¹ When Israel left Egypt, when Jacob's family left people who spoke a foreign language, ² Judah became his holy place and Israel became his government. ³ The Red Sea looked at this and ran away. The Jordan River turned back. ⁴ The mountains jumped like rams. The hills jumped like lambs. ⁵ Red Sea, why did you run away? Jordan River, what made you turn back? ⁶ Mountains, what made you jump like rams? Hills, what made you jump like lambs? ⁷ Earth, tremble and shake in the presence of Jehovah, in the presence of the God of Jacob. ⁸ He turns a rock into a pool filled with water and turns flint into a spring flowing with water.

⁷ »I will make you my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am Jehovah your God. I brought you out from under the forced labor of the Egyptians.

⁴¹ After exactly four hundred and thirty years all of Jehovah’s people left Egypt in organized family groups. ⁴² It is a night to be observed for Jehovah for having brought them out from the land of Egypt. This night is for Jehovah and should be observed by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.

³ Moses said to the people: »Remember this day in the month of Abib. It is the day Jehovah’s mighty power rescued you from slavery in Egypt. Do not eat anything made with yeast.

²¹ Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. Jehovah swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land. The waters were divided.

⁸ »With a blast from your nostrils, the water piled up. The waves stood up like a dam. The deep water thickened in the middle of the sea.

¹⁷ »You will bring them and plant them on your own mountain, the place where you live, O Jehovah, the holy place that you built with your own hands, O Jehovah.

⁶ »Behold! I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it. Then the people may drink.« Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

⁵ ‘If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine. ⁶ ‘You will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation. These are the words you must speak to the children of Israel.’«

¹⁸ Mount Sinai was all in smoke because Jehovah descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace. The whole mountain quaked violently!

² »I am Jehovah your God, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.

¹⁸ The people heard the thunder and the trumpet blast. They saw the lightning and the smoking mountain. They trembled with fear and stood at a distance.

⁸ »Have them make a holy place (sanctuary) for me, and I will live among them.

⁴⁵ »I will dwell among the sons of Israel and will be their God. ⁴⁶ »They shall know that I am Jehovah their God who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them. I am Jehovah their God!

¹¹ Moses raised his hand and hit the rock twice with the staff. Water came pouring out! All the people and their animals drank.

¹⁵ »He was the one who led you through that vast and dangerous wilderness. It was a parched, arid land, with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He was the one who made water come out of solid rock for you.

¹ »Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover to Jehovah your God. It was in the month of Abib that Jehovah your God brought you out of Egypt by night.

⁸ »‘Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror and with signs and wonders.

⁹ Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel. They said: »Be silent and listen, O Israel! This day you have become a people for Jehovah your God.

¹² »When you cross the Jordan, these will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

¹⁴ »Jehovah your God walks in the middle of your camp. He is there to deliver you and to defeat your enemies before you. Therefore your camp must be holy. He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you.

⁴ »Jehovah, when you left the mountains of Seir, when you came out of Edom, the earth shook, and rain fell from the sky. Yes, water poured out of the clouds. ⁵ »The mountains shook before Jehovah of Sinai, before Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹⁵ »They received bread from heaven when they were in need, and you made water come out of the rock for their drink, and gave them orders to go in and take for their heritage the land that your hand give them.

⁶ »He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.

¹¹ »The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astounded at his rebuke.

⁷ Then the earth shook and quaked. Even the foundations of the mountains trembled. They shook violently because he was angry.

¹⁶ Why do you look with envy (desire) (greed), you mountains with many peaks, at the mountain where God has chosen to live? Certainly, Jehovah will live there forever.

¹⁸ The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind. The lightning lit up the world. The earth trembled and shook.

¹⁵ He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. ¹⁶ He brought forth streams also from the rock and caused waters to run down like rivers.

⁶⁸ but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion he loved. ⁶⁹ He built his holy place to be like the high heavens, like the earth that he made to last for a long time.

⁹ Worship Jehovah in the beauty of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.

⁵ He established it for a testimony in Joseph (Israel) when he went throughout the land of Egypt. I heard a language that I did not understand. He said:

⁴ His lightning lights up the world. The earth sees and trembles. ⁵ The mountains melted like wax at the presence of Jehovah, at the presence of Jehovah of the whole earth.

⁷ They fled at your rebuke. At the sound of your thunder they hurried away.

³² He looks at the earth, and it trembles. He touches the mountains, and they smoke.

⁴¹ He opened a rock, and water flowed like a river through the dry places.

⁹ So he rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, and he led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness.

³⁵ He changes deserts into lakes (marshland) and dry ground into springs.

⁴ The mountains jumped like rams. The hills jumped like lambs.

¹⁶ There will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant of his people who will be left. This will be as it was for Israel when they came up out of the land of Egypt.

²³ I see the earth. It is without form and empty. I see the sky. Its lights are gone. ²⁴ I see the mountains. They tremble and the hills sway.

²² »Do you not reverence (respect) me?« Asks Jehovah. »Do you not tremble [with awe] in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, a permanent barrier it cannot cross. Although the waves toss continuously, they cannot break through. Although they roar, they cannot cross it.

¹² Where is the one who sent his powerful arm to support the right hand of Moses? Where is the one who divided the water in front of them to make an everlasting name for himself?

¹ O that you would split open the heavens and come down! The mountains would quake at your presence. ² Be like the fire that kindles brushwood and makes water boil. Come down to make your name known to your enemies. The nations may tremble in your presence. ³ When you did awe-inspiring things that we did not expect, you came down and the mountains quaked at your presence.

⁶ »You cry out: Sword of Jehovah, how long will you keep on fighting? Go back into your sheath. Stay there and rest! ⁷ »How can the sword of Jehovah rest? Jehovah has ordered it to attack Ashkelon and the coast. He has assigned it to be there.« (Ezekiel 21:3, 30) (Revelation 19:15, 16)

²⁶ »‘»I will promise them peace. This will be a long lasting promise. I will establish them and make them increase in number. I will put my holy place among them for a very long time. ²⁷ »‘»My dwelling place will be with them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. ²⁸ »‘»Then the nations will know that I, Jehovah, have set Israel apart as holy, because my holy place will be among them permanently.«’«

³ »For, behold, Jehovah comes out of his place! He comes down and treads upon the high places of the earth. ⁴ »The mountains melt under him. The valleys split like wax before the fire! Like waters poured down a steep place.

¹ Listen to what Jehovah said: Arise, plead your case before the mountains. Let the hills hear your voice. ² Hear Jehovah’s indictment you mountains and you enduring foundations of the earth! Jehovah argues a case against his people. He will contend with Israel:

⁵ The mountains quake because of him, and the hills melt. The earth trembles (shakes) (heaves) at his presence, yes, the world, and all that dwells in it.

⁶ He stood and measured the earth. He looked and agitated the nations. The everlasting mountains were shattered! The ancient hills collapsed. His ways are eternal!

⁸ Was Jehovah displeased with the rivers? Was your anger against the rivers? Or is your fury against the sea? You rode upon the horses and your chariots are salvation.

God said: I will dwell in them, and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people. ⁴ They all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them. That Rock was (represented) (symbolic of) Christ! (Exodus 7:6) (Numbers 20:11)

⁷ According to the same word, the heavens that now are, and the earth, are reserved for fire, being kept for the Day of Judgment and destruction of ungodly men. ⁸ Do not forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (Psalm 90:1, 4) ⁹ Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness. He is longsuffering (patient) toward you. He does not wish that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. ¹⁰ The day of Jehovah will come as a thief. The heavens will pass away with a great noise. The elements shall be dissolved with intense heat. And the earth and the works in it will be burned up (destroyed). (Joel 2:31) (Zephaniah 1:14) ¹¹ Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved (destroyed), what manner of persons should you be in all holy living and godliness?

¹¹ I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it. From before him the earth and heaven fled away. There was found no place for them.

³ Then I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying: »Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men. He will dwell with them and they will be his people! God will be with them, and be their God.
