⁵ »The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.

⁹ »The enemy said: ‘I will pursue them! I will catch them! I will divide the loot! I will take all I want! I will use my sword! I will take all they have!’« ¹⁰ »Your breath blew the sea over them. They sank like lead in the raging water.

²¹ The Philistines captured him and put his eyes out. They took him to Gaza, chained him with copper chains. They put him to work grinding at the mill in the prison. ²² His hair grew back. ²³ The Philistine kings met together to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon. They rejoiced and said: »Our god gave us victory over our enemy Samson!« ²⁴ They praised their god and said: »Call Samson, and make him entertain us!« They brought Samson out of the prison and they made him entertain them. ²⁵ They forced him to stand between the columns. When the people saw him, they sang praise to their god: »Our god gave us victory over our enemy, who devastated our land and killed so many of us!« ²⁶ Samson said to the boy who led him by the hand: »Let me touch the columns that hold up the building. I want to lean on them.« ²⁷ The building was crowded with men and women. All five Philistine kings were there. There were about three thousand men and women on the roof, watching Samson entertain them. ²⁸ Samson prayed: »Sovereign Lord Jehovah please remember me. Please, God, give me my strength just this one time. With this one blow I can get even with the Philistines for putting out my two eyes.« ²⁹ Then Samson took hold of the two middle columns holding up the building. He put one hand on each column. He pushed against them. ³⁰ Samson shouted: »Let me die with the Philistines!« He pushed with all his might, and the building fell down on the five kings and everyone else. Samson killed more people at his death than he had killed during his life.

¹¹ He gave them an account of the glories of his wealth. The number of children he had. He recalled the ways in which he had been honored by the king. How the king put him over the captains and servants of the king. ¹² Haman continued: »Truly, Esther the queen let no man but myself come in to the feast she made ready for the king. Tomorrow again I am to be her guest with the king.

¹⁰ So Haman was put to death by hanging him on the pillar he made for Mordecai. Then the king's rage subsided.

³ »I have seen a stubborn fool take root and I quickly cursed his house.

¹² »While still growing and uncut, they wither more quickly than grass. ¹³ »Such is the destiny of all who forget God. The hope of the godless will perish.

¹⁹ »Its life withers away and other plants grow from the soil.

²⁹ »He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. ³⁰ »He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away. ³¹ »Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless. He will get nothing in return. ³² »Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. ³³ »He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. ³⁴ »The company of the godless will be barren. And fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.

⁵ »The lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. The flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ »The light in his tent becomes dark. The lamp beside him will be put out.

⁸ »What hope doe the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

¹³ »Here is the fate God accords the wicked. This is the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: ¹⁴ »No mater how many his children, their fate is the sword. His offspring will never have enough to eat. ¹⁵ »The plague will bury those who survive him. Their widows will not weep for them. ¹⁶ »Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, ¹⁷ what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. ¹⁸ »The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. ¹⁹ »He lies down wealthy and wakes up and all is gone. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night. ²¹ »The east wind carries him off. He is gone and it sweeps him out of his place. ²² »It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. ²³ »Men will clap their hands in derision (ridicule) and hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen a wicked, violent man spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil. ³⁶ Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more. I searched for him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You threw them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they destroyed, suddenly! They are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ It is like waking up from a dream, O Jehovah. When you awake you will despise everything they represent.

²¹ »Not everyone who calls me Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. He who does the will of my Father in heaven will enter.

²⁰ »Anyone sown among the rocky places hears the word and immediately with joy receives it. ²¹ »There is no root in him. He endures for a while. When he has tribulation or persecution because of the word, he falls away.

²² The people shouted: »It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.« ²³ Immediately the angel of God killed him, because he did not give God the glory. He was eaten by worms and died.

⁴ Each of you must examine your own actions. Then you can be proud of your own accomplishments without comparing yourself to others.

¹⁶ You glory in your conceit. Such glory is evil.
