⁵ Yee euen thus sayeth the Lord God: In the fyre of my gelousy haue I take a deuyce, agaynst the resydue of the Gentiles, and agaynst all Edom which haue taken in my lande vnto them selues for a possession, which also reioysed from their whole herte with a dyspiteful stomacke to waste it, and to spoyle it.

²⁴ For the Lorde thy God is a consuming fyre, and a gelouse God.

⁴ Come (saye they) let vs rote them out from amonge the people, that the name of Israell maye be put out of remembraunce. ⁵ For they haue caste their heades together with one consent, & are confederate agaynst the. ⁶ The tabernacles of the Edomites and Ismaelytes, the Moabytes and Hagarenes. ⁷ Gebal, Ammom, and Amalech: the Philistines with them that dwell at Tyre. ⁸ Assur also is ioyned vnto them, and helpe the chyldren of Loth. Selah. ⁹ But do thou to them as vnto the Madianites, vnto Sisera, and vnto Iabin by the broke of Kyson. ¹⁰ Whych peryshed at Endor, & became as the donge of the earth. ¹¹ Make their prynces lyke Oreb & Zeb. Yea, make all their prynces lyke as Zebea & Salmana. ¹² Whiche saye: we will haue the houses of God in possession.

⁷ Remember the children of Edom, O Lorde in the daye of Ierusalem, howe they sayde: doune wyth it, doune wyth it: euen to the grounde.

⁵ Who so laugheth the pore to scorne blasphemeth hys maker: & he that is glad of another mans hurt, shall not be vnpunished.

¹⁷ Reioyce not thou at the fall of thyne enemye, and let not thyne herte be glad when he stombleth. ¹⁸ Lest the Lord (when he seyth it) be angrie, & turne hys wrath from him vnto the.

¹ Come ye Heithen & heare, take hede ye people. Herken thou earth & all that is therin: thou rounde compasse & all that groweth there vpon ² for the Lord is angrye with all people, & hys displeasure is kindled agaynst all the multytude of them, to curse them, & to sleye them. ³ So that their slayne shalbe cast out, and their bodyes styncke: that euen the verye hilles shalbe wet with the bloude of them. ⁴ All the starres of heauen shalbe consumed, & the heauen shall folde together lyke a roll, & all the starres therof shal fall, lyke as the leaues fall from the vynes & fygetrees. ⁵ For my swearde (saieth he) shalbe bathed in heauen, and shall immediatly come downe vpon Idumea, and vpon the people which I haue cursed for my vengeance. ⁶ And the Lordes swearde shalbe full of bloude, and be rustye wyth the fatnesse & bloude of lambes & gootes, wyth the fatnesse of the kydneys of wethers. For the Lorde shall kyl a greate offringe in Bosra, and in the lande of Idumea. ⁷ There shall the Vnycornes fall with the Bulles (that is with the gyauntes) and theyr lande shalbe washed wyth bloude, and their grounde corrupte wyth fatnesse. ⁸ Vnto the also (O Syon) shall come the daye of the vengeaunce of God, & the yeare when thyne owne iudgmentes shalbe recompensed. ⁹ Thy floudes shalbe turned to pytch, and thyne earthe to brymstone, and ther wyth shall the lande be kyndled, ¹⁰ so that it shall not be quenched daye ner nyght: But smoke euermore, and so forth to lye waste. And no man shall go thorowe thy lande for euer: ¹¹ But Pellicanes, Storkes, great Dules, and Rauens shall haue it in possessyon, and dwell therin. For God shall sprede out the lyne of desolacyon vpon it, and weye it with the stones of emptynes. ¹² When kinges are called vpon there shalbe none, and all prynces shalbe awaye. ¹³ Thornes shall growe in their palaces, nettels and thistles in theyr stronge holdes, that the dragons maye haue their pleasure therin, and that they maye be a courte for Estriches. ¹⁴ There shall straunge visures and monstruous beastes mete one another, and the wilde kepe companye together. There shall the lamya lye, and haue her lodginge. ¹⁵ There shall the hedghoge buylde, digge, be there at home, and brynge forth hys younge ones. There shall the kytes come together, ech one to his lyke. ¹⁶ Seke thorow the scrypture of the Lorde & rede it. There shall none of these thynges be left out, there shall not one (ner soche lyke) fayle. For what his mouth commaundeth, that same doth hys sprete gather together (or fulfylleth.) ¹⁷ Vpon whom soeuer the lot falleth, or to whom he dealeth it with the lyue: those shall possesse the enheritaunce from generacyon to generacyon, and dwell therin.

¹ What is he thys, that cometh from Edom, with stayned read clothes of Bolra: (whyche is so costly cloth) and cometh in so nimbly wyth all his strength: I am he that teachech ryghteousnes, and am of power to helpe. ² Wherfore then is thy clothinge reade, and thy rayment lyke his that treadeth in the wyne presse? ³ I haue troden the presse my self alone, and of al people, there was not one with me. Thus haue I troden doune myne enemyes in my wrath, and set my fete vpon them in my indignacyon. And their bloude sprange vpon my clothes, and so haue I stayned al my raiment. ⁴ For the day of vengeaunce that I haue taken in hande, and the yeare of my delyueraunce is come. ⁵ I loked aboute me, and there was noman to shewe me any helpe, I fell doune, & no man helde me vp. Then I held me by myne owne arme, and my feruentnesse susteyned me: ⁶ and thus haue I troden doune the people in my wrath, and bathed them in my displeasure: In so muche that I haue shed their bloude vpon the earth.

¹⁵ For behold the Lorde shall come with fyre, and hys charet shalbe lyke a whirle winde, that he maye recompence his vengeaunce in his wrath and hys indignacyon wt the flamme of fyre. ¹⁶ For the Lorde shall iudge all fleshe with the fyre, and with his swearde, & there shalbe a greate nombre slayne of the Lorde.

⁹ lo, I wyll sende out, call for all the people, that dwell in the North, sayeth the Lorde, and will prepayre Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babylon my seruaunt, and will bringe them vpon this lande, & vpon all that dwell therin, and vpon all the people that are aboute them, & will vtterly rote them oute. I wyll make of them a wyldernesse, a mockage and a continuall deserte.

¹⁵ For thus hath the Lord God of Israel spoken vnto me: Take this wyne cuppe of indignacion fro my hande, that thou mayeste cause al the people, to whom I sende the, for to drincke of it: ¹⁶ that when they haue drouncken therof, they may be mad, and out of their wyttes, when the swearde commeth, that I wyll sende amonge them. ¹⁷ Then toke I the cuppe from the Lordes hande, and made all the people dryncke therof, vnto whom the Lorde had sent me. ¹⁸ But fyrst the cytie of Ierusalem, and all the cytyes of Iuda, theyr kinges and princes to make them desolate, waste, despised & cursed according as it is come to passe this day. ¹⁹ Ye & Pharao the kinge of Egipt, his seruauntes, his prynces & hys people altogether one with anoth ²⁰ & al kinges of the land of Hus, al kinges of the Philistines lande, Ascalon, Azah, Accaron & the remnaunt of Asdod, ²¹ the Edomites, the Moabites & the Ammonites: ²² al the kinges of Tirus & Sidon: the kynges of the Iles, that are beyonde the se: ²³ Dedan, Thema, Buz and the shauen Ismaelites: ²⁴ all the kynges of Araby, and (generally) all the kynges that dwell in the deserte: ²⁵ all the kynges of Zamri, al the kinges of Elam, all the kynges of the Meedes, ²⁶ all kynges towarde the North, whether they be farre or nye, euery one with his neyghboures: Ye and all the kyngdomes that are vpon the whole earth. The kynge of Sezach, sayde he, shal drincke with them also. ²⁷ And saye thou vnto them: This is the commaundement of the Lorde of hostes the God of Israel: Drincke and be droncken, spewe & fall, that ye neuer ryse: and that thorow the swearde, whyche I wyll sende amonge you. ²⁸ But yf they wyl not receyue the cuppe of thy hande, and drincke it, then tell them: Thus doeth the Lord of Hostes threaten you: drinck it ye shal, and that shortly. ²⁹ For lo, I begynne to plage the cyty, that my name is geuen vnto: thynke ye then, that I will leaue you vnpunyshed? Ye shal not go quyte. For why, I call for a swearde vpon al the inhabitours of the earth, sayeth the Lord of Hostes.

¹ As concernynge the Ammonites thus the Lorde sayeth: Hath Israell no chyldren, or is he withoute an heyre? Why hath your kynge then taken Gad in? wherfore both hys people dwel in hys cities?

⁷ Vpon the Edomytes hath the Lorde of hostes spoken on thys maner: Is there no more wysdome in Theman? Is there no more good councell amonge hys people? Is theyr wysdome then turned clene to naughte? ⁸ Get you hence, turne youre backes, crepe doune into the depe, O ye cytesens of Dedan. For I wyll brynge destruccyon vpon Esau yea and the daye of hys visitacion. ⁹ If the grape gatherers came vpon the, shuld they not leaue some grapes? If the nyghte robbers came vpon the, shulde they not take so muche as they thoughte were ynough? ¹⁰ But I wyll make Esau bare, and discouer hys secretes, so that he shall not be able to hyde them. Hys sede shalbe wasted awaye, yea hys brethren and his neyghbours, and he him selfe shall not be lefte behynde. ¹¹ Thou shalte leaue thy fatherlesse chyldren behynde the, and I wyll kepe them and thy wydowes shall take theyr comforte in me. ¹² For thus hath the Lorde spoken: Beholde, they that men thought were vnmete to drinke of the cuppe, haue dronken with the firste: and thynkest thou then to be fre? No, no: thou shalt neyther be quyte nor fre but thou muste drincke also: ¹³ For why, I haue sworne by my selfe (sayeth the Lord) that Bozrah shal become a wyldernes, an open shame a laughynge stocke and cursynge: and her cytyes shalbe a continuall deserte. ¹⁴ For I am perfectly infourmed of the Lord, that he hath sente a message all readye vnto the Heathen. Gather you together, and go forthe agaynste them: make you readye to the battayle: ¹⁵ for lo, I wyll make the but smal among the Heathen, and lytle regarded among men. ¹⁶ Thy hye stomack & the pryde of thy herte haue disceyued the, because thou wylte dwell in the holes of stony rockes, and haue the hye mountaines in possessyon. Neuertheles though thy neste were as hye as the Aegles, yet will I caste the doune, sayeth the Lorde. ¹⁷ Moreouer Idumea shall be a wyldernesse: who so goeth by it, shalbe abashed, & wodre at all her myserable plages. ¹⁸ Lyke as Sodome Gomor, and the cytyes that laye there about, were turned vp syde doune (sayeth the Lorde) so shall no bodye dwell in Idumea, & no man shall haue hys habytacyon there. ¹⁹ Beholde, lyke as the Lyon commeth vp from the pleasaunt medowes of Iordane vnto the grene pastures of Etham, so wyll I dryue hym, and make hym runne agaynste her. But who is the yongeman that I wyll ordeyne thereto? Who is lyke vnto me? What is he that wyll stryue wyth me? What shepherde may stande in my handes? ²⁰ Therfore heare the councell of the Lorde, that he hathe taken vpon Idumea: and hys purpose that he hath deuised vpon the cytesyns of Theman: The least of the flocke shall teare them in peces, and loke what faire thing they haue, they shall make it waste, & them selues also. ²¹ At the noyse of their fall the earthe shall quake, the crie of their voyce shalbe hearde vnto the red sea. ²² Beholde, the enemye shall come & fle vp hyther, lyke as it were an Aegle, and sprede his winges vpon Bozrah. Then shall the hertes of the worthyes in Edom be as the herte of a woman trauailinge of childe.

¹¹ because ye were so chearfull and glad, to treade doune myne heritage, and fulfylled youre pleasures, as the calues in the grasse: and triumphed ouer them lyke the bulles, when ye had gotten the victory.

²¹ Sin. And thou (O daughter Edom) that dwellest in the lande of Huz, be glad and reioyce: for the cuppe shall come vnto the also, which whan thou soppest of thou shalt be droncken.

⁸ Thus sayeth the Lorde God: For so much as Moab and Seir do say: As for the house of Iuda, it is but lyke as all other Gentyles be. ⁹ Therfore beholde, I will make the cytyes of Moab weapenlesse, and take awaye their strength: thir cyties and chefe coastes of their lande, whiche are the pleasures of the countrey. As namelye: Bethiesimoth, Baalmeon and Cariathaim: ¹⁰ these will I open vnto them of the East, that they maye fall vpon the Ammonites: and wil geue it them in possession, so that the Ammonites shall no more be had in remembraunce amonge the Heathen. ¹¹ Euen thus will I punishe Moab also, that they may knowe, how that I am the Lorde. ¹² Moreouer, thus sayeth the Lorde God: Because that Edom hath auenged and eased him selfe vpon the house of Iuda, ¹³ therefore thus sayeth the Lorde: I wyll reache oute myne hande vpon Edom, and take awaye man and beast oute of it. From Theman vnto Dedan will I make it desolate, they shalbe slayne wt the swearde. ¹⁴ Thorowe my people of Israell will I auenge me agayne vpon Edom: they shall handle him, accordinge to my wrath & indignacion, so that they shall know my vengeaunce, sayeth the Lorde God. ¹⁵ Thus sayeth the Lorde God: For so much as the Philistines haue done this, namely taken vengeaunce with despitefully stomackes and of an olde euyl will set them selues to destroye.

¹ Moreouer, the worde of the lorde came vnto me, sayinge: ² Thou sonne of man, turne thy face towarde the mounte Seir, prophecye vpon it, ³ & say vnto it: Thus sayeth the Lord God Beholde (O thou mount Seir) I wil vpon the, I wyl reache out myne hande ouer the, yea waste and desolate will I make the. ⁴ Thy cytyes wyll I breake doune: and thou shalte lye voyde, that thou mayest knowe, how that I am the Lord. ⁵ For so much as thou beareste an olde enemyte agaynst the chyldren of Israel, and with a cruell hande haste made them afrayed, what tyme as they were troubled and punyshed for theyr synne: ⁶ Therfore as truelye as I lyue, sayeth the Lord GOD, I wyl prepare the vnto bloud, yea bloude shall folowe vpon the: seyng thou layest wayte for bloude, therfore shal bloude persecute the. ⁷ Thus wyll I make the mounte Seir desolate and waste, and brynge to passe, that there shal no man goo thyther, ner com from thence. ⁸ Hys mountaynes wyll I fyll wyth hys slayne men: thy hylles, dales and valleys shall lye full of them, that are slayne with the swearde. ⁹ I wyll make the a perpetuall wyldernesse, so that no man shall dwell in thy cyties: that ye maye knowe, how that I am the Lorde. ¹⁰ And because thou hast sayd: what, both these nacyons and both these landes must be myne, & I wyll haue them in possession, where as the Lorde was there. Therfore, thus sayeth the Lorde God: ¹¹ As trulye as I lyue, I wyll handle the accordynge to thy wrath and gelousy, lyke as thou hast dealt cruellye with them: that I maye be knowen amonge them, how I haue punished the. ¹² Yee and that thou also mayest be sure, that I the Lord haue hearde all thy despytefull wordes, whiche thou hast spoken agaynst the mountaynes of Israel, sayinge: Lo, they are made waste, & geuen vs to deuoure. ¹³ Thus wyth youre mouthes ye haue mayde youre boost agaynst me, yee & multyplyed youre proude wordes agaynst me, which I haue hearde altogether. ¹⁴ Wher vnto thus sayeth the Lorde God: when the whole worlde is in wealth, then wyll I make the waste. ¹⁵ And like as thou (O mount Seyr) wast glad, because the heretage of the house of Israell was destroyed: euen so wyll I do vnto the also that thou & whole Edom shall be destroyed, and knowe, that I am the Lorde.

³ prophecye therfore, and speake: thus sayeth the Lorde God: Seynge ye be wasted & troden downe on euery syde, and become a possessyon vnto the resydue of the Gentyles, whych haue brought you in to mens mouthes & vnto an euell name amonge the people:

¹⁹ For in my gelousy and hote dyspleasure I haue deuysed, that there shalbe a greate trouble in the land of Israel at that tyme.

¹¹ Thus sayth the Lorde: For thre and foure wickednesses of Edom I wyl not spare him, because he persecuted hys brother wyth the swearde, destroyed his mothers wombe, bare hatred very longe, and so kepte indignacyon alwaye by hym. ¹² Therfore wyll I sende a fyre into Theman, which shal deuoure the palaces of Bosra.

¹ Thys is the vysyon that was shewed vnto Abdy: Thus hath the Lorde God spoken vpon Edom: We haue hearde of the Lord that there is an embassage sent amonge the Heathen: Vp, let vs aryse, and fyght agaynst them. ² Beholde, I wyll make the small amonge the Heathen, so that thou shalt be vtterly despysed. ³ The pryde of thyne herte hath lyft the vp, thou that dwellest in the stronge holdes of stone, & haste made the an hye seate: Thou sayest in thyne hert: who shall cast me downe to the grounde? ⁴ But though thou wentest vp as hye as the Aegle, and maydest thy nest aboue amonge the starres: yet wylde I plucke the downe from thence. ⁵ Yf the theues and robbers came to the by nyght, thou takinge thy reste: shulde they not steale, tyll they had ynough? Yf the grape gatherers came vpon the, wolde they not leaue the some grapes? ⁶ But how shall they rype Esau, and seke out hys treasures? ⁷ Yee the men that were sworne vnto the, shall dryue the out of the borders of thyne owne lande. They that be now at one wyth the, shall dysceyue the, & ouercome the: Euen they that eate thy bread, shall betraye the, or euer thou perceyue it. ⁸ Shall not I at the same tyme destroye the wyse men of Edom, & those that haue vnderstandynge, from the mount of Esau? ⁹ Thy gyauntes (O Theman) shalbe afrayed, for thorow the slaughter they shalbe all ouerthrowne vpon the mount of Esau.

¹² Thou shalt nomore se the daye of thy brother, thou shalt nomore beholde the tyme of hys captiuite: thou shalt nomore reioyse ouer the chyldren of Iuda, in the daye of their destruccyon, thou shalt tryumphe nomore in the tyme of their trouble.

⁸ O thou enemye of myne, reioyce not at my fal, for I shal get vp agayne: and thoughe I syt in my darckenesse, yet the Lorde is my lyght.

⁸ I haue heard the despyte of Moab, & the blasphemyes of the chyldren of Ammon, howe they haue shamefullye intreated my people, and magnifyed them selues wythin the borders of theyr lande. ⁹ Therfore as truely as I lyue (sayeth the Lorde of hostes the God of Israel) Moab shalbe as Sodome, & Ammon as Gomorra: euen drye thorne hedges, salt pyttes and a perpetual wyldernes. The resydue of my folcke shall spoyle them the remnaunte of my people shall haue them in possession. ¹⁰ This shal happen vnto them for their pryde, because they haue dealte so shamefullye wyth the Lorde of hostes people, and magnified themselues aboue them.

⁸ Therfore ye shall wayte vpon me (sayeth the Lord) vntil the tyme that I stand vp: for I am determed, to gather the people & to bring the kingedoms together, that I may poure oute myne anger, yea, al my wrothfull displeasure vpon them. For all the worlde shalbe consumed wyth the fyre of my gelousy.

¹⁵ and sore dyspleased at the carelesse Heathen: for where as I was but a lytle angrye, they dyd theyr best that I myghte destroye them.

² I haue loued you, sayeth the Lord: and yet ye say: wherin haste thou loued vs? Was not Esau Iacobs brother, sayeth the Lord? yet haue I loued Iacob, ³ & hated Esau: yea I haue made his hilles waste, & his heretage a wildernesse for dragons: ⁴ & though Edom sayd: wel, we are destroyed, we wyll go buylde vp agayne the places that be wasted: yet (sayeth the Lord of hostes) what they buylded, that brake I domie, so that is was called a cursed lande, and a people, whom the Lorde hath euer bene angrye withall.
