² Abraham said to the senior servant of his household who was in charge of all that he owned: »Take a solemn oath.

² Abram said: »O Jehovah God, what will you give me? I continue childless! The heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus.«

⁹ The servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master. He swore to him concerning this matter. ¹⁰ The servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and then set out with a variety of good things of his master’s in his hand. He arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

⁴ Potiphar was pleased with him and made him his personal servant. He put him in charge of his house and everything he owned. ⁵ Jehovah blessed the Egyptian’s household and everything he had in his house and in his fields because of Joseph. ⁶ Potiphar turned over everything he had to the care of Joseph. He did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Joseph was well built and good-looking.

⁸ He refused, and said to her: »My master does not have to concern himself with anything in the house, because I am here. He has put me in charge of everything he has. ⁹ »No one in this house is greater than I. He has kept nothing back from me except you. You are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?«

¹ Later, Joseph told the servant in charge of his house: »Fill the men’s grain sacks with as much as they can hold and put their money in the sacks.

²⁹ When the time drew near for him to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him: »Place your hand under my thighs and make a solemn vow that you will not bury me in Egypt.

²⁴ All the officials and soldiers, and even all of David’s other sons, promised to be loyal to Solomon as king.

¹⁷ Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching.
