⁴ Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

¹ The men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said to Jephthah, "Why did you pass over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house on you with fire." ² And Jephthah said to them, "I and my people had a dispute, and the people of Ammon were oppressing me greatly; and when I called you, you did not save me out of their hand. ³ When I saw that you did not save me, I put my life in my own hands, and passed over against the people of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?" ⁴ Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, "You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, and in the midst of Manasseh." ⁵ The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. It was so, that when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, "Let me go over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No"; ⁶ then they said to him, "Now say 'Shibboleth;'" and he said "Sibboleth"; for he couldn't manage to pronounce it right: then they seized him, and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. There fell at that time of Ephraim forty-two thousand.

⁴¹ Look, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, "Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?" ⁴² All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king's cost? Or has he given us any gifts?" ⁴³ The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, "We have ten parts in the king, and we are the firstborn rather than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?" The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

¹⁴ and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."

¹⁶ When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel. Now see to your own house, David." So Israel departed to their tents.

⁸ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us look one another in the face." ⁹ Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as wife. Then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by, and trampled down the thistle. ¹⁰ You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for why should you meddle to your harm, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you?'"

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.

⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

²¹ But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."

²¹ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps, ²² who "committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth." ²³ Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but instead blessing; because to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing.

⁹ But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, "May the Lord rebuke you."
