¹ And after that I saw another angel come from heauen, hauinge greate power, & the earth was lightened wt his brighnes. ² And he cryed mightely with a strong voyce, saing: Great Babylon is fallen, is fallen: and is become the habitacion of deuilles, and the holde of al foule spyrytes, and a cage of al vncleane and hateful byrdes, ³ for al nacyons haue dronken of the wyne of the wrath of her fornicacion. And the kinges of the earth haue committed fornicacion wyth her, & her marchauntes are wexed riche of the aboundance of her pleasures. ⁴ And I hearde another voice from heauen say: Come awaye from her my people, that ye be not partakers in her sinnes, & that ye receiue not of her plages. ⁵ For his sonnes are gone vp to heauen, & God hath remembred her wickednes. ⁶ Reward her euen as she rewarded you, & geue her double accordinge to her workes. And youre in double to her in the same cuppe, which she fylled vnto you. ⁷ And as muche as she glorified her selfe and lyued wantonly, so muche poure ye in for her of punishment, & sorowe, for she said in her herte: I sytte being a quene and am no wydowe, and shall se no sorowe. ⁸ Therfore shal her plages come at one daye, death, and sorowe, and honger, and she shalbe brente wyth fyre, for stronge is the Lorde God, whiche iudgeth her. ⁹ And the kynges of the earth shal bewepe her & wayle ouer her, which haue committed fornicacion with her, & haue lyued wantonly with her, when they shal se the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ & shal stand a farre of, for feare of her punishmente, saying: Alas, Alas, that great citie Babilon, that myghty cytie. For at one houre is her iudgemente come. ¹¹ And the marchauntes of the earth, shal wepe and wayle in them selues, for no man wil bye their ware anye more, ¹² the ware of gold, & syluer, & precious stones, neither of pearle, sylke, and raynes, & purple, & skarled, and al thin wode, & all maner vessels of iuory, & al maner vessels of most precious wode, and of brasse, and of Iron, ¹³ & sinamome, and odoures, and oyntmentes, & frankinsence, and wine, and oyle, and fine floure, and wheat, beastes, and shepe, and horsses, & charrettes, and bodyes, and soules of men. ¹⁴ And the apples that thy soule lusted after are departed from the. And al thinges which were deyntye, & had in price are departed from the, & thou shalt finde them no more. ¹⁵ The marchauntes of these thinges, which were wexed riche shal stand a farre of from her, for feare of the punishement of her, weping & waylynge, ¹⁶ & saying: alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in raines, & purple, and scarlet, & decked wt gold, & precious stones, & pearles, ¹⁷ for at one hour so great riches is come to nought. And euery shyp gouerner, & al they that occupied shippes, & shipmen which worke in the sea, stode a farre of ¹⁸ & cried, when they saw the smoke of her burninge, sayinge: what citie is lyke vnto this great citie? ¹⁹ And they cast duste on their heades, & cried weping, & wailing, & said: Alas, alas the greate citye wherin were made riche al that had shippes in the sea, by the reason of her costlines, for at one houre is she made desolate. ²⁰ Reioice ouer her thou heauen, and ye holy Apostles, & prophetes: for God hath geuen your iudgemente on her. ²¹ And a mighty angel toke vp a stone lyke a greate mylstone, & cast it into the sea, saying: wyth such violence shal that greate citie Babilon be caste, and shalbe found no more. ²² And the voice of harpers, & musicions, and of pipers, & trompeters, shalbe hearde no more in the, and no craftes man, of whatsoeuer crafte he be, shalbe founde any more in the, & the sound of a myl, shalbe hard no more in the, ²³ and the voice of the brydegrome and of the bryde, shalbe hard no more in the, for thy marchauntes were the greate men of the earth. And wt thyne inchauntment were deceiued al nacions, ²⁴ & in her was found the bloud of the prophetes, and of the sainctes and of al that were slayne vpon the earth.

¹ And therfore get the vp by tymes, for thy lyght cometh, and the glory of the Lorde shall ryse vp vpon the. ² For lo, whyle the darcknesse and cloude couered the earth and the people, the Lorde shal shew the lyght, and hys glorye shalbe sene in the. ³ The Gentyles shal come to thy light, & kynges to the brightnes that springeth forth vpon the.

² Beholde, then came the glorye of the God of Israell from out of the east, whose voyce was lyke a greate noyse of waters, and the earth was lyghtened wyth hys glory.

²⁴ for as the lyghtenynge that appeareth out of the one part of the heauen, and shyneth vnto the other parte of heauen: So shall the sonne of man be in his daye.

⁸ And then shall that wicked be vttered, whome the Lorde shall consume with the spirite of hys mouth, and shall destroye wt the aperaunce of hys commynge.

¹ And I sawe an other myghtye angel come doune from heauen, clothed wyth a cloude, and the rayne bowe vpon hys heade. And hys face as it were the sunne, and hys fete as it were pyllars of fyr

¹ And there came one of the seuen angelles, which had the seuen vialls, and talked with me, saiynge vnto me, come I wil shew the, the iudgement of the great whore that sytteth vpon manye waters,

⁷ And the angel said vnto me, wherfore maruailest thou? I wil shewe the the mistery of the woman, & of the beast that beareth her, whyche had seuen heades & .x. hornes.

²³ & the cytye hath no nede of the sunne neyther of the mone to lyghten it. For the bryghtnes of God dyd lyght it, & the lambe was the lyght of it.

¹³ These are the foules which ye shal abhorre, & whych shal not be eaten, for they are an abhomination. The egle, the goshauke, the cormoraunte, ¹⁴ the kyete, the vulture & al his kind ¹⁵ & all kynde of rauens, ¹⁶ the estriche, the nightcrowe, the cocow, the sparowhauke, & al the kynde: ¹⁷ the lytle oule, the storcke, the greate oule, ¹⁸ the backe, the pellicane, the pye, ¹⁹ the heron, the iay with the kynd, the lapwyng, and the swalowe.

¹⁹ And Babylon (that glory of kingedomes and bewtye of the Caldees honoure) shalbe destroied, euen as God destroyed Sodome and Gomorra. ²⁰ It shall neuer be more inhabyted, neyther shal there be any more dwellynge there from generacion to generacyon. The Arabians shall make no more tentes there, neyther shall the shepardes make their foldes ther any more: ²¹ but wild beastes shal lye there, & the houses shalbe full of greate Oules. Estriches shall dwel there, and Apes shall daunse there: ²² the lytle Oules shal crye in the palaces, one after another, and Dragons shalbe in the plesaunt parlours. And as for Babilons tyme it is at hande, & her dayes maye not be longe absent.

²³ and wyll geue it to the Oiters, and wyl make water podles of it. And I wyll swepe them oute with the besome of destruccyon, sayeth the Lorde of Hostes.

⁸ And the lyon cryed: Lorde, I haue stande waytynge all the whole daye, and haue kepte my watch all the night. ⁹ Wyth that came there one rydinge vpon a charet, whyche answered, and sayde: Babilon is fallen, she is turned vp syde doune and al the ymages of her Godes are smytten to the grounde.

¹¹ But Pellicanes, Storkes, great Dules, and Rauens shall haue it in possessyon, and dwell therin. For God shall sprede out the lyne of desolacyon vpon it, and weye it with the stones of emptynes. ¹² When kinges are called vpon there shalbe none, and all prynces shalbe awaye. ¹³ Thornes shall growe in their palaces, nettels and thistles in theyr stronge holdes, that the dragons maye haue their pleasure therin, and that they maye be a courte for Estriches. ¹⁴ There shall straunge visures and monstruous beastes mete one another, and the wilde kepe companye together. There shall the lamya lye, and haue her lodginge. ¹⁵ There shall the hedghoge buylde, digge, be there at home, and brynge forth hys younge ones. There shall the kytes come together, ech one to his lyke.

³⁰ Therfore tell them all these wordes, and saye vnto them: The Lorde shall crye from aboue, and let hys voyce be hearde from his holy habitacion. Wyth a greate noyse shall he crye from his courte regall. He shall geue a greate voyce (like the grape gatherers) and the sounde thereof shalbe hearde vnto the endes of the worlde.

³⁹ Therfore shall wylde beastes, Apes, and Estriches dwell therin: for there shall neuer man dwell there, neyther shal any man haue his habitacion there for euermore. ⁴⁰ Lyke as God destroyed Sodome and Gomorre, with the cities that laye there aboute, sayeth the Lord: So shall no man dwell there also, nether shall any man haue there hys habitacyon.

⁸ But sodenly is Babylon fallen, & destroyed. Mourne for her, bryng plasters for her woundes, yf she may peraduenture be healed agayne.

³⁷ Babilon shalt become an heape of stones a dwellinge place for dragons, a fearfulnes and wondrynge, because no man dwelleth there.

⁶⁰ Ieremye wrote in a boke all the mysery that shulde come vpon Babylon, yee and all these sermons that be wrytten agaynst Babylon, ⁶¹ and gaue Saraiah thys charge: When thou commest vnto Babylon se that thou reade all these wordes, ⁶² and saye: O Lorde, thou art determed to rote out thys place, so that nether people ner catell shall dwell there eny more but to lie waste for eu ⁶³ and when thou hast redde out the boke, bynde a stone to it, and cast it in the myddest of Euphrates, ⁶⁴ and saye: Euen thus shall Babylon syncke, & be thrust downe with the burthen of trouble, that I will bringe vpon her: so that she shall neuer come vp agayne. Thus farre are the preachinges of Ieremy.

¹⁶ The Lorde shal roare oute of Syon, and crye oute of Ierusalem, that the heauens & the earthe shall quake wythal. But the Lorde shalbe a defence vnto his owne people, & a refuge for the chyldren of Israel.

¹⁴ The flockes & all the beastes of the people shall lye in the middeste of it, pellicanes & storckes shall abyde in the vpperpostes of it, soules shall synge in the wyndowes, & rauens shall syt vpon the balckes, for the borders of Cedre shal be ryuen doune.

³ whiche had hys abydyng among the graues. And no man coulde bynde him: no not with chaynes, ⁴ because that when he was often bounde with fetters and chayns, he plucked the chayns a sunder, & brake the fetters in peces. Neyther coulde any man tame him. ⁵ And alwayes both nyght and daye he cryed in the mountaynes & in the graues, and bet hym self with stones.

²⁷ And as he went out to lande, there mete him a certaine man out of the citie, which had a deuil long time, & ware no clothes, neither abode in anye house: but amonge graues. ²⁸ When he sawe Iesus he cried and fel doune before him, and with a loud voice saied: What haue I to do with the Iesus the sonne of the God moste hiest? I besech the tormente me not.

¹⁵ & hys fete lyke vnto brasse, as thoughe they brent in a fornace: & his voice as the sound of many waters.

² And I sawe a stronge angel, which cryed wyth a loude voyce: Who is worthy to open the boke, and to lose the seales therof?

³ And cryed wyth a loude voyce, as when a Lyon roreth. And when he had cried, seuen thonders spake their voyces.

⁸ And there folowed another angel, sayinge: Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, for she made al nacions drinke of the wine of her fornicacion.

¹⁵ And another angel came out of the temple, criynge wyth a loude voyce to him that sate on the cloud. Thruste in thy sykle and reape for the time is come, to reape, for the corne of the earth is rype.

¹³ And I sawe thre vncleane sprytes, lyke frogges come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast, & out of the mouth of the false prophete.

¹⁹ And the greate city was deuided into thre parties, & the cyties of al nacions fel. And great Babilon came in remembraunce before God, to geue vnto her the cup of the wine of the fyercenes of his wrath.

⁵ And in her forhead was a name wrytten, a mystery, great Babylon the mother of whoredome and abominacions of the earth.

¹⁸ And the woman, which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth ouer the kinges of the earth.

¹⁰ & shal stand a farre of, for feare of her punishmente, saying: Alas, Alas, that great citie Babilon, that myghty cytie. For at one houre is her iudgemente come.

¹ When thou syttest at the table to eate with a lorde, order thy selfe manerly with the thinges that are set before the. ² Measure thine appetite: and if thou wilt rule thyne owne selfe, ³ be not ouer gredye of his meate, for meate begyleth and disceaueth

¹⁵ Euen so shall they be vnto the whome thou haste vsed and occupied from thy youthe. Euery one shall shewe the hys erroneous waye, yet shall none of them defende the.

⁷ Babylon hath bene in the Lordes hande a golden cuppe, that maketh all landes droncken. Of her wyne haue all people droncken, therfore are they oute of theyr wyttes.

³⁴ Nabuchodonosor the kynge of Babylon hath deuoured & destroyed me, he hath made me an emptye vessell. He swalowed me vp lyke a dragon, and filled his bely with my delycates: he hath cast me oute,

⁵ He. They that were wonte to fayre delicatly, peryshe in the streates: they that a fore were brought vp in purple, make now moche of donge.

⁹ The eldest and wisest at Gebal were they, that mended and stopped thy shippes. All shippes of the sea with their shipmen occupied their marchaundyes in the. ¹⁰ The Perses, Lydians and Lybians were in thine host, & helped the to fight: these hanged vp their shildes & helmettes wt the, these set forth thy bewty. ¹¹ They of Arnad were with thine host round about thy walles, and were thy watchmen vpon thy towres, these hanged vp their shildes rounde aboute thy walles, & made the maruelous goodlye. ¹² Tharsis occupied wt the in all maner of wares, in siluer, yron, tinne & lead, and made thy market great. ¹³ Iauan, Tubal, & Mesech were thy marchauntes which brought the men, & ornamentes of metal for thy occupying. ¹⁴ They of the house of Thogarma brought vnto the at the tyme of thy marte, horse, horsmen and mules. ¹⁵ They of Dedan were thy marchauntes: & many other Iles that occupied with the, brought the whethers, elephant bones and Paycockes for a present. ¹⁶ The Sirians occupied wt the, because of thy diuerse worckes, & increased thy marchaundies, with Smaragdes, with scarlet, with nedle worcke, wt white lynen cloth, with silcke and with Christall. ¹⁷ Iuda and the lande of Israel occupied with the, and brought vnto thy markettes, wheate balme, hony, oyle and triacle. ¹⁸ Damascus also vsed marchaundyes with the, in the beste wine and whyte woll, because the occupying was so greate, & thy wares so manye. ¹⁹ Dan, Iauan, and Meusall haue broughte vnto thy markettes, yron redy made, with Casia and Calamus, accordinge to thyne occupyinge. ²⁰ Dedan occupied with the, in fayre tapestrye worcke & quishins. ²¹ Arabia & al the prynces of Cedar haue occupied with the, in shepe, wethers and goates. ²² The marchauntes of Seba and Rema haue occupied also with the, in al costlye spices, in all precious stones and goulde, which they broughte vnto thy markettes. ²³ Haran, Chene and Eden, the marchauntes of Saba, Assiria and Chelmad, were al doers with the, ²⁴ and occupyed with the: In costly raiment, of yalow silcke and nedle worcke (very precious, and therfore packte & bounde together with roapes) Yea and in Cedre wood, of the tyme of thy markettes. ²⁵ The shippes of Tharsis were the chefe of thy occupyinge. Thus thou art ful, and in great worshippe euen in the middest of the sea.

²⁵ But what went ye out for to se? a man clothed in softe raiment? Beholde they which are gorgeouslye apparilled, and lyue delicatly are in kinges courtes.

¹ There were false prophetes among the people, euen as there shalbe false teachers amonge you, which priuilie shal bringe in damnable sectes, euen denyenge the Lorde that hath bought them and bringe vpon them selues swyft dampnacion, ² and many shal folowe theyr damnable wayes, by whiche the way of trueth shalbe euyl spoken of, ³ and thorowe couetousnes shal they wyth fayned wordes make marchaundyse of you, whose iudgement is not farre of, and theyr dampnacion slepeth not.

² wt whom haue committed fornicacion the kinges of the earth so that the inhabiters of the earth, are drounken wyth the wyne of her fornicacion.

⁹ And the kynges of the earth shal bewepe her & wayle ouer her, which haue committed fornicacion with her, & haue lyued wantonly with her, when they shal se the smoke of her burning,

¹² And the men sayde moreouer vnto Lot: If thou haue yet here any sonne in law or sonnes or doughters or what so euer thou haste in the cytie, brynge it out of thys place: ¹³ for we must destroy thys place, because the crye of them is great before the Lorde. Wherfore he hath sent vs to destroy it.

²⁶ And he spake vnto the congregation saying: depart from the tentes of these wicked men & touche nothynge of theyrs: lest ye peryshe in al theyr synnes. ²⁷ And they gate them from the dwellynge of Corah, Dathan, and Abiram on euerye syde. And Dathan and Abiram came oute and stode in the dore of theyr tentes wyth theyr wyues, theyr sonne and theyr children.

¹⁸ If thou seist a thefe, thou runnest wyth him, and art partaker with the aduouterers.

²⁰ Ye shall go awaye from Babylon, and escape the Calders with a merye voyce. This shalbe spoken of, declared abroad, and go forth vnto the ende of the worlde, so that it shalbe sayde: The Lorde hathe defended hys seruaunte Iacob,

¹¹ Awaye, awaye, get you oute from thence, and touche no vnclean thing. Go oute from amonge suche. And be cleane, ye that beare the vessell of the Lorde.

⁸ Yet shall ye fle from Babilon, & depart out of the lande of the Caldees, and ye shall be as the rammes that go before the flocke.

⁶ Flye awaye from Babylon, euery man saue hys lyfe. Let no man holde hys tonge to her wyckednes, for the tyme of the Lordes vengeaunce is come, yea he shall rewarde her agayne.

⁴⁵ O my people, come out of Babylon, that euery man maye saue his lyfe, from the fearfull wrath of the Lorde.

⁵⁰ Ye that haue escaped the swearde, haste you, stande not styll, remembre the Lorde afarre of: and thincke vpon Ierusalem,

³⁰ and saye: if we had bene in the dayes of our fathers, we woulde not haue bene parteners with them in the bloude of the Prophetes.

¹⁵ When ye therfore shall se the abhomination that betokeneth desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophete, stande in the holye place (let hym that readeth it, vnderstande it) ¹⁶ then let theim which be in Iurye, flye into the mountaines.

¹⁷ Wherfore come out from among them, and separate youre selues (sayeth the Lorde) and touche none vncleane thynge: so wyll I receyue you,

²² Laye handes sodenly on no man, neyther be partakers of other mennes synnes: kepe thy self pure.

¹¹ For he that biddeth him God spede, is partaker of his euyll dedes.

²⁰ And the Lord sayd? The crye of Sodome and Gomorra is great, and their synne is excedynge greuous. ²¹ I wyll go doune and sea whether they haue done all to gether acordynge to that crye which is come vnto me or not, that I may knowe.

⁹ But there was a prophete of the Lordes named obed which went out to the Host that came to Samaria & sayde to them: se, because the Lorde God of your fathers was wroth with Iuda, he deliuered them into youre handes. And ye haue slayne them with cruelnesse that reacheth vp to heauen.

⁶ and sayde. My God I am ashamed, and darre not lyfte vp myne eyes vnto the my God: for our wyckednesses are growne ouer our heade, & oure trespaces are waxen greate vnto the heauen.

⁹ We wolde haue made Babylon whole (saye they) but she is not recouered. Therfore wyll we let her alone, & go euery man into hys owne countre. For her iudgemente is come into heauen, and is gone vp to the cloudes.

² Aryse, and get the to Niniue that greate cyte: & preache vnto them, how that their wyckednes is come vp before me.

²³ But and if any misfortune folow, then shall he pay lyfe for lyfe, ²⁴ eye for eye, toth for toth, hande, for hande, fote for fote, ²⁵ burnyng for burnynge, wounde for wounde, and strype for strype.

⁸ O daughter of Babilon, thou shalt come to mysery thyselfe: yea, happye shall he be, that rewardeth the as thou hast serued vs.

² conforte Ierusalem, and tell her: that her trauayle is at an ende that her offence is pardoned, that she hath receyued of the Lordes hande sufficient correccyon for all her synnes.

⁷ For your greate reprofe & shame, shall they haue ioy that ye may haue parte with them. For they shall haue double possession in their lande, & euerlastinge ioy shalbe with them.

¹⁸ But firste wyll I sufficientlye rewarde their shamefull blasphemies and synnes, wherwyth they haue defyled my lande: Namely, wyth their stinckyng Idols and obhominacions, wherwith they haue fylled myne heretage.

¹⁸ Let my persecuters be confounded, but not me: let them be afrayed, and not me. Thou shalt bringe vpon them the tyme of their plage, and shalt destroye them right sore.

¹⁵ Crye oute: vpon her, vpon her, agaynste her round about: she shall yelde her selfe, her foundacyons shal fall, and her walles shall come doune, for it shalbe the vengeaunce of the Lorde. Yea vengeaunce shalbe taken of her, and as she hath done, so shall she be dealte with al.

²⁹ Call vp all the archers agaynste Babylon, pytche youre tentes rounde aboute her, that none escape. Recompence her, as she hath deserued: and accordinge as she hath done, so deale wyth her agayne: for she hath set vp her selfe agaynste the Lorde, agaynste the holy one of Israel.

²⁴ Therfore wyl I rewarde the citie of Babylon and all her cytesens the Caldees with all the euyll whiche they haue done vnto Syon: yea that ye youre selues shall se it, sayeth the Lorde.

⁴⁹ Like as Babylon hath beaten downe and slayne many out of Israell, so shall there fall many, and be slayne in all her kyngdome.

¹² Turne you nowe to the strong holde, ye that be in preson, & long sore to be delyuered: And this daye I brynge the word, that I wil rewarde the double agayn.

¹⁴ Alexander the coppersmyth dyd me muche euyll, the Lorde rewarde him, according to hys dedes,

¹⁰ He that leadeth into captiuitie shal go into captiuitie, he that kylleth wt a sweard, must be kylled wyth a sweard. Here is the pacience and the fayth of the sainctes.

¹⁰ the same shall drynke of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured in the cup of this wrath. And he shalbe punished in fyre & brimstone before the holy angels, and before the lambe.

⁵ And I heard an angel say: Lord which art & wast, thou art rightuous & holy, because thou hast geuen such iudgementes, ⁶ for they shed out the bloud of sainctes, & prophetes, & therfore hast thou geuen them bloud to drinke, for they are worthy.

⁴ And the woman was arayed in purple & rose coloure, and decked wyth golde, precious stones and pearles, and had a cuppe of golde in her hand full of al abominacions and fylthines of her fornicacion.

⁹ Kynges daughters go in thy goodly aray and vpon thy right hande standeth the quene in a vesture of the most fyne golde.

¹² And at the same tyme shall the Lorde of Hostes call men to wepinge, mourninge, to baldnesse & puttynge on of sacke clothe. ¹³ But they to fulfil their lust and wilfulnes, slaughter oxen: they kyll shepe, they eate costly meate, and drincke wyne, let vs eate and drincke, to morow we shall dye. ¹⁴ Neuerthelesse when the Lorde of Hostes hearde of it, he sayde: yea, yf this wyckednes of yours shalbe remytted, ye must dye for it. This hathe the Lorde of Hostes spoken.

¹ Bvt as for the (O daughter thou virgin Babylon) Thou shalt syt in the dust thou shalt sit vpon the grounde, & not in a trone (O thou mayden of Chaldea.) Thou shalt no more be called tender and pleasaunt. ² Thou shalt bringe forth the querne and grind meele, put downe thy stomacher make bare thy knees & shalt wade thorow the water ryuers.

⁷ & thou thoughtest thus. I shalbe lady for euer. And desyde all that, thou hast not regarded these thinges, nether cast, what shuld come after. ⁸ Heare now therfore, thou wylful, that syttest so carelesse, & speakest thus in thine herte: I am alone, & without me is there none I shall neuer be wydowe, ner desolate agayne. ⁹ And yet both these thinges shall come to the vpon one daye in the twyncklyng of an eye: Namely wyddowhead, & desolacyon. They shall mightely fall vpon the, for the multitude of thy witches, & for the greate heape of thy coniurers.

¹⁸ Tell the kynge and the rulers: Humble youre selues, sett you downe lowe, for the crowne of youre glory shall fall from your head.

¹ Aleph. Alas, how sytteth the citie so desolate, that some tyme was full of people? How is she become lyke a wedowe, whiche was the ladye of all nacyons? How is she brought vnder trybute, that ruled all landes.

² Thou sonne of man, tell the Prince of Tyre. Thus saieth the lord god because thou haste a proude hert & hast said: I am a god: I haue my seate in the middest of the sea like a God, where as thou art but a man and not God, & yet standest in thine own conceyt, that thou art God. ³ Behold, thou thinckest thy self wyser then Daniel, that there is no secretes hyd from the. ⁴ With thy wysedome and thy vnderstanding, thou hast gotten the great welthinesse, and gathered treasure of syluer and goulde. ⁵ With thy great wysedome and occupying, hast thou increased thy power, and because of thy great ryches, thy hert is proude. ⁶ Therfore thus sayeth the Lord God: For so muche as thou hast lyft vp thyne herte, as though thou were God: ⁷ behold, I wil bring enemies vpon the, euen the tyrauntes of the Heathen: these shall drawe out their swerdes vpon thy bewtye and wysedome, and shall defyle thy glory. ⁸ They shall cast the doune to the pytte, so that thou shalt dye in the middest of the sea, ⁹ as they that be slayne. Let se, yf thou wylt saye then (before them that slaye the) I am God: where as thou arte but a man and not God, in the handes of them that slay the. ¹⁰ Dye shalte thou, euen as the vncircumcysed in the handes of the enemyes: for I my selfe haue spoken it, sayeth the Lord God.

¹⁵ Thys is the proude and carelesse cytye, that sayde in her herte: I am, and there is els none. O how is she made so wast that the beastes lye therein? Who so goeth by mocketh her, and poynteth at her wyth hys fynger.

⁴ whiche is an aduersarye, and is exalted aboue all that is called God, or that is worshypped: so that he shall sytte as God in the temple of God, and shewe hym selfe as God. ⁵ Remember ye not, that when I was yet with you, I tolde you these thynges? ⁶ And nowe ye knowe what withholdeth: euen that he myght be vttered at his tyme. ⁷ For the mysterye of that iniquitie doeth he al ready work whiche onelye loketh vntyll it be taken out of the waye. ⁸ And then shall that wicked be vttered, whome the Lorde shall consume with the spirite of hys mouth, and shall destroye wt the aperaunce of hys commynge.

¹⁹ If men wyll speake of strength, he is the strongest of all: yf men wyll speake of ryghtuousnes, who darre be my recorde.

¹¹ God spake once a worde, twyse haue I hearde the same: that power belongeth vnto God

¹ Then the Lorde with his heauye, great, & longe swerd shall vyset Leuyathan that inuyncible serpent: euen Leuiathan that croked serpent & shall slaye the whalfysh in the sea.

Myschefe shal fall vpon the, which thou shalt not be able to put of. A sodane myserye shall come vpon the, or euer thou be a warre.

³¹ Behold, I speake vnto the (O thou proude) sayeth the Lorde God of hostes: for thy daye shall come, euen the tyme of thy vysitacion.

³⁴ but theyr auenger & redemer is myghtye, whose name is the Lorde of hostes: he shal maintayne theyr cause, he shall make the lande shake, and iudge them that dwell therein, one wyth another.

⁵⁸ Moreouer, thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: The thycke wall of Babylon shalbe broken, & her proude gates shalbe brent vp. And the thynge that the Gentyles and the people haue wrought with greate trauayle and laboure, shal come to naught and be consumed in the fyre.

²² Either shall we prouoke the Lorde? Or are we stronger then he? All thinges are laufull vnto me, but all thinges are not expedient.

¹⁷ sayinge: we geue the thankes Lord GOD almyghty, whyche arte and wast, and arte to come, for thou hast receyued thy greate myght and hast reigned.

¹⁶ And the ten hornes, which thou sawest vpon the beast, are they that shal hate the whore, & shal make her desolate and naked, and shal eate her flesh and burne her wyth fyre.

⁹ And the kynges of the earth shal bewepe her & wayle ouer her, which haue committed fornicacion with her, & haue lyued wantonly with her, when they shal se the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ & shal stand a farre of, for feare of her punishmente, saying: Alas, Alas, that great citie Babilon, that myghty cytie. For at one houre is her iudgemente come.

¹⁷ for at one hour so great riches is come to nought. And euery shyp gouerner, & al they that occupied shippes, & shipmen which worke in the sea, stode a farre of

¹⁹ And they cast duste on their heades, & cried weping, & wailing, & said: Alas, alas the greate citye wherin were made riche al that had shippes in the sea, by the reason of her costlines, for at one houre is she made desolate.

³ And again they said: Alleluia. And smoke rose vp for euermore.

²⁸ and loked toward Sodome and Gomorra and towarde all the lande of that contre. And as he loked: behold the smoke of the countre arose as it had bene the smoke of a fornace.

²³ how all the land is burnt vp wyth bremstone & salt, & that it is nether sowne nor beareth, nor any grasse groweth therin, after the ouerthrowing of Sodome, Gomor, Adama and Zeboim: which the Lord ouerthrewe in his wrath and angre.

¹⁰ The ryghteous shal reioyse when he seith the vengeaunce, and shall washe hys fete in the bloud of the vngodly.

¹⁹ And Babylon (that glory of kingedomes and bewtye of the Caldees honoure) shalbe destroied, euen as God destroyed Sodome and Gomorra.

³³ For he hath prepared the fyre of payne from the begynnynge, yea euen for Kynges also. This hath he made depe & wyde, the noryshing thereof is fyre & woode innumerable, whiche the breathe of the Lorde kyndleth, as it were a matche of brymstone.

⁹ Thy floudes shalbe turned to pytch, and thyne earthe to brymstone, and ther wyth shall the lande be kyndled, ¹⁰ so that it shall not be quenched daye ner nyght: But smoke euermore, and so forth to lye waste. And no man shall go thorowe thy lande for euer:

⁴⁰ Lyke as God destroyed Sodome and Gomorre, with the cities that laye there aboute, sayeth the Lord: So shall no man dwell there also, nether shall any man haue there hys habitacyon.

⁴⁶ The noyse at the wynning of Babylon shall moue the earthe, & the crye shalbe hearde amonge the Gentyles.

¹⁶ Al kinges of the sea shall come doun from their seates regal, they shal laye awaye their roabes, & put of their costly clothinge. Yea with tremblinge shal they be clothed, they shall syt vpon the ground: they shalbe afrayed at thy soden fall, and be abashed at the. ¹⁷ They shall mourne for the, and saye vnto the: O thou noble city, that hast bene so greatly occupyed of olde, thou that haste bene the strongest vpon the sea with thine inhabitours of whom al men stode in feare: How art thou nowe so vtterlye destroyed?

⁹ I will trouble the hertes of many people, when I brynge thy destruccyon amonge the Heathen & countrees, whom thou knowest not. ¹⁰ Yea I wyl make many people with their kynges so afrayed thorowe the, that theyr hearre shal stand vp, when I shake my sweard at theyr faces Sodenly shall they be astonnyed, euerye man in hym selfe, at the day of thy fall.

¹⁴ & cryed myghtely, sayinge. Hew doune the tre, breake of hys braunches, shake of hys leaues, and scatre hys frute abroade: that all the beastes maye get them awaye from vnder hym, and the foules from his braunches.

² Howle ye fyrre trees, for the Cedre is fallen, yea, all the proude are wasted awaye. Howle (O ye oke trees of Baasan) for the mightye strong wood is cut doun ³ Men may heare the sheperdes mourne, for their glory is destroyed. Men may heare the lyons whelpes roare, for the pride of Iordan is wasted away.

¹¹ And the smoke of their tormente ascendeth vp euermore. And they haue no rest daye nor night, which worship the beaste & his ymage, and whosoeuer receiueth the prynt of hys name.

¹² And the .x. hornes, which thou seest, are .x. kinges, which haue receiued no kingdom, but shal receiue power as kynges at one hour with the beast. ¹³ These haue one minde, & shal geue their power & strength vnto the beast.

³ for al nacyons haue dronken of the wyne of the wrath of her fornicacion. And the kinges of the earth haue committed fornicacion wyth her, & her marchauntes are wexed riche of the aboundance of her pleasures.

⁷ And as muche as she glorified her selfe and lyued wantonly, so muche poure ye in for her of punishment, & sorowe, for she said in her herte: I sytte being a quene and am no wydowe, and shall se no sorowe.

¹⁸ & cried, when they saw the smoke of her burninge, sayinge: what citie is lyke vnto this great citie?

²⁰ Reioice ouer her thou heauen, and ye holy Apostles, & prophetes: for God hath geuen your iudgemente on her.

³⁴ Ad all Israel that were aboute them fledde at the cry of them. For they said: The earth myght haply swalow vs vp also.

⁹ Wyth that came there one rydinge vpon a charet, whyche answered, and sayde: Babilon is fallen, she is turned vp syde doune and al the ymages of her Godes are smytten to the grounde.

⁷ Alas for this daye, whiche is so dredefull, that none maye be lykened vnto it: and alas for the tyme of Iacobs trouble, from the whiche he shall yet be delyuered.

⁸ But sodenly is Babylon fallen, & destroyed. Mourne for her, bryng plasters for her woundes, yf she may peraduenture be healed agayne. ⁹ We wolde haue made Babylon whole (saye they) but she is not recouered. Therfore wyll we let her alone, & go euery man into hys owne countre. For her iudgemente is come into heauen, and is gone vp to the cloudes.

¹⁵ alas, alas, for thys daye. And why? the daye of the Lorde is at hand, and commeth as a destroyer from the almighty.

¹⁶ If no (sayeth the Lorde God, the God of hostes) there shal be mournynge in all stretes, yea they shal say in euerye strete: alas, alas. They shal cal the husband man to lamentacyon, and suche as can mourne to mournynge.

¹² And the .x. hornes, which thou seest, are .x. kinges, which haue receiued no kingdom, but shal receiue power as kynges at one hour with the beast.

⁸ Therfore shal her plages come at one daye, death, and sorowe, and honger, and she shalbe brente wyth fyre, for stronge is the Lorde God, whiche iudgeth her.

¹⁴ for the gettinge of it is better then any marchaundise of syluer, and the profet of it is better then golde.

¹ An heauy burthen vpon Tyrus. Mourne ye shippes of Tarsis, for she is throwen doune to the grounde, and conquered of them that are come from Cethim. ² The in dwellers of the Ilandes, the marchauntes of Sidon, & they that occupied the sea (of whom thou wast full sometyme) are at a poynt. ³ For by sea were there frutes brought vnto the, & all maner of corne by water. Thou wast the romen market of all people. ⁴ Sidon is sorye for it, yea and all the power of the sea complaineth, and sayeth: O that I had neuer trauayled with child, that I had neuer borne any that I had neither norished boye, nor brought vp doughter. ⁵ As sone as Egipte perceyueth it, she wilbe as sory as Tirus it selfe. ⁶ Go ouer the sea, mourne ye that dwel in the Iles. ⁷ Is not that the glorious cytye, whiche hath bene of longe antiquitie? whose natiues dwelling farre of, commende her so greatly? ⁸ Who hath deuysed suche thinges vpon Tirus the croune of al cities, whose marchauntes and captaines were the highest & principal of the world? ⁹ Euen the Lord of Hostes hath deuysed it, that he may put doune al pompe, & minish al the glory of the worlde. ¹⁰ Go thorowe thy land (O thou doughter of the sea) as men go ouer the water, and there is not a gyrdle more. ¹¹ Thus the Lord hath remoueth the kyngedomes, & hathe taken inhande agaynste that mighty Canaan to rote it out: hath stretched oute his hande ouer the sea, ¹² and saide: From henceforth shalt thou make no more myrthe, O thou doughter of Sidon: for thou shalt be put doune of the Cethens. Stand vp therfore and go where the enemy will cary the, where thou shalt also haue no reste. ¹³ Beholde (for thine ensample) The Chaldees were suche a people, that no man was like them, Assur builded them: he set vp his castels and palaces, & broke them doune agayn. ¹⁴ And therfore mourne (ye shippes of the sea) for youre power shalbe throwne doune. ¹⁵ After that, shall the .lxx. yeares of Tyrus (euen as longe as their kinges lyfe was) be forgotten. And after .lxx. yeares, it shall happen to Tirus as with an harlot that playeth vpon a lute.

¹⁷ They shall mourne for the, and saye vnto the: O thou noble city, that hast bene so greatly occupyed of olde, thou that haste bene the strongest vpon the sea with thine inhabitours of whom al men stode in feare: How art thou nowe so vtterlye destroyed? ¹⁸ Nowe at the tyme of thy fal the inhabytoures of the Iles, yea and the Iles them selues, shall stande in feare at thyne ende. ¹⁹ For thus sayeth the Lord God: when I make the a desolate cytye (as other cities be, that no man dwell in) and when I brynge the depe vpon the, that greate waters maye couer the: ²⁰ Then wyl I cast the doune vnto them, that descende into the pytte: vnto a people that hath bene longe deade, and set the in a lande that is beneth, lyke the olde wildernesse, with them whiche go doune to their graues, so that no man shall dwell more in the. And I wyll make the to be no more in honoure in the lande of the lyuynge. ²¹ I wil make an ende of the, and thou shalt be gone. Thoughe thou be sought for, yet shalte thou not be founde for euermore, sayeth the Lorde God.

²⁷ so that thy wares, thy marchaundies, thy riches, thy mariners, thy shipmaisters, thy helpers, thy occupiers (that brought the thinges necessarye) the men of warre that are in the: yea and all thy commens shall peryshe in the myddest of the sea, in the daye of thy fall. ²⁸ The suburbes shall shake at the loude crye of thy shipmen. ²⁹ All whirry men, and all maryners vpon the sea, shal leape oute of their boates, and let them selues vpon the land. ³⁰ They shal lyft vp their voice because of the, and make a lamentable crye. They shall cast dust vpon their heades, & lye doune in the ashes. ³¹ They shall shaue them selues, and put sacke clothe vpon them for thy sake. They shal mourne for the with hertfull sorowe, ³² and heauy lamentacion, yea their children also shal wepe for the. Alas, what cytye hath so bene destroyed in the sea, as Tyre is? ³³ When thy wares & marchaundies came from the seas, thou gauest al people ynoughe. The kinges of the earth hast thou made ryche, thorowe the multytude of thy wares and occupyinge. ³⁴ But thou art nowe caste doune into the depe of the sea, al thy resorte of people is perished with the. ³⁵ All they that dwell in the Iles are abashed at the, and all their kinges are afrayed, yea their faces haue chaunced colour. ³⁶ The marchauntes of the nacions wondre at the, In that thou arte so cleane broughte to naught, and commeth no more vp.

¹¹ Howle ye that dwell in the myll, for all the marchaunt people are gone, and al they that were laden with syluer, are roted oute.

¹⁸ Nether theyr syluer nor theyr golde shalbe able to delyuered them in the wrothfull daye of the Lorde, but the whole lande shalbe consumed thorow the fyre of his gelousy: for he shall soone make cleane ryddaunce of all them that dwell in the lande.

⁵ But they made lyght of it, and went theyr wayes: one to hys ferme place, an other about hys marchaundyse,

¹⁶ and sayd vnto them that solde doues: Haue these thinges hence & make not my fathers house an house of marchaundise.

³ and thorowe couetousnes shal they wyth fayned wordes make marchaundyse of you, whose iudgement is not farre of, and theyr dampnacion slepeth not.

¹⁶ And he made al both smale and greate, ryche and poore, free and bonde, to receyue a marke in theyr ryght handes, or in theyr forheades. ¹⁷ And that no man myghte by or sell, saue he that had the marke, or the name of the beaste, other the numbre of his name.

¹⁵ The marchauntes of these thinges, which were wexed riche shal stand a farre of from her, for feare of the punishement of her, weping & waylynge,

¹¹ And therto the shyppes of Hiram that brought goulde from Ophir, broughte from Ophir great plentye of Almuge tre & precyouse stones. ¹² And kynge Salomon made of the Almuge trees pyllers in the house of the Lord & in the kynges palace, & made harpes & Psalteryes for syngers There came no more Almuge tre so, nor was any more sene vnto this daye.

⁸ And sende me also Cedar trees, fyrre trees, & Algume trees out of Lybanon. For I wote well thy seruauntes can skylle to hew timbre in Lybanon. And se, my men shalbe wyth thyne,

¹⁰ Receiue my doctrine therfore, & not siluer: & my knowledge, more then fyne golde. ¹¹ For wysdome is more worth then precious stones, yea, all the thinges that thou canst desire, are not to be compared vnto it.

⁵ All thy tables haue they made of Cypre trees of the mount Sanir. From Libanus haue they taken Cedre trees, to make the mastes: ⁶ and the Okes of Basan to make the rowers. Thy boordes haue they made of yuery, & of costly wood out of the Ile of Cethim. ⁷ Thy sayle was of white small nedle worcke oute of the land of Egipte, to hang vpon thy mast & thy hanginges of yalowe sylcke purple, out of the Iles of Elisah. ⁸ They of Sydon and Arnah were thy mariners, and the wisest in Tyre were thy shipmaysters.

¹⁶ He that stealeth a man & selleth him (if it be proued vpon hym) shalbe slayne for it,

⁷ If any man be found stealyng any of hys brethren the chyldren of Israel, & maketh cheuesaunce of hym or selleth him, the thefe shall dye. And thou shalt put euell away from the.

⁶⁸ And the Lord shal brynge the into Egypt agayne with shyppes, by the way whych I bade the that thou shouldest se it no moare. And there ye shalbe solde vnto youre enemies, for bondmen and bondwemen: and yet no man shal bye you.

¹⁰ And she gaue the kynge an hundred and .xx. talentes of gould, and of swete odours excedinge moche, & precyouse stones There came neuer after such aboundaunce of swete odours as the quene of Saba gaue to kyng Salomon.

¹⁵ besydes that he had of chapmen and of merchauntes of Potycaries, and of all the kynges of Arabie and of the Lordes of the countreye.

²⁵ And brought hym euery man hys present vesselles of syluer and goulde, and of rayment, harnesse, swete odoures, horsses and Mules, yeare by yeare.

⁹ And she gaue the kyng an hundred & .xx. talentes of goulde, and of swete odoures excedynge great aboundaunce wyth preciouse stones, that there was no suche swete odoures as the quene of Saba gaue kynge Salomon.

⁴ But some sayde: let vs borowe money of the kynges trybute for oure landes and vyneyardes. ⁵ Now are oure brethrens bodyes as oure owne bodyes and their children as oure chyldren: els shoulde we subdue oure sonnes and doughters vnto bondage, & some of oure doughters are subdued already, and no strength is there in oure handes, and other men shall haue oure landes and vyneyardes.

⁸ and sayde vnto them: we (after oure abilyte) haue bought oure brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heythen. And wyll ye sell youre brethren, whom we haue boughte vnto vs? Then helde they theyr peace, and coulde fynde nothynge to aunswere.

¹⁷ My bed haue I made to smell of myrre, Aloes, and Cynamon.

³ & that because of the good & pleasaunt sauoure. Thy name is a swete smelling oyntment, therfore do the maydens laue the:

¹³ The frutes that sprute in the, are like a very Paradyse of pomegranates with swete frutes: ¹⁴ as Cypresse, Nardus, Saffron, Calmus, and all the trees of Libanus: Myrre, Aloes, and all the best spyces.

¹ Thus sayeth the Lorde: Where is the byll of your mothers deuorcement, that I sente vnto her or who is the vsurer, to whome I solde you? Beholde, for youre owne offences are ye solde: & because of youre transgression, is youre mother forsaken.

¹³ Iauan, Tubal, & Mesech were thy marchauntes which brought the men, & ornamentes of metal for thy occupying.

⁶ Thus sayth the Lorde: For thre and foure wickednesses of Israel, I wyl not spare hym: because he hath solde the ryghteous for money, and the poore for shues.

⁶ ye that drincke wyne oute of goblettes, and annoynte youre selues with the best oyle, but no man is sorye for Iosephs hurte.

⁶ We shal set vp false waightes that we maye gett the poore vnder vs wyth their money, and the nedy also for shues: yee let vs sell the chaffe for corne.

³ Then toke Mary a pounde of oyntment called Nardus, perfecte and precyous, and annoynted Iesus fete, and wepte hys fete with her heare, and the house was fylled wyth the sauoure of the oyntmente. ⁴ Then sayed one of hys disciples named Iudas Iscarioth Simons sonne. whiche afterwarde betrayed him: ⁵ why was not thys oyntment solde for thre .C. pens and geuen to the poore? ⁶ Thys sayed he, not that he cared for the poore, but because he was a thiefe, and kepte the bagge, and bare that whiche was geuen. ⁷ Then sayed Iesus Let her alone, agaynste the daye of my buriynge the kept it. ⁸ The poore alwayes shall ye haue with you, but me shall ye not alwayes haue.

¹⁰ & whor mongers: to them that defyle them selues wyth mankynde: to menstealers, to lyars & to periured, and so forth yf there be any other thynge that is contrarye to holsome doctrine

⁴ And the rascall people that was amonge them fell a lustynge. And the chyldren of Israel also went to and wepte and sayde: who shal geue vs flesh to eate?

³⁴ And they called the name of the place kibrath hathauah: because thei buried the people that lusted there.

¹⁸ They tempted God in their hertes, and requyred meate for their lust.

¹⁴ A lust came vpon them in the wildernesse, so that they tempted God in the deserte.

²⁰ But God sayed vnto hym: Thou fole, thys nyghte wyll they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall these thinges be which thou haste prouyded?

²⁵ But Abraham sayd vnto hym. Sonne, remembre that thou in thy lyfe tyme, receyuedest thy pleasure, and contrarywyse Lazarus payne. Nowe therfore is he conforted, and thou arte punyshed.

⁶ These are ensamples to vs that we should not luste after euyll thinges, as they lusted.

² Ye luste & haue not. Ye enuye and haue dignacyon, and cannot obtayne. Ye fyght and war and haue not, because ye axe not.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world (as the luste of the fleshe, the lust of the eyes, and the pryde of goodes) is not of the father, but of the world. ¹⁷ And the world vanysheth away, and the lust therof, but he that fulfilleth the will of God, abideth euer.

²³ And they turned their faces & sayde vnto Micah, what ayleth the, that thou makeste an outcrye: ²⁴ And he sayde, ye haue taken away my Goddes which I made and also the priest, and go youre wayes with them: And what haue I more, how then saye ye vnto me, what ayleth the?

³¹ They shall shaue them selues, and put sacke clothe vpon them for thy sake. They shal mourne for the with hertfull sorowe,

They shal cal the husband man to lamentacyon, and suche as can mourne to mournynge. ¹⁷ In all vyneiardes there shall be heuynesse, for I wil come among you, sayeth the Lorde.

⁵ which shalbe slaine of those that possesse them: yet they take it for no sinne, but they that sell them, say: The Lorde be thancked, I am rich: yea, their owne sheperdes spare them not.

¹⁷ And he taught saying vnto them: is it not wryten: my house shall be called the house of prayer vnto al nacions? But ye haue made it a den of theues.

¹⁹ And when her maister and maysters saw, that the hope of theyr gaynes was gone, they caughte Paule and Sylas, and drue them into the market place vnto the rulars,

²⁴ For a certain man named Demetrius, a siluersmith, whiche made siluer shrynes for Diana, was not a litel beneficial vnto the craftes men. ²⁵ Whiche he called together with the workemen of like occupacion, & sayde: Syrs: ye knowe that by thys crafte we haue vauntage. ²⁶ Moreouer ye se & heare that not alone at Ephesus, but almoste thorough out al Asia, this Paule hath persuaded and turned away muche people: saying that they be not Goddes, whiche are made wyth handes. ²⁷ So that not onelye thys our craft cometh into pacel to be set at nought: but also that the temple of the great Goddas Diana shoulde be despised, and her magnificence should be destroied, which al Asia, and the world worshyppeth.

¹⁰ & shal stand a farre of, for feare of her punishmente, saying: Alas, Alas, that great citie Babilon, that myghty cytie. For at one houre is her iudgemente come. ¹¹ And the marchauntes of the earth, shal wepe and wayle in them selues, for no man wil bye their ware anye more,

¹⁹ There was a certayne ryche man, whiche was clothed in purple and fyne bysse, & fared delyciously euery daye, ²⁰ And there was a certayne begger named Lazarus, whiche laye at hys gate full of sores, ²¹ desierynge to be refresshed with the cromes which fell from the riche mans bourde. Neuerthelesse the dogges came and lycked hys sores. ²² And it fortuned that the begger dyed, and was caryed by the Angels into Abrahams bosome. The ryche man also dyed and was buryed. ²³ And beynge in hell in tormentes, he lyfte vp hys eyes, and sawe Abraham a farre of, & Lazarus in his bosome, ²⁴ and he cryed & sayed: father Abraham haue mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he maye dyppe the typpe of his fynger in water, and cole my tonge, for I am tormented in this flamme. ²⁵ But Abraham sayd vnto hym. Sonne, remembre that thou in thy lyfe tyme, receyuedest thy pleasure, and contrarywyse Lazarus payne. Nowe therfore is he conforted, and thou arte punyshed. ²⁶ Beyonde all thys, betwene you and vs there is a great space set, so that they whiche would go from hence to you can not, neyther maye come from thence to vs. ²⁷ Then he sayed: I praye the therfore father, sende hym to my fathers house. ²⁸ For I haue fyue brethren, for to warne them lest they also come into thys place of tormente. ²⁹ Abraham said vnto hym: they haue Moyses and the Prophetes: let them heare them. ³⁰ And he sayd: nay father Abraham, but yf one came vnto them from the dead, they woulde repent. ³¹ He sayed vnto hym: yf they heare not Moyses, and the Prophetes, neyther wyll they beleue, though one rose from death agayne.

¹⁴ And therfore mourne (ye shippes of the sea) for youre power shalbe throwne doune.

⁹ And yet both these thinges shall come to the vpon one daye in the twyncklyng of an eye: Namely wyddowhead, & desolacyon. They shall mightely fall vpon the, for the multitude of thy witches, & for the greate heape of thy coniurers.

⁶ Dau. The synne of the daughter of my people is be come greater then the wyckednesse of Sodome, that sodenly was destroyed, & not taken with handes.

⁶ So the master of the shyppe came to hym and sayde vnto hym: why slomberest thou? Vp, call vpon thy God: yf God (happely) wil thyncke vpon vs, that we peryshe not.

⁸ Who hath deuysed suche thinges vpon Tirus the croune of al cities, whose marchauntes and captaines were the highest & principal of the world? ⁹ Euen the Lord of Hostes hath deuysed it, that he may put doune al pompe, & minish al the glory of the worlde.

³⁰ They shal lyft vp their voice because of the, and make a lamentable crye. They shall cast dust vpon their heades, & lye doune in the ashes. ³¹ They shall shaue them selues, and put sacke clothe vpon them for thy sake. They shal mourne for the with hertfull sorowe, ³² and heauy lamentacion, yea their children also shal wepe for the. Alas, what cytye hath so bene destroyed in the sea, as Tyre is?

⁴ & they worshipped the dragon, which gaue power vnto the beaste, and they worshipped the beast saiynge: who is lyke vnto the beast? who is able to warre with him?

⁶ And Iosua rent hys clothes, and fell to the earth vpon hys face before the arcke of the Lorde vntyll the euen tyde, bothe he and the elders of Israel, and put earth vpon their heades.

¹² And there ran a man of Beniamin out of the araye & came to Siloh the same day with his clothes rent & earthe vpon his head.

¹⁹ And Thamar put asshes on her head and rent her gaye kyrtell that was on her, & put her hande on her head & so went, & as she wente, cryed.

¹ In the foure & twentye daye of thys moneth came the children of Israell together wyth fastynge sack clothes, and earthe vpon them,

¹² So when they lyfte vp theyr eyes a farre of, they knewe hym not. Then they cryed, and wepte: then euerye one of them rente hys clothes, and sprynckled dust vpon theyr heades in the ayre.

³⁰ They shal lyft vp their voice because of the, and make a lamentable crye. They shall cast dust vpon their heades, & lye doune in the ashes.

⁴² I wyl make myne arowes dronken with bloud, and my swerde shal eate fleshe of the bloude of the slayne & of the captyue and of the bare head of the enemy.

³¹ So perysh all thyne enemyes Lord: but they that loue the, let them be as the sunne rysyng in his might. And the lande had reste fourthye yeares.

⁴⁷ Euen the God which seyth that I be auenged, and subdueth the people vnto me.

¹¹ Oh let the mount Sion reioyse, and the daughters of Iuda be glad because of iudgementes.

¹ O Lorde God, to whome vengeaunce belongeth: thou God to whome vengeaunce belongeth shewe thy self.

¹¹ Let the heauens reioyse, and let the earth be glad: let the sea make a noyse, yea, and all that therin is. ¹² Let the felde be ioyfull and all that is in it, lette all the trees of the woode leape for ioye. ¹³ Before the lorde, for he commeth: for he commeth to iudge the earth: yea, with ryghteousnesse shall he iudge the worlde, and the people with his trueth.

⁴² The righteous will considre this & reioyse, the mouth of all wyckednesse shalbe stopped.

²⁸ Though they curse, yet blesse thou: and let them be confounded, that ryse vp agaynst me, but let thy seruaunt reioyse.

¹⁰ When it goeth well with the righteous, the cytye is mery: and when the vngodly perish, there is gladnesse.

²¹ For beholde, the Lorde wyl go out of his habitacyon, and vpset the wyckednesse of them that dwell vpon earthe. He wyl dyscouer the bloud that she hath deuoured, she shal neuer hyde them, that she hath murthered.

²³ Be glad ye heauens, whom the Lorde hath made, let al that is here beneth vpon the earth, be ioyfull. Reioyse ye mountaynes & woddes, with all the trees that are in you: for the Lord shall redeme Iacob, & shewe his glory vpon Israel.

¹³ Reioyse ye heauens, and synge prayses thou earthe: Talke of ioye ye hylles, for God wyll comforte hys people, and haue mercye vpon hys, that be in trouble.

⁴⁷ And lo, the tyme commeth that I wyll vyset the ymages of Babylon, and the whole lande shalde confounded, yee and her slayne shall lye in the myddest of her. ⁴⁸ Heauen and earth with all that is therin, shall reioyce ouer Babylon, when the destroyers shall come vpon her from the North, sayeth the Lorde.

⁴⁹ Therfore sayde the wysdome of God: I wyll send them Prophetes and Apostles, and of them they shall slea and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the bloude of all Prophetes which was shede from the beginnynge of the worlde, maye be requyred of thys generacion

⁷ And shall not God aduenge his electe, which crye daye and nyghte vnto hym, ye though he defarre them? ⁸ I tell you, he wil auenge them, and that quickly. Neuerthelesse when the sonne of man commeth, suppose ye, that he shall fynde fayth on earth?

²⁰ and are buylt vpon the foundation of the Apostles & Prophetes, Iesus Christe beynge the head corner stone,

⁵ Which mysterye in tymes passed was not opened to the sonnes of men, as it is now declared vnto his holye Apostles and Prophetes by the spyrite

¹¹ And the very same made some Apostles, some Prophetes, some Euangelistes, some sheperdes, some teachers,

² the wordes, which were tolde before of the holy prophetes, and also the commaundementes of vs the apostles of the Lorde and sauiour.

¹⁷ But ye beloued, remembre the wordes whiche were spoken before of the Apostles of oure Lord Iesu Christe,

¹⁰ and they cryed wyth a loude voyce sayinge: Howe longe tariest thou Lord holy and true, to iudge and to auenge oure bloud on them that dwell on the earth?

¹² Therfore reioyse heauens, and ye that dwell in them, Wo to the inhabiters of the earth, & of the sea, for the deuyll is come doune vnto you, which hath great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a shorte tyme.

¹ And after that, I heard the voice of much people in heauen saying Alleluia. Saluacion and glory and honoure, & power be ascribed to the Lorde oure God, ² for true and ryghteous are his iudgementes, for he hath iudged that great whore, whiche dyd corrupte the earth with her fornicacion, & hath auenged the bloude of his seruauntes of her hand. ³ And again they said: Alleluia. And smoke rose vp for euermore.

⁵ the depe waters haue couered them: they soncke to the botome as a stone.

¹¹ And the reed sea dyddest thou deuyde in sunder before them, so that they wente thorowe the myddes of the sea drye shoed: and theyr persecuters threwest thou into the depe as a stone, in the myghtye waters,

⁸ He vanysheth as a dreame, so that he can no more be founde, & passeth awaye as a visyon in the nyght.

³⁶ but when I went by, lo, he was gone: I sought hym, but he coulde no where be founde.

²¹ I wil make an ende of the, and thou shalt be gone. Thoughe thou be sought for, yet shalte thou not be founde for euermore, sayeth the Lorde God.

¹⁹ Thus shall he tourne agayne to hys owne lande, stomble, & fall, and be no more founde:

⁸ and preuayled not, neyther was theyr place found any more in heauen.

²⁰ Euery Ile fleed away, & the mountaines were not founde.

²² And the voice of harpers, & musicions, and of pipers, & trompeters, shalbe hearde no more in the, and no craftes man, of whatsoeuer crafte he be, shalbe founde any more in the, & the sound of a myl, shalbe hard no more in the,

¹¹ And I sawe a great whyte seate and hym that sate on it, from whose face fled away bothe the earthe & heauen, & theyr place was no more founde.

⁴ when the dores in the stretes shalbe shut, & when the voyce of the myller shalbe layed doune: when men shall ryse vp at the voyce of the byrde, and when all the daughters of musicke shalbe brought lowe:

⁸ The myrth of tabrettes shalbe layde doune, the chere of the ioyfull shall cease & the pleasure of lutes shal haue an ende ⁹ there shal no more wyne be droncke wyth myrth, the beere shalbe bytter to them that dryncke it,

³⁴ And as for the voyce of myrth and gladnesse of the cytyes of Iuda, and Ierusalem the voyce of the brydegrome & of the bryde: I wil make them ceasse, for the lande shall be desolate.

⁹ For thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes the God of Israell: Beholde, I shall take awaye out of this place, the voyce of myrth and gladnesse, the voyce of the brydegrome and of the bryde: yee & that in youre dayes, that ye maye se it.

¹⁰ Moreouer, I will take from them the voyce of gladnesse and solace, the voyce of the brydegrom & the bryde, the voyce of the anoynted, wyth the cresshettes:

¹¹ Shall the voice of gladnesse be hearde agayne, the voyce of the Brydegrome and of the bryde, the voyce of them that shall synge: Prayse the Lorde of Hostes, for he is louinge and his mercy endureth for euer, and the voyce of them that shall offer vp gyftes in the house of the Lorde. For I will restore the captiuite of this lande, as it was afore, saieth the Lord.

¹³ Thus will I bring the melody of thy songes, and the voyce of thy minstrelsy to an ende, so that they shall no more be hearde.

²² And when Iehoram sawe Iehu, he sayde: is it peace Iehu? And he sayde, what peace shulde there be, so longe as the whoredomes of thy mother Iezabel, and her witchcraftes are so great?

¹⁷ How oft shall the candle of the wicked be put oute? howe oft commeth their destruccyon vpon them? O what sorow shal god geue them for their part in his wrath?

¹⁸ The path of the ryghtuous shyneth as the lyghte, and is euer brighter and brighter vnto the perfecte daye. ¹⁹ But the waye of the vngodly is as the darcknes, wherin men fal, or thei be aware.

²⁰ And why? the wycked hath nothyng to hope for, and the candle of the vngodly shal be put oute.

³³ When thy wares & marchaundies came from the seas, thou gauest al people ynoughe. The kinges of the earth hast thou made ryche, thorowe the multytude of thy wares and occupyinge. ³⁴ But thou art nowe caste doune into the depe of the sea, al thy resorte of people is perished with the.

⁴ And that for the greate and manyfolde whordome, of the fayre and beutyfull harlot, which is a maistresse of witchcrafte, yea, and selleth the people thorowe her whordom, and the nacyons thorowe her witchcraft.

¹¹ And hym they set much by: because that of long tyme he had mocked them with sorcery.

⁹ And the great dragon, that olde serpente called the deuyll and Sathanas was caste out. Whiche deceyueth al the worlde. And he was cast into the earth, and his angelles were cast out also.

¹³ And he dyd greate wonders, so that he made fyre come doune from heauen in the syght of men. ¹⁴ And deceiued them that dwelt on the earth by the meanes of those sygnes, which he had power to do in the syght of the beaste, saying to them that dwelt on the earth, that they should make an ymage vnto the beaste, whyche had the wounde of a swearde, and dyd lyue. ¹⁵ And he had power to geue a spyryte vnto the ymage of the beaste, and that the ymage of the beast should speake, and shoulde cause that as manye as would not worshyppe the ymage of the beaste, shoulde be kylled. ¹⁶ And he made al both smale and greate, ryche and poore, free and bonde, to receyue a marke in theyr ryght handes, or in theyr forheades.

¹¹ And the marchauntes of the earth, shal wepe and wayle in them selues, for no man wil bye their ware anye more, ¹² the ware of gold, & syluer, & precious stones, neither of pearle, sylke, and raynes, & purple, & skarled, and al thin wode, & all maner vessels of iuory, & al maner vessels of most precious wode, and of brasse, and of Iron, ¹³ & sinamome, and odoures, and oyntmentes, & frankinsence, and wine, and oyle, and fine floure, and wheat, beastes, and shepe, and horsses, & charrettes, and bodyes, and soules of men. ¹⁴ And the apples that thy soule lusted after are departed from the. And al thinges which were deyntye, & had in price are departed from the, & thou shalt finde them no more. ¹⁵ The marchauntes of these thinges, which were wexed riche shal stand a farre of from her, for feare of the punishement of her, weping & waylynge, ¹⁶ & saying: alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in raines, & purple, and scarlet, & decked wt gold, & precious stones, & pearles, ¹⁷ for at one hour so great riches is come to nought. And euery shyp gouerner, & al they that occupied shippes, & shipmen which worke in the sea, stode a farre of ¹⁸ & cried, when they saw the smoke of her burninge, sayinge: what citie is lyke vnto this great citie? ¹⁹ And they cast duste on their heades, & cried weping, & wailing, & said: Alas, alas the greate citye wherin were made riche al that had shippes in the sea, by the reason of her costlines, for at one houre is she made desolate.

⁸ But the fearful and vnbeleuing, & the abhominable, & murtherers, & whoremongers, & sorcerers, & ydolaters, & al lyars shall haue their parte in the lake which burneth wt fyre & brymstone, which is the seconde death.

⁵ And there shalbe no nyght there, and they nede no candel neyther lyghte of the sunne: for the Lorde geueth them lyghte, & they shall rayne for euermore.

¹⁵ For without shal be dogges & inchaunters, & whoremongers, and murtherers & Idolaters and whosoeuer loueth or maketh leasynges.

³⁴ Vpon thy wynges is founde the bloude of poore and innocent people, and that not in corners and holes onlye, but openly in all these places.

⁹ Murtherers are there in the, that shede bloude, & eate vpon the hylles, and in the they vse vnhappynesse.

¹² yea gyftes haue bene receyued in the, to shede bloude. Thou haste taken vsury and encreace, thou haste oppressed thy neyghbours by extorcion, and forgotten me, sayeth the Lorde God.

²⁷ Thy rulers in the ate like rauishing wolues, to shed bloude, and to destroye soules, for their owne couetous lucre.

²¹ I behelde, and the same horne made battaile againste the saintes, yea and gat the victorie of them,

²⁷ Wo be to you Scribes and Phariseis hypocrytes, for ye are lyke vnto paynted tombes, whiche appeare beautifull outwarde, but are within full of dead bones and of all filthines.

³⁵ that vpon you may come all the ryghtuous bloude that was shede vpon the earth, from the bloude of ryghtuous Abel, vnto the bloude of Zacharias the sonne of Barachias, whom ye slewe betwene the tempel and the aulter.

⁴⁷ Wo be to you: ye buylde the sepulchres of of the Prophetes, and youre fathers kylled them, ⁴⁸ truelye ye beare witnes, that ye alowe the deedes of youre fathers: for they kylled them, and ye buylde theyr sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therfore sayde the wysdome of God: I wyll send them Prophetes and Apostles, and of them they shall slea and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the bloude of all Prophetes which was shede from the beginnynge of the worlde, maye be requyred of thys generacion ⁵¹ from the bloude of Abell vnto the bloude of Zacharye, whiche peryshed betwene the aulter and the temple. Verelye I saye vnto you, it shalbe requyred of thys nacyon.

⁵² Whyche of the prophetes haue not your fathers persecuted? And they haue slayne them, which shewed before of the comminge of the iuste whom ye haue nowe betrayed and mordred.

¹⁵ Which as they kylled the Lorde Iesus and theyr owne prophetes, euen so haue they persecuted vs, and God they please not, and are contrarye to all men,

⁷ And when they haue fynished theyr testymonye, the beast that came out of the bottomlesse pyt, shal make warre agaynst them, and shal ouercome them, and kyl them.

⁶ for they shed out the bloud of sainctes, & prophetes, & therfore hast thou geuen them bloud to drinke, for they are worthy.

⁶ And I saw the wyfe drounken with the bloude of Saynctes, and with the bloud of the wytnesses of Iesu. And when I saw her, I wondred wyth great maruayle.

² for true and ryghteous are his iudgementes, for he hath iudged that great whore, whiche dyd corrupte the earth with her fornicacion, & hath auenged the bloude of his seruauntes of her hand.
