¹² Yea verely I wil declare thy goodnes and thy workes, but they shal not profyt that

¹¹ Why offre ye so manye sacrifyces vnto me? I am discontent for the brentofferinges of wethers and with the fatnesse of fedbeastes. I haue no pleasure in the bloude of bullockes, lambes & gootes. ¹² When ye appeare before me, who requyreth you to treade wythin my porches? ¹³ Offre me no mo oblacions, for it is but loste laboure. I abhorre youre incense. I maye not awaye with youre new moones, youre Sabbathes and solempne dayes. Youre fastinges are also in vayne. ¹⁴ I hate youre newe holye dayes and fastynges, euen from my very hert. They make me weerye, I can not abyde them. ¹⁵ Though ye holde oute your handes, yet turne I myne eyes from you. And though ye make manye prayers, yet heare I nothynge at all, for youre handes are full of bloude.

¹⁵ Wo be vnto them that seke to depe, to hyde theyr ymagynacion before the Lorde, which reherse theyr councels in the darcknes, & saye: who seyth vs, or who knoweth vs?

² For they seke me daylye and wyll knowe my waies, euen as it were a people that did right & had not forsaken the statutes of their God. They argue with me concerninge right iudgement, and wil pleate at the lawe with their God. ³ Wherfore fast we (saye they) and thou seist it not? we put oure lyues to straytnesse, & thou regardest it not? ⁴ Beholde, when ye fast, your lust remayneth still: for ye do no lesse vyolence to youre detters: lo, ye falle to stryfe and debate, and to smite hym wyth youre fyst that speaketh vnto you. Ye fast not (as som tyme) that your voyce might be hearde aboue. ⁵ Thyncke ye this fast pleaseth me, that a man shoulde chasten him self for a daye, and to writhe his head aboute lyke an hoke in an hearry cloth, and to lye vpon the earth? Shoulde that be called fasting, or a daye that pleaseth the Lord. ⁶ But this fastyng pleaseth not me, til the tyme be thou louse him out of bondage, that is in thy daunger: that thou breake the ooth of wicked barginnes, that thou let the oppressed go fre and take from them all maner of burthens.

⁶ Their webbe maketh no clothe and they maye not couer them with their laboures. Their dedes are the dedes of wickednes, and the worck of robbery is in their handes: ⁷ Their fete runne to euyll, & they make haste to shed innocent bloude. Their councels are wycked councel, harme and destruccion are in their wayes. ⁸ But the way of peace they know not. In their goinge is no equite, their wayes are so crocked, that whosoeuer goeth therin, knoweth nothinge of peace.

⁵ Thou helpest him that doeth ryght with cherefulnesse, and them that thyncke vpon thy wayes. But lo, thou art angry, for we offend and haue euer be in sinne, there is not one whole.

³ For who so slaieth an oxe for me, doth me so great dishonour as he that killeth a man. He that kylleth a shepe for me, choketh a dogge. He that bryngeth me meateofferinges, offereth swynes bloude. Who so maketh me a memory all of incense, prayseth the thinge that is vnryght. Yet take they suche wayes in hand, and their soule delyteth in these abhomynacyons. ⁴ Therfore wyll I also haue pleasure in laughing him to scorne, & the thing that they feare wyll I brynge vpon them. For when I called, no man gaue answere: when I spake, they woulde not heare. But dyd wickednesse before myne eyes, and chose the thynges that displease me.

⁴ Truste not in false lyenge wordes, sayenge: here is the temple of the Lorde, here is the temple of the Lorde, here is the temple of the Lorde. ⁵ For yf ye wyll amende youre wayes & councels, yf ye wyll iudge righte betwixte a man and hys neyghboure: ⁶ yf ye wyl not oppresse the straunger, the fatherles & the wyddowe: yf ye wyll not shede innocent bloud in this place: yf ye wyll not cleue to straunge goddes to youre owne destruccyon: ⁷ then wil I let you dwell in thys place, yea in the land that I gaue afore tyme vnto youre fathers for euer. ⁸ But take hede, yea trust in councels, that begyle you & do you no good. ⁹ For when ye haue stolen, murthered, committed aduoutrye, and periury: When ye haue offred vnto Baal, folowyng straunge & vnknowne Goddes. ¹⁰ Then come ye, and stande before me in thys house, whiche hath my name geuen vnto it and say: Tush, we are absolued quite, though we haue done all these abhominacions. ¹¹ What? thincke you thys house that beareth my name, is a denne of theues? And these thinges are not done priuelye, but before myne eyes sayeth the Lorde.

² But ye hate the good, and loue the euell: ye plucke of mennes skynnes, and the flesh from their bones: ³ ye eate the flesh of my people, and slay of their skynne: ye breake their bones, ye choppe them in peces as it were in to a cauldron, and as flesh into a pot. ⁴ Now the tyme shall come, that when they call vnto the Lorde, he shall not heare them, but hyde hys face from them, because that thorowe their owne Imaginacyons they haue dealte so wyckedly.

⁵ All their workes thei do for to be sene of men. They set abroade theyr philateries, & make large borders on theyr garmentes,

¹³ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in.

¹⁰ as it is wrytten: There is none righteous, no not one: ¹¹ there is none that vnderstandeth, there is none that seketh after God, ¹² they are all gone out of the waye, they are all made vnprofytable, there is none that doeth good, no not one. ¹³ Theyr throte is an open sepulchre, with theyr tonges they haue disceyued, the poyson of aspes is vnder their lippes. ¹⁴ Whose mouthes are full of curssyng and bytternes. ¹⁵ Theyr fete are swyfte to sheed bloude. ¹⁶ Destruccyon and wretchednes are in theyr wayes. ¹⁷ And the way of peace they haue not knowen. ¹⁸ There is no feare of God before theyr eyes. ¹⁹ Yea and we knowe that whatsoeuer the law sayeth, he saith it to them which are vnder the lawe. That all mouthes maye be stopped, and all the world be subdued to God, ²⁰ because that by the dedes of the lawe, shall no fleshe be iustifyed in the syght of God. For by the lawe commeth the knoweledge of synne.

² For I beare them recorde that they haue a feruent mynde to Godwarde, but not accordynge to knoweledge. ³ For they are ignoraunte of the ryghteousnes whiche is alowed before God, and go aboute to stablish theyr owne ryghtuousnes, and therfore are not obediente vnto the ryghtuousnes whiche is of valoure before God.
