²⁹ When God destroyed the cities of the valley where Lot was living, he kept Abraham in mind and allowed Lot to escape to safety.

¹ God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark. He sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.

² »I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing.

²³ Abraham came near and said: »Will you destroy the righteous with the wicked? ²⁴ »Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city. Would you also destroy the place and not spare it because the righteous people are there? ²⁵ »Surely you would not do that! Would you slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked? Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?« ²⁶ Jehovah said: »If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, I will spare the entire place for their sakes.« ²⁷ Then Abraham answered and said: »Indeed now, I who am only dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to Jehovah: ²⁸ »Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous. Would you destroy the entire city for lack of five?« So He (God) said: »If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.« ²⁹ Abraham spoke again: »Suppose there should be forty found there?« God replied: »I will not do it for the sake of forty.« ³⁰ Abraham then said: »Do not be angry, and let me speak. Suppose thirty should be found there?« God replied: »I will not do it if I find thirty there.« ³¹ Abraham then said: »Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to Jehovah: Suppose twenty should be found there?« God replied: »I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.« ³² Abraham again queried: »Please do not be angry as I speak once more: Suppose ten should be found there?« God said: »I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.« ³³ Jehovah went his way as soon as he finished speaking with Abraham. Abraham returned to his place.

²² Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and opened her womb.

⁵ »It is not because you have been living right or because you are so honest that you enter to take possession of their land. It is because these people are so wicked that Jehovah your God is forcing them out of your way. It is also because Jehovah wants to confirm the promise he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

⁷ Do not remember the sins of my youth or my rebellious ways. O Jehovah, remember me in keeping with your loving kindness and your goodness.

⁸ He has remembered his covenant forever! It is the word he commanded to a thousand generations.

⁴² He remembered his holy word to his servant Abraham.

⁴ Remember me, O Jehovah, with favor toward your people. Visit me with your salvation.

²³ He remembered us in our low estate. His loving kindness is everlasting.

²⁰ Jehovah protects all who love him, but he will destroy the wicked.

³¹ »‘Then you will remember your evil ways and the bad things that you did. You will hate yourselves for all these wicked and disgusting things. ³² »‘I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake,’ proclaims the Lord Jehovah. ‘Be ashamed and disgraced because of your ways, people of Israel.’

⁸ »How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboiim? My heart is changed within me. All my compassion is aroused.
