¹³ A talebearer reveals secrets. He that is of a faithful spirit conceals the matter.

¹⁷ The leaders of Judah exchanged letters with Tobiah. ¹⁸ For in Judah there were a number of people who had made an agreement by oath with him. For he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, the son of Arah and his son Jehohanan had taken as his wife the daughter of Meshullam, the son of Berechiah. ¹⁹ They spoke a good deal about the good he had done in my presence, and reported what I said to him. Tobiah sent letters with the purpose of causing me fear.

¹⁹ A gossip reveals secrets. So avoid a man who speaks flattering words.

⁹ Debate your cause with your neighbor direct; and do not reveal the secret of another.

²⁰ Without wood the fire goes out. Without a talebearer strife ceases. ²¹ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle disputes. ²² The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts.

²⁷ Then all the officials came and questioned me. I told them exactly what the king had told me to say. There was nothing else they could do, because no one had overheard the conversation.

¹³ They also learn to be idle, going about from house to house; and not only idle, but gossipers and busybodies, speaking things that they should not.
