¹ In the same yeare that Tharthan came to Asdod, where Sargon the kynge of the Assirians sent him, what tyme as he also beseged Asdod, and wanne it the same season. ² Then spake the Lorde vnto Esai the sonne of Amos, sayinge: go and louse of that sacke clothe from thy loynes: and put of thy shoes from thy fete. And so he did, going naked and barefote. ³ Then sayde the Lorde: where as my seruaunt Esai goeth naked and barefote, it is a token and signifyenge of the thinge, that after thre yeare shall come vpon Egipt and Ethiopia. ⁴ For euen thus shall the kinge of the Assirians dryue bothe younge & olde, as presonners naked and barefote, oute of Egipte and Ethiopia. And shall discouer the shame of Egipt. ⁵ They shalbe also at their wittes ende, and ashamed one of another: the Egipcians of the Morians, and the Morians of the Egipcians, at the syght of their glorye. ⁶ Moreouer they that dwell in the Iles shall se euen the same daye: behold, this is our hope to whom we fled to seke helpe, that we might be delyuered from the kynge of the Assirians. How wil we escape?

¹ And the Philistines toke the arcke of God, & caried it from the helpe stone vnto Asdod, & broughte it

¹⁷ These are the golden arsses with Emerodes whiche the Philistines gaue to amendes for a trespace offeryng, to the Lord: for Asdod one: for Gaza one: for Askalon one: for Geth one: & for Akaron one.

¹⁷ And the kinge of Assyrya sent Tarthan & Rabsaris & Rabsakeh from Lachis to kynge Hezekiah with a greate Host to Ierusalem. And they went vp & came to Ierusalem, & wente & stode by the conduyte of the vppermoste pole which is in the waye to the fullers felde,

²⁰ & al kinges of the land of Hus, al kinges of the Philistines lande, Ascalon, Azah, Accaron & the remnaunt of Asdod,

²⁹ For lo, I begynne to plage the cyty, that my name is geuen vnto: thynke ye then, that I will leaue you vnpunyshed? Ye shal not go quyte. For why, I call for a swearde vpon al the inhabitours of the earth, sayeth the Lord of Hostes. ³⁰ Therfore tell them all these wordes, and saye vnto them: The Lorde shall crye from aboue, and let hys voyce be hearde from his holy habitacion. Wyth a greate noyse shall he crye from his courte regall. He shall geue a greate voyce (like the grape gatherers) and the sounde thereof shalbe hearde vnto the endes of the worlde.

⁸ I wyl rote out them the dwel at Asood & hym the holdeth the scepter of Ascalon, and stretche oute myne hande ouer Accaron, that the remnaunte of the Phylystines shal peryshe sayth the Lorde.

⁵ And he sayed: Come not hyther, but put thy shooes of thy fete: for the place wheron thou standest is holy ground.

¹⁵ And the captayne of the Lordes hoste sayde vnto Iosua: do thy shoes of thy feete, for the place wheron thou standest, is holye. And Iosua dyd so.

²⁴ And he stripte of hys clothes and prophesyed before Samuel in like maner, & fell naked all the day & all the night wherfore it is a comen sayinge, is Saul also amonge the prophetes?

²⁰ Then Dauid returned to salute hys housholde. And Michol the doughter of Saul came out agaynst hym, and sayde: Oh how gloryous was the kynge of Israel to day, which strypte hym selfe to daye before the eyes of the maydens of hys seruauntes, as a lyght brayned felowe is wont to strype hymselfe.

⁸ And they sayde vnto hym: it was an hearry man and gyrde with a gyrdle of a skinne aboute hys loynes. And he said vnto them: it is Eliah the Thesbite.

²⁰ Then Iob stode vp, and rente hys clothes shaued his heade, fell doune vpon the ground, worshipped, ²¹ and sayde: Naked came I out of my mothers wombe, & naked shall I turne thether agayne. The Lorde gaue, and the Lord hath taken awaye now blessed be the name of the Lorde.

¹ Moreouer, thus sayde the Lorde vnto me: go thy waye, and gett the a lynen breche, and gyrde it aboute thy loynes, and let it not be wet. ² Then I got me a breche, accordynge to the commaundement of the Lorde, and put it about my loynes. ³ After this, the Lord spake vnto me agayn: ⁴ Take the breche that thou hast prepared and put aboute the, and gett the vp, and go vnto Euphrates, and hyde it in a hole of the rock. ⁵ So went I, and hydde it, as the Lorde commaunded me. ⁶ And it happened longe after this, that the Lorde spake vnto me: Vp, and get the to Euphrates, and fet the breche from thence, which I commaunded the to hyde there. ⁷ Then went I to Euphrates, & dygged vp, & toke the breche from the place where I had hyd it: & beholde, the breche was corrupt, so that it was profytable for nothinge. ⁸ Then sayde the Lorde vnto me: ⁹ Thus sayeth the Lord: Euen so wyll I corrupte the pryde of Iuda, & the hye mynde of Ierusalem. ¹⁰ This people is a wycked people, they wyll not heare my worde, they folowe the wicked ymagynacyons of their owne herte, & hange vpon straunge Goddes, them haue they serued & worshypped: & therfore they shalbe as this breche, that serueth for nothynge. ¹¹ For as straytelye as a breche lyeth vpon a mans loynes, so strately dyd I bynde the whol house of Israell, and the whole house of Iuda vnto me, sayeth the Lorde: that they myght be my people: that they myght haue a gloryous name: that they myght be in honoure: but they wolde not obeye me.

¹ Moreouer, thus sayde the Lorde vnto Ieremy: Go thy waye, and bye the an erthen pytcher, & bringe forthe the Senatours, & chefe preastes ² in to the valley of the chyldren of Hennon, which lieth before the porte that is made of bryck, & shewe them there the wordes, that I shall tell the, ³ & saye thus vnto them: Heare the worde of the Lorde, ye kynges of Iuda, and ye cytesyns of Ierusalem: Thus sayeth the Lord of Hostes the God of Israel: Beholde, I will bring soche a plage vpon this place, that the eares of all that heare it, shall glowe. ⁴ And that because they haue forsaken me, and vnhalowed this place, and haue offred in it vnto straunge goddes: whome nether they, their fathers, ner the kynges of Iuda haue knowne. They haue fylled this place also with the bloude of innocentes, ⁵ for they haue sett vp an aulter vnto Baall, to burne their children for a burntofferynge vnto Baall, which I nether commaunded, ner charged them, nether thought ones there vpon. ⁶ Beholde therfore, the time commeth (saieth the Lorde) that this place shall nomore be called. Topheth, ner the valley of the children of Hennom, but the valley of slaughter. ⁷ For in thys place wyll I slaye the Senatours of Iuda and Ierusalem, and kyll them downe with the swearde in the syght of their enemyes and of them that seke their lyues. And theyr deed carcases wyll I geue to be meate for the foules of the ayre, and beastes of the felde. ⁸ And I wyll make this cytie so desolate, and despysed, that who so goeth ther by, shall be abashed and ieast vpon her, because of al her plages. ⁹ I wyll fede them also with the fleshe of their sonnes and their daughters. Yee euery one shall eate vp another in the besegynge & straytnesse, wherwith their enemyes (that seke their lyues) shall kepe them in. ¹⁰ And the pytcher shalt thou breake in the syght of the men, that shalbe wyth the, and saye vnto them: ¹¹ Thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: Euen so wyll I destroye thys people and cytie: as a Potter breaketh a vessell, that can not be made whole agayne. In Topheth shall they be buried, for they shall haue none other place. ¹² Thus wyll I do vnto this place, also sayeth the Lorde, and to them that dwell therin: yee I wyl do to thys citie as vnto Topheth. ¹³ (For the houses of Ierusalem & the houses of the kynges of Iuda are defyled, lyke as Topheth) because of all the houses, in whose parlers they dyd sacryfyce vnto all the hooste of heauen and poured out drincke offringes vnto straunge goddes. ¹⁴ And so Ieremye came from Topheth, where the Lorde had sent hym to prophecye, and stode in the courte of the house of the Lorde, and spake to all the people: ¹⁵ Thus sayeth the Lord of Hostes the God of Israell: Beholde, I will brynge vpon this cytie and vpon euery towne aboute it, all the plages that I haue deuysed agaynst them: for they haue bene obstinate, & wolde not obeye my warnynges.

¹⁷ thou mayest mourne by thy self alone, but vse no deadly lamentacyon. Hold on thy bonet, and put on thy shues vpon thy fete, couer not thy face, and eate no mourners breade.

²³ your bonnettes shall ye haue vpon youre heades, and shues vpon your fete. Ye shall neyther mourne nor wepe, but in youre sinnes ye shalbe sorowful, and one repente with another.

⁸ Wherfore I wyll mourne and make lamentacion, bare & naked wyll I go: I must mourne lyke the dragons, and take sorow as the Estriches:

¹¹ Thou that dwellest at Sephir get the hence with shame. The proude shall boost nomore for very sorowe: and why? her neyghboure shall take from her what she hath.

⁴ And then shal those prophetes be confounded, euery one of his vision when he prophecieth: neither shall they weer sackclothes any more, to disceyue men wt all.

⁴ This Ihon had his garmente of Camels hear & a girdel of a skinne about his loynes. His meate was locustes, & wilde honye.

²⁴ Iesus then sayde to hys disciples. If anye man will folow me, let hym forsake hym selfe, and take vp hys crosse and folowe me.

⁷ Then sayde the disciple whom Iesus loued vnto Peter: It is the Lord. When Simon Peter hearde that it was the Lorde, he gyrde hys mantel to him (for he was naked) and sprange into the sea:

¹⁶ And that man in whom the euyll spyryte was ranne on them and ouercame them, and preuayled agaynste them, so that they fledde out of that house naked and wounded.

³ And I will geue power vnto my .ij. witnesses, & they shal prophesy .M.ij.C. & .lx. daies, cloteth in sacke cloth.

³⁴ after the nombre of the daies in which ye serched out the land .xl. daies, & euery daye a yere: so that they shall beare your vnryghteousnes .xl. yere, & ye shal fele my vengeaunce

¹⁸ But lo, as for me, and the children whiche the Lorde hath geuen me: we are a token and a wondre in Israel, for the Lorde of hostes sake, whiche dwelleth vpon the hill of Syon.

¹ Wo be to the land of flieng shippes, whyche is of thys side the floude of Ethiopia: ² whych sendeth her message ouer the sea in shyppes of redes vpon the water: and sayeth: go sone & do youre message vnto a straunge and harde folke, to a fearful people, and to a people that is forther then this: to a desperate and pylled folke, whose lande is deuyded from vs with riuers of water. ³ Yea, al ye that syt in the compasse of the worlde, and dwell vpon the earthe, when the token shalbe geuen vpon the mountaynes, then loke vp: & when the horne bloweth, then herken to, ⁴ for thus hath the Lorde sayde vnto me. I layde me doune, and pondred the matter in my house, at the noone day when it was hote. And there fell a mistynge shower, lyke a dewe, as it happened in Haruest. ⁵ But the frutes were not yet type cut of, and the grapes were but younge and grene. Then one smote of the grapes wyth an hoke, yea he hewed doune also the bowes and the braunches and dyd cast them awaye. ⁶ And thus they were layde waste, for the foules of the mountaynes, and for the beastes of the earthe together. So that the foules sat there vpon, and the beastes of the earth wyntered there. ⁷ Then shall there be a present brought vnto the Lord of Hostes, euen that harde folke, that fearful folke, and that forther is then thys: that desperate and pylled folke (whose lande is deuided from vs with floudes of water) vnto the place of the name of the Lorde of Hostes: euen vnto the hyll of Syon.

⁹ For there came a rumoure, that Tharhakah kynge of Ethiopia was come forth to warre agaynst hym. And when the Kynge of Assyria hearde that, he sent other messaungers to Kynge Hezekiah with this commaundement:

³ For I am the Lorde thy God, the holy one of Israel, thy Sauyour. I gaue Egypte for thy delyueraunce, the Moryans, and the Sabees for the:

A daye for a yeare, a daye (I saye) for a yeare, wyll I euer laye vpon the.

² and the quyre whiche is wythin the temple caste out and meate it not: for it is geuen vnto the Gentyles and the holy cytye shal they treade vnder fote .xlij. monethes. ³ And I will geue power vnto my .ij. witnesses, & they shal prophesy .M.ij.C. & .lx. daies, cloteth in sacke cloth.

⁴ Wherfore Hanon toke Dauids seruauntes and shaued of the one halfe of euerye mannes bearde & cut of theyr garmentes euen in the myddle, euen harde by the buttockes of them and sent them awaye.

¹⁷ Therfore shall the Lorde shaue the heades of the doughters of Syon, and make theyr bewtye bare in that daye.

⁴ I wil delyuer Egipt also into the handes of greuous rulers, and a cruel king shal haue the rule of them.

³ Thy shame shalbe discouered, & thy preuyties shalbe sene. For I wyll auenge me of the, and no man shall lett me:

²² And yf thou woldest saye then in thyne herte: Wherfore come these thinges vpon me? Euen for the multitude of thy blasphemyes, shall thy hinder partes and thy fete be discouered.

²⁶ Therfore shall I turne thy clothes ouer thy head, and discouer thy thyghes, that thy preuities maye be sene,

²⁶ Yea I will delyuer them into the handes of those, that seke after their lyues. Namely, into the power of Nabuchodonozor the kynge of Babylon, and into the power of his seruauntes. And after all these thinges it shalbe inhabited as afore tyme, sayeth the Lorde.

¹⁸ At Taphnis the daye shalbe darcke, when I breake there the scepter of the lande of Egypte, and when the pompe of her power shall haue an ende. A cloud shal couer her, & her doughters shalbe led awaye into captyuyte.

¹⁸ I counsel the to bye of me golde tryed in the fyre, that thou mayest be ryche, and whyte raymente, that thou mayest be clothed, that thy fylthye nakednes do not appere, & annointe thine eyes wyth eye salue, that thou maiest se.

²¹ doeste thou truste to the staffe of this broken rede Egypte, on which yf a man lene, it wyll runne into hys hande & perce it. For euen so is Pharao kynge of Egypt vnto all that truste on hym.

²² Every man can eschue a persone moued in anger, for what doeth he wyselye?

³ But Pharaos helpe shalbe youre confusyon, & the comfort in the Egypcyans shadowe shalbe your owne shame.

⁵ But ye shall al be ashamed of the people that maye not helpe you, whiche shall not brynge you strength or comforte, but shame and confusyon.

⁷ For the Egipcians helpe shalbe but vayne and lost. Therfore I tolde you also, that your pryde shulde haue an end.

⁶ lo, thou puttest thy truste in a broken staffe of rede (I meane Egypte) whyche he that leaneth vpon, it goeth in to hys hande & shutteth hym thorowe. Euen so is Pharao the Kyng of Egypt, vnto all them that trust in him.

²³ Moreouer, thus sayeth the Lorde: Let not the wyse man reioyse in his wisdome, nor the stronge man in hys strength, neyther the ryche man in hys ryches: ²⁴ But who so wyl reioyse, let hym reioyse in this, that he vnderstandeth and knoweth me: for I am the Lorde, which do mercy, equite, and ryghtuousnes vpon the earth. Therefore haue I pleasure in suche thynges, sayeth the Lorde.

⁵ Thus sayeth the Lorde: Cursed be the man that putteth his trust in man, & that taketh flesh for hys arme: and he, whose herte departeth from the Lorde.

⁶ that al thei whiche dwell in Egypte, maye knowe, that I am the Lorde: because thou haste bene a staffe of rede to the house of Israel. ⁷ When they toke hold of the with theyr hand thou brakest & pryekest them on euerye syde, & yf they leaned vpon the, thou brakest & hurtest the reynes of theyr backes.

²¹ Therfore let no man reioice in men. For all thinges are youres

²⁰ Confounded are they, that put eny confydence in them: For when they came to opteyne the thinges that they loked for, they were brought to confusion.

³⁰ Yf thou be innocent, he shall saue the: and thorow the vngyltinesse of thyne handes shalt thou be delyuered.

³ What wyll ye do in tyme of the visitacion and destruccyon, that shall come from farre? Tho whome wyll ye runne for helpe? or to whome will ye geue your honour that ye maye kepe it?

¹⁷ Ryghtuousnes will I set vp agayne in the balaunce, and iudgement in the weyghtes. The tempeste of haile shall take awaye your refuge, that ye haue to disceyue wythall, & the ouerflowynge waters shall breake doune youre stronge holdes of dyssimulacion:

¹ Wo be to those shrynkynge children (sayeth the Lorde) whiche seke councell, but not at me: whiche take a webbe in hande but not after my wil: that they may heape one synne vpon another. ² They go doune into Egypte (and aske me no councell) to seke helpe at the power of Pharao, and comforte in the shadowe of the Egypcians. ³ But Pharaos helpe shalbe youre confusyon, & the comfort in the Egypcyans shadowe shalbe your owne shame. ⁴ Youre rulers haue bene at Zoan, and youre messaungers came vnto Hanes. ⁵ But ye shall al be ashamed of the people that maye not helpe you, whiche shall not brynge you strength or comforte, but shame and confusyon. ⁶ Youre beastes haue borne burthens vpon theyr backes towarde the Southe, thorow the way that is full of parell and trouble, because of the lyon & lyones, of the Cockatryce & shutynge dragon. Yea the Mules bare youre substaunce, & the Camels brought your treasure vpon their croked backes, vnto a people that can not helpe you. ⁷ For the Egipcians helpe shalbe but vayne and lost. Therfore I tolde you also, that your pryde shulde haue an end.

¹⁵ For the Lorde God, euen the holy one of Israell hath promysed thus: Wyth styll syttynge and rest shall ye be healed, in quyetnesse & hope shall youre strength lye. ¹⁶ Notwithstandynge ye regarde it not, but ye wyll saye: No, for thus are we constrayned to fle vpon horses. And therfore shall ye fle, we muste ryde vpon swift beastes, and therfore youre persecutours shal yet be swyfter.

¹ Wo be vnto them that go doune into Egypte for help, and trust in horses, & comforte themselues in charettes, because they be many, & in horse men because they be lusty & strong. But they regarde not the holy one of Israel, and they aske no question at the Lorde. ² Where as he neuertheles plageth the wicked, and yet goeth not from hys word when he steppeth forthe, and taketh the victory agaynste the housholde of the frowarde, & agaynste the helpe of euyll doars. ³ Nowe the Egypcyans are men, and not God, and theyr horses fleshe and not sprete. And as soone as the Lorde stretched oute his hande, then shall the helper fall, and he that shuld haue ben helped, and shall all together be destroyed.

¹⁵ Why makest thou moue for thy harme? I my selfe haue pyte of thy sorowe, but for the multytude of thy mysdedes and synnes, I haue done this vnto the. ¹⁶ And therfore all they that deuoure the, shalbe deuoured, and all thyne enemyes shall be led into captiuite. All they that make the wast, shalbe wasted them selues: and al those that robbe the, wyl I make also to be robbed. ¹⁷ For I wyll geue the thy healthe agayne, and make thy woundes whole, sayeth the Lorde, because they reuyled the, as one caste awaye, and despysed, O Syon.

⁴ at the same tyme, when he shall be there, to destroye the whole lande of the Philistines. He shall make waste both Cirus, Sidon and all other that are sworne vnto them. For the Lorde wyll destroye all Palestina and the other Iles, that be deuyded from the countre.

³³ Ye serpentes and generacion of vppers howe shoulde ye scape the damnacion of hell?

³ When they shal say peace and no daunger, then commeth on them soden destruccion, as the trauaylynge of a woman wyth chyld, and they shal not escape.

³ howe shal we escape, yf we despise so great saluacyon, whyche at the fyrst began to be preached of the Lorde hym selfe, and afterward was confirmed to vswarde, by them that hearde it,
