¹ "My soul is weary of my life. I will give free course to my complaint. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. ² I will tell God, 'Do not condemn me. Show me why you contend with me. ³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked? ⁴ Do you have eyes of flesh? Or do you see as man sees? ⁵ Are your days as the days of mortals, or your years as man's years, ⁶ that you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin? ⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand. ⁸ "'Your hands have framed me and fashioned me altogether, yet you destroy me. ⁹ Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again? ¹⁰ Haven't you poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. ¹² You have granted me life and loving kindness. Your visitation has preserved my spirit. ¹³ Yet you hid these things in your heart. I know that this is with you: ¹⁴ if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still shall not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction. ¹⁶ And if I lift myself up, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me. ¹⁸ "'Why, then, have you brought me forth out of the womb? I wish I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me. ¹⁹ I should have been as though I had not been. I should have been carried from the womb to the grave. ²⁰ Aren't my days few? Cease then. Leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort, ²¹ before I go where I shall not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, where the light is as midnight.'"

¹⁵ If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and do not let me see my wretchedness."

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."

²⁰ "Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul, ²¹ Who long for death, but it doesn't come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures, ²² who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, whom God has hedged in?

¹⁵ But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.

²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword.

² "Oh that my anguish were weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances. ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas, therefore have my words been rash. ⁴ For the arrows of Shaddai are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁸ "Oh that I might have my request, that God would grant the thing that I long for, ⁹ even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off.

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, seeing that the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?

¹¹ "Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁶ I loathe my life. I do not want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

²¹ I am blameless. I do not regard myself. I despise my life.

This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face. ⁹ He has torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me. ¹⁰ They have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to the ungodly, and casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target. ¹³ His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs on me like a giant. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and have thrust my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids.

⁴ If it is true that I have erred, my error remains with myself.

² "Listen diligently to my speech. Let this be your consolation. ³ Allow me, and I also will speak; After I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? Why shouldn't I be impatient?

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me to my destruction in the heat of summer. Selah. ⁵ I acknowledged my sin to you. I did not hide my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹⁵ What will I say? He has both spoken to me, and himself has done it. I will walk carefully all my years because of the anguish of my soul.

¹⁷ Look, for peace I had great anguish, but you have in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

³ Therefore now, LORD, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live."

⁸ It happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."

⁵ If you want to seek God diligently, make your petition to Shaddai. ⁶ If you were pure and upright, surely now he would awaken for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

²⁹ I shall be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain?

³¹ "For has any said to God, 'I am guilty, but I will not offend any more. ³² Teach me that which I do not see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more'?

² Do not enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

⁴⁰ Let us examine and search our ways, and return to the LORD. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens. ⁴² We have transgressed and have rebelled, and you have not forgiven.

¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned. ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes grow dim.

¹ There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

³¹ For if we discerned ourselves, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged, we are punished by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

²⁰ "Look, God will not cast away a blameless man, neither will he uphold the evildoers.

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?

¹⁵ You would call, and I would answer you. You would have a desire to the work of your hands.

¹⁶ Look, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

⁵ For Job has said, 'I am righteous, God has taken away my right: ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,

¹⁸ Who says to a king, 'Vile.' or to nobles, 'Wicked.'? ¹⁹ Who doesn't respect the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

⁷ He doesn't withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne, he sets them forever, and they are exalted. ⁸ If they are bound in fetters, and are taken in the cords of afflictions, ⁹ then he shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.

¹⁷ "But you are full of the judgment of the wicked. Judgment and justice take hold of you. ¹⁸ Do not let riches entice you to wrath, neither let the great size of a bribe turn you aside.

² "Shall he who argues contend with Shaddai? He who argues with God, let him answer it."

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

³³ For the LORD hears the needy, and doesn't despise his captive people.

⁸ The LORD will fulfill that which concerns me; your loving kindness, LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the works of your own hands.

⁸ But now, LORD, you are our Father, and we are clay, and you are our potter; and we all are the work of your hands.

¹ You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would reason the cause with you: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yes, they have taken root; they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their heart. ³ But you, LORD, know me; you see me, and try my heart toward you: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

² He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light. ³ Surely against me he turns his hand again and again all the day. ⁴ My flesh and my skin he has made old; he has broken my bones. ⁵ He has built against me, and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. ⁶ He has made me to dwell in dark places, like those that have been long dead. ⁷ He has walled me in, so I can't escape; he has made my chains heavy. ⁸ Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer. ⁹ He has walled up my ways with cut stone; he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in hiding. ¹¹ He has obstructed my path, and torn me in pieces; he has made me desolate. ¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to pierce my inward parts. ¹⁴ I have become a laughingstock to all peoples, and their song all the day. ¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness, he has given me in full measure wormwood. ¹⁶ He has also broken my teeth with gravel; he has pressed me down in the dust. ¹⁷ You have removed my soul far away from peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. ¹⁸ And I said, "My strength and my hope has perished from the LORD."

¹⁹ Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For humans do not see as God sees, for humans look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart."

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

¹⁵ He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of people, but God knows your hearts. For that which is exalted among people is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹⁴ His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire.

²⁶ Look, God is great, and we do not know him. The number of his years is unsearchable.

² Before the mountains were brought forth, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. ³ You turn man to destruction, saying, "Return, you descendants of Adam." ⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.

¹² But you, LORD, will abide forever; your renown endures to all generations.

²⁴ I said, "My God, do not take me away in the midst of my days. Your years are throughout all generations. ²⁵ In the beginning, LORD, you established the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the works of your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but you remain; and they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed. ²⁷ But you are the same. Your years will have no end.

¹² As a cloak, you will roll them up, and like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will have no end."

⁸ But do not forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

¹⁴ if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still shall not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction. ¹⁶ And if I lift myself up, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me.

¹⁶ But now you number my steps. Do you not watch over my sin?

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.

²¹ won't God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

³⁴ Also the blood of the souls of the innocent poor is found in your skirts. You did not find them breaking in; but it is because of all these things.

¹² It will happen at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are settled on their dregs, who say in their heart, "The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil."

²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew everyone, ²⁵ and because he did not need anyone to testify concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one will get his praise from God.

³⁹ "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god besides me. I kill, and I make alive. I wound, and I heal; and there is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come forth like gold.

¹³ But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? What his soul desires, even that he does. ¹⁴ For he performs that which is appointed for me. Many such things are with him.

⁶ (let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity);

¹⁴ What then shall I do when God rises up? When he visits, what shall I answer him?

³⁵ oh that I had one to hear me. (look, here is my signature, let Shaddai answer me); let the accuser write my indictment.

⁷ It was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

³ LORD, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands,

⁸ The LORD administers judgment to the peoples. Judge me, LORD, according to my righteousness, and to my integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. The righteous God tests hearts and minds.

³ You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing. I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

¹ [By David.] Judge me, LORD, for I have walked in my integrity. I have trusted also in LORD without wavering. ² Examine me, LORD, and prove me. Try my heart and my mind. ³ For your loving kindness is before my eyes. I have walked in your truth. ⁴ I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁵ Now if you are ready whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music to fall down and worship the image which I have made, well: but if you do not worship, you shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands?"

¹⁰ Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one will deliver her out of my hand.

²⁸ I give everlasting life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one."

¹² For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁰ You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.

⁶ God was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was grieved in his heart. ⁷ God said, "I will destroy humankind whom I have created from the face of the earth; humankind, along with animals, crawling creatures, and flying creatures of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them."

⁷³ YOD Your hands have made me and formed me. Give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments.

⁷ everyone who is called by my name, and whom I have created for my glory, whom I have formed, yes, whom I have made.'"

³ Then I went down to the potter's house, and look, he was making a work on the wheels. ⁴ When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. ⁵ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ⁶ "'House of Israel, can't I do with you as this potter?' says the LORD. 'Look, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.' ⁷ At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; ⁸ if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I thought to do to them. ⁹ At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; ¹⁰ if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.

⁷ And God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

⁷ Oh remember that my life is a breath. My eye shall no more see good.

¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'my sister;'

¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; and you have brought me into the dust of death.

⁶ LORD, remember your tender mercies and your loving kindness, for they are from old times. ⁷ Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. Remember me according to your loving kindness, for your goodness' sake, LORD.

¹⁸ Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is. Have you created the descendants of Adam for no reason?

³ You turn man to destruction, saying, "Return, you descendants of Adam."

⁴ Remember me, LORD, with the favor that you show to your people. Visit me with your salvation,

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

⁹ Woe to him who strives with his Maker, a clay pot among the clay pots of the earth. Shall the clay ask him who fashions it, 'What are you making?' or your work, 'He has no hands?'

⁶ "'House of Israel, can't I do with you as this potter?' says the LORD. 'Look, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.'

²¹ Or hasn't the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel for honor, and another for dishonor?

¹⁴ I will give thanks to you, for I am awesomely and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and my soul knows that very well. ¹⁵ My frame wasn't hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.

¹⁷ He moves his tail like a cedar. The sinews of his thighs are knit together. ¹⁸ His bones are like tubes of bronze. His limbs are like bars of iron.

⁴ Again he said to me, "Prophesy over these bones, and tell them, 'You dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.' ⁵ Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: 'Look, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. ⁶ I will lay sinews on you, and will bring up flesh on you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.'" ⁷ So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and look, an earthquake; and the bones came together, bone to its bone. ⁸ I saw, and, look, there were sinews on them, and flesh came up, and skin covered them above; but there was no breath in them.

² For truly in this we groan, longing to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, ³ since, after we have put it on, we will not be found naked.

¹⁶ from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

¹⁹ See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can't escape to the mountain, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die.

⁴ The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of Shaddai gives me life.

²⁵ Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

²⁵ neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.

²⁸ 'For in him we live, and move, and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also his offspring.'

⁹ He works to the north, but I can't see him. He turns south, but I can't catch a glimpse of him.

¹³ But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? What his soul desires, even that he does.

⁶ For there is a time and procedure for every purpose, although the misery of man is heavy on him. ⁷ For he doesn't know that which will be; for who can tell him how it will be?

⁷ I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am the LORD, who does all these things.

¹⁵ Most certainly you are a God who hid yourself, God of Israel, the Savior.'"

⁹ Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me; ¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure; ¹¹ calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country; yes, I have spoken, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed, I will also do it.

³⁷ Who can speak a thing and have it come to pass, unless the LORD has commanded it?

³³ Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out.

¹¹ according to the purpose of the ages which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord;

⁷ keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, upon the third and upon the fourth [generation]."

¹⁸ 'The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation].'

²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I shall not be."

²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth: ²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,

³ If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?

⁷ The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

¹² Look, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, 'What are you doing?'

¹⁵ Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn't answer him. I would make petition to my judge.

²⁰ Though I am righteous, my own mouth shall condemn me. Though I am blameless, it shall prove me perverse. ²¹ I am blameless. I do not regard myself. I despise my life.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

⁶ When I remember, I am troubled. Horror takes hold of my flesh.

¹⁵ Therefore I am terrified at his presence. When I consider, I am afraid of him.

⁷ "Let my enemy be as the wicked. Let him who rises up against me be as the unrighteous.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be turned back to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God.

¹⁵³ RESH. Consider my affliction, and deliver me, for I do not forget your Law.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

⁵ Then I said, "Woe is me. For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

⁵ You meet him who rejoices and works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Look, you were angry, and we sinned. We have been in sin for a long time; and shall we be saved? ⁶ For we have all become as one who is unclean, and all our righteousness is as a polluted garment: and we all fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

²⁰ See, LORD, for I am in distress; my stomach churns; my heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled. Outside the sword bereaves, in the house it is like death.

¹ Remember, LORD, what has come on us. Look, and see our disgrace. ² Our inheritance is turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. ³ We are orphans and fatherless. Our mothers are like widows. ⁴ We have to pay for a drink of water; our wood is sold to us. ⁵ Our pursuers are on our necks; we are weary, and have no rest. ⁶ We have submitted to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians, to get enough bread. ⁷ Our fathers sinned, and are no more; but we have borne their iniquities. ⁸ Servants rule over us: There is none to deliver us out of their hand. ⁹ We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness. ¹⁰ Our skin is hot like an oven, because of the burning heat of famine. ¹¹ They raped the women in Zion, the virgins in the cities of Judah. ¹² Princes were hung by their hands; elders were shown no respect. ¹³ The young men grind at the mill; the boys stagger under loads of wood. ¹⁴ The elders have gone from the gate, the young men from their music. ¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased; our dancing is turned into mourning. ¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned. ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes grow dim. ¹⁸ For the mountain of Zion, which is desolate; the foxes walk on it. ¹⁹ But you, LORD, abide forever; your throne is from generation to generation. ²⁰ Why do you keep on forgetting us? Why do you forsake us so long? ²¹ Restore us to you, LORD, and we shall be restored; renew our days as in former times, ²² unless you have completely rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.

¹⁸ Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn't serve him.

¹⁰ Even so you also, when you have done all the things that are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.'"

⁸ But to those who are self-seeking, and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness -- wrath and anger, ⁹ affliction and distress, on every human being who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hasn't sent me. ³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised the LORD."

⁵⁹ then the LORD will make your plagues extraordinary, and the plagues of your descendants, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and severe sicknesses, and of long continuance.

⁹ who does great things that can't be fathomed, marvelous things without number;

¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

¹⁰ He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in hiding.

⁷ Therefore I am like a lion to them. Like a leopard, I will lurk by the path. ⁸ I will meet them like a bear that is bereaved of her cubs, and will tear the covering of their heart. There I will devour them like a lioness. The wild animal will tear them.

⁸ The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken. Who can but prophesy?

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and Shaddai has afflicted me?"

⁸ You have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that I can't pass, and has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has broken me down on every side, and I am gone. My hope he has plucked up like a tree. ¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me. He counts me among his adversaries.

¹⁹ God, who is enthroned forever, will hear, and humble them. Selah. They never change, who do not fear God.

¹¹ 'Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed.

¹⁰ because it did not shut up the doors of my mother's womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes. ¹¹ "Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when my mother bore me?

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail. They shall have no way to flee. Their hope shall be the giving up of the spirit."

¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?

¹⁰ "Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth. I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet everyone of them curses me."

¹⁴ Cursed is the day in which I was born: do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying, A boy is born to you; making him very glad. ¹⁶ Let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and did not repent: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; ¹⁷ because he did not kill me from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. ¹⁸ Why came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

²⁴ The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

⁸ Let them be like a snail which melts and passes away, like the stillborn child, who has not seen the sun.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ Oh remember that my life is a breath. My eye shall no more see good.

¹⁶ I loathe my life. I do not want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath. ¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him, ¹⁸ that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment? ¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I shall not be."

⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.)

²⁵ "Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away, they see no good, ²⁶ They have passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.

²¹ withdraw your hand far from me; and do not let your terror make me afraid.

¹ "Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁵ Look, you have made my days handbreadths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath." Selah.

¹³ Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away, and exist no more."

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.

²³ But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."

¹⁴ For we must die, and are as water split on the ground, which can't be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let the blackness of the day terrify it.

¹³ For now should I have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him who sees me shall see me no more. Your eyes shall be on me, but I shall not be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and doesn't rise. Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep. ¹³ "Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me. ¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, until my release should come.

²² For when a few years have come, I shall go the way from where I shall not return.

⁴ Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.

¹¹ Is your loving kindness declared in the grave? Or your faithfulness in Destruction? ¹² Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹¹ I said, "I won't see the LORD in the land of the living. I will not look on humankind any longer with the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ Neither did they say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man lived?'

²² There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where evildoers may hide themselves.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

¹⁹ Though you have crushed us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

¹² Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he causes darkness, and before your feet stumble on the dark mountains, and, while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it gross darkness.

²⁶ Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'
