¹ Abram went up out of Egypt: he, his wife, and all his possessions, and Lot with him, into the Negev. ² Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. ³ He went on his journeys from the Negev even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, ⁴ to the place where he had first built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of God. ⁵ Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. ⁶ The land was not able to support them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to remain together. ⁷ There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in the land at that time. ⁸ Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives. ⁹ Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left." ¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, like the garden of God, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) ¹¹ So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated from each other. ¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the people of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly against God. ¹⁴ And God said to Abram after Lot had departed from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, ¹⁵ for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. ¹⁶ I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, then your offspring also could be counted. ¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it to you." ¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to God.

⁹ And Abram traveled on, continuing toward the Negev. ¹⁰ There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, because the famine was severe in the land. ¹¹ It happened, when he had come near to enter Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, "Look, I know what a beautiful woman you are. ¹² It will happen, when the Egyptians will see you, that they will say, 'This is his wife.' And they will kill me, but they will let you live. ¹³ Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you." ¹⁴ It happened that when Abram had come into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. ¹⁵ The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into the household of Pharaoh. ¹⁶ He dealt well with Abram for her sake, and he aquired sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. ¹⁷ But God plagued Pharaoh and his house with great and grievous plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. ¹⁸ Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, "What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? ¹⁹ Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, look, your wife is before you. Take, and go." ²⁰ Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all his possessions.

¹ Abraham traveled from there toward the land of the Negev, and lived between Kadesh and Shur. He lived as a foreigner in Gerar.

³³ And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.

⁴⁰ So Joshua struck all the land, the hill country, and the Negev, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded.

⁵ They shall divide it into seven portions. Judah shall live in his borders on the south, and the house of Joseph shall live in their borders on the north.

¹⁰ Achish said, "Against whom have you made a raid today?" David would say, "Against the Negev of Judah," or "Against the Negev of Jerahmeel," or "Against the Negev of the Kenizzites."

⁷ and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beersheba.

³⁵ The LORD has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

¹² Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. The LORD blessed him. ¹³ The man became wealthy, and prospered more and more until he became very wealthy.

¹⁸ But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.

³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.

¹⁰ Haven't you made a hedge around him, and around his household, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock have increased in the land.

²¹ "Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. Thereby good shall come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to Shaddai, you shall be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents. ²⁴ Lay your treasure in the dust, the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Shaddai will be your treasure, and precious silver to you.

¹ Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments. ² His descendants will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed. ³ Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever.

⁹ Honor the LORD with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase: ¹⁰ so your storehouses will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

²² The LORD's blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.

³³ But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

⁸ For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come.

⁶ and Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.

⁸ He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar and called on the name of God. ⁹ And Abram traveled on, continuing toward the Negev.

²⁶ And a son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This one began to call on the name of God.

⁷ Then God appeared to Abram and said to him, "I will give this land to your offspring." He built an altar there to God, who appeared to him. ⁸ He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar and called on the name of God.

¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to God.

¹ And God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau." ² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that you have among you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. ³ Let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me wherever I went."

⁸ LORD, I love the habitation of your house, the place where your glory dwells.

¹⁷ He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I do not have room to store my crops?' ¹⁸ He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

⁹ But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as plunge people into ruin and destruction.

¹⁹ And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as you go toward Gerar, to Gaza; as you go toward Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboiim, to Lasha.

¹⁸ On that day God made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Perath: ¹⁹ the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hethites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

²⁵ Abraham complained to Abimelech because of a water well, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.

²⁰ The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." He called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

³⁰ Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and attack me, and I and my household will be destroyed."

¹⁷ The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and drew water for them, and watered their flock.

⁹ Also I said, "The thing that you do is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God, to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?

³ for you are still fleshly. For insofar as there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and living by human standards?

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies,

¹⁴ Do all things without murmurings and disputes, ¹⁵ that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

⁵ Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

¹² that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.

³ For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

¹ Where do conflicts and quarrels among you come from? Do they not come from your passions that war in your members?

¹² having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.

²⁷ Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. ²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur Kasdim. ²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran who was also the father of Iscah. ³⁰ And Sarai was barren. She had no child. ³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abramʼs wife, and with them he set out from Ur Kasdim to go into the land of Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

²⁴ So he sent his brothers off, and as they departed he said to them, "Do not be fearful on the journey."

¹³ He went out the second day, and look, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow?"

¹ A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

¹⁸ A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife.

³ It is an honor for a person to keep away from strife, but every fool quarrels.

²⁶ "The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?'

¹⁰ In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate one to another; outdo one another in showing honor;

⁶ But brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers. ⁷ Actually, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits among yourselves. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

² with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love; ³ being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

¹⁴ Do all things without murmurings and disputes,

⁹ But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another,

¹⁴ Pursue peace with everyone, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord,

¹ Let brotherly love continue.

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, without hypocrisy. ¹⁸ Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

²² Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from a pure heart fervently:

¹⁷ Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

⁸ Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble,

⁸ Above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

⁷ and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.

⁹ He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. ¹⁰ He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. ¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹⁴ We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. He who does not love remains in death. ¹⁵ Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has everlasting life remaining in him. ¹⁶ By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ¹⁷ But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does the love of God remain in him? ¹⁸ Little children, let us not love in word only, neither with the tongue only, but in deed and truth. ¹⁹ And by this we will know that we are of the truth, and persuade our heart before him,

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God, and knows God.

²⁰ If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. ²¹ This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

¹⁵ Abimelech said, "Look, my land is before you. Dwell where it pleases you."

¹⁰ You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live and trade in it, and aquire property in it."

⁷ I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

¹⁸ If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all people.

⁷ Actually, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits among yourselves. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not boast and do not lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

⁸ Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble, ⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but instead blessing; because to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing. ¹⁰ For, "He who would love life, and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. ¹¹ Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it. ¹² For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

⁸ And God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. ⁹ And out of the ground God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. ¹⁰ And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it separated and became the source of four rivers.

⁶ When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit, and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

¹⁷ It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, "Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away." ¹⁸ Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my lord. ¹⁹ See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can't escape to the mountain, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die. ²⁰ See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there--isn't it a little one?--and my life will be saved." ²¹ He said to him, "Look, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. ²² Hurry, escape there, for I can't do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. ²³ The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. ²⁴ Then the LORD rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the sky. ²⁵ He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground. ²⁶ But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. ²⁷ Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before God. ²⁸ He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and he saw; and look, the smoke was rising from the land like smoke from a furnace. ²⁹ It happened, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived. ³⁰ Lot went up out of Zoar, and lived in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave with his two daughters.

¹ Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that look, the place was a place for livestock; ² the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, ³ "Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sibmah, and Nebo, and Beon, ⁴ the land which the LORD struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock." ⁵ They said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; do not bring us over the Jordan." ⁶ Moses said to the people of Gad, and to the people of Reuben, "Shall your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here? ⁷ Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them? ⁸ Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. ⁹ For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. ¹⁰ The LORD's anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying, ¹¹ 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: ¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed the LORD completely.' ¹³ The LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. ¹⁴ "Look, you have risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. ¹⁵ For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people." ¹⁶ They came near to him, and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones: ¹⁷ but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁸ We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. ¹⁹ For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward." ²⁰ Moses said to them, "If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before the LORD to the war, ²¹ and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him, ²² and the land is subdued before the LORD; then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless towards the LORD, and towards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the LORD. ²³ "But if you will not do so, look, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out. ²⁴ Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth." ²⁵ The people of Gad and the people of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, "Your servants will do as my lord commands. ²⁶ Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock, shall be there in the cities of Gilead; ²⁷ but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says." ²⁸ So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral houses of the tribes of the children of Israel. ²⁹ Moses said to them, "If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you; then you are to give them the land of Gilead for a possession. ³⁰ But if they will not pass over with you armed to battle before the LORD, then you are to bring over their children and their wives and their flocks before you into the land of Canaan, and they are to have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." ³¹ The people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, saying, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do. ³² We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ Moses gave to them, even to the people of Gad, and to the people of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The people of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep. ³⁷ The people of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built. ³⁹ The descendants of Makir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰ Moses gave Gilead to Makir the son of Manasseh; and he lived in it. ⁴¹ Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

³ and the Negev, and the Plain of the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, to Zoar.

⁴⁶ The king cast them in the plain of the Jordan, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zarethan.

³⁴ and a fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

⁵ My heart cries out for Moab. Her Nazirites flee to Zoar, to Eglath Shelishiyah; for they go up by the ascent of Luhith with weeping; for in the way of Horonaim, they raise up a cry of destruction.

³ For the LORD has comforted Zion; he has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found in it, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

³⁴ From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, even to Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, to Eglath Shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolate.

¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared.

⁸ The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the fir trees were not like its boughs, and the plane trees were not as its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like it in its beauty.

³ A fire devours before them, and behind them, a flame burns. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them, a desolate wilderness. Yes, and no one has escaped them.

¹⁵ Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not the Father's, but is the world's.

⁹ Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

¹⁴ And God said to Abram after Lot had departed from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

¹⁷ It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, "Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away."

³ As for the holy ones who are in the land, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

⁶³ I am a friend of all those who fear you, of those who observe your precepts.

¹⁰ Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend. Do not go to your brother's house in the day of your disaster: better is a neighbor who is near than a distant brother.

²⁵ not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

¹² They also took Lot, Abramʼs brotherʼs son, who lived in Sodom, and his possessions, and departed.

¹ The two angels came to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them. He bowed himself with his face to the earth,

²⁵ He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.

²⁹ It happened, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.

³³ Do not be deceived. "Bad company corrupts good morals."

⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds):

¹¹ The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

⁹ He was a mighty hunter before God. Therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before God."

¹⁶ In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."

²⁰ The LORD said, "Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is so grievous,

⁴ But before they could lie down to sleep, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. ⁵ They called to Lot, and said to him, "Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them." ⁶ Lot went out to them at the entrance, and shut the door behind him. ⁷ He said, "Please, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. ⁸ Look, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only do not do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof." ⁹ They said, "Stand back." They said, "This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them." They pressed hard on the man Lot, and drew near to break the door. ¹⁰ But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. ¹¹ They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they were unable to find the door.

⁷ Now Er, Judahʼs firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, so God killed him.

¹⁸ and the LORD sent you on a journey, and said to you, 'Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until you have destroyed them.'

⁶ He made his son to pass through the fire, and practiced sorcery, and practiced divination, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

⁹ Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a few survivors, we would have been as Sodom, and we would have been like Gomorrah.

⁸ For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen; because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. ⁹ The look of their faces testify against them. They parade their sin like Sodom. They do not hide it. Woe to their soul. For they have brought disaster upon themselves.

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places so that I shall not see him?' says the LORD. 'Do I not fill heaven and earth?' says the LORD.

⁴⁶ Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters; and your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. ⁴⁷ Yet have you not walked in their ways, nor done after their abominations; but, as if that were a very little thing, you were more corrupt than they in all your ways. ⁴⁸ As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters. ⁴⁹ "'Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. ⁵⁰ They were haughty, and committed abomination before me. So I took them away, as you have seen.

¹⁰ And it happened as he sat in the house, look, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.

¹³ But you go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

²³ And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day. ²⁴ But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you."

²⁴ So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner."

³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.

²⁷ Likewise also the men, giving up natural relations with women, burned in their lust toward one another, men with men, committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error.

¹³ There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

¹⁰ but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to blaspheme the glories;

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, having, in the same way as these, given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of everlasting fire.

¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, like the garden of God, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

¹⁴ Your descendants will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And through you and through your descendants will all the families of the earth be blessed.

²⁷ Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes: for you shall not go over this Jordan.

¹⁸ Lift up your eyes all around, and see: all these gather themselves together, and come to you. As I live," says the LORD, "you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament, and dress yourself with them, like a bride.

⁴ "Lift up your eyes all around, and see: they all gather themselves together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters shall be carried in the arms.

⁷ Then God appeared to Abram and said to him, "I will give this land to your offspring." He built an altar there to God, who appeared to him.

¹⁸ On that day God made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Perath:

⁷ I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. ⁸ I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God."

¹⁸ seeing that Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him?

⁷ Now the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, 'I will give this land to your offspring' -- he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

³ Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For to you, and to your descendants, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. ⁴ I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the sky, and will give to your descendants all these lands, and by your descendants will all the nations of the earth be blessed,

⁴ and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your descendants with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham."

¹³ And look, the LORD stood above it, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your grandfather, and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying I will give to you and to your descendants.

¹² The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you."

⁴ and said to me, 'Look, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession.'

¹ The LORD spoke to Moses, "Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.'

² "Command the children of Israel, and tell them, 'When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders),

¹² and the border shall go down to the Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders around it.'" ¹³ Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, "This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe; ¹⁴ for the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their fathers' houses, and the tribe of the people of Gad according to their fathers' houses, have received, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received, their inheritance: ¹⁵ the two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise." ¹⁶ The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁷ "These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. ¹⁸ You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance. ¹⁹ These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ²⁰ Of the tribe of the people of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. ²¹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. ²² Of the tribe of the people of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. ²³ Of the people of Joseph: of the tribe of the people of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod. ²⁴ Of the tribe of the people of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. ²⁵ Of the tribe of the people of Zebulun a prince, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. ²⁶ Of the tribe of the people of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. ²⁷ Of the tribe of the people of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. ²⁸ Of the tribe of the people of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud." ²⁹ These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

² that you shall take of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you shall bring in from your land that the LORD your God gives you; and you shall put it in a basket, and shall go to the place which the LORD your God shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there. ³ You shall come to the priest who shall be in those days, and tell him, "I profess this day to the LORD my God, that I have come into the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us." ⁴ The priest shall take the basket out of your hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God.

⁴ The LORD said to him, "This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there."

⁷ Did you not, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?

⁷ You are the LORD, the God who chose Abram, and brought him out of Ur Kasdim, and gave him the name of Abraham, ⁸ and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hethite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his descendants, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.

²² For such as are blessed by him shall inherit the land. Those who are cursed by him shall be cut off.

²⁹ The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever.

⁹ the covenant which he made with Abraham, his oath to Isaac, ¹⁰ and confirmed the same to Jacob for a statute; to Israel for an everlasting covenant, ¹¹ saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;" ¹² when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.

¹ Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments. ² His descendants will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

¹⁸ Your holy people possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down your sanctuary.

⁵ Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth.

⁵ He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him, when he still had no child.

² And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great. And you will be a blessing. ³ And I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and through you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

⁵ And he brought him outside, and said, "Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So will your descendants be."

⁶ I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you. Kings will come out of you.

¹⁶ And I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. And I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."

²⁰ As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Look, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

¹³ And I will also make a great nation of the son of the slave woman, because he is your offspring."

¹⁷ I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of the sky, and like the sand which is on the seashore; and your offspring will possess the gate of their enemies.

¹ Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah. ² She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. ³ Jokshan became the father of Sheba, and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. ⁴ The sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. ⁵ And Abraham gave all that he owned to his son Isaac, ⁶ and to the sons of Abraham's secondary wives, Abraham gave gifts. He sent them away from Isaac his son, while he was still living, eastward, to the east country. ⁷ This was the length of Abrahamʼs life: one hundred seventy-five years. ⁸ Abraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man and satisfied, and was gathered to his people. ⁹ Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hethite, which is near Mamre, ¹⁰ the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. Abraham was buried there with Sarah, his wife. ¹¹ It happened after the death of Abraham that God blessed Isaac, his son. Isaac lived by Beer Lahai Roi. ¹² Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, bore to Abraham. ¹³ These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to the order of their birth: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, ¹⁴ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, ¹⁵ Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. ¹⁶ These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments: twelve princes, according to their clans. ¹⁷ These are the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. ¹⁸ They lived from Havilah to Shur, which is near Egypt, all the way to Asshur. He settled near all his kinsmen. ¹⁹ These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham became the father of Isaac. ²⁰ Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan Aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. ²¹ Isaac prayed for his wife, because she was barren. And God was moved by his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. ²² The children struggled together within her. She said, "If all is well, why am I like this?" She went to inquire of God. ²³ And he said to her, "Two nations are in your womb. Two peoples will be separated from your body. The one people will be stronger than the other people. The elder will serve the younger." ²⁴ When the time came for her to give birth, look, there were twins in her womb. ²⁵ The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau. ²⁶ After that, his brother came out, and his hand had hold on Esau's heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. ²⁷ The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. ²⁸ And Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for wild animals, but Rebekah loved Jacob. ²⁹ Now Jacob was cooking stew, and Esau came in from the field, and he was famished. ³⁰ Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. ³¹ Jacob said, "First, sell me your birthright." ³² Esau said, "Look, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?" ³³ Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to him, and he sold his birthright to Jacob. ³⁴ Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils. He ate and drank, rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

⁴ I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the sky, and will give to your descendants all these lands, and by your descendants will all the nations of the earth be blessed,

³ May El Shaddai bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples,

¹² You said, 'I will surely do you good and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which canʼt be counted because there are so many.'"

¹¹ And God said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.

¹ Now these are the generations of Esau (that is, Edom). ² Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon, the Hethite; and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, the Hivite; ³ and Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebaioth. ⁴ Adah bore to Esau Eliphaz. Basemath bore Reuel. ⁵ Oholibamah bore Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau, who were born to him in the land of Canaan. ⁶ Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the people of his household, with his livestock, all his animals, and all of the property he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went out from the land of Canaan away from the presence of his brother Jacob. ⁷ For their possessions were too great for them to remain together, and the land in which they were traveling could not support them because of their livestock. ⁸ And Esau (also known as Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir. ⁹ These are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir: ¹⁰ these are the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau; and Reuel, the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau. ¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz. ¹² Timna was the secondary wife to Eliphaz, Esauʼs son; and she bore to Eliphaz Amalek. These are the sons of Adah, Esauʼs wife. ¹³ These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esauʼs wife. ¹⁴ These were the sons of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon, Esauʼs wife: she bore to Esau Jeush, and Jalam, and Korah. ¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, ¹⁶ chief Korah, chief Gatam, chief Amalek: these are the chiefs who came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. ¹⁷ These are the sons of Reuel, Esau's son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah: these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife. ¹⁸ These are the sons of Oholibamah, Esau's wife: chief Jeush, chief Jalam, chief Korah: these are the chiefs who came of Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife. ¹⁹ These are the sons of Esau (also known as Edom), and these are their chiefs. ²⁰ These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, ²¹ and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. ²² The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. Lotanʼs sister was Timna. ²³ These are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ These are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who found the hot springs in the desert as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon. ²⁵ These are the sons of Anah: Dishon, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ These are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah, ³⁰ chief Dishon, chief Ezer, and chief Dishan: these are the chiefs who came of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir. ³¹ These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the children of Israel. ³² Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom. The name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³ When Bela died, and Jobab, the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. ³⁴ And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ³⁵ And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad who struck Midian in the field of Moab reigned in his place. The name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. ³⁷ And Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth-on-the-River reigned in his place. ³⁸ And Shaul died, and Baal Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. ³⁹ And Baal Hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadad reigned in his place. The name of his city was Pau. His wifeʼs name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab. ⁴⁰ These are the names of the chiefs who came from Esau, according to their families, according to their places, and by their names: chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth, ⁴¹ chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, ⁴² chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, ⁴³ chief Magdiel, and chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they possessed. This is Esau the father of Edom.

³ He said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.

⁷ The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'"

¹⁰ Who can count the dust of Jacob, and who has numbered the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous. Let my last end be like his."

¹⁰ The LORD your God has multiplied you, and look, you are this day as the stars of the sky for multitude.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that Midian, Amalek, and the Kedemites would come up against them.

⁵ For they came up with their livestock and their tents and their camels. They would come in like locusts in number, and they were innumerable. And they came into the land to ravage it.

⁸ Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can't be numbered nor counted for multitude.

²⁰ Judah and Israel were many as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and making merry.

⁵ Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew sword: and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew sword.

²³ But David did not take the number of them from twenty years old and under, because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky.

¹⁴ This was the numbering of them according to their fathers' houses: Of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valor three hundred thousand; ¹⁵ and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand; ¹⁶ and next to him Amasiah the son of Zikri, who willingly offered himself to the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor. ¹⁷ Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; ¹⁸ and next to him Jehozabad and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready prepared for war.

¹⁸ But would that you had listened to my commandments. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea. ¹⁹ Your descendants would have been as the sand, and the offspring of your body like its grains; his name not be cut off nor destroyed from before me.

²² As the host of heaven can't be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured; so will I multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levites who minister to me.'"

¹⁶ For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the descendants, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. ¹⁷ As it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations." This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were. ¹⁸ Who hoped in spite of hopeless circumstances, with the result that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, "so will your descendants be."

¹² Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

⁹ After these things I looked, and suddenly there was a great multitude, which no one could number, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.

¹⁵ for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.

¹⁷ Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way by the Negev, and go up into the hill country: ¹⁸ and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; ¹⁹ and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; ²⁰ and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood in it, or not. Be courageous, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes." ²¹ So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to Lebo Hamath. ²² They went up by the Negev, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) ²³ They came to the Valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes on it, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. ²⁴ That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

²⁰ Noah built an altar to God, and took of every clean animal, and of every clean flying creature, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

⁴ to the place where he had first built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of God.

¹³ One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. Now he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were allies of Abram.

¹ And God appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance to the tent in the heat of the day.

² Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

²⁷ So Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre in Kiriath Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

¹⁴ So he said to him, "Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers and well with the flock, and report back to me." So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

¹³ Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.

⁸ I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

⁸ I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.
