²⁵ But I tell you in truth, that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land;

¹⁵ Am I not free to do what I will with my own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

²⁶ The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast out the demon from her daughter. ²⁷ And he said to her, Let the children be filled first; for it is not well to take the childrens bread and throw it to the little dogs. ²⁸ But she answered, and saith to him, Yea, Lord; even the little dogs under the table eat of the childrens crumbs. ²⁹ And he said to her, For this saying go thy way; the demon hath gone out of thy daughter.

²¹ In that hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that, though thou didst hide these things from the wise and discerning, thou didst reveal them to babes. Yea, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. And turning to the disciples he said,

¹⁵ For he saith to Moses, "On whom I have mercy, on him will I have mercy; and on whom I have compassion, on him will I have compassion."

²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that makest answer to God? Shall the thing that is wrought say to the workman, Why hast thou made me thus?

⁹ having made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in himself

¹¹ in whom we also obtained the inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will,

¹⁷ Elijah was a man of like nature with us, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth for three years and six months;
