¹¹ and the Pharisees came forth, and began to dispute with him, seeking from him a sign from the heaven, tempting him;

³⁸ Then answered certain of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, 'Teacher, we will to see a sign from you.'

¹ And the Pharisees and Sadducees having come, tempting, did question him, to show to them a sign from the heaven, ² and he answering said to them, 'Evening having come, you say, Fair weather, for the heaven is red, ³ and at morning, Foul weather to-day, for the heaven is red -- gloomy; hypocrites, the face of the heavens indeed you do know to discern, but the signs of the times you are not able! ⁴ 'A generation evil and adulterous does seek a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet;' and having left them he went away. ⁵ And his disciples having come to the other side, forgot to take loaves, ⁶ and Jesus said to them, 'Beware, and take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees;' ⁷ and they were reasoning in themselves, saying, 'Because we took no loaves.' ⁸ And Jesus having known, said to them, 'Why reason you in yourselves, you of little faith, because you took no loaves? ⁹ Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many hand-baskets you took up? ¹⁰ Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? ¹¹ How do you not understand that I did not speak to you of bread -- to take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?' ¹² Then they understood that he did not say to take heed of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching, of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

³ And the Pharisees came near to him, tempting him, and saying to him, 'Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?'

²³ And he having come to the temple, there came to him when teaching the chief priests and the elders of the people, saying, 'By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?'

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words,

¹⁸ And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, 'Why me do you tempt, hypocrites?

²³ In that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

³⁴ And the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him; ³⁵ and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,

¹⁶ And the scribes and the Pharisees, having seen him eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners, said to his disciples, 'Why -- that with the tax-gatherers and sinners he does eat and drink?'

¹ And gathered together unto him are the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, having come from Jerusalem, ² and having seen certain of his disciples with defiled hands -- that is, unwashed -- eating bread, they found fault;

¹⁵ And he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, 'Why me do you tempt? bring me a denary, that I may see;'

²⁵ And lo, a certain lawyer stood up, trying him, and saying, 'Teacher, what having done, life age-during shall I inherit?'

¹⁶ and others, tempting, a sign out of heaven from him were asking.

⁵³ And in his speaking these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began fearfully to urge and to press him to speak about many things, ⁵⁴ laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁵⁴ And he said also to the multitudes, 'When you may see the cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, A shower does come, and it is so; ⁵⁵ and when -- a south wind blowing, you say, that there will be heat, and it is; ⁵⁶ hypocrites! the face of the earth and of the heaven you have known to make proof of, but this time -- how do you not make proof of it? ⁵⁷ 'And why, also, of yourselves, judge ye not what is righteous?

⁴⁸ Jesus then said unto him, 'If signs and wonders you may not see, you will not believe.'

³⁰ They said therefore to him, 'What sign, then, do you, that we may see and may believe you? what do you work?

⁴⁸ did any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees?

⁹ And Peter said unto her, 'How was it agreed by you, to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? lo, the feet of those who did bury your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you forth;'

²² Since also Jews ask a sign, and Greeks seek wisdom, ²³ also we -- we preach Christ crucified, to Jews, indeed, a stumbling-block, and to Greeks foolishness,

⁹ neither may we tempt the Christ, as also certain of them did tempt, and by the serpents did perish;
