³ »‘I took Abraham, your ancestor, from the land across the Euphrates and led him through the whole land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

¹ Jehovah said to Abram: »Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. ² »I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing. ³ »I will bless those who bless you. I will curse whoever curses you. All the people on earth will be blessed through you.« ⁴ So Abram left, just as Jehovah told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

⁵ He brought him outside and said: »Look toward heaven and count the stars. Are you able to count them?« He continued: »So shall your descendants be.«

² Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age. It was at the very time God had promised him. ³ Abraham gave the name Isaac (he laughs) to the son Sarah bore him.

⁷ »You are Jehovah, the true God, who took Abram and made him yours, guiding him from Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham; ⁸ »You saw that his heart was true to you, and made an agreement with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite and the Girgashite, even to give it to his seed, and you have done what you said; for righteousness is yours.

³ Children are an inheritance from Jehovah. They are a blessing from him.

² He said: »Men, brothers and fathers, listen; The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran. ³ »He said to him: ‘Get out of your country and away from your relatives. Go to the land that I will show you.
