²⁰ »You sit and talk against your own brother. You slander your own mother's son.

⁶ Return you people of Israel, return to the one whom you have so violently rebelled against.

⁴ Woe to the sinful nation, people heavy with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, sons who are corrupt! They have forsaken Jehovah! They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They have turned away from him. ⁵ Why do you still want to be beaten? Why do you continue to rebel? Your whole head is infected. Your whole heart is sick.

²³ »These people are stubborn and rebellious. They have turned aside and departed from me.

³⁰ They call them rejected silver, for Jehovah has rejected them.

⁴ »Let everyone be on guard against his neighbor. Do not trust any brother because every brother deals craftily (cunningly), and every neighbor goes about as a slanderer.

¹⁸ Then they said: »Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the wise man, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike him with our tongue, and let us pay no attention to any of his words.«

¹⁰ For I have heard the whispering of many: »Terror on every side! Denounce him; yes, let us denounce him!« All my trusted friends are watching for my fall. They say: »Perhaps he will be deceived, so that we may prevail against him and take our revenge on him.«

¹⁸ »Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me. All of them are the copper, tin, iron and lead in the furnace. They are the dross of silver. ¹⁹ »Therefore, the Lord Jehovah says: ‘I am going to gather you into Jerusalem. This is because all of you have become dross (impure) (worthless). ²⁰ ‘»As they gather silver and copper and iron and lead and tin into the furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath and I will lay you there and melt (liquefy) you. ²¹ ‘»I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my wrath. You will be melted in the midst of it. ²² ‘»As silver is melted in the furnace, you will be melted in the midst of her. You will know that I, Jehovah, have poured out my wrath on you.«’

¹⁸ »The nations were angry. Your wrath (indignation) has come! It is time to judge the dead, to reward your servants the prophets, the holy ones, and those who reverence your name the small and the great. Time to destroy (exterminate) (eradicate) those who destroy the earth.«

² »True and righteous are his judgments: for he has judged the great harlot, who corrupted the earth with her fornication. And has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.«
