³⁵ He sat down and the twelve came to him. He said: »If any man has the desire to be first, he would be last of all and servant of all.«

¹⁰ Pride brings contention, but wisdom is with the well advised.

⁵ »Are you looking for great things for yourself? Do not look for them.« »I am going to bring disaster on all people!« Declares Jehovah, »But wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.«

¹¹ »The greatest among you will be your servant.

²⁵ Jesus called them to himself and said: »You know that the rulers of the nations exercise absolute dominion over them. They lord it over them and behave like tyrants. ²⁶ »But it will not be so among you. He who will be great among you must be your servant. ²⁷ And he who will be first among you will be your attendant (servant) (minister). ²⁸ »The Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom in payment for many.«

⁴² Jesus called them together and said: »You know that those who rule over the nations lord it over them. Their great ones exercise authority over them. ⁴³ »It is not so among you. Whoever would become great among you, shall be your minister (servant) (attendant). ⁴⁴ »Whoever would be first among you, shall be servant of all. ⁴⁵ »For the Son of man also came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.«

¹⁴ »I tell you the tax collector and not the Pharisee was right with God when he went home. He who exalts himself will be humbled! He who humbles himself will be exalted!«

¹⁰ »When you are invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, friend, move to a more honorable place. And the other guests will see how you are honored. ¹¹ »Those who exalt themselves will be humbled. And people who humble themselves will be exalted.«

²⁶ »But you should not be this way. He who is the greater among you let him become as the younger. He that is chief among you is he who serves.

⁶ But he gives more grace. The scripture said, »God resists the proud, but gives grace (loving-kindness) to the humble.«
