⁵ He sent messengers to summon Balaam, son of Beor, who was at Pethor, on the Euphrates River, in the land where his people lived. Balak’s message was: »A nation has just come here from Egypt. They have spread out all over the countryside and are setting up their camp here in front of me.

¹⁶ »I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust, your offspring could be counted.

⁷ The children of Israel had many children. They became so numerous and strong that the land was filled with them. ⁸ A new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt. ⁹ He said to his people: »There are too many Israelites! They are stronger than we are. ¹⁰ »We must outsmart them or they will increase in number. If war breaks out they will leave the country and join our enemies to fight against us.«

⁷ Balaam delivered this message: »Balak brought me from Aram. The king of Moab summoned me from the eastern mountains. Come and curse Jacob for me,« he said. ‘Come and condemn Israel.

⁴ »This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt. It is because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.

²² Balaam was also the son of Beor, the soothsayer. The children of Israel slayed him along with all who were slain with the sword.

⁹ »‘The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, fought against you. He sent word to Balaam son of Beor and asked him to put a curse on you.

¹ On that day there was a reading from the book of Moses while the people listened. They heard that it said in the book that no Ammonite or Moabite might ever come into the meeting of God at any time. ² This is because they did not give the children of Israel bread and water when they came to them, but got Balaam to put a curse on them. Our God turned the curse into a blessing.

²⁴ Jehovah made his people grow rapidly in number and stronger than their enemies.

⁵ »O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him. Remember from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of Jehovah.«

¹⁵ They went astray, forsaking the right way. They followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of wrongdoing. ¹⁶ He was rebuked for his own transgression. A beast of burden spoke with a man's voice and restrained (hindered) the madness of the prophet.

¹¹ Woe to them! They went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the rebellious talk of Korah.

¹⁴ »'I have a few things against you: you have people there who hold to the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to present a snare to the sons of Israel, to eat of idol sacrifices and commit fornication.
