¹ Jehovah said to Moses: ² »Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them. Get one from the leader of each of their tribes. Write each man’s name on his staff. ³ »Write Aaron’s name on the staff for Levi because there must be one staff for the head of each tribe. ⁴ »Put them in the tent of meeting where I meet with you, in front of the testimony of my promise. ⁵ »The staff from the man I choose will begin to grow. In this way I will silence the frequent complaints the Israelites make against you and Aaron.« ⁶ Thus Moses spoke to the Israelites. Their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one from the leader of each of their tribes. Aaron’s staff was among them. ⁷ Moses put the staffs in Jehovah’s presence in the tent of the testimony. ⁸ The next day Moses went into the tent. He found that Aaron’s staff for the tribe of Levi had not only begun to grow, but it had also blossomed and produced ripe almonds. ⁹ Moses brought out the staffs from Jehovah’s presence and showed them to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his staff. ¹⁰ Jehovah said to Moses: »Put Aaron’s staff in front of the testimony. Keep it there as a sign to warn any other rebels. Then you will stop their complaints about me, and they will not die.« ¹¹ Moses did exactly what Jehovah commanded him to do. ¹² The Israelites said to Moses: Now we are going to die! We will perish! We are all lost! ¹³ Anyone who comes near Jehovah’s tent will die! Are we all going to die?

¹⁰ »The royal scepter shall not depart from Judah. His descendants will always rule. Nations will bring him tribute and bow in obedience before him. This, until Shiloh comes and all will obey him.

² Jehovah asked him: »What is that in your hand?« He answered: »A shepherd’s staff.«

The leader for the people of Issachar is Nethanel, son of Zuar. ⁶ »The total number of men in his army is fifty-four thousand four hundred. ⁷ »Then will be the tribe of Zebulun. Elishama, son of Ammihud is the leader for the people of Ephraim. ¹⁹ »The total number of men in his army is forty thousand five hundred. ²⁰ »Next to them will be the tribe of Manasseh. The clans of Gershon and Merari carried it. ¹⁸ Next, the banner of the division led by the tribe of Reuben would start out, company by company. Elizur son of Shedeur was in command. ¹⁹ Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was in command of the tribe of Simeon, ²⁰ and Eliasaph son of Deuel was in command of the tribe of Gad. ²¹ The Levite clan of Kohath started the march. They carried the sacred objects. By the time they arrived at the next camp, the tent had been set up again. ²² Next, the banner of the division led by the tribe of Ephraim would start out, company by company, with Elishama son of Ammihud in command. ²³ Gamaliel son of Pedahzur commanded the tribe of Manasseh. ²⁴ Abidan son of Gideoni commanded the tribe of Benjamin. ²⁵ Finally, the banner of the division led by the tribe of Dan, serving as the rear guard of all the divisions, started out, company by company. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was in command. ²⁶ Pagiel son of Ochran commanded the tribe of Asher. ²⁷ Ahira son of Enan commanded the tribe of Naphtali.

² Jehovah will extend your powerful scepter from Zion. He will say: »Rule in the midst of your enemies.«

³ For the rod of the wicked shall not rest on the lot of the righteous in case the righteous put forth their hands to iniquity.

¹⁴ ‘»Fire spread from one of its main branches and consumed its fruit. No strong branch is left on it fit for a ruler’s scepter. This is a song of grief and is to be used as a song of grief.’«

¹⁰ ‘»‘It is sharpened to make a slaughter and polished to flash like lightning! Shall we rejoice in the rod of my son despising every tree?’«’«

¹³ ‘»For there is testing. And what if even the rod that despises will be no more?« Declares the Lord Jehovah.

¹⁶ »Son of man, take a stick and write on it: For Judah and for the Israelites who are associated with it.’ Then take another stick and write on it: ‘The stick of Ephraim, for Joseph and for all the people of Israel associated with it.’ ¹⁷ Then join both sticks together so that they will be one in your hand. Your people will say to you: ¹⁸ ‘Tell us what you mean by this.’ ¹⁹ Then say to them: ‘This is what the Lord Jehovah says: I will take Joseph's stick, which is in Ephraim's hand, and the tribes of Israel associated with it, and I will put them with Judah's stick. I will make them into one stick. They will be one in my hand.«’ ²⁰ When you hold the sticks in your hand, let the people see them.

¹⁴ Shepherd your people, the flock of your heritage, with your staff. They dwell alone in the forest in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

¹⁶ These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon and Kohath and Merari. Levi lived one hundred and thirty-seven years.

²⁰ Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed, and she bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived one hundred and thirty-seven years.

² The names of Aaron’s sons are Nadab (firstborn), Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.

¹ Jehovah said to Aaron: »You, your sons, and your family will be responsible for any sins against the holy place. You and your sons will also be responsible for any sins you commit when you work as priests.

⁷ »Only you and your sons may do the work of priests, everything done at the altar and under the canopy. This is my gift to you: You may serve me as priests. Anyone else who comes near the holy place to do this work must die.«

¹⁶ »I will give you the Ten Commandments written on two flat tablets. Put them inside the chest. ¹⁷ »Cover the lid of the chest (mercy seat) with pure gold. ¹⁸ »Hammer out two winged cherubs of pure gold and fasten them to the lid at the ends of the chest. ¹⁹ »Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end. ⁶ »Place the altar in front of the canopy that hangs over the ark containing the words of my covenant I will meet with you there in front of the throne of mercy that is on the ark.

³⁶ »Grind some of it into a fine powder. Put it in front of the ark containing the words of my covenant in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. You must treat it as most holy.

⁷ Moses put the staffs in Jehovah’s presence in the tent of the testimony.

⁵ Then he said to Korah and all his followers: »In the morning Jehovah will show who belongs to him, who is holy. He will have that person come near him. Only the person Jehovah chooses will be allowed to come near him.

¹¹ »You and all your followers have joined forces against Jehovah! Who is Aaron that you should complain about him?«

⁸ The next day Moses went into the tent. He found that Aaron’s staff for the tribe of Levi had not only begun to grow, but it had also blossomed and produced ripe almonds.

¹⁰ Jehovah said to Moses: »Put Aaron’s staff in front of the testimony. Keep it there as a sign to warn any other rebels. Then you will stop their complaints about me, and they will not die.«

²⁴ You will go up in flames like straw and hay! You have rejected the law of the holy God Jehovah the All-Powerful Holy One of Israel. Now your roots will rot, and your blossoms will turn to dust.

¹ There must go forth a twig out of the stump of Jesse. A branch (sprout) (shoot) (descendant) from his roots will bear fruit.

¹¹ »I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will also end the arrogance of the proud. I will demean (disgrace) the arrogance of tyranny.

⁶ In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill the entire world with fruit.

¹ The desert will rejoice, and flowers will bloom in the wastelands. ² The desert will sing and shout for joy! It will be beautiful like the Lebanon Mountains. It will be fertile as the fields of Carmel and Sharon. Everyone will see Jehovah’s splendor. They will see his greatness and power.

⁴¹ »They will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. Then I will stop you from playing the harlot. You will also no longer pay your lovers.

²⁷ ‘»I will make your lewdness and your fornication brought from the land of Egypt to cease from you, so that you will not lift up your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.’

⁵ »I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily and he will take root like the cedars of Lebanon.

²¹ This is the inventory of the tent, the Tent of Testimony. An inventory was ordered by Moses and carried out by the Levites under the direction of Ithamar, son of the priest Aaron.

³ (The Shulamite) »Just like the apple tree among the trees of the wood so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.«

² In that day the Branch of Jehovah will be beautiful and glorious. And the fruit of the earth will be the delight (pride) (joy) and the adornment of the survivors of Israel.

²⁴ ‘»Every tree in the forest will know that I, Jehovah, can bring down tall trees and help short ones grow. I dry up green trees and make dry ones green. I, Jehovah, have spoken, and I will keep my word.«’«

¹² ‘»It was uprooted in fury and thrown to the ground. The east wind made it shrivel. It was stripped of its fruit. Its strong branches withered and fire consumed them.

¹ »I am the true vine, and my Father is the cultivator. ² »He takes away the branches in me that do not bear fruit. He cleans every branch that bears fruit. That way it may bear more fruit. ³ »You are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. ⁴ »Remain with me, and I with you. The branch cannot bear fruit by itself. It must remain on the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain with me. ⁵ »I am the vine and you are the branches. He that remains with me, and I with him, the same bears much fruit. You can do nothing apart from me. ⁶ »If a man does not remain with me, he is removed as a branch, and withers. They gather them and throw them into the fire where they are burned (destroyed) (consumed).

⁴ It had a golden incense burner. The Ark of the Covenant was completely covered with gold. It contained the golden pot that had the manna, and the rod of Aaron that had sprouted, and the tables of the covenant.

³² Moses said: »This is what Jehovah has commanded: ‘Let two quarts of it be kept throughout your generations. Then they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’«

³⁸ »The incense burners of these men who sinned and lost their lives are holy, because they were offered to Jehovah. Hammer them into thin metal sheets to cover the altar. This will be a sign to the Israelites.«

⁴⁰ He followed Jehovah’s command given through Moses. The copper-covered altar will remind Israel that no one but a descendant of Aaron may come near to burn incense to Jehovah. Everyone else will die like Korah and his followers.

²⁴ »You have rebelled against Jehovah from the day I knew you.

¹⁹ »Write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel. Put it on their lips, so that this song may be a witness for me against the sons of Israel. ²⁰ »When I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and are satisfied and become prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn me and break my covenant. ²¹ »Then it will happen, when many evils and troubles have come upon them, that this song will testify before them as a witness. It shall not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. I know the intent they are developing today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore.« ²² So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel. ²³ Jehovah gave this command to Joshua, son of Nun: »Be strong and courageous, because you will bring the Israelites into the land that I swore to give them, and I will be with you.« ²⁴ Moses finished writing all the words of this Law in a book. ²⁵ He gave this command to the Levites who carried the Ark of Jehovah’s Covenant: ²⁶ »Take this Book of the Law, and put it next to the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah your God, where it will be a witness against you.

¹² The sons of Eli were corrupt. They did not know Jehovah.

²² Then every wicked and worthless man who had gone with David said: »Since they did not go with us, they should not be given any of the loot we recovered. Each of them should take only his wife and children and leave.«

⁴ I am among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows. Their tongue is a sharp sword.

² Listen, heaven, and pay attention, earth! Jehovah (YHWH) has spoken: »I raised my children and helped them grow, but they have rebelled against me.

⁹ Jehovah says: »The people of Israel have not stopped sinning against me since the time of their sin at Gibeah. So at Gibeah war will catch up with them.

² You once walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power (authority and jurisdiction) of the air, the spirit that is now active in the sons of disobedience. ³ We all once lived in the lust of our flesh, indulging the desires (lusts) of the flesh and of the mind. We were by nature children of anger and violent passion, like everyone else.

⁶ Let no one deceive you with empty words. It is because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

¹¹ The descendants of Korah did not die.

⁷ Your anger consumes us. We are troubled by your rage.

³ Man ruins his life by his own foolishness. His heart chafes with anger against Jehovah.

⁵ »Woe to me!« I cried. »I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips (a sinner) and I live among a people of unclean (filthy) lips (speech) (language). My eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of Hosts.«

¹⁶ For I will not contend (rebuke) forever! Nor will I always be angry! The spirit would fail before me, and those whom I have made.

⁵ You have forgotten the exhortation that reasons with you as to sons: »My son, do not despise (regard lightly) discipline from Jehovah and do not lose heart when he corrects you. (Proverbs 3:11, 12)

³ ‘»However, God did say: ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not touch it, or you will die.’«

⁵¹ »When the tent is to be moved, the Levites will take it down. When we camp, they will set it up. Anyone else who comes near the tent will be put to death. ⁵² »The other Israelites will camp with each family in its own area under its own flag. ⁵³ »The Levites will camp all around the tent of God’s words. In this way Jehovah will not be angry with the congregation of Israel. So the Levites will be in charge of the tent of God’s words.«

²⁶ He said to the congregation: »Move away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you’ll be swept away because of all their sins.«

⁴ »They are to work with you and fulfill their responsibilities for all the service in the tent. No unqualified person may work with you. ⁵ »You and your sons alone must fulfill the responsibilities for the Holy Place and the altar. That way my anger will not again break out against the people of Israel. ⁶ »I chose the other Levites from among the Israelites to help you. They are a gift given to Jehovah to do the necessary work at the tent of meeting. ⁷ »Only you and your sons may do the work of priests, everything done at the altar and under the canopy. This is my gift to you: You may serve me as priests. Anyone else who comes near the holy place to do this work must die.«

¹³ »Jehovah’s anger blazed against the Israelites. Therefore he made them wander in the desert for forty years until the whole generation of those who had done evil in Jehovah’s presence was gone.

¹⁶ »When the last of these soldiers died,

¹⁹ Some of the men of Bethshemesh looked inside the Ark. Jehovah killed seventy of them. This made the people of Bethshemesh very sad. ²⁰ They said: »No other God is like Jehovah! Who can go near him and still live? We must send the chest away from here. But where can we send it?« ²¹ They sent messengers to tell the people of Kiriath-Jearim: »The Philistines have returned the Ark of Jehovah. Will you take it and keep it there with you?«

⁶ As they came to the threshing place of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out and took hold of the Ark of the Covenant. ⁷ At once Jehovah God became angry with Uzzah. He killed him because of his irreverence. Uzzah died there beside the Ark of the Covenant. ⁸ Because of that the place has been called Perez Uzzah (breakthrough of Uzzah) ever since. David was furious because Jehovah punished Uzzah in anger. ⁹ Then David was afraid of Jehovah and said: »How can I take the Ark of the Covenant with me now?« ¹⁰ So he decided not to take it with him to Jerusalem. Instead, he turned off the road and took it to the house of Obed Edom, a native of the city of Gath. ¹¹ The Ark of Jehovah stayed at the home of Obed Edom from Gath for three months. Jehovah blessed Obed Edom and his whole family. ¹² King David was told: »Jehovah has blessed Obed Edom’s home and everything he owns because of the Ark of God.« Then David joyfully went to get the Ark of God from Obed Edom’s house and bring it to the City of David.

¹¹ David was angry because Jehovah’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah. To this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. (Outbreak against Uzzah) ¹² David was afraid of God that day and asked: »How can I ever bring the Ark of God to me?« ¹³ He did not take the Ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.

¹³ »Because you Levites were not there the first time, Jehovah our God struck us. We had not dedicated our lives to serving him in the way he designated.«

¹⁴ »If He should determine to do so, If He should gather to himself his spirit and his breath, ¹⁵ »All flesh would perish and man would return to dust.

³ If You, Jehovah, should record our sins, O Jehovah, who could stand? ⁴ But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be reverenced.

²² Do not be scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong. For I have heard from the Sovereign Lord Jehovah of Hosts that destruction is determined (decreed) upon the whole earth.

⁵ Hearing these words Ananias fell down and died. Great fear came over all those who heard these things.

¹¹ Great fear came upon the entire congregation who heard these things. ¹² The apostles performed many wonders among the people. They were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. ¹³ None of the rest dared to associate with them, but the people held them in high esteem. ¹⁴ More believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.

¹³ You were once far off but now with Christ Jesus, the blood of Christ has brought you near.

¹⁹ Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ by a new and living way, which he consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh, ²¹ having a high priest over the house of God, ²² let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
