¹ It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. ² The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Kilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there. ³ Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. ⁴ And they took for themselves wives from the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years. ⁵ Mahlon and Kilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband. ⁶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. ⁷ She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. ⁸ Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me. ⁹ The LORD grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband." Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept. ¹⁰ They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people." ¹¹ Naomi said, "Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? ¹² Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, 'I have hope,' if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons; ¹³ would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of the LORD has gone out against me." ¹⁴ They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people, but Ruth clung to her. ¹⁵ She said, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law. ¹⁶ Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay; your people shall be my people, and your God my God; ¹⁷ where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me." ¹⁸ When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her. ¹⁹ So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, "Is this Naomi?" ²⁰ She said to them, "Do not call me Naomi. Call me Marah; for Shaddai has dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and Shaddai has afflicted me?" ²² So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

¹⁰ There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, because the famine was severe in the land.

¹⁹ I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze;

²³ Your sky that is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be iron. ²⁴ The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust: from the sky shall it come down on you, until you are destroyed.

³⁸ You shall carry much seed out into the field, and shall gather little in; for the locust shall consume it.

¹⁶ The LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. ¹⁷ Yet they did not listen to their judges; for they played the prostitute after other gods, and bowed themselves down to them: they turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not do so. ¹⁸ When the LORD raised up judges for them, then the LORD was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it grieved the LORD because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.

⁸ After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

⁸ The man departed out of the city, out of Bethlehem Judah, to live where he could find a place, and he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he traveled.

¹ It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a secondary wife from Bethlehem Judah. ² His secondary wife was angry with him and went away from him to her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah, and was there about four months.

¹ There was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of the LORD. The LORD said, "It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Gibeonites."

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except by my word." ² And the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ³ "Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, that is near the Jordan. ⁴ And it shall be that you will drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; for he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, that is near the Jordan. ⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening. And he drank from the wadi. ⁷ And it happened after a while that the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land. ⁸ The word of the LORD came to him, saying, ⁹ "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Look, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you." ¹⁰ So he got up and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, look, a widow was there gathering wood. And he called to her, and said, "Please bring me a little water in a pitcher, that I may drink." ¹¹ And as she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand." ¹² She said, "As the LORD your God lives, I do not have anything baked, except a handful of flour in a jar, and a little oil in a jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die."

² So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. And the famine was severe in Samaria.

¹ Now Elisha had spoken to the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, "Arise, and go, you and your household, and stay for a while wherever you can; for the LORD has called for a famine. It shall also come on the land seven years." ² The woman arose, and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household, and lived in the land of the Philistines seven years.

³⁴ and a fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

¹³ "Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass, and I stretch out my hand on it, and break the staff of its bread, and send famine on it, and cut off from it man and animal;

²¹ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'How much more when I send my four severe judgments on Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the evil animals, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and animal.

¹⁰ The field is laid waste. The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed, The new wine has dried up, and the oil languishes. ¹¹ Be confounded, you farmers. Wail, you vineyard keepers; for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field has perished.

¹⁶ Isn't the food cut off before our eyes; joy and gladness from the house of our God? ¹⁷ The seeds shrivel under their shovels. The storehouses are laid desolate. The granaries are broken down, for the grain has withered. ¹⁸ How the animals groan. The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Even the flocks of sheep suffer. ¹⁹ LORD, I cry to you, for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

⁶ "I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in every town; yet you haven't returned to me," says the LORD.

¹⁹ So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

¹ Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Toah, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

²¹ Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

² But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come forth to me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

¹ Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor has come to take for himself my two children to be slaves."

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

⁶ For whom the Lord loves he disciplines, and punishes every son he accepts."

¹⁰ For they indeed, for a few days, disciplined us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All discipline seems for the moment painful, not joyful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.

³ neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, nor shall you take his daughter for your son.

³ An Ammonite or a Moabite shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation shall none belonging to them enter into the assembly of the LORD forever:

¹ Now king Solomon loved women, and he took many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites; ² of the nations concerning which the LORD said to the children of Israel, "You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you; for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love.

⁵ and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed was the father of Jesse,

³⁹ "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god besides me. I kill, and I make alive. I wound, and I heal; and there is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

³⁰ If his children forsake my Law, and do not walk in my ordinances; ³¹ if they break my statutes, and do not keep my commandments; ³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

²¹ Then you will say in your heart, 'Who has conceived these for me, since I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering back and forth? Who has brought up these? Look, I was left alone; these, where were they?'"

¹⁹ "Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backsliding shall reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you," says the Lord, GOD of hosts.

²⁵ Now there were with us seven brothers. The first married and died, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. ²⁶ In like manner the second also, and the third, to the seventh. ²⁷ After them all, the woman died.

¹² And when he drew near to the gate of the city, then look, a man who was dead was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her.

¹ Now God visited Sarah as he had said, and did to Sarah as he had spoken.

²⁰ Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will watch over me on this journey I am taking, and will give me food to eat, and clothing to put on,

¹⁵ Then he blessed Joseph, and said, "The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,

²⁵ Then Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath, saying, "God will surely take care of you. Then you must carry up my bones from here."

¹⁶ Go, and gather the elders of the children of Israel together, and tell them, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt;

³¹ The people believed, and when they heard that God had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.

⁴ Then said the LORD to Moses, "Look, I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law, or not. ⁵ It shall come to pass on the sixth day, that they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily." ⁶ Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, "At evening, then you shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

²¹ The LORD visited Hannah, and she bore more children, three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before the LORD.

¹⁴ He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food out of the earth: ¹⁵ wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man's heart.

⁵ He has given food to those who fear him. He always remembers his covenant.

¹⁵ I will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.

¹⁵ The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season.

⁷ who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners.

¹⁴ He makes peace in your borders. He fills you with the finest of the wheat.

⁸ Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me;

¹⁰ For as the rain comes down and the snow from the sky, and doesn't return there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and bud, and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater;

¹⁰ "For thus says the LORD, 'After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

⁷ The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for the LORD, their God, will visit them, and restore them.

¹¹ Give us today our daily bread.

⁶⁸ "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and worked redemption for his people;

⁴⁴ and will dash you and your children within you to the ground. They will not leave in you one stone on another, because you did not know the time of your visitation."

⁸ But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.

¹² having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.

²⁷ Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

¹⁰ They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people."

¹⁴ They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people, but Ruth clung to her.

³ It happened at the seven years' end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines. Then she went forth to cry to the king for her house and for her land.

¹⁵ If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." ¹⁶ The people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; ¹⁷ for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed. ¹⁸ The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God." ¹⁹ Joshua said to the people, "You can't serve the LORD; for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins. ²⁰ If you forsake the LORD, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after he has done you good." ²¹ The people said to Joshua, "No; but we will serve the LORD." ²² Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen you the LORD, to serve him." They said, "We are witnesses." ²³ "Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel." ²⁴ The people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God, and we will listen to his voice." ²⁵ So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. ²⁶ Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD. ²⁷ Joshua said to all the people, "Look, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God." ²⁸ So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

²⁰ Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead." Naomi said to her, "The man is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen."

²⁵ Now large crowds were going with him. He turned and said to them, ²⁶ "If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. ²⁷ Whoever does not bear his own cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. ²⁸ For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? ²⁹ Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him, ³⁰ saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.' ³¹ Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an envoy, and asks for conditions of peace. ³³ So therefore whoever of you who does not renounce all that he has, he cannot be my disciple.

²² Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

² "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise: ³ "that it may be well with you, and that you may live long in the land."

¹⁸ But I have received everything in full, and I have an abundance. I am fully supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable and well-pleasing sacrifice to God. ¹⁹ And my God will supply all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

¹⁸ Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

²⁴ knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

¹⁶ May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, ¹⁷ but when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant to him to find the Lord's mercy in that day); and in how many things he served at Ephesus, you know very well.

²⁷ He came near, and kissed him. He smelled the scent of his clothing, and blessed him, and said, "Look, the scent of my son is as the scent of a field which God has blessed.

¹¹ Jacob kissed Rachel, and wept loudly.

¹⁵ And he kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and after that his brothers talked with him.

¹ Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?

³⁷ They all wept a lot, and fell on Paul's neck and kissed him,

³ As for the holy ones who are in the land, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

⁶³ I am a friend of all those who fear you, of those who observe your precepts.

²³ Thus says the LORD of hosts: "In those days, ten men will take hold, out of all the languages of the nations, they will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, 'We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'"

¹¹ Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Remain a widow in your fatherʼs house until my son Shelah is grown up." For he thought, "I do not want him to die too, like his brothers." So Tamar went and lived in her fatherʼs house.

⁵ If brothers dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son, the wife of the dead shall not be married outside to a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in to her, and take her to him as wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.

¹⁷ Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?"

⁹ Let no one be enrolled as a widow under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,

¹⁵ Moreover the hand of God was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

¹⁵ Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn to them: and they were in great distress.

¹¹ And they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, so that it will not kill us and our people." For there was a very heavy terror of death throughout all the city when the ark of God arrived there.

²¹ "Have pity on me, have pity on me, you my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy on me to my destruction in the heat of summer. Selah.

² For your arrows have pierced me, your hand presses hard on me.

⁹ I was mute. I did not open my mouth, because you did it. ¹⁰ Remove your scourge away from me. I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

²⁸ And you did not allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly.

⁵⁵ Early in the morning, Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them. Laban departed and returned to his place.

⁴ But you who were faithful to the LORD your God are all alive this day.

²⁰ You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve him; and you shall cling to him, and you shall swear by his name.

²⁰ He left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." He said to him, "Go back again; for what have I done to you?"

¹⁷ A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.

²⁴ A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

¹ For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with them, and they will unite with the house of Jacob.

³⁷ Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

²² But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions.

²¹ Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross." ²² But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.

⁶⁶ At this, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. ⁶⁷ Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You do not also want to go away, do you?" ⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of everlasting life. ⁶⁹ We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

³⁴ But some people joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

¹⁰ for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

³⁹ But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.

¹⁵ If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

¹⁹ Joshua said to the people, "You can't serve the LORD; for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins.

²⁴ Won't you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever the LORD our God has driven out from before us, we will possess.

¹⁹ then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, "Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner, and also an exile. Return to your own place. ²⁰ You came only yesterday. Should I today make you wander about with us, since I go I know not where? Go back, and take your brothers with you, and may the LORD show you kindness and truth."

² Elijah said to Elisha, "Please wait here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

⁵ But as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways, The LORD will lead them away with evildoers. Peace be on Israel.

⁶ those who have turned back from following the LORD, and those who haven't sought the LORD nor inquired after him.

²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

²⁸ They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

³⁸ But the righteous will live by faith, and if he holds back, my soul has no pleasure in him."

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us.

¹⁸ The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God."

¹¹ Boaz answered her, "It has fully been shown to me, all that you have done to your mother-in-law since the death of your husband; and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn't know before. ¹² May the LORD repay your work, and a full reward be given you from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge."

²¹ Ittai answered the king, and said, "As the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, even there also will your servant be."

² Elijah said to Elisha, "Please wait here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. ³ The sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from your head today?" He said, "Yes, I know it; hold your peace." ⁴ Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please wait here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." He said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho. ⁵ The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from your head today?" He answered, "Yes, I know it. Hold your peace." ⁶ Elijah said to him, "Please wait here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." He said, "As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you." They both went on.

¹⁰ Listen, daughter, consider, and turn your ear. Forget your own people, and also your father's house.

⁴⁷ The king answered Daniel and said, "Surely your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing you have been able to reveal this secret."

²⁹ Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything evil against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be reduced to rubble; because there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way."

³⁷ Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble."

⁴ "Yet I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; and you shall acknowledge no god but me, and besides me there is no savior.

¹⁹ Then a scribe came, and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

²⁸ They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further. ²⁹ They urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over." He went in to stay with them.

³⁷ Peter said to him, "Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

¹³ Then Paul answered, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."

¹⁶ What agreement has a temple of God with idols? For we are a temple of the living God. Even as God said, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people." ¹⁷ Therefore, "'Go out from their midst, and be separate,' says the Lord, 'and touch no unclean thing,' and I will receive you. ¹⁸ "And I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters," says the Lord of hosts.

⁹ For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you; and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God,

⁴ These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed from among humanity, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb.

¹⁷ He said, "What is the thing that he has spoken to you? Please do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you in your ears."

²² God do so to David, and more also, if I leave of all that belongs to him by the morning light so much as one who urinates on a wall."

⁹ God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as the LORD has sworn to David, I do not do even so to him;

³⁵ Then all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, "God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or anything else, until the sun goes down."

¹³ And say to Amasa, 'Arenʼt you my bone and my flesh? Now then, God do so to me, and more also, if you aren't commander of the army before me continually in place of Joab. '"

²³ Then king Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, "God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."

¹⁰ Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, "The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me."

³¹ Then he said, "God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stay on him this day."

²³ who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain true to the Lord.

²⁴ But I make my life an account of nothing precious to myself, so that I may finish my race, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.

⁴² They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

¹⁴ When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, "The Lord's will be done."

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days, whose feet carried her far away to travel?

¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at you, they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, "Is this the city that men called 'The perfection of beauty,' 'The joy of the whole earth'?"

¹⁰ When he had come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred up, saying, "Who is this?"

¹ When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Walk before me, and be blameless.

¹⁴ And may El Shaddai grant you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am deprived of my children, then I am deprived."

³ And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El Shaddai, but I did not make myself known to them by my name 'the LORD.'

¹⁷ "Look, blessed is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of Shaddai.

⁴ For the arrows of Shaddai are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁷ "Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of Shaddai?

⁶ know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net.

¹⁴ For all day long have I been plagued, and punished every morning.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.

¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

¹ I am the man that has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. ² He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light. ³ Surely against me he turns his hand again and again all the day. ⁴ My flesh and my skin he has made old; he has broken my bones. ⁵ He has built against me, and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. ⁶ He has made me to dwell in dark places, like those that have been long dead. ⁷ He has walled me in, so I can't escape; he has made my chains heavy. ⁸ Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer. ⁹ He has walled up my ways with cut stone; he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in hiding. ¹¹ He has obstructed my path, and torn me in pieces; he has made me desolate. ¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to pierce my inward parts. ¹⁴ I have become a laughingstock to all peoples, and their song all the day. ¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness, he has given me in full measure wormwood. ¹⁶ He has also broken my teeth with gravel; he has pressed me down in the dust. ¹⁷ You have removed my soul far away from peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. ¹⁸ And I said, "My strength and my hope has perished from the LORD." ¹⁹ Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. ²⁰ My soul considers them, and is depressed.

¹¹ All discipline seems for the moment painful, not joyful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.

⁸ "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God of hosts, "who is and who was and who is to come."

²² I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God of hosts and the Lamb are its temple.

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's. He has set the world on them.

²¹ He said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD."

¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me.

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:

⁸ You have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.

³¹ The flax and the barley were struck, for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bloom. ³² But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are late.

²³ So she stayed close to the maidens of Boaz, to glean to the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and she lived with her mother-in-law.

⁹ He delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the mountain before the LORD, and all seven of them fell together. They were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.
