¹ Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, ² "How long will you speak these things? Shall the words of your mouth be a mighty wind? ³ Does God pervert justice? Or does Shaddai pervert righteousness? ⁴ If your children have sinned against him, He has delivered them into the hand of their disobedience. ⁵ If you want to seek God diligently, make your petition to Shaddai. ⁶ If you were pure and upright, surely now he would awaken for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous. ⁷ Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would greatly increase. ⁸ "Please inquire of past generations. Find out about the learning of their fathers. ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.) ¹⁰ Shall they not teach you, tell you, and utter words out of their heart? ¹¹ "Can the papyrus grow up without mire? Can the rushes grow without water? ¹² While it is yet in its greenness, not cut down, it withers before any other reed. ¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the godless man shall perish, ¹⁴ Whose confidence shall break apart, Whose trust is a spider's web. ¹⁵ He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand. He shall cling to it, but it shall not endure. ¹⁶ He is green before the sun. His shoots go forth over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped around the rock pile. He sees the place of stones. ¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, 'I have not seen you.' ¹⁹ Look, this is the joy of his way: out of the earth, others shall spring. ²⁰ "Look, God will not cast away a blameless man, neither will he uphold the evildoers. ²¹ He will still fill your mouth with laughter, your lips with shouting. ²² Those who hate you shall be clothed with shame. The tent of the wicked shall be no more."

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this adversity that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.

³ Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.

⁷ Pharaoh's servants said to him, "How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?"

¹¹ And he said, "Go out tomorrow and stand on the mountain before the LORD." Look, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

⁹ even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off.

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, seeing that the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?

¹¹ "Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

² "Shouldn't the multitude of words be answered? Should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your boastings make men hold their peace? When you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

² "Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?

³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer?

² "How long will you hunt for words? Consider, and afterwards we will speak.

² "How long will you torment me, and crush me with words? ³ You have reproached me ten times. You aren't ashamed that you attack me.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

²⁵ Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?"

⁴ The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A faithful God and without iniquity, just and right is he.

⁷ Now therefore let the fear of the LORD be on you. Take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes."

¹⁷ 'Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?

² "Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God?

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?

⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice.

¹⁵ What is Shaddai, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?'

²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of Shaddai.

⁵ For Job has said, 'I am righteous, God has taken away my right:

¹⁰ "Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from Shaddai, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For the work of a man he will render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will Shaddai pervert justice.

¹⁷ Shall even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty?— ¹⁸ Who says to a king, 'Vile.' or to nobles, 'Wicked.'? ¹⁹ Who doesn't respect the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

¹³ Surely God will not hear an empty cry, neither will Shaddai regard it.

² "Shall he who argues contend with Shaddai? He who argues with God, let him answer it."

⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

¹⁴ Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.

⁴ The King's strength also loves justice. You do establish equity. You execute justice and righteousness in Jacob.

²⁵ "'Yet you say, "The way of the LORD is not just." Hear now, house of Israel: "Is my way not just? Aren't your ways unjust?"

¹⁷ "Yet the children of your people say, 'The way of the LORD is not just': but as for them, their way is not just.

²⁰ Yet you say, 'The way of the LORD is not just.' House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways."

¹⁴ Therefore has the LORD watched over the calamity, and brought it on us, for the LORD our God is just in all he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.

⁵ But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

⁴ Absolutely not. Let God be found true, but every human being a liar. As it is written, "That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you judge." ⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? (I am speaking in human terms). ⁶ Absolutely not. For then how will God judge the world?

³ They sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God of hosts. Righteous and true are your ways, King of the nations.

⁷ I heard the altar saying, "Yes, Lord God of hosts, true and righteous are your judgments."

¹³ Now the people of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly against God.

¹³ for we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before God that he has sent us to destroy it." ¹⁴ Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, "Get up. Get out of this place, for God will destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking. ¹⁵ When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up. Take your wife, and your two daughters who are here, and get out, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city." ¹⁶ But he hesitated, so the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and his two daughters' hands, God being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city. ¹⁷ It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, "Escape for your life. Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away." ¹⁸ Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my lord. ¹⁹ See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can't escape to the mountain, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die. ²⁰ See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there--isn't it a little one?--and my life will be saved." ²¹ He said to him, "Look, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. ²² Hurry, escape there, for I can't do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. ²³ The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. ²⁴ Then the LORD rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the sky. ²⁵ He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.

⁵ It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts." Job did so continually.

¹⁸ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, ¹⁹ and look, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."

⁴ His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath. Above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth. He shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹² When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his petition, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.

⁸ "But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,

¹³ "If you set your heart aright, stretch out your hands toward him.

²¹ "Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. Thereby good shall come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to Shaddai, you shall be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents. ²⁴ Lay your treasure in the dust, the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Shaddai will be your treasure, and precious silver to you. ²⁶ For then you will delight yourself in Shaddai, and shall lift up your face to God. ²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You shall pay your vows. ²⁸ And you will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When they cast down, you shall say, 'be lifted up.' And he will save the humble. ³⁰ He will even deliver him who is not innocent. Yes, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call you on him while he is near: ⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

⁷ "Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. ⁸ For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

⁷ Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, "Today if you will hear his voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

⁷ Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ⁹ Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁸ The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil."

⁶ Isn't your piety your confidence? Isn't the integrity of your ways your hope? ⁷ "Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

²⁴ You shall know that your tent is in peace. You shall visit your fold, and shall miss nothing.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

¹⁴ They tell God, 'Depart from us, for we do not want to know about your ways. ¹⁵ What is Shaddai, that we should serve him? What profit should we have, if we pray to him?'

⁶ Arise, LORD, in your anger. Lift up yourself against the rage of my adversaries. Awake, my God; you have appointed judgment.

⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked. ⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, so I will go about your altar, LORD;

²³ Wake up. Why do you sleep, Lord? Arise. Do not reject us forever.

⁴ I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Rise up, look, and help me. ⁵ You, LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish the nations. Show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁵ When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

¹⁰ Tell the righteous "Good." For they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of the LORD; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Isn't it you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the monster?

⁸ I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.

¹⁹ And by this we will know that we are of the truth, and persuade our heart before him, ²⁰ because if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; ²² and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹⁶ who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know; that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end:

¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys. ¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters.

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like a shining light, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.

²⁰ Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.

¹⁰ Indeed, who despises the day of small things? For these seven shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. These are the eyes of the LORD, which run back and forth through the whole earth."

⁷ It will be a unique day which is known to the LORD; not day, and not night; but it will come to pass, that at evening time there will be light.

¹² For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever does not have, from him will be taken away even that which he has.

³¹ He set another parable before them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; ³² which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches."

²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

³² For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created humankind on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as this great thing is, or has been heard like it?

⁷ Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

¹² With aged men is wisdom, in length of days understanding.

¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much elder than your father.

¹⁸ (Which wise men have told by their fathers, and have not hidden it;

⁶ Elihu the son of Barakel the Buzite answered, "I am young, and you are very old; Therefore I held back, and did not dare show you my opinion. ⁷ I said, 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

¹ [For the Chief Musician. By the sons of Korah. A contemplative psalm.] We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us, what work you did in their days, in the days of old.

³ which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their descendants, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous works that he has done.

¹⁹ The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do this day. The father shall make known your truth to the children.

⁴ For whatever things were written before were written for our instruction, that through patience and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

¹¹ Now these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

⁹ So Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourning are one hundred thirty years. Few and difficult have been the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning."

¹⁵ For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no remaining.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

² He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down. He also flees like a shadow, and doesn't continue.

⁵ Look, you have made my days handbreadths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath." Selah.

⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.

⁴ Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away.

⁷ and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

⁴ By faith, Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he was attested as righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and though he died he still speaks through it.

¹ Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

³ When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus box for him and coated it with bitumen and with pitch. And she put the child in it and put it among the rushes by the bank of the river.

⁵ The waters will fail from the sea, and the river will be wasted and become dry. ⁶ The rivers will become foul. The streams of Egypt will be diminished and dried up. The reeds and flags will wither away. ⁷ The meadows by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all the sown fields of the Nile, will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

⁶ Let them be as the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up; ⁷ with which the reaper doesn't fill his hand, nor he who binds sheaves, his bosom.

⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.

²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it;

¹⁰ and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. ¹¹ For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich person fade away in his pursuits.

²⁴ For, "All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;

¹² then beware lest you forget the LORD, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

¹¹ Beware lest you forget the LORD your God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command you this day:

¹⁴ then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

¹⁹ It shall be, if you shall forget the LORD your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail. They shall have no way to flee. Their hope shall be the giving up of the spirit."

¹⁶ This also shall be my salvation, that a godless man shall not come before him.

³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

¹⁴ He shall be rooted out of his tent where he trusts. He shall be brought to the king of terrors.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him? ¹⁰ Will he delight himself in Shaddai, and call on God at all times?

¹³ "But those who are godless in heart lay up anger. They do not cry for help when he binds them.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be turned back to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God.

⁴ The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek. All his thoughts are "There is no God."

²² "Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be none to deliver.

²⁸ The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked will perish.

⁷ The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid. Trembling has seized the godless ones. Who among us can live with the devouring fire? Who among us can live with everlasting burning?

¹³ and have forgotten the LORD your Maker, who stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and fear continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, when he makes ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

¹⁸ And I said, "My strength and my hope has perished from the LORD."

⁵¹ and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

¹ Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known.

⁵ They hatch adders' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

¹⁸ He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes.

¹¹ Their tombs are their homes forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.

⁵ God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah. ⁶ The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying, ⁷ "Look, this is the man who did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and was confident in his desire."

¹⁰ The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish.

²⁴ "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ²⁵ And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ And everyone who hears these words of mine, and does not do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall."

⁴⁷ Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. ⁴⁸ He is like someone building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. ⁴⁹ But he who hears, and does not do, is like someone who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

⁷ "Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power? ⁸ Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bulls breed without fail. Their cows calve, and do not miscarry. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock. Their children dance. ¹² They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon. ³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their sin proceeds forth from fatness. Their hearts overflow with imaginations. ⁸ They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore my people turn to them, and they drink up waters of abundance. ¹¹ They say, "How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?" ¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches.

¹¹ It sent out its branches to the sea, Its shoots to the River.

¹⁶ The LORD called your name, "A green olive tree, beautiful with goodly fruit." With the noise of a great tumult he has kindled fire on it, and its branches are broken.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath. Above shall his branch be cut off.

¹⁹ My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch.

²⁴ Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹ You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would reason the cause with you: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yes, they have taken root; they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their heart.

²⁰ As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

¹² These are hidden rocky reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you, shepherds who without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn leaves without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

⁸ The eye of him who sees me shall see me no more. Your eyes shall be on me, but I shall not be.

¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more, neither shall his place any more see him.

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn't there.

³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors.

⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's. He has set the world on them.

⁷ But God is the judge. He puts down one, and lifts up another.

⁹ and do not think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

⁷ "Remember, now, whoever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

²⁴ Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for the LORD holds him up with his hand.

³⁷ Observe the blameless, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

¹⁴ For the LORD won't reject his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

¹ Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Koresh, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut:

Many also shouted aloud for joy, ¹³ so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard far away.

⁴³ They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced; for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and the women also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

²² At destruction and famine you shall laugh, neither shall you be afraid of the animals of the earth.

¹¹ Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, you righteous. Shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.

⁴ Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises.

² Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

⁶ He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves.

¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Look, my servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry; look, my servants shall drink, but you shall be thirsty; look, my servants shall rejoice, but you shall be disappointed; ¹⁴ look, my servants shall sing in gladness of heart, but you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall wail for anguish of spirit.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I shall not be."

¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, 'I have not seen you.'

²⁶ Let them be put to shame and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.

²⁹ Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor. Let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will be resplendent."

⁵ Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, towards one another; for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
