1 Better a poor man who walks with integrity than a fool whose lips are perverse.
2 It is not good to be a person without knowledge. He who hurries often misses the way.
3 Man ruins his life by his own foolishness. His heart chafes with anger against Jehovah.
4 Wealth makes many friends but poverty drives them away.
5 A false witness will not go unpunished. The liar will not escape.
6 Many ask favors of the prince. Every man is a friend of a person who gives gifts.
7 The brothers of the poor hate him. His friends leave him. He pursues them with words but they do not listen!
8 He who acquires wisdom loves life. He who guards understanding finds good.
9 A false witness will not go unpunished and the liar will perish.
10 Delight is not the custom of a fool much less for a servant to rule over princes.
11 The discretion of a man defers anger. It is his glory to overlook a transgression.
12 The king's anger is like the roaring of a lion but his favor is like dew upon the grass.
13 A foolish son is a disgrace to his father. A contentious wife is like drips from a leaky roof.
14 Real estate and riches are the inheritance of fathers. A prudent (wise) (sensible) wife is from Jehovah.
15 Laziness propels one into a deep sleep. An idle person will suffer hunger.
16 He who obeys the commandment saves his life. But he who is careless of his ways will die.
17 When you help the poor (needy) (lowly) (depressed) you lend to Jehovah. He will pay you back.
18 Correct your son while there is hope. Do not contribute to his death.
19 A man of great anger will suffer punishment. Rescue him once and then do it again.
20 Listen to counsel and accept instruction (discipline), that you may be wise in the future.
21 Many intentions are in men’s hearts. Only counsel from Jehovah will stand.
22 Kindness is desired in a man. A poor man is better than a liar.
23 Respect for Jehovah leads to life. He who has it will be satisfied. He will not be visited by evil.
24 A lazy man hides his hand in the dish and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
25 Strike a scoffer and the simple will be wary. Reprove someone who has understanding, and he will discern knowledge.
26 He who assaults his father and chases away his mother is a shameful and disgraceful son.
27 Stop listening to instruction (discipline) (correction), my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 An ungodly witness scorns judgment. The mouth of the wicked devours evil.
29 Penalties are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the back of fools.

8 While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Jehovah asked Cain: »Where is your brother Abel?« »I do not know,« he replied. »Am I my brother’s keeper?«

Numbers 16:19-41
19 Korah assembled all his followers who opposed Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The glory of Jehovah appeared to the entire group.
20 Jehovah said to Moses and Aaron:
21 »Move away from these men. I will destroy them instantly.«
22 Immediately, they bowed with their faces touching the ground and said: »O God, you are the God who gives the breath of life to everyone! If one man sins, will you be angry with the entire congregation?«
23 Then Jehovah said to Moses:
24 »Tell the congregation: ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.’«
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 He said to the congregation: »Move away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you’ll be swept away because of all their sins.«
27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out and were standing at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children.
28 Moses said: »This is how you will know that Jehovah sent me to do all these things and that it wasn’t my idea:
29 »If these men die a natural death like all other people Jehovah has not sent me.
30 »But if Jehovah does something totally new, if the ground opens up, swallows them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive to their graves; then you will know that these men have treated Jehovah with contempt.«
31 When he finished speaking, the ground under them split,
32 and the earth opened up to swallow them, their families, the followers of Korah, and all their property.
33 They went down alive to their graves with everything that belonged to them. The ground covered them. They disappeared from the assembly.
34 All the Israelites around them ran away when they heard their screams. They thought the ground would swallow them, also.
35 Fire came from Jehovah and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering incense.
36 Then Jehovah said to Moses:
37 »Tell Eleazar, son of the priest Aaron, to take the incense burners out of the fire and scatter the coals and incense somewhere else. This is because the incense burners have become holy.
38 »The incense burners of these men who sinned and lost their lives are holy, because they were offered to Jehovah. Hammer them into thin metal sheets to cover the altar. This will be a sign to the Israelites.«
39 The priest Eleazar took the copper incense burners that had been brought by those who had been burned to death. The incense burners were then hammered into thin metal sheets to cover the altar.
40 He followed Jehovah’s command given through Moses. The copper-covered altar will remind Israel that no one but a descendant of Aaron may come near to burn incense to Jehovah. Everyone else will die like Korah and his followers.

16 The king said: »Ahimelech, you and your entire family are going to die.«
17 The king said to the guards who were attending him: »Turn around and kill the priests of Jehovah! They are also with David. They knew that he was fleeing and did not reveal it to me. But the servants of the king were not willing to lift a hand to attack the priests of Jehovah.«
18 The king said to Doeg: »You turn around and attack the priests.« Doeg the Edomite turned around and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.

3 Amnon had a friend named Jonadab. He was the son of David’s brother Shimeah. Jonadab usually knew how to get what he wanted.
4 Jonadab said to Amnon: »You are the king’s son. Even so day after day I see you looking sad. What is the problem?« Amnon answered: »I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my half brother Absalom.«
5 Jonadab said: »Pretend that you are sick and go to bed. When your father comes to see you, say to him: ‘Please ask my sister Tamar to come and feed me. I want her to fix the food here where I can see her. Then she can serve it to me.’«
6 So Amnon went to bed and pretended that he was sick. King David went to see him. Amnon said: »Please have Tamar come and make a few cakes here where I can see her. Then she can serve them to me.«
7 David sent word to Tamar at the palace: »Go to Amnon’s house and fix him some food.«
8 She went there and found him in bed. She prepared dough and made some cakes there where he could see her. Then she baked the cakes.
9 Tamar emptied them out of the pan for him to eat. But he refused to eat. He said: Send everyone away. So they all left.
10 He said to her: »Bring the cakes here to my bed and serve them to me.« She took the cakes and went over to him.
11 She offered them to him. He grabbed her and said: »Come to bed with me!«
12 She said: »No! Do not force me to do this disgraceful thing. It is evil.
13 »How could I ever hold up my head in public again? And you, you would be completely disgraced in Israel. Please speak to the king. I am sure he will give me to you.«
14 Amnon wouldn’t listen to her. He grabbed his sister and raped her.
15 After that Amnon developed an intense hatred for her. His hatred for her was greater than the lust he felt for her. »Get out of here,« he told her.
16 She said: »No, You do a greater wrong by sending me away than the other thing you did to me!« He would not listen to her.
