¹ These are the inheritances which the children of Israel took in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of ancestral houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed to them, ² by the lot of their inheritance, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, to give to the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe. ³ For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. ⁴ For the descendants of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their livestock and for their property. ⁵ The children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses, and they divided the land. ⁶ Then the descendants of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal. Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the thing that the LORD spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh Barnea. ⁷ I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ⁸ Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God. ⁹ Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.' ¹⁰ Now, look, the LORD has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, look, I am eighty-five years old, today. ¹¹ I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now for war, to go out and to come in. ¹² Now therefore give me this hill country, of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the LORD spoke." ¹³ Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. ¹⁴ Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day; because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel. ¹⁵ Now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba, after the greatest man among the Anakim. The land had rest from war.

¹⁷ "These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. ¹⁸ You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance. ¹⁹ These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ²⁰ Of the tribe of the people of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. ²¹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. ²² Of the tribe of the people of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. ²³ Of the people of Joseph: of the tribe of the people of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod. ²⁴ Of the tribe of the people of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. ²⁵ Of the tribe of the people of Zebulun a prince, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. ²⁶ Of the tribe of the people of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. ²⁷ Of the tribe of the people of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. ²⁸ Of the tribe of the people of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud." ²⁹ These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

⁵⁵ Notwithstanding, the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. ⁵⁶ According to the lot shall their inheritance be divided between the more and the fewer."

⁵⁴ You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance: wherever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.

¹³ Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, "This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;

⁵ The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup. You made my lot secure. ⁶ The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, beautiful is my inheritance.

³³ The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

¹⁸ The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.

³⁴ Then the King will tell those on his right hand, 'Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

²⁹ Moses said to them, "If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you; then you are to give them the land of Gilead for a possession. ³⁰ But if they will not pass over with you armed to battle before the LORD, then you are to bring over their children and their wives and their flocks before you into the land of Canaan, and they are to have possessions among you in the land of Canaan." ³¹ The people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, saying, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do. ³² We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ Moses gave to them, even to the people of Gad, and to the people of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The people of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep. ³⁷ The people of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built. ³⁹ The descendants of Makir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰ Moses gave Gilead to Makir the son of Manasseh; and he lived in it. ⁴¹ Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

¹² This land we took in possession at that time: from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead, and its cities, gave I to the Reubenites and to the Gadites: ¹³ and the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I to the half-tribe of Manasseh. All the region of Argob, with all Bashan, was called the land of Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.) ¹⁵ I gave Gilead to Makir. ¹⁶ To the Reubenites and to the Gadites I gave from Gilead to the Valley of the Arnon, the middle of the valley, and its border, even to the river Jabbok, which is the border of the people of Ammon; ¹⁷ the Arabah also, and the Jordan and its border, from Kinnereth even to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.

⁸ But to the two tribes and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, with him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them:

¹⁴ Only he gave no inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spoke to him.

³² These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward. ³³ But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spoke to them.

⁵ And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.

² "Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and you shall give suburbs for the cities around them to the Levites. ³ The cities shall they have to dwell in; and their suburbs shall be for their livestock, and for their substance, and for all their animals. ⁴ "The suburbs of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand seven hundred twenty-two feet six inches around it. ⁵ You shall measure outside of the city for the east side three thousand four hundred forty-five feet, and for the south side three thousand four hundred forty-five feet, and for the west side three thousand four hundred forty-five feet, and for the north side three thousand four hundred forty-five feet, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the suburbs of the cities. ⁶ "The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the manslayer to flee to: and besides them you shall give forty-two cities. ⁷ All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their suburbs. ⁸ Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many; and from the few you shall take few: everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give of his cities to the Levites."

² They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The LORD commanded Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for our livestock." ³ The children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, according to the commandment of the LORD, these cities with their suburbs. ⁴ The lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. The descendants of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot out of the tribe of Judah, out of the tribe of the Simeonites, and out of the tribe of Benjamin. ⁵ The rest of the descendants of Kohath had ten cities by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh. ⁶ The descendants of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, out of the tribe of Asher, out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. ⁷ The descendants of Merari according to their families had twelve cities by lot out of the tribe of Reuben, out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun. ⁸ The children of Israel gave these cities with their suburbs by lot to the Levites, as the LORD commanded by Moses. ⁹ They gave out of the tribe of the descendants of Judah, and out of the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, these cities which are mentioned by name: ¹⁰ and they were for the descendants of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the descendants of Levi; for theirs was the first lot. ¹¹ They gave them Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (that is, Hebron), in the hill country of Judah, with its suburbs around it. ¹² But they gave the fields of the city and its villages to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession. ¹³ To the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah with its suburbs, ¹⁴ Jattir with its suburbs, Eshtemoa with its suburbs, ¹⁵ Holon with its suburbs, Debir with its suburbs, ¹⁶ Ashan with its suburbs, Juttah with its suburbs, and Beth Shemesh with its suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes. ¹⁷ Out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its suburbs, Geba with its suburbs, ¹⁸ Anathoth with its suburbs, and Almon with its suburbs; four cities. ¹⁹ All the cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs. ²⁰ The families of the descendants of Kohath, the Levites, even the rest of the descendants of Kohath, had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim. ²¹ They gave them Shechem with its suburbs in the hill country of Ephraim, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Gezer with its suburbs, ²² Kibzaim with its suburbs, and Beth Horon with its suburbs; four cities. ²³ Out of the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its suburbs, Gibbethon with its suburbs, ²⁴ Aijalon with its suburbs, Gath Rimmon with its suburbs; four cities. ²⁵ Out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its suburbs, and Beth Shean with its suburbs; two cities. ²⁶ All the cities of the families of the rest of the descendants of Kohath were ten with their suburbs. ²⁷ They gave to the descendants of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the half-tribe of Manasseh Golan in Bashan with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Be Eshterah with its suburbs; two cities. ²⁸ Out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its suburbs, Daberath with its suburbs, ²⁹ Jarmuth with its suburbs, En Gannim with its suburbs; four cities. ³⁰ Out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its suburbs, Abdon with its suburbs, ³¹ Helkath with its suburbs, and Rehob with its suburbs; four cities. ³² Out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Hammothdor with its suburbs, and Kartan with its suburbs; three cities. ³³ All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs. ³⁴ To the families of the descendants of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its suburbs, Kartah with its suburbs, ³⁵ Rimmon with its suburbs, and Nahalal with its suburbs; four cities. ³⁶ And across the Jordan opposite Jericho, from the tribe of Reuben: a city of refuge for the manslayer, Bezer in the wilderness, on the plateau, with its suburbs, Jahaz with its suburbs, ³⁷ Kedemoth with its suburbs, and Mephaath with its suburbs; four cities. ³⁸ Out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Mahanaim with its suburbs, ³⁹ Heshbon with its suburbs, Jazer with its suburbs; four cities in all. ⁴⁰ All these were the cities of the descendants of Merari according to their families, even the rest of the families of the Levites. Their lot was twelve cities. ⁴¹ All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight cities with their suburbs. ⁴² Each of these cities included their suburbs around them. It was this way with all these cities.

¹ The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn; but, because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and not to be regarded in the genealogy as the firstborn. ² For Judah prevailed above his brothers, and a leader descended from him; but the birthright was Joseph's:)

⁵⁴ Now these are their dwelling places according to their encampments in their borders: to the descendants of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites (for theirs was the first lot), ⁵⁵ to them they gave Hebron in the land of Judah, and its suburbs around it; ⁵⁶ but the fields of the city, and its villages, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷ To the descendants of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge, Hebron; Libnah also with its suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa with its suburbs, ⁵⁸ and Hilen with its suburbs, Debir with its suburbs, ⁵⁹ and Ashan with its suburbs, and Juttah with its suburbs, and Beth Shemesh with its suburbs; ⁶⁰ and out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its suburbs, Geba with its suburbs, and Allemeth with its suburbs, and Anathoth with its suburbs. All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities. ⁶¹ To the rest of the descendants of Kohath were given by lot, out of the family of the tribe, out of the half-tribe, the half of Manasseh, ten cities. ⁶² To the descendants of Gershom, according to their families, out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. ⁶³ To the descendants of Merari were given by lot, according to their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. ⁶⁴ The children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities with their suburbs. ⁶⁵ They gave by lot out of the tribe of the descendants of Judah, and out of the tribe of the people of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the people of Benjamin, these cities which are mentioned by name. ⁶⁶ Some of the families of the descendants of Kohath, of the Levites, even the rest of the descendants of Kohath, had cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ They gave to them the cities of refuge, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim with its suburbs; Gezer also with its suburbs, ⁶⁸ and Jokmeam with its suburbs, and Beth Horon with its suburbs, ⁶⁹ and Aijalon with its suburbs, and Gath Rimmon with its suburbs; ⁷⁰ and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its suburbs, and Ibleam with its suburbs, for the rest of the family of the descendants of Kohath. ⁷¹ To the descendants of Gershom were given, out of the family of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with its suburbs, and Ashtaroth with its suburbs; ⁷² and out of the tribe of Issachar, Kedesh with its suburbs, Daberath with its suburbs, ⁷³ and Ramoth with its suburbs, and Anem with its suburbs; ⁷⁴ and out of the tribe of Asher, Mashal with its suburbs, and Abdon with its suburbs, ⁷⁵ and Hukok with its suburbs, and Rehob with its suburbs; ⁷⁶ and out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its suburbs, and Hammon with its suburbs, and Kiriathaim with its suburbs. ⁷⁷ To the rest of the Levites, the descendants of Merari, were given, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its suburbs, Rimmon with its suburbs, and Tabor with its suburbs, and Nahalal with its suburbs. ⁷⁸ And beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, were given them, out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wilderness with its suburbs, and Jahzah with its suburbs, ⁷⁹ and Kedemoth with its suburbs, and Mephaath with its suburbs; ⁸⁰ and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its suburbs, and Mahanaim with its suburbs, ⁸¹ and Heshbon with its suburbs, and Jazer with its suburbs.

¹ The LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, ² "Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and you shall give suburbs for the cities around them to the Levites.

⁷ My servant Moses is not so. He is faithful in all my house. ⁸ With him I will speak mouth to mouth, even openly, and not in riddles; and he shall see the LORD's form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?"

⁶ Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

²⁶ They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

⁶ Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

²⁴ but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.

³⁰ surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed the LORD completely.'

³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD." ³⁷ Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there: ³⁸ Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, because he will cause Israel to inherit it.

¹ This is the blessing, with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

⁵ So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

¹⁰ There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

¹⁹ The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.

⁴³ Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

¹⁴ Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day; because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.

¹⁷ Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.

⁶ Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, "A man of God came to me, and his face was like the face of the angel of God, very awesome; and I didn't ask him where he was from, neither did he tell me his name, ⁷ but he said to me, 'Look, you shall conceive, and bear a son. And now drink no wine nor strong drink, and do not eat any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death.'" ⁸ Then Manoah pleaded with the LORD, and said, "Oh, Lord, please let the man of God whom you did send come again to us, and teach us what we shall do to the child who shall be born."

¹ Look, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Beth El: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

¹⁴ He went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. He said to him, "Are you the man of God who came from Judah?" He said, "I am."

⁹ She said to her husband, "See now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passes by us continually.

¹⁶ He said, "At this season, when the time comes around, you will embrace a son." She said, "No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your handmaid."

⁴² A man from Baal Shalishah came, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. He said, "Give to the people, that they may eat."

⁷ Elisha came to Damascus; and Benhadad the king of Aram was sick. It was told him, saying, "The man of God has come here."

¹¹ He settled his gaze steadfastly on him, until he was ashamed. Then the man of God wept.

¹ [A Prayer by Moses, the man of God.] Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.

¹¹ But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.

¹⁷ that the person of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

¹⁶ These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. ¹⁷ Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way by the Negev, and go up into the hill country: ¹⁸ and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; ¹⁹ and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; ²⁰ and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood in it, or not. Be courageous, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes."

²⁶ They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. ²⁷ They told him, and said, "We came to the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is its fruit. ²⁸ However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. ²⁹ Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev: and the Hethites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan." ³⁰ Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it." ³¹ But the men who went up with him said, "We aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we." ³² They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, "The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature. ³³ There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight."

⁶ Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes: ⁷ and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. ⁸ If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them." ¹⁰ But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

³¹ But the men who went up with him said, "We aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we."

³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD."

⁴ These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed from among humanity, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb.

²² They went up by the Negev, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

²² because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice; ²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it: ²⁴ but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.

³ I have given you every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, as I told Moses.

³³ Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness. ³⁴ After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.'

¹⁸ Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

² He said to them, "I am one hundred twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: and the LORD has said to me, 'You shall not go over this Jordan.'

⁷ Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural vigor diminished.

¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.

⁵ who satisfies your desire with good things; your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

⁸ If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."

³⁴ The LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon."

²¹ Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. ²² There were none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.

¹⁴ Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

²⁰ They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had spoken; and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.

⁶ Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us; for there is no restraint on the LORD to save by many or by few."

¹¹ Asa cried to the LORD his God, and said, "LORD, there is none besides you to help, between the mighty and those who have no strength. Help us, LORD our God; for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. LORD, you are our God. Do not let man prevail against you."

Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

³ For they did not get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable to them.

⁸ Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God. ⁹ Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.'

⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

² Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

¹¹ The land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years. And Ehud judged them until he died.

³¹ So let all your enemies perish, LORD, but let those who love you be as the sun when it rises forth in its strength." And the land had rest forty years.

²⁸ So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and did not become a threat again. The land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.
