¹⁷ »I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens. Every creature that has the breath of life in it, everything on earth will perish.

¹⁷ The flood came upon the earth for forty days. As the waters increased, they lifted the ark high above the earth. ¹⁸ The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth. The ark floated on the surface of the water. ¹⁹ They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. ²⁰ The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. ²¹ Every living thing that moved on the earth perished: birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. ²² Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. ²³ Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out. Men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. ²⁴ The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

²⁴ Jehovah made burning sulfur and fire rain out of the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah.

²³ Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky. Then Jehovah sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. Jehovah rained hail on the land of Egypt. ²⁴ It hailed, and lightning flashed while it hailed. This was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. ²⁵ All over Egypt the hail knocked down everything that was out in the open. It struck down people, animals, and every plant in the fields and destroyed every tree in the fields.

² »Remember the forty years Jehovah your God led you in the wilderness. He did this in order to humble you and test you. He wanted to know what was in your heart. Whether you would obey his commandments.

¹⁵ »He was the one who led you through that vast and dangerous wilderness. It was a parched, arid land, with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He was the one who made water come out of solid rock for you.

¹¹ As they fled from Israel, and were going down to Beth-horon, Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them all the way to Azekah and they died. In fact hailstones killed more than the children of Israel killed using their swords.

¹⁰ While Samuel was offering the burnt sacrifice, the Philistines moved forward to attack. Just then Jehovah thundered from heaven against them. They became completely confused and fled in panic.

¹⁰ »The adversaries of Jehovah will be broken to pieces. He thunders in the heavens against them. Jehovah will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to His king and exalt the horn (power) of His anointed.«

¹⁸ Samuel prayed. That same day Jehovah sent thunder and rain. Then all the people became afraid of Jehovah and of Samuel.

¹³ »He causes it to happen for correction, for his land and for his loving kindness.

²² »Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail? ²³ »These I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle.

²⁶ »Who waters a land where no man lives, a desert with no one in it? ²⁷ Who satisfies a desolate wasteland to make it sprout with grass?

⁹ You visit the earth and cause it to overflow. You greatly enrich it! The stream of God is full of water. You prepare their grain and thus you prepare the earth. ¹⁰ You water its furrows abundantly; you settle its ridges and soften it with showers. You bless its growth. ¹¹ You have crowned the year with your bounty. Your paths drip with fatness. ¹² The pastures of the wilderness drip, and the hills surround themselves with rejoicing. ¹³ The meadows are clothed with flocks and the valleys are covered with grain. They shout for joy, yes, they sing.

¹³ You water the mountains from your upper chambers. The earth is satisfied with the fruit of your works. ¹⁴ You cause the grass to grow for the cattle and vegetation for the labor of man. That he may bring forth food from the earth, ¹⁵ And wine which makes man's heart glad. That he may make his face shine with oil, and food, which sustains man's heart.

²⁷ All of them wait for you to give them their food at the proper time. ²⁸ You give it to them, and they gather it up. You open your hand, and they are satisfied with many blessings.

²⁵ He gives food to all flesh, for his loving kindness is everlasting.

¹⁷ »He has not left himself without witness. For he did good and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.«
