²⁰ »If a slave owner takes a stick and beats his slave, whether male or female, and the slave dies on the spot, the owner is to be punished. ²¹ »If the slave lives a few days after the beating, you are not to be punished. After all, you have already lost the services of that slave who was your property.

Now I am going to free you,’ declares Jehovah. ‘I will free you to die in wars, plagues, and famines. I will make all the kingdoms of the world horrified at the thought of you.

⁹ You masters, do the same things to them. Do not threaten! You know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven. There is no favoritism with him.

¹ Masters, give your servants that which is just and equal. You know that you also have a Master in heaven.
