¹ It happened in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² "Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, 'Aha, she is broken: the gate of the peoples; she is turned to me; I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste': ³ therefore thus says the Lord GOD, 'Look, I am against you, Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come up.' ⁴ They shall destroy the walls of Tyre, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her a bare rock. ⁵ She shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea; for I have spoken it," says the Lord GOD; "and she shall become a spoil to the nations. ⁶ Her daughters who are in the field shall be slain with the sword: and they shall know that I am the LORD. ⁷ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I will bring on Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and a company, and many people. ⁸ He shall kill your daughters in the field with the sword; and he shall make forts against you, and cast up a mound against you, and raise up the buckler against you. ⁹ He shall set his battering engines against your walls, and with his axes he shall break down your towers. ¹⁰ By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover you: your walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wagons, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into your gates, as men enter into a city in which is made a breach. ¹¹ With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all your streets; he shall kill your people with the sword; and the pillars of your strength shall go down to the ground. ¹² They shall make a spoil of your riches, and make a prey of your merchandise; and they shall break down your walls, and destroy your pleasant houses; and they shall lay your stones and your timber and your dust in the midst of the waters. ¹³ I will cause the noise of your songs to cease; and the sound of your harps shall be no more heard. ¹⁴ I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for the spreading of nets; you shall be built no more: for I the LORD have spoken it,' says the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ "Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: 'Shall not the islands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you? ¹⁶ Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay aside their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit on the ground, and shall tremble every moment, and be astonished at you. ¹⁷ They shall take up a lamentation over you, and tell you, "How you are destroyed, you have vanished from the seas, the renowned city, who was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who caused their terror to be on all who lived there. ¹⁸ Now shall the islands tremble in the day of your fall; yes, the islands that are in the sea shall be dismayed at your departure."' ¹⁹ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'When I shall make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep on you, and the great waters shall cover you; ²⁰ then will I bring you down with those who descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make you to dwell in the lower parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, that you be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living: ²¹ I will make you a terror, and you shall no more have any being; though you are sought for, yet you will never be found again,' says the Lord GOD."

¹ It happened in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in my house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there on me.

¹ It happened in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and sat before me.

²⁹ The border turned to Ramah, to the fortified city of Tyre; and the border turned to Hosah, and it ended at the sea; Mahalab, and Achzib,

¹¹ Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and craftsmen of wood, and craftsmen of a wall; and they built David a palace.

²¹ Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, "Aha. Aha. Our eye has seen it."

¹⁵ Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, "Aha. Aha."

³ Let them be turned back because of their shame who say to me, "Aha. Aha."

² For, look, your enemies are stirred up. Those who hate you have lifted up their heads. ³ They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones. ⁴ "Come," they say, "and let's destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more."

⁷ Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

¹ The burden of Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish. For it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in. From the land of Kittim it is revealed to them. ² Be still, you inhabitants of the coast, you whom the merchants of Sidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. ³ On great waters, the seed of the Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue. She was the market of nations. ⁴ Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins." ⁵ When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report of Tyre. ⁶ Pass over to Tarshish. Wail, you inhabitants of the coast. ⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel? ⁸ Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth? ⁹ The LORD of hosts has planned it, to defile all the pride of glory, to shame all the honored of the earth. ¹⁰ Cultivate your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any more. ¹¹ He has stretched out his hand over the sea. He has shaken the kingdoms. The LORD has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds. ¹² He said, "You shall rejoice no more, you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, pass over to Kittim. Even there you will have no rest." ¹³ Look, the land of the Chaldeans. This people was not. The Assyrians founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness. They set up their towers. They overthrew its palaces. They made it a ruin. ¹⁴ Howl, you ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste. ¹⁵ It will come to pass in that day that Tyre will be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king. After the end of seventy years it will be to Tyre like in the song of the prostitute. ¹⁶ Take a harp; go about the city, you prostitute that has been forgotten. Make sweet melody. Sing many songs, that you may be remembered. ¹⁷ It will happen after the end of seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall return to her wages, and will play the prostitute with all the kingdoms of the world on the surface of the earth. ¹⁸ Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to the LORD. It will not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

²² and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;

³ and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the people of Ammon, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah;

⁴ because of the day that comes to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains: for the LORD will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

¹ Of the people of Ammon. "Thus says the LORD: 'Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Milcom possess Gad, and his people dwell in its cities?

¹ How the city sits solitary, that was full of people. She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations. She who was a princess among the provinces has become a forced laborer.

² "Son of man, set your face toward the people of Ammon, and prophesy against them: ³ and tell the people of Ammon, 'Hear the word of the Lord GOD: Thus says the Lord GOD, "Because you said, 'Aha,' against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was made desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity:

⁶ For thus says the Lord GOD: "Because you have clapped your hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced with all the despite of your soul against the land of Israel;

¹⁰ to the people of the east, to go against the people of Ammon; and I will give them for a possession, that the people of Ammon may not be remembered among the nations.

¹ The word of the LORD came again to me, saying, ² "You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre; ³ and tell Tyre, 'You who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, thus says the Lord GOD: "You, Tyre, have said, 'I am perfect in beauty.' ⁴ Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty. ⁵ They have made all your planks of fir trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. ⁶ Of the oaks of Bashan have they made your oars; they have made your deck with cypress wood inlaid with ivory, from the islands of Kittim. ⁷ Of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt was your sail, that it might be to you for a banner; blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning. ⁸ The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers: your wise men, Tyre, were in you, they were your pilots. ⁹ The old men of Gebal and the wise men of it were in you your repairers of ship seams: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to deal in your merchandise. ¹⁰ Persia and Lud and Put were in your army, your men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in you; they set forth your comeliness. ¹¹ The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around, and valorous men were in your towers; they hanged their shields on your walls all around; they have perfected your beauty. ¹² Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for your wares. ¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. ¹⁴ They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses and war horses and mules. ¹⁵ The men of Dedan were your traffickers; many islands were the market of your hand: they brought you in exchange horns of ivory and ebony. ¹⁶ Aram was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks: they traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, and embroidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies. ¹⁷ Judah, and the land of Israel, they were your traffickers: they traded for your merchandise wheat of Minnith, and confections, and honey, and oil, and balm. ¹⁸ Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool. ¹⁹ Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among your merchandise. ²⁰ Dedan was your trafficker in precious cloths for riding. ²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of your hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they your merchants. ²² The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were your traffickers; they traded for your wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur and Chilmad, were your traffickers. ²⁴ These were your traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in chests of rich clothing, bound with cords and made of cedar, among your merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas. ²⁶ "'"Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas. ²⁷ Your riches, and your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, and your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, and the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is in the midst of you, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin. ²⁸ At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake.

² Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because the enemy has said against you, 'Aha.' and, 'The ancient high places are ours in possession'"';

⁴ "Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.

⁹ Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole community to Edom, and did not remember the brotherly covenant; ¹⁰ but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its palaces."

² and Hamath, also, which borders on it; Tyre and Sidon, because they are very wise. ³ Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver like the dust, and fine gold like the mire of the streets. ⁴ Look, the LORD will dispossess her, and he will strike her power in the sea; and she will be devoured with fire.

⁵ Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout people from every nation under the sky. ⁶ When this sound was heard, the crowd came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. ⁷ They were all amazed and marveled, saying, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? ⁸ How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? ⁹ Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

³ The floods have lifted up, LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves. ⁴ More majestic than the sounds of many waters, more majestic than the breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is majestic.

²⁵ For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.

³⁰ They will roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land look, darkness and distress. The light is darkened in its clouds.

²³ They take hold of bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Zion.'"

¹³ Look, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain," says the LORD; "you that say, 'Who shall come down against us? Or who shall enter into our habitations?'

³¹ "Look, I am against you, you proud one," says the Lord, the LORD of hosts; for your day has come, the time that I will visit you.

⁴² They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea; and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Babylon.

⁴² The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of its waves.

⁸ therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I, even I, am against you; and I will execute judgments in the midst of you in the sight of the nations.

³ and tell the land of Israel, 'Thus says the LORD: "Look, I am against you, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.

²⁶ "'"Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.

³² In their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for you, and lament over you, saying, 'Who is there like Tyre, like her who is brought to silence in the midst of the sea?' ³³ When your wares went forth out of the seas, you filled many peoples; you enriched the kings of the earth with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise. ³⁴ In the time that you were broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company fell in your midst.

²² and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Look, I am against you, Sidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of you;" and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.

³ and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Look, I am against you, Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal:

¹¹ Now many nations have assembled against you, that say, "Let her be defiled, and let our eye gloat over Zion."

¹² The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with the kill, and his dens with prey.

² For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city will be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city will go out into captivity, and the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city.

²⁵ And there will be signs in the sun, and moon, and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves;

⁴¹ and he shall cause the inside of the house to be scraped all over, and they shall pour out the mortar, that they scraped off, outside of the city into an unclean place. ⁴² They shall take other stones, and put them in the place of those stones; and he shall take other mortar, and shall plaster the house. ⁴³ "If the plague comes again, and breaks out in the house, after he has taken out the stones, and after he has scraped the house, and after it was plastered; ⁴⁴ then the priest shall come in and look; and look, if the plague has spread in the house, it is a destructive mildew in the house. It is unclean. ⁴⁵ And he shall break down the house, its stones, and its timber, and all the house's mortar. He shall carry them out of the city into an unclean place.

¹¹ He has stretched out his hand over the sea. He has shaken the kingdoms. The LORD has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds.

¹⁰ "Go up on her walls, and destroy; but do not make a full end. Take away her branches; for they are not the LORD's.

⁷ For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it on the bare rock; she didn't pour it on the ground, to cover it with dust. ⁸ That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have set her blood on the bare rock, that it should not be covered.'

⁹ He shall set his battering engines against your walls, and with his axes he shall break down your towers.

¹² They shall make a spoil of your riches, and make a prey of your merchandise; and they shall break down your walls, and destroy your pleasant houses; and they shall lay your stones and your timber and your dust in the midst of the waters.

¹⁰ but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its palaces."

³ Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver like the dust, and fine gold like the mire of the streets.

⁷ therefore, look, I have stretched out my hand on you, and will deliver you for a spoil to the nations; and I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish out of the countries: I will destroy you; and you shall know that I am the LORD."'"

¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall carry off her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army.

¹⁰ It shall happen, that fishermen shall stand by it: from En Gedi even to En Eglaim shall be a place for the spreading of nets; their fish shall be after their kinds, as the fish of the Great Sea, exceeding many.

² Therefore look, the days come,' says the LORD, 'that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the people of Ammon; and it shall become a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel possess those who possessed him,' says the LORD.

⁴⁶ Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters; and your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.

⁴⁸ As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters.

⁵ I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the people of Ammon a resting place for flocks: and you shall know that I am the LORD."

¹¹ and I will execute judgments on Moab; and they shall know that I am the LORD.'"

¹⁴ I will lay my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel; and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath; and they shall know my vengeance, says the Lord GOD.'"

¹⁷ I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance on them.'"

⁸ He shall kill your daughters in the field with the sword; and he shall make forts against you, and cast up a mound against you, and raise up the buckler against you.

¹² Artachshasta, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect and so forth.

⁸ For he says, "Aren't all of my officials kings?

¹³ Look, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us. For we are ruined.

⁹ look, I will send and take all the families of the north,' says the LORD, 'and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations around; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.

³ and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the people of Ammon, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah; ⁴ and give them a command to their masters, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, You shall tell your masters: ⁵ "I have made the earth, the men and the animals that are on the surface of the earth, by my great power and by my outstretched arm; and I give it to whom it seems right to me. ⁶ Now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the animals of the field also have I given him to serve him.

³² and he spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him in Babylon,

¹⁴ that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

²⁴ They shall come against you from the north with chariots, and wagons, and with a company of peoples; they shall set themselves against you with buckler and shield and helmet all around; and I will commit the judgment to them, and they shall judge you according to their judgments.

³ therefore thus says the Lord GOD, 'Look, I am against you, Tyre, and will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come up.'

¹⁸ "Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyre: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was worn; yet had he no wages, nor his army, from Tyre, for the service that he had served against it. ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall carry off her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army. ²⁰ I have given him the land of Egypt as his recompense for which he served, because they worked for me,' says the Lord GOD.

¹⁰ "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease, by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. ¹¹ He and his people with him, the terrible of the nations, shall be brought in to destroy the land; and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and fill the land with the slain.

¹¹ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'The sword of the king of Babylon shall come on you. ¹² By the swords of the mighty will I cause your multitude to fall; the terrible of the nations are they all: and they shall bring to nothing the pride of Egypt, and all its multitude shall be destroyed.

³⁷ You, O king, are king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the glory;

⁴⁷ The king answered Daniel and said, "Surely your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing you have been able to reveal this secret."

¹⁰ But although they sold themselves among the nations, I will now gather them; and they begin to waste away because of the oppression of the king of mighty ones.

³ The shield of his mighty men is made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation, and the pine spears are brandished. ⁴ The chariots rage in the streets. They rush back and forth in the broad ways. Their appearance is like torches. They run like the lightnings.

² The noise of the whip, the noise of the rattling of wheels, prancing horses, and bounding chariots, ³ the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies. They stumble on their bodies,

¹⁵ They came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maacah, and they built a siege ramp against the city, and it stood against the outer wall; and all the people who were with Joab battered the wall, to bring it down.

⁶ For the LORD of hosts said, "Cut down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem. She is the city to be punished; she is full of oppression in the midst of her.

²⁴ Look, the mounds, they have come to the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what you have spoken has happened; and look, you see it.

⁴ It happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and camped against it; and they built forts against it round about.

²² In his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up mounds, to build forts.

¹⁵ He made in Jerusalem engines, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and on the battlements, with which to shoot arrows and great stones. His name spread far abroad; for he was marvelously helped, until he was strong.

⁵ It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him."

²⁰ So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. It happened, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

³ At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers do not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;

⁷ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I will bring on Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and a company, and many people.

¹⁵ "Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: 'Shall not the islands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you?

²⁸ At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake.

²⁸ whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent. Their horses' hoofs will be like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind.

⁵ For he has brought down those who dwell on high, the lofty city. He lays it low to the ground. He casts it to the dust.

¹³ He shall also break the pillars of Beth Shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of Egypt shall he burn with fire."'"

²⁷ Set up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz: appoint a marshal against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough canker worm.

⁸ His horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves. And their horsemen press proudly on, and, their horsemen come from afar. They fly as an eagle that hurries to devour.

²⁷ Hezekiah had a very great amount of riches and honor: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of goodly vessels;

¹⁰ At the return of the year king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his relative king over Judah and Jerusalem.

⁸ Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth?

¹² Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.

³⁴ Wail, you shepherds, and cry; and wallow in dust, you principal of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come, and you shall fall like a goodly vessel.

⁵ She shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea; for I have spoken it," says the Lord GOD; "and she shall become a spoil to the nations.

³ and tell Tyre, 'You who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, thus says the Lord GOD: "You, Tyre, have said, 'I am perfect in beauty.' ⁴ Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty. ⁵ They have made all your planks of fir trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. ⁶ Of the oaks of Bashan have they made your oars; they have made your deck with cypress wood inlaid with ivory, from the islands of Kittim. ⁷ Of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt was your sail, that it might be to you for a banner; blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning. ⁸ The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers: your wise men, Tyre, were in you, they were your pilots. ⁹ The old men of Gebal and the wise men of it were in you your repairers of ship seams: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to deal in your merchandise. ¹⁰ Persia and Lud and Put were in your army, your men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in you; they set forth your comeliness. ¹¹ The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around, and valorous men were in your towers; they hanged their shields on your walls all around; they have perfected your beauty. ¹² Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for your wares. ¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. ¹⁴ They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses and war horses and mules. ¹⁵ The men of Dedan were your traffickers; many islands were the market of your hand: they brought you in exchange horns of ivory and ebony. ¹⁶ Aram was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks: they traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, and embroidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies. ¹⁷ Judah, and the land of Israel, they were your traffickers: they traded for your merchandise wheat of Minnith, and confections, and honey, and oil, and balm. ¹⁸ Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool. ¹⁹ Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among your merchandise. ²⁰ Dedan was your trafficker in precious cloths for riding. ²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of your hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they your merchants. ²² The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were your traffickers; they traded for your wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur and Chilmad, were your traffickers. ²⁴ These were your traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in chests of rich clothing, bound with cords and made of cedar, among your merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas. ²⁶ "'"Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas. ²⁷ Your riches, and your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, and your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, and the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is in the midst of you, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin. ²⁸ At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake. ²⁹ All who handled the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand on the land, ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust on their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: ³¹ and they shall make themselves bald for you, and clothe them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for you in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning. ³² In their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for you, and lament over you, saying, 'Who is there like Tyre, like her who is brought to silence in the midst of the sea?' ³³ When your wares went forth out of the seas, you filled many peoples; you enriched the kings of the earth with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise. ³⁴ In the time that you were broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company fell in your midst. ³⁵ All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their face. ³⁶ The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you are become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being."'"

⁸ They shall bring you down to the pit; and you shall die the death of those who are slain, in the heart of the seas.

⁸ Also their gods, with their molten images, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold, shall he carry captive into Egypt; and he shall withdraw for some years from the king of the north.

¹⁵ Though he is fruitful among his brothers, an east wind will come, the breath of the LORD coming up from the wilderness; and his spring will become dry, and his fountain will be dried up. He will plunder the storehouse of treasure.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, and take taxes from him of wheat: You have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

⁹ Take the spoil of silver. Take the spoil of gold, for there is no end of the store, the glory of all goodly furniture.

¹⁴ "but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they made the pleasant land desolate."

¹⁹ "Do not store up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and decay destroy, and where thieves break through and steal; ²⁰ but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;

¹¹ The merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise any more; ¹² merchandise of gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple, silk, scarlet, all expensive wood, every vessel of ivory, every vessel made of most precious wood, and of bronze, and iron, and marble; ¹³ and cinnamon, spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, slaves and human lives.

¹² The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.

² You that are full of shouting, a tumultuous city, a joyous town; your slain are not slain with the sword, neither are they dead in battle.

⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel?

¹⁶ Take a harp; go about the city, you prostitute that has been forgotten. Make sweet melody. Sing many songs, that you may be remembered.

⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases. The sound of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

³⁴ Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste."

⁹ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Look, I will cause to cease out of this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

¹⁰ Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.

¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared.

¹¹ I will also cause all her celebrations to cease: her feasts, her new moons, her Sabbaths, and all her solemn assemblies.

⁴ Who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ who strum on the strings of a harp; who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. ⁷ Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive; and the feasting and lounging will end.

¹ Come now, you rich, weep and cry aloud for your miseries that are coming on you. ² Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Look, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.

²² The voice of harpists, minstrels, flute players, and trumpeters will be heard no more at all in you. No craftsman, of whatever craft, will be found any more at all in you. The sound of a mill will be heard no more at all in you. ²³ The light of a lamp will shine no more at all in you. The voice of the bridegroom and of the bride will be heard no more at all in you; for your merchants were the princes of the earth; for with your sorcery all the nations were deceived.

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie, nor the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

¹⁶ You shall gather all its plunder into the midst of its street, and shall burn with fire the city, and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God: and it shall be a ruin forever; it shall not be built again.

¹⁴ Look, he breaks down, and it can't be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

²⁷ For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can stop it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?"

¹³ Thus shall my anger be accomplished, and I will cause my wrath toward them to rest, and I shall be comforted; and they shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken in my zeal, when I have accomplished my wrath on them.

¹⁵ And you shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment, to the nations that are around you, when I shall execute judgments on you in anger and in wrath, and in wrathful rebukes; I, the LORD, have spoken;

¹⁷ and I will send on you famine and evil animals, and they shall bereave you; and pestilence and blood shall pass through you; and I will bring the sword on you: I, the LORD, have spoken it.'"

²¹ All the choice men among all his troups will fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it.' ²² "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain: ²³ in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of its branches shall they dwell. ²⁴ All the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, the LORD, have spoken and have done it.'"

³² You shall be for fuel to the fire; your blood shall be in the midst of the land; you shall be remembered no more: for I, the LORD, have spoken it."'"

¹⁴ Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken it, and will do it.

⁴ They shall destroy the walls of Tyre, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her a bare rock. ⁵ She shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea; for I have spoken it," says the Lord GOD; "and she shall become a spoil to the nations.

¹² I will make the rivers dry, and will sell the land into the hand of evil men; and I will make the land desolate, and all that is in it, by the hand of strangers: I, the LORD, have spoken it.'

⁴ Whereas Edom says, "We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places;" thus says the LORD of hosts, "They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them 'The Wicked Land,' even the people against whom the LORD shows wrath forever."

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

¹⁹ Men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

²¹ The earth trembles at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise which is heard in the Sea at the End.

¹⁸ Now shall the islands tremble in the day of your fall; yes, the islands that are in the sea shall be dismayed at your departure."'

³⁵ All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their face.

¹⁶ I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to Sheol with those who descend into the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the lower parts of the earth.

¹⁰ Yes, I will make many peoples amazed at you, and their kings shall be horribly afraid for you, when I shall brandish my sword before them; and they shall tremble at every moment, every man for his own life, in the day of your fall.'

²⁶ whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens." ²⁷ This phrase, "Yet once more," signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed. Trembling takes hold of the leaders of Moab. All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.

⁴ When the people heard this evil news, they mourned: and no one put on his jewelry. ⁵ The LORD said to Moses, "Tell the children of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up into your midst for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you.'"

¹² When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and did not recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and threw dust in the air over their heads. ¹³ So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

²² Those who hate you shall be clothed with shame. The tent of the wicked shall be no more."

²⁶ Let them be put to shame and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.

¹⁸ He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment. It came into his inward parts like water, like oil into his bones.

²⁹ Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor. Let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will be resplendent."

²⁶ Her gates shall lament and mourn; and she shall be desolate and sit on the ground.

⁹ Sheol from beneath has moved for you to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the dead for you, even all the rulers of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. ¹⁰ They all will answer and ask you, "Have you also become as weak as we are? Have you become like us?" ¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you. ¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low. ¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north.

¹ The burden of Tyre. Howl, you ships of Tarshish. For it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in. From the land of Kittim it is revealed to them. ² Be still, you inhabitants of the coast, you whom the merchants of Sidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. ³ On great waters, the seed of the Shihor, the harvest of the Nile, was her revenue. She was the market of nations. ⁴ Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins." ⁵ When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report of Tyre. ⁶ Pass over to Tarshish. Wail, you inhabitants of the coast. ⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel? ⁸ Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth?

¹ "Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.

² Shake yourself from the dust. Arise, sit up, Jerusalem. Release yourself from the bonds of your neck, captive daughter of Zion.

¹⁰ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence. They have cast up dust on their heads; they have clothed themselves with sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

⁸ Now will I shortly pour out my wrath on you, and accomplish my anger against you, and will judge you according to your ways; and I will bring on you all your abominations.

²¹ The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of Sheol with those who help him: 'They are gone down, they lie still, even the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.' ²² "Asshur is there and all her company; her graves are all around her; all of them slain, fallen by the sword; ²³ whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit, and her company is around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused terror in the land of the living. ²⁴ "There is Elam and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who are gone down uncircumcised into the lower parts of the earth, who caused their terror in the land of the living, and have borne their shame with those who go down to the pit. ²⁵ They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude; her graves are around her; all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for their terror was caused in the land of the living, and they have borne their shame with those who go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of those who are slain. ²⁶ "There is Meshech, Tubal, and all their multitude around her grave; all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they caused their terror in the land of the living. ²⁷ And they are not buried with the fallen warriors of ancient times, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, and having their swords placed under their heads, and their [shields] over their bones; for they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living. ²⁸ "But you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shall lie with those who are slain by the sword. ²⁹ "There is Edom, her kings and all her princes, who in their might are laid with those who are slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with those who go down to the pit. ³⁰ "There are the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who are gone down with the slain; in the terror which they caused by their might they are put to shame; and they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. ³¹ "Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword," says the Lord GOD. ³² "For I have put his terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude," says the Lord GOD.

⁶ Then the king's face was turned pale, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs gave way, and his knees began knocking together.

¹⁰ They will walk after the LORD, who will roar like a lion; for he will roar, and the children will come trembling from the west.

⁶ The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

⁵ Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, towards one another; for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

¹¹ The merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise any more; ¹² merchandise of gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple, silk, scarlet, all expensive wood, every vessel of ivory, every vessel made of most precious wood, and of bronze, and iron, and marble; ¹³ and cinnamon, spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, slaves and human lives. ¹⁴ The fruits which your soul lusted after have been lost to you, and all things that were luxury and splendor have perished from you, and you will never ever find them again. ¹⁵ The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, will stand far away for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning; ¹⁶ saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, she who was dressed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls. ¹⁷ For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.' Every shipmaster, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far away, ¹⁸ and exclaimed as they looked at the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What is like the great city?' ¹⁹ They cast dust on their heads, and shouting, weeping and mourning, saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her great wealth.' For in one hour is she made desolate.

¹⁹ "Your glory, Israel, is slain on your high places. How the mighty have fallen.

²⁵ How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle. Jonathan is slain on your high places. ²⁶ I grieve for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love for me was a wonder, more than the love of women. ²⁷ How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished."

¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low.

⁴ Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have not travailed, nor brought forth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins."

²⁶ "Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes. Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come on us."

²⁹ Cut off your hair, and throw it away, and take up a lamentation on the bare heights; for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.'"

²⁰ "Yet hear the word of the LORD, you women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation.

¹ "Moreover, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,

¹⁴ Fire is gone out of the rods of its branches, it has devoured its fruit, so that there is in it no strong rod to be a scepter to rule.' This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation."

² "You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre;

² "Son of man, tell the prince of Tyre, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas'; yet you are man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God— ³ look, you are wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that is hidden from you; ⁴ by your wisdom and by your understanding you have gotten yourself riches, and have gotten gold and silver into your treasures; ⁵ by your great wisdom and by your traffic you have increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches"— ⁶ therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Because you have set your heart as the heart of God, ⁷ therefore, look, I will bring strangers on you, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they shall defile your brightness. ⁸ They shall bring you down to the pit; and you shall die the death of those who are slain, in the heart of the seas. ⁹ Will you yet say before him who kills you, 'I am a god'? But you are a man, and not a god, in the hand of him who wounds you. ¹⁰ You shall die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it," says the Lord GOD.'"

¹² "Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and tell him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. ¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared. ¹⁴ You were the anointed cherub who covers: and I set you, so that you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁵ You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. ¹⁶ By the abundance of your traffic they filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I have cast you as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed you, covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. ¹⁷ Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I have cast you to the ground; I have laid you before kings, that they may see you. ¹⁸ By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your traffic, you have profaned your sanctuaries; therefore have I brought forth a fire from the midst of you; it has devoured you, and I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you. ¹⁹ All those who know you among the peoples shall be astonished at you: you have become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being."'"

² "Son of man, take up a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and tell him, 'You were likened to a young lion of the nations: yet you are as a monster in the seas; and you broke out with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers.'

¹⁶ This is the lamentation with which they shall lament; the daughters of the nations shall lament therewith; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they lament therewith,' says the Lord GOD."

¹⁸ How the animals groan. The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep suffer.

⁵ "If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you—wouldn't they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn't they leave some gleaning grapes?

⁴ In that day they will take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, saying, 'We are utterly ruined. My people's possession is divided up. Indeed he takes it from me and assigns our fields to traitors.'"

¹⁵ This is the joyous city that lived carelessly, that said in her heart, "I am, and there is none besides me." How she has become a desolation, a place for animals to lie down in. Everyone who passes by her will hiss, and shake their fists.

⁹ The kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her, will weep and wail over her, when they look at the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ standing far away for the fear of her torment, saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city. For your judgment has come in one hour.'

⁵ When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report of Tyre. ⁶ Pass over to Tarshish. Wail, you inhabitants of the coast. ⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel?

¹⁰ Cultivate your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint any more. ¹¹ He has stretched out his hand over the sea. He has shaken the kingdoms. The LORD has ordered the destruction of Canaan's strongholds. ¹² He said, "You shall rejoice no more, you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, pass over to Kittim. Even there you will have no rest."

⁵ The coastlands have seen, and fear. The farthest parts of the earth tremble. They approach, and come.

²⁸ At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake. ²⁹ All who handled the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand on the land, ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust on their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:

⁷ now therefore, look, the LORD brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks. ⁸ It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, Immanuel.

²⁶ After the sixty-two weeks the Messiah shall be cut off, and shall have nothing. And the people of a ruler who shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and his end shall come with a flood, and until the end there shall be war; desolations are decreed.

⁴⁰ And at the time of the end shall the king of the south attack him. And the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall invade countries, and pass through like a flood.

¹⁵ He said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages.

³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised the LORD."

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³ They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation. ⁴ They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom are their food. ⁵ They are driven out from the midst of men. They cry after them as after a thief; ⁶ So that they dwell in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.

¹³ I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.

¹ [By David.] To you, LORD, I call. My rock, do not be deaf to me; lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.

³ For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol. ⁴ I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help, ⁵ set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.

⁵ The LORD will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you. ¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low. ¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit. ¹⁶ Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, "Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms; ¹⁷ who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities; who did not release his prisoners to their home?" ¹⁸ All the kings of the nations lie in splendor, everyone in his own house. ¹⁹ But you are cast away from your tomb like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain, who are thrust through with the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit; like a dead body trodden under foot.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.

⁶ He has made me to dwell in dark places, like those that have been long dead.

²⁵ "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the nations, then shall they dwell in their own land which I gave to my servant Jacob. ²⁶ They shall dwell securely in it; yes, they shall build houses, and plant vineyards, and shall dwell securely, when I have executed judgments on all those who do them despite all around them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.'"

¹⁸ "Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, to the lower parts of the earth, with those who go down into the pit. ¹⁹ 'Whom do you pass in beauty? Go down, and be laid with the uncircumcised.' ²⁰ They shall fall in the midst of those who are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword; draw her away and all her multitudes.

¹ The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and tell them, even to the shepherds, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves. Shouldn't the shepherds feed the sheep? ³ You eat the fat, and you clothe yourself with the wool, you kill the fatlings; but you do not feed the sheep. ⁴ You haven't strengthened the diseased, neither have you healed that which was sick, neither have you bound up that which was broken, neither have you brought back that which was driven away, neither have you sought that which was lost; but with force and with rigor you have ruled over them. ⁵ They were scattered, because there was no shepherd; and they became food to all the animals of the field, and were scattered. ⁶ My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill: yes, my sheep were scattered on all the surface of the earth; and there was none who searched or sought."' ⁷ "'"Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: ⁸ 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'surely because my sheep became a prey, and my sheep became food to all the animals of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my sheep, but the shepherds fed themselves, and didn't feed my sheep'; ⁹ therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: ¹⁰ Thus says the Lord GOD: 'Look, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my sheep at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the sheep; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; and I will deliver my sheep from their mouth, that they may not be food for them.'" ¹¹ "'For thus says the Lord GOD: "Look, I myself, even I, will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. ¹² As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. ¹³ I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited places of the country. ¹⁴ I will feed them with good pasture; and on the mountains of the height of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie down in a good fold; and on fat pasture shall they feed on the mountains of Israel. ¹⁵ I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down," says the Lord GOD. ¹⁶ "I will seek that which was lost, and will bring back that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but the fat and the strong I will destroy; I will feed them in justice." ¹⁷ "'As for you, O my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: "Look, I judge between sheep and sheep, the rams and the male goats. ¹⁸ Does it seem a small thing to you to have fed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture? And to have drunk of the clear waters, but you must foul the residue with your feet? ¹⁹ As for my sheep, they eat that which you have trodden with your feet, and they drink that which you have fouled with your feet." ²⁰ "'Therefore thus says the Lord GOD to them: "Look, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. ²¹ Because you thrust with side and with shoulder, and push all the diseased with your horns, until you have scattered them abroad; ²² therefore I will save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. ²³ I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. ²⁴ I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them;" I, the LORD, have spoken it. ²⁵ "'I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil animals to cease out of the land; and they shall dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. ²⁶ I will make them and the places around my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in its season; there shall be showers of blessing. ²⁷ The tree of the field shall yield its fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, and they shall be secure in their land; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke, and have delivered them out of the hand of those who made slaves of them. ²⁸ They shall no more be a prey to the nations, neither shall the animals of the earth devour them; but they shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. ²⁹ I will raise up to them a plantation for renown, and they shall be no more consumed with famine in the land, neither bear the shame of the nations any more. ³⁰ They shall know that I, the LORD, their God am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people," says the Lord GOD. ³¹ "You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are men, and I am your God," says the Lord GOD.'"

⁷ "'My holy name will I make known in the midst of my people Israel; neither will I allow my holy name to be profaned any more: and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

²⁵ "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Now will I bring back the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for my holy name. ²⁶ They shall bear their shame, and all their trespasses by which they have trespassed against me, when they shall dwell securely in their land, and none shall make them afraid; ²⁷ when I have brought them back from the peoples, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations. ²⁸ They shall know that I am the LORD their God, in that I caused them to go into captivity among the nations, and have gathered them to their own land; and I will leave none of them any more there; ²⁹ neither will I hide my face any more from them; for I have poured out my Spirit on the house of Israel,' says the Lord GOD."

² Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down.

² He said, "I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.

⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God.

⁸ For thus says the LORD of hosts: 'For honor he has sent me to the nations which plundered you; for he who touches you touches the apple of my eye.

¹⁵ And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to hell.

³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

⁶⁴ and you shall say, 'Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring on her; and they shall be weary.'" Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

¹⁴ I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for the spreading of nets; you shall be built no more: for I the LORD have spoken it,' says the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ "Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: 'Shall not the islands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you? ¹⁶ Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay aside their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit on the ground, and shall tremble every moment, and be astonished at you.

³⁶ The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you are become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being."'"

¹⁹ All those who know you among the peoples shall be astonished at you: you have become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being."'"

²¹ A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, "Thus with violence will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down, and will be found no more at all.
