² He said: »I called to Jehovah because of my affliction. And he answered me! Out of the belly of the grave I cried and you heard my voice.

⁷ Jacob was frightened and worried. He divided the people who were with him into two groups. He also divided his sheep, goats, cattle, and camels. ⁸ He thought: »If Esau comes and attacks the first group, the other may be able to escape.« ⁹ Then Jacob prayed: »O God of my father Abraham, the God of my father Isaac, O Jehovah, you said to me: ‘Go back to your country and your family and I will be good to you.’ ¹⁰ »I am less than nothing in comparison with all your love and your faithfulness to me your servant. I only had a stick in my hand when I traveled across Jordan. Now I have become two armies. ¹¹ »Save me from the hand of Esau, my brother. I fear that he will attack me and kill both mothers and children. ¹² »You said, ‘I will make sure that you are prosperous and that your descendants will be as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. No one will be able to count them because there are so many.’«

²⁴ Then Jacob was by himself. A man was fighting with him till dawn. ²⁵ The man saw that he was not able to overcome Jacob. He gave him a blow in the hollow part of his thigh, so that his leg was damaged. ²⁶ He said to him: »Let me go now, for the dawn is near.« But Jacob said: »I will not let you go till you have given me your blessing.« ²⁷ Then he asked: »What is your name?« And he said, »Jacob.« ²⁸ The man said: »Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel (He Struggles With God), because you have struggled with God and with men and you have won.«

¹⁶ »Do not consider your maidservant a worthless woman. I pray like this because I am miserable and filled with grief.«

⁶ The people in their bitterness said David should be stoned. This caused him great distress. They were thinking of their sons and daughters. But David found strength in Jehovah his God.

¹ ([Psalm of David]) Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my trouble. Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

¹⁰ You do not abandon me to the grave or allow your holy one to decay.

⁴ The cords of death surrounded me. The torrents of wickedness frightened me. ⁵ The cords of the grave surrounded me. The snares of death confronted me. ⁶ I called on Jehovah in my distress. I cried to my God for help. He heard my voice from his temple, and my cry for help reached his ears.

⁶ The poor man called out. Jehovah heard him and saved him from all his troubles.

²⁴ Jehovah has not despised or been disgusted with the plight of the oppressed one. He has not hidden his face from that person. Jehovah heard when that oppressed person cried out to him for help.

² In despair and far from home I call to you! Take me to the rock that is my safe refuge,

² All men will come to you O Hearer of prayer.

¹³ Your loving kindness toward me is great. You have rescued me from the depths of the grave.

¹ ([Sons of Korah]) O Jehovah, God of my salvation I cry out to you day and night. ² Let my prayer come before your presence. Turn your ear to hear my cries. ³ I am filled with troubles, and my life comes closer to the grave. ⁴ I am numbered with those who go into the pit. I am like a man without any strength. ⁵ I am abandoned with the dead, like those who have been killed and lie in graves. I am like those whom you no longer remember, who are cut off from your hand (power) (care). ⁶ You have put me in the bottom of the pit, in deep dark places. ⁷ Your rage lies heavily on me. You afflict me with all your waves.

¹ When I was in trouble, I cried out to Jehovah, and he answered me.

³ The ropes of death became tangled around me. The fear of the grave took hold of me. I experienced pain and agony.

¹ ([David’s Prayer]) I cry loudly to Jehovah. Loudly, I plead with Jehovah for mercy. ² I pour out my complaints in his presence and tell him my troubles. ³ When I begin to lose hope, you already know what I am experiencing. My enemies have hidden a trap for me on the path where I walk.

⁹ »The grave below wakes up to meet you when you come. It wakes up those who are dead, all who were leaders on earth. It raises all who were kings of the nations from their thrones.

⁴⁰ »Just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so the Son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth [the grave].
