¹ Eliu spake moreouer, and sayde: ² Thinkest thou it right that thou saiest: I am ryghteous before GOD? ³ Seynge, thou sayest so, howe doest thou knowe it? What thynge haste thou more excellente then I, that I am a synner? ⁴ Therfore wyll I geue answere vnto the and thy frendes: ⁵ loke vnto the heauen, and beholde it: consydre the cloudes, how they are hyer then thou. ⁶ If thou sinnest, what doest thou vnto hym? If thyne offences be manye, howe gettest thou his fauoure? ⁷ Yf thou be ryghteous what geuest thou hym? Or what receyueth he of thy handes? ⁸ Of such an vngodly personne as thou, and of the sonne of man that is ryghtuous as thou pretendeste to be: ⁹ there is a great crye & complaynt made by them that are oppressed with violence, yea euerye man complayneth vpon the cruell arme of tyrauntes. ¹⁰ For suche one neuer sayeth: Where is God that made me? & that shyneth vpon vs, that we myght prayse him in the nighte? ¹¹ Whiche geueth vs more vnderstandyng then he doth the beastes of the earthe, and teacheth vs more then the foules of heauen. ¹² If anye suche complayne, no man geueth answere, and that because of the wyckednesse of proude tyrauntes. ¹³ But yf a man call vpon God, doth not he heare him? Doth not the almyghtye accepte hys crye? ¹⁴ Whan thou speakest then, shulde not he pardon the, yf thou open thy selfe before hym, and put thy trust in hym? ¹⁵ Then vseth he no vyolence in his wrath nether hath the pleasure in curyous & depe inquisicions. ¹⁶ Therfore hath Iob opened hys mouthe but in vayne, and folyshlye hathe he made so many wordes.

¹⁷ he troubleth me so with the tempest, and woundeth me out of measure without a cause.

⁷ where as (notwithstandynge) thou knowest that I am no wycked person, and that there is no man able to delyuer me out of thyne hande.

¹⁷ Howbeit there is no wyckednesse in my handes, and my prayer is cleane.

⁶ knowe thys then, that it is God, whiche hath handled me so violently & hath compased me aboute with his scourges. ⁷ Beholde, though I crye, yet violence is done vnto me, I can not be herde: Though I complane, there is none to geue sentence with me.

² As truly as God liueth (which hath taken away my power from me) and the almighty, that hath vexed my mynd. ³ My lippes shall talke of no vanite, and my tonge shall speake no disceyte ⁴ whyle my breth is in me, and as longe as the wynde (that God hath geuen me) is in my nostrels. ⁵ God forbidde, that I should graunt your cause to be ryght. As for me, vntil mine ende come, will I neuer go from mine innocencye. ⁶ My ryghteous dealinge kepe I fast, whiche I wyll not forsake: my hert shall not reproue me of my dayes.

⁵ And why? Iob hath sayde: I am ryghtuous, but GOD doth me wronge.

⁸ Wilt thou disanulle my iudgemente? Or wilt thou condempne me, that thou thy selfe mayest be made righteous?

³⁶ But I say vnto you, that of euery idell worde that men shall haue spoken: they shall geue a countes at the daye of iudgement. ³⁷ For thy wordes thou shalt be iustified: & by thy wordes thou shalt be condemned.

²² And he sayde to him: Of thyne owne mouthe iudge I the thou euil seruaunt. Knowest thou that I am a strayte man takyng vp that I layde not doune, and reapyng that I did not sowe?

²¹ For that I shulde be an innocent, my conscyence knoweth it not, ye I my selfe am werry of my lyfe. ²² This one thyng wyll I saye: He destroyeth both the ryghtuous & vngodly.

³⁰ Though I washed my self with snowe water, & made myne handes neuer so clene, ³¹ yet shuldest thou dyppe me in the myer, and myne awne clothes shulde defyle me.

¹⁵ Yf I do wickedlye, wo is me therfore: Yf I be righteous, yet darre I not lyfte vp my heade: so full am I of confusion, and se myne owne mysery.

¹⁵ What maner of felow is the Almightye, that we shoulde serue him? What profyt should we haue, to submitte oure selues vnto hym?

² For how great a porcion shal I haue of God from aboue? & what enheritaunce from the almyghty on hye?

⁹ For he sayeth: Thoughe a man be good, yet is he naughte before God.

¹³ Shoulde I then clense my herte in vayne (thougt I) and washe my handes in innocency?

¹⁴ Ye haue sayed. Is it but lost labour, to serue God? What profyt haue we for keping his commaundementes, and for walkinge humbly before the Lorde of Hostes?

⁸ which goeth in the company of wicked doars, & walketh with vngodly men?

²⁰ He that goeth in the company of wyse men, shalbe wyse: but who so is a companyon of foles, shalbe hurte.

⁵ And he brought him out of the dores, & sayd: loke vp vnto heauen, & tel the stars, if thou be able to numbre them. And said vnto hym: Euen so shal thy sede be.

²⁷ But in deade can God dwell on the earthe? Beholde neyther heauen, nor heauen aboue all heauens are able to contayne the: howe muche lesse then thys house that I haue built?

¹² Now because that God is hyer then the heauens, & because thou seyst that the starres are so hye

⁵ Beholde, the mone shyneth nothinge in comparison to him, and the starres are vncleane in his sight. ⁶ Howe muche more then man, that is but corrupcion: & the sonne of man, whyche is but a worme?

²⁶ Beholde, so great is God, that he passeth oure knowledge, nether are we able to come to the experience of hys yeares.

¹⁶ Arte thou of hys councell when he spredeth oute the cloudes? Haste thou the perfect knowledge of his wonders?

²² Goulde is brought oute of the Northe, but the prayse & honoure of Gods feare commeth from God hym self. ²³ It is not we that can fynde oute the almighty for in power, equyte, and righteousnesse, he is hyer than can be expressed.

³ For I considre thy heauens, euen the worke of thy fingers: the moone & the starres which thou hast made. ⁴ Oh what is man, that thou art so myndfull of hym? either the sonne of man that thou visitest hym?

²² That he sytteth vpon the circle of the worlde, and that al the inhabytours of the worlde are in comparison of him, but as greshoppers: That he spredeth out the heauens as a coueryng, that he stretcheth them out, as a tent to dwell in: ²³ That he bryngeth Prynces to nothyng, and the iudges of the earth to dust:

⁹ but as farre as the heauens are hyer then the earth, so farre do my wayes exceade yours, and my thoughtes yours.

³ The Lorde suffreth longe, he is of greate power, & so innocent that he leaueth no man fautlesse before hym. The Lorde goeth forth in tempest and stormy wether, the cloudes are the dust of his fete.

³⁶ But who so offendeth agaynste me, hurteth hys owne soule. All they that hate me, are the louers of death.

¹² If thou be wyse thy wysdome shall do thy selfe good: but if thou thynckeste scorne therof, it shalbe thyne owne harme.

¹⁹ Howe be it they hurte not me (sayth the Lord) but rather confounde, and shame themselues.

¹⁴ For what am I? and what is my people? that we shulde obtayne strengthe to be so wyllynge? But all is of the, and of that we receyued of thyne hand we haue geuen the.

² May a man be compared vnto God in wysdome, though he seme to hym selfe, for to be lyke him? ³ What pleasure hath God in that thou art righteous? Or what doth it profyte him, that thy waies are perfecte?

² I haue saide vnto the Lord: thou art my God, my goodes are nothing vnto the.

¹⁰ So lykewyse ye, when ye haue done al those thinges: which are commaunded you, saye: we are vnprofytable seruauntes. We haue done that whiche was oure duetye to do.

³⁵ Other who hath geuen vnto hym fyrst that he myghte be recompensed agayne?

² And I wyll make of the a myghty people, and wyll blesse the, and make thy name greate, that thou maiste be a blessynge.

²⁴ If there be .l. ryghtwes wyth in the cyte, wylt thou destroy it & not spare the place for the sake of .l. rightwes that are therin? ²⁵ That be farre from the, that thou shuldest do after this maner, to sley the rightwes wt the wicked, & that the rightwes shuld be as the wicked: that be farre from the. Shulde not the iudge of all the worlde do acordynge to ryghte? ²⁶ And the Lorde sayde: If I fynde in Sodome .l. ryghtwes wythin the cytie, I wyll spare all the place for their sakes. ²⁷ And Abraham answered & sayd: behold I haue taken vpon me to speake vnto the Lord, & yet am but dust and asshes. ²⁸ What though there lacke .v. of .l. ryghtwes, wylt thou destroy al the cyte for lacke of .v.? And he sayde: If I fynde there .xl. and .v. I wil not destroy them. ²⁹ And he spake vnto hym yet agayn and sayd: what yf there be .xl. founde there. And he sayde: I wyll not do it for fourtyes sake. ³⁰ And he sayde: O let not my Lorde be angry, that I speake. What yf there be founde .xxx. there? And he sayde: I wyll not do it, yf I fynde .xxx. there. ³¹ And he sayd: Oh, se, I haue begonne to speake vnto my Lorde, what yf there be .xx. found there? And he sayd: I wyll not destroye them for twenties sake. ³² And he sayde: O let not my Lorde be angrye, that I speake yet, but euen once more oulye. What yf ten be found there? And he sayde: I wyll not destroy them for .x. sake. ³³ And the Lorde went hys waye as soone as he had left commimyng wyth Abraham. And Abraham returned vnto hys place.

²⁹ But yet when God destroyed the cyties of the region, he thought vpon Abraham: & sent Lot out from the danger of the ouerthrowinge, when he ouerthrewe the cyties where Lot dwelled.

¹ But yet the children of Israel trespased in the excommunicate thinges for Acan the sonne of Carmi, the sonne of Zabdi, the sonne of Zareh of the trybe of Iuda, toke of the excommunicate thinges. And the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote agaynst the chyldren of Israel. ² Then Iosua sent men from Iericho to Ai which is besyde Bethauen, on the eastsyde of Bethel, and spake vnto them, sayinge: gette you vp and vewe the countreye. And the men went vp and spyed oute Ai. ³ And returned vnto Iosua, and sayde vnto hym, let not all the people go vp, but let as it were a two or thre thousande men go vp and destroye Ai, and make not all the people to laboure thether, for they are but fewe. ⁴ And so there went vp thether about a three thousande men, whiche fledde before the men of Ai. ⁵ And the men of Ai smote of them vpon a thyrtye and sixe men. and chased them before the gates euen vnto Gabarim, and smote them in the goynge doune. And the hertes of the people were discouraged and mealted lyke water.

²⁰ Dyd not Acan the sonne of Zareth trespase in the excommunicate thinges, and wrath fell on all the congregacyon of Israel, so that he alone peryshed not for hys wyckednesse?

⁸ Therfore take .vij. oxen & .vij. rammes, and go to my seruaunte Iob: offre vp also for your selues a brentofferynge: & let my seruaunte Iob praye for you. Hym wyll I accepte, & not deale with you after youre folishnesse: in that ye haue not spoken the thynge whiche is right, like as my seruaunt Iob hath done.

²³ So he sayde he wuld haue destroyed them had not Moses hys chosen stand before him in that gappe: to turne awaye his wrathfull indignatyon, lest he should destroy them.

³⁰ Then stode vp Phynehes and executed iustice, and so the plage ceased.

¹⁸ For wysdome is better then harnesse: but one vnthryft alone destroyeth much good.

³⁰ And I soughte in the lande for a man, that woulde make vp the hedge, and set him selfe in the gappe before me in the landes behalfe, that I shoulde not vtterlye destroy it: but I coulde fynde none.

¹² he answered them: Take me, and cast me in to the sea, so shall it let you be in rest: for I wote, it is for my sake, that this great tempest is come vpon you.

²⁴ sayinge. Feare not Paule, for thou muste be broughte before Cesar. And lo, God hath geuen vnto the all that sayle wyth the.

⁷ By faythe Noe honoured God, after that he was warned of thynges whiche were not sene, and prepared the arcke to the sauynge of hys housholde, thorow the whiche arcke, he condemned the worlde, and became heyre of the rightuousnes that commeth by faythe.

²³ And she bare yet an other sonne, whom he called Elieser, sayinge: the God of my father is myne helper, and hath ryd me out of the handes of Pharao. And it chaunced in processe of tyme, that the kynge of Egypt dyed, and the chyldren of Israel syghed by the reason of labour and cried.

⁷ Then the Lorde sayed: I haue surelye sene the trouble of mi people which ar in Egipt, and haue heard their cry whyche they haue of their taskemasters. For I know theyr sorow,

⁹ Nowe therfore behold, the complaynt of the chyldren of Israel is come vnto me, and I haue also sene the oppression wherwyth the Egyptians oppresse them.

¹ And there arose a greate complaynte of the people, and of theyr wyues agaynst their brethren the Iewes. ² And there were some that sayde: oure sonnes and doughters are to manye, let vs take corne for them and eate, that we maye lyue. ³ Some sayde: let vs set oure landes, vyneyardes and houses to pledge, and take vp corne in the darth. ⁴ But some sayde: let vs borowe money of the kynges trybute for oure landes and vyneyardes. ⁵ Now are oure brethrens bodyes as oure owne bodyes and their children as oure chyldren: els shoulde we subdue oure sonnes and doughters vnto bondage, & some of oure doughters are subdued already, and no strength is there in oure handes, and other men shall haue oure landes and vyneyardes.

¹⁹ He ledeth awaye the Preastes in to captyuyte, and turneth the myghtye vpsyde downe.

¹² The whole cyty cryeth vnto the Lorde with syghynge, the soules of the slayne make their complainte. But God destroieth them not for al this,

²⁸ In so muche that they haue caused the voyce of the poore to come vnto hym, and nowe he heareth the complaynte of suche as are in necessite.

⁹ Is thyne arme then lyke the arme of God? Maketh thy voyce such a sound as hys doeth?

¹⁵ Breake thou the arme of the vngodly and malycyous, search out the wickednes which he hath done, that he maye perysh.

⁵ Now for the troubles sake of the oppressed, and because of the complainte of the poore I will vp (sayeth the Lord) I wil helpe them, & set them at rest.

² For thou (O God) art my strength: why hast thou shut me from the? Why go I then so heuely, whyle the enemye oppresseth me?

² Take hede vnto me & heare me, how piteously I mourne and complayne. ³ The enemye cryeth so, and the vngodly commeth on so fast: for they are mynded too do me some mischief, so maliciously are they set agaynst me.

¹ To the chaunter, vpon the domme stock doue: whiche flyeth ferre of, Michtam of Dauid, when the Phylystynes toke hym in Geth. Be mercifull vnto me (O God) for men will treade me doune: they are dayly fightynge and troublynge me. ² Myne enemyes treade me dayly vnder their fete, for they be many that proudly fighte agaynste me.

³ And there was a certaine wedowe in the same citie whiche came vnto hym saiynge: auenge of myne aduersarye. ⁴ And he woulde not for a whyle. But afterwarde he sayde to hym selfe, though I feare not God, nor care for man, ⁵ yet because thys wedowe troubleth me. I wil auenge her least at the least she come and hagge on me. ⁶ And the Lord sayed: heare what the vnrightuous iudge sayeth. ⁷ And shall not God aduenge his electe, which crye daye and nyghte vnto hym, ye though he defarre them?

¹³ And so Saul dyed for hys trespace that he trespaced agaynst the Lorde, in that he kept not the worde of the Lorde, and in that he asked councell of a woman that wrought with a sprite, ¹⁴ and asked not of the Lorde. And therfore the Lorde killed hym & turned the kyngdome vnto Dauid the sonne of Iesai.

²² And therto in the very tyme of hys tribulacion dyd kynge Ahaz trespace yet moare agaynst the Lorde. ²³ For he offered vnto the Gods of them of Damsaco whiche bette hym & sayd. because the Gods of the Siriens healpe them, therfore will I offer to them, that they maye helpe me also. But they were his destruccion & the destruccion of all Israel.

¹⁰ Hath he suche pleasure and delyte in the Almighty, that he darre alway cal vpon God?

²² For yf I wolde go aboute to please men, I knowe not, how sone my maker wolde take me awaye.

³ I wil open vnto the yet more of myne vnderstandynge, and proue my maker righteous.

¹³ As for suche as be fayned, dissemblers and ypocrytes, they heape vp wrath for them selues: for they call not vpon him, though they be hys presoners.

⁸ The Lorde hath promysed hys louynge kyndnesse daylye, therfore will I prayse him in the night season, and make my prayer vnto the God of my lyfe.

⁶ I called to remembraunce my song in the night, I communed wyth myne owne herte, and sought out my spirite.

⁶² At midnight stand I vp, to geue thanckes vnto the, for the iudgmentes of thy ryghtuousnesse.

⁵ Let the saynctes be ioyfull with glory, let them reioyse in their beddes.

¹ Remembre thy maker in thy youth, or euer the dayes of aduersitie come, and or the yeares drawe nye, when thou shalt saye: I haue no pleasure in them

²¹ Yf he do not thys, he stombleth & suffereth hunger. And yf he suffre hunger, he is out of pacience, and blasphemeth hys kynge and his God. Then loketh he vpwarde, and dounewarde to the earthe,

¹³ And forgettest the Lord that made the, that spred oute the heauens, & layde the foundacyon of the earthe. But thou arte euer afrayde for the syght of thyne oppressour whiche is ready to do harme: Where is the wrath of the oppressoure?

⁵ For he that made the, shalbe thy Lorde & husband (whose name is the Lorde of hostes) & thyne auenger shalbe euen the holy one of Israel, the Lorde of the whole worlde.

²⁵ At mydnyght Paule and Sylas prayed, & lauded God. And the prysoners hearde them.

¹⁹ Wherfore let them that suffer according to the wil of God, commit their soules to him with wel doing, as vnto a faythfull creator.

²⁶ And God sayde: let vs make man in oure similitude & after our lycknesse: that he may haue rule ouer the fysh of the sea, and ouer the foules of the ayre, & ouer catell, and ouer all the erth, and ouer all wormes that crepe on the erth.

⁷ Then the Lord God shope man, euen of the mould of the erth, & brethed into his face the breth of lyfe. So man was made a lyuyng soule.

⁸ Euery man (no doute) hath a mind but it is the inspiracion of the Almyghty that geueth vnderstandynge.

²² Behold God is of a myghtye hye power: Where is there soche a gyde and lawe geuer as he?

¹² Blessed is the man, whome thou learnest (O LORDE) and teacheste hym in thy lawe.

⁴¹ They cryed, but there was none to helpe them: yea euen vnto the Lorde, but he heard them not.

⁶ And this is the cause that they be so puft vp in pryde, and ouerwhelmed with crueltie & vnrighteousnesse. ⁷ Their eyes swell for fatnesse, they do euen what they lyst. ⁸ Corrupte are they, and speake blasphemyes maliciouslye, proude and presumpteous are their wordes.

³ Haue mercy vpon vs, O Lord, haue mercy vpon vs, for we are vtterly despysed. ⁴ Our soule is filled with the scornefull reprofe of the welthy, and wyth the despitefulnes of the proude.

²⁸ Then shal they call vpon me, but I will not heare: they shal seke me early, but thei shal not find me:

¹⁴ I wyll climme vp aboue the cloudes, and wylbe like the hyghest of all. ¹⁵ Yet darre I saye, that thou shalt be brought doune to the depe of hel. ¹⁶ They that se the, shal narowly loke vpon the, and thinke in them selues, sayenge: Is thys the man, that brought all landes in feare, and made the kyngedomes afrayde. ¹⁷ Is this he that made the worlde in a maner waste, and layde the cytyes to the grounde, whyche let not his prisoners go home?

³¹ For we be sure that God heareth not synners. But yf any man be a worshypper of God, and do hys wyl, hym heareth he.

²² Receyue the lawe at his mouth, & laye vp his wordes in thine hert. ²³ For yf thou wilt turne to the Almighty, thou shalt stande fast, & al vnrighteousnesse shalbe farre from thy dwellinge: ²⁴ He shall geue the an haruest, whiche in plenty & aboundance shall exceade the dust of the earth, and the gould of Ophir lyke riuer stones ²⁵ Yea, the almighty his own self shalbe thine haruest, and the heape of thy moneye. ²⁶ Then shalt thou haue thy delyte in the Almighty, & lift vp thy face vnto God. ²⁷ Then shalt thou make thy prayer vnto hym, and he shal heare the, and thou shalt kepe thy promises.

⁸ What hope hath the ypocrite, though he haue greate good, and though God geue him ryches after his hertes desire? ⁹ Doeth God hear him the soner, when he crieth vnto him in his necessite?

²⁰ When I crye vnto the, thou doest not heare me: & though I stande before the, yet thou regardest me not.

¹⁷ He turneth him vnto the prayer of the poore destitute, & despiseth not their desyre.

⁸ The Lorde aborreth the sacryfyce of the vngodlye, but the prayer of the rightuous is acceptable vnto hym.

²⁹ The Lorde is farre from the vngodly, but he heareth the praier of the rightuous.

⁹ He that turneth away his eare from hearing the lawe, his prayer shalbe abhorred.

¹ When thou commest into the house of God, kepe thy fote & draw nye, that thou mayest heare: that is better then the offeringes of fooles, for they knowe not what euell they do. ² Be not hasty with thy mouth, & let not thyne herte speake any thyng rashly before God. For God is in heauen, & thou vpon earth, therfore let thy wordes be few. ³ For where muche carefulnesse is, there are many dreames: and where many wordes are, there men may heare fooles.

¹⁵ Though ye holde oute your handes, yet turne I myne eyes from you. And though ye make manye prayers, yet heare I nothynge at all, for youre handes are full of bloude.

¹¹ Therfore thus sayth the Lorde: Beholde, I wyll sende a plage amonge you, whiche ye shall not be able to escape: and though ye crye vnto me, I wyll not heare you.

¹⁴ They call not vpon me with their hertes, but lye houlinge vpon their beddes. Where as they come together; it is but for meate and drincke, and me wil they not obeye.

² Israel can say vnto me thou art my God, we know the, ³ but he hathe refused the thinge that is good, therfore shall the enemy folow vpon him.

²² And though ye offre me brentofferynges, and meateofferynges, yet haue I no pleasure therein. As for youre fat thanckeofferinges, I wil not loke vpon them.

⁷ But when ye praye, bable not much as the Heathen do: for they thinke that they shalbe herde, for their muche bablynge sake.

²¹ And he saide vnto her: what wilt thou haue? She said vnto hym: Graunt that these my two sonnes maye sitte, the one on thy right hande, and the other on the lift hande in thy kyngdome ²² Iesus aunswered and sayde: Ye wotte not what ye are. Are ye able to drinke of the cup that I shall drynke of: and to be baptised with the baptisme that I shalbe baptised wt?

³ Ye axe and receyue not, because ye axe a mysse: euen to consume it vpon youre voluptuousnes

¹¹ If he came by me, I myght not loke vpon hym: yf he went his waye, I shulde not perceaue it.

¹⁹ If men wyll speake of strength, he is the strongest of all: yf men wyll speake of ryghtuousnes, who darre be my recorde.

⁷ Beholde, though I crye, yet violence is done vnto me, I can not be herde: Though I complane, there is none to geue sentence with me.

³ O that I might se him, and fynde hym. O that I myght come before his seat,

⁸ For though I go before, I fynde him not. Yf I come behynde, I can get no knowledge of him: ⁹ Yf I go on the left side to pondre his worckes, I can not atteine vnto them. Agayn, yf I go on the right syde, he hydeth him self, that I can not se him. ¹⁰ But as for my way, he knoweth it: & tryeth me as the goulde in the fyre.

¹² Delyuer me not into the wyles of myne aduersaryes, for there are false wytnesses risen vp against me, and they ymagyne myschyefe. ¹³ Neuerthelesse I beleue verelye to se the goodnesse of the Lorde in the lande of the lyuynge. ¹⁴ O tary thou the Lordes leisure, be strong let thyne hert be of good comfort, and wayte thou still for the Lorde.

⁵ Committe thy waye vnto the Lorde, sette thy hope in hym, and he shall brynge it too passe. ⁶ He shal make thy righteousnesse as cleare as the light, & thy iust dealynge as the noone daye.

⁵ Neuerthelesse, my soule abideth only vpon God, for he is my God.

⁸ O put your trust in him alway (ye people) poure oute youre hertes before hym, for God is our hope. Selah.

Or, hath he shut vp hys louynge kyndnes in dyspleasure? Selah. ¹⁰ At the last, I came to thys poynte, that I thought: O why art thou so folysh? the right hande of the moost hyest can chaunge all.

² Cloudes & darkenesse are round about him, righteousnesse & iudgement are the habitacion of hys seate.

¹⁸ Yet standeth the Lorde waytynge, that he maye haue mercye vpon you, and lyfteth hym selfe vp, that he maye receyue you to grace. For the Lorde God is ryghtuous. Happy are all they that wayte for him.

¹⁰ Therfore who so feareth the Lorde among you let hym heare the voyce of hys seruaunt, Who so walketh in darcknesse, and no lyghte shyneth vpon hym, let hym hope in the Lord, and holde hym by his God.

¹⁷ but al the weapens that are made agaynste the, shal not prospere. And as for all tunges, that shall resiste the in iudgement, thou shalte ouercome them, and condempne them. This is the herytage of the Lordes seruauntes, and the ryghtuousnes that they shal haue of me, sayeth the Lorde.

⁷ Neuerthelesse I wyll loke vp vnto the Lorde, I wyll pacyentlye abyde God my sauyoure: my God shall heare me. ⁸ O thou enemye of myne, reioyce not at my fal, for I shal get vp agayne: and thoughe I syt in my darckenesse, yet the Lorde is my lyght. ⁹ I wyl beare the punyshment of the Lorde (for why? I haue offended hym) tyll he sit in iudgement vpon my cause, and se that I haue ryghte. He wyll brynge me forth to the lyght, & I shall se hys ryghtuousnesse.

³³ Who shall laye anye thynge to the charg of Goddes chosen? It is God that iustifieth ³⁴ who then shall condempne? It is Christe whyche is dead, ye rather which is rysen agayne, which is also on the right hande of God, and maketh intercession for vs.

¹² And the Lorde spake vnto Moses & Aaron: bicause ye beleued me not to sanctify me in the eyes of the chyldren of Israel, therfore ye shall not brynge thys congregation into the land which I haue geuen them.

⁵ But nowe that the plage is come vpon the thou shrenkest awaye: now that it hath touched thy self, thou arte faynt harted.

¹⁴ How shulde I then answere him? or what wordes shulde I fynde out agaynst hym?

¹⁵ Lo, there is nether conforte nor hope for me, yf he wyll slaye me. But yf I shewe and reproue myne owne wayes in his syght,

¹⁵ Fearfulnesse is turned against me. Myne honoure vanysheth awaye more swyftly then winde, & my prosperite departeth hence lyke as it were a cloude. ¹⁶ Therfore is my minde poured full of heauynesse, & the dayes of trouble haue taken holde vpon me. ¹⁷ My bones are pearsed thorow in the nyghte season, & my sinewes take no rest. ¹⁸ Wyth all their power haue they chaunged my garment & gyrded me therwith, as it were wt a cote. ¹⁹ I am euen as it were claie, & am become like asshes and dust. ²⁰ When I crye vnto the, thou doest not heare me: & though I stande before the, yet thou regardest me not. ²¹ Thou art become mine enemy, & wyth thy violent hande thou takest part agaynst me. ²² In tymes past thou didest set vp me on hie, as it were aboue the wynde, but now hast thou geuen me a very sore fall. ²³ Sure I am, that thou wilt delyuer me vnto death: where as a lodgynge is prepared for all men lyuinge. ²⁴ Now vse not men to do violence vnto them, that are destroyed all ready: but where hurte is done, there vse they to helpe. ²⁵ Dyd I not wype in the tyme of trouble? Had not my soule compassion vpon the poore? ²⁶ Yet neuerthelesse where as I loked for good, euyl happened vnto me: and where as I wayted for lyghte, there came darkenesse. ²⁷ My bowels seeth within me, and take no reste, for the dayes of my trouble are come vpon me. ²⁸ Mekely & lowly came I in yea and without any displeasure: I stode vp in the congregacion, and communed with them. ²⁹ But now, I am a companion of dragons, & a felowe of Estriches. ³⁰ My skinne vpon me is turned to blacke, and my bones are brent with heate, ³¹ my harpe is turned to sorow and my pype to wepynge.

¹¹ Maye thy louynge kyndnes be shewed in the graue or thy faythfulnesse in destruccyon: ¹² May thy wonderous workes be knowne in the darcke, or thy ryghtuousnes in the land wher al thinges are forgotten? ¹³ Vnto the I crye, O Lorde, and early commeth my prayer before the. ¹⁴ Lorde, why putteste thou awaye my soule? Wherfore hydest thou thy face fro me? ¹⁵ My strength is gone for very sorow & myserye, wyh fearfulnesse do I beare thy burthens. ¹⁶ Thy wrathfull dyspleasure goeth ouer me the feare of the, oppresseth me.

³² I will vyset their offences wyth the rodde, and their synnes wit scourges.

⁸ What greate thinges haue I geuen the, O Ephraim? how faythfully haue I defended the, O Israel? haue I dealt wt the as with Adama? or haue I entreated the lyke Seboim? No, my herte is otherwyse minded. Yea, my mercye is to feruent: ⁹ therfore haue I not turned me to destroye Ephraim in my wrothfull displeasure. For I am God and no man, I am euen that holy one in the middest of the, thoughe I came not within the cyty.

²⁰ And behold thou shalt be dombe, and not able to speake vnto the tyme that these thinges be performed, because thou beleuest not my wordes whiche shalbe fulfylled in their ceason.

¹¹ No maner chastisynge for the presente tyme semeth to be ioyeous, but greuous: neuerthelesse afterwarde, it bryngeth the quyet frute of ryghtuousnes vnto them whiche are therein exercysed. ¹² Stretche forth therfore agayne the handes whiche were let doune and the weake lines

¹⁹ As manye as I loue, I rebuke and chastes. Be feruent therfore and repente.

¹ After thys opened Iob hys mouth, and, cursed his day

² Beholde, I wyl open my mouthe, and my tonge shall speake out of my chawes.

⁸ Now haste thou spoken in myne eares, and I haue heard the voyce of thy wordes: ⁹ I am clene withoute any faute, I am innocente, & there is no wyckednesse in me, ¹⁰ But lo, he hath pyked a quarell agaynste me, and taketh me for hys enemye, ¹¹ he hath put my fote in the stockes, & loketh narowlye vnto all my pathes. ¹² Beholde, vnto these vnreasonable wordes of thyne wil I make aunswere. Shulde God be reproued of man?

³⁵ As for Iob he hath nether spoken to the purpose nor wyselye. ³⁶ O father, let Iob be well tryed, because he hath turned hym self to the wycked: ³⁷ yea aboue hys synnes he hath blasphemed, whiche offence he hath done euen before vs, in that he stryueth against God with his wordes.
