¹¹ »This belt is tight around your waist, and that is how tightly I held onto the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. I wanted them to be my people. I wanted to make them famous, so that other nations would praise and honor me, but they refused to obey me.

⁵ ‘If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine. ⁶ ‘You will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation. These are the words you must speak to the children of Israel.’«

⁷ »What great nation is there, who has God so near to them? For we call on Jehovah our God for all things!

¹⁸ »Jehovah declared you to be his people and a treasured possession. Obey his commandments and receive his promise.

¹⁰ »He found his people in a desert land, in a barren place where animals howl. He guarded them, took care of them, and protected them because they were the precious apple (pupil) of his eye. ¹¹ »Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, spreads its wings to catch them, and carries them on its wings, ¹² »Jehovah alone led his people. No foreign god was with them. ¹³ »He made him ride on the heights of the earth and fed him with the produce of the fields. He drank the blood-red wine of grapes. ¹⁵ »Jeshurun (Israel) grew fat and disrespectful. You got fat! You were stuffed! You over eat! He abandoned the God who made him and scornfully treated the rock of his salvation.

¹¹ »My people did not listen to my voice. Israel did not obey me.

⁴ For Jehovah has chosen Jacob for Himself and Israel for his special treasure (property).

²⁰ He has done nothing like this for any other nation. The other nations do not know the decisions he has handed down. Praise Jehovah!

²¹ »I have formed these people for myself. They will praise me.

¹⁷ »‘I set watchmen over you. I said: ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said: ‘We will not listen!’«

²⁶ »Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear. Instead they stiffened their neck (became stubborn). They did more evil than their fathers.

¹² They will be called the holy people reclaimed (repurchased) by Jehovah! You will be called »searched for,« a »City Not Deserted.«

¹⁰ »The people of Judah are evil and stubborn. They do not listen to me. They do whatever they want and even worship other gods. When I am finished with these people, they will be good for nothing, just like this linen belt.

²⁰ »You set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. Even to this day both in Israel and among mankind you have made a name for yourself.

⁹ »Jerusalem will be my source of joy, praise, and honor. All the nations on earth will hear about all the blessings that I will give to Jerusalem. They will be afraid and tremble because of all the prosperity that I will provide for it.’«

³⁷ »The Father who sent me testifies about me. You have not heard his voice nor seen him at any time. ³⁸ »You do not have his word dwelling in you. This is because you do not believe in the person he has sent. ³⁹ »You search (investigate) (study) the Scriptures because you think that in them you have everlasting life. These Scriptures testify about me. ⁴⁰ »And yet you will not come to me that you may have life.

⁹ You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for God’s own possession, that you may show the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
