¹ Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. ² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. ³ For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down; and he reared up altars for the Baals, and made Asheroth, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them. ⁴ He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "My name shall be in Jerusalem forever." ⁵ He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. ⁶ He also made his children to pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom; and he practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ He set the engraved image of the idol, which he had made, in God's house, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name forever: ⁸ neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from off the land which I have appointed for your fathers, if only they will observe to do all that I have commanded them, even all the law and the statutes and the ordinances given by Moses." ⁹ Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that they did more evil than the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel did. ¹⁰ The LORD spoke to Manasseh, and to his people; but they gave no heed. ¹¹ Therefore the LORD brought on them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh in chains, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. ¹² When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his petition, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God. ¹⁴ Now after this he built an outer wall to the City of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance at the Fish Gate; and he encircled Ophel with it, and raised it up to a very great height: and he put valiant captains in all the fortified cities of Judah. ¹⁵ He took away the foreign gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mountain of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city. ¹⁶ He built up the altar of the LORD, and offered thereon sacrifices of peace offerings and of thanksgiving, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD, the God of Israel. ¹⁷ Nevertheless the people sacrificed still in the high places, but only to the LORD their God. ¹⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, look, they are written among the acts of the kings of Israel. ¹⁹ His prayer also, and how God was entreated of him, and all his sin and his trespass, and the places in which he built high places, and set up the Asherim and the engraved images, before he humbled himself, look, they are written in the Record of the Seers. ²⁰ So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the garden of his own house. And Amon his son reigned in his place. ²¹ Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. ²² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father; and Amon sacrificed to all the engraved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them. ²³ He did not humble himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but this same Amon trespassed more and more. ²⁴ His servants conspired against him, and put him to death in his own house. ²⁵ But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

¹ Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Hephzibah. ² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. ³ For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as did Ahab king of Israel, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them. ⁴ He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "I will put my name in Jerusalem." ⁵ He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. ⁶ He made his son to pass through the fire, and practiced sorcery, and practiced divination, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ He set the engraved image of Asherah, that he had made, in the house of which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name forever; ⁸ neither will I cause the feet of Israel to wander any more out of the land which I gave their fathers, if only they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them." ⁹ But they did not listen: and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than the nations did whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel. ¹⁰ The LORD spoke by his servants the prophets, saying, ¹¹ "Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations, and has done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, who were before him, and has made Judah also to sin with his idols; ¹² therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Look, I bring such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears shall tingle. ¹³ I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab; and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. ¹⁴ I will cast off the remnant of my inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies. They will become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies; ¹⁵ because they have done that which is evil in my sight, and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even to this day.'" ¹⁶ Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, until he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; besides his sin with which he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. ¹⁷ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he sinned, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ¹⁸ Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his place.

¹³ Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,

³³ Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

¹ Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. ² He did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

¹⁶ Woe to you, land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in the morning.

⁴ And I will make youths to be their leaders, and capricious children shall rule over them.

¹² As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

¹⁰ and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah,

²⁴ "'Do not defile yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled. ²⁵ The land was defiled: therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants. ²⁶ You therefore shall keep my statutes and my ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the native-born, nor the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you; ²⁷ (for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land became defiled); ²⁸ that the land not vomit you out also, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. ²⁹ "'For whoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. ³⁰ Therefore you shall keep my requirements, that you do not practice any of these abominable customs, which were practiced before you, and that you do not defile yourselves with them: I am the LORD your God.'"

²² "'You shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my ordinances, and do them; that the land, where I am bringing you to dwell, may not vomit you out. ²³ You shall not walk in the customs of the nation, which I am casting out before you: for they did all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

³¹ You shall not do so to the LORD your God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hates, have they done to their gods; for even their sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their gods.

⁹ When you have come into the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

¹⁴ For these nations, that you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice sorcery, and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you so to do.

¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the nations whom the LORD carried away before them; and they worked wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger;

¹⁵ They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the LORD had commanded them that they should not do like them.

² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

⁹ But they did not listen: and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than the nations did whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

³ Moreover he burnt incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, and made his sons pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the LORD which he had made holy in Jerusalem.

¹⁴ shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn't you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

³⁵ but mixed themselves with the nations, and learned their works. ³⁶ They served their idols, which became a snare to them. ³⁷ Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. ³⁸ They shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan. The land was polluted with blood. ³⁹ Thus were they defiled with their works, and prostituted themselves in their deeds. ⁴⁰ Therefore the LORD burned with anger against his people. He abhorred his inheritance.

⁴ I will cause them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

¹² and you shall know that I am the LORD: for you have not walked in my statutes, neither have you executed my ordinances, but have done after the ordinances of the nations that are around you.'"

¹⁹ and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky.

²¹ You shall not plant for yourselves an Asherah of any kind of tree beside the altar of the LORD your God, which you shall make for yourselves.

³ and has gone and served other gods, and worshiped them, or the sun, or the moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

¹¹ The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals; ¹² and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them: and they provoked the LORD to anger. ¹³ They forsook the LORD, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

²³ For they also built them high places, and pillars, and Asherim, on every high hill, and under every green tree;

⁴ He removed the high places, and broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah: and he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for in those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.

³ For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as did Ahab king of Israel, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them.

⁵ He put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places around Jerusalem; those also who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven. ⁶ He brought out the Asherah from the house of the LORD, outside of Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and beat it to dust, and cast its dust on the graves of the common people.

¹¹ He took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entrance of the house of the LORD, by the room of Nathan Melech the officer, who was in the court; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

² but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for the Baals. ³ Moreover he burnt incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, and made his sons pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. ⁴ He sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

¹⁴ They arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast them into the brook Kidron.

¹ Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah, and broke in pieces the pillars, and cut down the Asherim, and broke down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

¹² Hasn't the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense?'

¹⁹ Who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all of my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.

² and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and which they have worshiped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried, they shall be for dung on the surface of the earth.

² while their children remember their altars and their Asherim by the green trees on the high hills.

¹³ and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings to other gods."'"

⁵ those who worship the host of heaven on the housetops, those who worship and swear by the LORD and also swear by Milcom,

⁴² But God turned, and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets, 'Did you offer to me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

¹¹ then it shall happen that to the place which the LORD your God shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the wave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which you vow to your God.

²⁹ that your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which you have said, 'My name shall be there;' to listen to the prayer which your servant shall pray toward this place.

³ And the LORD said to him, "I have heard your prayer and your petition that you have made before me. I have done for you according to all your prayer. I have consecrated this house which you have built, to place my name there forever, and my eyes and my heart will be there perpetually.

⁴ He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "I will put my name in Jerusalem." ⁵ He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

⁶ but I chose Jerusalem, that my name may be there; and I chose David to be over my people Israel.'

¹⁶ For now have I chosen and made this house holy, that my name may be there forever; and my eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.

¹⁹ They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.

¹⁵ He took away the foreign gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mountain of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.

³ For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherim, and the engraved images, and the molten images. ⁴ They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the incense altars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherim, and the engraved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

³⁰ "For the people of Judah have done that which is evil in my sight," says the LORD: "they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.

⁹ Furthermore he made the court of the priests, and the great court, and doors for the court, and overlaid their doors with bronze.

³⁴ But they set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it. ³⁵ They built the high places of Baal, which are in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through fire to Moloch; which I did not command them, neither did it come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.'

⁷ He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, look, a hole in the wall. ⁸ Then he said to me, "Son of man, dig now in the wall": and when I had dug in the wall, look, a door. ⁹ He said to me, "Go in, and see the wicked abominations that they do here." ¹⁰ So I went in and saw; and see, every form of crawling creatures, and abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed around on the wall. ¹¹ There stood before them seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel; and in their midst stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, every man with his censer in his hand; and the odor of the cloud of incense went up. ¹² Then he said to me, "Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his rooms of imagery? For they say, 'The LORD doesn't see us. The LORD has forsaken the land.'" ¹³ He said also to me, "You shall again see yet other great abominations which they do." ¹⁴ Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD's house which was toward the north; and see, there sat the women weeping for Tammuz. ¹⁵ Then he said to me, "Have you seen this, son of man? You shall again see yet greater abominations than these." ¹⁶ He brought me into the inner court of the LORD's house; and see, at the door of the LORD's temple, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs toward the LORD's temple, and their faces toward the east; and they were worshipping the sun toward the east. ¹⁷ Then he said to me, "Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? For they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger: and look, they put the branch to their nose. ¹⁸ therefore I will also deal in wrath; my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them."

²¹ "'You shall not give any of your children to sacrifice to Moloch; neither shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

²⁶ "'You shall not eat any meat with the blood still in it; neither shall you practice divination, nor practice sorcery.

³¹ "'Do not turn to spirits of the dead, and do not inquire of familiar spirits, to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.

² "Moreover, you shall tell the children of Israel, 'Anyone of the children of Israel, or of the foreigners who sojourn in Israel, who gives any of his offspring to Moloch; he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.

⁶ "'The person that turns to spirits of the dead, and to familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will even set my face against that person, and will cut him off from among his people.

²⁷ "'A man or a woman that is a medium, or is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones; their blood shall be upon them.'"

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who practices divination, or tells fortunes, or interprets omens, or a sorcerer, ¹¹ or who casts spells, or consults a medium or a familiar spirit, or inquires of the dead. ¹² For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out from before you. ¹³ You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. ¹⁴ For these nations, that you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice sorcery, and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you so to do.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king."

¹⁷ They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, practiced divination and sorcery, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

¹⁰ He defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Moloch.

²⁴ Moreover Josiah removed the mediums, and spiritists, and the teraphim, and the idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the scroll that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.

¹³ So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD, which he did not keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire thereby,

¹⁹ When they tell you, "Consult with the spirits of the dead and familiar spirits who chirp and who mutter. Shouldn't a people consult with their gods, by consulting the dead on behalf of the living?"

³ The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst. I will destroy its counsel. They will seek the idols, spirits of the dead, mediums, and spiritists.

⁹ but these two things shall come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood; in their full measure shall they come on you, in spite of your many sorceries and the potency of your spells. ¹⁰ For you have trusted in your wickedness; you have said, No one sees me; your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you, and you have said in your heart, 'I am, and there is no other besides me.' ¹¹ Therefore disaster will come on you; you won't know when it dawns: and calamity will fall on you; you will not be able to put it away: and desolation shall come on you suddenly and unexpectedly. ¹² "Stand now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth; if so be you shall be able to profit, if so be you may prevail.

³¹ They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. ³² Therefore look, the days come," says the LORD, "that it shall no more be called Topheth, nor The Valley of Ben Hinnom, but The Valley of Slaughter: for they shall bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.

³⁷ For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands; and with their idols have they committed adultery; and they have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire to them to be devoured.

³⁹ For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and look, thus have they done in the midst of my house.

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,

⁴⁴ "If your people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatever way you shall send them, and they pray to the LORD toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name;

⁴⁸ if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name:

¹³ However I will not tear away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen."

³² (but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel);

³⁶ Aaron and his sons did all the things which the LORD commanded by Moses.

¹¹ and that you are to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by Moses."

⁴⁰ You shall keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD your God gives you, forever.

¹ Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and observe to do them.

³¹ But as for you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it."

¹ You shall observe to do all the commandment which I command you this day, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to your fathers.

²⁶ 'Cursed is he who doesn't confirm all the words of this law to do them.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.'"

¹⁵ Look, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil. ¹⁶ If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you this day to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his ordinances, then you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land where you are going to possess it. ¹⁷ But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but shall be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; ¹⁸ I declare to you this day that you will certainly perish; you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. ¹⁹ I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse: therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants; ²⁰ to love the LORD your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."

¹⁷ As for you, if you will walk before me as David your father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my statutes and my ordinances; ¹⁸ then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, according as I covenanted with David your father, saying, 'There shall not fail you a man to be ruler in Israel.' ¹⁹ But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; ²⁰ then I will pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have made holy for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. ²¹ And this house, which is exalted, will become a heap of ruins. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and will say, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land, and to this house?' ²² And they shall answer, 'Because they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and took other gods, worshiped them, and served them. Therefore he has brought all these disasters on them.'"

¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; ²⁰ but if you refuse and rebel, the sword shall devour you; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it."

²⁵ Therefore tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood: and shall you possess the land? ²⁶ You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor's wife: and shall you possess the land?"'

⁶ They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

¹⁰ For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them." ¹¹ Now it is evident that no one is justified by the law before God, for, "The righteous will live by faith." ¹² The law is not of faith, but, "The one who does them will live by them." ¹³ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"

²⁴ "'Do not defile yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled.

²¹ a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place;

⁸ I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

¹⁶ He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and with which he has made Israel to sin."

²⁶ He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin with which he made Israel to sin.

⁸ and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they made. ⁹ The children of Israel did secretly things that were not right against the LORD their God: and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city; ¹⁰ and they set them up pillars and Asherim on every high hill, and under every green tree; ¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the nations whom the LORD carried away before them; and they worked wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger;

⁹ But they did not listen: and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than the nations did whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel. ¹⁰ The LORD spoke by his servants the prophets, saying, ¹¹ "Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations, and has done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, who were before him, and has made Judah also to sin with his idols;

¹⁶ Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, until he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; besides his sin with which he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

²⁶ Notwithstanding, the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath, with which his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocation with which Manasseh had provoked him.

³ Surely at the commandment of the LORD this came on Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did, ⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood: and the LORD would not pardon.

² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

¹² If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.

⁴⁵ You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hethite, and your father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters; and your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. ⁴⁷ Yet have you not walked in their ways, nor done after their abominations; but, as if that were a very little thing, you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab; and you walk in their counsels. Therefore I will make you a desolation, and her inhabitants an object of contempt; and you will bear the scorn of the nations."

¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, until there was no remedy.

²⁹ and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly, and did not listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear. ³⁰ Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

⁴ The LORD has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them (but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear) ⁵ saying, 'Return now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even forevermore; ⁶ and do not go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and do not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm. ⁷ Yet you have not listened to me,' says the LORD; 'that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.'

⁴ However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, 'Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate.' ⁵ But they did not listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.

⁴ Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying: Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Return now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings;' but they did not hear, nor listen to me, says the LORD.

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so you do. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

³⁶ The LORD will bring you, and your king whom you shall set over you, to a nation that you have not known, you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.

³³ Pharaoh Necoh put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of one hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

⁶ Then they took the king, and carried him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment on him.

⁶ Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.

³² Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, do not let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our leaders, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.

³⁷ It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

⁸ If they are bound in fetters, and are taken in the cords of afflictions, ⁹ then he shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly. ¹⁰ He also opens their ears to instruction, and commands that they return from iniquity. ¹¹ If they listen and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

¹⁰ Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron, ¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High. ¹² Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was none to help. ¹³ Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. ¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bonds in sunder.

²⁶ He will lift up a banner to the nations from far, and he will whistle for them from the far regions of the earth. Look, they will come speedily and swiftly. ²⁷ None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the belt of their waist be untied, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken: ²⁸ whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent. Their horses' hoofs will be like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind. ²⁹ Their roaring will be like a lioness. They will roar like young lions. Yes, they shall roar, and seize their prey and carry it off, and there will be no one to deliver. ³⁰ They will roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land look, darkness and distress. The light is darkened in its clouds.

¹⁸ It will happen in that day that the LORD will whistle for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹ They shall come, and shall all rest in the desolate valleys, in the clefts of the rocks, on all thorn hedges, and on all pastures. ²⁰ In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard.

⁸ For he says, "Aren't all of my officials kings?

⁹ How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

⁷ He has walled me in, so I can't escape; he has made my chains heavy.

³ Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.

³⁹ Those of you who are left will rot away in their iniquity in the lands of their enemies; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they rot away with them. ⁴⁰ "'If they confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me, and also that, because they walked contrary to me, ⁴¹ I also walked contrary to them, and brought them into the land of their enemies: if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled, and they then accept the punishment of their iniquity; ⁴² then I will remember my covenant with Jacob; and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land.

³⁰ When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to the LORD your God, and listen to his voice: ³¹ for the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

⁵ Therefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they struck him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. He was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with a great slaughter.

²² In the time of his distress, he trespassed yet more against the LORD, this same king Ahaz.

²⁶ Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

¹⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer to his God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, look, they are written among the acts of the kings of Israel. ¹⁹ His prayer also, and how God was entreated of him, and all his sin and his trespass, and the places in which he built high places, and set up the Asherim and the engraved images, before he humbled himself, look, they are written in the Record of the Seers.

²³ He did not humble himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but this same Amon trespassed more and more.

¹⁵ Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.' ²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him," says the LORD.

¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me earnestly."

⁹ The LORD's voice calls to the city, and wisdom sees your name: "Listen to the rod, and he who appointed it.

¹⁶ And he wanted to fill himself with the carob pods that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any. ¹⁷ But when he came to himself he said, 'How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough to spare, and I'm dying here with hunger. ¹⁸ I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." ¹⁵ Now they were also bringing their babies to him, that he might touch them. But when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

¹¹ The Lord said to him, "Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus. For look, he is praying,

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁵ Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, towards one another; for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

⁶ You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink; that you may know that I am the LORD your God.

²⁰ They were helped against them, and the Hagrites were delivered into their hand, and all who were with them; for they cried to God in the battle, and he answered their petition, because they put their trust in him.

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem;

²³ So we fasted and begged our God for this: and he was entreated of us.

²³ If you return to Shaddai, you shall be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents.

²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You shall pay your vows.

¹⁶ Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, ¹⁷ That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. ¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain on his bed, with continual strife in his bones; ²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul choicest food. ²¹ His flesh is so consumed away, that it can't be seen. His bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yes, his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers. ²³ "If there is beside him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man what is right for him; ²⁴ then he is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.' ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's. He returns to the days of his youth. ²⁶ He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness. ²⁷ He sings before men, and says, 'I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me. ²⁸ He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life shall see the light.' ²⁹ "Look, God works all these things, twice, yes three times, with a man, ³⁰ to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

¹⁶ The LORD has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me to my destruction in the heat of summer. Selah. ⁵ I acknowledged my sin to you. I did not hide my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹⁰ "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth."

⁵ For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive; abundant in loving kindness to all those who call on you.

⁷ When a man's ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

¹ The king's heart is in the LORD's hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call you on him while he is near: ⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. ⁸ "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," says the LORD. ⁹ "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

⁷ I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God; for they shall return to me with their whole heart.'

¹² You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. ¹³ You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

²⁵ that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and you shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

³⁴ "At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation. ³⁵ All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing; and he does according to his will in the host of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, "What have you done?"

³³ But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

⁷ "Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. ⁸ For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

⁴² And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom." ⁴³ And he said to him, "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

¹⁰ Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

³ This is everlasting life, that they may know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

¹¹ They will not teach each one his fellow citizen, and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for all will know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.

³³ The king said to them, "Take with you the servants of your lord, and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.

⁴⁵ Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.

¹¹ He fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of food, and oil and wine. ¹² He put shields and spears in every city, and made them exceeding strong. Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.

¹⁹ These were those who waited on the king, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.

³ He built the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD, and he carried out considerable work on the wall of Ophel.

⁵ He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised towers upon it, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo in the City of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

³⁰ This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

³ The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

²⁶ (Now the Nethinim lived in Ophel, to the place over against the Water Gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.) ²⁷ After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

³⁹ and above the Ephraim Gate, and by the Jeshanah Gate, and by the Fish Gate, and the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, and as far as the Sheep Gate. And they stood still in the Gate of the Guard.

¹⁰ In that day, says the LORD, there will be the noise of a cry from the Fish Gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

⁷ He set the engraved image of Asherah, that he had made, in the house of which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name forever;

³ For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down; and he reared up altars for the Baals, and made Asheroth, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them. ⁴ He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "My name shall be in Jerusalem forever." ⁵ He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. ⁶ He also made his children to pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom; and he practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ He set the engraved image of the idol, which he had made, in God's house, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name forever:

¹⁷ The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ¹⁸ The idols shall utterly pass away. ¹⁹ Men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily. ²⁰ In that day, people will cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold to the rodents and to the bats, which have been made for themselves to worship; ²¹ to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

²⁰ The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him. ²¹ "But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²² None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

¹ Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen because of your sin. ² Take words with you, and return to the LORD. Tell him, "Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good, and we will offer the fruit of our lips. ³ Assyria can't save us. We won't ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, 'Our gods.' for in you the fatherless finds mercy."

⁸ Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance,

¹⁹ For I have made myself known to him, so that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, so that God may bring to Abraham that which he has spoken to him."

¹¹ "'This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which one shall offer to the LORD. ¹² If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mixed with oil. ¹³ With cakes of leavened bread he shall offer his offering with the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving. ¹⁴ Of it he shall offer one out of each offering for a heave offering to the LORD. It shall be the priest's who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings. ¹⁵ The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his offering. He shall not leave any of it until the morning. ¹⁶ "'But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow, or a freewill offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice; and on the next day what remains of it shall be eaten: ¹⁷ but what remains of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. ¹⁸ If any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is eaten on the third day, it will not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed to him who offers it. It will be an abomination, and the soul who eats any of it will bear his iniquity.

³⁰ Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me"; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.

⁴ and commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

¹⁸ Then they went in to Hezekiah the king within the palace, and said, "We have cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering, with all its vessels, and the table of show bread, with all its vessels.

¹⁰ The LORD spoke to Manasseh, and to his people; but they gave no heed.

¹² When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his petition, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.

¹⁹ His prayer also, and how God was entreated of him, and all his sin and his trespass, and the places in which he built high places, and set up the Asherim and the engraved images, before he humbled himself, look, they are written in the Record of the Seers.

¹⁰ For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and he has covered your heads (the seers).

¹⁰ who tell the seers, "Do not see for us," and to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits.

¹² Amaziah also said to Amos, "You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

¹² and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God; he did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted, I went astray; but now I observe your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.

⁷⁵ LORD, I know that your judgments are righteous, that in faithfulness you have humbled me.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁰ They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.'

²² You his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

¹⁶ The gift is not as through one who sinned: for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses to justification.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

¹ Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign; and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Hephzibah. ² He did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the nations whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. ³ For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as did Ahab king of Israel, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them. ⁴ He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD said, "I will put my name in Jerusalem." ⁵ He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. ⁶ He made his son to pass through the fire, and practiced sorcery, and practiced divination, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ He set the engraved image of Asherah, that he had made, in the house of which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name forever; ⁸ neither will I cause the feet of Israel to wander any more out of the land which I gave their fathers, if only they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them."

¹³ The carpenter stretches out a line. He marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes. He marks it out with compasses, and shapes it like the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to reside in a house. ¹⁴ He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak, and strengthens for himself one among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir tree, and the rain nourishes it. ¹⁵ Then it will be for a man to burn; and he takes some of it, and warms himself. Yes, he burns it, and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it an engraved image, and falls down to it. ¹⁶ He burns part of it in the fire. With part of it, he eats meat. He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. Yes, he warms himself, and says, "Aha. I am warm. I have seen the fire." ¹⁷ The rest of it he makes into a god, even his engraved image. He bows down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, "Deliver me; for you are my god." ¹⁸ They do not know, neither do they consider: for he has shut their eyes, that they can't see; and their hearts, that they can't understand. ¹⁹ No one thinks, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, "I have burned part of it in the fire. Yes, I have also baked bread on its coals. I have roasted meat and eaten it. Shall I make the rest of it into an abomination? Shall I bow down to a tree trunk?" ²⁰ He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside; and he can't deliver his soul, nor say, "Isn't there a lie in my right hand?"

¹⁸ "'"I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols.

¹² When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.

²⁶ yet they did not listen to me, nor inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff: they did worse than their fathers."

¹² Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No. They were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among those who fall; in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says the LORD.

¹³ But evil people and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

⁵ The sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbaal, as he took his rest at noon. ⁶ And look, the doorkeeper of the house had been sifting wheat, and she became drowsy and fell asleep. And Rechab and his brother Baanah slipped by. ⁷ And they went into the house where he was lying on his bed in his bedchamber. And they struck him and killed him, and beheaded him. And they took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night. ⁸ They brought the head of Ishbaal to David at Hebron, and said to the king, "Look, the head of Ishbaal, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. The LORD has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and his descendants." ⁹ David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, "As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ when someone told me, 'Look, Saul is dead,' thinking to have brought good news, I took hold of him, and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?" ¹² David commanded his young men, and they killed them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbaal, and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

²³ The servants of Amon conspired against him, and put the king to death in his own house. ²⁴ But the people of the land killed all those who had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place. ²⁵ Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ²⁶ He was buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza: and Josiah his son reigned in his place.

²⁵ When they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the City of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings. ²⁶ These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

²⁷ Now from the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and killed him there. ²⁸ They brought him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the City of David.

²³ But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

²² See then the goodness and severity of God. Toward those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

⁵ And surely I will require a reckoning for your lifeblood; from every animal I will require it, and from humans. From every human being I will require it for the life of his fellow human being. ⁶ Whoever takes a human life, by a human will his life be taken, for God made humankind in his own image.

³¹ "'Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death.

³³ "'So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: for blood, it pollutes the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.

¹ All the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah.

¹ Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

¹ Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and they anointed him and made him king in his father's place in Jerusalem.
