⁵ David said, "Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries. I will therefore make preparation for it." So David prepared abundantly before his death.

² He said to them, "I am one hundred twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: and the LORD has said to me, 'You shall not go over this Jordan.' ³ The LORD your God, he will go over before you; he will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua shall go over before you, as the LORD has spoken. ⁴ The LORD will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land; whom he destroyed. ⁵ The LORD will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandment which I have commanded you. ⁶ Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, nor be scared of them: for the LORD your God is he who is going with you; he will not leave you nor forsake you." ⁷ Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous: for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it.

⁷ Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.

⁸ And this house, which is exalted, will become a heap of ruins. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and will whistle, and they will say, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land, and to this house?'

¹ David the king said to all the assembly, "Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great; for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

⁵ "The house which I build is great; for our God is great above all gods.

²¹ And this house, which is exalted, will become a heap of ruins. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and will say, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land, and to this house?'

⁷ There were gathered to him worthless men, base fellows, who strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

¹² But many of the priests and Levites and heads of ancestral houses, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice. Many also shouted aloud for joy,

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

¹¹ Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised you, is burned with fire; and all our pleasant places are laid waste.

²⁰ As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty; but they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things. Therefore I will render it an unclean thing to them.

³ 'Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn't it in your eyes as nothing?

⁹ 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts; 'and in this place will I give peace,' says the LORD of hosts."

⁵ As some were talking about the temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts, he said,

³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease.

³⁷ For in this the saying is true, 'One sows, and another reaps.' ³⁸ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."

⁴ We must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.

¹ Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

¹³ I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you; ¹⁴ knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. ¹⁵ Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.
