¹ "My spirit is consumed. My days are extinct, And the grave is ready for me. ² Surely there are mockers with me. My eye dwells on their provocation. ³ "Now give a pledge, be collateral for me with yourself. Who is there who will strike hands with me? ⁴ For you have hidden their heart from understanding, Therefore you shall not exalt them. ⁵ He who denounces his friends for a prey, Even the eyes of his children shall fail. ⁶ "But he has made me a byword of the people. They spit in my face. ⁷ My eye also is dim by reason of sorrow. All my members are as a shadow. ⁸ Upright men shall be astonished at this. The innocent shall stir up himself against the godless. ⁹ Yet shall the righteous hold on his way. He who has clean hands shall grow stronger and stronger. ¹⁰ But as for you all, come on now again; I shall not find a wise man among you. ¹¹ My days are past, my plans are broken off, as are the thoughts of my heart. ¹² They change the night into day, saying 'The light is near' in the presence of darkness. ¹³ If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness, ¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'my sister;' ¹⁵ where then is my hope? As for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ Shall it go down with me to the gates of Sheol, or descend together into the dust?"

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?

¹³ If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness, ¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'my sister;'

¹⁷ My breath is offensive to my wife. I am loathsome to the children of my own mother.

¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, to four generations.

³ For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol. ⁴ I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help, ⁵ set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.

¹⁰ I said, "In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the residue of my years." ¹¹ I said, "I won't see the LORD in the land of the living. I will not look on humankind any longer with the inhabitants of the world. ¹² My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd's tent. I have rolled up, like a weaver, my life. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me. ¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me. ¹⁴ I chip like a swallow or a thrush. I moan like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward.LORD, I am oppressed. Be my security.”

¹⁶ For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls who I have made.

⁶ Her rival taunted her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she taunted her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

⁴ I am like one who is a joke to his neighbor, I, who called on God, and he answered. The just, the blameless man is a joke.

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? Or as one deceives a man, will you deceive him?

²⁰ My friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God,

³ Allow me, and I also will speak; After I have spoken, mock on.

¹³ His soul shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the land.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother. ¹⁵ But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I did not know it. They tore at me, and did not cease. ¹⁶ When I tripped, they mocked me relentlessly; they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹ He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of Shaddai.

³⁹ Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." ⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, and the elders, said, ⁴² "He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" ⁴⁴ The robbers also who were crucified with him insulted him in the same way.

⁹ I will be collateral for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever,

³² For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.'

³³ There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both.

¹²² Ensure your servant's well-being. Do not let the proud oppress me.

¹¹ so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

¹⁵ He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.

¹⁶ Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.

²⁶ Do not be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.

¹⁴ I chip like a swallow or a thrush. I moan like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward.LORD, I am oppressed. Be my security.”

²² Accordingly Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.

³¹ And it had been told to David, saying, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." David said, "LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."

¹⁴ Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil on Absalom.

¹⁶ It happened, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, "Have we made you one of the king's counselors? Stop. Why should you be struck down?" Then the prophet stopped, and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel."

¹⁴ The LORD has mixed a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in all of its works, like a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

²⁵ At that time, Jesus answered, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children.

¹¹ And answering, he said to them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but it is not given to them.

⁸ According as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.

²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

⁵ you must not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation] of those who hate me,

⁶⁵ Among these nations you shall find no ease, and there shall be no rest for the sole of your foot: but the LORD will give you there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and pining of soul;

¹² Notwithstanding I will not do it in your days, for David your father's sake; but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail. They shall have no way to flee. Their hope shall be the giving up of the spirit."

²¹ Please do not let me respect any man's person, neither will I give flattering titles to any man. ²² For I do not know how to give flattering titles; or else my Maker would soon take me away.

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart. ³ May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,

¹⁹ He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore do not keep company with him who opens wide his lips.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

¹⁷ Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

⁵ For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed (God is witness),

²⁷ Why did you flee in secret and deceive me, and not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with joy and singing, with a tambourine and with a lyre.

⁷ then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have made holy for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

⁹ "Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword to them.

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹² The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

⁸ You have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.

¹⁶ My face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids.

⁷ My eye wastes away because of grief. It grows old because of all my adversaries.

⁹ Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones waste away.

²³ I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust.

¹² For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?

¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes grow dim.

¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad. The innocent ridicule them,

³⁰ that the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people.

¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence, ¹⁴ For all day long have I been plagued, and punished every morning. ¹⁵ If I had said, "I will speak thus;" look, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, do not marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

¹³ You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously, and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he,

⁴⁶ Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, "It was necessary that God's word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, look, we turn to the non-Jewish people.

³³ Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out.

⁵ Did not he tell me, 'She is my sister?' She, even she herself, said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands have I done this."

³⁰ He will even deliver him who is not innocent. Yes, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."

⁴ He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, so I will go about your altar, LORD;

¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence,

⁷ They go from strength to strength. Everyone of them appears before God in Zion.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like a shining light, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.

¹⁶ A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, but the fool is arrogant and reckless.

¹⁵ When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.

⁸ And a highway will be there, and it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it will be for those who walk in the Way. Wicked fools will not go there. ⁹ No lion will be there, nor will any ravenous animal go up on it. They will not be found there; but the redeemed will walk there. ¹⁰ The LORD's ransomed ones will return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away."

²⁹ He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. ³⁰ Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; ³¹ But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

² Now when they saw that some of his disciples ate bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.

⁹ He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. ¹⁰ Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

⁵ who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us.

²⁹ Please return. Let there be no injustice. Yes, return again. My cause is righteous.

² "No doubt, but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

⁹ What do you know, that we do not know? What do you understand, which is not in us?

⁴ For you have hidden their heart from understanding, Therefore you shall not exalt them.

⁹ It is not the great who are wise, nor the aged who understand justice.

⁷ It was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹⁸ Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn't serve him.

⁵ I say this to move you to shame. Is there not even one wise person among you who would be able to decide between a brother and his brother?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

²⁵ "Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away, they see no good, ²⁶ They have passed away as the swift ships, as the eagle that swoops on the prey.

⁹ A man's heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

²¹ There are many plans in a man's heart, but the LORD's counsel will prevail.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand: for God is with us."

¹⁰ I said, "In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the residue of my years."

³⁷ Who can speak a thing and have it come to pass, unless the LORD has commanded it?

¹³ Now I do not desire to have you unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you, and was hindered so far, that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among the other non-Jewish people.

¹⁵ In this confidence, I was determined to come first to you, that you might have a second benefit; ¹⁶ and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and to be sent forward by you on my journey to Judea. ¹⁷ When I therefore was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the "Yes, yes" and the "No, no?"

¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow let us go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit." ¹⁴ Whereas you do not know what tomorrow will be like. What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. ¹⁵ For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that."

⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, "I wish it were evening." and at evening you shall say, "I wish it were morning." for the fear of your heart which you shall fear, and for the sight of your eyes which you shall see.

³ so am I made to possess months of misery, wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴ When I lie down, I say, 'When shall I arise, and the night be gone?' I toss and turn until the dawning of the day.

¹³ When I say, 'My bed shall comfort me. My couch shall ease my complaint;' ¹⁴ then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹⁴ The murderer rises with the light. He kills the poor and needy. In the night he is like a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, 'No eye shall see me.' He disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses. They shut themselves up in the daytime. They do not know the light.

¹³ For now should I have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

²¹ before I go where I shall not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, where the light is as midnight.'"

¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, until my release should come.

¹ "My spirit is consumed. My days are extinct, And the grave is ready for me.

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living.

¹⁴ Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, look, you are there.

² He enters into peace; they rest in their beds, each one who walks in his uprightness.

²⁵ The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. ²⁶ It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

²⁸ though I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

²⁶ After my skin is destroyed, then in my flesh shall I see God,

²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust. The worm covers them.

³² Yet he will be borne to the grave. Men shall keep watch over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet to him. All men shall draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

²⁰ The womb shall forget him. The worm shall feed sweetly on him. He shall be no more remembered. Unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

³⁰ My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat.

¹⁰ For you will not abandon my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay.

⁹ that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.

²⁷ because you will not abandon my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay. ²⁸ You made known to me the paths of life. You will make me full of joy in your presence.' ²⁹ "Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. ³⁰ Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that one of his descendants would sit on his throne, ³¹ he foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left in Sheol, nor did his flesh see decay.

³⁴ "Concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he has spoken thus: 'I will give to you the faithful sacred things of David.' ³⁵ Therefore he says also in another psalm, 'You will not allow your Holy One to see decay.' ³⁶ For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was placed with his fathers, and saw decay. ³⁷ But he whom God raised up saw no decay.

⁴² So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.

⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. ⁵⁴ But when this corruptible will have put on incorruption, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

⁶ Isn't your piety your confidence? Isn't the integrity of your ways your hope?

¹⁵ Look, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.

¹⁰ He has broken me down on every side, and I am gone. My hope he has plucked up like a tree.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners are at ease together. They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.

¹³ The members of his body shall be devoured. The firstborn of death shall devour his members. ¹⁴ He shall be rooted out of his tent where he trusts. He shall be brought to the king of terrors.

¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain on his bed, with continual strife in his bones; ²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul choicest food. ²¹ His flesh is so consumed away, that it can't be seen. His bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yes, his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers. ²³ "If there is beside him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man what is right for him; ²⁴ then he is gracious to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.' ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's. He returns to the days of his youth. ²⁶ He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness. ²⁷ He sings before men, and says, 'I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me. ²⁸ He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life shall see the light.'

⁴ I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help, ⁵ set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. ⁷ Your wrath lies heavily on me. You have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah. ⁸ You have taken my friends from me. You have made me an abomination to them. I am confined, and I can't escape.

⁷ Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, so that I do not become like those who go down into the pit.

¹⁷ Look, for peace I had great anguish, but you have in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back. ¹⁸ For Sheol can't praise you. And death can't celebrate you. And those who go down into the pit can't hope for your truth.

¹¹ Then he said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: look, they say, 'Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are completely cut off.'

⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God.

⁹ Yes, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead,
