²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? Alike whether to a nation, or to a man,

¹ It happened, when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around,

⁹ It happened in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ¹⁰ At the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. ¹¹ The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, ¹² because they did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the LORD which he had made holy in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, until there was no remedy. ¹⁷ Therefore he brought on them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed: he gave them all into his hand.

¹⁴ Look, he breaks down, and it can't be built again. He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.

⁸ "If I go east, he is not there; if west, I can't find him; ⁹ He works to the north, but I can't see him. He turns south, but I can't catch a glimpse of him.

¹³ But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? What his soul desires, even that he does.

¹ Job again took up his parable, and said, ² "Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; ³ when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David.] How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

⁹ Do not hide your face from me. Do not put your servant away in anger. You have been my help. Do not abandon me, neither forsake me, God of my salvation.

⁷ You, LORD, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.

⁷ Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, so that I do not become like those who go down into the pit.

³ It will happen in the day that the LORD will give you rest from your sorrow, from your trouble, and from the hard service in which you were made to serve, ⁴ that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, "How the oppressor has ceased. How the attacker has ceased." ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, ⁶ who struck the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained. ⁷ The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet. They break out song. ⁸ Yes, the fir trees rejoice with you, with the cedars of Lebanon, saying, "Since you are humbled, no lumberjack has come up against us."

³ You will keep him in peace, in peace whose thoughts are fixed on you, because he trusts in you.

¹⁷ The work of righteousness will be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.

⁸ It shall happen, that the nation and the kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, says the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

²⁷ Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

³¹ What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² He who did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? ³³ Who could bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies. ³⁴ Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

⁷ And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
