¹ Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom. ² Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched there a wise woman, and said to her, "Please act like a mourner, and put on mourning clothing, please, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman who has mourned a long time for the dead. ³ Go in to the king, and speak like this to him." So Joab put the words in her mouth. ⁴ And the woman of Tekoa went to the king, and she bowed down with her face to the ground, and showed respect, and said, "Help, O king." ⁵ The king said to her, "What ails you?" She answered, "Truly I am a widow, and my husband is dead. ⁶ Your handmaid had two sons, and they both fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other, and killed him. ⁷ Look, the whole family has risen against your handmaid, and they say, 'Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also.' Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and would leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the surface of the earth." ⁸ The king said to the woman, "Go to your house, and I will give a command concerning you." ⁹ The woman of Tekoa said to the king, "My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house; and the king and his throne be guiltless." ¹⁰ The king said, "Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you any more." ¹¹ Then she said, "Please let the king remember the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son." He said, "As the LORD lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground." ¹² Then the woman said, "Please let your handmaid speak a word to my lord the king." He said, "Say on." ¹³ The woman said, "Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? For in speaking this word the king is as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring home again his banished one. ¹⁴ For we must die, and are as water split on the ground, which can't be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him. ¹⁵ Now therefore seeing that I have come to speak this word to the king, my lord, it is because the people have made me afraid: and your handmaid said, 'I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.' ¹⁶ For the king will hear and deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who is seeking to destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God. ¹⁷ Then your handmaid said, 'Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May the LORD, your God, be with you.'" ¹⁸ Then the king answered the woman, "Please do not hide anything from me that I ask you." The woman said, "Let my lord the king now speak." ¹⁹ The king said, "Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?" The woman answered, "As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab, he urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid; ²⁰ to change the face of the matter has your servant Joab done this thing. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know that which is on earth." ²¹ The king said to Joab, "Look now, I have done this thing. Go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back." ²² Joab fell to the ground on his face, showed respect, and blessed the king. Joab said, "Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, king, in that the king has performed the request of his servant." ²³ So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. ²⁴ The king said, "Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face." So Absalom returned to his own house, and did not see the king's face. ²⁵ Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. ²⁶ When he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year's end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king's weight. ²⁷ To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar. She was a beautiful woman. ²⁸ Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem; and he did not see the king's face. ²⁹ Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come. ³⁰ Therefore he said to his servants, "Look, Joab's field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire." Absalom's servants set the field on fire. And the servants of Joab came to him with their clothes rent, and they said to him, "The servants of Absalom have set the field on fire." ³¹ Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?" ³² Absalom answered Joab, "Look, I sent to you, saying, 'Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me."'" ³³ So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

¹⁸ The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel. And Asahel was as quick on his feet as a wild gazelle.

³⁹ And the spirit of the king longed to go forth to Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, since he was dead.

³³ The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said, "My son Absalom. My son, my son Absalom. I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son."

² The victory that day was turned into mourning to all the people; for the people heard it said that day, "The king grieves for his son."

⁴ The king covered his face, and he cried with a loud voice, "My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son."

¹⁶ and their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.

²⁶ Many seek the ruler's favor, but a man's justice comes from the LORD.

³ Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, and put on your clothes, and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

²⁶ When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

²⁰ Then David arose from the ground, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of the LORD, and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and he asked for bread to eat. And they set bread before him, and he ate.

⁶ He built Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

²⁰ They rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, so you will be established. Believe his prophets, and you will prosper."

⁵ Next to them, the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their lord.

²⁷ After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

¹⁵ wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man's heart.

⁸ Let your garments be always white, and do not let your head lack oil.

¹ "Flee for safety, you people of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and raise up a signal on Beth Haccherem; for evil looks forth from the north, and a great destruction.

¹ The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

¹⁷ But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;

¹⁵ You shall speak to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do.

⁵ And God put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."

¹⁸ I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.

¹⁹ The king said, "Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?" The woman answered, "As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab, he urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your handmaid;

¹⁶ I have put my words in your mouth, and have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and tell Zion, 'You are my people.'"

²¹ "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit who is on you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your children, nor out of the mouth of your children's children," says the LORD, "from now on and forever."

⁹ Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, "Look, I have put my words in your mouth.

⁴¹ As soon as the boy was gone, David arose from beside the mound, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another, and wept one with another, and David wept the most.

²³ When Abigail saw David, she hurried, and got off from her donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground.

² It happened on the third day, that, look, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And it came about when he came to David that he fell to the ground and paid homage.

²⁶ As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, "Help, my lord, O king." ²⁷ He said, "If the LORD doesn't help you, from where could I help you? From of the threshing floor, or from the winepress?" ²⁸ The king said to her, "What ails you?" She answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.'

¹² Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had none to help him, ¹³ the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

³ A widow was in that city, and she often came to him, saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' ⁴ He would not for a while, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God, nor respect people, ⁵ yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her justice, or else she will wear me out by her continual coming.'"

⁸ The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign you over us.' ⁹ "But the olive tree said to them, 'Should I leave my fatness, with which by me they honor God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?' ¹⁰ "The trees said to the fig tree, 'Come, and reign over us.' ¹¹ "But the fig tree said to them, 'Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?' ¹² "The trees said to the vine, 'Come, and reign over us.' ¹³ "The vine said to them, 'Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?' ¹⁴ "Then all the trees said to the bramble, 'Come, and reign over us.' ¹⁵ "The bramble said to the trees, 'If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'

¹ The LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. ² The rich man had very many flocks and herds, ³ but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.

⁸ Cain said to Abel, his brother, "Let's go into the field." It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

¹³ He went out the second day, and look, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow?"

²⁶ but to the woman you shall do nothing; there is in the woman no sin worthy of death: for as when a man rises against his neighbor, and kills him, even so is this matter; ²⁷ for he found her in the field, the pledged to be married woman cried, and there was none to save her.

¹⁴ Look, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me."

⁴⁵ until your brotherʼs anger against you subsides, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and get you from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

¹⁹ The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death: when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

¹² then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. ¹³ Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

⁶ It shall be, that the firstborn whom she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother who is dead, that his name not be blotted out of Israel.

¹⁷ And the elders of his house approached him to lift him up from the ground, but he was unwilling, and he would not eat food with them.

³⁸ But the tenants, when they saw the son, said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and have his inheritance.'

⁵ David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die. ⁶ He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity."

⁴ Then the king said to Ziba, "Look, all that pertains to Mippibaal is yours." Ziba said, "I do obeisance. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king."

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy. The cause of him who I did not know, I searched out.

¹³ He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.

³ His delight will be in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears; ⁴ but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.

¹³ His mother said to him, "Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice, and go get them for me."

³³ "'So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: for blood, it pollutes the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.

¹ If one be found slain in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess it, lying in the field, and it isn't known who has struck him; ² then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure to the cities which are around him who is slain: ³ and it shall be, that the city which is nearest to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which hasn't been worked with, and which has not drawn in the yoke; ⁴ and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley. ⁵ The priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and according to their word shall every controversy and every stroke be. ⁶ All the elders of that city, who are nearest to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley; ⁷ and they shall answer and say, "Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. ⁸ Forgive, LORD, your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and do not allow innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel." The blood shall be forgiven them. ⁹ So you shall put away the innocent blood from the midst of you, when you shall do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD.

²⁴ She fell at his feet, and said, "On me, my lord, on me be the iniquity; and please let your handmaid speak in your ears. Hear the words of your handmaid.

²⁸ Afterward, when David heard it, he said, "I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD now and forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner. ²⁹ May it whirl over the head of Joab, and on all his father's house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread."

³³ So shall their blood return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his descendants forever. But to David, and to his descendants, and to his house, and to his throne, there shall be peace forever from the LORD."

²⁵ All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children."

²² Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted up my hand to God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

² Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh. ³ I will make you swear by the God of heaven and earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

⁵⁰ If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one is with us; see, God is witness between me and you."

²¹ or in enmity struck him with his hand, so that he died; he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer, the murderer must surely be put to death; the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

²⁷ and the avenger of blood find him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kill the manslayer; he shall not be guilty of blood,

⁴ This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and did not hate him in time past; ⁵ as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to chop wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live: ⁶ lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he did not hate him in time past. ⁷ Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourselves. ⁸ If the LORD your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers; ⁹ if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, besides these three: ¹⁰ that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you.

³ that the manslayer who kills any person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there. They shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. ⁴ He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city. They shall take him into the city with them, and give him a place, that he may live among them. ⁵ If the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, and did not hate him before. ⁶ He shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days. Then the manslayer shall return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city he fled from.'"

⁴⁵ The people said to Saul, "Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it. As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has worked with God this day." So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

⁴² Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.'" He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.

¹⁰ Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no punishment shall happen to you for this thing."

⁵² Solomon said, "If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of him shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die."

² and you shall swear, 'As the LORD lives,' in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory."

³⁰ but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

³⁴ Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is for your preservation; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads."

²⁷ Abraham answered, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

³² He said, "Oh do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the ten's sake."

¹⁸ Then Judah approached him, and said, "My lord, please allow your servant to speak a word in the ears of my lord, and do not become angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.

¹ You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would reason the cause with you: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously?

¹ Agrippa said to Paul, "You may speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand, and made his defense.

² The leaders of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen who drew sword.

⁸ Now therefore you shall tell my servant David this, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel.

⁷ Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

³⁷ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. ³⁸ So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

⁴⁰ As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone." The king of Israel said to him, "So your judgment shall be; you yourself have decided it." ⁴¹ He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets. ⁴² He said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.'"

⁴² When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?" ⁴³ Simon answered, "He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most." He said to him, "You have judged correctly." ⁴⁴ Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair.

¹³ but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen: then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.

⁴⁰ "'If they confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me, and also that, because they walked contrary to me,

¹⁵ For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the foreigner living among them, shall these six cities be for refuge; that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.

²⁵ and the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he was fled: and he shall dwell in it until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

²⁸ because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return into the land of his possession.

¹⁷ For the LORD your God, he is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awesome, who doesn't respect persons, nor takes reward.

²⁵ Then David said to the messenger, "Thus you shall tell Joab, 'Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.' Encourage him."

⁷ "For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, that the tender branch of it will not cease. ⁸ Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stock dies in the ground, ⁹ yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant. ¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and doesn't rise. Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, until my release should come.

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living.

¹⁵ all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.

¹⁹ Who doesn't respect the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted within me.

⁷ Let them vanish as water that flows away. When they draw the bow, let their arrows be made blunt.

³ Their blood they have shed like water around Jerusalem. There was no one to bury them.

³ You turn man to destruction, saying, "Return, you descendants of Adam."

¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.

¹⁹ For that which happens to the sons of men happens to animals. Even one thing happens to them. As the one dies, so the other dies. Yes, they have all one breath; and man has no advantage over the animals: for all is vanity. ²⁰ All go to one place. All are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.

⁵ For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

¹ Thus says the LORD, "Where is the bill of your mother's divorce, with which I have put her away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Look, for your iniquities were you sold, and for your transgressions was your mother put away. ² Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it can't redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Look, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stink, because there is no water, and die for thirst.

¹⁶ They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and teach the way of God in truth, no matter whom you teach, for you are not partial to anyone.

³⁴ And Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I perceive that God does not show favoritism;

¹¹ For there is no partiality with God.

²⁷ Inasmuch as it is appointed for people to die once, and after this, judgment,

¹⁷ If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man's work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear:

¹⁹ Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that God has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is from human beings, they are cursed before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn't cling to the LORD's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

⁹ Achish answered David, "I know that you are good in my sight, as an angel of God. Nevertheless the leaders of the Philistines have said, 'He shall not go up with us to the battle.'

²⁰ to change the face of the matter has your servant Joab done this thing. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know that which is on earth."

²⁷ He has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is good in your eyes.

⁹ Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?"

²⁸ All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Can't my taste discern mischievous things?

²¹ The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

¹⁴ Now the natural person does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵ But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one.

¹⁴ But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

¹⁷ He said, "What is the thing that he has spoken to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you in your ears." ¹⁸ And Samuel told him everything, and did not hide anything from him. And he said, "It is the LORD. Let him do what seems good to him."

¹⁴ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said to Jeremiah, "I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me."

²⁵ But if the officials hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, 'Declare to us now what you have said to the king; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said to you':

¹⁷ "Please let us pass through your land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go along the king's highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border."

³² You shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God has commanded you: you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

¹⁴ and shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

⁷ Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

²⁶ She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.

⁵⁵ When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I can't tell."

³ And David answered and said, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved:' but truly as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."

²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, since the LORD has withheld you from blood guiltiness, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies, and those who seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

²⁷ When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the abdomen, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

²⁹ May it whirl over the head of Joab, and on all his father's house. Let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread."

³⁴ Your hands were not bound in chains, your feet were not put into fetters. As a man falls before the ruthless, so you fell." All the people wept again over him.

¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are camped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As the LORD lives, and as you live, I will not do this thing."

¹⁴ It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ He wrote in the letter, saying, "Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck, and die."

³ Go in to the king, and speak like this to him." So Joab put the words in her mouth.

⁵ "Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, even what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging the blood of war in peacetime, and put the blood of war on my belt that was about my waist, and on my sandal that was on my foot. ⁶ Do therefore according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

² Elijah said to Elisha, "Please wait here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.

²⁷ Do not turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to withstand or to contradict.

⁵ for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

²³ And David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD said to him, "You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them opposite the balsam trees.

¹⁷ Then your handmaid said, 'Please let the word of my lord the king bring rest; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad. May the LORD, your God, be with you.'"

²¹ Please do not let me respect any man's person, neither will I give flattering titles to any man. ²² For I do not know how to give flattering titles; or else my Maker would soon take me away.

¹⁶ "Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all. ¹⁹ "What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place, ²⁰ that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house? ²¹ Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great. ²² Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth? ²⁵ Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it? ³⁰ The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen. ³¹ "Can you fasten the chains of Kimah, or loosen the cords of Kesil? ³² Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or can you lead Aysh with her children? ³³ Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth? ³⁴ "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, 'Here we are?' ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky, ³⁸ when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together? ³⁹ "Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

²⁸ A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

¹ Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. ² But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he does not yet know as he ought to know.

³⁹ For, as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die." But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

¹¹ Then she said, "Please let the king remember the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son." He said, "As the LORD lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground."

²⁶ And the king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and those reclining, he did not wish to refuse her.

⁸ But Noah found favor in the sight of God.

¹⁶ For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn't it in that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?" ¹⁷ The LORD said to Moses, "I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."

² Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, "Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor." She said to her, "Go, my daughter."

³⁹ All the people crossed over the Jordan, but the king remained. Then the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.

² The people blessed all the men who willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem.

¹¹ For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it commended me:

²⁰ if his heart hasn't blessed me, if he hasn't been warmed with my sheep's fleece;

²⁸ Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her:

³ and his second, Daluiah, of Abigail of Carmel; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

³ But Judah spoke to him, saying, "The man strictly warned us, saying, 'You may not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

²⁸ Pharaoh said to him, "Get away from me. Make sure you never see my face again; for in the day you see my face you shall die."

¹³ He said, "Good. I will make a covenant with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you shall not see my face unless you first bring Mikal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see my face."

²⁸ Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem; and he did not see the king's face.

⁴ They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

³⁵ The LORD will strike you in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore boil, of which you can not be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.

² He had a son, whose name was Saul, a handsome young man; and there was no one among the children of Israel more handsome than he was. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For humans do not see as God sees, for humans look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart."

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

³⁰ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven't been closed, neither bandaged, neither soothed with oil.

²⁷ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead people's bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁷ that he might present the church to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

¹⁶ Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants' standard.

³⁶ You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

⁹ And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. And he was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was left hanging between the sky and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.

²⁴ It shall happen that instead of sweet spices, there shall be rottenness; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well set hair, baldness; instead of a robe, a girding of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.

²⁰ "'Neither shall they shave their heads, nor allow their locks to grow long; they shall only cut off the hair of their heads.

⁹ "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'Let it suffice you, princes of Israel: remove violence and spoil, and execute justice and righteousness; dispossessing my people, says the Lord GOD. ¹⁰ You shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath. ¹¹ The ephah and the bath shall be of one measure, that the bath may contain the tenth part of a homer, and the ephah the tenth part of a homer: its measure shall be after the homer. ¹² The shekel shall be twenty gerahs. Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels shall be your mina. ¹³ "'This is the offering that you shall offer: the sixth part of an ephah from a homer of wheat; and you shall give the sixth part of an ephah from a homer of barley; ¹⁴ and the set portion of oil, of the bath of oil, the tenth part of a bath out of the cor, which is ten baths, even a homer; (for ten baths are a homer;)

¹⁴ Doesn't even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

¹ It happened after this, that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

¹⁸ Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the King's Valley; for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in memory." He called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument, to this day.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath. Above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth. He shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned.

²² "I will rise up against them," says the LORD of hosts, "and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son's son," says the LORD.

³⁰ Thus says the LORD, "Write this man down childless, a man who will not succeed in his days; for none of his descendants will succeed in sitting on the throne of David, and ruling in Judah.

³⁰ Therefore he said to his servants, "Look, Joab's field is near mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire." Absalom's servants set the field on fire. And the servants of Joab came to him with their clothes rent, and they said to him, "The servants of Absalom have set the field on fire." ³¹ Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"

¹² But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by the eunuchs. Therefore the king was very angry, and his anger burned in him.

³ and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come.

⁴ Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch in the midst between every two tails. ⁵ And when he had set fire to the torches, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon,' then kill him. Do not be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant." ²⁹ The servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man got up on his mule, and fled.

⁹ She wrote in the letters, saying, "Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹⁰ Set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, 'You cursed God and the king.' Then carry him out, and stone him to death." ¹¹ The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ The two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him. The base fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king." Then they carried him out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned, and is dead."

³³ He said, "Throw her down." So they threw her down; and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses. Then he trampled her under foot.

⁶ Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, "If you are on my side, and if you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time." Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up. ⁷ It happened, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and killed them, even seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him to Jezreel.

¹² The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."

¹² Isn't this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?' For it were better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness."

³ and the children of Israel said to them, "We wish that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

³ The people were thirsty for water there; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"

¹³ And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, "You are blessed by the LORD. I have performed the commandment of the LORD."

⁸ Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you: but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?"

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin.

¹³ He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

²² For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me," says the Lord GOD. ²³ "How can you say, 'I am not defiled. I have not gone after the Baals'? See your way in the valley. Know what you have done. You are a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

¹² Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No. They were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among those who fall; in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says the LORD.

⁴⁴ "Then they will also answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not help you?'

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

²⁶ His father Isaac said to him, "Come near now, and kiss me, my son."

⁴ Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, hugged his neck, and kissed him. And they wept.

¹⁵ And he kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and after that his brothers talked with him.

²⁰ "He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
