¹² But it wyl not go of, there is so muche of it: the rustinesse must be brent out.

⁵ And whan the Lord saw that the wekednesse of man was encreased vpon the erth, & that al the ymaginacion & thoughtes of his hert was only euell contynually, ⁶ he repented that he had made man vpon the erth, and sorowed in his hert. ⁷ And sayd: I wyl destroy mankynde whych I haue made, from of the face of the erth: both man, beast, worme and foule of the ayre, for it repenteth me that I haue made them.

²¹ And the Lorde smelled a swete sauour, & sayd in his hert: I wyll henceforth no more cursse the earthe for mans sake, for the imagination of mans herte is euyll, euen from the very youth of him. Moreouer I wyl not destroy from henceforthe all that lyueth as I haue done.

⁵ Wherfore shulde ye be plaged any more? For ye are euer fallyng away. The whole head is sick, & the herte is very heauy.

¹³ Thou haste hytherto had manye councels of them, so let the heauengasers & the beholders of starres come on now and delyuer the: yea & let them shewe, when these new thynges shal come vpon the.

⁹ Thou wentest streyght to kinges with oyle & diuerse oyntmentes (that is) thou hast sente thy messaungers farre of, and yet arte thou fallen into the pyt therby. ¹⁰ Thou hast had trouble for the multitude of thine owne waies, yet saydest thou neuer: I will leaue of. Thou thynkest to haue lyfe (or health) of thy selfe, & therfore thou beleuest not that thou art syck.

¹³ For my people hath done two euyls. They haue forsaken me the well of the water of life and dygged them pyttes, yea vyle & broken pittes, that holde no water.

³ Where as thou (O Lorde) lokest only vpon faythe and truthe. Thou hast scourged them, but they toke no repentaunce: thou hast correcte them for amendement, but they refused thy correccion. They made their faces harder then a stone, and woulde not amende.

⁵ Yea one dyssembleth with another, & they deale wyth no trueth. They haue practysed theyr tunges to lye, and taken greate paynes to do myschefe.

¹⁴ Hys wysdom maketh all men fooles. And confounded be all casters of ymages, for that they cast, is but a vayne thynge, and hath no lyfe. ¹⁵ The vayne craftesmen with theyr worckes, that they in theyr vanite haue made, shall peryshe one with another in the tyme of vysitacyon.

¹⁶ As for the wordes that thou hast spoken vnto vs in the name of the Lorde, we will in no wyse heare them: ¹⁷ but whatsoeuer goeth oute of oure owne mouth, that wyl we do. We wyl do sacryfice, and offre oblacions vnto the Quene of Heauen: lyke as we & our forefathers, our kinges and oure heades haue done in the cities of Iuda, & in the stretes, & feldes of Ierusalem. For then had we plenteousnesse of vytayles, then were we in prosperytie, and no mysfortune came vpon vs.

⁵⁸ Moreouer, thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: The thycke wall of Babylon shalbe broken, & her proude gates shalbe brent vp. And the thynge that the Gentyles and the people haue wrought with greate trauayle and laboure, shal come to naught and be consumed in the fyre.

⁶ With that sayde the Lorde God on thys maner: Wo be vnto the bloudye citie of the pot, whervpon the rustinesse hangeth, and is not yet scoured awaye. Take out the peces that are in it, one after another: there neade not lottes be cast therfore,

¹³ Thy filthinesse is abhominable, for I woulde haue clensed the, but thou wouldest not be clensed. Thou canste not be pourged from thyne vnclennesse, tyll I haue poured my wrothfull indignacyon vpon the.

¹³ Yea all this plage, as it is wrytten in the lawe of Moses, is come vpon vs. Yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turne agayne from our wickednesse, and to be learned in thy verite. ¹⁴ Therefore hathe the Lorde made haste, to brynge this plage vpon vs, for the Lorde our God is ryghteous, in all his worckes which he doeth: for why, we woulde not herken vnto his voyce.

¹ Ephraim kepeth the ayre, and folowed after the east winde: he is euer increasinge lyes & destruccyon. They be confederate with the Assirians, their oyle is caried into Egypte.

¹³ Shall not the Lorde of hostes brynge thys to passe, that the laboures of the people shal be brent wyth a greate fyre, & that the thynge wherevpon the people haue weeryed them selues, shall be lost?

¹⁸ What helpe then wyll the Image do, whom the worckman hath fashyoned? Or the vayne cast Image, wherein because the craftesman putteth hys trust, therfore maketh he domme Idols? ¹⁹ Wo vnto hym, that sayeth to a pece of woode: aryse, & to a domme stone: stande vp. For what instruccyon maye suche one geue? Beholde it is layed ouer wyth gold and siluer and there is no breth in it.
