¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some by longing for it have been led away from the faith. They have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁴ Laban said: »You are indeed my own flesh and blood.« Jacob stayed there a whole month.

³¹ Jehovah saw that Leah was loved less, so he made it possible for her to have children. But Rachel had none. ³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, because she said: »Certainly, Jehovah has seen my misery. Now my husband will love me!« ³³ She became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She said: »Certainly, Jehovah has heard that I am unloved. He has also given me this son.« She named him Simeon. ³⁴ She became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She said: »Now at last my husband will become attached to me because I have given him three sons.« She named him Levi. ³⁵ Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She said: »This time I will praise Jehovah.« So she named him Judah (Praise). Then she stopped having children.

¹⁶ and asked her to sleep with him. She asked: »What will you give me if I do?«

⁷ »Do not make false accusations. Do not put an innocent person to death. I will condemn anyone who does this evil thing. ⁸ »Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe makes the discerning blind to what is right and perverts the words of the righteous.

¹⁹ »Never pervert justice. Always be impartial. Never take a bribe, because bribes blind wise people and deny justice to those who are in the right.

⁴ »This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt. It is because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. ⁵ »Jehovah your God was not willing to listen to Balaam. Jehovah your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because Jehovah your God loves you.

¹⁸ »Do not bring the hire (fee) of a harlot or the wages of a dog into the house of Jehovah your God for any vow offering. Both of these are an abomination to Jehovah your God.

¹⁰ Micah said: »Stay here with me. Be my adviser and priest. I will give you ten pieces of silver a year along with some clothes, and your food.« ¹¹ The young Levite agreed to stay with Micah. He became like a son to him.

¹⁹ They told him: »Be quiet. Do not say a word. Come with us and be our priest and adviser. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?« ²⁰ This filled the priest with joy. He took the sacred objects and went along with them.

²⁹ They changed its name from Laish to Dan, after their ancestor Dan, the son of Jacob. ³⁰ The Danites set up the idol to be worshiped, and Jonathan, the son of Gershom and grandson of Moses, served as a priest for the Danites. His descendants served as their priests until the people were taken away into exile. ³¹ Micah’s idol remained there as long as the Tent where God was worshiped was at Shiloh.

¹⁰ »I once seized a man who told me that Saul had died. He thought he was bringing good news. I killed him in Ziklag to reward him for his news. ¹¹ »How much more should I reward wicked men who kill an innocent man on his own bed in his home? Jehovah has rescued me from every trouble. I solemnly swear, as Jehovah lives, I will now seek revenge for his murder and rid the land of you.«

²⁷ »Naaman's leprosy will come upon you. You and your descendants will have it from generation to generation!« When Gehazi left, he had the disease. His skin was as white as snow.

¹⁰ Very much pain awaits wicked people, but loving-kindness and mercy surrounds those who trust Jehovah.

¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust dishonest gain. Greed takes away the life of its owner.

³¹ »Now you will get what you deserve for what you have done. Your own advice will make you sick.

²³ Your rulers are rebels, friends with thieves. They all love bribes and run after gifts. They never defend orphans. They do not listen to the widows' pleas.

¹¹ They are dogs with mighty appetites. They never have enough! They are shepherds who lack understanding. They all turn to their own way and each one seeks dishonest (unjust) gain.

²⁷ »Like cages filled with birds, their houses are filled with deceit. That is why they become powerful and rich. ²⁸ »They grow big and fat. Their evil deeds have no limits. They have no respect for the rights of others. They have no respect for the rights of orphans. But they still prosper. They do not defend the rights of the poor.

¹⁹ ‘»You dishonor me in front of my people for a few handfuls of barley and a few pieces of bread. You kill people who should not die. You spare the lives of people who should not live. You lie to my people who are willing to listen.«’

³³ »Prostitutes accept money for having sex, but you bribe men from everywhere to have sex with you.

¹² »Some of your people murder for pay. Some charge interest on the loans they make to other Israelites and get rich by taking advantage of them. They have forgotten me. The Lord Jehovah has spoken.

¹¹ The leaders judge for a bribe, and the priests teach for wages! The prophets predict for money yet they rely on Jehovah when they say: »Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? No evil will come upon us.«

³ They diligently seek to do evil with their hands. The prince asks and the judge is ready for a bribe. The great man utters his own evil desire. They weave it together. ⁴ The best of them is as a brier. The most upright is worse than a thorn hedge! Your watchmen’s day has come. Your visitation has come. Now you will be perplexed.

¹⁰ Jehovah of Hosts continues: »Is there one among you who will shut the Temple doors to prevent lighting a useless fire on my altar. I am not pleased with you! I will not accept the offerings you bring me.

¹³ »Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You close the kingdom of heaven to people. You do not invite others to enter nor do you enter.

⁹ Those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts. These draw men into ruin and destruction.

²¹ Some have professed this knowledge and erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you.

¹⁰ For Demas forsook me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

³ not addicted to wine, not quarrelsome; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;

¹¹ They must be stopped. Their mouths must be shut up, for they subvert entire households. They teach things that should not be taught, for the sake of dishonest gain.

¹⁹ My brothers, if any among you strays from the truth, and one brings him back,

⁷ He delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked. ⁸ That righteous man that dwelled among them was tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard.
