¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, look, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.

⁹ Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given to your master's son. ¹⁰ You shall till the land for him, you, and your sons, and your servants, and you shall bring food into your masterʼs house that they may eat. But Mippibaal your master's son shall eat bread always at my table." Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

²⁴ Now Mippibaal son of Jonathan son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither cared for his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home safely. ²⁵ It happened, when he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, "Why did you not go with me, Mippibaal?" ²⁶ He answered, "My lord, O king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said to him, 'Saddle a donkey for me so that I may ride on it and go with the king,' for your servant is lame. ²⁷ He has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is good in your eyes. ²⁸ For all my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more to the king?" ²⁹ The king said to him, "Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Ziba divide the land." ³⁰ Mippibaal said to the king, "Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house."

³ He doesn't slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor lifts up an insult against his neighbor.

¹⁸ You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness.

⁵ I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won't tolerate one who is haughty and conceited.

¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

²⁸ A false witness will perish, and a man who listens speaks to eternity.

⁵ Do not trust in a neighbor. Do not put confidence in a friend. With the woman lying in your embrace, be careful of the words of your mouth.

⁹ But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹¹ Woe to them. For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in Korah's rebellion.
