¹ And he commaunded the ruler of his house saying: fyl the mens sackes with food, as moche as they can carye, ² and put euery mans moneye in hys bagge mouth, & put my syluer cuppe in the sackes mouthe of the yongest and his corne money also. And he dyd as Ioseph had sayd. ³ And in the mornyng as soone as it was lyghte, the men were let go with their asses. ⁴ And when they were oute of the cytie & not yet farre away, Ioseph said vnto the ruelar of his house: vp and folowe after the men and ouertake them, and say vnto them: wherfore haue ye rewarded euel for good? ⁵ is that not the cuppe of which my Lord drynketh, and doth he not prophesye therin? ye haue euel done, that ye haue done. ⁶ And he ouertoke them and sayde the same wordes vnto them. ⁷ And they answered him: wherfore sayth my Lord soch wordes? God forbyd that thy seruauntes should do so. ⁸ Beholde, the money whyche we founde in oure sackes mouthes, we brought agayne vnto the, oute of the lande of Canaan: howe then shuld we steale out of my lordes house, ether siluer or gold? ⁹ with whom soeuer of thy seruauntes it be founde let him dye, and let vs, also be my Lordes bondmen. ¹⁰ And he sayde: Now therfore acording vnto your woordes, he wt whom it is found, shalbe my seruaunte: but ye shalbe harmelesse. ¹¹ And attonce euery man toke doune hys sacke to the grounde, and euery man opened hys sacke. ¹² And he serched, and began at the eldest and left at the yongest. And the cuppe was founde in Beuiamins sacke. ¹³ Then they rent their clothes, and laded euery man hys asse and went agayne vnto the cytie. ¹⁴ And Iuda and hys brethren came to Iosephes house, for he was yet there, and they fel before hym on the grounde. ¹⁵ And Ioseph sayde vnto them: what dede is thys which ye haue done? wyst ye not that soche a man as I can prophesye? ¹⁶ Then sayde Iuda: what shall we saye vnto my Lorde, what shall we speake or what excuse can we make? God hath founde out the wekednesse of thy seruauntes. Behold, both we and he wt whom the cuppe is founde, are thy seruauntes. ¹⁷ And he answered: God forbyd that I should do so, the man wt whom the cuppe is found, he shalbe my seruaunte: but go ye in peace vnto your father. ¹⁸ Then Iuda went vnto hym and sayde: oh my Lorde, let thy seruaunte speake a worde in my Lordes eare, and be not wrouth wyth thy seruaunte: for thou art euen as Pharao. ¹⁹ My Lord axed hys seruaunte sayinge: haue ye a father or a brother? ²⁰ And we answered my Lord, we haue a father that is olde, & a yonge lad which he begat in his age: and the brother of the sayd lad is dead, & he is al that is left of that mother. And his father loueth him. ²¹ Then sayde my Lorde vnto hys seruauntes brynge hym vnto me, that I maye set myne eyes vpon hym. ²² And we answered my Lorde, that the lad coulde not goo from hys father, for yf he shoulde leaue hys father, he were but a deed man. ²³ Than saydest thou vnto thy seruauntes excepte youre yongest brother come wyth you, loke that ye se my face no moare. ²⁴ And when we came vnto thy seruaunt our father, we shewed hym what my Lorde had sayde. ²⁵ And when oure father sayde vnto vs, goo agayne and bye vs a lytle fode: ²⁶ we sayde, that we coulde not goo. Neuerthelesse yf oure yongest brother go with vs then wyl we go, for we maye not see the mannes face excepte oure youngest brother be wt vs. ²⁷ Then sayde thy seruaunt oure father vnto vs. Ye knowe that my wyfe bare me two sonnes. ²⁸ And the one went out from me and it is sayde of a suertye that he is torne in peaces of wyld beastes, and I sawe him not sence. ²⁹ If ye shall take thys also awaye from me and some mysfortune happen vpon him, then shall ye bryng my gray head with sorow vnto the graue. ³⁰ Now therfore when I come to thy seruaunt my father, yf the lad be not with me: seyinge that hys lyfe hangeth by the laddes lyfe, ³¹ then as soone as he seeth that the lad is not come, he wyll dye. So shall we thy seruauntes brynge the gray hedde of thy seruaunt oure father wyth sorow vnto the graue. ³² For I thy seruaunt became suerty for the lad vnto my father and sayde: yf I brynge hym not vnto the agayne. I wyll bere the blame all my lyfe longe. ³³ Nowe therfore let me thy seruaunt byde here for the lad, and be my Lordes bondman: and let the lad goo home with hys brethren. ³⁴ For howe can I goo vnto my father, and the lad not wyth me: lest I shulde sea the wretchednes that shall come on my father.

² And he sayd vnto his eldest seruaunte of hys house whyche had the rule ouer al that he had Put thy hand vnder my they

²⁵ & commaunded to fyl their sackes wyth corne, and to put euery mans money in his sacke, and to geue them vitayle to spende by the waye. And so it was done to them.

² And when they had eaten vp the corne which they brought out of the lande of Egypt, their father sayde vnto them: go agayn and by vs a lytle food.

¹⁶ When Ioseph sawe BenIamin with them, he sayde to the ruelar of his house: brynge these men home & sley and make redy: for they shal dyne with me at none.

¹⁹ Therfore came they to the man that was the ruelar ouer Iosephes house, & comened with him at the door

¹ Euen so shall the Lorde of Hostes take awaye from Ierusalem & Iuda, all possessyons and power, al meate and drincke,

¹⁵ Here by ye shall be proued. For by the lyfe of Pharao, ye shall not go hence, vntyll your yongest brother be come hither. ¹⁶ Sende therfore one of you and let him fet your brother, and ye shalbe in preyson in the meane season. And thereby shall youre wordes be proued, whether there be any trueth in you: or els by the lyfe of Pharao, ye are but spies

²⁰ and brynge youre yongest brother vnto me: that youre wordes maye be beleued, and that ye dye not. And they dyd so.

³² And they prepared for hym by hym selfe, & for them by them selues, & for the Egipcians the Egypcians may not eate bread wyth the Hebrues, for that is an abhominacion vnto the Egypcians.

² And thinke on all the waye whych the lord thy God ledde the this .xl. yere in the wildernesse, for to humble the and to proue the, to wete what was in in thyne herte, whether thou wouldest kepe his commaundements or no,

¹⁶ which fed the in the wildernes with Manna whereof thy fathers knewe not for to humble the and to proue the, that he myght do the good at thy later ende.

³ herken not vnto the wordes of the prophete, or dreamer of dreames. For the Lord thy God tempteth you to wete whether ye loue the Lord your God wt all youre hertes & wyth all your soules.

¹⁶ Beholde I sende you forth as shepe among wolues. Be ye therfore wyse as serpentes, and innocent as doues.

⁸ Thys saye I not as commaundyng: but because other are so feruente, therfore proue I youre loue, whether it be perfecte or no.

¹⁶ And as soone as al the men of warre were consumed & dead from among the people,

¹⁷ and sayde to Dauid: thou art ryghteouser then I, for thou hast rewarde me wyth good, and I haue rewarded the with euyl.

¹¹ And se, how they reward vs, to come for to cast vs oute of thy possession whyche thou hast possessed vs with al.

¹² They rewarde me euell for good, too the great discomforte of my soule.

⁵ Thus they reward me euel for good, and hatred for my god wyll.

¹³ Who so rewardeth euell for good, the plage shall not departe frome hys house.

³² Iesus aunswered them: manye good workes haue I shewed you from my father: for whiche of them wyll ye stone me?

²⁷ Then sayd Laban vnto hym: If I haue founde fauoure in thy syght (for I suppose that the Lorde hath blessed me for thy sake)

²⁶ Ye shall eate nothynge wyth the bloude, ye shall vse no wytchcrafte, nor obserue dysmall dayes,

¹⁰ Let ther not be founde among you that maketh hys sonne or daughter to go thorow the fyre, or that vseth withcrafte, or a choser out of dayes or that regardeth the flieng of foules, ¹¹ or a sorcerar, or a charmar, or that counceleth with spretes, or a propheciar or that asketh the aduyse of the dead, ¹² for al that do such thyngs are abhominacion vnto the Lorde: and because of these abhominacions the Lord thy God doeth cast them out before the, ¹³ be pure therfore wyth the Lorde thy God. ¹⁴ For these nacions which thou shalt conquere, herken vnto chosers out of dayes and prophecyars. But the Lorde thy God permytteth not that to the.

³³ And they toke that word for good lucke and hastely caught it out of hys mouth and sayde? ye thy brother Benhadad. Then he sayde: go and brynge hym. And Benhadad came out to hym, and the other toke him vp into the charet.

⁶ And he offered his sonne in fyre, and obserued dismall dayes, and vsed witchcrafte and maintened workers wyth spirites, and tellers of fortuners: and wrought muche wyckednesse in the syght of the Lorde to angre hym.

²⁵ And the thyrd day when it was paynfull to them .ij. two of the sons of Iacob Simeon, & Leuy Dinas brethren, toke either of them his swerd & went into the citye boldly, & slewe al that was male, ²⁶ and slewe also Hemor and Sichem his sonne wt the edge of the swerde, and toke Dina their syster oute of Sichems house, and went theyr way. ²⁷ Then came the sonnes of Iacob vpon the dead, & spoyled the city, bicause they had defyled theyr syster: ²⁸ and toke theyr shepe, oxen asses and what so euer was in the citye, and also in the fyeldes. ²⁹ And all theyr goodes, all theyr chyldren, and theyr wyues toke they captiue and made hauocke of al that was in the houses. ³⁰ And Iacob sayd to Simeon and Leui: ye haue troubled me and made me stincke vnto the inhabitours of the Lande, boeth to the Canaanites and also vnto the Pherezites. And I am a fewe in numbre. Wherefore they shal gather them selues togyther against me & slee me, & so shal I and my house be destroied. ³¹ And they answered: shold they deale with our sister as wyth an whore.

²² And it chaunced as Israel dwelt in that lande, that Ruben went & laye wyth Bilha hys fathers concubyne, and it came to Israels eare. The sonnes of Iacob were .xij. in numbre.

¹⁸ And when they sawe him a farre of before he came at them, they toke councell agaynst him, for to sley him, ¹⁹ and sayd one to another, Beholde thys dreamer cometh, ²⁰ come nowe and let vs sley hym and caste hym in to some pytt, and let vs saye that some wycked beast hath deuoured him, and let vs see what hys dreames wyl come to. ²¹ When Ruben herde that, he went aboute to ryd hym out of their handes and sayd, let vs not kyl hym. ²² And Ruben sayde moreouer vnto them, shede not his bloud, but cast him in to this pytt that is in the wyldernes, and laye no handes vpon him: for he wolde haue rydd hym out of their handes and delyuered him to his father agayn. ²³ And as soone as Ioseph was come vnto hys brethren, they strypte hym oute of hys gay coote that was vpon hym, ²⁴ and they toke hym and caste hym in to a pyt: But the pyt was emptie and had no water therein. ²⁵ And they satt them doune to eate breade. And as they lyft vp their eyes and loked aboute, there came a companye of Ismaelites from Gilead, and their camels laden wyth spicery baulme, and myrre, and were goynge doune into Egypte. ²⁶ Than sayde Iuda to hys brethren, what auayleth it that we sley oure brother, & kepe hys bloude secret? ²⁷ come on, let vs sell hym to the Ismaelites, & let not our handes be defyled vpon him: for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. ²⁸ Than as the Madianites marchaunt men passed by, they drewe Ioseph out of the pyt & solde hym vnto the Ismaelites for .xx. peces of syluer. And they brought him into Egypte. ²⁹ And when Ruben came agayne vnto the pyt and found not Ioseph there, he rent hys cloothes ³⁰ and went agayne vnto his brethren saying: the lad is not yonder, & whether shall I go? ³¹ And they toke Ioseps coote and kylled a goote, & dypped the coote in the bloud. ³² And they sent that gay coote and caused it to be brought vnto their father and sayde: Thys haue we founde: se, whether it be thy sonnes coote or no.

¹⁶ And turned to her vnto the waye and sayde, come I praye the, let me lye wyth the, for he knewe not that it was his daughter in lawe. And she sayd what wylt thou geue me for to lye wt me? ¹⁷ Than sayde he, I wyl sende the a kydd from the flocke. She answered, Than geue me a pledge tyl thou send it. ¹⁸ Than sayde he, what pledge shall I geue the? And she sayde: thy sygnet, thy bracelet, and thy staffe that is in thy hande. And he gaue it her & lay by her, & she was whith childe by him.

²² The myghtye God Iehouah he knoweth, and Israel shall knowe yf it be to rebelle or transgresse agaynste the Lorde, then the Lorde saue vs not thys daye. ²³ Or els yf we haue buylt vs an aulter to tourne from folowynge the Lorde, or to offer thereon burntofferynge or meate offerynges, or to offer peace offerynges thereon: let the Lorde requyre it: ²⁴ And haue not rather done it for feare of thys: least in tyme to come youre chyldren shulde saye vnto oures: what haue ye to do wyth the Lorde God of Israel, seynge: ²⁵ that the Lorde hath made Iordan a border betwene vs and you ye chyldren of Ruben & of Gad: ye haue no parte therfore in the Lorde: and so shall youre chyldren make our chyldren cease from fearynge the Lorde. ²⁶ And therfore we sayde: Let vs cause an aulter to be made, not for burntofferynges, nor sacryfyces, ²⁷ but it shalbe a wytnesse betwene vs, and you and oure generacyons after vs, that we shulde serue the Lorde, wyth our offerynges, sacryfyces and peace offerynges: and that youre chyldren shulde not say to oures in tyme to come, ye haue no parte in the Lorde. ²⁸ And we thought yf they shuld so say to vs or to oure generacyons in tyme to come, that we wolde saye agayne: Beholde the fashyon of the aulter which our fathers made, neither for burntofferynges nor sacryfyces, but that it shulde be a wytnesse betwene vs and you ²⁹ God forbydde that we shulde rebell agaynst the Lorde, and that we shulde turne this day from after him, and buyld an aulter for burntofferynges or sacryfyces, saue the aultare of the Lorde, oure God that is before hys tabernacle.

²⁰ And Ioab answered and sayde: God forbid, God forbid it me, that I should eyther deuoure or destroye it.

¹³ And Hazael sayde: what is thy seruaunte which am but a dogge, that I shulde do thys great thyng? And Elizeus sayde: for the Lord hath shewed me, that thou shalte be kynge of Syrya.

¹ A good name is more worthe then greate ryches. and louyng fauoure is better then siluer and golde.

¹ A good name is more worth then a precious oyntemente, and the day of death is better then the daye of byrthe.

¹⁸ Praye for vs. We haue confydence because we haue a good conscience in all thynges, and desyre to lyue honestlye.

²¹ Than they sayde one to another: we haue verely synned agaynst oure brother, in that we sawe the anguysh of hys soull when he besought vs, & wold not heare him: therfore is thys troubyll come vpon vs.

²⁷ And as one of them opened hys sacke, for to geue hys asse prouender in the Inne, he spyed hys money in hys sacks mouth.

³⁵ And as they emptied their sackes, behold: euery mans bundel of money was in his sacke. And when both they & their father sawe the bundels of money, they were afrayde.

¹² And take as moch money more wyth you. And the money that was brought agayne in youre sackes, take it agayn with you, peraduenture it was som ouersyghte.

²¹ & as we came to an inne and opened oure sackes: beholde, euery mannes money was in his sacke with full weyghte: But we haue brought it agayne with vs, ²² and other mony haue we brought also in oure handes, to bye foode, but we can not tel who put our money in oure sackes.

⁷ And they answered him: wherfore sayth my Lord soch wordes? God forbyd that thy seruauntes should do so.

¹⁸ The other sayd to him: Which And Iesus sayde: Breake no wedloke, kyll not, steale not: beare not false witues,

⁹ For these commaundementes Thou shalte not commyt aduoutrye: Thou shalte not kyll: Thou shalt not steale: Thou shalte not beare false wytnesse: Thou shalte not desyre: and so forth (yf there be anye other commaundente) they are all comprehended in thys saiynge: Loue thyne neyghboure as thy selfe.

¹⁰ Whosoeuer shall kepe the whole lawe, and yet fayle in one point he is gyltye in all. ¹¹ For he that sayde: Thou shalte not committe adultery, sayed also, thou shalte not kyll. Thoughe thou do none adulterye: yet yf thou kyll, thou arte a transgresser of the lawe.

³² But with whomesoeuer thou findest thy Gods, let hym dye here before our brethren. Seke that thyne is by me, & take it to the: for Iacob wist not that Rahel had stolen them.

¹⁸ When they were brought to Iosephs house, they were afrayde and sayde: because of the money that came in oure sackes mouthes at the fyrst tyme, are we brought, to pyke a quarell with vs and to laye some thynge to oure charge to bryng vs in bondage and our asses also.

¹⁶ Then sayde Iuda: what shall we saye vnto my Lorde, what shall we speake or what excuse can we make? God hath founde out the wekednesse of thy seruauntes. Behold, both we and he wt whom the cuppe is founde, are thy seruauntes.

³⁸ But yf case be that my lande crye againste me, or that the forowes therof make any complainte: ³⁹ yf I haue eaten the frutes therof vnpaied for, yea yf I haue greued any of the plow men: ⁴⁰ then let thystles growe in steade of my wheate, and thornes for my barleye. Here ende the wordes of Iob.

³ O Lorde my God, if I haue done anye suche thyng, if there be any vnrightuousnes in my handes: ⁴ If I haue rewarded euyl vnto them that dealt frendly wyth me, or hurt them that wyth out any cause are myne enemies. ⁵ Then let myne enemye persecute my soule, and take mo: ye let hym treade my life downe in the earth, and laye myne honour in the dust. Selah.

¹¹ Yf I haue hurte them, or committed anye thinge worthye of deathe, I refuse not to dye. Yf none of these thinges are, wherof they accuse me, no man ought to deliuer me to them. I appeale vnto Cesar.

³³ Nowe therfore let me thy seruaunt byde here for the lad, and be my Lordes bondman: and let the lad goo home with hys brethren.

³ excepte the sunne be vp when he is founde, then there shalbe bloude shed for hym. A thefe shall make restitucion: If he haue not wherwith, he shalbe solde for hys thefte.

²⁴ And when he had begon to recken: one was broughte vnto hym: which ought hym ten thousand talentes, ²⁵ whome because he had noughte to paye, hys master commaunded him to be solde, and his wyfe, and hys chyldren, and all that he had, & payment to be made.

³⁶ And Iacob their father said vnto them: Me haue ye robbed of my chyldren: Ioseph is away, and Symeon is awaye, and ye wyll take Ben Iamin awaye. All these thynges fall vpon me. ³⁷ Ruben answered hys father sayinge: Slee my two sonnes, yf I brynge him not to the agayn. Delyuer hym therfore to my hande, and I wyll brynge hym to the agayne: ³⁸ And he sayde: my sonne shall not go doune wyth you. For his brother is dead, & he is left alone. Moreouer some mysfortune myght happen vpon him by the way whych ye go. And so shuld ye bring my gray head with sorowe vnto the graue.

¹⁴ And God almightye geue you mercy in the syghte of the man and send you youre other brother and also BenIamin, and I wylbe as a man robbed of his chyldren.

³³ And they sat before hym: the eldest acordynge vnto hys age, and the yongest accordyng vnto his youth. And the men marueled among them selues.

⁶ And Iosua the sonne of Nun, & caleb the sonne of Iephune whych were of them that serched the land rent their clothes

² Beholde, there came a man the thyrde daye out of the hoste from Saul wyth his clothes rent & earth vpon hys head. And when he came to Dauid, he fell to the earthe, & dyd obeysaunce.

¹¹ Then Dauid toke hys clothes and rente them, and so dyd all the men that were wyth hym.

¹⁹ And Thamar put asshes on her head and rent her gaye kyrtell that was on her, & put her hande on her head & so went, & as she wente, cryed.

⁷ Beholde we were makynge sheues in the field: & lo, my sheffe arose and stode vpryght, & youres stode round aboute and made obeysaunce to my shefe. ⁸ Than sayd hys brethren vnto hym: what, shalt thou be our kyng or shalt thou reygne ouer vs? And they hated him yet the more, because of hys dreame and of hys wordes. ⁹ And he dreamed yet another dreame & told it his brethren sayinge: beholde, I haue had one dreame more: me thought the sonne and the moone and .xi. starres made obeysaunce to me. ¹⁰ And when he had told it vnto his father and his brethren, hys father rebuked hym & sayde vnto him: what meaneth this dreame which thou hast dreamed: shal I and thy mother and thy brethren come and fall on the grounde before the?

²⁵ And they made redy their present against Ioseph came at none, for they herde say that they shuld dyne there.

¹⁸ And his brethren came and fel before hym and sayd: beholde we be thy seruauntes.

¹⁰ that in the name of Iesus should euerye knee bowe, both of thinges in heauen and thinges in earth, and thinges vnder the earth, ¹¹ and that al tounges should confesse that Iesus Christ is the Lorde vnto the prayse of God the father.

¹³ And the Lorde God sayd vnto the woman: Wherfore dydest thou so? And the woman answered: The serpent deceyued me and I ate.

¹⁰ And he sayde: What hast thou done? The voyce of thy brothers bloude cryeth vnto me oute of the erth.

²⁶ And Abimelech answered I wyst not who dyd it: Also thou toldest me not, nether herde I of it, but thys daye.

⁸ But he denyed & sayde to her: Beholde, my master woteth not what he hath in the house wt me, but hath commytted all that he hath to my hande.

¹⁸ And when they sawe him a farre of before he came at them, they toke councell agaynst him, for to sley him, ¹⁹ and sayd one to another, Beholde thys dreamer cometh, ²⁰ come nowe and let vs sley hym and caste hym in to some pytt, and let vs saye that some wycked beast hath deuoured him, and let vs see what hys dreames wyl come to. ²¹ When Ruben herde that, he went aboute to ryd hym out of their handes and sayd, let vs not kyl hym. ²² And Ruben sayde moreouer vnto them, shede not his bloud, but cast him in to this pytt that is in the wyldernes, and laye no handes vpon him: for he wolde haue rydd hym out of their handes and delyuered him to his father agayn. ²³ And as soone as Ioseph was come vnto hys brethren, they strypte hym oute of hys gay coote that was vpon hym, ²⁴ and they toke hym and caste hym in to a pyt: But the pyt was emptie and had no water therein. ²⁵ And they satt them doune to eate breade. And as they lyft vp their eyes and loked aboute, there came a companye of Ismaelites from Gilead, and their camels laden wyth spicery baulme, and myrre, and were goynge doune into Egypte. ²⁶ Than sayde Iuda to hys brethren, what auayleth it that we sley oure brother, & kepe hys bloude secret? ²⁷ come on, let vs sell hym to the Ismaelites, & let not our handes be defyled vpon him: for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. ²⁸ Than as the Madianites marchaunt men passed by, they drewe Ioseph out of the pyt & solde hym vnto the Ismaelites for .xx. peces of syluer. And they brought him into Egypte.

²¹ Than they sayde one to another: we haue verely synned agaynst oure brother, in that we sawe the anguysh of hys soull when he besought vs, & wold not heare him: therfore is thys troubyll come vpon vs. ²² Ruben answered them sayinge: sayd I not vnto you that ye shulde not synne agaynst the lad? but ye wolde not heare. And nowe verely see, hys bloud is requyred.

⁸ Than sayd Iuda vnto Israel his father: Send the lad with me, and we wyll ryse and go, that we maye lyue and not dye: both we, thou and also oure chyldren. ⁹ I wylbe suerty for him, & of my handes requyre him. If I bryng him not to the and set hym before thyne eyes, than let me bere the blame for euer.

⁹ with whom soeuer of thy seruauntes it be founde let him dye, and let vs, also be my Lordes bondmen.

³² For I thy seruaunt became suerty for the lad vnto my father and sayde: yf I brynge hym not vnto the agayne. I wyll bere the blame all my lyfe longe.

²³ But and yf ye wyl not do so, behold, ye synne agaynst the Lord: and be sure your synne wyll fynde you out.

¹ If there be strife betwene men let them com vnto the law, & let the iudges iustifie the righteous & condemne the trespaser.

¹ But yet the children of Israel trespased in the excommunicate thinges for Acan the sonne of Carmi, the sonne of Zabdi, the sonne of Zareh of the trybe of Iuda, toke of the excommunicate thinges. And the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote agaynst the chyldren of Israel.

¹⁸ And he brought hys housholde man by man, and Acan the sonne of Carmy, the sonne of Zabdi, the sonne of Zareh in the trybe of Iuda was caught.

⁷ Then Adonibezek sayd: thre score & .x. kynges hauynge theyr thombes & greate toes cut of, gathered theyr meate vnder my table: wherfore as I haue done so, God hath done to me agayne. And they brought him to Ierusalem and there he dyed.

¹⁰ And now O our God, what shall we say after thys? for we haue forsaken thy commaundementes,

¹⁵ O Lorde God of Israell, thou arte ryghteous, for we remayne yet escaped, as it is thys daye. Beholde in thy presence are we in oure trespace, for because of it is there no standynge before the.

⁴ Beholde, I am to vyle a personne, to aunswere the, therfore wyll I laye my hand vpon my mouth.

¹⁵ The Lord hateth as wel hym that iustifyeth the vngodly, as him that condemneth the innocent,

¹⁷ He that by vyolence sheddeth anye mannes bloude, shall be a rennagate vnto his graue, and no man shall be able to succoure hym.

³ I shewe you nowe my cause (O ye Cytesens of Ierusalem & whole Iuda:) Iudge I praye you betwixte me, & my vyneyarde.

⁹ And therfor shall the iniquite of Iacob be thus reconcyled. And so shall he take away all the frute of hys sinnes. As for aulter stones, he shall make them all as stones beaten to poulder: the groues & Idols shall not stande.

⁷ O Lorde, ryghteousnesse belongeth vnto the, vnto vs pertayneth nothynge but open shame, as it is come to passe this day vnto euery man of Iuda and to them that dwell at Ierusalem: Yea, vnto all Israell, whether they be farre or nye thorow out all landes: wherin thou haste strowed them, because of the offences that they had done agaynst the.

² For as ye iudge so, shall ye be iudged. And with what measur ye meate, with the same shal it be measured to you agayne.

² For there is nothynge couered the shall not be vncouered: neyther hydde, that shall not be knowen.

³⁷ When they hearde this, they were prycked in their hertes, and sayd vnto Peter and vnto the other Apostles. Ye men and brethren, what shall we do?

²⁵ That be farre from the, that thou shuldest do after this maner, to sley the rightwes wt the wicked, & that the rightwes shuld be as the wicked: that be farre from the. Shulde not the iudge of all the worlde do acordynge to ryghte?

²⁹ that thou shouldest do vs no hurt, as we haue not touched the, and haue done vnto the nothynge but good, & sent the away in peace: for thou art nowe the blessed of the Lorde.

³² And they sent that gay coote and caused it to be brought vnto their father and sayde: Thys haue we founde: se, whether it be thy sonnes coote or no. ³³ And he knewe it sayinge: it is my sonnes coote, a wicked beast hath deuoured hym, and Ioseph is rent in peces.

¹⁸ And Ioseph said vnto them the thyrd day: Thys do and lyue, for I feare God.

³ The God of Israel spake vnto me, and the strength of Israel sayde, he that beareth rule ouer men, he that ruleth iustly in the feare of God.

² When I maye get a conuenyent tyme, I shall iudge accordyng vnto ryght.

³⁰ And he sayde: O let not my Lorde be angry, that I speake. What yf there be founde .xxx. there? And he sayde: I wyll not do it, yf I fynde .xxx. there.

³² And he sayde: O let not my Lorde be angrye, that I speake yet, but euen once more oulye. What yf ten be found there? And he sayde: I wyll not destroy them for .x. sake.

⁴⁰ Thou therfore shalt be ouer my house, and acordyng to thy worde shall al my people obeye: only in the kynges seate wyll I be aboue the.

⁴⁴ And Pharao said vnto Ioseph: I am Pharao, without thy wyll, shall no man lyfte vp ether his hand or fote in al the land of Egypte.

²² And Aaron sayde: let not the wrath of my Lorde waxe fearse, thou knowest the people that they are euen sett on myschefe:

¹² Then the woman sayd: let thyne handmaid speake one worde more vnto my Lorde the kynge: & he sayde: saye on.

¹² But the quene Vasthi woulde not come at the kynges worde by his chamberlaynes. Then was the kinge very wroth, and his indignacion kindled in him.

³¹ Marke well (O Iob) and heare me: holde the styl, vntyll I haue spoken.

⁵ Lorde, howe longe wylt thou be angrye? shall thy ielousy burne lyke fyre for euer?

¹² The kynges disfauour is lyke the roaryng of a Lyon, but hys frendship is lyke the dewe vpon the grasse.

¹⁵ well, be readye here after, when ye heare the noyse of the trompettes blowe wyth the harpes, shawmes, psalteryes, symphonyes and all the other melodyes: that ye fall doune, and worshyppe the Image whiche I haue made. But yf ye worshyppe it not, ye shall be caste immedyatly into an hote burnynge ouen. Let se, what God is there, that maye delyuer you oute of my handes?

¹⁹ Then was Nabuchodonosor full of indignacyon, so that the countenaunce of hys face chaunged vpon Sidrach, Misach, and Abednago. Therfor he charged and commaunded, that the ouen shuld be made seuen tymes hoter, then it was wonte to be, ²⁰ and spake vnto the strongeste worthyes that were in hys hoste, for to bynde Sidrach, Misach and Abednago, & to cast them into the hote burnynge ouen. ²¹ So these men were bounde in theyr cotes hosen, shues with theyr other garmentes, and caste into the hote burnynge ouen: ²² for the kynges commaundemente was so strate, and the ouen was exceadynge hote. As for the men that put in Sydrach, Mysach & Abednago, the flamme of the fyre destroyed them. ²³ And these thre men Sidrach, Misah & Abednago fell doune in the hote burnynge ouen, beinge fast bound.

¹⁹ so that al people, kynredes and tunge stode in awe & feare of him, by reason of the hye estate, that he had lente him. For why, he slewe whom he wold: he smote, whom it pleased hym. Agayne, whom he wolde, he set vp: and whome he lyst, he put doune.

²² Neyther iudgeth the father anye man: but hath committed all iudgement vnto the sonne,

⁷ When Ioseph sawe his brethren, he knewe them: But made straung vnto them, and spake roughly vnto them sayinge: Whence come ye? & they sayde: out of the lande of Canaan, to bye vytayle. ⁸ Ioseph knewe his brethren, but they knewe not hym. ⁹ And Ioseph remembred his dreames which he dreamed of them, and sayde vnto them: ye are spies, and to se where the lande is weake is youre comynge. ¹⁰ And they sayd vnto hym: nay my Lorde: but to bye vytayle thy seruauntes are come.

⁷ And they sayde: The man asked vs of our kynred sayinge: is youre father yet alyue? haue ye not another brother? And we tolde him acording to these wordes. How could we knowe that he wold byd vs bryng oure brother doune wyth vs?

²⁹ And he lyfte vp his eyes & behelde his brother BenIamin his mothers sonne, & sayde: is thys your yongest brother of whome ye sayde vnto me? And sayde: God be mercyful vnto the my sonne.

¹⁸ Then as hyr soule was a departynge, that she must die, she called his name BenOni. But his father called him BenIamyn.

³ And Israel loued Ioseph more then al his chyldren bicause he begate hym in hys olde age, and he made him a cote of many colours.

¹³ And they sayde: we thy seruauntes are .xij. brethren, the sonnes of one man in the lande of Canaan. The yongest is yet with oure father, and one, no man woteth where he is.

³⁶ And Iacob their father said vnto them: Me haue ye robbed of my chyldren: Ioseph is away, and Symeon is awaye, and ye wyll take Ben Iamin awaye. All these thynges fall vpon me.

³⁸ And he sayde: my sonne shall not go doune wyth you. For his brother is dead, & he is left alone. Moreouer some mysfortune myght happen vpon him by the way whych ye go. And so shuld ye bring my gray head with sorowe vnto the graue.

²¹ The chyldren of Beniamin: Bela, Becher, Asbel, Gera, Nacman, Ehi, Ros, Mupim, Hupim and Ard.

⁸ Iuda, thy brethren shal prayse the, & thyne hand shalbe in the necke of thyue enemyes, & thy fathers chyldren shall stoupe vnto the.

¹² When he came nye to the gate of the cytye, beholde there was a dead man caryed out which was the onlye sonne of his mother and she was a wydowe, and much people of the cytye was with her.

¹⁵ Here by ye shall be proued. For by the lyfe of Pharao, ye shall not go hence, vntyll your yongest brother be come hither.

⁶ and I wyll set myne eyes vpon them for the best, for I will brynge them agayne in to this lande: I wyll buylde them vp, and not breake them downe: I will plante them, and not rote them out.

⁴ Beholde, I louse the boundes from thy handes this daye: yf thou wilt now go with me vnto Babilon, vp then: for I wyll se to the, and prouyde for the. But yf thou wilt not go wyth me to Babilon, then remayne here. Beholde all the lande is at thy wil, loke where thou thinkest conuenient and good for the to abyde, there dwell.

⁴ If they goo awaye before their enemyes in to captyuite, then shall I commaunde the swerde, there to slayue them. Thus wyll I sett myne eyes vpon them, for their harme, & not for their wealth.

³⁰ Now therfore when I come to thy seruaunt my father, yf the lad be not with me: seyinge that hys lyfe hangeth by the laddes lyfe,

¹⁵ Here by ye shall be proued. And thereby shall youre wordes be proued, whether there be any trueth in you: or els by the lyfe of Pharao, ye are but spies ¹⁷ And he put them in warde thre dayes. ¹⁸ And Ioseph said vnto them the thyrd day: Thys do and lyue, for I feare God. ¹⁹ If ye meane no hurte, let one of youre brethren be bounde in the preyson, and go ye and brynge the necessarie foode vnto youre housholdes, ²⁰ and brynge youre yongest brother vnto me: that youre wordes maye be beleued, and that ye dye not. And they dyd so.

³ Than sayd Iuda vnto him: the man dyd testifye vnto vs sayinge loke that ye sea not my face excepte your brother be wyth you.

⁵ But yf thou wylt not sende hym, we wyl not goo: for the man sayde vnto vs: loke that ye see not my face, excepte your brother be wyth you.

²⁹ And they came vnto Iacob their father vnto the land of Canaan, and tolde hym all that had happened them sayinge. ³⁰ The Lorde of the lande spake roughly to vs, and toke vs for spyes to serch the countre. ³¹ And we sayde vnto hym: we meane truely and are no spyes. ³² We be .xij. brethren sonnes of oure father, one is away, and the yongest is now wyth oure father in the lande of Canaan. ³³ And the Lorde of the countre sayde vnto vs: here by shal I knowe yf ye meane truely: leaue one of youre brethren here with me, and take foode necessary for youre housholdes and get you away, ³⁴ and brynge youre yongest brother vnto me. And thereby shall I knowe that ye are no spyes, but meane truely: So wyll I delyuer you youre brother agayn, and ye shal occupye in the lande.

⁴ Therfore yf thou wylt sende oure brother wyth vs, we wyl go and bye the food. ⁵ But yf thou wylt not sende hym, we wyl not goo: for the man sayde vnto vs: loke that ye see not my face, excepte your brother be wyth you.

⁷ and he within shoulde aunswere & saye: trouble me not, the dore is now shut, and my seruauntes are with me in the chamber, I cannot ryse, and geue them to the.

¹⁸ And Iacob loued hyr well, and sayd: I wyl serue the seuen yere for Rahel thy yongest doughter. ¹⁹ And Laban answered, it is better that I gyue hyr the then to to an other manne: byde therefore wyth me. ²⁰ And Iacob serued .vij. yere for Rahell, and they semed vnto hym but a fewe dayes, for the loue he had to hyr. ²¹ And Iacob sayed vnto Laban: gyue me my wyfe that I maye lye wyth hyr. For the tyme appoynted me is come.

²⁸ And Iacob did euen so, & passed out that weke, & then he gaue him Rahel his doughter to wyfe also.

²² And God remembred Rahel, heard hir, & made hyr fruitefull: ²³ so that she conceaued & bare a sonne & said: God hath taken away my rebuke. ²⁴ And she called hys name Ioseph, saying. The Lord giue me yet an other sonne. ²⁵ As sone as Rahel had borne Ioseph, Iacob said to Laban. Send me awaye that I may go vnto myne own place & contrey,

¹⁶ And they departed from Bethell, & when he was but a feld breath from Ephrath, Rahel began to trauel. And in trauelynge she was in perell. ¹⁷ And as she was in paynes of hyr laboure the mydwyfe sayed vnto hir: feare not, for thou shalt haue thys sonne also. ¹⁸ Then as hyr soule was a departynge, that she must die, she called his name BenOni. But his father called him BenIamyn.

¹⁹ The chyldren of Rahel Iacobs wyfe: Ioseph and Beniamin.

¹³ and Israel sayde vnto Ioseph: do not thy brethren kepe in Sichem? come that I may sende the to them. And he answered here am I. ¹⁴ And he sayde vnto hym: go & see whether it be well wyth thy brethren and the shepe, and brynge me worde agayne. And sent hym out of the vale of Hebron, for to go to Sichem.

³³ And he knewe it sayinge: it is my sonnes coote, a wicked beast hath deuoured hym, and Ioseph is rent in peces.

³¹ then as soone as he seeth that the lad is not come, he wyll dye. So shall we thy seruauntes brynge the gray hedde of thy seruaunt oure father wyth sorow vnto the graue.

¹⁷ And then my wrath wyl waxe whot against them, and I wil forsake them, and wyl hide my face from them, & they shalbe consumed And when much aduersitie and tribulation is come vpon them, then they wyll saye: bycause our God is not among vs, these tribulations are come vpon vs.

³ For my soule is full of trouble, and my lyfe draweth nye vnto hell. ⁴ I am counted as one of them that go downe vnto the pitte, I am euen as a man that hath no strength.

³⁴ For howe can I goo vnto my father, and the lad not wyth me: lest I shulde sea the wretchednes that shall come on my father.

¹ And when he had made an ende of speaking vnto Saul, the soule of Ionathas was knit wyth the soule of Dauid. In so much that he loued hym as hys owne soule.

²⁹ And yf any man rise to persecute the and to seke thy soule the soule of my Lorde be bounde in a bondel of lyfe with the Lorde thy God. And thy soules of thy enemies be slong in the midle of a slinge.

¹⁷ And the messenger answered & sayd: Israel is fled before the Philistines, & there is a great slaughter chaunsed amonge the people, and thy two sonnes, Hophni & Phinehes are dead, & therto the arck of God is taken. ¹⁸ And when he made mencyon of the arcke of God, Eli fell from of hys stole backwarde towarde the gate, and hys necke brake, & he dyed: for he was olde & vnweldye and he had iudged Israel fourtye yeares.

²² And Dauid sayde vnto Abiathar: I wist it the same daye, that Doeg the Edomite whyche was there would tell it Saul. And I am cause of the death of all the soules of thy fathers house.

¹⁰ For Godly sorowe causeth repentaunce vnto saluacyon, not to be repented of: when worldlye sorowe causeth death.

¹³ I woulde not brethren haue you ignoraunt concerninge them whiche are fallen a sleepe, that ye sorowe not as other do which haue no hope.

³² Yet forgeue them their synne I praye the: If not wype me out of thy boke which thou hast written.

⁷ Yet scrace will anye man dye for a ryghtuouse man. Parauenture for a good man durst a man dye. ⁸ But God setteth out his loue that he hath to vs, seing that whil we wer yet sinners, Christ died for vs. ⁹ Much more then now (seing we are iustified in hys bloud) shall we be saued from wrath thorowe hym. ¹⁰ For yf when we were enemyes, we were reconciled to God by the death of hys sonne muche more, seynge we are reconciled, we shall be preserued by his lyfe.

³ For I haue wyshed my selfe to be cursed from Christ, for my brethren and my kynsmen (as pertaynynge to the fleshe)

²² And for the cause was Iesus a stablisher of a better testament.

¹⁶ Hereby perceyue we loue, that he gaue hys lyfe for vs, & therfore oughte we also to geue our lyues for the brethren.

⁸ And Moses tolde his father in lawe al that the Lord had done vnto Pharao & to the Egiptians for Israels sake, and all the trauayle that had happened them by the way, and how the Lord had deliuered them.

³³ Neuerthelesse I wyll not destroye all thy males from my aultare, to dase thy syghte with all and to make thyne hert melte. And al the multitude of thyne house shall dye younge. ³⁴ And this shalbe a sygne vnto the, that shal come vpon thy two sonnes, Hophni and Phinehes: euen in one daye they shal dye bothe of them.

²⁸ Beholde I will take the to thy fathers & thou shalt be put in thy graue in peace, and thyne eyes shall not se all the myscheue that I will bryng vpon this place & vpon the enhabyters of the same. And they brought the kynge worde agayne.

⁶ For how can I se the euil that shal happen vnto my people? and how can I loke vpon the destruccyon of my kinred.

²⁹ Haue I euer reioysed at the hurte of myne enemy? Or whas I euer glad, that any harme happened vnto hym? Oh no.

³ The snares of death compased me round aboute, the paynes of hell gat hold vpon me I founde trouble and heauynesse.

¹⁴³ Trouble and heuynesse haue taken holde vpon me, yet is my delite in thy commaundementes.

¹⁰ The kynge of Babylon also caused Zedekiahs sonnes to be slayne before his face, yee & put all the princes of Iuda to death at Reblath. ¹¹ Moreouer he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, caused hym to be bounde with chynes, to be caried vnto Babylon: and lett hym lye in preson, tyll he dyed.
