⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?

⁹ The enemy said, 'I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide the spoil. My desire shall be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.' ¹⁰ You blew with your wind. The sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ The Philistines seized him, and gouged out his eyes. And they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with bronze shackles, and he ground at the mill in the prison. ²² However the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved. ²³ The lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon, and to celebrate; for they said, "Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hand." ²⁴ When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, "Our god has delivered our enemy and the destroyer of our country, who has slain many of us, into our hand." ²⁵ And it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, that he may entertain us." So they called for Samson out of the prison; and he performed before them. And they were striking him. And they set him between the pillars; ²⁶ and Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, "Allow me to feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean on them." And the boy did so. ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there. And there were on the roof about three thousand men and women watching while Samson performed. ²⁸ Samson called to the LORD, and said, "Lord GOD, please remember me, and please strengthen me only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes." ²⁹ Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and leaned on them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. ³⁰ Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines." He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.

¹¹ Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, the multitude of his children, all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the officials and servants of the king. ¹² Haman also said, "Yes, Esther the queen let no man come in with the king to the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and tomorrow I am also invited by her together with the king.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

¹² While it is yet in its greenness, not cut down, it withers before any other reed. ¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the godless man shall perish,

¹⁹ Look, this is the joy of his way: out of the earth, others shall spring.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness. The flame shall dry up his branches. By the breath of God's mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness shall be his reward. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time. His branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive tree. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

⁵ "Yes, the light of the wicked shall be put out, The spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent. His lamp above him shall be put out.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

¹³ "This is the portion of a wicked man with God, the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from Shaddai. ¹⁴ If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword. His offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those who remain of him shall be buried in death. His widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes. ¹⁹ He lies down rich, but he shall not do so again. He opens his eyes, and it is gone. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place. ²² For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon. ³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

²¹ Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

²² But the crowd shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of a man." ²³ Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.

⁴ But let each one test his own work, and then he will take pride in himself and not in his neighbor.

¹⁶ But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
