² The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated.

²³ Abraham drew near, and said, "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? ²⁴ What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you sweep it away and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? ²⁵ Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?" ²⁶ The LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake." ²⁷ Abraham answered, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. ²⁸ What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?" He said, "I will not destroy it, if I find forty-five there." ²⁹ He spoke to him yet again, and said, "What if there are forty found there?" He said, "I will not do it for the forty's sake." ³⁰ He said, "Oh do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?" He said, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." ³¹ He said, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake." ³² He said, "Oh do not let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the ten's sake." ³³ The LORD went his way, as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

¹⁰ Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation." ¹¹ Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said, "O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? ¹² Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, 'He brought them forth for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth?' Turn from your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against your people. ¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'" ¹⁴ The LORD changed his mind about the disaster which he said he would do to his people.

³¹ Moses returned to the LORD, and said, "Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold. ³² Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written."

⁹ He said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance."

¹³ Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them; ¹⁴ and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are in the midst of this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. ¹⁵ Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, ¹⁶ 'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.' ¹⁷ Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, ¹⁸ 'The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation].' ¹⁹ Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now." ²⁰ The LORD said, "I have pardoned according to your word.

⁴⁵ "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." They fell on their faces. ⁴⁶ Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun." ⁴⁷ Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and look, the plague has begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. ⁴⁸ He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

⁷ The people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD, and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." Moses prayed for the people.

¹⁹ For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which the LORD was angry against you to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me that time also. ²⁰ The LORD was very angry with Aaron to destroy him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

³⁴ When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly. ³⁵ They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them.

⁴ It may be the LORD your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.'"

¹ Then the LORD said to me, "Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

³ Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Pray now to the LORD our God for us."

² and said to Jeremiah the prophet, "Please let our petition be presented before you, and pray for us to the LORD your God, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes do see us:

² It happened that, when they made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, "Lord GOD, forgive, I beg you. How could Jacob stand? For he is small." ³ The LORD relented concerning this. "It shall not be," says the LORD. ⁴ This is what the LORD showed me: And look, the LORD called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land. ⁵ Then I said, "Lord GOD, stop, I beg you. How could Jacob stand? For he is small." ⁶ The LORD relented concerning this. "This also shall not be," says the LORD.

²⁴ Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that none of the things which you have spoken happen to me."

²⁶ For such a high priest was indeed fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

¹ My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. ² And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

¹⁶ If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask, and he will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I do not say that he should make a request concerning this.
