¹² »If you are disloyal and join with the nations that are still left among you and intermarry with them, ¹³ »Jehovah your God will no longer drive these nations out as you advance. Rather, they will be as dangerous for you as a trap or a pit and as painful as a whip on your back or thorns in your eyes. ²² I would not make request to the king for a band of armed men and horsemen to give us help against those who might attack us on the way. We said to the king: »The hand (power) (protection) of our God is on his servants for good, but his power and his wrath are against all those who have turned away from him.«

²⁸ Rebels and sinners will be crushed at the same time. Those who abandon Jehovah will come to an end.

¹⁰ But they rebelled and grieved (offended and hurt) his Holy Spirit. So he turned against them as their enemy. He fought against them.

¹³ You will put to shame all that forsake you, O Jehovah, the hope of Israel. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, for they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living water.

²⁴ ‘»But suppose a righteous person turns away from doing right and he does evil things. He does all the disgusting things that the wicked person did. Will he live? All the right things that he has done will not be remembered because of his unfaithfulness and because of his sin. He will die because of them.

⁴² »God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven. It is written in the book of the prophets: O you house of Israel, have you offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

²⁶ If we continue to (practice) (deliberately persist in) sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins. ²⁷ But there remains a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fiery indignation, which will devour God’s enemies.

³⁸ »My righteous people will live by faith. If any of them turn back, I will not be pleased with them.«
