¹ As there gathered together an innumerable multitude of people (in so muche that they trode one another) he began to saye vnto hys discyples: Fyrste of all beware of the leuen of the Phariseis, which is hypocrisye. ² For there is nothynge couered the shall not be vncouered: neyther hydde, that shall not be knowen. ³ For whatsoeuer ye haue spoken in darknes: that same shall be hearde in lyghte. And that whiche ye haue spoken in the eare, euen in secrete places, shall be preached euen on the toppe of the housses. ⁴ I saye vnto you my frendes: Be not afrayde of them that kyll the bodye, and after that haue no more that they can do. ⁵ But I wil shew you whom ye shall feare. Feare hym whiche after he hath kylled, hath power to caste into hell. Yea I saye vnto you, hym feare. ⁶ Are not fyue sparrowes bought for .ij. farthynges? And yet not one of them is forgotten of God. ⁷ Also euen the very heares of your heades are numbred. Feare not therfore: Ye are more of value then many sparowes. ⁸ I saye vnto you whosoeuer confesseth me before men, euen hym shall the sonne of man confesse also before the Angels of God. ⁹ And he that denyeth me before men, shalbe denied before the Angels of God. ¹⁰ And whosoeuer speaketh a worde agaynste the sonne of man it shall be forgeuen hym. But vnto hym, that blasphemeth the holy ghost, it shall not be forgeuen. ¹¹ When they brynge you vnto the synagoges and vnto the rulers and offycers take no thoughte, how or what thynge ye shall aunswere or what ye shall speake. ¹² For the holye ghost shal teache you in the same houre, what ye ought to saye. ¹³ One of the companye sayde vnto hym: Mayster byd my brother deuyde the enherytaunce with me. ¹⁴ And he sayde vnto hym: Man who made me a iudge or deuyder ouer you? ¹⁵ Wherfore, he sayde vnto them: take hede, and beware of coueteousnes. For no mannes lyfe standeth in the abundaunce of the thynges whiche he possesseth. ¹⁶ And he put forth a simylitude vnto them, sayinge. The grounde of a certayne ryche man brought forth frutes plenteouslye, ¹⁷ and he thoughte in hym selfe sayinge: what shall I do? because I haue no roume where to bestowe my frutes? ¹⁸ And he sayed: Thys will I do. I wyl destroy my barnes, and buylde greater, and therein wyll I gather all my frutes, and my goodes, ¹⁹ and I wyll saye to my soule: Soule thou hast muche goodes layde vp in store for many yeares: take thyne ease, eate, drinke, and be mery. ²⁰ But God sayed vnto hym: Thou fole, thys nyghte wyll they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall these thinges be which thou haste prouyded? ²¹ So is it with hym that gathereth ryches, and is not ryche in God. ²² And he spake vnto hys disciples: Therfor I saye vnto you: Take no thoughte for youre lyfe, what ye shal eate, neyther for your body what ye shal put on. ²³ The lyfe is more then meate, and the bodye is more then raymente. ²⁴ Consyder the rauens, for they neyther sowe, nor repe, which neyther haue store house nor barne, and yet God fedeth them. Howe muche are ye better then the fowles. ²⁵ Which of you with takynge thoughte can adde to hys stature one cubyte? ²⁶ Yf ye then be not able to do that thyng whiche is least: why take ye thoughte for the remnaunt? ²⁷ Consyder the lylyes howe they growe. They laboure not, they spin not, and yet I saye vnto you: that Salomon in all hys royaltte, was not clothed lyke to one of these. ²⁸ If the grasse whiche is to daye in the fielde and to morowe shalbe caste into the fornace, God so cloth: howe muche more wyl he clothe you, o ye endued with lytell faythe. ²⁹ And are not what ye shall eate, or what ye shall drinke, neyther climme ye vp an hye: ³⁰ for all suche thynges the heathen people of the worlde seke for. Your father knoweth that ye haue nede of suche thinges. ³¹ Wherfore seke ye after the kyngdome of God, and all these thynges shall be ministred vnto you. ³² Feare not litel flocke, for it is your fathers pleasure, to geue you a kingdom. ³³ Sell that ye haue, and geue almes. And make you bagges whiche were not old, and treasure that faileth not in heauen, where no these cometh, neyther mothe corrupteth. ³⁴ For where youre treasure is there wyll youre hertes be also. ³⁵ Let youre loynes be gerdde aboute, & your lyghtes brennynge, ³⁶ and ye youre selues lyke vnto men, that wayte for theyr maister, when he wyll returne from a weddyng: that assone as he commeth and knocketh, they may open vnto hym. ³⁷ Happye are those seruauntes, whom the Lorde when he commeth, shall fynde wakynge: Verely I saye vnto you, he wyll girde hym selfe aboute, and make them sytte doune to meate, & walke by, & mynyster vnto them. ³⁸ And yf he come in the seconde watche, yea yf he come in the thyrd watche, and shal fynd them so: happye are those seruauntes. ³⁹ Thys vnderstande, that yf the good man of the house knewe what houre that these would come, he woulde surely watche, and not suffer hys house to be broken vp. ⁴⁰ Be ye prepared therfore: for the sonne of man will come at an houre, when ye thynke not. ⁴¹ Then Peter sayd vnto hym: Mayster tellest thou thys similitude vnto vs, or to al men? ⁴² And the Lorde sayd: Yf there be any faithful seruaunte and wyse, whom hys Lorde shall make ruler ouer hys housholde, to geue them theyr dutye of meate at due season: ⁴³ happy is that seruaunt: whom hys mayster when he commeth, shall fynde so doinge. ⁴⁴ Of a truth I say vnto you: that he wyl make hym ruler ouer all that he hath: ⁴⁵ But and yf the euyll seruaunte shall saye in hys herte. My mayster wyll deferre hys commynge, & shall begynne to smyte the seruauntes, & maydens and to eate and drynke and to be droncken: ⁴⁶ the lorde of that seruaunte wyll come in a daye when he thynketh not: and at an houre when he is not ware, and wyll deuyde hym, & wyll geue hym hys rewarde with the vnbeleuers. ⁴⁷ The seruaunt that knewe hys maysters wyl, and prepared not hym selfe, neyther dyd accordynge to his will, shalbe beaten with many strypes. ⁴⁸ But he that knewe not, & yet dyd commytte thynges worthye of strypes, shalbe beaten with fewe stripes. For vnto whome muche is geuen, of him shalbe muche requyred. And to whom men muche committe, the more of hym will they axe. ⁴⁹ I am come to sende fyre on earth, & what is my desyre but that it were all ready kyndled? ⁵⁰ Notwithstandyng I muste be baptysed with a baptisme, and howe am I payned tyll it be ended? ⁵¹ Suppose ye that I am come to sende peace on earth? I tell you naye, but rather debate. ⁵² For from henceforth there shalbe fyue in one house deuyded, thre againste two, and two agaynst thre. ⁵³ The father shalbe deuyded agaynste the sonne, and the sonne agaynst the father. The mother agaynst her doughter, and the doughter agaynst the mother. The motherelawe agaynst her doughter lawe, and the doughterelawe agaynste her motherlawe. ⁵⁴ Then sayde he to the people: when ye se a cloude ryse out of the west, strayght waye ye saye. We shall haue a sower, and so it is. ⁵⁵ And when ye se the southe wynde blowe, ye saye: we shall haue heate, and it commeth to passe. ⁵⁶ Hypocrites, ye can skyll of the fashyon of the earth, and of the skye, but what is the cause that ye can not skyll of thys tyme? ⁵⁷ Ye and why iudge ye not of yourselues, what is ryghte? ⁵⁸ Whyle thou goest with thyne aduersarye to the ruler, as thou arte in the waye, geue dyligence that thou mayest be delyuered from hym, leaste he brynge the to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer the to the iayler, & the iayler cast the into pryson. ⁵⁹ I tell the, thou departest not thence, tyll thou haue made good the vttermoste myte.

¹⁷ And the kynge set the Lorde on whose hande he leaned, to kepe the gate. And the people troade hym in the gate, that he dyed, accordynge to the sayinge of the man of God whiche he sayde, when the kyng came doune to him.

⁵ the prayse of the vngodlye hath bene shorte, and that the ioye of ypocrites continued but the twyncklyng of an eye?

⁸ What hope hath the ypocrite, though he haue greate good, and though God geue him ryches after his hertes desire?

¹³ As for suche as be fayned, dissemblers and ypocrytes, they heape vp wrath for them selues: for they call not vpon him, though they be hys presoners.

¹⁴ The synners at Syon are afrayd a sodane fearfulnesse is come vpon the ypocrytes. What is he among vs (saye they) that will dwell by that consumynge fyre whyche of vs maye abyde that euerlastinge heate?

⁶ Then Iesus sayd vnto them: Take hede and beware of the leuen of the Phariseis and of the Saduces. ⁷ And thei thoughte in theim selues sayinge: because we haue brought no breade wyth vs. ⁸ When Iesus vnderstode that, he sayd vnto them? O ye of litle fayth, why are your myndes cumbred because ye haue brought no bread? ⁹ Do ye not yet perceyue, neither remember those fyue loues when there were .v.M. men, & how many baskettes toke ye vp: ¹⁰ Neyther the seuen loues when there were .iiij. thousand, and how many baskettes toke ye vp? ¹¹ Why perceyue ye not then, that I spake not vnto you of bread, when I sayde: beware of the leuen of the Pharises and of the Saduces. ¹² Then vnderstode they, howe that he had not them beware of the leuen of breade: but of the doctrine of the Phariseis and of the Saduces.

¹⁵ And he charged them sayng: Take hede of the leuen of the Phariseis, & of the leuen of Herode. ¹⁶ And they reasoned among them selues saying: we haue no bread. ¹⁷ And when Iesus knew that, he sayd vnto them: why take ye thought because ye haue no bread perceyue ye not yet, neyther vnderstande? Haue ye your hertes yet blynded? ¹⁸ Haue ye eyes and se not? and haue ye eares and heare not? Do ye not remember? ¹⁹ When I brake .v. loues among .v.M. How many baskettes ful of broken meate toke ye vp? They sayde vnto him twelue. ²⁰ When I brake seuen among .iiij. thousande. How many baskettes of the leuynges of broken meate toke ye vp? They sayde, seuen. ²¹ And he sayde vnto them: How is it that ye vnderstande not?

¹ It came to passe as the people preased vpon him to heare the worde of God, that he stode by the lake of Genezareth:

¹⁵ But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him, & much people came together to heare and to be healed of him, of their infirmyties.

¹⁷ And he came doune with them & stode in the playne fyelde with the companye of hys discyples, and a great multytude of people out of all partyes of Iurye and Ierusalem & from the sea coste of Tyre and Sydon, which came to heare hym, and to be healed of their disceases,

⁴⁴ Wo be to you scribes and pharyses, hypocrites, for ye are as graues which appere not, and the men that walke ouer them, are not ware of them.

⁵⁶ Hypocrites, ye can skyll of the fashyon of the earth, and of the skye, but what is the cause that ye can not skyll of thys tyme?

²⁰ And when they hearde it, they glorifyed the Lorde, and sayed vnto hym: thou seest brother, howe manye thousande Iewes there are that beleue, & they are all zelous ouer the lawe.

⁷ Pourge therfore the olde leuen, that ye may be new dowe, as ye are swete bread. For Christ oure easterlambe is offered vp for vs. ⁸ Therfore let vs kepe holy daye, not wyth olde leuen, neither with the leuen of malycyousnes and wyckednes, but with the swete bread of purenes and trueth.

³ For fyrste of al I deliuered vnto you that which I receiued how that Christe dyd for oure synnes, agreinge to the scriptures:

¹⁷ But the wysedome that is from aboue, is fyrste pure, then peasable, gentle, and easye to be entreated, full of mercye & good frutes, wythoute iudgynge, and wythout simulacyon:

¹ Wherfore laye a syde all malycyousnes, and all gyle, and dyssymulacyon, and enuye, and all backbytynge:

¹⁴ For God shal iudge all workes and secrete thynges, whether they be good or euell.

²⁶ Fear them not therfore. Therfore is nothinge so close, that shal not be opened, & nothing so hid, that shal not be knowen. ²⁷ What I tell you in darkenes, that speake ye in light. And what ye heare in the eare, that preache ye on the house toppes. ²⁸ And feare ye not them which kil the body, and be not able to kill the soule. But rather feare him, which is able to destroy both soule & body into hell. ²⁹ Are not two sparowes solde for a farthyng? And none of them doth lyght on the grounde, without your father. ³⁰ And now are all that heires of your heades numbred. ³¹ Feare ye not therfore: ye are of more value then many sparowes. ³² Whosoeuer therfore shall acknowlege me before men, hym will I acknowledge also before my father which is in heauen. ³³ But whosoeuer shall deny me before men, hym will I also deny before my father which is in heauen.

²² For there is nothyng so preuy, that shall not be opened: neyther so secrete, but that it shall come abroade.

¹⁷ Nothinge in secrete, that shall not come abrode: Neyther any thynge hyd that shall not be knowen, and come to light.

¹⁶ at the daye when God shall iudge the secretes of men by Iesus Christ accordynge to my Gospell.

⁵ Therfore iudge nothinge before the tyme vntill the Lorde come, who wyll lyghten thinges, that are hyd in darckenes, and open the counsels of the hertes. And then shall euery man haue praise of God.

¹⁰ For we muste all appeare before the iudgement seate of Christ, that euery man maye receyue the workes of hys bodye accordyng to that he hath done, whether it be good or badde?

¹¹ And I sawe a great whyte seate and hym that sate on it, from whose face fled away bothe the earthe & heauen, & theyr place was no more founde. ¹² And I sawe the deade, both great and small stande before God: & the bokes were opened, & an other boke was opened, which is the boke of lyfe, and the dead were iudged of those thynges: which were wrytten in the bokes accordyng to theyr deedes:

¹⁴ Tymely in the mornynge do they aryse, to murthur the simple and poore, & in the night they go a stealynge. ¹⁵ The eye of the vngodly is lyke the aduouterer, that wayteth for the darckenesse, & sayeth thus in hym selfe: Tush, there shall no man se me, & so he disgyseth his face.

¹² The wordes of out a wyse mans mouth are gracious, but the lippes of a fole wil destroy hym self. ¹³ The begynnyng of his talkynge is foolishnes, and the last worde of his mouth is great madnesse.

²⁰ Wyshe the kynge no euell in thy thoughte, and speake no hurte of the ryche in thy preuy chambre: for a byrde of the ayre shall betraye thy voyce, and wyth her fethers shall she bewraye thy wordes.

²⁷ What I tell you in darkenes, that speake ye in light. And what ye heare in the eare, that preache ye on the house toppes.

³⁶ But I say vnto you, that of euery idell worde that men shall haue spoken: they shall geue a countes at the daye of iudgement.

¹⁴ Enoch the seuenth from Adam, prophesyed fore of suche, saying: Beholde, the Lorde shall come wt thousandes of saynctes, ¹⁵ to geue iudgemente agaynst al men, & to rebuke al that are vngodly among them, of all theyr vngodly dedes, whiche they haue vngodlye commytted and of all theyr cruell speakynges; whiche vngodly synners haue spoken agaynste him.

¹ Come into my garden O my sister, my spouse: I haue gathered my Myrre with my spyce. I wil eate my hony and my hony combe, I will drinke my wyne and my mylke. Eate, O ye frendes, drynke & be mery, O ye beloued.

¹⁶ Hys throte is swete, yea, he is altogether louely. Such one is my loue, O ye daughters of Ierusalem, such one is my loue.

⁸ And thou Israell my seruaunte: Iacob my electe sede of Abraham my beloued,

⁷ Therfore herken vnto me, ye that haue pleasure in rightuousnes, thou people that bearest my lawe in thyne herte. Feare not the curse of men, be not afrayde of theyr blasphemies & reuylynges: ⁸ for wormes and mothes shal eate them vp lyke cloth and wol. But my ryghtuousnesse shall endure for euer, & my sauinge health from generacion to generacyon, ⁹ Wake vp, wake vp, and be strong: O thou arme of the Lorde: wake vp, lyke as in tymes paste, euer and sence the worlde beganne. ¹⁰ Arte not thou he, that haste wounded that proude lucyfer, & hewen the dragon in peces? Arte not thou euen he, whiche haste dryed vp the depe of the sea, whiche haste made playne the sea grounde, that the delyuered myght go thorow? ¹¹ That the redemed of the Lord, which turned agayne, myghte come wyth ioye vnto Syon, there to endure for euer? That myrthe and gladnesse might be with them, that sorow & wo myght fle from them? ¹² Yea I, I am euen he, that in all thynges geueth you consolacion. What arte thou then, that fearest a mortal man, the chylde of man, whiche goeth awaye as doeth the floure? ¹³ And forgettest the Lord that made the, that spred oute the heauens, & layde the foundacyon of the earthe. But thou arte euer afrayde for the syght of thyne oppressour whiche is ready to do harme: Where is the wrath of the oppressoure?

⁸ Be not afrayed of their faces, for I wilbe with the, to delyuer the, sayeth the Lorde.

¹⁷ And therfore gyrde vp thy loines, arise, and tell them al, that I geue the in commaundement. Feare them not, I will not haue the to be afrayed of them.

¹⁴ Nowe as for me: I am in youre handes, do wyth me, as ye thincke expedyent & good. ¹⁵ But thys shal ye know: yf ye put me to death ye shall make youre selues, thys cytye and al the inhabytours thereof, gyltye of innocente bloude. For thys is of a trueth: that the Lorde hath sente me vnto you, to speake al these wordes in youre eares.

⁶ Therfore (thou sonne of man) feare them not, nether be afrayed of their wordes: for they shall rebell agaynst the, and despyse the. Yee thou shalt dwell amonge scorpions: but feare not their wordes, be not abashed at their lokes, for it is a frowarde housholde.

¹⁶ Sidrach, Misach and Abednago aunswered the kynge, and sayde: O Nabuchodonosor, we oughte not to consente vnto the in this matter, for why: ¹⁷ oure GOD whome we serue, is able to kepe vs from the hote burnynge ouen (O kynge) and can right well delyuer vs oute of thy handes.

²⁸ And feare ye not them which kil the body, and be not able to kill the soule. But rather feare him, which is able to destroy both soule & body into hell.

¹⁴ Ye are my frendes, yf ye do whatsoeuer I commaunde you. ¹⁵ Henceforth call I you not seruauntes: for the seruaunt knoweth not what hys lorde doth. But you haue I called frendes, for all thynges that I haue heard of my father, I haue opened vnto you.

¹³ When they sawe the boldnes of Peter & Iohn and vnderstode that, they were vnlerned men and lay people, they meruailed, and they knew then that they were with Iesu:

²⁴ But none of these thinges moue me: neyther is my lyfe dere vnto my selfe: that I myght fulfyl my course with ioye, and the ministracyon whiche I haue receyued of the Lord Iesus, to testifye the gospell of the grace of God.

²⁸ and in nothing fearing your aduersaries: whiche is to them a token of perdicion, and to you of saluation, and that of God.

²³ and the scrypture was fulfylled whiche sayeth: Abraham beleued God, and it was reputed vnto hym for ryghtuousnes: and he was called the frende of God.

¹⁴ Notwithstanding happy are ye, yf ye suffre for ryghtuousnes sake. Yea and feare not though they seme terrible vnto you, neither be troubled,

¹⁰ Feare none of those thynges, which thou shalt suffre. Behold, the deuil shal caste of you into pryson, to tempte you, and ye shal haue tribulacion .x. dayes. Be faythful vnto the death, & I wyl geue the a croune of life.

¹⁷ The wicked must be turned vnto hell, & all the Heythen that forget God.

²⁶ The feare of the Lord in a strong hold for vnto his he wyl be a sure defence,

²² Feare ye not me, sayeth the Lorde? Are ye not ashamed, to loke me in the face? which bynde the sea wyth the sande, so that it can not passe hys boundes: For thoughe it rage, yet can it do nothynge, and thoughe the waues thereof do swell, yet maye they not go ouer.

⁷ Who wolde not feare the? Or what Kinge of the Gentyles wolde not obeye the. For amonge all the wyse men of the Gentyles, & in all their kyngdomes, there is none that maye be lickened vnto the.

²² but I sai vnto yow, whosoeuer is angre wt his brother without a cause shal be in daunger of iudgement. Whosoeuer saieth to his brother Racha, shalbe in daunger of a counsel. But whosoeuer saieth thou fole, shalbe in daunger of hel fire

⁴¹ Then shall the kinge saye vnto them that shalbe on the lyfte hande. Departe from me ye cursed, into euerlastinge fyre, which is prepared for the deuyll and hys angels.

⁴⁶ And these shall go into euerlasting payne. And the righteouse into lyfe eternall.

²³ But take ye hede: beholde I haue shewed you all thynges before.

⁶ that no man go to far and defraude his brother in bargaining: because the Lorde is a reuenger of al suche thinges as we tolde you before tyme and testified.

³¹ It is a fearfull thynge to falle into the handes of the lyuynge God.

⁴ For yf God spared not the aungels that sinned but cast them downe into hell, and deliuered them into chayns of darckenes, to be kept vnto iudgement,

⁷ sayinge with a loude voice: Feare God, & geue honoure to him, for the houre of his iudgemente is come, and worshyp hym, that made heauen and earth & the sea, & fountaynes of water.

⁴ Who shal not feare. O Lorde, & glorify thy name? For thou only arte holy and al Gentyls shal come and worshippe before the for thy iudgementes are made manifeste.

¹⁴ And death & hell were cast into the lake of fyre. Thys is that seconde death.

¹⁰ For all the beastes of the felde are myne, and thousandes of cattell vppon the hylles. ¹¹ I know al the foules vpon the mountaynes, and the wylde beastes of the felde are in my sight.

⁵ Who is lyke vnto the Lorde oure God, that hath his dwellynge so hye, ⁶ whyche humbleth him selfe, to beholde that is in heauen and earth.

¹⁵ The eyes of all wayte vpon the, and thou geuest them their meate in due season. ¹⁶ Thou openest thyne hande, and fyllest all thinges liuing with plenteousnesse.

⁹ Which geueth fodre vnto the cattell, and fedeth the yong rauens that call vpon hym.

⁴⁵ But the people sayde vnto Saul: shall Ionathas dye whiche hath so myghtely holpe Israel? God forbyd. As truly as the Lorde lyueth, there shall not one hearre of his head fal to the ground: for he hath wroughte with God thys daye. And so the people delyuered Ionathas, that he dyed not. And then Saule departed from folowyng the Philistynes.

¹¹ Then sayde she: let the kynge remember hys Lorde God, that the next of the bloude gather not on heapes together to destroye, and that they slaye not my sonne. And he sayde: as sure as the Lorde lyueth, there shall not one hearre of thy sonnes head fal to the earthe.

¹¹ Whiche geueth vs more vnderstandyng then he doth the beastes of the earthe, and teacheth vs more then the foules of heauen.

⁶ Thou haste set him aboue the workes of thy handes: and thou hast put all thynges in subiection vnder his fete.

³ For I am the Lorde thy God, the holy one of Israel, thy Sauyour. I gaue Egypte for thy delyueraunce, the Moryans, and the Sabees for the: ⁴ because thou wast deare in my sight, and because I set by the, and loued the. I pylled all men for the, & delyuered vp al people for thy sake,

²⁶ Behold the foules of the ayer: for the sowe not, neyther reape, nor yet cary into the barnes: and yet your heauenlye father fedethe them. Are ye not muche better then they?

³⁰ And now are all that heires of your heades numbred. ³¹ Feare ye not therfore: ye are of more value then many sparowes.

¹² And how muche is a man better then a shepe? Wherfore it is lawful to do a good dede on the saboth dayes.

¹⁸ Yet there shal not one heare of your heades perishe.

³⁴ Wherfore I praye you take meate: for thys no doubte is for your health: for there shall not an heire fal from the heade of anye of you.

³⁰ Wherfore the Lorde God of Israel sayth: I sayde that thyne house and the house of thy father shulde haue walked before me for euer. But now the Lorde sayth: that be farre from me: for them that worshyppe me, I wyll worshyp, & they that despyse me, shalbe despised.

⁴⁶ I wyll speake of thy testimonyes euen before kynges, and wyll not be ashamed.

³¹ When the sonne of man cometh in hys glorye, and all the holye aungels with him, then shall he sytte vpon the seate of his glory, ³² and before him shall be gathered all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shephearde deuideth the shepe from the gootes. ³³ And he shall set the shepe on his right haude, and the gootes on his lyfte. ³⁴ Then shal the kinge saye to them on his right hand. Come ye blessed chyldren of my father, enheryte ye the kingdome prepared for you from the begynninge of the worlde.

¹⁰ Lykewyse I saye vnto you ioye is made in the presence of the Angels of God ouer one synner that repenteth.

⁹ For yf thou shalt knoweledge with thy mouthe that Iesus is the Lorde, and shalte beleue with thyne herte that God raysed hym vp from death, thou shalte be safe. ¹⁰ For the beliefe of the herte iustifyeth: and to knoweledge with the mouth, maketh a man safe.

¹² Yf we be pacyente, we shal also raygne with hym. Yf we denye hym, he also shall denye vs

²³ Whosoeuer denyeth the sonne, the same hath not the father.

²⁴ Vnto hym that is able to kepe you, that ye fal not, and to preserue you fautles before the presence of hys glorye wyth ioye, ²⁵ that is to saye, to God oure sauyoure whiche onelye is wise be glorye maiestye, dominion and power, now and for euer. Amen.

¹³ I know thy workes, and where thou dwellest euen where Sathans seate is, and thou kepest my name, and hast not denyed my fayth. And in my dayes, Antypas was a faithful wytnes of myne whych was slaine among you, where Sathan dwelleth.

⁴ Thou hast a fewe names in Sardys, whyche haue not defyled their garmentes: and they shal walke wyth me in whyte, for they are worthy. ⁵ He that ouercommeth, shalbe clothed in whyte araye, and I wyll not put out hys name out of the boke of lyfe, and I wyll confesse his name before my father, and before his angels.

²³ And then will I knowledge vnto them, that I neuer knewe them. Departe from me, ye workers of iniquitie.

³³ But whosoeuer shall deny me before men, hym will I also deny before my father which is in heauen.

³⁸ Whosoeuer therfore shalbe ashamed of me and of my wordes, among this aduouterous and synfull generacion, of hym shall the sonne of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of hys father with the holy aungels.

²⁶ For whosoeuer is ashamed of me, and of my saiynges: of hym shall the sonne of man be ashamed, when he cometh in his owne glory, & the glory of his father, and of the holye aungels.

²⁶ Then shal ye begyn to say: We haue eaten, in thy presence and dronke, and thou haste taught in oure stretes. ²⁷ And he shall saye: I tell you I knowe you not whence ye are: departe frome me all ye workers of iniquitie.

¹³ The God of Abraham Isaac and Iacob, the God of our fathers hath glorified hys sonne Iesu, whom ye delyuered and denyed in the presence of Pylate, when he had iudged hym to be lowsed. ¹⁴ But ye denyed the holye and iuste: and desyred a mortherer to be geuen you

²⁸ And now babes abide in him, that when he shal appeare, we maye be bolde, and not be made ashamed of him at his comming:

⁸ I know thy workes. Beholde I haue set before the an open doore, and no man can shut it, for thou hast a lytel strength, and hast kept my saiynges: and hast not denyed my name,

³¹ Wherfore I saye vnto you, all maner of synne and blasphemy of forgeuen vnto men: but the blasphemy of the sprete, shall not be forgeuen vnto men. ³² And whosoeuer speaketh a worde against the sonne of man, it shall be forgeuen him. But whosoeuer speaketh againste the holye ghost, it shall not be forgeuen him: no, neyther in this worlde, neyther in the worlde to come.

²⁸ Verely I saye vnto you: al synnes shalbe forgeuen vnto mens children and blaspheme wherwith they blaspheme: ²⁹ But he that blasphemeth the holye ghost, shall neuer haue forgeuenes, but is in daunger of eternal damnacion, ³⁰ because they said: he had an vncleane spirite.

³⁴ Then said Iesus: father forgeue them, for they wote not what they do. And they parted his rayment, and cast lottes.

¹³ when before I was a blasphemer and persecuter, and a tyraunte. But I obtayned mercye, because I dyd it ignorauntly thorowe vnbelefe.

⁴ For it is not possible that they whiche were ones lyghted, and haue tasted of the heauenly gyft, and were become partakers of the holy ghoste, ⁵ and haue tasted of the good worde of God, and of the worlde to come: ⁶ yf they fall, shoulde be renued agayne vnto repentaunce: for as muche as they haue (as concernynge them selues) crucifyed the sonne of God a freshe makynge a mocke of hym. ⁷ For that earthe whiche drincketh in the rayne whiche commeth ofte vpon it, and bryngeth forth herbes mete for them that dresse it, receyueth blessynge of God. ⁸ But that ground which beareth thornes and bryars, is reproued, and is nye vnto curssynge: whose ende is to be burned.

²⁶ For yf we synne wyllyngly after that we haue receyued the knowledge of the trueth, ther remayneth no more sacryfyce for synnes, ²⁷ but a fearful lokynge for iudgement, and vyolente fyre, whyche shal deuoure the aduersaryes. ²⁸ He that despyseth Moyses lawe, dyeth wythout mercye vnder two or thre wytnesses ²⁹ Of howe muche sorer punyshement suppose ye shal he be counted worthy, whych treadeth vnder fote the sonne of God: and counted the bloud of the testament as an vnholy thynge wherwyth he was sanctyfyed, and doth dishonour to the spyryte of grace. ³⁰ For we knowe hym that hath sayde: vengeaunce belongeth vnto me. I wyll recompence sayth the lorde. And agayne: the lord shall iudge hys people. ³¹ It is a fearfull thynge to falle into the handes of the lyuynge God.

¹⁶ If any man se his brother synne a synne that is not vnto death, let him axe, and he shal geue him lyfe, for them that synne not vnto death. There is a synne vnto death, for which saye I not that a man shoulde praye.

¹⁷ Beware of men, for they shall delyuer you vp to the counsels, and shall stourge you in their synagoges. ¹⁸ And ye shalbe brought to the head rulers and kinges for my sake, in witnes to them & to the gentyls. ¹⁹ But when they deliuer you vp take no thought howe or what ye shall speake, for it shalbe geuen you, euen in that same houre, what ye shal saye. ²⁰ For it is not ye that speake, but the sprete of your father which speaketh in you.

³⁴ Wherfore, behold I send vnto you Prophetes, wise men, & Scribes. Of them ye shal kyl and crucifye: and of them ye shall scourge in your synagoges, and persecute from citye to citye

⁹ But take ye hede to your selues. For they shall brynge you vp to the counsels, and into the synagoges, & ye shall be beaten: ye & shalbe broughte forthe rulers & kynges for my sake for a testimoniall vnto them. ¹⁰ And the Gospel muste fyrste be publyshed amonge all nacyons. ¹¹ But when they leade you, and present you, take no thoughte afore hande, what ye, shal saye, neither ymagin: but whatsoeuer is geuen you at the same tyme, that speake. For it shall not be ye that shall speake, but the holy ghost.

²² And he spake vnto hys disciples: Therfor I saye vnto you: Take no thoughte for youre lyfe, what ye shal eate, neyther for your body what ye shal put on.

¹² But before all these, they shall laye their handes on you and persecute you, delyueringe you vp to the Synagoges & into pryson, and bringe you before kinges and rulers for my names sake. ¹³ And this shall chaunce you for a testimoniall. ¹⁴ Let it stycke therfore faste in your hertes, not once to studye before what ye shall aunswere:

⁵ And it chaunced on the morowe that theyr rulars, and elders, and scribes, ⁶ as Annas the chiefe Prieste, and Cayphas, and Iohn, and Alexander, and as many as were of the hye priestes gathered together at Ierusalem, ⁷ and set them before them, & axed: by what power or in what name haue ye done this syrs?

²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the counsell. And the chiefe prieste axed them ²⁸ saiynge: dyd not we straytely commaunde you, that ye shoulde not teach in this name. And behold ye haue fylled Hierusalem with your doctrine, and ye intended to brynge this mannes bloude vpon vs. ²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles aunswered & saied. We ought more to obey God, then men. ³⁰ The God of our father raysed vp Iesus whom ye slewe and hanged on tree. ³¹ Hym hath God lyfte vp with his ryght hand to be a ruler and a sauiour, for to geue repentaunce to Israell and forgeuenes of synnes? ³² And we are hys recordes concerninge these thinges, & also the holy ghost, whom God hath geuen to them that obey him.

⁹ Then arose certaine of the Synagoge, whyche are called Lybertines and Syrenites, and of Alexandria, and of Cilicia, and Asia, and disputed with Stephan. ¹⁰ And they could not resist the wysdome, and the spyryte wt whyche he spake. ¹¹ Then sent they in men, whiche said: we haue heard him speake blasphemous wordes against Moyses and against God. ¹² And they moued the people and the elders and the scribes: and came vpon him and caught hym, ¹³ and brought him to the counsell and brought forth false witnesses whiche sayde. This man ceaseth not to speake blaspemous wordes against thys holy place, and the lawe, ¹⁴ for we hearde him saie: this Iesus of Nazareth shall destroye this place, and shal chaung the ordinaunces, which Moises gaue vs. ¹⁵ And al that sate in the counsel loked stedfastlye on hym, and saw hys face as it had bene the face of an aungel.

¹¹ And the Lord sayed vnto hym: who hath made mans mouthe, or who hath made the dombe or the deaffe, the seynge or the blind? haue not I the Lord?

²⁰ For it is not ye that speake, but the sprete of your father which speaketh in you.

¹⁵ For I wyll geue you a mouthe and wisdome, where against all youre aduersaries shall not be able to speake nor resyste.

⁸ Then Peter full of the holy ghost sayed vnto them: ye rulars of the people, and elders of Israel,

² And he sayde: ye men, brethren, and fathers, harken to. The God of glorye appeared vnto our father Abraham whyle he was yet in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, ³ & saied to him: come oute of thy countrey & from thy kynred, and come into the lande, whiche I shall shewe the. ⁴ Then came he out of the lande of Chaldey, and dwelt in Charran. And after that assone as his father was dead he brought him into thys lande, in whiche ye now dwell, ⁵ and he gaue him none inheritaunce in it, no not the bredeth of a fote: but promised that he would geue it to hym to possesse, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no chylde. ⁶ God verely spake on this wyse that his sede should be a dweller in a straung land, & that they should kepe them in bondage & entreate them euyll .iiij.C. yeares. ⁷ But the nacion to whome they shalbe in bondage, will I iudge, sayed God. And after that shall they come forth and serue me in this place. ⁸ And he gaue hym the couenaunt of circumcision. And he begat Isaac, and circumcised him the .viij. daye and Isaac begatte Iacob, and Iacob the twelue Patriarches. ⁹ And the patriarches hauinge indignacion sold Ioseph into Egypt. And God was wyth him, ¹⁰ and deliuered him out of all his aduersities and gaue him fauoure and wysdome in the sight of Pharao kynge of Egypt, whiche made him gouerner ouer Egypte, and ouer al his houshold. ¹¹ Then came there a derth ouer all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, that our fathers founde no sustenaunce. ¹² But when Iacob hearde that there was crone in Egypt: he sent our fathers first. ¹³ And at the seconde tyme, Ioseph was knowen of hys brethren, and Iosephes kinred was made knowen vnto Pharao. ¹⁴ Then sente Ioseph and caused hys father to be brought and all his kyn, thre score and .xv. soules. ¹⁵ And Iacob descended into Egypte, and dyed both he and our fathers, ¹⁶ and were translated into Sichem, and were put in the sepulcher, that Abraham bought for money of the sonnes of Emor, at Sichem. ¹⁷ When the tyme of the promys drue nye, (which God had sworne to Abraham) the people grew and multiplied in Egypte, ¹⁸ tyll another kyng arose, whiche knew not of Ioseph. ¹⁹ The same dealt subtely wyth oure kynred, & euyll intreated oure fathers, and made them to caste out theyr yonge chyldren, that they should not remayne aliue. ²⁰ The same time was Moises borne, and was a proper chylde in the sight of God, whiche was nourished vp in hys fathers house thre monethes. ²¹ When he was cast out Pharaos doughter toke him vp, & nourished hym vp for her owne sonne. ²² And Moises was learned in al maner wysdome of the Egyptians, and was mighty in dedes and in wordes. ²³ And when he was full forty yeare old, it came into his herte to vysyte his brethren the chyldren of Israell. ²⁴ And when he sawe one of them suffer wronge, he defended hym and auenged his quarel that had the harme done to hym, and smote the Egyptian. ²⁵ For he supposed his brethren woulde haue vnderstande how that God by his handes should saue them. But they vnderstode not. ²⁶ And the nexte daye he shewed hym selfe vnto them as they stroue, and woulde haue set them at one againe saiyng: Syrs, ye are brethren, why hurte ye one another? ²⁷ But he that dyd his neighboure wronge, thrust him awaie sayinge: who made the a ruler and a iudge amonge vs? ²⁸ What, wilt thou kyll me, as thou dydest the Egyptian yester daye? ²⁹ Then fled Moyses at that saiyng, and was a straunger in the lande of Madyan, where he begatte two sonnes. ³⁰ And when .xl. yeares were expired, ther appeared to him in the wyldernes of mount Sina, an aungel of the Lord in a flamme of fyre in a bushe. ³¹ When Moyses saw it he woundred at the sight. And as he drue near to behold, the voice of the Lord came vnto hym. ³² I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob? Moises trembled and durst not behold. ³³ Then sayde the Lorde to him: Put of thy shewes from thy fete, for the place where thou standeste, is holye grounde. ³⁴ I haue perfectly sene the affliction of the people, which is in Egipt and I haue heard their groninge, & am come doune to deliuer them. And nowe come, and I wyl sende the into Egypte. ³⁵ This Moyses whom they forsoke saiyng: who made the a ruler and a iudge, the same God sente both a ruler and a deliuerer, by the handes of the angell, whiche appeared to him in the bushe. ³⁶ And the same brought them out shewing woundres and signes in Egypte, & in the red sea, and in the wildernes .xl. yeares. ³⁷ This is that Moises which said vnto the children of Israell: A Prophet shall the Lorde your God rayse vp vnto you of youre brethren, lyke vnto me, him shal ye heare. ³⁸ This is he that was in the congregation, in the wyldernes wyth the aungell, whyche spake to hym in the mounte Syna, and wyth oure fathers. This man receiued the worde of lyfe to geue vnto vs, ³⁹ to whom our fathers woulde not obey, but cast it from them, and in their hertes turned backe againe into Egipt, ⁴⁰ saiynge vnto Aaron: Make vs Gods to go before vs. For this Moises that broughte vs out of the lande of Egipte, we wote not what is become of him. ⁴¹ And they made a calfe in those dayes, and offred sacrifices, vnto the ymage, and reioysed in the workes of their owne handes. ⁴² Then God turned him selfe, and gaue them vp that they shoulde worship the starres of the skye, as it is written in the boke of the Prophetes. O ye of the house of Israell, gaue ye to me sacrifyces and meate offeringes by the space of .xl. yeare in the wildernes? ⁴³ And ye toke vnto you the tabernacle of Moloch, & the star of your God Remphan, figures which ye made to worshippe them. And I wil translate you beyonde Babylon. ⁴⁴ Our fathers had the tabernacle of witnes in the wildernes, as he had apoynted them speaking vnto Moyses, that he shoulde make it accordynge to the fashyon that he had sene, ⁴⁵ Whiche tabernacle our fathers receiued, and brought it in with Iosue into the possession of the Gentils, whiche God draue out before the face of our fathers vnto the tyme of Dauid. ⁴⁶ Which found fauour before God, and desired that he myght fynde a tabernacle for the God of Iacob. ⁴⁷ But Solomon buylt hym an house. ⁴⁸ Howe be it he that is hyest of all, dwelleth not in temples made with handes, as sayth the prophet: ⁴⁹ Heauen is my seate, and earth is my fotestole, what house wil ye builde for me sayed the Lorde? or what place is that I should reste in? ⁵⁰ hath not my hande made all these thinges. ⁵¹ Ye styfe necked, and of vncyrcumcysed hertes and eares, ye haue al wayes resisted the holye ghoste as your fathers dyd, so do ye. ⁵² Whyche of the prophetes haue not your fathers persecuted? And they haue slayne them, which shewed before of the comminge of the iuste whom ye haue nowe betrayed and mordred. ⁵³ And ye also haue receiued a lawe by the ordinaunce of aungels, and haue not kepte it.

⁵⁵ But he beynge full of the holye ghoste: loked vp stedfastly wyth his eyes into heauen, and sawe the glorye of God, & Iesus standynge on the ryghte hand of God,

¹ Agrippa sayd vnto Paule: thou art permitted to speake for thy selfe, Then Paule stretched forthe the hand, and aunswered for him selfe, ² I thinke my selfe happye kynge Agrippa, because I shall aunswere this day before the, of all thinges wherof I am accused of the Iewes, ³ namely because thou art exparte in all customes and questions, which are amonge the Iewes. Wherfore I beseche the to heare me paciently. ⁴ My liuinge of a childe, whiche was at the fyrst amonge myne owne nacion at Ierusalem, knowe all the Iewes, ⁵ whyche knew me from the beginninge if they woulde testyfye it. For after the most strayteste secte of oure laye, lyued I a phariseye, ⁶ and now I stand, & am iudged for the hope of the promis made of God vnto our fathers ⁷ vnto whyche promys our .xij. trybes instantlye, seruynge God daie and nighte hope to come. For whiche hopes sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Iewes. ⁸ Why should it be thought a thinge vncredible vnto you, that God shoulde raise agayne the dead? ⁹ I also verely thought in my selfe, that I ought to do manie contrarye thinges, clene agaynste the name of Nazareth, ¹⁰ which thinge I also dyd in Ierusalem. Where manye of the sainctes I shut vp in prison, and had receiued authorite of the hye priestes. And when they were put to death, I gaue the sentence. ¹¹ And I punyshed them ofte, in euerye synagoge, and compelled them to blaspheme, and was yet more madde vpon them, and persecuted them euen vnto straunge cities. ¹² Aboute which thinges as I wente to Damasco with authoryte and licence of the hye priestes, ¹³ euen at mydday (O king) I saw in the way alyght from heauen, aboue the bryghtnes of the sunne, shyne rounde aboute me, and them whyche iorneyed wyth me. ¹⁴ When we were all fallen to the earth: I heard a voice speakinge vnto me, and saiynge in the Hebrue tonge: Saul Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for the to kicke against the pricke. ¹⁵ And I said. Who art thou Lorde? And he sayd: I am Iesus whom thou persecutest, ¹⁶ but ryse and stand vp on thy fete. For I haue appeared vnto the for this purpose, to make the a minister, and a wytnes both of those thinges, whiche thou hast sene, and of those thinges in the which I wil appeare ¹⁷ vnto the deliuering the from the people, and from the gentils, vnto whiche nowe I sende the, ¹⁸ to open theyr eyes, that they myght turne from darckenes to lyght, and from the power of Satan vnto God: that they maye receiue forgeuenes of synnes, and inheritaunce amonge them whyche are sanctyfyed by fayth in me. ¹⁹ Wherfore kynge Agrippa I was not disobedient vnto the heauenly vision: ²⁰ but shewed fyrst vnto them of Damasco, and at Hierusalem and through out all the coastes of Iewry, and to the gentyls, that they should repent, & tourne to God, and do the ryght workes of repentaunce. ²¹ For this cause the Iewes caught me in the temple, and went aboute to kyll me. ²² Neuerthelesse I obtained helpe of God, and continue vnto this daye wytnessinge both to smal and to great, saiyng none other thinges, then those which the prophetes and Moyses dyd saye shoulde come ²³ that Christe shoulde suffer, and that he shoulde be the fyrste, that shoulde ryse from death, and shoulde shewe lyghte vnto the people, and to the gentyls. ²⁴ As he thus aunswered for him selfe, Festus saied with a loude voyce. Paul, thou art besides thy selfe. Muche learninge hath made the mad. ²⁵ And Paul saied: I am not mad, most deare Festus, but speake the wordes of trueth & sobernes. ²⁶ The kinge knoweth of these thinges, before whom I speake frelye, neither thinke I that anye of these thinges are hydden from hym. For this thinge was not done in a corner. ²⁷ Kinge Agrippa beleuest thou the prophetes? I wote well thou beleuest. ²⁸ Agrippa saied to Paule: Some what thou bringest me in mynd for to become a Christian, ²⁹ And Paul sayde: I would to God that not onlye thou: but also all that heare me to daye, were not some what onelye but altogether suche as I am, excepte these bondes. ³⁰ And when he had thus spoken: the kynge rose vp, and the debitie, and Bernice and they that sate with them. ³¹ And when they were gone aparte: they talketh betwene them selues saiyng. Thys man doth nothinge worthy of death, nor of bondes. ³² Then sayde Agrippa vnto Festus: Thys man might haue bene loused if he had not appealed vnto Cesar.

¹⁴ From the men of thy hande (O Lord) from the men of the worlde, which haue theyr porcion in this lyfe: whose bellyes thou fyllest with thy treasure. They haue chyldren at theyr desyre, and leaue the rest of of theyr substaunce for their babes.

³¹ These come vnto the, after the maner of a great people: yea my people syt doune before the, and heare thy wordes, but they do not there after: for in theyr mouthes they shewe them selues, as though they were feruent, but their herte goeth after theyr owne couetous lucre.

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his hert bringeth forth that which is good. And an euil man out of the euyll treasure of his herte bringeth forth that which is euyl. For of the aboundaunce of the herte, his mouth speaketh.

¹⁸ When Simon saw that thorow laiyng on of the Apostles handes on them, the holy ghoste was geuen, he offred them money ¹⁹ saiyng: Geue me also this power, that on whomsoeuer I put the handes, he may receiue the holy ghost.

⁵ and vayne disputacyons of men wyth corrupte myndes, and destytute of the trueth, whiche thynke that lucre is Godlines, from suche separate thy self.

¹⁴ And he answered: who hathe made the a ruler or a iudge ouer vs? intendest thou to kyll me, as thou kylledst the Egyptian? Then Moyses feared and sayed: of a suretye the thynge is knowen.

⁸ I wyll shewe the, O man, what is good, & what the Lorde requyreth of the: Namely, to do right, to haue pleasure in louynge kyndnesse, to be lowlye, and to walcke wyth thy God:

²⁰ When he sawe their faith, he sayed to him: man, thy sinnes are forgeuen the.

⁵⁸ And after a lytle while another sawe him and said: thou arte also of them. And Peter sayed: man I am not.

¹⁵ When Iesus perceiued that they woulde come, & take him vp to make him king, he departed againe into a mountaine him selfe alone.

¹¹ She sayed no man Lorde. And Iesus sayde: Neyther do I condempne the. Go, and synne no more.

³⁵ Pylate aunswered Am I a Iewe? Thyne owne nacyon and hye priestes haue delyuered the vnto me, What hast thou done? ³⁶ Iesus aunswered my kingdome is not of thys worlde. If my kingdome were of thys worlde, then woulde my mynisters surely fyght, that I shoulde not be delyuered to the Iewes, but now is my kyngdom not from hence.

¹ Therfore arte thou inexcusable (O man) whosoeuer thou be that iudgest. For in that same wherin thou iudgest another, thou condemnest thy selfe. For thou that iudgeste doest euen the same selfe thynges.

³ Thinkest thou this (O thou man that iudgeste them, whiche do suche thinges) and yet dost euen the very same, that thou shalt escape the iudgement of God?

²⁰ But O man, what arte thou whiche disputeste wyth God? Shall the worke saye to the workeman, why haste thou made me on thys fashion?

²¹ I sawe amonge the spoyle a goodlye Babylonyshe garment, and two hundred sicles of syluer, and a tonge of golde of fyftye sicles weyghte: and I coueted them, and I toke them. And beholde they lye hydde in the earthe in my tente and the syluer there vnder.

⁴ Sathan answered the Lorde, and sayde: Skynne for skynne? yee a man will geue all that euer he hath, for his lyfe.

²⁴ Haue I put my truste in goulde? Or haue I sayde to the fynest gould of all: thou art my confidence? ²⁵ Haue I reioysed because my substaunce was great, and because my hande gat so muche?

³ For the vngodly maketh bost of his owne hertes desyre, the couetous blesseth him selfe and blasphemeth the Lorde.

¹⁶ A small thinge that the righteous hath, is better then great ryches of the vngodly.

¹⁰ O trust not in wronge and robbery, geue not youre selues vnto vanitye: if ryches encrease, set not your herte vpon them.

³⁶ Enclyne myne herte vnto thy testymonies, and not to couetousnes. ³⁷ O turne awaye myne eyes, leste they behold vanite, and quycken me in thy way.

¹⁶ Better is a litle with the feare of the Lord then great tresure, for they are not without sorowe.

¹⁶ To haue wysdome in possesstion is better then gold, & to get vnderstanding is more worth then siluer.

⁴ Take not ouer greate trauayle and labour to be ryche, beware of suche a purpose. ⁵ Why wylt thou set thyne eie vpon the thing, which sodenly vanysheth awaye? For ryches make them selues wynges, & take their flight lyke an Aegle into the ayre.

¹⁶ Wher the prynce is wythout vnderstandyng, ther is greate oppression and wronge: but if he be such one as hateth couetousnesse he shall longe raygne.

⁶ One hand full (sayeth he) is better with rest, then bothe the handes full with labour and trauayle. ⁷ Moreouer, I turned me, & beholde yet another vanitie vnder the Sunne. ⁸ There is one man, no mo but him self alone, hauing neither childe nor brother: yet is there no ende of his carefull trauayle, hys eyes can not be satysfied with ryches, (yet doth he not remembre him selfe, & saye:) For whome do I take such trauayle? For whose pleasure do I thus consume away my lyfe? This is also a vayne & miserable thynge.

¹⁰ He that loueth money, will neuer be satisfied wyth money: and who so deliteth in ryches, shall haue no profit therof. Is not this also a vayn thyng? ¹¹ Where as much ryches is, there are many also that spende them away. And what pleasure more hath he that possesseth them, sauyng that he may loke vpon them with hys eyes? ¹² A labouryng man slepeth swetely, whether it be litle or much that he eateth: but the aboundaunce of the ryche wil not suffre him to slepe. ¹³ Yet is there a sore plague, whiche I haue sene vnder the sunne (namely) ryches kept to the hurt of him that hath them in possession. ¹⁴ For oft tymes they perishe with his greate misery & trouble: and if he haue a chylde, it getteth nothynge. ¹⁵ Lyke as he came naked out of his mothers wombe, so goeth he thyther agayn, and carieth nothing away with hym of all his labour. ¹⁶ This is a miserable plage, that he shal go away euen as he came. What helpeth it hym then, that he hath labored in the wynde?

¹³ For from the leaste vnto the moost, they hang all vpon couetousnes: & from the Prophet vnto the prieste, they go all aboute wyth falshed and lyes.

¹⁷ Neuertheles, as for thyne eyes & thine herte, they loke vpon couetousnesse, to shede innocent bloude, to do wronge and violence. ¹⁸ And therfore, thus sayeth the Lorde agaynst Iehoakim, the sonne of Iosiah kynge of Iuda: They shall not mourne for hym (as they vse to do) alas brother, alas syster: Nether shall they saye vnto hym: Alas syre, alas for that noble prynce.

² When they couet to haue lande, they take it by vyolence, they robbe men of their houses. Thus they oppresse a man for his house, & euery man for hys heretage.

⁹ Wo vnto hym, that couetouslye gathereth euyll gotten goodes into hys house: that he maye set hys neste an hye, to escape from the power of mysfortune.

²⁵ Therfore I saie vnto you, be not tareful for you life what ye shall eate or what ye shall dryncke, nor yet for your bodye, what ye shall put on, is not the lyfe more worthe then meate, and the body more of value then rayment? ²⁶ Behold the foules of the ayer: for the sowe not, neyther reape, nor yet cary into the barnes: and yet your heauenlye father fedethe them. Are ye not muche better then they?

²² theft, coueteousnes, wickednes, deceyte: vncleanenesse and a wicked eye, blasphemy, pryde, folishenes:

¹⁴ And that whiche fell amonge thornes, are thei which heare, and go forth, and are choked with cares and with ryches, and voluptuouse liuinge, and bringe forth no fruite.

¹⁴ All these thynges hearde the phariseis also which were couetous, and they mocked hym.

³⁴ Take hede to your selues, lest youre hertes be ouercome with surfetinge and dronkenes and cares of this worlde: and that that day come not on you vnwares.

¹⁰ And I meant not at al of the fornicatours of this worlde, eyther of the couetous, or of extorsioners, eyther of the ydolaters: for then muste ye nedes haue gone oute of the world. ¹¹ But nowe I writte vnto you, that ye companye not together, if anie that is called a brother be a fornicatour, or couetous, or a worshiper of ymages, eyther a raylar, either a drounkard, or an extorcionar: with him that is such, se that ye eate not.

¹⁰ neither theues, neythe couetous, neither dronkardes, neither cursed speakers, neither pyllars, shall inherete the kyngedome of God.

³ So that fornicacion and vncleanes, or couetousnes be not ones named amonge you, as it becommeth sainctes: ⁴ neyther fylthynes, neyther folyshe talkinge, neither gestinge whiche are not comely: but rather geuinge of thankes. ⁵ For this ye knowe, that no whormonger, other vncleane persone, or couetous person, whyche is the worshypper of Images, hath anye inheritaunce in the kyngdome of Christe and of God.

⁵ Mortifie therfore, youre members whiche are on the earth, fornicacion, vnclenes, vnnatural, lust euil concupiscence, and couetousnesse, which is worshippinge of Idolles,

⁶ Godlynes is greate ryches, yf a man be content with that he hath. ⁷ For we broughte nothynge into thys worlde & it is a playne case that we can carye nothyng out. ⁸ When we haue fode and raymente, let vs therwyth be content. ⁹ They that wyll be rych, fall into temptacyon and snares, and into many folysh and noysome lustes which drowne men in perdicyon and destruccyon. ¹⁰ For couetousnes is the rote of all euyll, whiche whyle some lusted after, they erred from the faythe and tangled them selues wyth manye sorowes.

² For the men shall be louers of theyr owne selues coueteous, bosters, proude, cursed speakers, dysobedyent to father and mother, vnthankefull, vnholye,

⁵ Let your conuersacyon be wythoute couetuousnes, and be content wyth that ye haue alreadye. For he verelye sayed: I wyll not fayle the, neyther forsake the:

³ and thorowe couetousnes shal they wyth fayned wordes make marchaundyse of you, whose iudgement is not farre of, and theyr dampnacion slepeth not.

¹⁴ hauinge eyes full of aduoutrye, and that can not cease to synne, begilinge vnstable soules. Hertes they haue exercised with couetousues. They are cursed children,

¹² And Isaac sowed in that lande, & found in that same yere an .C. bushels: for the Lorde blessed hym, ¹³ & the man waxed myghty, and went forth and grewe tyll he was exceading greate, ¹⁴ that he had possession of shepe, of oxen, and a mighty housholde: so that the Philistians had enuye at hym:

⁴⁷ And in the .vij. plenteous yeres they made sheues ⁴⁸ & gathered vp all the fode of the .vij. plenteous yeres whych were in the lande of Egypte & put it in to the cyties. And he put the foode of the feldes that grewe rounde about euery cyte: euen in the same. ⁴⁹ And Ioseph layde vp corne in stoore, lyke vnto the sande of the sea in multitude out of mesure, vntyll he left nombrynge: For it was wyth out nombre.

⁶ The houses of robbers are in wealth & prosperite, and they that maliciously medle agaynst God, dwell without care: ye God geueth all thinges rychely with hys hande.

³ And why? I was greued at the wicked, to se the vngodly in suche prosperitie.

¹² Lo, these are the vngodly, these prospere in the worlde, these haue ryches in possession.

⁸ But this woulde she not knowe, where as I yet gaue her corne, wyne, oyle, syluer & gold, whiche she hath hangeth vpon Baal.

⁴⁵ that ye may be the chyldren of youre father that is in heauen: for he maketh his sonne to aryse on the yuyll, and on the good and sendeth his raine on the iust and vniust.

¹⁷ Neuerthelesse he lefte not hym selfe without wytnes, in that he shewed hys benefytes, in geuynge vs rayne from heauen, and fruteful ceasons, fyllyng our hertes with fode and gladnes.

² Geue it awaye amonge seuen or eyghte, for thou knoweste not what mysery shall come vpon earth.

⁷ It pleaseth not me, tyll thou deale thy breade to the hungry, and brynge the poore fatherlesse home into thy house, when thou seyste the naked that thou couer him, and hyde not thy face from thyne owne fleshe.

⁴² Geue to hym that axeth, & from him that woulde borow tourne not away.

¹¹ He aunswered and sayd vnto theim: He that hath two cotes, let him parte with him that hath none, & he that hath meate let him do lykewyse.

²⁵ And beholde a certaine lawyer stode vp, & tempted hym, saiynge: Mayster what shall I do to enherite eternall lyfe?

⁴¹ Neuerthelesse geue almose of that ye haue, and beholde all is cleane to you.

²⁹ And are not what ye shall eate, or what ye shall drinke, neyther climme ye vp an hye:

³³ Sell that ye haue, and geue almes. And make you bagges whiche were not old, and treasure that faileth not in heauen, where no these cometh, neyther mothe corrupteth.

¹³ But when thou makest a feaste, call the poore the maymed, the lame, and the blynde, ¹⁴ & thou shalte be happy, for they can not recompence the. But thou shalte be recompensed at the resurreccyon of the iust men.

³ The stewarde sayde within hym selfe, what shall I do? for my mayster wyll take away from me the stewardshyppe. I can not dygge, and to begge, I am ashamed.

⁹ And I saye also vnto you: make you frendes, of the wycked mammon, that when ye shall depart, they maye receyue you into euerlastynge habitacyons.

²² When Iesus hearde that, he sayed vnto hym. Yet lackeste thou one thynge. Sell all that thou haste, and distrybute it vnto the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in heauen, and come, & folowe me.

¹⁷ And he sayde vnto hym. Well good seruaunte, because thou waste faythful in a very lytell thynge, take thou authoritye ouer ten cities.

³⁷ When they hearde this, they were prycked in their hertes, and sayd vnto Peter and vnto the other Apostles. Ye men and brethren, what shall we do?

³⁰ and brought them out and sayde: Syr what muste I do to be saued?

¹³ Distribute vnto the necessitie of the Saynctes, and be diligente to harboure.

⁶ Thys yet remember, howe that he whiche soweth lyttell, shal reape lyttell, & he that soweth plentuously, shall reape plentuously. ⁷ And let euery man do accordyng as he hath purposed in hys hert, not groundgingly, or of necessitie. For God loueth a chearefull geuer. ⁸ God is able to make you ryche in al grace that ye in al thynges hauyng suffycyent vnto the vttermoste, maye be ryche vnto all maner good workes, ⁹ as it is wrytten. He that sparsed abroade, and hath geuen to the pore, hys ryghtuousnes, remayneth for euer. ¹⁰ He that fyndeth the sower seed, shall minister breade for fode, and shall multyplye your seede and increace the frutes of youre ryghtuousnes that on all partyes, ¹¹ ye maye be made riche in all synglenes, whiche causeth thorowe vs, thankes geuynge vnto God. ¹² For the offyce of thys ministracyon, not onelye supplyeth the neede of the saynctes: but also is aboundaunte herein, that for thys laudable mynystrynge, thankes myghte be geuen to God of many, ¹³ whiche prayse God for the obedience of youre professyng the Gospell of Christe, and for youre synglenes in distrybutynge to them and to all men, ¹⁴ and in theyr prayers to God for you, long after you, for the aboundaunce grace of God geuen vnto you. ¹⁵ Thankes be vnto God for hys vnspakeable gyfte.

¹⁷ Charge them that are ryche in this worlde shal they be not exceadyng wyse, and that they truste not in the vncertayne ryches, but in the lyuyng God, which geueth vs aboundauntly al thynges to enioy them,

¹⁶ Hereby perceyue we loue, that he gaue hys lyfe for vs, & therfore oughte we also to geue our lyues for the brethren.

²¹ So is it with hym that gathereth ryches, and is not ryche in God.

⁴ And he woulde not for a whyle. But afterwarde he sayde to hym selfe, though I feare not God, nor care for man,

⁶ And the Lord sayed: heare what the vnrightuous iudge sayeth.

¹⁵ Thys wysedome descendeth not from aboue: but is earthye, & naturall, and deuelyshe:

¹⁵ For that ye oughte to saye: yf the Lorde wyll and yf we lyue, let vs do thys or that.

¹¹ & houses full of all maner goodes which thou filledest not, and welles dygged whych thou dyggedest not, & vynes & olyue trees which thou plantedest not, & when thou hast eaten and art ful: ¹² Then beware lest thou forget the Lorde whych brought the oute of the lande of Egipt the house of bondage.

¹² yea, & when thou hast eaten and fylled thy selfe and hast built goodly houses and dwelt therein, ¹³ & when thy beasse and thy shepe are waxed manye & thy syluer and golde is multiplied & al that thou hast encreased, ¹⁴ then beware lest thyne herte ryse & thou forget the Lorde thy God which brought the out of the land of Egypt the house of bondage,

¹ Man that is borne of a woman, hath but a shorte tyme to lyue, and is full of diuerse miseries.

¹¹ They sende forth their children by flockes, and their sonnes lead the daunce. ¹² They beare with them tabrettes and harpes, & haue instrumentes of musycke at their pleasure. ¹³ They spent their dayes in welthinesse: but sodenlye they go doune to hel.

⁵ Wherfore should I feare the euel dayes, when the wickednesse of my heles compaseth me rounde aboute? ⁶ They that put their trust in their good, & boast theym selfes in the multitude of theyr ryches. ⁷ No man may deliuer his brother, nor make agrement vnto hym for God. ⁸ For it costeth more to redeme their soules so that he must let that alone for euer. ⁹ Yea, though he liue longe, and se not the graue. ¹⁰ For it shalbe sene, that such wyse men shal dye and perysh together, as wel as the ignoraunt and folysh, and leue their goodes for other. ¹¹ Loke what is in their houses, it contynueth still: their dwellyng places endure from one generacion to another, and are called after their owne names vpon the earth. ¹² Neuerthelesse man abydeth not in suche honour, but is compared vnto the brute beastes, and becommeth lyke vnto them. ¹³ This waye of theirs is very folyshnesse, and yet their posteritie prayse it wyth theyr mouth. Selah.

¹⁸ Whyle he lyueth, he is counted an happy man: and so long as he is in prosperitie, men speake good of hym.

⁵ Therfore shall God cleane destroye the, smyte the in peces, pluke the out of thy dwellynge, and rote the out of the lande of the lyuynge. Selah. ⁶ The rightuous shal se this, and feare, and laugh him to scorne, ⁷ Lo, this is the man, that toke not God for his strength but trusted vnto the multitud of his riches, & was myghty in his wickednes.

¹¹ But the rich mans goods are his strong hold, yea he taketh them for an hie wall rounde aboute hym.

¹ Make not thy boaste of to morow, for thou knowest not what maye happen to day.

⁹ Be glad then (O thou yong man) in thy youth, and let thine herte be mery in thy yonge daies: folowe the wayes of thine owne herte, and the luste of thyne eyes: but be thou sure, that God shall brynge the into iudgement for all these thinges.

⁸ Wo be vnto you that ioyne one house to another, & bring one land so nyghe vnto another, tyll ye can get no more grounde. Wyll ye dwel vpon the earth alone?

¹¹ Wo be vnto them that ryse vp earlye to vse them selues in dronkennes, & yet at nyght are more superfluous wyth wyne.

¹³ But they to fulfil their lust and wilfulnes, slaughter oxen: they kyll shepe, they eate costly meate, and drincke wyne, let vs eate and drincke, to morow we shall dye.

⁸ Ephraim thinketh thus: Tush, I am ryche, I haue good ynoughe. In all my worckes shall not one fawte be founde, that I haue offended.

³ Ye are taken out for the euyll daye, euen ye that syt in the stole of wilfulnesse: ⁴ Ye that lye vpon beddes of Iuerye, and vse your wantonnesse vpon your rouches: ye that eate the beste lambes of the flocke, and the fattest calues of the droaue: ⁵ ye that singe to the lute, & in playenge of instrumentes compare youre selues vnto Dauid: ⁶ ye that drincke wyne oute of goblettes, and annoynte youre selues with the best oyle, but no man is sorye for Iosephs hurte.

¹⁶ Therfore offre they vnto theyr net, and do sacryfyce vnto theyr yarne: because that thorowe it theyr porcyon is become so fat, & theyr meate so plenteous.

¹⁹ Se that ye gater you not treasure vpon the earth, where ruste & mothes corrupte, & wher theues breake throughe & steale. ²⁰ But gather ye treasure together in heauen, where neither rust nor mothes corrupt, & where theues neyther breake vp nor yet steale. ²¹ For wher soeuer your treasur is, ther wyl your hertes be also.

¹⁹ There was a certayne ryche man, whiche was clothed in purple and fyne bysse, & fared delyciously euery daye,

³² That I haue fought wyth beastes at Ephesus, after the maner of men what auauntageth it me, yf the dead rise not againe? Let vs eate and drincke, to morowe we shall dye.

¹⁹ whose ende is dampnation, whose God is theyr belye, and whose glorye is to theyr shame, whiche are worldlye minded.

⁶ But she that lyueth in pleasure, is dead euen yet alyue.

⁴ traytours, headye, hye mynded, gredy vpon voluptuousnes more then the louers of God,

¹³ Go to nowe ye that saye: to daye, and to morowe let vs go into suche a cytye and contynue there a yeare and bye and sel, and wynne: ¹⁴ and yet can not tell what shall happen to morowe. For what thynge is youre lyfe? It is euen a vapoure that appeareth for a lyttel tyme, and then vanysheth awaye: ¹⁵ For that ye oughte to saye: yf the Lorde wyll and yf we lyue, let vs do thys or that.

¹ Go to nowe ye ryche men. Weepe, and howle on your wretchednes that shal come vpon you. ² Youre ryches is corrupte youre garmentes are motheaten. ³ Your gold and your siluer are cankered, & the ruste of them shal be a witnes vnto you, and shall eate your fleshe, as it were fyre. Ye haue heaped treasure together in your laste dayes:

⁵ Ye haue lyued in pleasure on the earth, & in wantonnes. Ye haue norished your hertes, as in a day of slaughter

³ For it is sufficient for vs, that we haue spent the time that is past of the lyfe, after the wil of the Gentiles, walking in wantonnes, lustes, dronckennes, in eatinge, drinkinge & in abominable Idolatrie.

⁷ And as muche as she glorified her selfe and lyued wantonly, so muche poure ye in for her of punishment, & sorowe, for she said in her herte: I sytte being a quene and am no wydowe, and shall se no sorowe.

⁹ And Moses spake vnto Aaron: Saye vnto al the company of the children of Israel, come forth before the Lord: for he hath hearde your grudgynges. ¹⁰ And as Aaron spake vnto the hole multitude of the chyldren of Israel, they loked toward the wyldernesse: & behold, the glorye of the Lord apeared in a clowde.

³⁶ And when Abigail came to Nabal: behold he helde a feaste in his house like the feast of a kynge, and Nabals herte was mery within him, and he was droncke a good. Wherfore she tolde hym naught nether lytle nor more, vntil to morow daye. ³⁷ But in the mornynge, when the wyne was gone out of Nabal, hys wyfe tolde him those wordes, and hys herte dyed within him, and he became as a stone, ³⁸ and vpon a ten dayes after the Lorde smote Nabal, that he dyed.

²⁸ Then Absalom commaunded hys younge men sayinge: marke when Amnons herte is mery wyth wyne, & when I byd you smyte Amnon then kyll him: feare not, for it is I that byd you, be bolde therfore, & playe the lustye bloudes. ²⁹ And the young men of Absalom serued Amnon euen as Absalom commaunded them. And al the kynges sonnes arose & toke eche man hys Mule & fled.

⁹ And hys seruaunt Zamri captayn of halfe his charettes, conspyred against him, as he was in Therzah drinkynge of strouge dryncke, in the house of Arza stuard of his house in Therzah. ¹⁰ And Zamri came and smote hym and killed him the .xxvij. yeare of Asa kyng of Iuda, and raygned in his steade.

¹¹ & tolde them of the glory of hys ryches, & the multitude of hys chyldren all together how the king had promoted him so greatly, and howe that he was taken aboue the princes and seruauntes of the kynge.

¹ The same daye dyd Kynge Ahasuerus geue the house of Haman the Iewes enemye, vnto quene Esther. And Mardocheus came before the kynge: for Esther told howe that he belongeth vnto her. ² And the king put of his finger ring, which he had taken from Haman, & gaue it vnto Mardocheus. And Esther set Mardocheus ouer the house of Haman.

²⁰ Hys bely could neuer be fylled, therfore shall he perish in his coueteousnesse. ²¹ He deuoured so gredely that he lefte nothinge behinde, therfore hys goodes shall not prospere. ²² Thoughe he had plenteousnesse of euery thynge, yet was he poore, and therefore he is but a wretche on euery syde. ²³ For though the wicked haue neuer so much to fyll his bely, yet God shall send his wrath vpon hym, and cause hys battaill to raygne ouer him:

¹⁶ Though he haue as muche money as the dust of the earthe, and raymente as ready as the claie, ¹⁷ he maye wel prepare it: but the godly shall put it vpon him, & the innocent shall deale oute the money.

⁶ Yea euery man walketh as it were a shadow, and disquieth him selfe in vayne: he heapeth vp ryches, and can not tell to whome he gathereth them.

¹⁷ For he shall cary nothynge away wyth hym when he dyeth, neither shall his pompe folowe hym. ¹⁸ Whyle he lyueth, he is counted an happy man: and so long as he is in prosperitie, men speake good of hym. ¹⁹ But when he foloweth his fathers generacion, he shall neuer se light any more.

¹⁹ O how sodenly do they consume, perysh, and come to a fearful ende?

³⁰ They were not disapoynted of their lust. But whyle the meate was yet in their mouthes:

⁴ Riches helpe not in the day of vengeaunce, but rightuousnes deliuereth from death.

⁸ Who so increaseth hys ryches by vauntage and wynnynge, let hym gather them to helpe the poore wyth al.

¹⁸ Yea I was weerye of al my laboure, which I had taken vnder the Sunne, because I shoulde be fayne to leaue them vnto another man, that commeth after me ¹⁹ for who knoweth, whether he shalbe a wyse man or afole? And yet shall he be lorde of al my laboures, which I wyth suche wysdome haue taken vnder the Sunne. Is not this a vayne thynge. ²⁰ So I turned me to refraine my mynd from all such trauayle, as I toke vnder the Sunne ²¹ for somuch as a man shuld weery hym selfe with wisdome, wt vnderstanding & oportunyte & yet be faine to leaue his laboures vnto another, that neuer swet. for them. This is also a vayne thinge and a greate miserie. ²² For what getteth a man of all the laboure and trauaile of his mind, that he taketh vnder the Sunne,

¹¹ The dysceytfull maketh a nest, but bryngeth forth no yonge. He commeth by ryches, but not ryghtuously. In the middest of his life must he leaue them behinde hym, and at the last be founde a very foole.

¹ Kynge Balthazar made a greate bancket to his thousand Lordes: with all these thousand he made great chere, ² & when he was droncken with wyne, he commaunded to brynge hym the golden and syluer vessels, whiche his father Nabuchodonosor had taken oute of the temple at Ierusalem, that the king and hys lordes with hys quene and concubynes might drincke thereoute. ³ So they broughte the golden vessell, that was taken oute of the temple of the Lordes house at Ierusalem. Then the kynge and hys lordes with his quene & concubynes droncke oute of them. ⁴ They droncke wyne, and praysed theyr Idoles of golde, syluer, copper, yron woodde and stone. ⁵ In the very same houre there apeared fyngers, as it had bene of a mannes hande wrytynge, ryght ouer agaynst the candelstycke vpon the playne wall in the kynges palace, & the kynge sawe the palme of the hande that wrote. ⁶ Then chaunged the kynge hys countenaunce, and hys thoughtes troubled hym, so that the ioyntes of hys bodye shoke, and hys knees smote one against the other.

²⁵ And thys is the scrypture, that is wryten vp: Mane, Thetel, Phares. ²⁶ Nowe the interpretacyon of the thynge is thys: Mane, God hath nombred the kyngdome, and brought it to an ende: ²⁷ Thetel, thou arte weyed in the balaunce and arte founde to lyghte: ²⁸ Phares, thy kyngdome is delte in partes, and geuen to the Medes and Perses. ²⁹ Then commaunded Balthazar, to clothe Daniel wyth purple, to hange a cheyne of golde aboute hys necke, and to make a proclamacyon concerning him: that he shulde be the ruler of the thyrde parte of hys kyngedome. ³⁰ The very same nyghte was Balthazar the kynge of the Caldees slayne,

¹⁰ For lyke as the thornes that sticke together, and as the drye strawe, so shall the dronckardes be consumed together, euen when they be full.

⁴⁸ But and if that euyll seruaunt shall saye in his herte, my maister wyll defer hys commynge, ⁴⁹ and begynne to smyte his felowes, yea, and to eate and to drinke with the dronken: ⁵⁰ that seruauntes maister wyll come in a daye when he loketh not for him, and in an houre that he is not ware of, ⁵¹ and wyll deuide hym, and geue him his rewarde with hipocrites. There shalbe weping and gnashing of tethe.

⁴⁰ Ye foles, dyd not he that made that which is without: make that whiche is within also?

²² And it fortuned that the begger dyed, and was caryed by the Angels into Abrahams bosome. The ryche man also dyed and was buryed. ²³ And beynge in hell in tormentes, he lyfte vp hys eyes, and sawe Abraham a farre of, & Lazarus in his bosome,

³ When they shal say peace and no daunger, then commeth on them soden destruccion, as the trauaylynge of a woman wyth chyld, and they shal not escape.

⁷ For we broughte nothynge into thys worlde & it is a playne case that we can carye nothyng out.

¹⁴ and yet can not tell what shall happen to morowe. For what thynge is youre lyfe? It is euen a vapoure that appeareth for a lyttel tyme, and then vanysheth awaye:

¹ Israel was a goodly vyne, but he hath brought forth vnprofytable frute: yea, the more frute he had, the mo aulters he made: the more good I dyd to their lande, the more frendshyppe shewed they to their Images.

¹⁹ Se that ye gater you not treasure vpon the earth, where ruste & mothes corrupte, & wher theues breake throughe & steale. ²⁰ But gather ye treasure together in heauen, where neither rust nor mothes corrupt, & where theues neyther breake vp nor yet steale.

²⁴ But wo be to you that are riche: for ye haue therin your consolacion.

¹¹ So then yf ye haue not ben faythfull in the wycked Mammon: who wyll beleue you in that which is true?

⁵ But thou after thyne harde herte that can not repente, heapeste the together the treasure of wrath againste the daye of vengaunce, when shall be opened the rightuous iudgement of God,

¹⁰ as sorowyng, & yet alway mery: as poore, and yet make many ryche: as hauynge nothynge, and yet possessynge all thynges.

¹⁸ and that they do good and be ryche in good workes, and readye to geue and to distrybute, ¹⁹ layinge vp in store for them selues a good foundacyon agaynste the tyme to come that they maye obtayne eternal lyfe.

⁵ Harken my deare beloued brethren. Hath not God chosen the pore of thys world, which are ryche in faythe, and heyres of the kyngedome whiche he promysed to them that loue hym?

⁹ I knowe thy workes and tribulacion and pouertye, but thou art rych: And I know the blasphemy of them, whiche call them selues Iewes and are not, but are the congregacion of Sathan.

²⁵ Therfore I saie vnto you, be not tareful for you life what ye shall eate or what ye shall dryncke, nor yet for your bodye, what ye shall put on, is not the lyfe more worthe then meate, and the body more of value then rayment? ²⁶ Behold the foules of the ayer: for the sowe not, neyther reape, nor yet cary into the barnes: and yet your heauenlye father fedethe them. Are ye not muche better then they? ²⁷ Whych of you (though he toke thoughte therfore) coulde put one cubit vnto hys statuture? ²⁸ And why care ye then for rayment? Considre the lylies of the filde, howe they growe. They laboureth not nether spynne. ²⁹ And yet for all that I saye vnto you that euen Solomon in all hys royaltie was not arayed lyke vnto one of these. ³⁰ Wherfore if God so clothe the grasse, which is to day in the felde, and to morowe shall be cast in to the fournace: shall he not much more do the same vnto you, o ye of lytle fayth? ³¹ Therfore take no thought saiynge: what shall we eate, or what shall we dryncke, or wherewith shal we be clothed? ³² After all these thynges seke the gentils. For your heauenlye father knoweth that ye haue neade of all these thynges. ³³ But rather seke ye first the kyngdome of heauen and the rightuousnes therof, & all these thynge shalbe ministred vnto you. ³⁴ Care not then for the morow, but let the morow care for itself: for the day present hath euer ynough of his owne trouble.

³² I would haue you without care. The single man careth for the thinges of the Lorde howe he maye please the Lorde.

⁶ Be not carefull: but in all thinges shewe your petition vnto God in prayer and supplication, wyth geuinge of thankes.

¹⁷ When they had brought them out, they sayde: Saue thy lyfe & loke not behynde the nether tary thou in any place of the countre, but saue thy selfe in the mountayn, lest thou perysshe.

¹² And the Lorde sayd vnto Sathan: lo all that he hath, be in thy power: only vpon hym self se that thou laye not thyne hande. Then went Sathan forth from the Lorde.

⁶ Then sayde the Lorde vnto Sathan: lo, there hast thou hym in thy power, but spare his lyfe.

⁸ With goodes euery man deliuereth his lyfe, and the poore wyll not be reproued.

¹⁸ The nexte daye, when we were tossed with an excedinge tempest, they lightened the shippe, ¹⁹ & the third daye we cast out with oure owne handes, the tacklinge of the shippe.

³⁸ And when they had eaten inough, they lyghtened the shippe, & cast out the wheate into the sea.

¹ And Eliah the Thesbite whyche was of the enhabiters of Galaad saide vnto Ahab: as truly as the Lorde God of Israel lyueth, before whome I stande, there shal be neyther dewe nor rayne these yeares, saue as I appoynt it. ² And the word of God came to him saying: ³ get the hence and turne the eastwarde, & hyde thy selfe in the broke Karith, that lyeth before Iordan, ⁴ dryncke of the ryuer for I haue commaunded the rauens to fede the herte. ⁵ And he went and dyd accordynge vnto the worde of the Lorde: he went and dwelt by the broke Karith that lyeth before Iordan. ⁶ And the rauens brought hym breade and fleshe euery mornyng and euery euenynge, and he drancke of the broke.

⁴¹ who prouydeth meate for the rauen, when his younge ones crye vnto God, and fle aboute for wante of meate?

³¹ Feare ye not therfore: ye are of more value then many sparowes.

²⁶ And the kynge was excedinge sory: howbeit, for his othes sake, and for their sakes, whiche sate at supper also, he woulde not put her beside her purpose.

⁷ Also euen the very heares of your heades are numbred. Feare not therfore: Ye are more of value then many sparowes.

³⁰ for all suche thynges the heathen people of the worlde seke for. Your father knoweth that ye haue nede of suche thinges. ³¹ Wherfore seke ye after the kyngdome of God, and all these thynges shall be ministred vnto you. ³² Feare not litel flocke, for it is your fathers pleasure, to geue you a kingdom.

³⁶ neither shalt thou sweare by thy head, because thou canst not make one whyte hear, or blacke.

²⁷ Whych of you (though he toke thoughte therfore) coulde put one cubit vnto hys statuture?

³ And he made meanes to se Iesus, what he shulde be, and coulde not for the prease, because he was of a lowe stature.

¹³ Consyder the worke of God, how that no man can make the thyng strayght whych he maketh croked.

⁷ Caste all your care to him: for he careth for you.

¹ And the quene of Saba hearde of the wysdome of Salomon concernyng the name of the Lord, and came to proue hym wyth rydelles. ² And she came to Ierusalem wyth a myghtye great multitude of Camels that bare swete odoures and goulde exceding much, & precious stones. And when she was come to Salomon, she communed wyth hym of all that was in her hert. ³ And Salomon expounded her all her questions, that there was not one thynge hyd from the kynge which he expounded her not. ⁴ And when the quene of Saba had sene all Salomons wysdome, & the house that he had buylt, ⁵ & the meate of hys table, & the syttynge of hys seruauntes, and the standynge of hys seruytours & their apparell, & his buttelers, & hys sacrifyce that he offered in the house of the Lord, she was astonyed. ⁶ Then she said to the kynge: the worde I hearde in myne owne land of thy dedes and wysdome, is true. ⁷ How be it I beleued it not, tyll I came and sawe it wyth myne eyes. And se, the one halfe was not told me: for thy wysdome and goodnesse exceadeth the fame which I hearde. ⁸ Happy are thy men: and happye are these thy seruauntes, whiche stande euer before the, and heare thy wysdom. ⁹ And blessed be the Lorde thy God which had a luste to the, to set the on the seate of Israell, because the Lorde loued Israel for euer, and therfore made the kynge, to do equite & ryghtuousnesse. ¹⁰ And she gaue the kynge an hundred and .xx. talentes of gould, and of swete odours excedinge moche, & precyouse stones There came neuer after such aboundaunce of swete odours as the quene of Saba gaue to kyng Salomon. ¹¹ And therto the shyppes of Hiram that brought goulde from Ophir, broughte from Ophir great plentye of Almuge tre & precyouse stones. ¹² And kynge Salomon made of the Almuge trees pyllers in the house of the Lord & in the kynges palace, & made harpes & Psalteryes for syngers There came no more Almuge tre so, nor was any more sene vnto this daye. ¹³ And kyng Salomon gaue vnto the Quene of Saba al her desyre that she asked of him besydes that he gave her with hys owne hand. And so she returned vnto her owne countrey wyth her seruauntes.

¹ And the quene of Saba heard of the fame of Salomon, and came to proue hym with ryddelles at Ierusalem, wyth a very great companye, & wyth camelles that bare swete odours and plentye of goulde & precyouse stone. And when she was come to Salomon, she communed with him of all that was in her herte. ² And Salomon foyled her all her questyons, that there was nothynge hyd from Salomon, which he tolde her not. ³ And when the quene of Saba had sene the wysdome of Salomon and the house that he had buylt, ⁴ and the meate of hys table and the syttynge of hys seruauntes and the standyng of hys wayters, and theyr apparell, and hys buttelars wyth theyr apparell, & his parlour out of which he went into the house of the Lord there was no more herte in her. ⁵ And then she said to the king: the sayinge which I hearde in myne owne lande, of thyne actes and of thy wysdome is truet ⁶ But I beleued not the wordes of them, vntyll I came & myne eyes had sene it. And se, the one halfe of thy wysdome was not tolde me: thou exceadest the fame that I heard, ⁷ happye are thy men, & happye are these thy seruauntes which stande before the all waye and heare thy wysdome. ⁸ Blessed be the Lorde thy God whiche had luste to the, to make the kyng on hys seat, vnto the Lorde thy God. Because thy God loued Israel, to make them contynue euer, therfore made he the kynge ouer them to do ryght and equyte. ⁹ And she gaue the kyng an hundred & .xx. talentes of goulde, and of swete odoures excedynge great aboundaunce wyth preciouse stones, that there was no suche swete odoures as the quene of Saba gaue kynge Salomon. ¹⁰ And therto the seruauntes of Hyram and the seruauntes of Salomon which brought gould from Ophir, broughte also Algume woode and precyouse stones. ¹¹ And the kynge made of the Algume wood steyares in the house of the Lorde and in the kynges palace, and harpes & psalteryes for syngers. And there was no suche woode sene before in the lande of Iuda. ¹² And Kynge Salomon gaue to the quene of Saba all her desyre that she asked aboue that she brought vnto the kyng. And so she turned and went awaye to her owne lande wyth her seruauntes.

¹⁰ and the ryche in that he is made lowe. For euen as the flower of the grasse, shal he vanysh away. ¹¹ The sonne riseth with heat, and the grasse widereth, and hys flower falleth awaye, & the beautye of the fashyon of it perysheth: euen so shal the ryche man peryshe wyth hys aboundaunce.

⁶ The same voyce spake: Now crye. And I sayde: what shall I crye? Then spake yt: that all flesh is grasse, and that all the bewtye therof, is as the floure of the felde.

³⁰ Wherfore if God so clothe the grasse, which is to day in the felde, and to morowe shall be cast in to the fournace: shall he not much more do the same vnto you, o ye of lytle fayth?

²⁶ And he sayed vnto them: why are ye fearfull, O ye of lytle fayth? Then he arose, and rebuked the wyndes and the sea, and there folowed a great calme.

³¹ And immediatly Iesus stretched forth his hande & caught him, & sayed to him. O thou litle fayth wherfore diddest thou doubt?

⁸ When Iesus vnderstode that, he sayd vnto them? O ye of litle fayth, why are your myndes cumbred because ye haue brought no bread?

¹⁷ Iesus aunswered and sayde: O generation faythles and croked: howe longe shall I be wt you? how longe shal I suffre you? bryng him hydder to me.

²⁰ Iesus sayd vnto them: Because of your vnbelefe. For I saye verely vnto you: if ye hadde faith as a grayn of a mustard seede, ye should say vnto thys mountayne, remoue hence too yonder place, and it shoulde remoue, neyther shoulde any thyng be impossible for you too do.

²⁵ And he sayed vnto them: Wher is your faythe? They feared and woundered saiynge one to another, what felowe is this: for he commaundeth both the windes & water, & they obey him?

²⁴ For all fleshe is as grasse, and all the glorye of man is as the floure grasse. The grasse wyddereth, and the floure falleth awaye,

³¹ Therfore take no thought saiynge: what shall we eate, or what shall we dryncke, or wherewith shal we be clothed?

⁷ And in the same house tary styll, eatynge and drinckynge suche as they haue. For the labourer is worthy of thys rewarde. Go not from house to house, ⁸ & into whatsoeuer citie ye enter, yf they receyue you, eate suche thynges as are set before you,

³⁵ And he sayde vnto them: when I sente you without wallet and scrip and shoes? lacked ye any thinge? And they saide no.

⁴⁷ And if ye be frendly to your brethren only what synguler thinge doo ye? Do not the publycanes likewyses?

¹ Take hede to your almes, that ye geue it not in the sight of men, to the intent that ye would be sene of them. Or els ye get no rewarde of youre father whyche is in heauen.

⁸ Be ye not lyke them therfore. For your father knoweth wherof ye haue neade, before ye axe of him

³² After all these thynges seke the gentils. For your heauenlye father knoweth that ye haue neade of all these thynges.

¹⁴ Euen so it is not the wil of your father in heauen, that one of these litelons shoulde perish.

³² Feare not litel flocke, for it is your fathers pleasure, to geue you a kingdom.

¹⁷ Iesus sayd vnto her touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to my father. But go to my brethren, & saye vnto them: I ascende vnto my father and youre father: to my God and your God.

¹⁷ Thys I saye therfore and testifye in the Lorde, that ye henceforth walke not as other Gentyles walke, in vanitie of theyr mynde,

⁵ and not in the luste of concupiscence, as do the heathen, which know not God,

² that he hence forwarde shoulde lyue as muche tyme as remayneth in the fleshe, not after the iustes of men, but after the wyl of God. ³ For it is sufficient for vs, that we haue spent the time that is past of the lyfe, after the wil of the Gentiles, walking in wantonnes, lustes, dronckennes, in eatinge, drinkinge & in abominable Idolatrie. ⁴ And it semeth to them a straunge thynge, that ye runne not also with them vnto the same excesse of riote, and therfore speake they euyl of you,

¹¹ Wherfore God said vnto him: because thou hast asked this thynge and hast not asked long life, nether hast asked ryches, nor the lyues of thyne enemies, but hast asked the discrecion to vnderstand equite. ¹² Se, I haue done accordynge to thy petycyon: and beholde: I haue geuen thy a wyse and an vnderstandynge hert, so that there was none lyke the before, nether after the shal any aryse lyke vnto the. ¹³ And therto I haue geuen the, that thou askedst not, bothe rychesse and honoure: so that there shalbe no kynge lyke the all the dayes.

⁹ O feare the Lord, ye that be hys sayntes: for they that feare hym, lacke nothyng.

³ Put thou thy trust in the Lorde, and be doyng good: so shalt thou dwel in the lande, & verely it shall fede the.

¹⁹ They shall not be confounded in the perlous tyme, and in the daies of derth thei shal haue ynough.

²⁵ I haue bene yonge, and now am olde: yet sawe I neuer the righteous forsaken, nor hys sede to seke their bread.

¹¹ For the Lord God is a light and defence, the Lorde wyll geue grace and worshyppe, and no good thynge shall he wytholde from them that lyue a godly lyfe.

¹⁶ He it is, that shall dwell on hye whose sauegarde shalbe in the true rocke, to him shal be geuen the right true meate and drincke.

³³ But rather seke ye first the kyngdome of heauen and the rightuousnes therof, & all these thynge shalbe ministred vnto you.

⁴² verelye one is nedefull. Marye hath chosen her that good part whiche shall not be taken away from her.

²⁷ Laboure not for the meate which perysheth, but for the meate that endureth vnto euerlasting lyfe, which meate the sonne of man shall geue vnto you. For hym hath God the father sealed.

³¹ What shall we then say vnto these thynges? yf God be on oure syde: who can be agaynste vs?

⁸ For bodely exercyse profyteth lytell: But godlynes is good vnto all thynges, as a thynge whiche hath promyses of the lyfe that is now, and of the lyfe to come.

⁷ Tell me (O thou whom my soule loueth) where thou fedest, where thou restest at the noone daye: lest I go wrong, and come vnto the flockes of thy companyons. ⁸ If thou knowe not thy selfe (O thou fayrest among women) then go thy waye forthe after the fotesteppes of the shepe, as though thou woldest fede thy goates beside the shepeherdes tentes.

¹¹ He shall fede his flock lyke an herdman. He shall gather the lambes together with his arme, and carie them in hys bosome, and shall kyndlye intreate those that beare yonge.

¹⁴ Be not a frayde thou lytle worme Iacob, & thou despysed Israell for I will helpe the, sayeth the Lorde, and the holy one of Israel thyne auenger.

⁶ As for vs, we go all astraye (lyke shepe) euery one turneth hys owne waye. But thorow hym, the Lorde pardoneth all oure synnes.

¹⁹ I haue shewed also, howe I toke the vp beynge but a chylde, & gaue the a pleasaunt lande for thyne heretage, yea & a goodly Hoste of the heathen: & how I commaunded the, that thou shouldest cal me father only, & not to shrynck from me.

¹⁵ Beware of false Prophetes, whiche come to you in shepes clothing, but inwardly they are rauenynge wolues.

²⁵ At that time Iesus aunswered and said: I prayse the, O father Lorde of heauen and earth, because thou hast hid these thinges from the wyse and prudent, and hast opened theim vnto babes: ²⁶ euen so father, for so it pleased the. ²⁷ All thinges are geuen vnto me of my father. And no man knoweth the sonne but the father: neyther knoweth anye man the father, saue the sonne, and he to whom the sonne wyl open hym.

²⁷ And straight way Iesus spake vnto them saing be of good cheare, it is I, be not afrayed.

¹² Howe thynke ye? If a man haue an hundred shepe, & one of them be gone astray, doth he not leaue nynty and nyne in the mountaynes, and go & seke that one whych is gone astraye. ¹³ If it happen that he fynde him, verely I say vnto you: he reioyseth more of that shepe, then of the nyntye and nyne, which went not astray. ¹⁴ Euen so it is not the wil of your father in heauen, that one of these litelons shoulde perish.

¹⁶ So the laste shalbe firste, and the first shalbe laste. For many are called, and few be chosen.

³⁴ Then shal the kinge saye to them on his right hand. Come ye blessed chyldren of my father, enheryte ye the kingdome prepared for you from the begynninge of the worlde.

²¹ That same time reioysed Iesus in the spirite, and sayde: I confesse vnto the father, Lorde of heauen and earth, that thou haste hyd these thynges from the wyse and prudente, and hast opened them to the babes. Euen so father for so pleased it the.

²⁶ But ye beleue not because ye are not of my shepe. As I said vnto you: ²⁷ my shepe heare my voice, & I know them, and they folowe me, ²⁸ and I geue vnto them eternall lyfe, and they shall neuer perish neyther shall any man plucke them out of my hande. ²⁹ My father whiche gaue them me, is greater then all, and no man is able to take them out of my fathers hande. ³⁰ And I and my father are one.

³⁶ Iesus aunswered my kingdome is not of thys worlde. If my kingdome were of thys worlde, then woulde my mynisters surely fyght, that I shoulde not be delyuered to the Iewes, but now is my kyngdom not from hence.

¹⁵ When they had dyned. Iesus sayd to Simon Peter: Simon Ioanna, louest thou me more then these? He sayd vnto him: ye Lorde thou knowest that I loue the. He saide vnto him: fede me lambes. ¹⁶ He saied to him again the seconde tyme? Simon Ioanna, louest thou me? He saied vnto him: yea Lorde thou knowest that I loue the. He saied vnto him: fede me shepe: ¹⁷ He saied vnto him the thyrde tyme: Simon Ioanna, louest thou me? And Peter sorowed, because he saied to him the thirde time, louest thou me, and said vnto him: Lord, thou knowest all thinge: thou knowest that I loue the. Iesus sayd vnto him: fede me shepe.

²³ For the rewarde of sinne is death: but eternal lyfe is the gyfte of God, thorow Iesus Christ oure Lorde.

²⁸ For we knowe that all thynges worke for the beste vnto them that loue God, whyche also are called of purpose. ²⁹ For those which he knewe before he also ordeyned before, that they shoulde be like fashioned vnto the shape of hys sonne that he myght be the fyrste begotten sonne amonge manye brethren. ³⁰ More ouer whiche he appointed before, them he also called. And which he called, them also he iustified, whiche he iustified, them he also glorifyed. ³¹ What shall we then say vnto these thynges? yf God be on oure syde: who can be agaynste vs? ³² whyche spared not his owne sonne but gaue hym for vs all: how shall he not wyth hym geue vs all thynges also?

⁵ And ordeyned vs before thorowe Iesus Christe to be heyres vnto hym selfe, according to the pleasure of hys wyll, ⁶ to the prayse of the glory of hys grace, wherewith he hath made vs accepted in the beloued. ⁷ By whome we haue redemption thorowe hys bloude, euen the forgeuenes of synnes accordyng to the ryches of hys grace ⁸ he shedde on vs aboundauntlye in all wysdome & perseueraunce. ⁹ And hath opened vnto vs the misterye of hys wyll accordyng to hys pleasure and purposed the same in hym selfe

¹³ For it is God, whyche worketh in you, both the wyll and also the dede, euen of good wyl.

⁵ whiche is a token of the ryghtuouse iudgement of God that ye are counted worthye of the kyngdome of God, for whiche ye also suffer.

¹¹ Wherfore we praye alwayes for you that oure God make you worthye of the callynge and fulfyll al delectacyon of goodnes and the worke of fayth, wyth power

²⁸ Wherfore yf we receyue a kingdom which is not moued, we haue grace, wherby we may serue God, and please hym wyth reuerence & Godly feare.

³ Blessed be God the father of oure Lorde Iesus Christe, whiche thorowe his aboundaunt mercye begat vs agayne vnto lyuely hope by the resurreccyon of Iesus Christe from death, ⁴ to enioye an enherytaunce immortall & vndefyled, and that putryfyeth not, reserued in heauen for you, ⁵ whiche are kept by the power of God thorowe fayth, vnto saluacyon, whiche saluacyon is prepared all ready to be shewed in the laste tyme,

¹¹ Yea and by this meanes an entringe in, shalbe minystred vnto you aboundantlye into the euerlastinge kingdome of oure Lorde and sauiour Iesus Christ.

⁶ & made vs kinges and priestes vnto God his father: be glorye and dominyon for euer more. Amen.

⁵ And there shalbe no nyght there, and they nede no candel neyther lyghte of the sunne: for the Lorde geueth them lyghte, & they shall rayne for euermore.

⁶ ye sowe muche, but ye bryng lytle in: ye eate, but ye haue not ynoughe: ye drincke, but ye are not fylled, ye decke youre selues, but ye are not warme: and he that earneth any wage, putteth it in a broken purse.

²¹ And Iesus sayde vnto him, if thou wilt be perfecte go and sell that thou haste, and geue it to the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in heauen, and come and folowe me.

⁶ Thys sayed he, not that he cared for the poore, but because he was a thiefe, and kepte the bagge, and bare that whiche was geuen.

⁴⁵ and solde their possessions and goodes, and departed them to all men as euery man had nede.

³⁴ Neyther was there anye amonge them that lacked. For as manie as were possessours of landes and houses, sold them and broughte the price of the thinges, that were solde, ³⁵ and layed it doune at the Apostles fete. And distribution was made vnto euery man accordinge as he had nede.

² howe that the aboundaunce of theyr reioysynge is, that they are tryed with muche trybulacyon. And therto thoughe they were excedynge poore, yet haue they geuen excedynge richelye, and that in synglenesse.

¹⁷ Charge them that are ryche in this worlde shal they be not exceadyng wyse, and that they truste not in the vncertayne ryches, but in the lyuyng God, which geueth vs aboundauntly al thynges to enioy them,

²¹ For wher soeuer your treasur is, ther wyl your hertes be also.

²⁰ But oure conuersation is in heauen, from whence we loke for a sauiour, euen the Lorde Iesus Christ,

¹ If ye be then rysen agayn with Christ seke those thinges which are aboue where Christe sitteth on the right hand of God. ² Set youre affeccion on thinges that are aboue, and not on thinges, which are on the earth. ³ For ye are dead and youre lyfe is hid with Christ in God.

⁴⁶ And the hande of the Lorde was on Eliah, and he gyrdled vp hys loynes and ranne before Ahab, tyl they came to Iezrahel.

¹⁷ Heth. She gyrdeth her loynes with strength, and courageth her armes.

²⁷ There is not one faynte nor feble amonge them, no not a slogyshe nor sleperye personne. There shall not one of them put of the gyrdle from hys loynes, nor louse their lachet of his shue.

⁵ Ryghteousnesse shalbe the gyrdle of his loynes, truthe & faythfulnesse, the gyrdynge vp of hys raynes.

¹⁶ Let your light so shyne before men that they maye se your good workes, and gloryfye your father which is in heauen.

¹ Then the kingdome of heauen shalbe lykened vnto ten virgins, which toke their lampes and went to mete the bridegrom,

⁴ But the wise toke oyle with them in their vessels with their lampes also. ⁵ Whyle the brydegrome taried, al slombred and slepte. ⁶ And euen at midnight there was a crye made: beholde, the brydegrome cometh, goo out againste hym. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and prepared their lampes. ⁸ And the folishe sayed to the wise: gyue vs of your oyle for oure lampes go out. ⁹ But the wyse aunswered sayinge not so, least there be not ynough for vs and you: but go rather to them that sell & by for your selues. ¹⁰ And whyle they went to bye the brydegrome came: and they that were redie, went in wyth hym to the weddinge, and the gate was shut vp.

¹⁴ Stande therfore, and your loynes gyrde about wyth veritie, hauinge on the breste plate of rightuousnes,

¹⁵ that ye maye be fauteles & pure, the sonnes of God wythout rebuke, in the middes of a croked and a peruerse nacyon, amonge whiche se that ye shine as lightes in the worlde,

¹³ Wherfore gyrde vp the loynes of youre myndes, be sober, and trust perfectelye on the grace that is broughte vnto you, by the declarynge of Iesus Christe,

¹⁸ After thy sauynge loke I Lord.

⁵ so that I stode vp to open vnto my beloued. My handes dropped with Myrre, & the Myrre ranne doune my fingers vpon the locke. ⁶ Neuerthelesse when I had opened vnto my beloued, he was departed and gone his waye. Now lyke as afore tyme when he spake, my hert coude not longer refrayne: Euen so now I soughte hym, but I coulde not fynde hym: I cryed vpon him, neuerthelesse he gaue me no aunswere.

⁴ For sence the beginninge of the worlde there was none (except thou O God) that hearde or perceyueth, neyther had anye eye sene, what thou dost for them, that put their trust in the.

²⁵ Teth. O how good is the Lord vnto them, that put their truste in him, & to the soule that seketh after him? ²⁶ O how good is it with stylnesse to wate & tarye, for the health of the Lorde?

¹ And Iesus answered, and spake vnto them agayne in symylytudes sayinge. ² The kyngdome of heauen is like vnto a certayne kynge, whiche maryed hys sonne, ³ and sent forth hys seruauntes to call them that were byd to the wedding, & they woulde not come. ⁴ Agayne he sent forth other seruauntes saynge. Tell them which are bydden: beholde I haue prepared my dyner, myne oxen and my fatlynges are kylled, and all thinges are redy, come vnto the mariage. ⁵ But they made lyght of it, and went theyr wayes: one to hys ferme place, an other about hys marchaundyse, ⁶ the remnaunt toke hys seruauntes and intreated them vngodly and slewe them. ⁷ When the kynge hearde that, he was wrothe and sente forthe hys warryers and destroyed those murtherers and brent vp theyr citie. ⁸ Then sayde he to hys seruauntes: the wedding was prepared. But they which were bidden: were not worthye. ⁹ Go ye therfore out into the hye waies, & as many as ye finde byd them to the mariage. ¹⁰ The seruauntes went out into the hye wayes, and gaddered together as many as they could fynde. Both good & bad, and the weddynge was furnyshed with gestes. ¹¹ Then the kynge came in, to viset the gestes, and spyed there a man which had not on a weddynge garment, ¹² and sayd vnto hym, frend howe fortuned it that thou camest in hyther, and hast not on a weddinge garmente? And he was euen speachlesse. ¹³ Then sayed the kynge to hys mynisters: take and bynde hym hande and fote, and caste hym into vtter darcknes, there shal be weping and gnashing of teeth. ¹⁴ For manye are called and fewe be chosen.

⁴² Wake therfor, because ye knowe not what houre your maister wyl come. ⁴³ Of this be sure, that if the good man of the house knewe what houre the these woulde come, he would suerlye watche, and not suffer his house to be broken vp. ⁴⁴ Therfore be ye also redye, for in the houre ye thinke he woulde not, wyll the sonne of man come.

³⁴ As a man whiche is gone into a straunge countreye, and hath left hys house, and geuen authorite to his seruauntes, and euerye man hys worke, and commaunded the porter to watche. ³⁵ Watche therfore, for ye knowe not when the mayster of the house wyll come: whether at euen, or at mydnyght: whether at the cocke crowynge or in the dawnynge, ³⁶ leste yf he come sodenlye, he shoulde fynde you slepynge. ³⁷ And that I saye vnto you: I saye vnto all men, watche.

²⁵ And beholde ther was a man in Hierusalem whose name was Symeon. And the same man was iuste and feared God, and longed for the consolacion of Israel and the holye ghost was in him. ²⁶ And an aunswere was geuen him of the holye ghost, that he shoulde not se death, before he had sene the Lordes Christe. ²⁷ And he came by inspiration into the tempell. And when the father and mother broughte in the childe Iesus, to do for him after the custome of the lawe, ²⁸ then toke he him vp in hys armes and sayed. ²⁹ Lorde. Nowe lettest thou thy seruaunt departe in peace, accordinge to thy promes. ³⁰ For mine eyes haue sene the sauiour sent from the.

⁷ Be ye pacyente therfore brethren, vnto the commynge of the Lord. Behold the husbande man wayghteth for the precious frute of the earth & hath long pacience therevpon, vntyll he receyue (the early and the latter rayne.) ⁸ Be ye also pacyent therfor, and setle your hertes, for the commynge of the Lorde draweth nye.

¹³ Notwithstanding I thinke it mete, (as long as I am in this tabernacle) to stere you vp by puttynge you in remembraunc ¹⁴ for as muche as I am sure how that the tyme is at hande, that I must put of my tabernacle, euen as our Lord Iesus Christ hath shewed me. ¹⁵ I wil enforce therfore that on euerye syde ye myght haue wherwith to stere vp the remembraunce of these thynges after my departinge.

²⁰ But ye dearely beloued, edifye your selues in your moste holy faythe, praying in the holye ghost, ²¹ and kepe your selues in the loue of God, lokynge for the mercye of oure Lorde Iesus Christe, vnto eternall lyfe.

²⁰ Behold I stande at the dore and knocke. Yf anye man heare my voice and open the dore. I wil come in vnto him, and will suppe with him, and he wyth me.

⁵ And lyke as a younge man taketh a doughter to mariage, so shall God mary him selfe vnto thy sonnes. And as a brydegrome is glad of his bride, so shall God reioyse ouer the.

⁴¹ Yea I wyll haue a lust and pleasure to do them good, and faythfully to plante them in this lande, with my whole herte, and with al my soule.

¹⁷ for the Lorde thy GOD is with the, it is he that hath power to saue: he hath a specyall pleasure in the, & a maruelous loue towarde the: yea, he reioyseth ouer the wyth gladnesse.

⁴² Wake therfor, because ye knowe not what houre your maister wyl come.

⁴⁵ Yf there be anye faythful seruaunt and wyse, whome his maister hath made rueler ouer his housholde to geue them meate in season conuenient: ⁴⁶ happy is that seruaunt whom his maister (when he cometh) shall fynde so doyinge. ⁴⁷ Verelye I saye vnto you, he shall make hym ruler ouer all hys goodes.

²⁰ Then came he that had receyued .v. talentes, and brought other .v. talentes, sayinge: maister thou delyuerest vnto me fyue talentes beholde I haue gained with them fyue talentes mo. ²¹ Then his maister sayde vnto him: Well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faythfull in litle, I wyll make the rueler ouer muche enter in into thy maisters ioye. ²² Also he that receiued .ij. talentes, came and sayed mayster thou deliuerest vnto me twoo talentes, beholde I haue won two other talentes with them. ²³ And his maister sayde vnto hym, well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faithfull in litle, I wyll make the ruler ouer much: go in into thy maisters ioye.

⁴³ happy is that seruaunt: whom hys mayster when he commeth, shall fynde so doinge.

⁸ and woulde not rather say to him: dresse, wherwith I may suppe, and gyrde vp thy selfe, and serue me, til I haue eaten and droncken, & afterwarde eate thou, and drinke thou:

³⁶ Watche therfore contynuallye and praye, that ye may obtayne grace to flye all this that shal come, and that ye may stande before the sonne of man.

²⁶ If any man minister vnto me, let hym folowe me, and where I am, there shal also my minister be. And yf any man minister vnto me, hym wyll my father honoure.

⁴ he rose from supper, and layde asyde hys vpper garmentes, & toke a towell, and gyrde hym selfe. ⁵ After that poured he water into a bason, & began to wash hys discyples fete, and to wype them wyth a towell, wherewith he was gyrde.

⁹ But as it was written: The eye hath not sene, and the eare hath not hearde, neither haue entred into the herte of man the thinges, which God hath prepared for them that loue him.

²¹ For Christe is to me lyfe, and death is to me auauntage.

²³ I wote not. I am constrayned of two thinges: I desire to be lowsed and to be wyth Christe, whiche thinge is best of all.

⁷ I haue fought a good fyght, and haue fulfylled my course, and haue kepte the fayth. ⁸ From henceforth is layde vp for me a croune of ryghtuousnes which the Lorde that is a ryghtuous iudge shall geue me at that daye: not to me only, but vnto all them that loue hys comynge.

¹ The elders whiche are amonge you, I exhorte, whiche am also an elder, and a wytnes of the affliccions of Christe, and also a partaker of the glory that shallbe opened, ² se that ye fede Christes flocke, which is amonge you, takinge the ouersight of them, not as though ye were compelled therto, but wyllingly, not for the desire of fylthy lucre, but of a good minde, ³ not as though ye were Lordes ouer the parishes, but that ye be an ensample to the flocke. ⁴ And when the chiefe shephearde shal appere, ye shal receiue an incorruptible crowne of glorie.

¹⁴ Wherfore dearly beloued, seynge that ye loke for such thinges, be diligent that ye may be found of hym in peace, wythout spotte and vndefyled

²¹ To hym that ouercommeth, wyl I graunt to sit with me in my seate euen as I ouercame and haue sitten wyth my father, in his seate.

¹⁷ For the lambe, which is in the middes of the seate shall feede them, and shall leade them vnto fountaynes of lyuinge water, and God shall wype awaye al teares from theyr eyes.

³ And they songe as it were a newe songe, before the seate, & before the foure beastes, & the elders, & no man coulde learne the songe, but the hundred and .xliiij.M. which were redemed from the earth. ⁴ These are they, whiche were not defyled wt women for they are virgins. These folowe the lamb whether so euer goeth. These were redemed from men being the fyrst frutes vnto God & to the lamb,

¹³ And I heard a voice from heauen, sayinge vnto me: wryte. Blessed are the dead, whyche here after dye in the Lorde euen so sayth the spyryte, that they may reste from their laboures, but their workes shal folowe them.

⁶ And euen at midnight there was a crye made: beholde, the brydegrome cometh, goo out againste hym.

⁴ But ye brethren are not in darckenes, that that daye shoulde come on you as it were a thefe. ⁵ Ye are all the chyldren of lyght and the chyldren of the daye. We are not of the nyghte neither of darckenes.

¹⁹ Se that ye gater you not treasure vpon the earth, where ruste & mothes corrupte, & wher theues breake throughe & steale.

² for ye youre selues knowe perfectly that the daie of the Lorde shall come euen as a thefe in the nyght. ³ When they shal say peace and no daunger, then commeth on them soden destruccion, as the trauaylynge of a woman wyth chyld, and they shal not escape.

¹⁰ Neuertheles the daye of the Lord wyl come as a thiefe in the nyght in the which daye, the heauens shal peryshe wyth terryble noyse, and the elementes shal melte wyth heate, and the earth wyth the workes that are therin shal burne.

³ Remember therfore howe thou hast receiued and hearde, and hold faste & repent. Yf thou shalt not watche, I wyl come on the as a thiefe, and thou shalt not knowe, what hour I wil come vpon the.

¹⁵ Beholde I come as a thefe. Happye is he that watcheth & kepeth his garmentes, least he be founde naked, and men se hys filthynes.

⁴⁴ Therfore be ye also redye, for in the houre ye thinke he woulde not, wyll the sonne of man come.

¹³ watche therfore: for ye knowe neither the daye nor yet the houre when the sonne of man shall come.

¹¹ Thys also we knowe, I meane the season, howe that it is tyme, that we should now awake oute of slepe. For nowe is oure saluacyon nearer, then when we beleued.

¹⁴ but put ye on the Lorde Iesus Christ. And make not prouysyon for the fleshe, to fulfyll the lustes of it.

⁶ Therfore let vs not slepe as do other: but let vs watche & be sober.

¹² lokynge for and hasting vnto the comminge of the daye of God, in which the heauens shall perishe with fyre, & the elementes shalbe consumed wyth heat. ¹³ Neuertheles we loke for a new heauen and a newe earth, accordinge to his promys, wherin dwelleth rygtuousnes. ¹⁴ Wherfore dearly beloued, seynge that ye loke for such thinges, be diligent that ye may be found of hym in peace, wythout spotte and vndefyled

⁷ Let vs be glad & reioyse & geue honour to him, for the mariage of the lambe is come, and hys wyfe made her selfe readye.

³⁷ And that I saye vnto you: I saye vnto all men, watche.

³⁷ And he came, and founde them slepynge, and sayd to Peter: Symon slepest thou? Couldest not thou watche wt me one houre?

⁷ The ende of al thinges is at hande. Be ye therfore discrete and sober, that ye maye be apt to prayers.

⁸ Be sober and watch, for your aduersary the deuyll as a roringe Lyon walketh aboute, sekinge whom he may deuour,

²³ O howe ioyfull a thing is it, a man to geue a conuenyente answere? O how pleasaunt is a word spoken in due season.

⁴ The Lorde God hath geuen me a wel learned tunge, so that I can comforte them whiche are troubled, yea & that in due ceason. He waked myne eare vp by tymes in the mornynge (as the scolemasters do) that I myght herken.

⁴ I wyll sett shepherdes also ouer them whiche shall fede them. They shall no more feare and drede, for there shall none of them be loste, sayeth the Lorde.

³ Ye haue eaten vp the fatte, ye haue clothed you wyth the wol: the best fedde haue ye slayne, but the flocke haue ye not noryshed.

⁵² Then sayd he vnto them. Therfore euery Scribe which is taught vnto the kyngdome of heauen is lyke an housholder, whiche bringeth forth, out of his treasur, thinges both new & old.

⁸ When euen was come, the Lorde of the vineyarde sayde vnto hys Stewarde: call the labourers, and geue them their hyer, beginning at the laste, tyll thou come to the first.

¹³ And when the Lorde sawe her, he had compassyon on her and saide vnto her, wepe not.

¹ And he sayed also vnto his disciples. There was a certayne ryche man which had a steward that was accused vnto him: that he wasted hys goodes. ² And he called hym, and sayde vnto hym: Howe is it, that I heare thys of the? Geue a comptes of thy stewardshyppe. For thou mayest be no longer stewarde. ³ The stewarde sayde within hym selfe, what shall I do? for my mayster wyll take away from me the stewardshyppe. I can not dygge, and to begge, I am ashamed. ⁴ I wote what to do, that when I am put oute of stewardshyppe, they maye receyue me into theyr houses. ⁵ Then called he all hys maysters detters, & sayed vnto the first, how much owest thou vnto my mayster? ⁶ And he sayed: an hundred tonnes of oyle. And he sayed to hym: take thy bil and sit doune quicklye, and wryte fyftye. ⁷ Then sayed he to another: what owest thou? And he sayed: an hundred quarters of wheate. He said to hym: Take thy byll, and write foure scoore. ⁸ And the Lord commended the vniust steward because he had done wyslye. For the chyldren of thys worlde are in theyr kynde, wyser then the chyldren of lyght, ⁹ And I saye also vnto you: make you frendes, of the wycked mammon, that when ye shall depart, they maye receyue you into euerlastynge habitacyons. ¹⁰ He that is faythfull in that whiche is least, the same is faythfull in muche. And he that is vnfaythfull in the least, is vnfaythfull also in muche. ¹¹ So then yf ye haue not ben faythfull in the wycked Mammon: who wyll beleue you in that which is true? ¹² And yf ye haue not bene faythfull in another mannes busynes, who shall geue you your owne? ¹³ No seruaunte can serue two maysters, for other he shal hate the one and loue the other, or els he shall leane to the one, and despyse the other. Ye can not serue God and Mammon. ¹⁴ All these thynges hearde the phariseis also which were couetous, and they mocked hym. ¹⁵ And he sayde vnto them: Ye are they whiche iustifye your selues before men: but God knoweth your hertes. For that which is highly estemed amonge men, is abhominable in the syght of God. ¹⁶ The lawe and the Prophetes raygned vntyll the tyme of Iohn: and sence that tyme the kyngdom of God is preached, and euery man stryueth to go in. ¹⁷ Soner shall heauen & earthe peryshe, then one title of the lawe shal perish. ¹⁸ Whosoeuer forsaketh his wyfe and maryeth another, breaketh matrimony. And euery man which maryeth her that is deforsed from her husbande comitteth aduoutrye also. ¹⁹ There was a certayne ryche man, whiche was clothed in purple and fyne bysse, & fared delyciously euery daye, ²⁰ And there was a certayne begger named Lazarus, whiche laye at hys gate full of sores, ²¹ desierynge to be refresshed with the cromes which fell from the riche mans bourde. Neuerthelesse the dogges came and lycked hys sores. ²² And it fortuned that the begger dyed, and was caryed by the Angels into Abrahams bosome. The ryche man also dyed and was buryed. ²³ And beynge in hell in tormentes, he lyfte vp hys eyes, and sawe Abraham a farre of, & Lazarus in his bosome, ²⁴ and he cryed & sayed: father Abraham haue mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he maye dyppe the typpe of his fynger in water, and cole my tonge, for I am tormented in this flamme. ²⁵ But Abraham sayd vnto hym. Sonne, remembre that thou in thy lyfe tyme, receyuedest thy pleasure, and contrarywyse Lazarus payne. Nowe therfore is he conforted, and thou arte punyshed. ²⁶ Beyonde all thys, betwene you and vs there is a great space set, so that they whiche would go from hence to you can not, neyther maye come from thence to vs. ²⁷ Then he sayed: I praye the therfore father, sende hym to my fathers house. ²⁸ For I haue fyue brethren, for to warne them lest they also come into thys place of tormente. ²⁹ Abraham said vnto hym: they haue Moyses and the Prophetes: let them heare them. ³⁰ And he sayd: nay father Abraham, but yf one came vnto them from the dead, they woulde repent. ³¹ He sayed vnto hym: yf they heare not Moyses, and the Prophetes, neyther wyll they beleue, though one rose from death agayne.

¹⁵ And it came to passe, when he was come agayne, and had receyued hys kyngdome, he commaunded these seruauntes, to be called to him (to whom he gaue hys money) to wyt what euery man had done. ¹⁶ Then came the fyrste saiynge: Lorde, thy pounde hath encreased ten pounde. ¹⁷ And he sayde vnto hym. Well good seruaunte, because thou waste faythful in a very lytell thynge, take thou authoritye ouer ten cities. ¹⁸ And the other came, saying: Lorde thy pounde hath encreased fyue pound. ¹⁹ And to the same he sayde, and be thou also ruler ouer .v. cities.

²⁸ Take hede therfore vnto youre selues, and to all the flocke wherof the holy ghoste hath made you ouersears, to rule the congregacyon of God, which he hath purchased wt hys bloude.

¹ Let men thus wyse esteme vs, euen as the ministers of Christ, and disposers of the secretes of of God. ² Furthermore it is requyred of the dysposers, that they be found faithfull.

¹⁵ but and yf I tarye longe, that then thou mayeste yet haue knowledge howe thou oughtest to behaue thy selfe in the housse of God, whiche is the congregacyon of the lyuynge God, the pyllar & ground of trueth.

¹⁷ The elders that rule well, are worthye of double honoure, most specyally they whiche laboure in the worde and in teachynge.

² preache the word, be feruent, be it in season or out of season. Improue, rebuke, exhorte, wyth all long suffering and doctryne.

⁷ For a byshoppe must be fautelesse, as it becommeth the mynister of God: not stubborne, not angrye, no dronkarde, no fyghter, not geuen to fylthy lucre:

⁵ And Moyses verelye was faythfull in al hys house as a minyster, to beare wytnes of those thynges, whyche shoulde be spoken afterwarde.

⁷ Remembre them whiche haue the ouersyght of you, whiche haue declared vnto you the worde of God. The ende of whose conuersacyon se that ye loke vpon, and folowe theyr faythe.

¹⁷ Obeye them that haue the ouersyghte of you, and submyt your selues to them, for they watche for youre soules, euen as they that muste geue accomptes: that they maye do it wyth ioye, and not wyth griefe. For that is an vnprofytable thynge for you.

¹⁰ As euerye man hath receyued the gifte, minister the same one to another as good mynisters of the manifolde grace of God.

² Many of them that slepe in the dust of the earth, shal awake: some to euerlastinge lyfe, some to perpetual shame and reprofe. ³ The wyse (suche as haue taught other) shall glyster, as the shynninge of heauen: and those that haue instructe the multitude vnto godlynesse, shall be as the starres, worlde without ende.

⁴⁷ Verelye I saye vnto you, he shall make hym ruler ouer all hys goodes.

²⁹ And I appointe vnto you a kyngdome, as my father hath appointed to me, ³⁰ that ye maye eate and drinke at my table in my kingdome, and syt on seates, and iudge the twelue tribes of Israel.

¹⁸ I counsel the to bye of me golde tryed in the fyre, that thou mayest be ryche, and whyte raymente, that thou mayest be clothed, that thy fylthye nakednes do not appere, & annointe thine eyes wyth eye salue, that thou maiest se.

¹⁰ For hys watch men are al blind, they haue altogether no vnderstandyng, they are al domme dogges, not beyng able to barcke, they are slepery: slogish are they, & lye snortynge: ¹¹ they are shamelesse dogges, that be neuer satisfyed. The sheperdes also in lyke maner haue no vnderstanding but euery man turneth his owne way, euery one after his owne couetousnes with all hys power. ¹² Come (saye they) I wil fetche wyne, so shall we fyll oure selues, that we maye be droncken. And to morowe, lyke as to daye, yea and much more.

⁶ Beholde it is written before my face and shal not be forgotten, but recompenced. I shall rewarde it them in their bosome.

² he smote Ieremye, & put hym in the stockes, that are by the hye gate of BenIamim, in the house of the Lorde.

²² Thou sonne of man, what maner of byworde is that, whiche ye vse in the lande of Israel, sayinge: Thus, seynge that the dayes are so slacke in commynge, all the visyons are of none effecte:

²⁷ Beholde, thou sonne of man: The house of Israel saye in this maner: Tushe, as for the vysion that he hath sene, it wil be many a day or it come to passe: Is it farre of it, the thyng that he prophecyeth. ²⁸ Therfore say vnto them: Thus sayth the Lorde GOD: All my wordes shall no more be slacke: Loke what I speake, that same shall come to passe, sayeth the Lorde.

³ Ye haue eaten vp the fatte, ye haue clothed you wyth the wol: the best fedde haue ye slayne, but the flocke haue ye not noryshed. ⁴ The weake haue ye not holden vp, the sicke haue ye not healed: the broken haue ye not bounde together, the oute castes haue ye not brought agayne: the lost haue ye not soughte, but churlishly and cruellye haue ye ruled them.

⁸ Thus sayth the Lorde God: As trulye as I lyue, for so much as my shepe are robbed, & deuoured of all the wylde beastes of the felde, hauynge no shepherde: and seinge that my shepeherdes take no regarde of my shepe, but fede them selues onely, and not my shepe:

⁶ the remnaunt toke hys seruauntes and intreated them vngodly and slewe them.

⁴⁸ But and if that euyll seruaunt shall saye in his herte, my maister wyll defer hys commynge, ⁴⁹ and begynne to smyte his felowes, yea, and to eate and to drinke with the dronken: ⁵⁰ that seruauntes maister wyll come in a daye when he loketh not for him, and in an houre that he is not ware of,

¹⁸ For they that are such, serue not the Lorde Iesus Christ: but theyr owne bellyes, and with swete preachynges & flatterynge wordes deceyue the hertes of the innocentes.

²⁰ For ye suffre euen yf a man brynge you into bondage: yf a man deuoure, yf a man take yf a man exalte hym selfe, yf a man smite you on the face.

¹⁸ For many walke (of whom I haue tolde you often, and nowe tel you weping) that they are the enemies of the crosse of Christ, ¹⁹ whose ende is dampnation, whose God is theyr belye, and whose glorye is to theyr shame, whiche are worldlye minded.

⁷ For they that slepe, slepe in the nyght: and they that be droncken, are droncken in the nyght.

³ and thorowe couetousnes shal they wyth fayned wordes make marchaundyse of you, whose iudgement is not farre of, and theyr dampnacion slepeth not. ⁴ For yf God spared not the aungels that sinned but cast them downe into hell, and deliuered them into chayns of darckenes, to be kept vnto iudgement,

¹³ and receiue the reward of vnrightuousnes. They count it pleasure to lyue deliciously for a season. Spottes they are and filthines, liuinge at pleasure, and in disceiueable waies feastinge with you,

¹⁹ They promis them libertie, and are them selues the bonde seruauntes of corrupcyon. For of whomsoeuer a man is ouer come, vnto the same is he in bondage.

⁹ I wrote vnto the congregacion, but Diotrephes, which loueth to haue the preeminence amonge them, receiueth vs not. ¹⁰ Wherfore yf I come, I wyl declare his dedes, whiche he doth, resting on vs wyth malicious wordes, neyther is there wyth contente. Not onlye he hym selfe receyueth not the brethren, but also he forbyddeth them that woulde, and thrusteth them out of the congregacyon.

¹² These are spottes which of youre kyndnes feast together, wythoute feare, fedyng themselues. Cloudes they are wythout water, caryed aboute of wyndes, and trees wythout frute at gatherynge tyme, twyse dead & plucked vp by rotes. ¹³ They are the ragynge waues of the sea, fomyng out theyr owne shame. They are wandryng starres to whome is reserued the myste of darcknes for euer.

⁷ And it was geuen vnto hym to make warre wyth the Saynctes, and to ouercome them. And power was geuen hym ouer al kynredes, tonges and nacions, ⁸ and al that dwel vpon the earth worshipte him, whose names are not written in the boke of lyfe of the lambe, which was killed from the beginning of the worlde. ⁹ Yf any man haue an eare, let hym heare. ¹⁰ He that leadeth into captiuitie shal go into captiuitie, he that kylleth wt a sweard, must be kylled wyth a sweard. Here is the pacience and the fayth of the sainctes.

¹⁵ And he had power to geue a spyryte vnto the ymage of the beaste, and that the ymage of the beast should speake, and shoulde cause that as manye as would not worshyppe the ymage of the beaste, shoulde be kylled. ¹⁶ And he made al both smale and greate, ryche and poore, free and bonde, to receyue a marke in theyr ryght handes, or in theyr forheades. ¹⁷ And that no man myghte by or sell, saue he that had the marke, or the name of the beaste, other the numbre of his name.

⁶ for they shed out the bloud of sainctes, & prophetes, & therfore hast thou geuen them bloud to drinke, for they are worthy.

⁵ And in her forhead was a name wrytten, a mystery, great Babylon the mother of whoredome and abominacions of the earth. ⁶ And I saw the wyfe drounken with the bloude of Saynctes, and with the bloud of the wytnesses of Iesu. And when I saw her, I wondred wyth great maruayle.

⁷ And as muche as she glorified her selfe and lyued wantonly, so muche poure ye in for her of punishment, & sorowe, for she said in her herte: I sytte being a quene and am no wydowe, and shall se no sorowe. ⁸ Therfore shal her plages come at one daye, death, and sorowe, and honger, and she shalbe brente wyth fyre, for stronge is the Lorde God, whiche iudgeth her.

²⁴ & in her was found the bloud of the prophetes, and of the sainctes and of al that were slayne vpon the earth.

²⁹ This is the porcyon that the wycked shall haue of God, and the heretage that he may loke for of the Lorde.

⁵ The Lorde seith bothe the righteous and vngodly, but who so delyteth in wickednes, hym hys soule abhorreth.

⁹ For wycked doers shalbe roted oute, but they that paciently abyde the Lord, shall enheret the lande.

¹⁴ For the Lorde will not fayle his people, neither will he forsake his inheritaunce.

²² Many will saye to me in that daye: Maister, maister, haue we not in thy name prophesied? And in thy name haue cast out deuylles? And in thy name haue done many miracles? ²³ And then will I knowledge vnto them, that I neuer knewe them. Departe from me, ye workers of iniquitie.

⁴¹ The sonne of man shall sende forth hys Aungels, and they shall gather out of hys kyngedom all thynges that offende, and them whych do iniquity, ⁴² and shall caste theim into a fournayce of fyre. There shalbe waylyng & gnasshyng of teth.

⁴⁹ So shall it be at the ende of the worlde. The aungels shall come out, and seuer the bad from the good, ⁵⁰ and shall caste them into a furnayce of the fyre: there shalbe waylyng and gnashyng of teth.

⁵¹ and wyll deuide hym, and geue him his rewarde with hipocrites. There shalbe weping and gnashing of tethe.

¹⁹ and I wyll saye to my soule: Soule thou hast muche goodes layde vp in store for many yeares: take thyne ease, eate, drinke, and be mery. ²⁰ But God sayed vnto hym: Thou fole, thys nyghte wyll they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall these thinges be which thou haste prouyded?

⁴⁰ Be ye prepared therfore: for the sonne of man will come at an houre, when ye thynke not.

³⁰ And the soule that doeth ought presumptously, whether he be an Israelite or a straunger, the same hath despised the Lorde. And that soule shal be destroied from among his people ³¹ bycause he hathe despised the worde of the Lorde and hath broken his commaundementes, that soule therfore shal peryshe & his synne shalbe vpon him.

² And yf the trespaser be worthy of stripes, then let the iudge cause to take him doune and to beate hym before his face accordynge to his trespace vnto a certayne nombr ³ .xl. strypes he shall geue him & and not passe: lest yf he should exceade & beate him aboue that with many stripes, thi brother should appeare vngoodly before thyne eyes.

²² Neuerthelesse I saye to you: it shall be easier for Tyre and Sydon at the daye of iudgement, then for you. ²³ And thou Capernaum, which art lyft vp vnto heauen, shall be brought doune to hell. For if the miracles which haue bene done in the, had be shewed in Zodome: they had remayned to this daye. ²⁴ Neuerthelesse I saye vnto you: it shall be easyer for the lande of Zodom in the daye of iudgement, then for the.

¹² Yea, and I saye to you, that it shalbe easier in that daye for Zodome then for that citie. ¹³ Wo be to the Chorazim, wo be to the Bethsaida. For yf the myracles had bene done in Tyre and Sidon, whiche haue bene done in you, they had a great whyle a gone repented, sittynge in hayre and ashes. ¹⁴ Neuerthelesse, it shalbe easyer for Tyre and Sidon at the iudgement, then for you. ¹⁵ And thou Capernaum, which arte exalted to heauen, shalt be thruste doune to hell.

⁴¹ Iesus sayde vnto them: yf ye were blynde, ye shoulde haue no synne. But nowe ye saye: we se, therfor your synne remayneth.

⁴⁸ He that refuseth me, and receiueth not my wordes, hath one that iudgeth hym. The wordes that I haue spoken, they shall iudge hym in the laste day.

²² Yf I had not come, and spoken vnto them, they should not haue had synne: but now haue they nothynge to cloke theyr synne with all. ²³ He that hateth me, hateth my father. ²⁴ If I had not done workes among them which none other man dyd, they had not had synne. But now haue they sene, & yet haue hated both me & my father:

¹¹ Iesus aunswered: Than couldest haue no power at all agaynst me, except it were geuen the from aboue. Therfore he that delyuered me vnto the, is more in synne.

³⁰ And the tyme of thys ignoraunce God regarded not. But now he byddeth all men euerye where repent,

¹⁵ For we are vnto God the swete sauoure of Christe, bothe amonge them that are saued, and also among them whiche peryshe. ¹⁶ To the one part are we the sauoure of death vnto death. And vnto the other parte are we the lauoure of lyfe vnto lyfe. And who is mete vnto these thynges?

¹⁷ Therfor to hym that knoweth how to do good, and doeth it not to him it is sinne.

⁸ But he denyed & sayde to her: Beholde, my master woteth not what he hath in the house wt me, but hath commytted all that he hath to my hande. ⁹ He him selfe is not greater in the house than I, and hath kepte nothyng from me, but only the because thou art hys wyfe. How than can I do thys great wykydnes, for to synne agaynst God? ¹⁰ And after thys maner spake she to Ioseph daye by day: but he harkend not vnto her, to slepe nere her, or to be in her company. ¹¹ And it fortuned aboute the same season, that Ioseph entred in to the house, to do hys busynes: & there was none of the housholde by, in the house. ¹² And she caught hym by the garment saying: come slepe wyth me. And he left his garment in her hande & fled and got him out. ¹³ When she sawe that he had left hys garment in her hande, and was fled out, ¹⁴ she called vnto the men of the house, & tolde them sayinge: Se, he hath brought in an Hebrewe vnto vs to do vs shame: for he came in to me, for to haue slept wyth me. But I cryed with a loude voyce. ¹⁵ And when he harde, that I lyfte vp my voyce & cryed, he left hys garment wt me & fled away and got him out. ¹⁶ And she layed vp his garment by her, vntil her Lord came home. ¹⁷ And she told him accordyng to these wordes saying. This Hebrues seruaunte whiche thou hast brought vnto vs came in to me to do me shame. ¹⁸ But as soone as I lyft vp my voyce and cryed, he left hys garment with me & fled out. ¹⁹ When his master herde the woordes of his wyfe which she told hym sayinge: after thys maner dyd thy seruaunte to me, he waxed wrooth. ²⁰ And he toke Ioseph & put him in preson: euen in the place where the kinges prisoners laye bounde. And there continued he in preson, ²¹ but the Lorde was wyth Ioseph & shewed hym mercye, & got him fauoure in the syghte of the keper of the preso ²² which commytted to Iosephs hande all the presoners that were in the preson house. And what soeuer was done there, that dyd he. ²³ And the keper of the preson loked vnto nothynge that was vnder hys hande, because the Lorde was wyth hym, and because that what soeuer he dyd, the Lorde made it come luckely to passe.

¹⁷ When a soule synneth & committeth any of these thynges whyche are forbidden to be done by the commaundement of the Lorde: though he wyst it not, he hath yet offended & is in synne,

²⁹ And both thou that art borne one of the chyldren of Israel & the straunger that dwelleth among you shal haue both one law, if ye synne thorow ignorancy. ³⁰ And the soule that doeth ought presumptously, whether he be an Israelite or a straunger, the same hath despised the Lorde. And that soule shal be destroied from among his people

¹² For whosoeuer hath to hym shalbe geuen, and he shall haue aboundaunce. But whosoeuer hath not: from hym shalbe taken awaye euen that he hath.

¹⁴ Lykewyse as a certayne man, redye to take iorney to a straunge countre, called hys seruauntes and delyuered to them his goodes. ¹⁵ And vnto one he gaue fyue talentes, to another .ij. and to another one: to euery man after his abylite, and straight waye departed. ¹⁶ Then he that had receyued the .v. talentes, went and bestowed them and wan other fyue talentes. ¹⁷ Likewise he that receiued two, gained other two. ¹⁸ But he that receiued the one, wente and digged a pit in the earth and hid his maisters money. ¹⁹ After a longe season the Lorde of those seruauntes came and rekened with them. ²⁰ Then came he that had receyued .v. talentes, and brought other .v. talentes, sayinge: maister thou delyuerest vnto me fyue talentes beholde I haue gained with them fyue talentes mo. ²¹ Then his maister sayde vnto him: Well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faythfull in litle, I wyll make the rueler ouer muche enter in into thy maisters ioye. ²² Also he that receiued .ij. talentes, came and sayed mayster thou deliuerest vnto me twoo talentes, beholde I haue won two other talentes with them. ²³ And his maister sayde vnto hym, well good seruaunt and faithfull. Thou hast bene faithfull in litle, I wyll make the ruler ouer much: go in into thy maisters ioye. ²⁴ Then he which had receiued the one talent, came & sayde, maister, I consydered that thou waste an harde man, which repest were thou sowest not, & gadderest where thou strawest not, ²⁵ and was therfore afraide, and went and hid thy talente in the earth: beholde, thou hast thyne owne. ²⁶ His maister aunswered and said vnto hym: thou euyll seruaunte and slouthful, thou knewest that I repe wher I sowed not, and gadder wher I strawed not: ²⁷ thou oughtest therfore to haue had my money to the chaungers, then at my commynge shoulde I haue receyued myne owne with vauntage. ²⁸ Take therfore the talent from him, and giue it vnto him which hath ten talentes. ²⁹ For vnto euerye man that hathe shalbe geuen, and he shall haue aboundaunce, and from hym that hath not, shall be taken awaye, euen that he hath.

² And he called hym, and sayde vnto hym: Howe is it, that I heare thys of the? Geue a comptes of thy stewardshyppe. For thou mayest be no longer stewarde.

¹⁰ He that is faythfull in that whiche is least, the same is faythfull in muche. And he that is vnfaythfull in the least, is vnfaythfull also in muche. ¹¹ So then yf ye haue not ben faythfull in the wycked Mammon: who wyll beleue you in that which is true? ¹² And yf ye haue not bene faythfull in another mannes busynes, who shall geue you your owne?

²² Yf I had not come, and spoken vnto them, they should not haue had synne: but now haue they nothynge to cloke theyr synne with all.

¹² shall perishe wythout lawe. And as many as haue synned vnder the lawe, shalbe iudged by the law. ¹³ For before God they are not ryghtuous whiche heare the lawe: but the doers of the lawe shalbe iustifyed. ¹⁴ For yf the Gentyls whiche haue no lawe do of nature the thinges contayned in the lawe: then they hauynge no lawe, are a law vnto them selues, ¹⁵ which shew the dedes of the lawe wrytten in theyr hertes: whyle theyr conscience beareth witnes vnto them, and also theyr thoughtes, accusyng one another, or excusynge ¹⁶ at the daye when God shall iudge the secretes of men by Iesus Christ accordynge to my Gospell.

¹⁷ Yf I do it wyth a good wil, I haue a rewarde. But yf I do it against my wyl, an offyce is committed vnto me. ¹⁸ What is my reward then? Verelye, that when I preache the Gospell, I make the Gospell of Christ fre, that I misuse not myne authoryte in the Gospell.

¹¹ accordynge to the Gospell of the glorye of the blessed God, whiche Gospell is committed vnto me.

²⁰ O Timothe saue that whiche is geuen the to kepe, and auoyde vnghostlye vanytyes of voyces and opposicyons of science falslye so called,

³ but hath opened hys worde, at the tyme appoynted thorowe preachynge which preachynge is commytted vnto me by the commaundement of God oure sauyoure.

¹ My brethren be not euery man a mayster, remembrynge howe that we shal receyue the more damnacyon:

⁴ but wyth ryghteousnesse shall he iudge the poore, and with holynes shal he refourme the symple of the worlde. He shall smyte the worlde wyth the staffe of hys mouthe, & with the breathe of his mouth shall he slay the wicked.

³⁰ I wyll shewe wonders in heauen aboue, and tokens in the earth beneth: bloude and fyre, and the vapour of smoke. ³¹ The sunne shalbe turned into darcknes, & the mone into bloude: before the greate & notable daye of the Lorde come.

² But who may abyde the day of hys commyng? Who shalbe able to endure, when he appeareth? For he is lyke a goldsmythes fire and lyke a wasshers sope. ³ He shall syt hym doune to trye and to clense the syluer, he shall pourge the children of Leui, & puryfye them lyke as golde and syluer: that they may bring meatofferinges vnto the Lorde in righteousnes.

¹ For marck, the day commeth, that shall burne as an ouen: and al the proude, yea and al such as do wickednesse, shalbe straw: and the daye that is for to come, shall burne them vp (sayeth the Lorde of hostes) so that it shall leaue them neyther rote nor braunche.

¹⁰ Euen now is the axe put vnto the rote of the trees: so that euerye tre which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewen doun & cast into the fire. ¹¹ I baptise you in water in token of repentaunce, but he that cometh after me is mightyer then I, whose shues I am not worthy to beare. He shal baptise you with the holy ghost and with fyre: ¹² which hath also his fan in hys hande, and will purge his floure gather the wheat into his garner, & wyl burne the chaffe with vnquenciable fyre.

⁵³ When he thus spake vnto them, the lawyers, and the Pharyses began to wexe busye aboute hym, and to stop hys mouthe with manye questyons, ⁵⁴ layinge wayte for hym, and sekynge to catche some thynge of hys mouthe, whereby they myghte accuse hym.

⁵¹ Suppose ye that I am come to sende peace on earth? I tell you naye, but rather debate. ⁵² For from henceforth there shalbe fyue in one house deuyded, thre againste two, and two agaynst thre.

³¹ The same daye there came certayne of the Pharises and sayde to him: Get the out of the waye, and departe hence: For Herode wyl kil the. ³² And he sayed vnto them, Go ye and tell that foxe, beholde I caste oute deuyls, & heale the people to day and to morowe, and the third daye I make an ende. ³³ Neuertheles, I must walke to daye and to morowe and the daye folowynge. For it can not be, that a prophet perysh any other wher, saue at Hierusalem

³⁹ And some of the Phariseis of the companye sayde vnto him: Mayster rebuke thy disciples. ⁴⁰ He aunswered and sayed vnto them: I tell you, yf these shoulde holde theyr peace, the stones woulde crye.

⁴ I must work the workes of hym that sente me, whyle it is daye. The nyghte cometh, when no man can worke.

⁸ His discyples sayde vnto hym: Mayster, the Iewes latelye sought meanes to stone the, and wylt thou go thyther agayne? ⁹ Iesus aunswered: are there not .xij. houres in the daye of a man walke in the daye, he stombleth not, because he seeth the lyght of thys world. ¹⁰ But yf a man walke in the nyght, he stombleth, because there is no lyght in him.

¹⁷ The people that was with hym, when he called Lazarus out of hys graue, and raysed hym from death, bare recorde. ¹⁸ Therfore met hym the people, because they hearde that he had done suche a myracle. ¹⁹ The Phariseis therfore sayed amonge them selues: perceyue ye howe we preuayle nothing? beholde the worlde goeth awaye after hym.

⁸ that I shoulde fulfyl thy wyl O my God, and that am I content to do: yea thy lawe is wythin my hert.

¹⁷ And Iesus ascended to Ierusalem and toke the .xij. disciples a parte in the way, and sayde to them: ¹⁸ Beholde we go vp to Ierusalem, and the sonne of man shalbe betrayed vnto the chief priestes and vnto the scribes: and they shal condemne hym to death, ¹⁹ and shall deliuer hym to the gentels, to be mocked, to be scourged, & to be crucified, and the thirde daye he shall rise agayne. ²⁰ Then came to him the mother of Zebedes chyldren with her sonnes, worshippyng hym and desiring a certayn thinge of hym. ²¹ And he saide vnto her: what wilt thou haue? She said vnto hym: Graunt that these my two sonnes maye sitte, the one on thy right hande, and the other on the lift hande in thy kyngdome ²² Iesus aunswered and sayde: Ye wotte not what ye are. Are ye able to drinke of the cup that I shall drynke of: and to be baptised with the baptisme that I shalbe baptised wt?

³² And they were in the waye goynge vnto Hierusalem. And Iesus wente before them: and they were amased, and as they folowed, they were afrayed. And Iesus toke the twelue agayne, and began to tell them what thynges shoulde happen vnto hym. ³³ Beholde, we go vp to Hierusalem and the sonne of man shalbe delyuered into the handes of the hye priestes, and vnto the Scribes: and they shall condempne hym to death, and shall delyuer hym to the gentyls: ³⁴ and they shal mocke him, & schourge him and spyte vpon hym, and kyl hym. And the thyrd daye he shall ryse agayne. ³⁵ And then Iames & Iohn the sons of zebede came vnto hym, sayinge: Mayster, we would that thou shouldest do for vs whatsoeuer we desyre. ³⁶ He sayed vnto them: what woulde ye I shoulde do vnto you? ³⁷ They sayed to hym: graunte vnto vs that we may sitte one on thy ryght hande, and the other on thy lifte hande, in thy glory. ³⁸ But Iesus sayed vnto them: Ye wote not what ye axe. Can ye drinke of the cuppe that I shall drinke of, and be baptysed in the baptime that I shalbe baptised in?

³⁴ Iesus saied to them: my meate is to do the wil of him that sent me. And to fynishe his workes.

⁶ Then Iesus sayde vnto them: My tyme is not yet come, your tyme is alway redye. ⁷ The worlde can not hate you. But me it hateth: because I testifye of it, that the workes of it are euyll. ⁸ Go ye vp vnto this feaste, I wyl not go yet vnto this feaste for my tyme is not yet full come.

¹⁰ But assone as his brethren were gone vp, he wente also vp vnto the feast: not openly, but as it were priuelye.

³⁹ Agayne they went about to take hym: but he escaped out of theyr handes, ⁴⁰ and went awaye agayne beyonde Iordan, into the place where Iohn before had baptysed, and there abode. ⁴¹ And manye resorted vnto hym, & sayed: Iohn dyd no myracle, but all thynges that Iohn spake of thys man, are true.

²⁷ Nowe is my soule troubled, and what shal I saye? Father delyuer me from thys houre: but therfore came I vnto thys houre. ²⁸ Father, glorifye thy name. Then came there a voyce from heauen: I haue glorifyed it, and wil glorifye it agayne.

¹¹ Then sayed Iesus vnto Peter: put vp thy swerde into the sheath: shall I not drinke of the cup whiche my father hathe geuen me?

³⁰ Assone as Iesus had receyued of the vyneger he sayed: It is finyshed: and bowed hys head, and gaue vp the ghoste.

²² And now beholde I go bounde in the spyryte vnto Ierusalem, and knowe not what shal come on me there,

⁷ I my self fedde the slaughter shepe (a pore flocke verely) & toke vnto me two staues: the one I called louinge mekenesse, the other I called wo, & so I kepte the shepe. ⁸ Thre sheperdes destroyeth I in one moneth, for I might not away wt them, neither had they any delyte in me.

¹⁰ I toke also my louing meke staf, & brake it, that I might disanul the couenaunt, which I made with al people. ¹¹ And so it was broken in that daye. Then the poore simple shepe that had a respecte vnto me, knewe therby, that it was the word of the lord.

¹⁴ Then brake I my other staf also (namely wo) that I mighte lowse the brotherhead betwixte Iuda and Israel.

³⁴ Thinke not that I am come to sende peace into the earth. I came not to sende peace but a swerd. ³⁵ For I am come to set a man at variaunce agaynst hys father, and the doughter against her mother, and the doughterlaw against her motherlaw: ³⁶ And a mans fooes shall be they of hys owne housholde.

⁷ For nacion shall ryse against nacion and realme against realme: and ther shalbe pestylence, honger and earth quakes in certayne places? ⁸ All these are the begynnynge of sorowes. ⁹ Then shall they put you to trouble, and shall kyll you: and ye shalbe hated of all nacions for my names sake. ¹⁰ And then shall manye be offended, and shal betray one another, and shall hate one the other.

⁴⁹ I am come to sende fyre on earth, & what is my desyre but that it were all ready kyndled?

⁹ Yea euen myne owne famylyer frende, whom I trusted, whiche dyd eate my breade hath lyfte vp his hele agaynste me.

⁵ Let no man beleue hys frende, nor put his confidence in a prynce. Kepe the porte of thy mouthe, from her that lyeth in thy bosome: ⁶ for the sonne shall put hys father to dyshonoure, the doughter shall ryse agaynst her mother, the doughter in lawe agaynst her mother in lawe: & a mans foes shalbe euen they of hys owne houshold.

⁴¹ other sayeth: this is Christe, some saide: shal Christ come out of Galile? ⁴² Saieth not the scriptuture that Christ shal come of the sede of Dauid, & out of the toune of Bethleem wher Dauid was? ⁴³ So was there dissencydu among the people aboute hym?

¹⁶ Then sayd some of the Phariseis: thys man is not of God, because he kepeth not the Saboth daye. Other sayed: howe can a man that is a synner, do such miracles? And there was stryfe among them.

¹⁹ And there was a dissencyon agayne among the Iewes for these saiynges, ²⁰ & many of them sayd: he hath the deuil, and is madde: why heare ye hym? ²¹ Other sayd: these are not the wordes of hym that hath the deuyll. Can the deuyll open the eyes of the blynde?

¹⁸ Yf the worlde hate you, ye knowe that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ Yf ye were of the worlde, the worlde woulde loue his owne. Howe be it because ye are not of the worlde, but I haue chosen you out of the worlde, therfore hateth you the worlde. ²⁰ Remember the saiyng that I sayde vnto you: the seruaunt is not greater then the lorde, yf they haue persecuted me, so wyll they persecute you: yf they haue kept my saiynges, so wyll they kepe yours. ²¹ But all these thinges wyll they do vnto you, for my names sake, because they haue not knowen him that sent me.

² They shall excommunicate you: ye the tyme shall come, that whosoeuer kylleth you, wil thinke that he doeth god seruice.

⁴³ When the congregacyon was broken vp, many of the Iewes & vertuouse conuertes, folowed Paule and Barnabas, which spake to them, and exhorted them to continue in the grace of God. ⁴⁴ And the next Saboth day came almost the whole citie together, to heare the worde of God. ⁴⁵ When the Iewes saw the people, they were ful of indignacyon & spake agaynste those thynges, whiche were spoken of Paule, speakynge agaynst it, and railynge on it. ⁴⁶ Then Paule and Barnabas wexed bolde, and sayed: it was mete that the worde of God shoulde fyrste haue ben preached to you. But seynge, ye put it from you, and thynke youre selues vnworthy of euerlastyng lyfe: lo, we turne to the gentyls:

¹ And it fortuned in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagoge of the Iewes, and so spake that a greate multitude bothe of the Iewes, and also of the grekes beleued. ² But the vnbeleuynge Iewes stered vp, and vnquieted the myndes of the gentyls agaynst the brethren. ³ Long tyme abode they there, and quyt them selues boldely with the helpe of the Lorde, which gaue testimonye vnto the worde of hys grace, & caused signes and wondres to be done by theyr handes. ⁴ The people of the citie were deuyded: and parte helde with the Iewes, and parte wt the Apostles.

²⁴ And some beleued the thinges, whyche were spoken, and some beleued not.

⁶ for the sonne shall put hys father to dyshonoure, the doughter shall ryse agaynst her mother, the doughter in lawe agaynst her mother in lawe: & a mans foes shalbe euen they of hys owne houshold.

² And then (saieth the lord of hostes) I will destroye the names of Idols out of the land: so that they shal nomore be put in remembraunce. As for the false prophetes also & the vnclene spirit, I shal take them out of the land: ³ so that yf any of them prophecy any more, hys owne father and mother that begat him, shal saye vnto him: Thou shalt dye, for thou speakest lyes vnder the name of the Lord: yea his owne father and mother that begat him, shal wound him, when he prophecieth. ⁴ And then shal those prophetes be confounded, euery one of his vision when he prophecieth: neither shall they weer sackclothes any more, to disceyue men wt all. ⁵ But he shalbe fayne to saye: I am no prophete: I am an husband man, for so am I taught by Adam from my youth vp: ⁶ & yf it be sayd vnto him: how came these woundes then in thine handes? He shal answere: Thus am I wounded in the house of myne owne frendes.

²¹ The brother shall betraye the brother to death, and the father the sonne. And the children shall aryse againste their fathers & mothers, and shall put them to death: ²² and ye shal be hated of all men for my name. But he that endureth to the ende shalbe saued.

¹⁰ And then shall manye be offended, and shal betray one another, and shall hate one the other.

⁴⁴ And the seuenth time he sayde: beholde, there aryseth a lytle cloude out of the sea, lyke the palme of a mannes hande. Then he sayde: go and saye to Ahab, put the horsses in the charet, and get the doune that the rayne stoppe the not. ⁴⁵ And within a lytle whyle, heauen was blacke wyth cloudes and winde, and there was a great rayne. And Ahab rode and went to Iezrahel.

² He aunswered and saide vnto them. At euen ye saye, we shall haue fayre wedder, and that because the skye is reed: ³ and in the mornynge ye saye: to daye shalbe foule wedder, & that because the skie is cloudy and redde. O ye hypocrites ye can discerne the fashion of the skie and can ye not discerne the signes of the times ⁴ The froward nacion and aduouterous seketh a signe: and there shal no nother signe be geuen vnto them, but the signe of the prophet Ionas So lefte he them, and departed.

¹⁷ and howe thy clothes are warme, when the lande is styll thorowe the Southe wynd

¹² saying: These laste haue wrought but one houre, and thou haste made theym equall vnto vs whiche haue borne the burthen, and heat of the daye.

³² And of the chyldren of Isacar, whyche were men that had vnderstandynge in the ryght tyme to knowe what Israel ought to do: The heedes of them were two hundred, and all theyr brethren at theyr wyll.

²⁴ .Lxx. weakes are determed ouer thy people, and ouer the holy citie: that the wickednesse maye be consumed, that the sinne maye haue an ende, that the offence may be reconcyled, and to bringe in euerlastinge righteousnesse, to fulfill the visions and the Prophetes, and to annoynte the most holy one. ²⁵ Vnderstande this then, and marcke it well, that from the tyme it shalbe concluded, to go and repayre Ierusalem againe, vnto Christ (or the annointed) prince: there shalbe seuen weakes. Then shal the stretes and walles be buylded again .lxij. weakes, but wyth harde troublous time. ²⁶ After these .lxii. weakes shall Christ be slaine and they shall haue no pleasure in hym. Then shall there come a people with the Prince, and destroye the cytie and the Sanctuarye: & his ende shall come as the water floude. But the desolacion shall continue till the ende of the battell.

⁷ yea, I will moue al heathen, & the comforte of all Heathen shall come, and so wyll I fyl thys house wyth honoure, sayeth the Lorde of hostes.

¹ Beholde, I wil sende my messaunger, which shall prepare the way before me: & the Lord whome, ye woulde haue, shall sone come to hys temple, yea, euen the messenger of the couenaunt, whome ye longe for. Beholde he commeth, sayeth the Lord of hostes

² But vnto you that feare my name, shall the Sonne of ryghteousnesse aryse, and healthe shalbe vnder his winges: ye shal go forth, & multipply as the fat calues.

²⁵ At that time Iesus aunswered and said: I prayse the, O father Lorde of heauen and earth, because thou hast hid these thinges from the wyse and prudent, and hast opened theim vnto babes:

³ and in the mornynge ye saye: to daye shalbe foule wedder, & that because the skie is cloudy and redde. O ye hypocrites ye can discerne the fashion of the skie and can ye not discerne the signes of the times

³² Learne a symylytude of the fygge tre: when his braunches are yet tendre, and his leaues spronge, ye knowe that sommer is nye, ³³ so lykewyse ye, when ye se all these thynges, be ye sure that it is neare euen at the dores.

⁴² saiyng: Yf thou haddest knowen those thynges which belong vnto thy peace, euen at thys thy tyme. But now are they hydde from thyne eyes. ⁴³ For the dayes shall come vpon the, that thyne enemyes shal cast a banke aboute the, & compasse the round and kepe the on euerye syde, ⁴⁴ and make the euen with the grounde, with children whiche are in the. And they shall not leaue in the one stone vpon another, because thou knowest not the tyme of thy visitacyon.

²⁴ Also all the Prophetes from Samuel and thence forth, as manye as haue spoken, haue in lykewyse tolde of these dayes. ²⁵ Ye are the chyldren of the prophetes and of the couenaunt, which God hath made vnto our fathers saiynge to Abraham: Euen in thy sede shall all the kynredes of the earthe be blessed. ²⁶ Fyrste vnto you hath God raysed vp his sonne Iesus, and hym he hath sent to blesse you, that euery one of you shuld turne from your wickednes.

⁴ But when the tyme was full come, God sente hys sonne made of a woman, and made bonde vnto the lawe,

²⁹ I would they were wyse and vnderstode thys & woulde consider their later ende.

¹⁰ And he called the people vnto hym, & sayd to them, heare and vnderstande. ¹¹ That whych goeth into the mouth, defileth not the man: but that whych commeth out of the mouthe, defileth the man. ¹² Then came hys disciples, and sayde vnto hym: Perceyuest thou not, how that the Phariseis are offended in hearing thys saying? ¹³ He aunswered and sayd: al plantes whiche my heauenly father hath not planted, shalbe plucked vp by the rootes. ¹⁴ Let them alone, thei be the blynde leaders of the blynd. If the blynd leede the blynde, both shall fall into the dytche.

²¹ Iesus answered, and sayd vnto them: Verelye I say vnto you: if ye shal haue fayth, and shall not dout ye shall not onely do that which I haue done to the fygge tree but also yf ye shall saye vnto thys mountayne, take thy selfe awaye and cast thy selfe into the sea it shall be done.

³² For Iohn came vnto you in the waye of ryghtuousnes, and ye beleued hym not. But the Publicans and the harlotes beleued hym. And yet ye (thoughe ye sawe it) were not yet moued wyth repentaunce, that ye myght afterwarde haue beleued hym.

³⁰ when they shut forth their buddes, ye se and knowe of your owne selues that sommer is then nye at hande.

²⁴ Iudge not after the vtter aperaunce: but iudge rightuouse iudgemente.

⁴⁰ And wyth manye other wordes bare he wytnes and exhorted them saiynge: Saue your selues from thys vntowarde generacion.

²⁶ Ye men and brethren, chyldren of the generacyon of Abraham, and whosoeuer amonge you, feareth God, to you is this worde of saluacyon sente. ²⁷ The inhabiters of Ierusalem & theyr rulers, because they knowe him not, nor yet the voices of the prophetes which are reade euerye Saboth daye, they haue fulfylled them in condempnyng hym. ²⁸ And when they found no cause of death in hym, yet desyred they Pylate to kyll hym. ²⁹ And when they had fulfilled all that were written on hym, they toke hym doune from the tree, and put hym in a sepulchre. ³⁰ But God raysed hym agayne from death, ³¹ and he was sene manye dayes of them whiche came with hym from Galile to Ierusalem, Which are hys wytnesses vnto the people. ³² And we declare vnto you, how that the promes made vnto the fathers, ³³ God hath fulfylled vnto vs theyr children, in that he raysed vp Iesus agayne, euen as it is wryten in the fyrste psalme: Thou arte my sonne, thys same daye begat I the. ³⁴ As concernyng that he raysed hym vp from death, nowe no more to returne to corrupcion, he sayed on thys wyse. The holy promyses made to Dauid, I wyll geue them faythfully to you. ³⁵ Wherfore he sayth also in another place: Thou shalte not suffer thyne holy one to se corrupcyon. ³⁶ Howbeit Dauid after he had in hys tyme fulfylled the wyll of God, he slepte, and was layde with hys fathers, and sawe corrupcyon. ³⁷ But he whome God raysed agayne, sawe no corrupcyon. ³⁸ Be it knowen vnto you therfore ye men & brethren, that thorowe thys man is preached vnto you the forgeuenes of synnes,

¹⁴ Or els doeth not nature teache you that it is a shame for a man,

³ Iacob sent messengers before him to Esau hys brother, vnto the land of Seir, and the fyeld of Edom ⁴ And he commaunded theym sayinge: see that ye speake after thys maner to my Lord Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayeth thus. I haue soiourned and bene a straunger wyth Laban vnto thys time, ⁵ and haue gotten oxen, asses, and shepe, menseruauntes & womenseruauntes, & haue sent to shew it my Lord, that I may finde grace in thy sight. ⁶ And the messengers came againe to Iacob sayinge: we came vnto thi brother Esau, & he commeth agaynst the & .iiij. hundred men wyth him. ⁷ Then was Iacob greatly afrayed, & wyste not whych way to turne him selfe, and deuided the people that was wyth hym, and the shepe, oxen, & camels, into .ij. companyes, ⁸ & sayd: If Esau come to the one part & smite it the other maye saue it selfe. ⁹ And Iacob said: O god of mi father Abraham, & God of my father Isaac: Lord whiche saydest vnto me, returne vnto thy countrye & to thy kynred, & I wyll do all well with the. ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercies & trueth whyche thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunt. For wyth my stafe came I ouer thys Iordane, & now haue I goten two droues. ¹¹ Deliuer me from the handes of my brother Esau: for I feare hym: least he wyll come and smyte the mother wyth the chyldren. ¹² Thou saydest that thou wouldest surely do me good, and wouldest make my sede as the sande of the sea, whyche canne not be numbred for multitude. ¹³ And he taried ther that same nyghte, and toke of that which came to hand a present, vnto Esau hys brother ¹⁴ .ij. hundred she gootes, and .xx. he gootes: .ij. hundred shepe, and .xx. rammes: ¹⁵ thyrtye mylch camels wyth their coltes .xl. kyne, and .x. bulles .xx. she asses, & .x. foles, ¹⁶ and deliuered theym vnto hys seruauntes, euery droue by them selues, & said vnto theim, go forth before me & put a space betwyxte euerye droue. ¹⁷ And he commaunded the formest sayinge. When Esau mi brother meteth the & axeth the sayinge: whose seruaunte arte thou and whither goest thou, and whose are these that go before the: ¹⁸ thou shalte say they be thy seruaunt Iacobs, and are a present sent vnto my Lorde Esau, and beholde he him selfe commeth after vs. ¹⁹ And so commaunded he the second, & euen so the thyrd, & likewise al that folowed the droues sayinge, of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau saying when ye mete hym, ²⁰ & said moreouer. Behold thy seruaunt Iacob cometh after vs, for he said. I wyl pease his wrath wt the present that goth before me, and afterward I wil se hym my selfe, so peraduenture he wil receiue me to grace. ²¹ So wente the present before hym and he taried all that nyght in the tent, ²² and rose vp the same night and toke hys two wyues, and his two maydens and hys .xi. sonnes, and went ouer the fourd Iabok. ²³ And he toke them and sent them ouer the ryuer, and sente ouer that he had, ²⁴ & taried behind hym selfe alone. And ther wresteled a man wyth him vnto the breaking of the day. ²⁵ And when he sawe that he could not preuayle agaynste hym, he smote hym vnder the thye, & the senowe of Iacobs thye shranke as he wrestled with him ²⁶ And he said: let me goo, for the day breaketh. And he said: I wyll not lette the go, excepte thou blesse me. ²⁷ And he sayd vnto hym: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob. ²⁸ And he said: thou shalt be called Iacob no more, but Israel. For thou hast wresteled with God and hast preuayled.

¹⁸ Then Abigail made hast and toke two hundred loues and two botelles of wine, and fiue shepe redy dressed and fyue measures of parched corne, and an hundred bondelles of reasings, and two hundred frayles of fygges, and laded them on asses, ¹⁹ & sayde vnto her younge men: go before me, & se I come after you, and tolde her husbande Nabal nothing therof: ²⁰ and as she rode on her asse and was coming doune in a slade of the hyll, Dauid and his men came doune against her and she met them. ²¹ And Dauid sayde: in vayne haue I kept all that this felowe had in the wildernesse, so that nought was myssed that pertayneth vnto him, for he hath quytte me with euyll for good. ²² So and so do God vnto the enemies of Dauid, as I wil not leaue of all that pertaine to hym, by the daunynge of the daye, ought that pisseth agaynst the wall. ²³ When Abigail sawe Dauid, she halted & light of her asse, and fell before Dauid on her face, and bowed her selfe to the grounde, ²⁴ and fel at his fete and sayde: Let thys vnhappye deade be counted myne, my lord, and let thine handmaid speake in thine audience, and heare the wordes of thy handmayde. ²⁵ Let not my Lorde regarde thys vnthryftye man Nabal, for as hys name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and follye is with him. But I thine handmayde sawe not the younge men of my lorde whiche thou sendest. ²⁶ And nowe my lord as sure as the lorde lyueth and as thy soule lyueth, the Lorde hathe witholden the from commyng to shede bloud and from aduenging thy self with thine own hande. Forthermore I praye God that thyne enemies and they that entende to do my Lord euyl, may be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this blessing, whiche thine handmaide hath brought, let it be geuen vnto the young men that folowe my Lorde. ²⁸ Forgeue the trespace of thine handmaide that the Lorde may make my lord a suer house, because my Lorde fyghteth the battelles of the Lorde, and there coulde none euill be founde in the in all thy lyfe. ²⁹ And yf any man rise to persecute the and to seke thy soule the soule of my Lorde be bounde in a bondel of lyfe with the Lorde thy God. And thy soules of thy enemies be slong in the midle of a slinge. ³⁰ And moreouer when the Lorde shal haue done to my Lord all the good that he hath promysed the, and shal haue made the ruler ouer Israel: ³¹ then shall it be no grudge of conscience vnto the or discourage of herte vnto my Lorde, that thou sheddest bloud causelesse and dyddest aduenge thy selfe. And moreouer when the Lorde shall haue dealt wel with my Lorde, then thinck on thine handmayde. ³² Then sayde Dauid to Abigail: blessed be the Lorde God of Israel which sent the this daie to mete me. ³³ And blessed be thy behaueoure, and blessed be thou whyche hast kept me this daye from coming to shed bloud and from aduenging my selfe with mine own hande. ³⁴ For in very dede as sure as the Lorde God of Israel liueth whiche hath kept me backe from hurting the, excepte thou haddest hasted and met me, there hath not bene lefte Nabal by the dauninge of the daye, a pysser against the wall. ³⁵ And so Dauid receyued of her hand that she brought hym, and sayde to her: go in peace to thine house. And se I haue obeyed thy voyce, and haue receyued the to grace.

²¹ Therfore reconcile the vnto God, and be content, so shall all thinges prospere wyth the ryghtwell.

⁷ Oh no, let him not do so with me. But let him geue me lyke power to go to the lawe, then am I sure to winne my matter.

¹⁷ Neuerthelesse thou haste condemned the iudgemente of the vngodly, yea euen suche a iudgement and sentence shalt thou suffre. ¹⁸ For then shall not thy cause be stylled wyth crueltie, nor pacyfyed wyth manye gyftes.

⁶ For thys shall euerye sayncte make hys prayer vnto the in due season, therfore shall not, the great water fludes, come nie hym.

²² O considre this, ye that forget God: lest I plucke you awaye, and there be none too delyuer you.

¹ My son, if thou be suerty for thy neyghboure, thou hast fastened thyne hand wyth another man: ² yet thou art bound with thyne owne wordes, & taken wt thine owne speache. ³ Therfore, my sonne, do thys discharge thy selfe, for thou art come into thy neyghboures daunger. Go thy way then sone and intreate thy neighbour: ⁴ let not thine eies slepe ner thyne eye lyddes slomber. ⁵ Saue thy selfe as a doo from the hande, and as a byrde from the handes of the fouler.

⁸ Be not hastye to go to the law, lest happely thou order thy selfe so at the laste, that thy neighbour put the to shame. ⁹ Handle thy mater wt thy neyghbour him self, and dyscouer not an other mans secrete:

⁶ Seke the Lorde, whyle he maye be founde, & call vpon hym whyle he is nye.

²³ Therefore when thou offrest thy gift at the altare, & their remembrest that thy brother hath ought against the: ²⁴ leue there thy offringe before the altare, & go thy way first & be reconciled to thy brother, & then come and offre thy gift. ²⁵ Agre with thine aduersary quickly, whiles thou art in the way wt him, lest the aduersary deliuer the to the iudge, & the iudge deliuer the to the minister, & then thou be cast into prison. ²⁶ I say vnto the verely: thou shalt not come out thence tyl thou haue payed the vttermost farthing.

³⁰ But he woulde not, but wente and cast hym into pryson till he shoulde pay the det.

²⁴ stryue with your selues to enter in at the strayte gate: For manye I saye vnto you wyl seke to enter in, & shal not be able. ²⁵ When the good man of the house is rysen vp, and hathe shut to the dore, ye shall begynne to stande without, and to knocke at the dore, saiynge: Lorde Lorde open to vs: and he shall aunswere and saye vnto you: I knowe you not whence ye are. ²⁶ Then shal ye begyn to say: We haue eaten, in thy presence and dronke, and thou haste taught in oure stretes. ²⁷ And he shall saye: I tell you I knowe you not whence ye are: departe frome me all ye workers of iniquitie. ²⁸ There shalbe wepynge and gnashing of teth, when ye shall se Abraham and Isaac and Iacob, and all the Prophetes in the kingdome of God, and your selues thruste oute at dores.

³¹ Or what kynge goeth to make batayle agaynste another kynge, & sytteth not doune fyrste, and casteth in hys mynd, whyther he be able with ten thousande to mete hym that cometh against him with twentye thousande. ³² Or els whyle the other is yet a great waye of, he wyll send embassetours, and desire peace.

² For he sayeth: I haue hearde the in a tyme accepted: and in the day of saluacyon. haue I succoured the. Beholde nowe is that well accepted tyme: behold now is that daye of saluacyon.

⁷ Wherfore as the holy ghoste sayeth, to daye yf ye shal heare his voice, ⁸ harden not youre hertes, after the rebellion in the day of temptacion in the wyldernes, ⁹ where youre fathers tempted me, proued me, and sawe my workes .xl. yeares longe. ¹⁰ Wherfore I was greued wyth that generacion and sayde. They erre euer in their hertes, they verely haue not knowen my wayes, ¹¹ so that I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my reste. ¹² Take hede brethren, that there be in none of you an euyll herte in vnbeleue, that he shoulde departe from the lyuinge God: ¹³ but exhorte one another dayly, whyle it is called to daye, leste anye of you wexe harde herted thorowe the deceythfulnesse of synne.

¹⁹ In which spirite, he also wente and preached vnto the spirites that were in prison,

⁷ And when the thousand yeres are expired, Sathan shal be loused out of hys pryson,

³⁴ And his lord was wroth and deliuered him to the iaylers, til he should paye all that was due to hym.

⁴² And there came a certayne poore wydowe, and she threwe in two mites, which make a farthynge.

²⁶ Beyonde all thys, betwene you and vs there is a great space set, so that they whiche would go from hence to you can not, neyther maye come from thence to vs.

³ We are bounde to thanke God alwayes for you brethren, as it mete, because that your fayth groweth excedingly, and euerye one of you swimmeth in loue towarde another betwene youre selues,
