¹ Listen, sons, to a father's instruction. Pay attention and know understanding; ² for I give you sound learning. Do not forsake my law. ³ For I was a son to my father, tender and an only child in the sight of my mother. ⁴ He taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live. ⁵ Get wisdom. Get understanding. Do not forget, neither swerve from the words of my mouth. ⁶ Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you. ⁷ Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding. ⁸ Esteem her, and she will exalt you. She will bring you to honor, when you embrace her. ⁹ She will give to your head a garland of grace. She will deliver a crown of splendor to you." ¹⁰ Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many. ¹¹ I have taught you in the way of wisdom. I have led you in straight paths. ¹² When you go, your steps will not be hampered. When you run, you will not stumble. ¹³ Take firm hold of instruction. Do not let her go. Keep her, for she is your life. ¹⁴ Do not enter into the path of the wicked. Do not walk in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, and do not pass by it. Turn from it, and pass on. ¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall. ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like a shining light, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is like darkness. They do not know what they stumble over. ²⁰ My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. ²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. ²² For they are life to him who finds them, and health to all of his body. ²³ Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. ²⁴ Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. ²⁵ Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. ²⁶ Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. ²⁷ Do not turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

¹¹ Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁸ My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching:

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you; ² So as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures: ⁵ then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹ My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding:

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. ²¹ Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck. ²² When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you. ²³ For the commandment is a lamp, and the Law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

⁴ Tell wisdom, "You are my sister." Call understanding your relative,

³² "Now therefore, son, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise. Do not refuse it. ³⁴ Blessed is the man who hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my door posts. ³⁵ For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from the LORD. ³⁶ But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death."

²⁰ Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.

¹⁷ The words of the wise: Incline your ear and hear my words, and apply your heart to my instruction.

¹¹ As you know, as a father with his own children, ¹² we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you to lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory.

¹ Therefore we ought to pay greater attention to the things that were heard, so that we will not drift away.

² My doctrine shall drop as the rain. My speech shall condense as the dew, as the small rain on the tender grass, as the showers on the herb.

⁹ You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

¹⁹ But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;

⁴ For you say, 'My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.'

³ My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart. That which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah.] Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world, ² both low and high, rich and poor together. ³ My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart shall utter understanding.

³⁰ If his children forsake my Law, and do not walk in my ordinances; ³¹ if they break my statutes, and do not keep my commandments; ³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

⁶ Hear, for I will speak excellent things. The opening of my lips is for right things. ⁷ For my mouth speaks truth. Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. ⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them. ⁹ They are all plain to him who understands, right to those who find knowledge.

²⁰ Haven't I written to you thirty excellent things of counsel and knowledge, ²¹ To teach you truth, reliable words, to give sound answers to the ones who sent you?

¹⁶ Jesus therefore answered them, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. ¹⁷ If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself.

⁶ If you instruct the brothers of these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which you have followed.

⁹ holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.

²⁴ David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. The LORD loved him; ²⁵ and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for the LORD's sake.

¹³ Go in to king David, and tell him, 'Did you not, my lord, king, swear to your handmaid, saying, "Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne"? Why then does Adonijah reign?' ¹⁴ And look, while you are still there speaking with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words." ¹⁵ Bathsheba went in to the king into the room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king. ¹⁶ Bathsheba bowed, and showed respect to the king. The king said, "What would you like?" ¹⁷ And she said to him, "My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your handmaid, 'Assuredly Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne.'

⁵ and these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathsheba the daughter of Eliam;

⁵ David said, "Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries. I will therefore make preparation for it." So David prepared abundantly before his death.

¹ David the king said to all the assembly, "Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great; for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

²³ LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

¹⁰ I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of petition; and they will look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Do not be arrogant, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own conceits.

¹⁹ For I have made myself known to him, so that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, so that God may bring to Abraham that which he has spoken to him."

³ You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived: and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; neither shall you walk in their statutes. ⁴ You shall do my ordinances, and you shall keep my statutes, and walk in them: I am the LORD your God. ⁵ You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances; which if a man does, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

⁹ Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children's children;

⁶ These words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart;

¹¹ Now, my son, may the LORD be with you and prosper you, and build the house of the LORD your God, as he has spoken concerning you. ¹² May the LORD give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel; that so you may keep the law of the LORD your God. ¹³ Then you will prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which the LORD gave Moses concerning Israel. Be strong, and courageous. Do not be afraid, neither be dismayed. ¹⁴ Now, look, in my affliction I have prepared for the house of the LORD one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver, and bronze and iron without weight; for it is in abundance. I have also prepared timber and stone; and you may add to them. ¹⁵ There are also workmen with you in abundance, cutters and workers of stone and timber, and all kinds of men who are skillful in every kind of work: ¹⁶ of the gold, the silver, and the bronze, and the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and may the LORD be with you."

¹¹ In my heart I have hidden your word, that I might not sin against you.

¹ My son, do not forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:

² Keep my commandments and live. Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.

⁶ Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

³ Turn your ear, and come to me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the faithful kindnesses of David.

⁵⁰ I know that his commandment is everlasting life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak."

⁴ And fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

⁵ having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in you; which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also.

¹⁵ From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

⁹ Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of everlasting salvation,

² He did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

¹¹ My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned aside.

¹⁸ Our heart has not turned back, neither have our steps strayed from your path,

⁵¹ The arrogant mock me excessively, but I do not swerve from your Law.

¹⁵⁷ Many are my persecutors and my adversaries. I haven't swerved from your testimonies.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn at my reproof. Look, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

² So as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures:

¹³ Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding. ¹⁴ For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her, and those who hold on to her are blessed

⁵ You simple, understand prudence. You fools, be of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ How much better it is to get wisdom than gold. Yes, to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

¹⁶ Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he has no understanding?

¹ An unfriendly man pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.

⁸ He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who keeps understanding shall find good.

²³ Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

⁵ But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without finding fault; and it will be given to him.

¹⁰ For wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. ¹¹ Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you, ¹² to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things;

²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. ²² For they are life to him who finds them, and health to all of his body.

¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

¹⁰ and with all deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

¹⁶ Do not be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. ¹⁷ For when he dies he shall carry nothing away. His glory shall not descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul—and men praise you when you do well for yourself— ¹⁹ he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light. ²⁰ A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

¹⁰⁴ Through your precepts, I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.

⁶ Getting treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor for those who seek death.

⁴ I made myself great works. I built myself houses. I planted myself vineyards. ⁵ I made myself gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit. ⁶ I made myself pools of water, to water from it the forest where trees were reared. ⁷ I bought male servants and female servants, and had servants born in my house. I also had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all who were before me in Jerusalem; ⁸ I also gathered silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces. I got myself male and female singers, and the delights of the sons of men—musical instruments, and that of all sorts. ⁹ So I was great, and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also remained with me.

⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

¹² For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him who rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.

⁴⁴ "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field. ⁴⁵ "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls, ⁴⁶ and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

³⁶ For what does it profit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? ³⁷ Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?

⁴² but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her."

²⁰ "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

⁸ More than that, I count all things to be a loss compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them nothing but refuse, that I may gain Christ

³⁰ "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

⁵ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give you." ⁶ Solomon said, "You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. ⁸ Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can't be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?" ¹⁰ The speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice; ¹² look, I have done according to your word. Look, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you. ¹³ I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you, all your days.

³⁵ The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.

⁴ The result of humility and the fear of the LORD is wealth, honor, and life.

³ And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.

⁹ for they will be a garland to grace your head, and a necklace around your neck.

²² so they will be life to your soul, and grace for your neck.

³¹ Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is found in the path of righteousness.

⁵ In that day, the LORD of hosts will become a crown of glory, and a diadem of beauty, to the residue of his people;

⁹ In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety; not just with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing; ¹⁰ but (which becomes women professing godliness) with good works.

⁷ You made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor. ⁸ You have put all things under his feet." For in that he put all things under him, he left nothing that is not under him. But now we do not yet see that all things are under him. ⁹ But we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone.

⁴ but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.

⁴ When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

²¹ He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.

¹⁶ "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

² that you might fear the LORD your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, you, and your son, and your son's son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.

²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you;

² for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you.

¹⁰ Receive my instruction rather than silver; knowledge rather than choice gold.

²⁰ "Yet hear the word of the LORD, you women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation.

³² What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness. ³³ He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.

¹³ For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as a human word, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.

¹⁵ The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

⁵ Look, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it.

²³ Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will instruct you in the good and the right way. ²⁴ Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you.

³ He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

⁴ Show me your ways, LORD. Teach me your paths. ⁵ Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

⁴ He taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live.

²⁰ I walk in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice;

⁹ Further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

¹⁰ and said, "Full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

³⁷ You have enlarged my steps under me. My feet have not slipped.

⁷ The steps of his strength shall be shortened. His own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he wanders into its mesh.

³⁶ You have enlarged my steps under me, My feet have not slipped.

¹¹ For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. ¹² In their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

¹⁶⁵ Those who love your Law have great peace. Nothing causes them to stumble.

²³ Then you shall walk in your way securely, and your foot won't stumble.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is like darkness. They do not know what they stumble over.

²² When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.

⁹ They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.'"

⁹ Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."

³² Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone; ³³ even as it is written, "Look, I am laying in Zion a stumbling stone and a rock to trip over; and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame."

⁸ and, "a stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over." For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.

¹⁰ He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. ¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

²⁶ Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But Jacob said, "I wonʼt let you go unless you bless me."

⁴⁷ For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it."

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her, and those who hold on to her are blessed

⁴ I had scarcely passed from them, when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, into the chamber of her who conceived me.

²⁷ Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. ²⁸ They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further. ²⁹ They urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over." He went in to stay with them.

³⁹ From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, "He told me everything that I did." ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them. He stayed there two days. ⁴¹ Many more believed because of his word. ⁴² They said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Savior of the world."

⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of everlasting life.

⁴² They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

²³ who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain true to the Lord.

²¹ but test all things; hold firmly that which is good.

¹³ "I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. You hold firmly to my name, and did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas, my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

¹¹ They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony. They did not love their life, even to death.

¹ Blessed is the one who doesn't follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path of sinners, or join in with scoffers.

⁴ I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path,

⁶ Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding."

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

³³ Do not be deceived. "Bad company corrupts good morals."

⁷ "Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent and righteous: for I will not justify the wicked.

¹⁴ If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away. Do not let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.

²³ If you return to Shaddai, you shall be built up, if you put away unrighteousness far from your tents.

⁸ Remove your way far from her. Do not come near the door of her house,

⁵ Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

¹⁵ He who walks righteously, and speaks blamelessly; He who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing to take a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from looking at evil—

¹¹ Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them.

²² Abstain from every form of evil.

⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn't abhor evil.

¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can't rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds. When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

⁶⁶ As soon as it was day, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,

²⁸ They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and insatiable for sin, enticing unstable people, having a heart trained in greed. Children under a curse.

⁵ Look, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food. The wilderness yields them bread for their children. ⁶ They cut their provender in the field. They glean the vineyard of the wicked.

⁴ Have all evildoers no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread? They do not call on the LORD.

¹⁷ "Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant."

¹⁷ Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men. They watch, as fowlers lie in wait. They set a trap. They catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit. Therefore they have become great, and grew rich. ²⁸ They have grown fat. They shine; yes, they excel in deeds of wickedness. They do not plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and they do not judge the right of the needy.

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her princes in its midst, like a roaring lion ravening the prey: they have devoured souls; they take treasure and precious things; they have made her widows many in its midst. ²⁶ Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned my holy things: they have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hidden their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her officials in its midst are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain. ²⁸ Her prophets have plastered for them with whitewash, seeing false visions, and divining lies to them, saying, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,' when the LORD has not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery; yes, they have troubled the poor and needy, and have oppressed the foreigner wrongfully.

⁴ Hear this, you who trample the needy, and destroy the poor of the land, ⁵ saying, 'When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel large, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit; ⁶ that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the sweepings with the wheat?'"

⁵ Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray; for those who feed their teeth, they proclaim, "Peace." and whoever doesn't provide for their mouths, they prepare war against him:

¹² Her rich men are full of violence, her inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their speech.

³ Her princes in the midst of her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing until the next day.

¹³ "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you devour the houses of widows, and for show make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

⁴ Look, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.

⁴ shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through clear shining after rain.'

¹⁷ Life shall be clearer than the noonday. Though there is darkness, it shall be as the morning.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come forth like gold.

⁷ They go from strength to strength. Everyone of them appears before God in Zion.

⁷ The way of the righteous is level. O Just One, you make the path of the righteous smooth.

³ Let us acknowledge the LORD. Let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, The LORD will appear. He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth."

⁶ It will happen in that day, that there will not be light, cold, or frost. ⁷ It will be a unique day which is known to the LORD; not day, and not night; but it will come to pass, that at evening time there will be light.

¹⁴ You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.

¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before people, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

⁴⁵ that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

¹² Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."

¹⁸ But we all, with unveiled face looking as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

¹⁵ that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

¹⁹ We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts:

¹⁸ But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever.

²³ The city has no need for the sun, neither of the moon, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

⁵ There will no longer be any night, and they have no need for the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness. For no man will prevail by strength.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night.

²⁵ They grope in the dark without light. He makes them stagger like a drunken man.

⁵ "Yes, the light of the wicked shall be put out, The spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent. His lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

¹³ who forsake the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

⁹ Therefore is justice far from us, neither does righteousness overtake us: we look for light, but, look, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity. ¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he causes darkness, and before your feet stumble on the dark mountains, and, while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it gross darkness.

¹² "Therefore their way shall be to them as slippery places in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall in it; for I will bring evil on them, even the year of their visitation," says the LORD.

²³ And then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'

¹⁴ Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

¹⁰ But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."

³⁵ Jesus therefore said to them, "Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness does not overtake you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹ [A contemplation by Asaph.] Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.

¹² So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. ²¹ Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

¹ My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you.

⁵ While he was still speaking, look, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And look, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him."

⁸ to do your will, O God, I desired. And your Law is within my heart."

³ Do not let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

²¹ My son, let them not depart from your eyes. Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

¹ My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you. ² Keep my commandments and live. Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.

⁸ It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones.

¹⁰ Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

⁶ 'Look, I will bring it health and healing, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them abundance of peace and truth.

²³ Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. ²⁴ See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

⁷ Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

¹⁶ A gracious woman obtains honor, but she who hates virtue makes a throne for dishonor. The slothful become destitute, and ruthless men grab wealth.

³ He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

⁵ Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked: whoever guards his soul stays from them.

¹⁹ Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

²⁶ One who trusts in himself is a fool; but one who walks in wisdom is kept safe.

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good person out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

²¹ For from within, out of a person's heart, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, ²² covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

³⁸ Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

⁴⁵ The good person out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

¹⁵ looking carefully lest there be anyone who falls short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by it many become defiled;

¹⁴ But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.

¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth;

⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

²⁰ One who has a perverse heart doesn't find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?

²⁵ Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another. ²⁶ "Be angry, but do not sin." Do not let the sun go down on your anger, ²⁷ neither give place to the devil. ²⁸ Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need. ²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. ³⁰ Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. ³¹ Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.

⁸ but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth.

⁵ constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

²¹ Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

²⁶ If anyone thinks himself to be religious while he does not control his tongue, but deceives his heart, this one's religion is worthless.

¹ Putting away therefore all wickedness, and all deceit, and hypocrisy, and envy, and all slander,

¹ "I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

³⁷ Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things. Revive me in your ways.

⁵ Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.

²² "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.

²³ The steps of a man are established by the LORD, and he delights in his way.

² He also brought me up out of a pit of tumult, out of the miry clay; and he set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

⁵ Oh that my ways were steadfast to obey your statutes.

⁵⁹ I considered my ways, and turned my steps to your statutes.

⁶ She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn't know it.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD. He examines all his paths.

²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

⁵ Now therefore this is what the LORD of hosts says: Consider your ways.

⁷ This is what the LORD of hosts says: "Consider your ways.

¹⁵ Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

¹⁷ Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

¹³ to the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

³ But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you, and guard you from the evil one.

¹³ and make straight paths for your feet, so that which is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

³² You shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God has commanded you: you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

³² Whatever thing I command you, that you shall observe to do: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

¹⁴ and shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

⁷ Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

¹⁷ The highway of the upright is to depart from evil. He who keeps his way preserves his soul.

¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.

⁹ Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.
