁹ Thou hast loued ryghtuousnes, and hated inyquytye. Wherfore God, whiche is thy GOD, hath anoynted the wyth the oyle of gladnes aboue thy felowes.

¹⁷ Wherfore in al thinges it became him to be made like vnto his brethren, that he myghte be mercyfull and a faythful hye prieste in thinges concerninge God, for to pourge the people synnes.

²⁶ Suche an hye Prieste it became vs to haue which is holy, harmlesse, vndefyled, separate from synners, and made hyer then heauen.

¹¹ But Christe beynge an hye prieste of good thynges to come, came by a greater & a more perfecte tabernacle, not made wyth handes: that is to saye, not of thys maner buyldynge, ¹² neyther by the bloude of gotes and calues, but by hys owne bloude he entred once for al into the holye place, and founde eternal redempcyon. ¹³ For yf the bloude of oxen and of gotes and the ashes of an heyfer, when it was sprinkled, puryfyed the vncleane, as touchyng the puryfiynge of the fleshe: ¹⁴ Howe muche more shall the bloude of Christe (which thorow the eternall spyryte offred hym selfe without spot to God) pourge youre conscyences from dead workes, for to serue the lyuyng God?

²⁶ for then must he haue often suffered sence the worlde beganne. But nowe in the ende of the worlde hath he appered ones to put synne to flyghte by the offerynge vp of hym self.

¹⁴ For wyth one offeryng hath he made perfecte for euer, them that are sanctyfyed.

¹ Simon Peter a seruaunte, and an Apostle of Iesus Christe, to them whyche haue obtained lyke precyous faith wyth vs in the rightuousnes that commeth of oure God and sauiour Iesu Christ.

⁸ He that committeth sinne, is of the deuil, for the deuil sinneth sence the beginninge. For this purpose appered the sonne of God to lowse the workes of the deuil.

⁷ And wryte vnto the tydinges bringer of the congregacyon of Philadelphia, this sayeth he that is holy and true, which hath the keye of Dauid, which openeth and no man shutteth, and shutteth & no man openeth.

⁶ And I sawe an angel flye in the middes of heauen hauinge an euerlastinge Gospell to preache vnto them that sytte and dwell on the earth, & to al nacions, kinredes, & tonges, and people,

²⁵ Then sayde the kynge vnto Sadock. Carye the arcke of God agayne into the cytye. If I shall fynd fauour in the eyes of the Lorde, he wyll bryng me agayne, and shewe me both it and the tabernacle therof also.

²⁴ Then ceased the worck of the house of God at Ierusalem, and contynued so vnto the second year of Darius kynge of Persia.

¹ Then commaunded kyng Darius that searche shoulde be made in the lybrary of the kinges treasure house, whych lay at Babilon. ² So at Egbathanis in a castel that lieth in the lande of the Medes, there was founde a boke, and in it was there an acte wrytten after this maner: ³ In the first year of kyng Cirus, commaunded the same king Cirus to buylde the house of God at Ierusalem, in the place where the sacryfyce is made, & to lay the foundacion to beare thre skore cubites height & thre skore cubytes bredth, ⁴ & thre walles of roughe stones, and one walle of tymber, and the expences shalbe geuen of the kinges house. ⁵ And the goulde and syluer vessel of the house of God (whiche Nabuchodonozor toke oute of the temple at Ierusalem, & brought vnto Babilon) shalbe restored agayne, that they maye be brought vnto the temple at Ierusalem to their place into the house of God. ⁶ Get you farre from them therfore, thou Thathanai captayne beyond the water, & Stharbuzanai, & youre councelers whiche are beyonde the water, get ye awaye from them. ⁷ Let them worcke in the house of God, that the captayne of the Iewes and their Elders maye buylde the house of God in his place. ⁸ I haue commaunded also, what shalbe done to the Elders of Iuda for the buyldyng of the house of God, that there shall dilygently be taken of the Kinges goodes, euen of the rentes beyonde the water, & geuen vnto the men, and that they be not hindred. ⁹ And yf they haue nede of calues, lambes, or goates, for the burntofferynge vnto the God of heauen, wheate, salt, wyne and oyle, after the custome of the pryestes at Ierusalem, there shalbe geuen tem daylie as is accordyng: & se that this be done without faute, ¹⁰ that they maye offre swete sauoures vnto the God of heauen, and praye for the kinges lyfe & for his children. ¹¹ This commaundement haue I geuen. And what man soeuer he be that altereth these wordes, there shall a beame be taken from his house, & set vp, and he shalbe hanged theron, & his house shalbe prysed for the deade. ¹² But the God that dwelleth in heauen, destroye al kinges and people, that put to their hande to alter & to breake doune the house of God at Ierusalem. I Darius haue commaunded, that this he diligently done. ¹³ Then Thathanai the captayne beyond the water, and Stharbuzanai with their counselers (to whom king Darius had sent) dyd theyr diligence. ¹⁴ And the Elders of the Iewes builded, and they prospered thorowe the Prophesyenge of Aggeus the Prophet and Zachari the sonne of Ado: and they buylded, and set vp the worcke, accordinge to the commaundemente of the God of Israel, and after the commaundement of Cyrus, Darius & Arthaxerses kinges of Persia. ¹⁵ And they perfourmed the house vnto the thirde daye of the moneth Adar, that was in the sixte year of the raigne of kinge Darius.

¹ After these actes in the raigne of Arthaxerses kinge of Persia, there went vp from Babilon, Esdras the sonne of Saraiah, the sonne of Asariah, the sonne of Helkiah,

⁸ And they came to Ierusalem in the fyfth moneth, that is the seuenth yeare of the kinge.

¹¹ And this is the copy of the letter, that kinge Arthaxerses gaue vnto Esdras the pryest, the scribe, whiche was a teacher in the wordes of the Lorde & of hys statues ouer Israel. ¹² Vnto Esdras the priest and scribe in the lawe of the God of heauen, peace and salutacyon. ¹³ I haue commaunded, that all they of the people of Israel, and of the priestes and Leuites in my reaulme, whyche are mynded of their owne good wil to go vp to Ierusalem, that they go wyth the, ¹⁴ beynge sent of the kynge and of the seuen Lordes of the counsel, to vyset Iuda & Ierusalem, accordynge to the lawe of God, whiche is in thy hand. ¹⁵ And that thou shouldest take with the, syluer and goulde, whiche the king & the Lordes of hys counsel geue of their owne good will vnto the God of Israel (whose habytacyon is at Ierusalem) ¹⁶ and all the syluer and goulde that thou canst fynd in al the countre of Babilon, with it that the people and pryestes geue of their owne good wil vnto the house of God at Ierusalem. ¹⁷ Take thou the same, and bye dylygently wyth the same moneye, calues, lambes, goates, & meateofferynges & drinckeofferynges, to be offered vpon the aulter of the house of youre God at Ierusalem. ¹⁸ And loke what it liketh the and thy brethren to do with the remnaunt of the money, that do after the wyl of your God. ¹⁹ And the vessels that are geuen the for the mynystracion in the house of thy God, those delyuer thou before God at Ierusalem. ²⁰ And whatsoeuer thynge more shalbe nedeful for thy house of thy God, whych is necessary for the to spende, let the same be geuen out of the kynges chamber. ²¹ I kynge Arthaxerses haue commaunded al the treasures beyond the water, that loke whatsoeuer Esdras the pryeste and scrybe in the lawe of the God of heauen requyreth of you, that ye fulfyll the same dylygently, ²² vntyll an hundred talentes of syluer, vntil an hundred quarters of wheat and tyll an hundred Batthes of wyne, and tyll an hundred Batthes of oyle, and salt wythoute measure. ²³ Whatsoeuer belongeth to the law of the God of heauen, let the same be done wyth dylygence for the house of the God of heauen, that there come no wrathe vpon the kynges reaulme and his children. ²⁴ And knowen be it vnto you, that ye shal haue no auctorite to requyre taxynge and custome, & yearly rentes vpon any of the pryestes Leuites, singers, porters, Nethinims & mynysters in the house of thys good. ²⁵ But thou Esdras (after the wysedome of the God that is in thy hand) set thou iudgers and arbiters to iudge all the people that is beyonde Iordan, euen all suche as knowe the law of thy God: and them that knowe it not, those se, that ye teache: ²⁶ & whosoeuer wyll not dylygently fulfyll the law of thy God, and the kynges law, shal haue his iudgement for the dead whether it be vnto death or to be banished or to be condemned in goodes, or to be put in preson.

¹ In the moneth Nisan in the twentieth yeare of kynge Arthaxerses, when the wyne stode before him, I toke vp the wyne, & gaue it vnto the kynge & I was heauy in hys presence. ² Then sayd the kyng vnto me: why lokest thou so sadly? Thou arte not sick, that is not the matter, but thou arte heuy herted. Neuerthelesse I was sore afrayed ³ & sayde vnto the kynge: God saue the kynges lyfe for euer, shulde I not loke sadly? the cytye of my fathers buryall lyeth waste & the gates thereof are consumed with fyre. ⁴ Then sayde the kyng vnto me: what is then thy request? then made I my prayer to the God of heauen, ⁵ and sayde vnto the king: yf it please the kyng, and yf thy seruaunte be fauoured in thy syghte, I be seke the sende me into Iuda vnto the cytye of my fathers buriall, that I maye buylde it. ⁶ And the kynge sayde vnto me, & so dyd the quene that sat by him: how long shal thy iourney continue, & when wylt thou come againe? And it pleased the kinge to sende me, and I set hym a tyme, ⁷ and sayde vnto the kynge: yf it please the kynge, let hym geue me letters to the capptaynes beyond the water, that they may conueye me ouer, tyll I come into Iuda: ⁸ & letters vnto Asaph the Lord of the kynges wood that he may geue me wood for beames to the gates of the palace, which are hard on the house and harde on the walles of the citie, and for the house that I shall entre into. And the kynge gaue me accordynge to the good hand of God vpon me:

¹ And Eliasib the hye priest gat hym vp wyth hys brethren the priestes, and buylded the Shepegate. They repared it, & set vp the dores of it, euen vnto the toure Meah repared they it, namely vnto the toure of Hananeel.

⁸ and conspyred all together to come & fyghte agaynste Ierusalem, and to make an hinderaunce there in.

¹⁶ And from that tyme forth it came to passe, that the halfe parte of the younge men dyd the laboure, and the other halfe parte helde the speares, shyldes, bowes, and brestplates: and the rulers stode behynde all the house of Iuda, ¹⁷ whyche buylded on the wall, and bare burthens, from those that laded them. Wyth one hande dyd they the worke, and wyth the other held they theyr weapen. ¹⁸ And euerye one that buylded, had hys swerde gyrde by hys syde, and so buylded they. And the trompetters stode besyde me.

¹⁵ And the wall was fynyshed on the fyue & twentye daye of the moneth Elul, in two & fyftye dayes.

¹⁰ For myne enemyes speake agaynst me & they that laye wayte for my soule, take their councell together,

⁶ For vnto vs a chylde shalbe borne, and vnto vs a sonne shalbe geuen. Vpon his shoulder shall the kyngedome lye, and he shalbe called with hys owne name. The wonderous geuer of councel, the myghty God, the euerlastinge father, the prynce of peace,

⁴ Beholde, I shall geue him for a wytnesse amonge the folke, for a Prynce and Captaine vnto the people.

¹¹ Yea it grewe vp vnto the prince of the host from whom the dayly offeringe was taken, & the place of his Sanctuary casten doune:

²⁵ And thorowe his craftynes, falshed shall prospere in his hande, hys herte shalbe proude, and many one shall be put to deathe in his welthinesse. He shall stand vp against the Prince of Princes, but he shalbe destroyed wythoute hande.

²³ For as sone as thou begannest to make thy prayer, it was so diuised, and therfore am I come to shewe the. And why? For thou arte a man greatly beloued. Wherfore, pondre the matter well, that thou mayest learne, to vnderstande the vision.

² And thou Bethleem Ephrata, art lytle among the thousandes of Iuda, Out of the shall come vnto me, whyche shall be the gouernoure in Israell: whose out goinge hath bene from the begynnyge, and from euerlastynge.

²³ But he whiche is sowen in the good ground, is he that heareth the worde and vnderstandeth it, whiche also beareth frute and bryngeth forth, some an .C. folde, some sixtye folde, and some .xxx. folde.

²⁵ The woman sayd vnto him: I wot well Messias shal come, whiche is called Christe. When he is come, he wyll tell vs all thinges.

¹⁵ and kylled the Lorde of lyfe, whom god hath raysed from death, of the whiche we are wytnesses.

³¹ Hym hath God lyfte vp with his ryght hand to be a ruler and a sauiour, for to geue repentaunce to Israell and forgeuenes of synnes?

³⁰ And Philippe ranne to him, and hearde hym reade the Prophete Esaias and saied: Vnderstandeste thou what thou readeste?

¹⁶ redeminge the time, for the dayes are iuel.

⁵ and from Iesus Christ, whiche is a faythfull wytnes, and fyrst begotten of the dead, and Lorde ouer the kynges of the earth. Vnto him, that loued vs and washed vs from synnes in his owne bloude,

¹⁶ And hath on hys vesture & on hys thighe a name wrytten: king of kinges, & Lord of Lordes,

¹⁵ My strength is dryed vp lyke a potsherde, my tunge cleueth to my goomes, & thou haste brought me into the dust of death.

⁷ Beholde, the Lorde shall brynge mightye and greate floudes of water vpon them: namely the kinge of the Assirians with all his power. Whyche shall poure oute his furiousnesse vpon euery man, and runne ouer all their banckes.

⁸ He shall be had awaye, hys cause not hearde, & wythout any iudgement: Whose generacion yet no man maye nombre, when he shalbe cut of from the grounde of the lyuyng: Which punishment shall go vpon him, for the transgression of my people.

⁷ But what is he this, that swelleth vp, as it were a floud, roaring & raging like the streames of water?

²⁷ He shall make a stronge bonde with many, for the space of a weke: and when the weke is halfe gone, he shall put doune the slayne and meateofferinge. And in the temple there shalbe an abhominable desolacion, till it haue destroyed all. And it is concluded, that thys wasting shall continue vnto the ende.

¹⁰ Wherfore hys sonnes shalbe displeased, and shall gather together a myghtye greate hoste of people: and one of them shall come, and go thorowe lyke a waterflowed: then shall he returne, and go forth with defyinge and boastinge vnto his owne lande.

¹⁷ He shal set his face wt al his power to obtayne his kyngedome, and to be lyke it. Yea that shall he do, and geue hym vnto the doughters amonge wemen, to destroye hym. But he shall fayle, neyther shall he obtayne his purpose.

⁹ Then sayd he: cal his name Lo amy. For why? ye are not my people, therfore wyll I not be youres.

⁸ Shall not the lande tremble, and all they that dwell therin, mourne for thys? Shall not their destruccyon come vpon them lyke a water streame, and flowe ouer them, as the floude of Egypte?

⁵ For when the Lorde God of hoostes toucheth a lande, it consumeth awaye, and all they that dwell therin, muste nedes mourne: And why? theyr destruccyon shall aryse as euery streame and runne ouer them, as the floude in Egipte.

⁸ when the floude renneth ouer, and destroyeth the place, and when the darcknesse foloweth styll vpon his enemyes.

² The kyngdome of heauen is like vnto a certayne kynge, whiche maryed hys sonne,

⁷ When the kynge hearde that, he was wrothe and sente forthe hys warryers and destroyed those murtherers and brent vp theyr citie.

³⁸ Beholde your habitation shalbe left vnto you desolate.

² Iesus sayde vnto them: Se ye not all these thinges? Verely I say vnto you there shal not be here left one stone vpon another that shall not be cast doune.

⁶ Ye shall heare of warres? and of the fame of warres: but se that ye be not troubled. For all these thinges muste come to passe, but the ende is not yet. ⁷ For nacion shall ryse against nacion and realme against realme: and ther shalbe pestylence, honger and earth quakes in certayne places? ⁸ All these are the begynnynge of sorowes. ⁹ Then shall they put you to trouble, and shall kyll you: and ye shalbe hated of all nacions for my names sake. ¹⁰ And then shall manye be offended, and shal betray one another, and shall hate one the other. ¹¹ And manye false prophetes shall aryse, and shall deceyue manye. ¹² And because iniquite shall haue the vpper hande the loue of manye shall abate. ¹³ But he that endureth to the ende, the same shall be safe. ¹⁴ And this glad tydinges of the kingdome shalbe preached in all the worlde, for a wytnes vnto all nacions: & then shal the ende come.

¹² He aunswered and sayde vnto them: Helias verely shal first come and restore all thinges. And also the sonne of man as it is written, shall suffer many thynges, and shalbe set at nought.

² And Iesus aunswered, and sayd vnto hym: Seest thou these greate buyldinges? There shall not be left one stone vpon another, that shall not be throwen doune.

⁷ When ye shal heare of warre, and tydynges of warre, be ye not troubled. For suche thynges muste nedes be. But the ende is not yet.

⁴³ For the dayes shall come vpon the, that thyne enemyes shal cast a banke aboute the, & compasse the round and kepe the on euerye syde, ⁴⁴ and make the euen with the grounde, with children whiche are in the. And they shall not leaue in the one stone vpon another, because thou knowest not the tyme of thy visitacyon.

⁶ The dayes will come, when of these thinges which ye se shal not be left stone vpon stone, that shall not be throwen doune.

²⁴ And they shall fall on the edge of the swearde, and shalbe lead captyue into all nacyons. And Ierusalem shalbe troden vnder fote of the gentyls vntyll the tyme of the gentyls be fulfylled.

²⁶ Ought not Christ to haue suffred these thinges and to enter into his glorye?

⁴⁶ and sayde vnto them: Thus is it written, and thus it behoued Christ to suffer: and to ryse agayne from death the thirde day,

⁵¹ Thys spake he not of hym selfe, but beynge hye Prieste that same yeare he prophesyed that Iesus shoulde dye for the people, ⁵² and not for the people only, but that he shoulde gather together in one the children of God which were scattered abrode.

³² And I, yf I were lyft vp from the earth, will drawe all men vnto me. ³³ This sayde Iesus, signifyenge what death he shoulde dye. ³⁴ The people aunswered hym: We haue hearde oute of the lawe, that Christe bydeth euer: and howe sayest thou then that the sonne of man muste be lyfte vp? who is that sonne of man?

³⁰ Here after will I not talke manye wordes vnto you. For the ruler of thys world cometh and hath noughte in me.

¹³ and brought him to the counsell and brought forth false witnesses whiche sayde. This man ceaseth not to speake blaspemous wordes against thys holy place, and the lawe, ¹⁴ for we hearde him saie: this Iesus of Nazareth shall destroye this place, and shal chaung the ordinaunces, which Moises gaue vs.

²¹ for he hath made hym to be synne for vs, whiche knewe no synne, that we by hys meanes should be that ryghtuousnes whiche before God is allowed.

¹³ But Christ hath delyuered vs from the curse of the lawe, and was made accursed for vs. For it is wrytten: cursed is euery one that hangeth on tre,

²¹ for here vnto verelye were ye called: for Christe also suffered for vs, leauynge vs an ensample that we shoulde folowe his steppes,

²⁴ which hys owne selfe bare oure synnes in hys body on the tree, that we shoulde be delyuered from synne, and shoulde lyue in ryghtuousnes. By whose strypes ye were healed.

¹⁸ For as much as Christ hath ones suffered for sinners, the iuste for the vniuste, for to bringe vs to God, and was kylled, as perteininge to the fleshe: but was quickened in the spirite.

²⁶ I cal heauen and earth to recorde vnto you thys day, that ye shal shortely perishe from of the lande whither ye go ouer Iordan to possesse it: ye shal not prolong your daies therin but shal shortly be destroyed. ²⁷ And the Lorde shal scatter you among nations, & ye shalbe left fewe in numbre among the people whyther the lord shal bryng you, ²⁸ & there ye shall serue Gods whych are the workes of mans hand, wod & stone which neither se nor heare nor eate nor smell.

¹⁸ Lest there be among you man or woman kynred or trybe, that turneth away in hys hert thys day from the Lord our God, to go and serue the goddes of these nacions: & lest there be amonge you some roote that beareth gall and wormwod, ¹⁹ so that when he heareth the wordes of this curse, he blesse him self in his hert saying: I shall haue peace. I wyll therfore worke after the luste of myne owne hert, that the droncken may perysh with the thyrstye.

¹⁷ But and if thyne hert turne away, so that thou wylte not heare: but shalt go astraye & worshyp straunge Goddes and serue them, ¹⁸ I pronounce vnto you thys daye, that ye shall surely perysh, and that ye shal not prolonge your daies vpon the land whither thou passest ouer Iordan to go and possesse it.

²⁸ Gather vnto me all the elders of youre trybes, & youre offycers, that I may speake these wordes in theyr eares & call heauen and earth to record against them. ²⁹ For I am sure that after my death, they wil vtterly marre them selues, and turne from the way which I commaunded you, & tribulation wyl come vpon you in the later daies, when ye haue wrought wyckednes in the syght of the Lorde to prouoke hym wyth the worckes of your handes.

¹⁹ And when the Lord sawe it, he was angry bicause of the prouokyng of hys sonnes and daughters. ²⁰ And he sayd: I wyl hyde my face frome them & wyll se what their ende shall be. For they are a frowarde generation & chyldren in whom is no faith. ²¹ They haue angred me wt that which is no God, & prouoked me wyth theyr vanities. And I agayne wyll anger them wyth them whiche are no people, and wyl prouoke them wyth a folysh nation. ²² For fyre is kindeled in my wrath, and shal burne vnto the bottome of hell. And shall consume the earth wyth hyr encrease, & set a fyre the bottomes of the mountaines. ²³ I wyll heape mischeues vpon them & wyl spend al myne arrowes at them. ²⁴ Burnt with hongre & consumed with heat and wt bytter pestelence. I wyll also sende the teeth of beastes vppon them and poyson serpentes. ²⁵ Withoute forthe, the swerde shal robbe them of theyr chyldren: and wythin in the chamber, feare: both younge menne and yong womenne & the suckelynges wyth the men of gray heades. ²⁶ I haue determined to skatter them thorowoute the worlde, and to make awaye the remembraunce of theym from amonge men. ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the raylynge of theyr enemies, lest theyr aduersaries woulde be proude and saye: our hye hande hathe done all these worckes and not the Lorde. ²⁸ For it is a nation that hath an vnhappye forcast, and hath no vnderstanding in them: ²⁹ I would they were wyse and vnderstode thys & woulde consider their later ende. ³⁰ How it cometh that one shal chace a thousande, and two putt ten thousande of theym to flyght, excepte theyr rocke had solde them, and bicause the Lord had deliuered them. ³¹ For oure rocke is not as theyr rocke, no thoughe oure enemies be iudge. ³² But theyr vynes are of the vynes of Sodome, & of the feldes of Gomorra. Theyr grapes are grapes of gall, and theyr clusters be bitter. ³³ Theyr wyne is the poyson of dragons, and the cruel gall of aspes. ³⁴ Are not such thynges layed in store wyth me, and sealed vp among my treasures? ³⁵ Vengeaunce is mine, and I wyll reward: theyr fete shall slyde, when the tyme cometh. For the tyme of theyr destruccion is at hand, & the tyme that shal come vpon them maketh hast. ³⁶ For the Lorde wyll do iustice vnto hys people, & haue compassion on hys seruauntes For it shalbe sene that theyr power shall fayle, & at the last they shalbe prisoned & forsaken. ³⁷ And it shal be sayd, wher are their Gods and theyr rocke wherin they trusted? ³⁸ The fatt of whose sacrifices they ate and dranke the wyne of theyr drynkeofferinges, let them ryse vp and helpe you and be youre protection. ³⁹ Se nowe howe that I, I am he, and that there is no God but I. I can kyll and make a lyue, and what I haue smytten that I can heale: neyther is there that can deliuer anye man out of my hande. ⁴⁰ For I wyll lyfte vp myne hand to heauen, and wyl say: I lyue euer. ⁴¹ If I whett the edge of my swerd, & mine hand take in hand to do iustice, I wil shewe vengeaunce on myne enemyes & wyl reward them that hate me. ⁴² I wyl make myne arowes dronken with bloud, and my swerde shal eate fleshe of the bloude of the slayne & of the captyue and of the bare head of the enemy. ⁴³ Prayse ye heathen hys people, for he wil auenge the bloude of hys seruauntes, & wyl auenge hym of his aduersaries, and wyll be merciful vnto the land of hys people. ⁴⁴ And Moses went & spake al these wordes of thys songe in the eares of the people, both he and Iosua the sonne of Nun.

²² Let their table be made a snare to take them selues with all, an occasyon to fall and a reward vnto them. ²³ Let their eyes be blinded, that they se not: and euer bow downe their backes. ²⁴ Power out thyne indignacyon vpon them, and let thy wrathfull dyspleasure take holde of them. ²⁵ Let theyr habytacyon be voyd, and no man to dwel in ther tentes. ²⁶ For they persecute hym whom thou hast smytten, and besyde thy woundes they haue geuen him mo. ²⁷ Let them fall from one wyckednesse to another, and not come into thy ryghtuousnesse. ²⁸ Let them be wyped out of the boke of the lyuynge, and not be wrytten amonge the ryghtuous.

²² For thoughe thy people (O Israel) be as the sande of the sea, yet shall but the remnaunt of them onely conuerte vnto hym. Perfecte is the iudgement of hym that floweth in ryghteousnesse, ²³ and therfore the Lorde of Hostes shall perfectlye fulfyll the thynge, that he had determyned in the myddest of the whole world.

²² And therfore make no mockes at it, that youre captiuite increase not: for I haue hearde the Lorde of Hostes saye, that there shall come a soden destruccyon & plage vpon the whole earthe.

⁶ I the Lorde haue called the in rightuousnesse, & led the by the hande. Therfore wyll I also defende the, and geue the for a couenaunt of the people, and to be the lyght of the Gentyles.

¹¹ Wyth trauayle and laboure of hys soule, shall he obtayne great ryches. My ryghtuous seruaunte shall wyth hys wysdome iustifye & delyuer the multitude, for he shal beare away theyr synnes,

³ Encline youre eares, & come vnto me, take hede, & your soule shall lyue. For I wyll make an euerlastynge couenaunt wyth you, euen the sure mercyes of Dauid.

³¹ Beholde, the dayes come (sayeth the Lord) that I wil make a newe couenaunt with the house of Israell & with the house of Iuda: ³² not after the couenaunte that I made wyth theyr fathers, when I toke them by the hande, and led them oute of the lande of Egypte: whiche couenaunte they brake, wherfore I punyshed them sore, sayeth the Lorde: ³³ But thys shall be the couenaunte that I wyll make with the house of Israel after those dayes, sayeth the Lorde: I wyll plante my lawe in the inwarde partes of them, & wryte it in theyr hertes, and wilbe theyr God, and they shalbe my people. ³⁴ And from thence forth shall no man teache his neyghboure or his brother, and say know the Lorde: But they shall all knowe me, from the loweste vnto the hyeste, sayeth the Lorde. For I wyll forgeue theyr mysdedes, and wil neuer remembre theyr sinnes any more.

⁴⁰ And I wyll set vp an euerlastinge couenaunt with them, Namely, that I will neuer ceasse to do them good, and that I will put my feate in ther hertes so that they shall not runne awaye from me. ⁴¹ Yea I wyll haue a lust and pleasure to do them good, and faythfully to plante them in this lande, with my whole herte, and with al my soule. ⁴² For thus sayeth the Lorde: lyke as I haue brought all thys great plage vpon this people: so wyll I also brynge vpon them all the good, that I haue promised them.

⁶⁰ Neuerthelesse, I wyll remembre the couenaunte, that I made wyth the in thy youth, in so much that it shalbe an euerlastinge couenaunt: ⁶¹ so that thou also remembre thy wayes, & be ashamed of them: then shalte thou receyue of me thy elder and younger sisters, whome I will make thy doughters, and that besyde thy couenaunt. ⁶² And so will I renue my couenaunt with the, that thou mayest know that I am the Lorde: ⁶³ that thou mayest thyncke vpon it, be ashamed, and excuse thine owne confusyon no more: when I haue forgeuen the, all that thou hast done, sayeth the Lorde God.

¹³ Vpon this I heard one of the sayntes speakinge, whiche saynte sayde vnto one that asked this questyon: How longe shall this vysion of the daylye sacrifice and of the wasting abhominacion endure: that the Sanctuarye and the power shall so be troden vnder fote?

³⁶ The kinge shal do what him lyst, he shal exalte and magnifye him selfe agaynste all, that is God. Yea he shall speake maruelous thinges against the God of al goddes, wherin he shall prospere, so longe till the wrathe be fulfilled, for the conclusyon is deuysed alredy.

¹¹ And from the time forth that the dayly offeringe shalbe put doune & the abhominable desolacyon set vp, there shalbe a thousande two hundreth & .xc. dayes.

²⁸ For thys is my bloude of the newe testament, that shalbe shedde for many, for the remissyon of synnes.

⁵¹ And beholde the vayle of the tempell dyd rent in twayne from the toppe to the bottome and the earth dyd quake, and the rockes did rent,

²⁰ And when ye se Ierusalem beseged with an hoste, then vnderstande that the solacion of the same is nye.

¹⁵ But the gyfte is not lyke as the synne. For yf thorowe the synne of one, manye be dead: muche more plentuous vpon manye was the grace of God and gyfte by grace: Which grace was geuen by one man Iesus Christe.

¹⁹ For as by one mans disobedience many became synners: so by the obedience of one, shall manye be made ryghtuouse.

²⁶ and so al Israel shalbe saued. As it is wrytten: There shal come oute of Syon he that doeth delyuer, and shall turne away the vngodlynes of Iacob.

⁸ And I saye that Iesu Christ was a mynyster of the circumcysyon for the trueth of God is to confyrme the promyses made vnto the fathers. ⁹ And let the Gentyles prayse God for hys mercye, as it is written: For thys cause I wyll prayse the amonge the Gentyles, & sing in thy name.

¹³ But Christ hath delyuered vs from the curse of the lawe, and was made accursed for vs. For it is wrytten: cursed is euery one that hangeth on tre, ¹⁴ that the blessyng of Abraham myghte come on the Gentyles thorowe Iesus Christ and that we myght receyue the promes of the spyryte thorow fayth. ¹⁵ Brethren I wyll speake after the maner of men. Thoughe it be but a mans testamente, yet no man despyseth it, or addeth any thyng there to when it is once alowed. ¹⁶ To Abraham and hys seede were the promyses made. He sayth not in the sedes as in manye: but in thy sede as in one, whiche is Christe. ¹⁷ Thys I saye, that the lawe which beganne afterward beyonde: .iiij.C. and .xxx. yeares doth not disanull the testament, that was confyrmed afore of God vnto Christe warde, to make the promes of none effecte.

¹³ For when God made promes to Abraham, because he had no greater thynge to sweare by, he sweare by hym selfe, ¹⁴ saiynge: Surelye I wyl blesse the, and multyplye the in deede. ¹⁵ And so after that he had taryed a longe tyme, he enioyed the promes. ¹⁶ Men verelye sweare by hym that is greater then them selues, & an othe to confyrme the thynge, is amonge them an ende of all stryfe. ¹⁷ So God wyllynge verye aboundauntlye to shewe vnto the heyres of promes, the stablenes of hys counsayle, he added an othe, ¹⁸ that by two immutable thynges (in which it was vnpossyble that GOD shaulde lye) we myghte haue perfecte consolacyon, whiche haue fled, for to holde faste the hope that is set before vs,

⁸ For in rebukyng them he sayth: beholde the dayes wyll come (sayeth the Lorde) and I wyll fynyshe vpon the house of Israel, and vpon the house of Iuda, ⁹ a newe testamente: not lyke the testament that I made wyth theyr fathers at that tyme when I toke them by the handes, to leade them oute of the lande of Egypte, for they continued not in my testamente, and I regarded them not sayth the Lorde. ¹⁰ For thys is the testament that I will make wyth the house of Israel: After those dayes sayth the Lorde: I wyl put my lawes in their myndes, and in theyr hertes I wyl wryte them and I wyll be theyr God, and they shall be my people. ¹¹ And they shall not teache euerye man hys neyghboure, and euerye man hys brother, saiynge: knowe the Lorde: For they shall knowe me, from the leste to the most of them: ¹² For I wyll be mercyfull ouer theyr vnryghtuousnes, and on theyr synnes & on theyr iniquities. ¹³ In that he sayth a newe testament he hath abrogate the olde. Now that which is dysanulled and waxed olde, is readye to vanyshe awaye.

¹⁵ And for thys cause is: he the medyatour of the new testament, that thorowe death whiche chaunsed for the redempcyon of those transgressyons that were in the fyrst testament, they whiche were called myght receyue the promes of eternall inherytaunce. ¹⁶ For wheresoeuer is a testamente, there muste also be the death of hym that maketh the testament. ¹⁷ For the testament taketh authoritie when men are dead. For it is of no value as longe as he that made it, is alyue. ¹⁸ For whiche cause also, neyther that fyrst testament was ordeyned without bloude. ¹⁹ For when al the commaundementes were reade of Moyses to all the people, he toke the bloude of calues and of gotes, whiche water and purple woul and ysope, and sprynkled both the boke and all the peopl ²⁰ saiynge: thys is the bloud of the Testamente, with GOD hath appoynted vnto you.

²⁸ euen so Christ was ones offered to take away the synnes of many, and vnto them that loke for hym, shall he appere agayne wythoute synne vnto saluacyon.

⁴ For it is vnpossyble that the bloude of oxen and of gotes shoulde take awaye synnes. ⁵ Wherfore, when he commeth into the world he sayth: Sacrifyce and offerynge thou wouldest not haue: but a body hast thou ordeyned me. ⁶ In sacryfyces and synne offerynges thou hast not luste. ⁷ Then I saide: Lo I come, in the cheyfest in the boke it is wrytten of me, that I should do thy wil, o God. ⁸ Aboue when he had sayd sacryfyce and offerynge, and burnte sacrifices and synne offerynges thou wouldest not haue, neither hast alowed (whyche yet are offered by the lawe) ⁹ and then sayd, Lo I come to do thy wyll, O God: he taketh awaye the fyrste to stablysshe the latter. ¹⁰ By the whiche wyll we are sanctyfyed, by the offerynge of the bodye of Ieu Christ once for all. ¹¹ And euery priest is redy daylie mynistring and ofte tymes offereth one maner of offerynge whyche can neuer take awaye synnes. ¹² But thys man after he had offered one sacryfyce for synnes, satte hym downe for euer on the right hande of God, ¹³ and from henceforth taryeth tyl hys foes be made hys fote stole. ¹⁴ For wyth one offeryng hath he made perfecte for euer, them that are sanctyfyed. ¹⁵ And the holy ghost also beareth vs record of thys, euen when he told before: ¹⁶ Thys is the testamente that I wyl make to them: after those dayes sayth the Lorde. I wyll put my lawes in theyr hertes and in theyr mynde I wyll wryte them ¹⁷ and theyr synnes and iniquities wyll I remember no more. ¹⁸ And where remyssyon of these thynges is, there is no more offerynge for synne. ¹⁹ Seynge brethren that, by the meanes of the bloude of Iesu, we may be bold to enter into that holy place, ²⁰ by the newe and lyuynge waye, whych he hath prepared for vs, thorow the vayle, that is to say hys flesh. ²¹ And seynge also that we haue an hye pryest which is ruler ouer the house of God ²² let vs draw nye wyth a true herte in a full fayth, sprynkeled in our hertes from an euyl conscyence, and washed in our bodyes wyth pure water,

²⁰ The God of peace that brought agayne from death oure Lorde Iesus, the great shepe herde of the shepe, thorowe the bloude of the euerlastynge testament, ²¹ make you perfecte in all good workes, to do hys wyl, workynge in you that whiche is pleasaunte in hys syghte thorowe Iesus Christe. To whom be prayse for euer whyle the worlde endureth. Amen.
