¹ Moreover Elihu answered, ² "Hear my words, you sages. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge. ³ For the ear tries words, as the palate tastes food. ⁴ Let us choose for us that which is right. Let us know among ourselves what is good. ⁵ For Job has said, 'I am righteous, God has taken away my right: ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water, ⁸ Who goes in company with evildoers, and walks with wicked men? ⁹ For he has said, 'It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.' ¹⁰ "Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from Shaddai, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For the work of a man he will render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will Shaddai pervert justice. ¹³ Who put him in charge of the earth? or who has appointed him over the whole world? ¹⁴ If he set his heart on himself, If he gathered to himself his spirit and his breath, ¹⁵ all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust. ¹⁶ "If now you have understanding, hear this. Listen to the voice of my words. ¹⁷ Shall even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty?— ¹⁸ Who says to a king, 'Vile.' or to nobles, 'Wicked.'? ¹⁹ Who doesn't respect the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands. ²⁰ In a moment they die, even at midnight. The people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are taken away without a hand. ²¹ "For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings. ²² There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where evildoers may hide themselves. ²³ For he doesn't need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment. ²⁴ He breaks in pieces mighty men in ways past finding out, and sets others in their place. ²⁵ Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed. ²⁶ He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others; ²⁷ because they turned aside from following him, and wouldn't pay attention to any of his ways, ²⁸ so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted. ²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? Alike whether to a nation, or to a man, ³⁰ that the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people. ³¹ "For has any said to God, 'I am guilty, but I will not offend any more. ³² Teach me that which I do not see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more'? ³³ Shall his recompense be as you desire, that you refuse it? For you must choose, and not I. Therefore speak what you know. ³⁴ Men of understanding will tell me, yes, every wise man who hears me: ³⁵ 'Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.' ³⁶ I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men. ³⁷ For he adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God."

⁵ A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will attain to sound counsel.

¹⁵ I speak as to wise people. Judge what I say.

²⁰ Brothers, do not be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.

³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Can't my taste discern mischievous things?

¹¹ Doesn't the ear try words, even as the palate tastes its food?

³⁰ (yes, I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

² See now, I have opened my mouth. My tongue has spoken in my mouth.

¹⁵ But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one.

¹⁴ But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

³⁰ And it was so, that all who saw it said, "Nothing like this has been done or seen since the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt until this day." And he commanded the men whom he sent, saying, "This is what you will say to all the men of Israel, 'Has anything like this happened since the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt until this day? Consider it, take counsel, and speak.'"

⁷ Look, you children of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here."

³⁶ I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men.

² The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. ³ His delight will be in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by the sight of his eyes, neither decide by the hearing of his ears; ⁴ but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked. ⁵ Righteousness will be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his waist.

²⁴ Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment."

² And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

² Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? ³ Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? ⁴ If then, you have to judge things pertaining to this life, do you set them to judge who have no standing in the church? ⁵ I say this to move you to shame. Is there not even one wise person among you who would be able to decide between a brother and his brother?

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned. ¹² For before some people came from James, he ate with those who were not Jewish. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. ¹³ And the rest of the Jewish believers joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they did not walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the non-Jews do, and not as the Jews do, how can you compel the non-Jews to live as the Jews do?

²¹ but test all things; hold firmly that which is good.

¹⁷ For he bruises me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

⁴ For you say, 'My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.'

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

² "As God lives, who has taken away my right, Shaddai, who has made my soul bitter.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

⁹ 'I am clean, without disobedience. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.

⁴ For the arrows of Shaddai are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

¹³ His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall on the ground.

⁴ surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live.

¹⁹ and it happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, "I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to destroy the moist with the dry."

¹⁶ how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks iniquity like water.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁰ But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we indeed accept good at the hand of God, and shall we not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

³ Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty.

¹⁵ Will you keep the old way, which wicked men have trodden,

¹ Blessed is the one who doesn't follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path of sinners, or join in with scoffers.

⁴ I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites.

¹⁸ When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers.

¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence, ¹⁴ For all day long have I been plagued, and punished every morning. ¹⁵ If I had said, "I will speak thus;" look, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path,

¹² to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things;

¹⁴ Do not enter into the path of the wicked. Do not walk in the way of evil men.

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

³³ Do not be deceived. "Bad company corrupts good morals."

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge kills suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent.

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and cleanse my hands with lye, ³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes shall abhor me.

¹⁴ They tell God, 'Depart from us, for we do not want to know about your ways. ¹⁵ What is Shaddai, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?' ¹⁶ Look, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.

³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

¹⁷ who said to God, 'Depart from us;' and, 'What can Shaddai do for us?'

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in Shaddai, and call on God at all times?

³ That you ask, 'What advantage will it be to you? What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?'

⁴ Also delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

¹⁴ You have said, 'It is vain to serve God;' and 'What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

²⁵ Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?"

⁴ The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A faithful God and without iniquity, just and right is he.

⁷ Now therefore let the fear of the LORD be on you. Take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes."

³ Does God pervert justice? Or does Shaddai pervert righteousness?

³⁴ Men of understanding will tell me, yes, every wise man who hears me:

²³ Who has prescribed his way for him? Or who can say, 'You have committed unrighteousness?'

²³ We can't reach Shaddai. He is exalted in power. In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress.

¹⁵ to show that the LORD is upright. He is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

³² He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

³² He who refuses correction despises his own soul, but he who listens to reproof gets understanding.

¹ You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would reason the cause with you: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously?

⁴ Absolutely not. Let God be found true, but every human being a liar. As it is written, "That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you judge." ⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? (I am speaking in human terms).

¹⁴ What should we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Absolutely not.

¹³ Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.

²⁶ He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness.

¹² Also to you, Lord, belongs loving kindness, for you reward every man according to his work.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

¹² If you say, "Look, we did not know this;" doesn't he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn't he know it? Shall he not render to every man according to his work?

¹⁹ great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open on all the ways of human beings, to give to each person according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁷ "Yet the children of your people say, 'The way of the LORD is not just': but as for them, their way is not just. ¹⁸ When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die in it. ¹⁹ When the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. ²⁰ Yet you say, 'The way of the LORD is not just.' House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways."

²⁷ For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.

⁶ who "will pay back to everyone according to their works:"

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

⁷ Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a person sows, that he will also reap. ⁸ For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap everlasting life.

¹⁷ If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man's work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear:

¹² "Look, I am coming quickly. My reward is with me, to repay to each person according to his work.

⁷ For the LORD is righteous. He loves righteousness. The upright shall see his face.

¹⁷ The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and faithful in all his deeds.

¹² Aren't you from everlasting, LORD my God, my Holy One? We will not die. LORD, you have appointed him for judgment. You, Rock, have established him to punish. ¹³ You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously, and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he,

¹¹ Yours, LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.

⁴ "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it? ⁶ Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, ⁷ when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ "Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth from the womb, ⁹ when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness, ¹⁰ marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, 'Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?' ¹² "Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place; ¹³ that it might take hold of the farthest parts of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal, and stands forth as a garment. ¹⁵ From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken. ¹⁶ "Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all. ¹⁹ "What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place, ²⁰ that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house? ²¹ Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great. ²² Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth? ²⁵ Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it? ³⁰ The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen. ³¹ "Can you fasten the chains of Kimah, or loosen the cords of Kesil? ³² Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or can you lead Aysh with her children? ³³ Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth? ³⁴ "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, 'Here we are?' ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky, ³⁸ when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together? ³⁹ "Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified? ⁹ Or do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ "Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity. Array yourself with honor and majesty. ¹¹ Pour out the fury of your anger. Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.

²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth existed. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was brought forth; ²⁶ while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world. ²⁷ When he established the heavens, I was there; when he set a circle on the surface of the deep, ²⁸ when he established the clouds above, when the springs of the deep became strong, ²⁹ when he gave to the sea its boundary, that the waters should not violate his commandment, when he marked out the foundations of the earth; ³⁰ then I was the craftsman by his side. I was a delight day by day, always rejoicing before him,

¹³ Who has known the mind of the LORD, or who has instructed him as his counselor? ¹⁴ From whom did he take counsel with, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?

³⁵ All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing; and he does according to his will in the host of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, "What have you done?"

³⁴ For "Who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" ³⁵ "Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?" ³⁶ For from him and by him and in him are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him,

⁴ For he is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and prospered?

²⁹ You hide your face: they are troubled; you take away their breath: they die, and return to the dust.

²² And they will be gathered, a gathering in a dungeon, and shall be shut up in the prison; and after many days shall they be visited.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

⁹ Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again?

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living.

³ You turn man to destruction, saying, "Return, you descendants of Adam." ⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night. ⁵ You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass. ⁶ In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry. ⁷ For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh. ¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

⁴ Wrath is not in me, but if I should find briers and thorns, I would do battle. I would march on them and I would burn them together.

¹⁶ For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls who I have made.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Yes, who doesn't know such things as these?

² What you know, I know also. I am not inferior to you. ³ "Surely I would speak to Shaddai. I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But you are forgers of lies. You are all physicians of no value. ⁵ Oh that you would be completely silent. Then you would be wise. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning. Listen to the pleadings of my lips.

²¹ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, "Shall Shimei not be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD's anointed?"

³ The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'One who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God,

²² In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? (I am speaking in human terms). ⁶ Absolutely not. For then how will God judge the world? ⁷ For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

²⁸ "You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people.

²⁶ Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.

³ Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall. Do you sit to judge me according to the Law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?"

⁵ Paul said, "I did not know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, 'You must not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'"

⁷ Give therefore to everyone what you owe: taxes to whom taxes are due; customs to whom customs; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor.

¹⁷ Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

¹⁰ but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to blaspheme the glories;

⁸ Yet in like manner these also in their dreaming defile the flesh, despise authority, and blaspheme the glories.

¹⁵ "'You shall do no injustice in judgment: you shall not be partial to the poor, nor show favoritism to the great; but you shall judge your neighbor in righteousness.

¹⁷ For the LORD your God, he is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awesome, who doesn't respect persons, nor takes reward.

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁹ He leads priests away stripped, and overthrows the mighty.

²¹ He pours contempt on princes, and loosens the belt of the strong.

⁸ Will you show partiality to him? Will you contend for God?

¹⁵ Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same one fashion us in the womb?

¹⁹ Would your wealth sustain you in distress, or all the might of your strength?

² The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his Anointed: ³ "Letʼs tear off their shackles, and throw off their ropes from us." ⁴ The one who sits in the heavens laughs. The LORD scoffs at them.

⁶ They trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches. ⁷ Truly these cannot redeem a person, nor give to God a ransom for him.

³¹ He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

² The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD is the maker of them all.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, do not marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

¹⁴ The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and their leaders: "It is you who have eaten up the vineyard. The spoil of the poor is in your houses.

³⁴ And Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I perceive that God does not show favoritism;

¹¹ For there is no partiality with God.

⁶ But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows no favoritism between people)—they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,

⁹ You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

²⁵ But he who does wrong will receive again for the wrong that he has done, and there is no partiality.

²⁸ So since we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, through which we may offer service pleasing to God, with reverence and awe,

⁵ Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

²⁹ It happened at midnight, that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of livestock. ³⁰ Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

³⁷ It happened in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ It happened about ten days after, that the LORD struck Nabal, so that he died. ³⁹ When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Blessed is the LORD, who has taken my side in the matter of Nabal's insult, and has kept back his servant from evil. The LORD has returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head." David sent and spoke concerning Abigail, to take her to him as wife.

¹⁰ David said, "As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

²⁰ Do not desire the night, when people are cut off in their place.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors.

¹⁶ Therefore the LORD of hosts, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. ¹⁷ The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. ¹⁸ He will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints. ¹⁹ The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.

³⁰ The LORD will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the descent of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, storm, and hailstones. ³¹ For through the voice of the LORD the Assyrian will be dismayed. He will strike him with his rod. ³² Every stroke of the rod of punishment, which the LORD will lay on him, will be with the sound of tambourines and harps. He will fight with them in battles, brandishing weapons. ³³ For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is made ready. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. The LORD's breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

³⁶ The angel of the LORD went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, look, these were all dead bodies.

³⁸ It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

³⁴ You saw until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces.

⁴⁴ In the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall its sovereignty be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all those kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. ⁴⁵ Because you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall happen hereafter: and the dream is certain, and its interpretation sure."

³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

⁶ Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel, saying, 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts.

⁶ But at midnight there was a cry, 'Look. The bridegroom. Come out to meet him.'

²⁰ "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

²⁶ As it happened in the days of Noah, even so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man. ²⁷ They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the box-shaped vessel, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise, even as it happened in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; ²⁹ but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky, and destroyed them all.

²³ Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.

² For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

³ In covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old does not linger, and their destruction is not asleep.

¹³ And she called his name, the one who spoke to her, "You are El Roi," for she said, "Here I have seen the one who sees me."

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein you have done foolishly; for from now on you shall have wars."

⁴ Doesn't he see my ways, and number all my steps?

¹⁵ The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.

²³ Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD. He examines all his paths.

³ The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

¹⁷ For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, neither is their iniquity concealed from my eyes.

¹⁰ I, the LORD, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

⁸ Look, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the surface of the earth; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob," says the LORD.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let the blackness of the day terrify it.

¹⁷ For the morning is to all of them like thick darkness, for they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

³ Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and disaster for evildoers?

⁵ The arrogant shall not stand in your sight. You hate all evildoers.

¹¹ If I say, "Surely the darkness will overwhelm me; the light around me will be night;" ¹² even the darkness doesn't hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.

²⁹ The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, but it is a destruction to evildoers.

² The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light. Those living in the land and shadow of death, on them a light has shined.

¹⁵ Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from the LORD, and whose works are in the dark, and who say, "Who sees us?" and "Who knows us?"

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places so that I shall not see him?' says the LORD. 'Do I not fill heaven and earth?' says the LORD.

² Though they dig into Sheol, there my hand will take them; and though they climb up to heaven, there I will bring them down. ³ Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them.

²³ And then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'

²⁷ But he will reply, 'I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.'

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one will get his praise from God.

¹³ There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁵ The kings of the earth, the princes, the commanding officers, the rich, the strong, and every slave and free person, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains. ¹⁶ They told the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

¹³ "After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both.

⁶ that he would show you the secrets of wisdom. For true wisdom has two sides. Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

¹¹ For he knows false men. He sees iniquity also, even though he doesn't consider it.

²¹ that he would maintain the right of a man with God, of a son of man with his neighbor.

⁷ There the upright might reason with him, so I should be delivered forever from my judge.

¹⁰ "Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from Shaddai, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For the work of a man he will render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will Shaddai pervert justice.

¹³⁷ TZADE. You are righteous, LORD. Your judgments are upright.

³ He won't break a bruised reed. And he won't extinguish a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice.

⁵ Thus says the LORD, "What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

⁷ Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds that they have committed against you. ⁸ LORD, to us belongs open shame, to our kings, to our leaders, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him.

²⁰ But who indeed are you, a human being, to reply against God? Will the thing formed ask him who formed it, "Why did you make me like this?"

³⁰ "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. ³¹ Look, the days come, that I will cut off your descendants, and the descendants of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. ³² And you will see distress in the dwelling place, in all that he does good with Israel. And there will not be an old man in your house all the days. ³³ And the man of yours I do not cut off from my altar will be to cause his eyes to fail and to grieve his soul, and all the increase of your house will die by the sword of men. ³⁴ "'This shall be the sign to you, that shall come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall both die. ³⁵ I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever. ³⁶ It shall happen, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, "Please put me into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread."'"

²⁸ Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.

⁷ Go, tell Jeroboam, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: "Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you prince over my people Israel, ⁸ and tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it you; and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in my eyes,

¹⁴ Moreover the LORD will raise him up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam. This is day. What? Even now.

² "How long will you torment me, and crush me with words?

⁹ You shall rule them with an iron scepter. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."

⁴ He will judge the poor of the people. He will save the children of the needy, and will break the oppressor in pieces.

⁵ They break your people in pieces, LORD, and afflict your heritage.

⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust. Lifts up the needy from the ash heap; ⁸ that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

²⁰ "You are my battle axe and weapons of war: and with you will I break in pieces the nations; and with you will I destroy kingdoms; ²¹ and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and its rider. ²² And with you will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces the old man and the youth; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin; ²³ and with you will I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke; and with you will I break in pieces governors and deputies.

²¹ He changes the times and the seasons; he removes kings, and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding;

³⁴ You saw until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. ³⁵ Then was the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

²⁸ PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." ²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain. ³¹ Daryavesh the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

²⁰ In a moment they die, even at midnight. The people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are taken away without a hand.

¹⁵ he who fashions all of their hearts; and he considers all of their works.

⁸ They all handle the sword, and are expert in war. Every man has his sword on his thigh, because of fear in the night.

¹ The burden of Moab: for in a night, Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nothing; for in a night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to nothing.

¹⁸ "For I know their works and their thoughts. I am coming to gather all nations and languages; and they will come and see my glory.

² They do not consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness. Now their own deeds have engulfed them. They are before my face.

⁷ The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their works.

¹² I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

³⁰ Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

⁹ but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. ¹⁰ You shall stone him to death with stones, because he has sought to draw you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. ¹¹ All Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall not do any more such wickedness as this is in the midst of you.

²¹ All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹¹ "This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked; ¹¹ so that men shall say, "Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous. Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth."

²⁴ "They shall go forth, and look on the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they will be loathsome to all humankind."

²⁰ Those who sin, reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.

²⁴ The sins of some people are obvious, going before them to judgment, but those of others show up later.

⁹ The kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her, will weep and wail over her, when they look at the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ standing far away for the fear of her torment, saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city. For your judgment has come in one hour.'

²⁰ "Rejoice over her, O heaven, you saints, apostles, and prophets; for God has judged your judgment on her."

¹¹ "It grieves me that I have made Saul king; for he has turned back from following me, and has not carried out my commandments." And Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night.

⁵ Because they do not regard the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.

⁴³ Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things. They will consider the loving kindnesses of the LORD.

⁵ But as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways, The LORD will lead them away with evildoers. Peace be on Israel.

²⁹ because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD. ³⁰ They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people do not understand.

¹² The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

⁶ those who have turned back from following the LORD, and those who haven't sought the LORD nor inquired after him.

¹⁵ Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in the temple of the LORD. ¹⁶ Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty. ¹⁷ I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you did not turn to me,' says the LORD. ¹⁸ 'Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it. ¹⁹ Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven't brought forth. From this day will I bless you.'"

³¹ In that day, he who will be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away. Let him who is in the field likewise not turn back. ³² Remember Lot's wife.

³⁸ But Paul did not think that it was a good idea to take with them someone who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia, and did not go with them to do the work.

¹⁰ for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

³⁹ But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.

²³ It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage. ²⁴ God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

⁷ The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

⁹ Now, look, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

²³ If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. ²⁵ "If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor; neither shall you charge him interest. ²⁶ If you take your neighbor's garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down, ²⁷ for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are around you. Sudden fear troubles you,

¹² From out of the populous city, men groan. The soul of the wounded cries out, yet God doesn't regard the folly.

¹² Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had none to help him, ¹³ the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ if his heart hasn't blessed me, if he hasn't been warmed with my sheep's fleece;

⁹ "By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out. They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

⁵ "Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will place in safety the one who longs for it."

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but, look, oppression; for righteousness, but, look, a cry of distress.

⁴ Look, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

¹ It happened, when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around,

⁹ It happened in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ¹⁰ At the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. ¹¹ The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, ¹² because they did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the LORD which he had made holy in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, until there was no remedy. ¹⁷ Therefore he brought on them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed: he gave them all into his hand.

¹⁴ Look, he breaks down, and it can't be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

⁸ "If I go east, he is not there; if west, I can't find him; ⁹ He works to the north, but I can't see him. He turns south, but I can't catch a glimpse of him.

¹³ But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? What his soul desires, even that he does.

¹ Job again took up his parable, and said, ² "Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; ³ when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David.] How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

⁹ Do not hide your face from me. Do not put your servant away in anger. You have been my help. Do not abandon me, neither forsake me, God of my salvation.

⁷ You, LORD, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.

⁷ Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, so that I do not become like those who go down into the pit.

³ It will happen in the day that the LORD will give you rest from your sorrow, from your trouble, and from the hard service in which you were made to serve, ⁴ that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, "How the oppressor has ceased. How the attacker has ceased." ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, ⁶ who struck the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained. ⁷ The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet. They break out song. ⁸ Yes, the fir trees rejoice with you, with the cedars of Lebanon, saying, "Since you are humbled, no lumberjack has come up against us."

³ You will keep him in peace, in peace whose thoughts are fixed on you, because he trusts in you.

¹⁷ The work of righteousness will be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.

⁸ It shall happen, that the nation and the kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, says the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

²⁷ Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

³¹ What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² He who did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? ³³ Who could bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies. ³⁴ Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

⁷ And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

²⁸ Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and see your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt." ²⁹ He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. ³⁰ Then this thing became a sin, for the people went before the one at Bethel and before the one as far as Dan.

⁹ But they did not listen: and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than the nations did whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

²¹ "For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings.

⁸ The wicked walk on every side, when what is vile is exalted among the descendants of Adam.

² When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan. ³ Whoever loves wisdom brings joy to his father; but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth. ⁴ The king by justice makes the land stable, but he who takes bribes tears it down. ⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. ⁶ An evil man is snared by his sin, but the righteous can sing and be glad. ⁷ The righteous is concerned about justice for the poor. The wicked does not understand the concern. ⁸ Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger. ⁹ If a wise man goes to court with a foolish man, the fool rages or scoffs, and there is no peace. ¹⁰ The bloodthirsty hate a man of integrity; and they seek the life of the upright. ¹¹ A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control. ¹² If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment; Because he is intent in his pursuit of idols.

¹¹ I have given you a king in my anger, and have taken him away in my wrath.

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab; and you walk in their counsels. Therefore I will make you a desolation, and her inhabitants an object of contempt; and you will bear the scorn of the nations."

⁴ he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits in the temple of God, setting himself up as God. ⁵ Do you not remember that, when I was still with you, I told you these things? ⁶ Now you know what is restraining him, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. ⁷ For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way. ⁸ Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of his coming; ⁹ even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And because of this, God sends them a strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,

³ One of his heads looked like it had been wounded fatally. His fatal wound was healed, and the whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. ⁴ They worshiped the serpent, because he gave his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?"

¹¹ I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke like a serpent. ¹² He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. He makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. ¹³ He performs great signs, even making fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the sight of people. ¹⁴ He deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs he was granted to do in front of the beast; saying to those who dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who had been wounded by the sword and yet lived.

⁴¹ I also walked contrary to them, and brought them into the land of their enemies: if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled, and they then accept the punishment of their iniquity;

¹³ "After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant, ¹⁴ shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn't you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

³³ However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly; ³⁴ neither have our kings, our leaders, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them. ³⁵ For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them, neither did they turn from their wicked works. ³⁶ "Look, we are servants this day, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, look, we are servants in it. ³⁷ It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. ³⁸ Yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our leaders, our Levites, and our priests, seal it."

²⁷ He sings before men, and says, 'I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me.

³ Then Job answered the LORD, ⁴ "Look, I am of small account. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ I have spoken once, and I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further."

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.'

⁷ Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds that they have committed against you. ⁸ LORD, to us belongs open shame, to our kings, to our leaders, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him. ¹⁰ And have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. ¹¹ Yes, all Israel has transgressed your law, and turned away, refusing to obey your voice. Therefore has the curse been poured out on us, and the oath that is written in the Law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against you. ¹² He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing on us a great calamity; for under the whole heaven such has not been done as has been done on Jerusalem. ¹³ As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come on us. Yet have we not tried to gain the favor of the LORD our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in your truth. ¹⁴ Therefore has the LORD watched over the calamity, and brought it on us, for the LORD our God is just in all he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.

⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my case, and executes judgment for me. He will bring me forth to the light. I will see his righteousness.

² I will tell God, 'Do not condemn me. Show me why you contend with me.

¹¹ who teaches us more than the animals of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the sky?'

¹² Who can discern his errors? Forgive me from hidden errors.

⁴ Show me your ways, LORD. Teach me your paths. ⁵ Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

⁸ I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

²³ Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. ²⁴ See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

⁸ Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you. ⁹ Deliver me, LORD, from my enemies. I run to you for refuge. ¹⁰ Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.

¹³ He who conceals his sins doesn't prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father;' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ⁹ Even now the axe also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire." ¹⁰ The crowds asked him, "What then must we do?" ¹¹ He answered them, "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise." ¹² Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?" ¹³ He said to them, "Collect no more than that which is appointed to you." ¹⁴ Soldiers also asked him, saying, "What about us? What must we do?" He said to them, "Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages."

²² that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old self, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;

²⁵ Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. ²⁶ "Be angry, but do not sin." Do not let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷ neither give place to the devil. ²⁸ Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.

¹² Look, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, 'What are you doing?'

³¹ Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; for emptiness shall be his reward.

⁴ You who tear yourself in your anger, shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed out of its place?

⁵ If you can, answer me. Set your words in order before me, and stand forth.

³² If you have anything to say, answer me. Speak, for I desire to justify you.

¹¹ For the work of a man he will render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

¹¹ Who has confronted me, that I should repay? Everything under the heavens is mine.

³⁰ If his children forsake my Law, and do not walk in my ordinances; ³¹ if they break my statutes, and do not keep my commandments; ³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

⁶ Whatever the LORD pleased, that he has done, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps;

³¹ If the righteous is delivered with difficulty, where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?

⁹ Woe to him who strives with his Maker, a clay pot among the clay pots of the earth. Shall the clay ask him who fashions it, 'What are you making?' or your work, 'He has no hands?'

¹² saying, 'These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' ¹³ "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? ¹⁴ Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?'

³⁵ "Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?"

⁶ Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, ⁷ and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

² For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense;

²⁶ considering the abuse suffered for the Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

² "Hear my words, you sages. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge.

⁴ Let us choose for us that which is right. Let us know among ourselves what is good.

¹⁰ "Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from Shaddai, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁶ "If now you have understanding, hear this. Listen to the voice of my words.

² What you know, I know also. I am not inferior to you.

² "Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?

¹⁶ Therefore Job opens his mouth with empty talk, and he multiplies words without knowledge."

² "Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

³ You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' therefore I have uttered that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper. Those who provoke God are secure, who carry their god in their hands.

⁷ "Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?

¹⁶ For God has made my heart faint. Shaddai has terrified me.

¹ "Why aren't times made known by Shaddai? Why do not those who know him see his days?

⁸ Who goes in company with evildoers, and walks with wicked men? ⁹ For he has said, 'It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.'

³ You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing. I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

² Examine me, LORD, and prove me. Try my heart and my mind.

¹¹ Look, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king."

² "How long will you speak these things? Shall the words of your mouth be a mighty wind? ³ Does God pervert justice? Or does Shaddai pervert righteousness?

² "Shouldn't the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

² "Even today my complaint is rebellious. His hand is heavy in spite of my groaning.

²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

² "Do you think this to be your right, or do you say, 'My righteousness is more than God's,' ³ That you ask, 'What advantage will it be to you? What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?'

⁷ It was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; ²⁰ but if you refuse and rebel, the sword shall devour you; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it."
