Matthew 23 Cross References - RKJNT

1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 3 Therefore, all they bid you to observe, that observe and do; but do not imitate their works: for they say, but do not do. 4 For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them upon men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 8 But do not be called Rabbi: for one is your Teacher; and all of you are brethren. 9 And call no man upon the earth your father: for one is your Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and he who shall humble himself shall be exalted. 13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you do not go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 [Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: therefore you shall receive the greater condemnation.] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cross sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. 16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 You blind fools: which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is obligated. 19 You blind fools: which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore, whoever shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things on it. 21 And whoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells in it. 22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faithfulness: these you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but within are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous, 30 And say, If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of those who killed the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the sins of your fathers. 33 You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell? 34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them you shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: 35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berachiah, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation. 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets, and stone those who are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not let me! 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I say to you, You shall not see me again, until you shall say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Matthew 15:10-20

10 And he called the multitude, and said to them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man. 12 Then his disciples came, and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. 15 Then Peter answered and said to him, Explain to us this parable. 16 And Jesus said, Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not yet understand, that whatever enters in at the mouth goes into the belly, and is eliminated? 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immorality, thefts, false witness, slanders: 20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

Matthew 15:2-9

2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. 3 But he answered and said to them, Why do you transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honour your father and mother: and, He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death. 5 But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever of mine might benefit you is a gift to God; 6 Then he is free not to honour his father or his mother. Thus have you made the commandment of God void by your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people honours me with their lips; but their hearts are far from me. 9 But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Matthew 6:1-16

1 Take heed that you do not practice your righteousness before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have praise from men. Truly I say to you, They have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing: 4 That your alms may be in secret: and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you. 5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have received their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you. 7 But when you pray, do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore, do not be like them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. 9 Therefore, pray in this manner: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover, when you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, They have received their reward.

You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow: 23 Why then did you not put my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest? 24 And he said to those who stood by, Take from him the mina, and give it to him who has ten minas. 25 And they said to him, Lord, he already has ten minas. 26 I say to you, To everyone who has shall more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 27 As for my enemies, those who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and kill them in front of me. 28 And when he had spoken these things, he went on ahead, ascending to Jerusalem. 29 And it came to pass, when he had come near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples, 30 Saying, Go into the village opposite you; and as you enter it you shall find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat: untie it, and bring it here. 31 And if anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say, Because the Lord has need of it. 32 And those who were sent went their way, and found it as he had said. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord has need of it. 35 And they brought it to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they put Jesus on it. 36 And as he went, they spread their clothes on the road. 37 And as he was coming near, at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38 Saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39 And some of the Pharisees in the multitude said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. 40 And he answered and said to them, I tell you that if they should hold their peace, the very stones would cry out. 41 And when he had come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42 Saying, If you, even you, had only known on this day, the things which make for peace! but now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days shall come upon you, when your enemies shall build an embankment about you, and surround you, and keep you in on every side, 44 And shall level you to the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you did not know the time of your visitation.

Luke 20:11-14

11 He sent another servant: and they beat him also, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent a third: and they wounded him, and cast him out. 13 Then the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will respect him when they see him. 14 But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

2 Corinthians 3:14-18

14 But their minds were hardened: for to this day the same veil remains unlifted at the reading of the old covenant; because it is only removed through Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their hearts. 16 But whenever a man shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled faces beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into that same image, from glory to glory, and this is from the Lord, the Spirit.
