⁴³ Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the sheiks of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of the Edomites.

¹⁵ »The sheiks (chiefs) of Edom were dismayed. The leaders of Moab are griped with fear. The inhabitants of Canaan are filled with fear.

¹⁴ Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said: »This is what your brother Israel says: ‘You know all the hardships we have had. ¹⁵ »‘Our ancestors went to Egypt. If you try, we will march out and attack you.« ¹⁹ The people of Israel said: »We will stay on the main road. If we, or our animals, drink any of your water we will pay for it. All we want is to pass through.« ²⁰ The Edomites repeated: »We refuse!« Then they marched out with a powerful army to attack the people of Israel. ²¹ The Edomites would not let the Israelites pass through their territory. So the Israelites turned and went another way.

⁷ »Do not detest an Edomite for he is your brother. Do not detest an Egyptian, because you were an alien (strangers) (guests) in his land.

²⁰ Edom revolted against Judah and became an independent kingdom.
