⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?" And he answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

⁸ The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him; for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil." Jehoshaphat said, "Do not let the king say so."

³⁶ But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death."

⁷ He who corrects a mocker invites insult. He who reproves a wicked man invites abuse. ⁸ Do not reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.

¹² A scoffer doesn't love to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.

²¹ who cause a person to be indicted by a word, and lay a snare for the arbiter in the gate, and who deprive the innocent of justice with false testimony.

⁷ Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to the one who is despised, to the abhorred of the nation, the servant of rulers: "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of the LORD who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."

⁸ For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, "Violence and destruction." because the word of the LORD is made a reproach to me, and a derision, all the day.

⁷ This is what the LORD showed me: And look, he was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. ⁸ And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the LORD said, "Look, I have set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more. ⁹ The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." ¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. ¹¹ For Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'" ¹² Amaziah also said to Amos, "You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: ¹³ but do not prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house."

⁸ I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.

²⁶ Woe when all people speak well of you, for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.

³⁹ The Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You foolish ones, did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But give for gifts to the needy those things which are within, and see, all things will be clean to you. ⁴² But woe to you Pharisees. For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and the love of God. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees. For you love the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe to you. For you are like hidden graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it." ⁴⁵ One of the Law scholars answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you insult us also." ⁴⁶ He said, "Woe to you Law scholars also. For you load people with burdens that are difficult to carry, and you yourselves won't even lift one finger to help carry those burdens. ⁴⁷ Woe to you. For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So you are witnesses and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute, ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.' Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe to you Law scholars. For you took away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in, you hindered." ⁵³ And when he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to provoke him to speak about many things; ⁵⁴ lying in wait for him, seeking to catch him in something he might say, that they might accuse him.

¹⁹ This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil.

¹⁸ If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.'

¹⁴ I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

²⁸ saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood on us." ²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than people. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed, hanging him on a tree. ³¹ God exalted him with his right hand to be a Leader and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. ³² We are witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." ³³ But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and wanted to kill them.

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so you do. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers. ⁵³ You received the Law as it was ordained by angels, and did not keep it." ⁵⁴ Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

⁷ because the mind set on the flesh is hostile towards God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot.

¹⁶ So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

¹² unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous. ¹³ Therefore do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.

⁵ They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.

⁵ If anyone desires to harm them, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies. If anyone desires to harm them, he must be killed in this way. ⁶ These have the power to shut up the sky, that it may not rain during the days of their prophecy. They have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire. ⁷ When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them, and kill them. ⁸ Their dead bodies will be in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. ⁹ From among the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations people will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not allow their dead bodies to be placed in a tomb. ¹⁰ Those who dwell on the earth rejoice over them, and they will be glad. They will give gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth. ¹¹ After the three and a half days, the breath of life from God entered into them, and they stood on their feet. Great fear fell on those who saw them.
