³ This is how we may be sure we know him, by obeying his commands.

⁴⁶ Why call me, 'Lord, Lord!' and obey me not?

¹⁵ If you love me you will keep my commands,

²¹ He who possesses my commands and obeys them is he who loves me, and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and appear to him." ²² "Lord," said Judas (not Judas Iscariot), "why is it that you are to appear to us, and not to the world?" ²³ Jesus answered, "If anyone loves me he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up our abode with him. ²⁴ He who does not love me does not obey my word; and what you hear me say is not my word but the word of the Father who sent me.

¹⁰ If you keep my commands you will remain within my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain within his love.

¹⁴ You are my friends — if you do what I command you;

³ And this is eternal life, that they know thee, the only real God, and him whom thou hast sent, even Jesus Christ.

⁶ For God who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," has shone within my heart to illuminate men with the knowledge of God's glory in the face of Christ.

¹ Finally, brothers, we beg and beseech you in the Lord Jesus to follow our instructions about the way you are to live so as to satisfy God; you are leading that life, but you are to excel in it still further. ² You remember the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus.

⁹ and by being thus perfected he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,

⁴ He who says, 'I know him,' but does not obey his commands, is a liar and the truth is not in him; ⁵ but whoever obeys his word, in him love to God is really complete. This is how we may be sure we are in him: ⁶ he who says he 'remains in him' ought to live as he lived.

¹⁴ We know we have crossed from death to life, because we love the brotherhood; he who has no love [for his brother] remains in death.

¹⁹ Thus it is that we may be sure we belong to the truth and reassure ourselves

²² and we get from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commands and do what is pleasing in his sight. ²³ Now this is what he commands, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as he has commanded us to do; ²⁴ he who obeys his commands remains within him — and He remains within him. And this is how we may be sure he remains within us, by means of the Spirit he has given us.

¹³ This is how we may be sure we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us a share in his own Spirit;

³ (for love to God means keeping his commands). And his commands are not irksome,

¹⁹ We know that we belong to God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil One.

¹⁴ Blessed are those who wash their robes, that theirs may be the right to the tree of Life, the right to enter the gates of the City!
